The Development of Online Communities and Gaming
Arcade culture in the 1970s and 1980s, where players congregated to compete and mingle, is where gaming's history begins. With local multiplayer video games like Street Fighter II and couch co-op on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), this social element persisted into the 1990s. In games like World of Warcraft and Counter-Strike, players can now connect globally thanks to the introduction of online multiplayer in the 2000s (Newman, 2017).
As a result of this change, gaming evolved into a virtual community where users could create online friendships, guilds, and clans. These days, gaming encompasses more than just playing; it also involves observing, engaging, and taking part in a wider network of shared experiences (Jenkins, 2006).

The Effects of Gaming Platforms on Society
Three main platforms influence the gaming landscape:
Consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch): Designed with social multiplayer and exclusive content in mind.
PC gaming (Steam, Epic Games Store): Provides powerful gaming with modding features that let users change the graphics and gameplay.

srry i didn't get to promote myself as live earlier last night. plan was to do ps games but my ps network was down last night. there was outages in the us apparently cuz on downdetector it kept showing that there were outages. like i could've still played on it but 1. i won't get achievements and 2. i couldn't play online with ppl. so we had to do pc games while we waited for it to hopefully fix itself and it sadly didn't after the pc games so we had to do Xbox but i couldn't promote my live as midgame. i mean i guess i could've done it when i went to get lunch,but i was already 3-4 hrs in at that point,i just didn't see the point.
plan is to go live on pc with fiance on wednesday or friday if it fixes itself by then. we shall see if the problem still persists or not. so going to have to keep an eye on the downdetctor and/or the ps itself and hope for the best.
in meantime if plan stays the same either tomorrow,and/or tuesday will do a gamecube stream. i usually don't promote myself when i solo stream,so i guess keep an eye out. lol.

Xbox Live Goes Down in Nearly Seven-Hour Outage
UPDATE, 7/2, 9:01 p.m. ET: Microsoft said it resolved the technical problems that had knocked out Xbox Live for nearly seven hours. “Users should no longer be encountering issues signing in to Xbox Live and services,” the Xbox Support account on X posted at 8:49 p.m. ET. “Thank you for your patience, game on!”

Xbox Live, Microsoft’s multiplayer gaming and digital media network, was suffering a major outage Tuesday as thousands of users reported problems accessing it.
User-reported problems with Xbox Live began to spike at about 2:15 p.m. ET Tuesday, according to monitoring site Downdetector. As of 2:25 p.m., more than 23,000 outage reports had been logged with the site, with more than three-fourths indicating they were having issues logging in. Some Xbox Live users reported seeing error message saying the service was undergoing “scheduled maintenance.”

Following the rough launch of Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, which is an HD port combo of the original Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront II on modern consoles and PC, developer Aspyr Media says it’s working to address issues and increase network stability. 
Shortly after the game’s launch on March 14, players across all platforms (but especially PC), experienced server issues preventing them from getting into matches as well as other connectivity issues like disconnects, rubberbanding, and more once actually in a match. The result was a wave of disappointment from players excited to play these classic multiplayer games. Now, a day later, Aspyr has acknowledged the issues and is working to fix them.

“We’d like to thank the Battlefront community for their overwhelming support and feedback for the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection release,” an update from the studio reads. “At launch, we experienced critical errors with our networking infrastructure. The result was incredibly high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and servers not appearing in the browser. 
“Since launch, we’ve been working to address these issues and increase network stability, and we will continue our efforts until our network infrastructure is stabilized to prevent further outages.”
Aspyr encourages player to report bugs, errors, or unexpected behaviours to its support team via this request form.

We learned last month that Aspyr Media was developing Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, a remastered port combo of Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront II, first released in 2004 and 2005 respectively. This collection is now live but it seems the game is having a rough start at launch, especially for PC players. 
The viral tweet below posted to X (formerly Twitter) early this morning is indicative of many of the problems PC players are experiencing with the game: 
-10,000 people playing on launch night. -Only has 3 servers that have 64 slots for a total of ~200 players. -Multiplayer doesn’t work otherwise. -Price Tag of 35 USD

Replies to that tweet highlight some of the other issues players are apparently running into: zero options to party up with friends and a lack of expected quality-of-life improvements (@damnitbobbywhy), rubberbanding (@SoCalZork), and more. However, some players are saying the biggest issues, like a low amount of servers and an inability to actually get into matches, were fixed within two hours of launch. 
Over on the Star Wars Battlefront subreddit, dozens of users are posting memes about the game’s launch, discussions about connectivity issues, and more. One user posted a screenshot of them downloading the original Star Wars Battlefront games on Xbox (through backward compatibility) to play instead of this collection, while another says this re-release is “hands down the word video game I have ever paid money for.” It’s clear players on that subreddit are not happy with Aspyr’s Battlefront collection. 
On Steam, the game, which has a price tag of $35.01, has a “mostly negative” rating after 1,407 reviews – 21 percent of the reviews for the game are positive.

Now, players absolutely have the right to be upset about a $35 game they paid for and are seemingly unable to play at launch, which is doubly unfortunate when it’s clear a lot of these players were excited to jump in right at launch. But, there’s a good chance Aspyr is already working on fixes for the collection and ideally, a week from now, nobody is running into the issues Day One players are experiencing. That’s still not fair to Day One players but if you’re a fan of online games like this, you know rough launches aren’t all that unusual, as unfortunate as they can be.

The Covid-19 epidemic has drastically altered our lifestyles, particularly our free time. People have had to get creative in staying occupied at home in the face of lockdowns and other social isolation tactics. Sales of video games have skyrocketed in this climate, demonstrating the widespread appeal of this new leisure. But has the Covid-19 epidemic also affected the general opinion of gaming? In this article, we'll go into this subject and examine how gaming has grown in popularity despite the downturn.
Gaming as a social activity:

During the pandemic, gaming has become increasingly important as a means of connecting people together. Online gaming has become a popular option for those who are unable to get together in person to spend time with their friends and family. Statista found that between February and April 2020, when the global COVID-19 pandemic first broke out, an increase in user involvement and spending on gaming occurred (Clement, 2022).  As more individuals explore for secure methods to socialize online, platforms like Steam, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network have seen a surge in their daily active user bases. The rise in popularity of multiplayer games like Fortnite and Call of Duty has led to the rise in popularity of communal gaming experiences like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In addition, research has demonstrated that online games can assist in fostering social ties and address fundamental mental health needs as people, confined to houses during the COVID-19 epidemic, engage in multiplayer games to maintain a feeling of community (CBC Radio, 2020).

According to a report by the World Health Organization (2021), online games encourage players to stay mentally and physically healthy at home. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many of us to make changes to our daily routines and spend more time at home. Lockdowns have made it difficult to get our daily dose of exercise and social contact. But staying active and connected to our loved ones is more important than ever, especially for our physical and mental health (World Health Organization, 2021). In addition, research has shown that puzzle games like Tetris and strategy games like Civilization have been shown to have a calming effect on the brain, making them a popular choice for those looking for a mental break (World Health Organization, n.d.). In particular, Tetris has been found to reduce symptoms of PTSD and depression in patients (McPhillips 2022). Similarly, Minecraft has been found to improve creativity, problem-solving skills, and socialization in children.

Finally, the pandemic has also brought a newfound respect for gaming as a legitimate career choice. Many people have lost their jobs or been furloughed during the pandemic, leading them to look for alternative sources of income. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the popularity of esports as a legitimate career choice. With many people losing their jobs or being furloughed during the pandemic, esports has become a viable career option for many (Heinrich 2020). In fact, the effect of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the esports industry was significant, as people sought alternative forms of entertainment due to travel restrictions and cancelations of live entertainment events (Heinrich 2020). Esports are video game competitions played online either alone or as a team, so they are not as constrained by public safety measures as live sports. As people were unable to tune in normally to sporting events, esports engagement boomed during the health crisis (Heinrich 2020). Esports events have continued to take place online even during the pandemic, with many professional gamers earning a living from their passion. In addition, content creation and streaming have become increasingly popular as a way for gamers to make a living from their passion. Platforms like Twitch and YouTube have made it easier than ever for gamers to share their gameplay and connect with fans (Allen 2020). In fact, the number of people watching gaming content on Twitch increased by 50% during the pandemic (Hall 2020). In addition, content creation and streaming have become increasingly popular as a way for gamers to make a living from their passion.

In conclusion, people's views on video games have shifted after the spread of the Covid-19 virus. As people seek out new ways to socialize, enhance their mental health, and diversify their income, gaming has emerged as a viable option. The pandemic has proven that gaming is enjoyable and fulfilling for everyone, from novices to veterans.

This is becoming an extensive problem in the AAA game industry. Just off the top of my head, I can list a number of broken-at-launch, updated-to-success stories. No Man's Sky, Destiny 1, Cyberpunk 2077, and Halo Infinite are all right there at the forefront of "released in trash condition" and then updated over several years to have the same quality standard that games 10 years old launched with. Halo Infinite specifically is a very recent example, launched in winter of 2021 with a really great skeleton of a game, but the single player was empty and the multiplayer was so broken people barely stuck around. After a massive paradigm shift in upper management, 343i's been pushing out content and it's only now becoming marketable as a complete game with full content. They've only just started overhauling the network and desync issues and they've already started hiring for a new Halo game.
There are so many reasons this has become standard practice in the industry, and I hate every single one of them.
The most obvious one, I think, is that with the progress of technology and expectations, games are just taking longer and requiring more resources to make. Upper management expects the same timeframe that older games took and put too much pressure on the devs to rush the game in an unready state.
That obviously leads to a multitude of development problems, but a really big one is the fact that devs can't spend time optimizing the game code. That's why games are so massive these days. Non-optimized code leads to larger game files and longer loading times, inhibiting player experience.
I also understand that some of the game studios hiring and employing processes are pretty scummy. During the development of Halo Infinite, Microsoft used contracted devs on ~1 year long contracts that they wouldn't renew. They would just replace them with new contracted devs who were excited to put "worked on Halo" on their resume. So what you got was a working team of devs who are completely unfamiliar with the code written thus far, and had to continue writing code for a game that they could only work on for a year or so. Halo Infinite was in development for 6 years.
And finally, one of the killers of the industry is the Live Service game model. The shift from "product" to "service" is a massive market shift that we're seeing in every industry of the world, not just games. We see it in housing (rent instead of own), we see it in media (Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, etc), we see it in music (Apple Music and Spotify, instead of iTunes), and we see it in so many other industries. We even see it in lesser forms, owning digital copies of movies and games instead of physical copies. When you buy a digital copy of a thing? You're not purchasing the thing, you're purchasing the license to consume the thing. And the owner of the thing can usually revoke your right to use the thing at any time, depending on how the terms of use are written. Digital copies are one-time rents for the thing. Premium subscriptions are active rents for using the product service. All because companies can make more money, and it's damaging the customers experience and the industry as a whole.
As pertains to games specifically, a lot of the studios are turning to live service models for their games. Oh you can download the game for free, but if you want full access to all content, you have to buy the dlc, buy the battlepass, level the battlepass before it times out, and even pay for PS+ or XBox Live Gold if you're on console. And even then there's still a plethora of microtransactions and predatory FOMO events that inhibit player experience. This live-game service means devs don't have to have everything ready for launch. The content comes after the gameplay. So they build the skeleton of a game so that the players can get a taste of what they're "not" paying for, and then work on cranking out one-time-use content as the seasons progress.
All of this builds up to a very terrible game experience. Incomplete games built on scummy management practices and predatory monetizations that have free passes to fix the game up after release, all at the expense of the developers and the consumers. And don't get me started on pre-order culture and loot boxes.
Rant over, I'm out.
i don't care if Cyberpunk 2077 was patched and made good. I genuinely think it's shameful that a video game could come out that broken and win an award years later. it's like if Morbius won an Oscar because the DVD release was good.

Dev kits can’t play retail games at all.
Dev kits have much bigger system specs because we have to be able to run debug builds. Debug builds are much less optimized because of all the debug information that’s kept in memory.
Dev kit software can do a lot of things like simulate online and/or disc latency, handle remote network connections, record game screenshots/video and controller inputs, and profile resource usage.
Current gen dev kits require you to provide Sony/Microsoft with a whitelisted IP address. They won’t work if you aren’t connecting to the dev network without a recognized IP address. This has caused a lot of problems due to everyone working from home. Before the PS4 gen, this wasn’t the case - we could take our dev kits home if we wanted (and the company let us).

There’s the beefy (and expensive) dev kit, and then there’s the less beefy (and cheaper) test kit. Dev kits have more features and better hardware.
There’s a separate developer’s version of PSN and Xbox Live networks. This is so we can do things like test network stuff, locale, achievements, etc. without them going live
Most of the time, the company is very careful about dev kits because they cost a lot. I’ve had dev kits chained to my desk before.
When we had family events at the office like Halloween trick-or-treating, we had to cover up all of our (still under NDA) dev kits so children and family members could not see them.
The Xbone’s Developer Mode Activation does not actually turn your Xbone into a dev kit. It still has the retail hardware specs and it doesn’t have all of the features or access to the special dev network.
Last gen dev kits are a lot cheaper than the newest ones. You can probably get a PS4 or Xbone dev kit for under $2000 now.

Behavior Theory Frameworks/Conditioning and What the fuck does Master Chief talk about in therapy?
Ramblings below - like a lot, like I spent too much time writing this and you should not read this
Behavioral Theory could work well as a framework with rehabilitating Spartan IIs if the case worker focused on Operant Conditioning Theory and Cognitive Social Learning Theory, which I talked about in this ask because I think I’m funny and this blog is an archive of me applying human behavior theories to video games.
Spartans have always been taught the mission comes first! Always! The 2s are indoctrinated from age 6-14 and then have that reinforced the rest of their lives. From the beginning they are taught to push themselves to the limits, earn their food by winning, form bonds with teammates but be ready to sacrifice them for the mission. The whole lives wasted vs spent conversation between John and Mendez after the augmentation surgery!
What the UNSC/ONI wants comes before their lives, the lives of other soldiers, civilians, AI etc. This constant conditioning of expectations and rewards has created the norms cemented in their minds. This becomes standard operating procedure.
Spartans are also an entirely separated social group, other people have made really great posts on how they are Othered and have their own way of communicating with body language. ODSTs hate Spartans, marines see them as cyborgs or saviors, and while they’re allies, Spartans are not seen or treated as human, by literally everyone. They are a means to an end, with the original goal being to maintain the UNSC’s position of power and crush the insurrectionists in the outer colonies, but uh oh Aliens!
Maybe the 2s aren’t as expendable as the 3s but the mindset and reinforcement of “mission first, people second” being repeated their entire lives is going to stick. So is the constant mistreatment and abuse from their fellow soldiers and handlers. 
Addressing the cognitive distortions that come from their upbringing while also balancing the fact that Spartans are so fundamentally different from the way they developed to survive would be so much work, especially considering how much information on them is given to their therapist.  The main distortion I would apply is minimization, making large problems small and not properly dealing with them, and specifically for John, personification, accepting blame for negative events without sufficient evidence. 
Like these are grown ass super soldiers who can kill you in less than a second and calculate the amount of gravity in a room on the fly but then also can flounder when trying to comfort civilians or make small talk because their experiences and values are so alien to adults who had more developmentally “normal” lives. 
Literally applying therapy to Spartans would be like, what was done to you was wrong, the ends do not justify the means, you were children and the adults in your life failed to protect you. You are a human person who is fallible and did the best you could with what you had. And the Spartan would say, “sounds fake but okay, can I pass my psych eval and go back to war now please?”
Jumping back to Behavior Theory
Different approaches to therapy under the Behavior Theory umbrella help modify negative behaviors with treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical behavior therapy that teach individuals adaptive coping like emotional regulation, distress tolerance, cognitive distortions, and interpersonal communication. And that’s just one framework under the umbrella of human behavior theories.
Social work therapy is different from psych as it approaches individuals with heavily researched, evidence-based theories and frameworks in a holistic viewing of person-in-environment, instead of a strong focus on internal psychology. 
Social work looks at all the interacting systems, environment, history, and internal and external factors affecting an individual. One of the most useful frameworks is the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Frameworks (BPSS) when helping a client. It helps with identifying all the intersecting factors, both risk and protective, that shapes a client’s lived experiences. The most important thing to remember is that the individual is an expert in their own life, they know their experiences best.
The hardest part is applying this to Spartans because they Are So Fucked, their lived experiences, their environments and systems and institutions interacting with them, and the amount of their personal information that is probably so classified.
BPSS is a tool to help social workers assess individuals and their situations by collecting info that is related to the presenting issues and current and past circumstances. Info like medical history, hospitalizations, substance abuse, mental illness, personal relationships, family history and background, culture and norms, education, legal history, spirituality and participation etc. is all under this framework. 
For Spartan 2s most of this info is lost or classified and helping someone who has repressed every negative emotion they've had for the sake of the mission would be so much to unpack but that’s also why you’re reading the mad ramblings over an over caffeinated nerd on the internet.
Life Course Theory which looks at developmental milestones and the individual’s experiences versus the socially expected markers, how do you apply that to children who were taken and have lived such different lives? 
While early adolescence is when “normal” development of thoughts of self and identity take place alongside the physical changes of puberty, Spartans were being turned into emotionless calculating weapons. Sorry John, no forming a sense of identity and peer bonds for you, go kill that Watts guy who betrayed us and joined the insurrectionists. 
And now that I’ve gone this insane and opened 2 whole textbooks up, let’s get to Master Chief thoughts. If you’ve read this far thank you, I swear I’m normal, 2020 has just been a weird year. 
Why the fuck did I think I could write a therapy fic on a guy with 20 minutes of actual dialogue across almost 2 decades of games?
I make fun of him and call him a himbo, but he’s smart, he knows he’s being used and there is resentment there that’s been building for years. 
There’s also decades of trauma and combat experience, physical, and emotional abuse, the lack of a support network,  lack of an identity, the biological factors and aftermath of the augmentations and injuries he’s received, a whole lot of grief and self-inflicted guilt. 
The loss of a third of his peer group with the augmentation surgery, Sam’s death, the loss of Reach (the only place he’s considered home), Keyes, the Pillar of Autumn crew, Miranda Keyes, Johnson, Cortana. He cares about the marines who fight with him!!!

He just stands there and takes it and rarely snaps, and even then it’s just small cracks on the surface with fissures running deep. The few details I will pull from Halo 5 are Blue Team’s reactions to John pushing himself so hard from the beginning of the game, and the literal crack in his armor from the fight with Locke. Like dude.  
John’s a leader and will get the mission done but he tugs on the leash. He’s earned enough of a reputation and uses it to get his way.
Halo 2’s “Permission to leave the station” with Mr. “I’m going to hand deliver a bomb to the fusion reactor of a covenant supercarrier and hope my friends catch me”. 
Halo 4 is when we see him say no to a superior officer and then 5 is him going AWOL. Palmer literally points out that no one is going to stop him.
Halo 5 kills me for many reasons but John bringing up Halsey and what she did to him and also pointing out that he knows Halo 5 Cortana is trying to manipulate him with psychological tactics hurts. 
He knows what’s been done to him!
I cannot remember which book it was but John isn’t used to working alone. He literally takes fire because he was expecting someone to have his back! 
He’s lost without Cortana! She was in his brain! Y’all! I played Halo Combat Evolved on the original xbox when I was like 8 and I knew these two were meant to be together. From the moment they met they had great chemistry and relied on each other! Cortana literally goes after people who have it out for John! John wants her approval and shows off for her in one of the books. 
I’ve already written too much here but like all of the games have John showing off for Cortana, making dry jokes, jumping out of things he shouldn’t.

The whole point of this rambling is to try and get my thoughts about how to approach John’s character under control.
And that’s the thing. He’s lost control. He’s lost people, he’s losing his position and being phased out as an aging spartan, a relic. John’s used to following orders and making some decisions on the battlefield but it was always short term.
He has no identity beyond being a weapon. Complete the mission, clear the LZ, get put in cryo. Rinse, repeat. 
The timeline of the games are what I'm most familiar with but with the comics and books too it’s one long run from Halo 2 to Halo 4. Cairo station to the Dreadnought to the crash landing to Forward Unto Dawn to Requiem to “The Didact is Dead but not really but we’ll deal with him off-screen”.
I know Hood apparently gave John R&R orders before Halo 5 that he ignored and kept running himself into the ground. This is a man who has to keep moving and keep being useful. 
I imagine him giving in and seeking help as a last resort to fix any problems he has with performing his duties rather than helping himself be healthier. 
Any professional he sees is going to have to approach him like they’re approaching a self sacrificing feral cat, with lunch meat and quiet. This man needs to have his support network closer, set up long term goals, and do some serious, and most likely incredibly painful, self reflection on where he’s come from and where he wants to go. Get him out of that tin can and into therapy. I don’t have a nice neat ending because this was a ramble and also therapy is not neat and tidy. Thanks for reading my words about mr halo

My last day and a half was spent dealing with failing hardware and attempts to prop up my system better to avert outright PC death. Guess I’m gonna have to look at upgrading to a new machine very soon, but it’s a bit annoying since new AMD chips and NVIDIA cards are all due shortly as well. The latter, well, I can keep my 1070 Ti and just change that later, if I can’t wait..
Oh and the whole “Microsoft bought Zenimax / Bethesda” thing happened! I have a few thoughts on that, as you might imagine!
First off, it’s the absolute best possible result, believe it or not. Microsoft has been on good terms with both Bethesda and Nintendo for years now, and it’s really just Sony’s spoiled attitude about cross-platform to blame for the failures of that on their system. So when you consider this, MS owning all these franchises is a positive for the vast majority of players and won’t change anything on their availability. The Xbox Game Pass will actually become an even better value, and since it IS cross-platform, it helps consumers too.
Think about the other corporations with billions to throw around, like Apple, Amazon and Google. None of them are game companies, and all of them (especially Apple) have horrendous policies and love exclusivity deals, which hurts everyone else. Actual game devs like Activision, EA, Epic, Ubisoft would all have been terrible too. Lootboxes, exclusive clients and rootkits galore!
It probably won’t happen for at least a year or two, but I’d expect Bethesda’s own network to be folded into Xbox’s, so that’s another benefit and one less thing for us to worry about having to install or get hacked. After Bethesda’s recent mistakes and outright fuck ups, I think that, while any reader here knows I ain’t exactly a fan of megacorps, this is pretty much the best situation for virtually everyone involved. Sony might lose out, long term, but seeing how many sales Fallout and Elder Scrolls games have gotten on the Playstation platforms, I don’t see them vanishing from their catalogs. If Sony gets the stick out of their ass, then even that won’t be an issue either! I can personally confirm that there are indeed talks (nothing concrete yet though) to get the Xbox Game Pass service on the Switch, as MS has no problem selling games on competitor systems. Only Sony hates it, and when you’re even more old-fashioned than Nintendo, that doesn’t bode well.
This is a surprisingly ideal outcome. What the hell, is 2020 over or something? We’re not allowed to have good news this year..

However, it's the Switch's portability that makes it the most eye-catching hypothetical of the bunch, particularly if we take Sony at its word and assume they aren't building a new piece of handheld hardware.
The Switch already has a formidable library of games, but who wouldn't mind taking God of War or Marvel's Spider-Man on a long plane flight. Hell, even if those games wouldn't work on, there are dozens of hours of fun to be had rediscovering past-gen titles like the Suikoden series, or Persona 3 and 4.
While this might sound like a pie-in-the-sky fantasy, it's not totally outside the realm of possibility. Xbox Live is accessible via Switch, Android and iOS. While there's no Xbox Games Pass functionality for Switch, it's been a long-rumored possibility. Perhaps we could see Sony roll out a subscription-based service for past-gen games, which would also be playable on mobile devices and even competitor consoles. It wouldn't be the first time the two rivals teamed up on a big project: the original PlayStation grew out of a collaboration to make a CD-ROM drive for the Super Nintendo in the late 90s.

Then again, Sony's carved out a reputation for itself as being a holdout when it comes to cross-play functionality with competitor platforms. It's also no secret that Nintendo's had a barnstorming 2019, with sales of the Switch already outpacing the Xbox One. The long-rumored Switch Pro seems to have been put on the back burner to allow Nintendo to keep riding its current high; perhaps the company wouldn't feel the need to team up with its biggest competitor.
Then again, it would enable Sony and Nintendo to ward off competition from Microsoft and Google Stadia, so it's not totally outside the realm of possibility. Given the fact-finding nature of this survey, we're likely a long way off from hearing anything definitive about this hypothetical venture.

A con season without cons -- and how to survive it
Some thoughts on convention cancellation, Coronavirus, coping mechanisms, creative flow, and a few things that don’t start with the letter C
If you haven’t heard the news, Anime Central officially canceled yesterday. I am disappointed, as ACEN is the only time I get to see certain out-of-state friends, and the masquerade is always a major focus for us. This wasn’t our year to MC (we alternate years with Zach and Jim), but it was our year to compete, and we had big costume plans. We also had a number of panels on the schedule, including some new ones that were written just for this year’s event.
But at the same time, the official announcement that ACEN was off was almost a relief. Many other conventions announced weeks ago that they were postponing or canceling this year’s events (some were directed by their state to do so). I’m sure some of ACEN’s overseas guests would have canceled their appearances. And frankly, given that the most recent projections suggest that if we don’t implement social distancing measures we could be looking at another two years of battling novel Coronavirus, I’m in favor of as much of the population as possible isolating at home until this thing runs its course. Being in extremely close contact with 35,000 other people during a pandemic is a bad idea. Canceling events is the right thing to do, even when it’s something thousands of us are looking forward to.
Still, it’s just one more in the long line of frustrations people have been facing since the start of the outbreak. Lately, I’ve talked to several people who are struggling with the progressive shutdown of society -- they’re out of work, they’re trapped at home, and now their creative and social outlets (including conventions) are beginning to vanish. Some people in seriously affected areas have been instructed not to leave home at all. One friend I spoke with this morning is young and healthy, but she lives with her elderly grandmother and can’t risk carrying the virus home. I am at higher risk from COVID-19 due to an existing health condition, so I need to avoid exposure. We’re both facing weeks, possibly months, of sitting at home. Alone. Waiting. It’s a stressful, uncertain time, and coping is harder when you’re isolated from your social support network and unable to participate in your usual activities.
There are already dozens (hundreds?) of posts with lists of all the free arts, culture, books, movies, and learning resources you can take advantage of while you’re stuck at home, so I won’t list those things here. Instead, I want to share some suggestions for things to do if you start feeling cooped up, isolated, or cut off from humanity:
Go outside. Unless your city mandates it, there’s no reason you have to stay indoors while social distancing. Go for a bike ride, take a stroll around the neighborhood, walk the dog, or just sit outdoors to get some sunlight. Say hello to someone. (Do stay at least six feet away from other people and wash your hands after touching things.)
Attend a convention -- online. Some cons are hosting online events for their attendees. Cleveland Concoction is running its costume contest online today. SDCC/WonderCon and Planet Comicon have created virtual Artist Alleys to help support the artists who would have been selling onsite. Check the website/social media of your favorite cons to learn about online gatherings, Discord servers, photo sharing, or other community events you can participate in.
Take a virtual tour of an exotic location. Google’s Expeditions app lets you explore everything from ancient Roman ruins to a NASA research center. Several of America’s national parks offer virtual tours, so you can enjoy some beautiful scenery. Or get a VR experience with Google Arts & Culture’s interactive documentary The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks, which allows you to see rarely-visited sites in 360 degrees.
Play a game with friends. Many gaming groups (including mine) already use video conferencing for tabletop game sessions. Skype or Google Hangouts support free group video calls; Discord and Telegram offer free voice calls. If you want to play screen-based party games such as Jackbox.tv, one person can stream the main screen on Twitch while all other players log in remotely on their phones. There are also dozens of online multiplayer games on Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox One.
Watch a movie with friends. If you all own the same DVD, put it on the TV while you video chat on your phone or computer. Or you can try Netflix Party, which syncs your streaming and adds group chat to your screen.
Check out all the new podcasts, vlogs and game streams. Not surprisingly, being stuck at home has prompted a huge number of people to create their own programming! (So much so that an audio drama I’m in actually took a ratings hit this week from the sheer number of new programs debuting, and one podcast service had a server go down for a few hours. <ad>Also, if you need something to listen to, check out Verity Weaver! It’s free!</ad>) Hit YouTube, Twitch, or your preferred podcast app to see what new programming is on offer. Watching a livestream or participating in a Q&A helps stave off social contact starvation.
Schedule a creative jam session. Normally a lot of us are in con crunch right now, gearing up for spring and summer conventions, and when events are canceled it saps our motivation. Contact your creative friends (of any type -- cosplayers, artists, knitters, etc.) and arrange a time to connect via voice or video conferencing. Plan your upcoming projects, problem-solve, or just chat as you all work on something creative. If your schedules don’t line up for a live session, create a Telegram group, Messenger chat or Discord server to share photos and encourage each other’s progress. Keep that creativity flowing!
Think of it as a staycation. I know it sounds flippant, but this is what I’ve been doing since day one. Instead of, “Oh, no, I’m stuck at home and can’t do that thing I wanted to do!” I’ve been training myself to think of the situation as, “Finally, I have an excuse to stay home and read that book/play that video game/organize my closet/do that other thing I’ve been putting off!” It’s just a mindset shift, but it really does help to focus on the positive. Think of isolation as an opportunity to get stuff done without interruption.
Above all, remember that we’re going to get through this, and life will eventually return to normal. Humanity faces a pandemic about every hundred years, and while it’s always a setback, history shows that we always bounce back with vigor. The devastating Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1920 was followed by the Roaring Twenties, after all.
So keep your head up, get some sunlight, and reach out to your friends using all the glorious technology we are lucky enough to have at our disposal. And maybe brush up on your Charleston, just in case.
