Muse: Ryuko Matoi from Kill la Kill, post-canon AU (other verses available, see below). 25 y.o., traveling Life-Fiber hunter (which gives her reasons to meet all kinds of characters).

Mun: Is very much of age, been roleplaying in various ways for like 15 years and then some.

Fast regeneration, super-strength and durability, but not infinite, she can die. Life-Fiber absorption (makes her stronger). Can harden her hands into claws, if need be, but it takes some effort. Can potentially drink blood at a crisis dying point, but would rather not to.

Bonus canon abilities are reserved to be used in case of exceptional crisis (see: godmodding/powermodding or pre-planned over-the-top threads).

Important headcanons:

Aroace (there's plenty an explanation on desktop). (This doesn't mean no shipping. Just a certain kind of shipping.)

While traveling crashes at friends' places chaotically when available. Especially likes to enter Satsuki's home through a window, 'cause it's fun to friendly bicker.

Talks to Senketsu out of habit, after one too many Life-Fibers absorbed she can actually hear him talking back.

Got her scissor blades back, since what else do you fight LF with. At some point had to absorb them too, which now lets her harden her hands into claws... but not for long. It's tiring.

Is down for not traveling alone sometimes, as long as you can handle yourself. Or if you are Mako.

WILL freak out if meeting Ragyo, Nui or Junketsu!Ryuko. (Can use this for angst.)

Verses:

Verse 1: Life-Fiber hunter Years after the finale, there's a sudden resurgence of Life-Fibers all over the globe due to power-hungry people going into willing contact with them. As the only creature on Earth still capable of going toe-to-toe with them (and not quite managing the "normal" life anyway), Ryuko steps up. Now travels around searching for the things and fighting them. 25 y.o.

Verse 2: OG anime Ryuko Matoi is a transfer student at Honnouji Academy trying to find out who killed her dad. You know the drill. (Mun can attempt doubling for Senketsu if need be.) 17 y.o.

Verse 2.5: Pre-canon Ryuko Matoi is a punk-ass student who can't make a friend to save her life and fights everyone on account of chronically not fitting in. Walking trouble. 14-16 y.o.

Verse 3: Cyberpunk AU (2077/Edgerunners inspired) Basically the canonical events, but slightly aged up and converted for the setting. A high-class corpo school, a loner nomad with a dead father, a corpo-bitch who experimented on hooking her own children up to Blackwall. Life-Fibers are rogue AIs, goku uniforms are implants, Senketsu is a friendly AI and Ryuko doesn't know that she's a digital construct of a dead teenaged stuffed in a highly chipped body. She's also trying not to think too hard about living at the house of an unethical ripperdoc. 18 y.o.

PHOENIX AU: Fun Facts

hey y’all, sorry for being MIA. I got sick when I went on vacation but I’m home now! No idea how frequently I will be posting but I will be spending the next several months forcing myself to write so yeehaw. Miyuki Sero made a bet with him during their second year involving Everclear, and it's the closest Toya's ever come to getting alcohol poisoning. Miss Kaminari forced him to clean the common room for two months as punishment

He can do the entire Ludacris rap in "Baby" by Justin Bieber

Has only cried a handful of times because of movies. Most of those times have been movies he's watched with his sister. But he'll never admit it

He and Natsuo crashed a sled into their father's car one winter, and proceeded to blame five year old Shoto for it...who was inside...with Enji...the entire time.

He has keyed the cars of all his sister's exes

PHOENIX AU Keigo Takami Fun Facts

Has sponsors from literally every place that sells chicken, but KFC is his place of choice

For one of their first dates, Keigo forced Toya to come along on a search for the "perfect chicken tender" where they ordered from every place and they ranked all of them. Led to a lot of arguments that left both of them crying from laughing so hard about how passionate the other was about their opinion

He owns several matching/complementing outfits with Rumi from their shopping spree days at the academy, and some of them are dresses

If he has the AUX there will be Broadway tunes, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, or classic rock ONLY. With minimal exceptions

He's always playing "I Wanna Party" from Rio unironically when he's getting ready in the morning and has developed a whole song and dance routine to it. occasionally, Toya will do the second verse if he's awake and Rue will do the female vocals. There have been several early dance parties at the PHOENIX Agency, and it's a pain for collaborating heroes when they have to travel team-up for missions

PHOENIX AU Rumi Usagiyama Fun Facts

She's a black belt in taekwondo, judo, Krav Maga, and generally kicking ass (BONUS: She has a trophy that says "best at kicking ass" that Toya had made for her as a birthday gift)

She feels guilty for being cold and mean to Toya for so long before they became friends, but she doesn't know how to approach him about it (even though he's left that all behind and doesn't hold it against her)

Her favorite workout playlist artists are Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion

Midnight helped her come to terms with her sexuality with her confidence and unapologetic expression

She's double-jointed, has never taken a steroid (contrary to popular belief in the tabloids), and prides herself on being healthy

PHOENIX AU Ryuko Tatsuma Fun Facts

Her mother used to make her do beauty pageants/contests, and she would win flawlessly every time

She was born into a very wealthy family, but ironically didn't let her riches go to her head until reaching fame

During school, she occasionally ate edibles to calm her nerves as she would obsess over her grades, which is why her parties always had them

She constantly showers Rumi with extravagant gifts, but Rumi considers Ryuko the greatest gift of all

(Not so fun fact and SPOILER) she left Rumi for Uwabami when she dumped her in Chapter 40

During their entire first year, Shinji was absolutely terrified of Toya because of their Quirk incompatibility (fire and wood don't mix)

He secretly had a slight crush on Rumi for a couple years, which is another reason why Yu never liked Rumi

He and Amari used to make conspiracy boards in the common room whenever they got high

He has acted as a getaway driver for a number of Toya's antics (he's the only person that doesn't make Toya carsick when he drives)

He scored the highest in Hero/Civilian/Villain Psychology during their Second and Third Years

My One And Only - Chapter 6

Thank you so much for all the notes and reblogs! As I’m writing this I’m currently writing chapter 14. As more chapters are being written, I try to make them longer. Before my target was around 1000 words then it progressed to 1700 and then to 2000 so newer chapters will be updated less frequently.

Alya shook her head. "That isn't what I'm trying to say. What I'm trying to find out is who does she is love now?"

Marinette had been the one to collect the dinner despite Damian's constant requests to help. Despite her short size, Marinette managed to transport the food from the door to the dinning table in his hotel room, which Damian found surprising as she was way much stronger than she looked. Damian thanked her for bringing the food and sat in the chair directly in front of her so that it would be much easier to talk, after pushing her chair in for her.

"So, Shaytan" Marinette said while struggling to cut the vegetarian steak. "What did you want to ask?".

Damian smiled and got up to place his hands on hers, then he helped cut the steak before sitting back down. She giggled. "Earlier you asked what my reason for coming to Paris was. I shall fully answer that question now. My reason for coming was to gain more information about the alleged attacks happening here" Damian was slightly shocked at how Marinette's facial expressions changed from happy and bubbly to serious, though he didn't show it. This was a serious topic after all.

"Well first of all, the attacks are happening, they have been for over a year now." Damian's shock was plastered all over his face 'They've been dealing with this for over a year?' "Second of all" she took a piece of steak and swallowed it before continuing. "The Paris police force aren't dealing with this by themselves, there are superheroes here"

"Well Angel, who are they?"

"Well when the attacks first started a superhero duo was always there to defeat them. A girl called Ladybug and a boy called Chat Noir" she took another bite of steak. "But since the villains have gotten a lot stronger, they've expanded to a superhero team. On hero's day was one of the most biggest attacks and at the time, the superhero team was at five members. The other heroes were Rena Rouge, Carapace and Queen Bee." Damian was impressed at how much Marinette could say without needing to take breaths of air.

"And who is the one responsible for these attacks?"

"Hawkmoth" Marinette said taking yet another piece of steak. "When someone's negative emotions passes a certain limit, Hawkmkth uses an Akuma to akumatize that person, turning them into a villain with powers. If you're wondering, an akuma is a butterfly filled with Hawkmoth's power. I heard he can control them to go to a certain victim but if the akuma is far away, he can't control the villain or get in contact with the akuma." Marinette took another piece of steak, in her defense it was really good, for a vegetarian steak. "But recently there has been a new villain working on his side, Mayura. She creates something similar to an akuma but it's call an amok and it's in the shape of a feather. What the amok does is create a sentimonster. A sentimonster is fueled by emotions and can be controlled only by the person who holds the object with the amok inside"

"Yes that does make sense. So how many superheroes has there been in total and what are the ages of all of them, including Hawkmoth and Mayura?"

"I believe there have been ten different superheroes." She began listing them all out loud. "Ladybug, Chat Noir, Rena Rouge, Carapace, Queen Bee, Viperion, Pegasus, Ryuko, King Monkey and Multimouse. Yep ten but most of them have only appeared once. And they're all in between the ages of 14-16, I'd say. Hawkmoth and Mayura however are adults"

"So you're saying that two adults are putting the lives of a maximum of ten kids in danger" Marinette nodded. "But what is his motive?"

"I honestly have no idea" Marinette put bluntly while putting another piece of steak in her mouth. She then glanced at the time and realised she had to go home soon. She looked at the half eaten steak, she sighed "I have to go Damian I'm so sorry, I'm can tell you every thing I know through text if you want me to,"

"No it's fine, you go home and home a good sleep. We can talk tomorrow" Damian was surprised when Marinette hugged him before leaving. Of course, he hugged her back.

A few hours after Marinette left, Damian opened the computer to a shared document, surprisingly, Tim was on it at the time. The system showed that Tim was typing something.

Tim: Wow, no rest for Demon Spawn eh?

Damian rolled his eyes at his older brother's comment. He dragged his mouse down the document, searching for a certain column labeled 'current situation'. There he could give a general idea of how bad it was here at Paris. Marinette and told him so much already but his gut told him that she had more to tell. Though he didn't like the thought of becoming soft, he didn't mind being that soft around Mari. 'Everyone else? Hell no'. He quickly found the column he was looking for. He then selected an option out of the possible five, 'critical'. This meant that Paris was in serious danger. He knew that Tim was watching, probably drowning himself in coffee, but the dark-haired boy was surprised when Tim didn't sent a message straight away. As the three dots appeared, indicating that Tim had begun to type, Damian signed off. He liked it when he seemed mysterious.

Then Damian remembered that Marinette never got to finish her steak. Not wanting to waste it, he decided to have it as a midnight snack.

"Oh Tikki! I had an amazing time with Damian" the bluenette gushed to her kwami.

"You seemed very happy in his company Marinette!" Tikki squeaked. "But how will you be able to move on after he's gone back to Gotham?"

Marinette frowned. "Well, I'll worry about that when the time comes". She then thought about all the fun she had at the dark-haired boy's hotel room then the thought about how he made her blush like mad. Again the moment made her blush again, just not as much as earlier. Then the thought hit her. "Tikki, when I put Damian's head on my lap, do you think he thought it meant something else?"

"You let him rest his head in you're lap? Wow I never saw that!" Marinette went red again, this time she didn't have Damian's shoulder to hide herself. 'I guess that's my new coping mechanism, but I'm not complaining. He's also really hot when he smirks- gAH'

It was 4 pm. Tim wasn't really tired, he was just a caffeine addict, this was his fifth cup in the span of a single hour. If Damian was here, he would likely look at him with judging eyes. 'But he isn't here so hah, take that Demon Spawn'. Just when he said that in his mind, a message arrived saying that Damian was online.

"Speak of the devil" Tim muttered, taking another sip of coffee. He decided to write him a message.

Tim: Wow, no rest for Demon Spawn eh?

Though he wasn't really expecting him to reply, he didn't expect Damian to do what he did next. Tim watched as Damian changed the situation column for 'No Information' to 'Critical'. "What the-" Tim saw that Dick was in the room. "Dick could you pull up a live feed from Paris?"

"Aight"

The TV showed a peaceful and quiet Paris, not like the one you would expect if it were labeled under 'critical'. Tim was so confused he began to type a message but noticed that Damian had signed off. Dick, seeing Tim's confused nature, came over to look at the computer. "What was he referring to? What the hell is going on?"

Absolutely! I absolutely adore manners too so kudos to you! God I sound like an old woman...anyways onward!

Lila and her whole thing goes like how she threatened basically, she did turn Marinette's friends against her and is just in general making her life hell. The only one's on Marinette's side are Chloe, Sabrina, Marc, Kagami, Aurore, Mireille, and Luka. Chloe and Sabrina are their own entity or that's how LIla views them, she doesn't think they are Marinette's allies so she leaves them alone.

But Lila starts to try and get Marinette in trouble again, not just with Bustier like she's been doing, and Adrien is doing nothing to help her. He even lectured her on her behavior practically every day.. Marinette had tried to resign as class president but Lila wouldn't let her, her classmates yelled at her each time about how she was just lazy and was doing it to be mean to them and bullying them and trying to make Lila feel pressured. Mlle Bustier was quick to scold her and give her a lecture about the Marinette's of the world, despite Chloe saying she was more than happy to take over the position. Then Lila went to Tom and Sabine with the class and told them she was bullying her and the others and not taking her position as class president seriously, and that they were really worried about her.

Tom and Sabine started to treat Marinette differently, they never really treated her as a daughter to begin with, more like a niece, but now they acted like they were housing a juvenile delinquent on probation or something. They started watching her more and making sure she wasn't in the house alone as much as she had been and it was making being Ladybug very difficult, as well as being the Guardian.

It was all becoming too much for Marinette, and she knew things were better for her mother, she was working for Wayne Enterprises again, specifically at his greenhouses there in Gotham and she was also the lead Botanist and was being allowed to continue her research as a biochemist. She was dating Harley Quinn who was more a vigilante now and who ran her own podcast since her doctor license was revoked, so she gave "unofficial" psychological advice while also talking about anything and everything that came to mind.

So when her mom called her, Marinette couldn't hold it back anymore and she cried and told her mother everything, and by everything I mean everything, including being Ladybug. She wanted to come home, to wanted to go back and live in Gotham. It really didn't take much convincing and it was ridiculously fast for Marinette to pack and get her school to give her her transcripts. She didn't know it was because Ivy demanded Batman contact Bruce Wayne and help her daughter get out of that ridiculous school, and then destroy it. Bruce agreed, not to destroy, but he did launch an investigation on the school that they were sure not to get away from without some damage, after getting Marinette's papers.

Ivy takes one of the private jets to personally pick up Marigold, because as soon as she gets her daughter they decide to burn her fake identity since it's caused her nothing but pain. Ivy has some choice words for Tom and Sabine, and then they go back to Gotham and Marinette can finally breath.

They decide she should do homeschooling since she's still Ladybug and the Guardian and it would be easier for her to slip away if she needed to for an Akuma. Ivy doesn't like that her daughter is in danger a lot and is basically Paris's sole protector besides Viperion and Donryu (formerly Ryuko) since the cat one doesn't show much and when he does he's not much help.

Ivy wants to help so badly and Marigold told her she'd think about it but if she let her mom help she would have to do exactly as she said. Harley wants to help too of course, and that was fun getting to see the two take to each other. It made her so happy that they liked each other and Marigold was even calling Harley Ma', which was super adorable.

Overall Marigold's move to Gotham was a great thing. But Ivy really wanted to make those little meatsacks her daughter used to call friends, pay for hurting her little sapling, as did Harley, and surprisingly Batman. He said they couldn't actually physically hurt them but he suggested outing the liar and yeah okay maybe that was a pretty good idea. Ivy is careful to leave put the bit about the magical terrorist since she's not exactly sure if her Marigold wants Batman to know.

Everything is great, perfect really. Then that rock star Jagged Stone announces he's leaving Paris because it's not "Rock n Roll enough now that his honorary niece is no longer living there." And that she "took the rocking-est notes with her when she left" so he was going to move back home which was coincidentally where his honorary niece loved...in Gotham...Marigold failed to mention that to her mother.

And then Marigold meets Damian Wayne one day when she's out buying fabric and the two seem to form a connection and Pamela really has to ask if this is all karma for when she was a villain.

first time doing something for ryuko! and it was super fun and nice to do! just a bunch of little thoughts that were surprisingly easy to come up with for all three of these amazing ladies! but holy shit writing for nemuri and rumi both makes me super happy and completely wrecks my soul. ANYWAY! i hope you’ll like what i came up with!

outside of her hero work, ryuko is a very simple and gentle person, and so, she needs a relationship and partner that agree with that side of hers, which is why she'd also prefer to date someone who isn't too interested in heroes and their work

she is very much aiming for long-term relationship and wouldn't even think to try to settle with someone she can't see herself spending the rest of her life with — do dragons mate for life? this one might.

being more reserved and shy, she likes someone who is confident in the way they express their feelings and affection for others. kind and generous people who are friendly and don't hesitate to tell their loved ones that they, well, love them!

soft-spoken people almost make her weak in the knees. ryuko would enjoy someone who talks to her and has a gentle tone. if they're willing to read out loud to her? she will positively melt against them and fall asleep right there and then

maybe someone who is passionate about what they do would be good for her? not a career-driven person, but rather someone who loves their job (especially if they work with kids) or their hobbies

MIDNIGHT ( kayama nemuri )

three words: cute, cuter, cutest. nemuri just can't see herself with someone she doesn't find cute. her criteria aren't limited to the whole cliché "young, petite, gentle soul who can't do any harm", though she does love these things

she focuses a lot on eyes. it's not about color or shape, but rather what she sees in them, you know? she likes eyes that are gentle, but also expressive. she wants to be able to see care, love or passion in her partners' eyes!

honesty and a strong sense of justice are things that she finds extremely attractive. passionate people who know what they believe in and stand their ground? but also know when they're in the wrong and won't hesitate to ask for forgiveness? hot hot hot.

a somewhat calm and quiet personality is a good match for her. someone on the more shy and reserved side. nemuri loves someone that she can fluster and tease and coax out of their shell (in a more poetic way, she wants to be the sun that makes the pretty flower bloom)

at the end of the day, nemuri just really wants someone she can come home to and enjoy a chill evening with. cook dinner together, snuggle up on the couch in pjs — someone who will give her all the physical affection and attention that she craves, when she needs it

MIRKO ( usagiyama rumi )

healthy. rumi likes people who are just as healthy as she is when it comes to her body. they don't need to workout all the time or anything like that, but she'd love a partner she can at least go for a morning jog with! and someone who doesn't mind all her healthy meals is a big bonus

she needs someone who can handle her energy levels and her brash personality since she can be a lot to deal with at time because of how brutally honest she tends to be, you know? but if they're just as brutally honest as her, rumi will both hate and love the tension

she isn't necessarily attracted only to loud personalities. rumi actually just likes a challenge, someone who doesn't take her shit. someone who is more reserved would be a challenge for her as well and she loves that!

people who are ripped catch her attention easily lbr — but it needs to be the healthy kind of ripped, not the 'dehydration for the sake of aesthetic hollywood abs' because she can spot those a mile away and it's really unattractive to her (don’t mean that she doesn’t love all body types because boooy, she sure does!)

long hair. it doesn't have to be super long. but she really likes at least shoulder length (no matter the gender identity) because it feels nice to play with her partner's hair when she gets distracted (which is all the time when she isn't working, or working out). hair has to be healthy and soft to the touch tho.

Damian typed to Marinette as they walked into the restaurant. He felt his phone vibrate and looked to see Marinette's responding message

Chat, Ryuko, and Viperion have to be involved, and no one gets seriously maimed.  

Deal.

Lunch went smoothly, until of course Dick asked about how they met. Marinette took a moment then said “Damian and I made a bet that if Damian won in a video game we would go prank Lila if I won then they’d go have some fun with a water balloon fight to blow off steam.” Not super far off from the truth, just missing a few key facts.

“It was a bad day for both of us. Lila was being Lila, and we hadn’t played that fighting game yet. Needless to say she was a lot better than I expected.” Damian finished her tale.

“I guess I’ll have to play you sometimes, I’m currently undefeated at the manor.” Jason said through a mouthful of rice.

“I guess so.” She said. Anyone else would think of her tone of voice as soft but Damian knew that voice, it was the innocent voice she used when she wanted people to underestimate her. He looked forward to the prospect of watching Todd fail miserably. Marinette’s phone started going off, she looked at and answered. “Yeah Adrien.” Damian couldn’t make out what he said but it was enough to startle Marinette. “Crap I completely spaced. I was caught up at lunch, can you stall Madame Bustier for me? I swear I’ll be there soon.” she shoved her phone in her bag while leaping out of her seat. “Thank you guys lovely meeting you. Let me know how much I owe you for lunch later.” With that she was out the door.

“We’re not having her pay us back. Right?” Tim asked.

“Definitely not. It’s on me this time.” Dick responded. “Also Bruce asked all of us to check up on the Wayne enterprises building while we’re here. Let’s head over after we finish up here.” A chorus of agreement followed.

After the trip to the Paris office the four bats went back to Damians residence. Damian secluded himself in his room taking that over talking with his brothers, plus he had to finish his plan for tonight, he’d tell Marinette the rest of it after she got out of school. He’d been at it for a couple of hours when a knock at his bedroom door tore him away from his work.

“What.” he said curtly annoyed at being interrupted. Jason poked his head through the door, he looked tired.

“Nice to see your still alive demon spawn, we hadn’t seen you in a few hours. Anyway Dick went to the store, and Tim and I are gonna crash. Actually Tim’s already crashed on the couch and I’m about to follow. Wanted to let you know in case you needed something.”

“Yeah yeah I’ll wake you up if I do.”

“Yeah that was actually my warning. Wake us up and you will get a fist to the face, fancy ninja skills or not.” Jason held his fist up for emphasis, Damian just laughed.

“Sure Todd, if you can catch me you can hit me.”

“Wow that Marinette really has loosened you up, before I don’t even think you’d respond to me.” he paused for a second, “oh speaking of which did I mention she’s at the door?”

“You could lead with that!” Damian said, throwing on his sweatshirt. He scooped up his notebook and a pair of shoes. He shoved his notebook in his messenger bag and started hopping on one foot down the hall trying to put his shoe on and get to the door as fast as possible. That was until he lost his balance and planted face first into the rug, notebook landing like a tent on top of his head. He lifted it up slightly to see Marinette trying to stifle a laugh and failing, miserably. The Kwamii at her side no doubt doing the exact same.

“You’re welcome!” Jason called from Damians room.

“I’m gonna kill him.” A very red Damian muttered.

“Oh don’t do that just yet, we have to plan tonight don’t we. anyway he’ll get his due tomorrow when I play him.” She was still smiling as she offered a hand to Damian to help him up, he could forget sometimes how ruthless she could be behind the sweet smile, he liked it sometimes.

“Yeah you’re right, anyway ready to head out? Are we doing Andre’s?”

“Sure we can meet the others in the park. Also is your brother ok, because it looks like he’s about to fall off the couch.” Damian looked over to see Tim’s sleeping head practically touching the floor, with his feet still laying horizontal. Damian gave him five minutes before crashing onto the floor.

“He’ll be fine, lets go.” The two walked out of the residence hand in hand.

“Everyone clear on the plan?” Damian asked, it was a couple hours after he and Marinette had left the apartment. The ice cream they got from Andre was long gone, and the sun was setting.

“I mean it sounds simple enough, my question is what you want me to do?” Luka said from the corner still strumming his guitar.

“If you could use your lyre for ominous music when we start, that would be perfect to freak Greyson out. He may not be religious but he still believes in ghosts. Also in case they ever catch on before we get to do the rest of it you can use second chance and we can do it again.”

“Sounds good, and I have just the song.” Luka may be a kind kid but he wasn’t above pranks on siblings, especially if it was for a friend.

“So when do we start?” Kagami was pretending to study while she talked to them over phone, her mother wouldn’t let her meet up with them.

“Same question over here!” Adrien was simultaneously stuck in his room so Marinette had him pulled up on videochat.

“After sundown, think you two can sneak out by then?” Damian responded.

“How bout ten that when my mom is asleep and I can sneak out even easier.”

Kagami offered.

“Sounds good to me if it is for everyone else.” A chorus of yeahs confirmed the ten time. “Perfect Kagami, Adrien see you then.” With that Damian and Marinette hung up their respective phones.

“I’ve gotta go get some homework done before then, so I’ll see the two of you at ten too.” Luka  got up and put his guitar in its case, which he then slung over his back. He grabbed his bike handles and started walking it out of the park.

“We’ll see you then Luka, oh say hi to your mom for me, and tell her I’ll have those pastries to her by next Tuesday!” Marinette called to him. He was already halfway out of the park so she had to shout a little louder.

“Will do!” he called back. Marinette and Damian waved bye as he disappeared around the corner.

“So Dames, what do you want to do now?” she turned to him.

“I don’t know but we’ve got a couple hours to kill, you have any ideas?”

“I have one.” She said slyly, he looked at her face to see mischief in her bluebell eyes and a smile on her lips.

It was their 7th game and Marinette had wiped the deck with Damian every time. He got maybe two kills over all the games. The duo were killing time in Marinette’s room and decided to play some video games.

“Well that was a fun game, play again?” She said setting her controller down and stretching her arms up. Damian had gotten slightly more use to being so thoroughly crushed, so he only gaped for a minute rather than everyone else’s 15 minute long gaping session.

“Mari I love you, but I don’t think I can lose to you again.”

“Come on you might win the next one.” She said lightly.

“Mari don’t tease me it’s unbecoming of you.”

“Doesn’t mean it’s not fun!” a buzz from her phone stopped her from saying another thing to annoy him.

“You ready to blow off some steam, ten o’clock is upon us.” she gave a mock bow towards Damian sticking with her Ice Prince theme from the text.

“If you cut it with the royalty shtick I’ll even buy you some new fabric afterwards.” “Hmmmmm tempting but unlikely to happen.”

“I figured, but thought I’d try.” he held out an arm to her, “then are you ready to go mess with my brother's princess?”

“Let’s suit up.” She grabbed his hand, their excitement palpable.

“This will be fun.”

My Current top 10 favorite Miraculous Ladybug Episodes and why (+analysis)

1. timetagger - the amount of possibilities this brings to the plot and insight is so fun. also, it’s one of the few things of writing and planning i appreciate in this series because it was hinted in the very beginning of s1 that alix’s watch was a miraculous, but now we get to see that connection. Seeing things that were hinted long ago end up having substance makes it more interesting. Also, I do thoroughly Alix as a character and loved to see her and see that she will have a bigger role in the future. This episode alone leads to so many theories and things that can be analyzed and makes it so fun - such as the idea that there is someone (besides master fu) that knows about their identities, and even further, about what happens in the future. The idea of a new hawk moth also comes to play. The akumatized villain from the future proves that there is a hawk moth in the future, but that it isn’t gabriel agreste. This brings into question of what happened to Gabriel and the current Hawk Moth? How did someone else of ill-intention end up the miraculous after hawk moth? Who is this new Hawk Moth? This brings so many theories and possibilities to where the show is heading. We also see chat noir and ladybug do still exist in the future as adults. We can only wonder and theorize about how theyve developed between present and future, though. Another small detail at the end that was interesting is i’m pretty sure chat broke the fourth wall?? At the end of the episode, chat is talking to ladybug and about what alix said about the future as they walk away, and started saying “maybe in the future you might even agree to see a movie with me. Hey, what if it was in the very near future? Like, the next show...”

2. sandboy - there are many reasons i enjoy this episode. first, i love the kwamis and i love learning more about them and having some focus on them. We learned more about background and history of the kwamis as well as see more than we had before. In addition, I think it brought good development to character, particularly for adrien/chat noir. Marinette’s and ladybug’s biggest nightmares weren’t too much of a surprise, and neither was adrien and chat noir’s when you think about it but foes bring more insight to him as a character and helps set up ideas for his character and things later. As adrien, his biggest nightmare was being trapped and cornered, obviously a result of how he’s treated by his father. While adrien tends to always seem chill and nice around people and like everything’s always fine, it shows there’s more we don’t see. Then, as chat noir, his biggest nightmare was that ladybug hated him. It was important to show how much chat noir really cares about his relationship with her, and not just romantically. It shows us this not only as a watcher, but so that ladybug sees too. This sets up well for the ny special, where ladybug gets upset with chat and says she can’t trust him. While not exactly like his nightmare where she despises him, it is parallel to his literal biggest nightmare and shows why he reacted the way he did and shows just how much ladybug saying that would affect him. I also very thoroughly enjoy the moment where adrien sees the sock plagg left when he sneaked out and he went “Plagg! who turned you into a sock!” i think i find it funnier than i should. 

3. heroes day p2 - not to be a ladynoir stan but that’s a big reason i enjoy this episode. When the other heroes they recruited fall, Ladybug gets worried and begins to lose hope. This isn’t very common for her, but it shows she’s not some perfect hero, she has times where she has doubts. However, chat noir was right there for her. He was able to encourage her and get her back into the spirit. I think this is important to show their relationship without thinking about it in a romantic way. It shows chat noirs full trust in ladybug, and how even if ladybug doesn’t always express it, it shows how she does appreciate and trust chat noir and that he is able to help her when she’s down, it’s a balance. Also, when chat noir is encouraging ladybug, one thing he says “let’s go back to what always worked - you and me against the world, m’lady.” In my eyes, this reinforces the “soulmate” idea and the importance of the two. Don’t get me wrong, I love the other heroes and miraculouses being used, and maybe its just me, but I think it’s important that despite the other heroes being helpful, chat noir and ladybug are the core, and that reinforces that. Also I honestly love that adrien was detransformed at the time of saying that line. In addition to ladynoir, there’s the plot and villain progression of hawk moth and nathalie, which sparks the plot to really start picking up after this event. 

4. reverser - I love marc a lot, i relate to his character a lot so i enjoyed having him and I wish we had more outside of this episode. There are also other fun characters we get to see that we don’t see as much (Alex and nathaniel). I also like the akumartizaion set up, i think it’s a very realistic situation in which misunderstanding takes over and there’s no specific person to blame, and i appreciate the demonstration of that. Not to be a chat noir stan, but him being a “scaredy cat” after getting hit by the reverser was so cute and funny and i enjoyed that. Again, back to the other characters, as i mentioned before i like alix a lot. i enjoyed her mocking chloe in the episode and then not caring when the teacher tried to say she should be nice. and then i liked the moment she scared chat noir. and then i enjoyed seeing her role in helping the duo in defeating reverser. also, there was a moment on the beginning of the episode where adrien teased marinette and any moment where adriens chat noir side comes out is my favorite. in conclusion, i love seeing the characters we see in this episode and chat noir was cute. 

5. puppeteer 2 - as much as the wax statue scene gives me the worst second hand embarrassment of my entire life, the episode gave us a clearer insight to adriens perspective on his relation with marinette, which i enjoyed, and made me like him as a character even more. while i love a good “she’s just a friend” joke, it is confirmed in this episode he’s genuinely oblivious - which he shouldn’t be perceived as dumb for. social cues are harder for some people and can cause problems but it’s not smth people can help, we also have to remember he has very limited experience with people. anyway, it gives us that insight and i believe it’s important. he even expressed acknowledgment of how he doesn’t pick these things up sometimes. so he interpreted marinettes reaction wrong, and he believed marinette even didn’t like him. it distressed him so much to think that was the case. this was the insight we needed to see how adrien perceives their relationship and how much it really developed. even if he doesn’t have a crush on her, it introduces the idea that he still genuinely cares about her and having a relationship with her - parallel to us seeing ladybug see that with chat, which i believe is very important for the development of lovesquare and the plot. not to mention the frusturation of dramatic irony at the end when adrien, seemingly for the first time we’ve seen him as adrien, mention to someone else how he DOES love someone. while painful for marinette, i do think it’s interested because i don’t even think he’s mentioned the fact he loves someone to nino, showing how he still considers marinette as someone he can be close too. 

6. ikari gozen - I love Kagami and I appreciated this kind of redemption arc. I wasn’t sure how I felt about her at first, but after this episode she’s one of the most relatable characters, personally. In turn, it also helps Marinette learn a good lesson. So yeah, the main reason i enjoy this episode is Kagami’s character development and her character. Ryuko is also so cool.

7. kwamibuster - i mentioned this before but i love the kwamis a lot and i love getting to see them in episodes. in this episode we got to see not only interactions between plagg and tikki, but get a chance to meet other kwamis and see their miraculous jewelry and some of their abilities. we also see that marinette and adrien are not incapable of connecting dots, realizing both plagg and tikki were in the same school. however, plagg and tikki try to reason them out of it and they both did things to throw the other of their track, so they didn’t keep their theories - but it does show they’re not Completely Oblivious. 

8. troublemaker - there’s a lot of small things and moments that make me appreciate this episode rather than one big thing. to start, i enjoy penny’s character a lot and this is one the few episodes we really get to see her and the only one where we get focus on her. in addition, she was a good villain and arguably the closest a villain got to taking ladybug’s miraculous, taking an earring. then theres marinettes adrien photo collection being exposed, and adriens facial expressions in reaction to it made me laugh. and then of course, the scene following the fight, adrien talks to marinette. one noticeable thing is that marinette didnt stutter as much as she had and got out full thoughts. good for her ! and it shows that she is slowly beginning to be more comfortable with him. then of course, adrien. he starts by asking if she was okay since the fight happened at her house (even though he was literally there and knows damn well marinette wasn’t even there, kinda anyway). and then, as i mentioned before, my favorite thing ever is adriens chat noir side coming out, which is exactly what happened. he teased marinette for the photos, both asking if she was lying and then the “even in the most unlikely places” line. the thing about this is that this is something we barely see happen with adrien as adrien, yet it happened with marinette, which shows he’s comfortable enough with her to do that. and then of course the sincere moment of him saying he’s glad she’s her fan, he’s just so sweet good for him i love him. 

9. origins - a classic. provides us background we needed on how things start and characters meant. there’s so much things to take from origins about their characters and the story in general. for one, marinette not even wanting to be ladybug. i feel this fit her character and was more realistic than if she accepted it right away. and then her being a bit of a mess the first time and not even capturing the akuma. i think that was important; to show ladybug and marinette are not perfect, but that’s what makes her a better and more relatable character. it wouldn’t be fun if she were perfect from the beginning. and then chat noir, who was a lot less reluctant. in contrast to marinette. he had been isolated his whole life and forced to try to fit a perfect mold. this gave him not only physical freedom he always desired but also the personal freedom to be able to be who he wanted. it of course also shows the balance of the two heroes. ladybug was nervous and had no hope at the beginning, but was able to get though with chat noirs encouragement - which is something that comes up every so often, but shows their balance and dynamic. and then of course . the umbrella scene. one of the most iconic moments, and also one thing i’ve noted is that we barely ever seeadrien laugh like he did in that scene, and it makes me treasure that moment more. and despite the whole “she’s just a friend” thing, it was important in that moment and you can see how important it is to him that he has a friend, and probably establishes the trust and appreciation for marinette we see as the show progresses as she was very important to him being kind of his first friend and that it holds a different kind of importance to him. 

10. glaciator - an iconic episode of course. while marichat is probably my least favorite in terms of love square ships, i think marichat moments are some of the best. i think it’s where the two are more showing themselves to each other than in any other way. chat gets to see truly marinette in which she isn’t a nervous mess and is actually acting like herself, and marinette gets to see chat has more to him than she saw previously as ladybug. with his constant flirting and joking with her, it seemed that she interpreted this as this is just his personality and it didn’t mean much, that maybe he acted the same with anyone. but with the interactions of this episode, she learns that’s not the case, he genuinely and truly loves and cares and about ladybug, it was more than just joking around. this realization is big for marinette and she even comments that she misjudged him. this episode allows eachother to rlly learn more about eachother. and then it helps ladybug be honest. she’s completely honest with chat after that, saying there’s someone else and she doesn’t want to lead him on, but that sets the stage for them to still grow on their platonic relationship, which is still important. ladybug for the seemingly first time directly tells chat how he’s important to her, and chat admits that his friendship with her is the most important thing to him, showing us more about adrien/chats character, as well as demonstrates despite his love for ladybug the platonic relationship still holds great importance with seems to contrast how marinette views adrien at this moment. 

honorable mentions: 

reflekdoll - this was almost in the top 10 but i changed it last minute. i appreciate learning more about juleka and hope we get more to grown on that later. and not to be an adrien stan but he looked really pretty with his outfit for marinettes shoot. one thing i feel is also important to notice is how easily he was willing to take off his miraculous for the sake of marinettes shoot. he didn’t even really hesitate? that wasn’t really surprising for marinette to do, but for adrien it again represents a small thing that shows he really appreciates and cares about her (whether it’s romantic or not). the concept of them switching miraculouses were also fun, and seeing a little bit of tikki and plagg interactions again. the reason that it didn’t end up in the top 10 was because i think the execution of their miraculous switch should’ve been done much better. i feel like the writing made chat look dumber than he is and made ladybug look more bossy than she is. while i feel part of this was meant to demonstrate they’re truly made for their own miraculous, it could’ve been demonstrated without making the character look worse. 

startrain - i don’t mean to be basic but the adrinette in this episode was super cute. however that’s not the only reason this episode stood out. hawk moth rlly sent his own son into space, u know as one does. and then the irony of him saying “how ironic i have to depend on my enemies (ladybug and chat noir) to save my son” like if you think that’s ironic then… but anyway . i also enjoyed seeing more max in the episode. his transformation is fun and i think we deserved a max based episode where he (or markov) didn’t have to get akumatized. also i feel like in the beginning of the episode, i like how adrien flat out decided to go to london without even asking his dad. i think he’s slowly stopping to care so much about his fathers rules and realizing what he needs for himself and this shows that.

Viperion was running casual rounds, what Chat liked to call pop-up patrol, though he usually added a pun in there somewhere, when his lyre chirped with an incoming call. He rolled across the next flat rooftop, shedding his momentum and coming to a stop. He pressed on the correct yellow diamond on the instrument and weapon to pop up his communicator screen.

"Hey Chat," he said with a smile. "Long time no see." He pressed the tip of his tongue to the back of one fang. Those had been a surprise development when he became an adult, by miraculous standards. He was used to them, but they were fun to press his extra-sensitive snake tongue to. In time, Chat Noir had picked up a set of sharp teeth as well, and Ladybug acquired actual functioning wings.

"Good to see you're back," Chat replied. "Short visit or long one, this time?" He was carrying a box wrapped in the same brown paper as all the gifts he'd been leaving for Marinette.

"A nice long stay." He was glad to be home for the foreseeable future.  While he enjoyed traveling and performing, he didn't care for the drama, headaches, and chaos. His mum's boat had more than enough chaos to tide him over for a lifetime. Plus, Marinette, his heart and home,  was here. It was no surprise to anyone who knew him that he was more creative, writing loads more music, when he was here.

"Excellent," Chat said with a purr. "That being the case, there's a new place you need to see." His grin was eager and almost as full of joy as he'd seen on the young man Luka knew hid behind that mask.

"Is there, now?" Viperion drawled, suspecting he'd already seen it. But it would harm no one to let Chat Noir think he'd brought him there. It would also provide him more information on the situation.

"Hells to the yeah," Chat replied. "Let's meet up, and I'll show you." He held up the box in one hand. "I have something to drop off anyway."

"Now before we get there," Chat said, pausing on the edge of a rooftop to give Viperion as serious a look as he'd ever seen on the cat's face. "Are you fortunate enough to be familiar with the angel known as Marinette Dupain-Cheng?" He waved one hand and quickly amended, "No identifiers, just… do you know who she is?"

Viperion grinned. Oh, he knew her all right, and since Chat's civilian self was there when Ladybug gave him the snake miraculous, he knew the other man was aware of who he was and that he knew Marinette. But appearances had to be maintained. "You could say I'm well acquainted with her, and her work."

Chat beamed at him and hopped happily from one foot to the other. "Oh good. She's so invested in the things she does, and you can't really know her if you aren't at least passing familiar with her work."

Viperion nodded. Chat wasn't wrong.

"So…" Chat took a deep breath. "Are you a member of the crushing on Marinette club?"

He squashed the laugh that wanted to erupt out. Melodie tried to warn him, but he thought she was being melodramatic. "There's…" He cleared his throat. "There's a club?"

Chat snorted. "Of course there's a club. I mean… you've seen her. She's just amazing." He sighed dreamily. "So clever, so quick, and all in that adorable package."

"She is the whole package," Viperion agreed. The'd been officially dating for just shy of two weeks, and that was just enough time to realize how much more incredible she was than he'd previously thought. "Pretty sure I'm the president of the club. I've been crushing on her for… a very long time."

"Pffft. Good luck wrestling that title away from Queenie and Ryuko," Chat said, laughing. 

It was as he'd expected. The entire team was drawn to her, and it made sense. She was divine creation and deserved all the affection. And they were all improved from their interactions with her. She made them all better, stronger, happier, just more of who they were simply by her presence, even if the rest of the team wasn't aware of that.

"Anyway, as if she wasn't already the pinnacle of perfection, she made a very special place for the heroes of Paris." He led the way to Marinette's balcony.

While Luka had seen the Hero Cafe several times with his precious muse, coming to it from the rooftops let him see it the way the other heroes surely had. It was an oasis just for them, painstakingly crafted with all their needs and comfort in mind. As he landed lightly on the floor, it felt less like a mere place and more like a love letter to the heroes in her care. He couldn't have kept the smile from his face even if he wanted to, and he really didn't want to.

Even before being paired with Tikki, before taking on the mantle of guardian, Marinette obviously had so much love to give. Her dual roles only enhanced that, and while he was sure she would have been content dating just himself, coming to the cafe like this with Chat reinforced his belief that she'd be happier if she was allowed to love all of them in whatever way she was called to. Who knew that being on the road so often with Jagged would open his eyes and his heart to relationship options that would better fit his own situation?

"Isn't it incredible?" Chat asked, pulling Viperion out of his own headspace.

"It really is," Viperion agreed softly. Yes. He'd make sure Marinette understood how important this really was to the other heroes, if it was the last thing he did. He felt the huge smile stretching his face. He was going to enjoy that.

Luka swept his hand over the top of the chest he'd helped Marinette disassemble, transport, and reassemble on the balcony. They'd found it when they were wandering about Port de Grenelle. One of the larger yacht owners was getting rid of it as part of a remodel. It was designed to take the weather, but having been on a rich person's yacht, it was more attractive than the storage cubbies on the Liberty. It was a perfect addition to Marinette's cafe, allowing another place for outdoor storage, but also serving as a bench for times when more of the team was present and the few chairs weren't enough.

Marinette opened the chest and tucked in the little bins she'd been assembling in her sewing corner for the past week.

"Whatchya got there, Melodie?" he asked, leaning forward in interest. He was surprised when she handed him the one labeled Viperion.

She grinned at him. "Go ahead. Open it up."

He unlatched the lid and peeked inside to find fabric the teal color of his super suit. He raised an eyebrow. "What did you make…" he glanced at the stack of bins. "...for all of us?"

Marinette giggled. "You'll have to take it out to see.  And it's too late to stop me. They're all done already."

He let out a snort. "As if I could deny you." All she had to do was shoot him the kitten eyes, and even if his goal was to help her, he'd cave.  Well… she didn't quite know that.  And to be fair, if her well-being were truly at stake, he was pretty sure he could even endure those. He pulled out a loose pair of sweats, a zip hoodie, and a soft fabric domino mask a little larger than the one Sass provided, and without the fangs.

"They're in case anyone needs or wants to transform while they're here." She pointed to the extra fabric he'd helped her hang in the corner two days ago. "That'll drop into a privacy screen. Heroes can go back there, transform, change, and come out looking mostly like their transformed selves in their own themed sweats." She beamed at him.

He shook his head, knowing there was a stupid smile on his face and not caring at all. "This is why you're the guardian," he murmured. "You think of everything. You take such good care of us." He set aside the bin and leaned into her space, close enough to feel the heat of her skin on his own. "And in return, I plan to take very good care of you." He heard her breath catch a little.

She tilted her head just enough to meet his eyes, her bottom lip trapped in her teeth for a moment. "Is that a promise, or a threat?" she asked, all Ladybug in attitude and posture.

"Yes." He gently pounced at her, lowering her to the floor as he kissed her stupid.

Luka was cuddling with Marinette in the Hero Cafe when Chat Noir stopped by. It turned out that the new storage chest made a great loveseat.

"Ah," Chat said, looking a bit surprised. "Princess! Good evening!"

Luka smothered his laugh as he saw the black cat awkwardly attempting to hide a parcel behind his back. He loosened his grip on his girlfriend and gently encouraged her to go meet the hero.

"What do you have there, Kitty?" she asked knowingly.

Chat Noir smiled meekly. "A token of my appreciation." It sounded like a question.

"I've told you I don't need gifts, right?" she asked.

Chat nodded, his shoulders hunched a little so he could cant his head up for the most effective angle for his kitten eyes.  Adrien definitely knew how to position his body for the best impact. "But Princess," he whined plaintively. "You're awesome and deserve gifts."

Luka couldn't hold back the chuckle then. "C'mon Melodie. Let the nice cat give you a gift. He's right."

Chat beamed at Luka, clearly appreciating being backed up.

"Oh." Marinette looked at the two of them, suddenly a bit flustered. Luka knew she could hold her own around either of them, but she was still kind of new to the idea that she was allowed to like them both, and it wasn't common for her to be Marinette around both of them. "Um… Chat, this is Luka. Luka, this is Chat Noir, obviously."

Luka reached out and shook Chat's hand, finding this whole thing amusing. "Have a seat. Let us get you fixed up with a snack or something." He waved toward the cafe chairs and eased past the hero and his girlfriend to reach the refrigerator.

Chat glanced from Luka to Marinette. "Uh, I don't mean to interrupt."

"Pffft! As if," Marinette said with a giggle. "This is the Hero Cafe. You are welcome here any time."

"You're not interrupting anything," Luka added. "We were waiting for you."

Chat's eyes went round in his surprise. "You were?"

Marinette bounced a bit on her toes in her excitement. "Luka helped me set up some new amenities." She scampered over and demonstrated the drop curtain. "You now have a changing cubicle, if you need it." She peeked out from behind the curtain. "Luka fits no problem, so it should be more than big enough for any of the heroes."

"And that's not even the best part," Luka added.

Marinette tugged the rope to raise the curtain before pouncing toward the storage chest. "I've made a sweatsuit for every hero." She pulled out the top two boxes, showing the labels of Viperion and Chat Noir."

Chat was absolutely silent as he opened his box, and the joy and awe on his face was something he'd never seen his friend wear before. 

"You want some of Papa Tom's classic stew from tonight, or the orange sesame chicken from last night?" Luka asked, pulling out a plate as he looked over the menu on the whiteboard.

"Oh…" Chat fumbled a little, quickly sneaking a hug to the hoodie before carefully folding it back up. "I don't really need anything. I should probably get back to work."

"You should probably have a meal first," Marinette countered.

Chat looked down at his hands, a hint of pink visible in his cheeks despite the low light. "I'll take the orange chicken."

Luka assembled a plate, popping it into the microwave.

"Is there milk in the refrigerator, or did I forget to bring that up?" Marinette asked.

"I can go get it," Luka assured her. He'd distracted her from her stocking task, after all.

Marinette shook her head and darted down her ladder before he could stop her. "No worries.  I got it."

Luka shook his head, letting out a breathy laugh. His Melodie was capable of great bravery, but she could also bolt in panic at the first hint of intimidating conversations.

"So… are you two dating?" Chat asked. It was only because Luka knew both Adrien and Chat so well that he could see the other man bracing himself for painful news. His smile went a little pinched.

"Yes, but," Luka replied.

Instead of looking hurt, Chat looked confused, which was definitely preferable. "Yes… but?"

"Yes, we are dating," Luka added, considering the best way to explain. He was glad they'd gotten Chat Noir solo for this first. "But we don't have a traditional relationship." He pulled the plate out of the microwave and went to join Chat near the table. He only had to wave toward the bin that doubled as a bench, and the hero sat down. "I know Marinette is special to other people." 

Chat blinked at him in surprise, but didn't speak.

"And I know you're one of the people she holds in highest regard," Luka added.

The poor cat hero was apparently surprised and flustered to receive such praise. They needed to work on his self-esteem, probably on both sides of his mask.

 "I knew that before we even talked about dating." Luka shrugged. "At least before we talked about how a relationship might work now that I'm done traveling for a while." A polyamorous relationship hadn't really occurred to him before his more recent tour run. It turned out that Jagged's drummer was a member of a long term triad.

 "And… you're okay with me coming here? Giving her gifts?" Chat asked.

"I don't own her," Luka explained. "And it would be terribly wrong of me to try to control who she sees and spends time with. Ultimately, I want my Melodie to be happy." He shrugged again. "Sure, she might be able to be happy with just me, and she was willing to try that, but I think she'll be happiest if she's not expected to be so… restrictive in her affections."

"Oh." Chat Noir sat with his hands folded neatly in his lap, his mouth a tight O and his eyes as wide as pie plates. "So… it's okay that I like her?"

Luka smiled, nodding. "It's fine with me, and I can assure you that she does like you. Very much." While it might have been good for Marinette to have this conversation herself, he wanted to help her. "And it's not exactly a platonic feeling."

Marinette appeared with a jug of milk. "I'm back. Sorry about that." Her music was adorably flustered, and he suspected she'd had to talk herself into coming back up here to have this important conversation.

"Get Chat his drink and come sit with us, Melodie," he suggested, settling himself on the bench with just enough space between himself and Chat for her.

Marinette did as he asked, though she initially attempted to sit on one of the chairs. Luka slipped a long arm around her and tugged her into place between them. "So… uh… what have you two been talking about?"

Luka gave her a sly smile as he slipped an arm around her.

When she turned to Chat, the hero immediately went flustered. "Ah… eh… Luka was explaining your relationship?"

"There's no need to be nervous," Luka assured the other man. "Or shy. Though if you prefer to talk about this without me, I understand."

Chat did not look reassured.

"No," Marinette said quietly. She shook her head. "No, that's not how I want to do it."

"Okay." Luka gave her a gentle side hug. "You're in charge of this, Melodie. We'll do things how you want, and at your pace." He knew it was the right response when she leaned into him for a moment.

"This is kind of new and I'm really awkward," she muttered.

Luka chuckled and met Chat's softly amused look.

Chat cleared his throat. "So you two have an… open relationship? Is that the right name for it?" He obviously wanted to help make things easier for Marinette, and that only endeared him to Luka more.

"Not…" Marinette huffed. "It's not exactly open. We're not... neither of us are just going to go out and date other people. That's not what this is. There's… more communication than that. But, we're not opposed to bringing other people into the relationship." After their initial conversation about what their relationship could look like, she'd gone on a research bender, reading anything she could about polyamorous relationships. She'd brought back each new understanding to Luka, either over the phone or in person so they could discuss what was a fit for them.

"So a new person in the relationship would be dating both of you?" Chat asked, his head tilted.

Luka buried his smile in Marinette's hair. While he wouldn't personally be adverse to that, he had no clue where Adrien fell on the romantic or sexual spectrums.

"Not… exactly." Marinette frowned and stared at her toes. "So if one of us wants to date someone else, in addition to each other, we'll talk about it. It's a… respectful check in to make sure everything still feels comfortable and good. It's not a good idea to use polyamory as a bandage for a relationship that isn't working." Her mountains of research were showing. "And you might be surprised how often people do that.  So we check in. And if things aren't okay, we address that first, figure out what's wrong and deal with it before complicating things with another person." She glanced at Luka and he offered her an encouraging smile. "These people could be dating just one of us, or both of us. And each relationship will have its own negotiation and agreement."

"Oh, wow." Chat swallowed, and Luka realized his pupils were larger than normal. "That's… it sounds like really thoughtful planning, but also kinda complicated."

"Life is kinda complicated," Luka offered. "And it gets more so any time we make a new friend or add something new to our lives, hobbies, people…"

"Instruments," Marinette teased.

Luka chuckled. "Yes, instruments definitely complicate things."

Chat looked amused. "Really?"

"He's got this hurdy gurdy that is such a dramatic shit," Marinette pointed out. "It has a tantrum if it's not played every three days or so and goes wildly out of tune."

"Clyde is a dramatic shit," Luka agreed.

"He had to make space in his luggage to bring it with on his last tour because it was such a brat last time he went away." She giggled happily. "How did your bandmates like Clyde?"

Luka snorted. "They could all relate. Jagged has an acoustic guitar that does the same thing."

They sat in silence for a moment, smiles on all their faces before Chat finally spoke again. "I imagine being a superhero makes relationships even more complicated."

"Probably," Luka agreed. "But maybe a lot of the complications there are more superficial than you think. Or it gets easier with practice."

"And with anything, you have to weigh the positives against the negatives," Marinette suggested. "You have to figure out if it's worth the complication."

Chat nodded. "Yeah. Definitely not something to rush into without thinking it through."

"Enough serious stuff," Luka said. "You should eat your dinner before it gets cold, and we should watch that movie if we're going to."

"We could bring the laptop up here if you'd like to join us," Marinette offered.

"Thank you for the invite, Princess. But I think I'm going to pass for tonight. I do have work to get back to." Chat gave her a sweet smile. "But perhaps another time we could do that."

Luka encouraged Marinette down into her room so they could leave Chat to his thoughts.

Adrien is afraid of loosing LB

Remember when Chat tried to make Ladybug jealous? Yeah I cried... 

Look, even if she has rejected him so many times, he still has hope and that is just so sad. I believe Adrien is a very stubborn person, very persistent too, this for a normal situation is a good quality in a person but I feel this comes with the trauma of loosing his mother. 

He clings to much to the idea of having Ladybug that he cannot open his eyes and see that there is Marinette who is in love with him, or the fact that there is Kagami and could be a good match to him. 

I am not so sure about the chronological order in S3 but I believe this is at least somewhere after Adrien starts hanging with Kagami more. Which is so wrong in so many levels, like the boy is giving Kagami some hopes that something might happen, even tho he hasn't let go of his feeling for LB. 

Is so sad to see that even tho Ladybug tried to reason with him, that the sentimonster mas not te real one, he believed the sentimonster, because deep down he wanted it to be true. He wanted his lady to love him just the way he loves her. We could argue that sentimonster apear to be the real thing because they have feelings and whatever, but Adrian knew, he knew LB was in love with someone else and that he couldn't get a chance because she just view him as a VERY GOOD FRIEND (you see? everything comes back to hunt you kitty okno)

So that’s a thing I hated at the end of this season. Adrien didn't chose Kagami. Like.. ok yes, we can see Adrigami at the end being all lovedovey but did he say out loud, “Kagami I am ready to make a choice, I am going to stay with you”? NOOOOO he did not!!!! And remember she said that it was hurtful, that he was indecisive AND excuse me but she has a point. Never be that person, it is so hurtful for everybody involve. DON’T DO THAT.

And then again, in the same episode he flirted with Ryuko but once LB appeared to be jealous he was all over her again, like OMG did I really make you jealous?? His behavior screams “If LB gives me a chance, I am not waisting my time and would leave Kagami for her” and it is just not right.

I feel like he has this idea that since he once lost someone he loved, he cannot loose his lady too. So he is being careful with their relationship, whatever it is. He doesn't want her to hate him, remember Sandboy? Well that is a nightmare to him, so if LB wants to be just friends? he is gonna give her that. She wants a relationship? fine. But he cannot make her angry because that would mean loosing her. 

Let’s also not forget that there are many times he sacrifice himself for Ladybug, ok, yeah maybe it may be because she is the only person that can bring everything back the way it was because of her powers, but it is every time, he protects her. I feel like it is more than just “she can fix everything”, it is more of “I can not bare watching you get hurt”. He spend an entire month using the second chance, just to save her every single time, failing in the process. (Poor Chaton... that must have been a torture and a big trauma)

So in a way Adrien is really selfish, he can and will be going out with other girls because it’s his way of kinda fulfilling his loneliness (and also to try to forget LB), he’ll start noticing things he couldn't see before, because he will take a little brake from Ladybug. But don’t get him wrong, he’ll be there for LB whenever she needs him and for sure he will come back to her if she is willing to give him a chance. 

You know? Kagami and Adrien are so alike, even in the way they love. I’m sure you have read about this a lot, so I'm not going to bother you with explanation, but listen, she and him love the same way. Remember when Kagami said she didn't want to hurt Marinette, even tho she wouldn't give up on Adrien? She is very serious with him and will do anything to get him, even at cost of friendship.

Same with Adrien, he will do anything to be with Ladybug, even giving up his life to spend his rest of his days with her. (Yeah, he said it in Gamer 2.0) it doesn't matter what it is, the only thing he can't do is lose her. 

And all of this just leads me to thing that his obliviousness to Marinette’s feelings is a sort of self defense mechanism... for real there is no other explanation.... then again, this is getting too long so might as well do another post for this theory.

Mt. Lady | Takeyama Yu

So I’m just gonna guess that they’re just now coming out of school. They’re legal, at least, I mean Yu isn’t that old herself. She’s very charming, though, it’s basically the backbone of her career and why she’s so popular. Yu enjoys helping her darling with things even if she has no idea what it’s about. Say they’re starting college, she’ll offer to help them even if she knows zip about the subject. I don’t think Yu really sees the problem with age difference, her darling isn’t a literal child so she doesn’t see anything wrong with her obsessive feelings towards them. She will let them know she’s older than them so she can have a little power over them, though.

Mandalay | Sosaki Shino

If her darling is younger than her, Shino is going to be a little conflicted. Even if the age gap isn’t dramatic, she’s a hero. If it gets out that she’s getting all sweet on someone younger than her it could literally destroy her life as a hero. For the most part Shino acts like a older sister to her darling even though her actual feelings may be more intense. She’ll bring Kota around her darling all of the time, too. She likes seeing her nephew and her darling interacting and it’s even better when they get along. Shino often thinks about how having a family with her darling would be, but she waits a little while before acting on her love for them. Based 9n how long she waits, rejection isn’t an option.

Pixie-Bob | Tsuchikawa Ryuko

She knows that it may be seen as scandalous, but age doesn’t exactly matter to her as long as her darling isn’t a literal child. Ryuko is desperate for love, she’s been known to chase after random people before, but that changed once she met her darling. Ryuko genuinely loves them and because she loves them so much she can’t bring herself to care about the age difference. She doesn’t wait and she doesn’t let anyone else get in her way of being with her darling. Ryuko can get very bratty when faced with rejection, though. She, like mentioned before, is desperate. She’s finally found someone who she thinks is a great match for herself so she isn’t planning on letting them go anytime soon.

Ragdoll | Shiretoko Tomoko

She’s very positive about her love for her darling. Tomoko realizes that the age gap may be a problem for some people, but it doesn’t necessarily bother her. Her darling is legal (hopefully), so it isn’t like she’s doing anything illegal. So, after her incident Tomoko will maybe ask her darling to be like a caretaker for her. She may not be immobilized, but it’s more of an emotional thing for her, she needs someone she trusts by her side and that just so happens to be her darling in this case. She slowly becomes more close with her darling and they form a semi-normal relationship together. She’s still very possessive, but Tomoko is fine as long as her darling doesn’t try to leave her.

Kazimir x Hawks ( Romantically / Platonically) : @animaaerius​ I have the lovely Lumos to thank for this beautiful bird and angel ship. Honestly I think it started out as Kazimir being curious about Hawks, since it seems like those with wings are rare to come by? And it grew to friendship, one where they could chat with each other and discuss their wings and even groom each other and then it eventually became a ship. I love their dynamic since Hawks is so easy going ( at least he tries or appears to be ) and then you have the over serious Kaz. Then you have the added complication that Kaz acts like a vigilante at times and you have him drawing the attention of a hero and it makes it all the more interesting. I love birb friends. 

Kazimir x Dabi ( Enemies to Lovers :3 ) :  OOF A BIG FAV OF MINE. I haven’t been able to ship this since.... oof I think I first created Kazimir? But it is one that I still love and secretly hope for. Kaz h a t e s villains or those he deems unworthy and in a verse for this to happen, one thing leads to another and he ends up joining the league of villains as their “healer / doctor.” He HATES Dabi. But as they spend more time together and antagonize each other, they end up sleeping together. It’s a ship that completely pushes Kaz’s boundaries and that is what I love about it? He likes to act as if he isn’t interested in Dabi and that’s another thing that I love to explore with him. Kaz is someone with morals, albeit somewhat grey ones and falling into a ship with Dabi, someone I think we can all agree is twisted due to his past makes the dynamic something that is always fun to explore. Mind you this could happen just as easily as Enemies to Unlikely Friends and I’m all for it. 

Kazimir x Ryukyu ( Romantically ) : Something Birb ( @errantinfinity​ )  and I discussed a while back, again closer to when I first created him, but moving forward. Once again, I love pairing off Kaz with heroes, he’s morally grey and does things he deems “ right “ but by normal standards are not. He plays god a little bit, even if he means well. It adds unknown tension between him and Ryukyu, but ultimately I love the idea of 1) Ryuko having someone 2)  Kaz possibly realizing the error of his ways and 3) at least by Birb’s Ryuko’s standards, someone eventually to open up to who will love her wholeheartedly ( if you don’t know Birb’s backstory for her, let me tell you, it is very sad and she deserves all the love in the world ) . ASDFGH anyways I love them and need to send more stuff to Birb from Kaz. 

Kazimir x Zach ( ZachKaz? AngelSiren? I FORGET) : @seiirenes​ this one here OOF. Kaz and a villain :clap: a ship we just started to dub as Hades and Persephone. Kaz loves to hate ( and love) one Siren. I honestly forget the complete dynamics or how they met and how things completely got off the ground but... Zachariah and Kazimir end up falling for each other despite their differences, both in personality and alliances and it makes for a fun time plotting. ( Eventually they get married too GASP)  Regardless of the details, Zach grew on Kaz and even if he is loathe to admit it, he loves the Siren deeply and wants nothing but the best for him, even if he has to get after him from time to time. Another example of  me loving to place my muses with their opposites. Angel and Demon, Dubiously Morally Straight Vigilante with a Morally Grey Villain, etc etc. I don’t know but I love all dynamics for them, or verses. It’s too good to pass up. 

Kazimir x Overhaul ( Leader/ Platonic / Toxic Romantic ) : Honestly... I can’t say anything other than that I love toxic ships and the thought of the angel being dragged in by a demon, cough Overhaul, and convinced of his world view. There was a time when I desperately wanted to write a verse where Kaz was a part of the yakuza, but I never got around to it. It always made me think about how disgusted Kai would be by his clear mutation of a quirk, but even Kai wouldn’t be able to overlook the possibilities of his quirk. Kaz could easily take over all the healing for Overhaul, aka less touching, plus with the medical knowledge he has, he’d be able to help him as well. Though Kaz would never agree to harming Eri, regardless it was a ship I’ve always wanted to explore but never got the chance outside of my head. 

Harper x Kazimir ( @mckiingbiird​ ) : This is one I’m still exploring and learning about but I love the idea of a civilian and a lawyer at that with Kazimir ( someone who was studying to be a doctor) and once again could be described as morally grey due to his extreme views. Honestly I love Aspie for suggesting this because YES, OC x OC. And Harper is an absolute delight, cutie and badass and probably one of the more normal ships for Kaz. Someone he can understand far easier than any of the villains and heroes I keep tossing at him LMAO. But again, they seem so cute together and I;m really excited to explore the two of them dating and getting to know one another as well as dating one another because Kaz can finally genuinely like someone with worrying about his morals right away or being stopped by his beliefs. 

ANYWAYS. I have a few others, but that is it for now.  This is mainly BNHA, but tbh one ship that was teased with me was Kazimir x Chuuya and I still think about it from time to time. Angel with a literal God? He’d be questioning his very existence.

Goop Plays Kill la Kill the Game: IF (Ryuko Episodes 5-8)

It’s been a while.

Episode 5

Writing about these episodes has been a struggle. I wouldn’t be able to narrow down a single reason for my eight-month hiatus from IF’s story mode, but I can say that it’s difficult to talk about content that is overwhelmingly—and disappointingly—a rehash of scenes I’d already watched before.

Ryuko’s fifth episode especially feels like a game of “spot the difference.” Segments of Satsuki’s story are repeated with astonishingly minor changes, and while this has been an issue with earlier Ryuko episodes (1 and 3), by episode 5, it’s starting to feel very tedious.

I won’t deny that the slight alterations are charming—they very much are! Mako’s contribution to Ryuko and Senketsu’s fight against Nui, for example, is adorable:

Mako: My dad says, “When you’re outnumbered, get more weapons!” An eye for an eye, a blade for a blade!

However, such minimal additions feel like a dishearteningly poor use of the player’s time. If I hadn’t already questioned it before, these chapters really made me question the choice of a two-campaign story mode. 

It’s not that I don’t see the appeal of such a structure; there’s something fun in telling one side of a story and then changing the perception of that story by telling another side of it. Plus, with IF in particular, I think there was a goal—at least to some extent—of confounding players with Satsuki’s ending. I could see Ryuko’s campaign as a means of making the plot more interactive, which is of course fitting for a video game. By not spelling everything out right away, players are encouraged to unravel the mystery and put the pieces together. 

Satsuki: I had a bad dream....

But... there’s just too much overlap for me to feel that the two-campaign structure was the most effective storytelling decision. The choice perhaps makes more sense from a gaming standpoint; it’s easier to focus on one playable character rather than jump around between two. But I don’t know—perhaps it could have been fun to give players a feel for more of this game’s roster all at once. Maybe we could have played as the Elite Four or Ragyo or Nui, too.

Because from a story standpoint? One major letdown of Ryuko’s fifth episode is that actually fighting Nui completely lacks the power that the cutscene in Satsuki’s campaign has.

Sure, that scene certainly doesn’t have the impact of similar moments in the anime (episodes 18 and 21/22), but you can’t really expect it to, and it works well within the context of IF. Ryuko and Senketsu haven’t been through as much together, but Ryuko still keeps her temper under control to prevent a repeat of hurting Senketsu from it again, they burst into battle with “Before my body is dry” playing, and though the animations in the game can be stiff and limited, it’s still sweet. 

Ryuko: Won’t know ‘til I try! So let’s do this!

They sparkle! Their hearts are as one! They’re uniting to take down this threat.

But in Ryuko’s story? You just fight the fight. You miss out on Ryuko shit-talking Nui, you miss out on the song (seriously, was it just the struggling Steam port, or does “Before my body is dry” really not play during the fight?), and most importantly, the emotion I get from the cutscene is largely lost.

Don’t get me wrong—skipping a repetitive scene is appreciated. But at the same time, the omission makes me long for a single story mode. Players could have fought Nui with “Before my body is dry” playing and watched the Satsuki-story cutscene upon victory. That bit of “Satsuki’s” story already focuses so much on Ryuko that in some ways, it honestly feels more “Ryuko” than Ryuko’s story! Why not just have a unified story mode?

Ryuko’s episodes shine when they significantly differ from what players already witnessed in Satsuki’s campaign. The very beginning of episode 5 is charming because seeing Ryuko just wanting to smash things is legitimately amusing.

Ryuko: Oh! So, I just gotta smack ‘em all in the head.

But this could have easily fit into a single story that switched perspectives. And in fact, moving into episode 6...

Episode 6

It’s almost humorous that Satsuki’s story has purposeful omissions to “justify” the existence of Ryuko’s campaign. I am astounded at how Mako literally does not exist in the Satsuki equivalent of Ryuko’s sixth episode:

Seriously, what? This reminds me of Kingdom Hearts jokes about how it’s rude of Disney movies to totally edit out Sora, Donald, and Goofy.

But jokes aside, the Kingdom Hearts comparison actually has some real weight in regards to IF. In Kingdom Hearts, the Disney worlds are—at least, in my opinion—the most fun and engaging when they do more than simply rehash the films they’re based on with Sora, Donald, and Goofy added. In the same way, Ryuko’s campaign in IF is the most fun and engaging when it does more than simply rehash Satsuki’s campaign with Mako added.

And why was Mako even literally edited out of Satsuki’s cutscenes in the first place? It’s really a bigger discussion, but this choice only adds to my frustrations with how Kill la Kill handles Mako’s character. I’ve already written about my beef with the anime in that regard, but IF is even worse. Mako’s so inconsequential to the story (at least thus far) that she can be totally cut out and have absolutely nothing change. For goodness’ sake, she sleeps for a good chunk of her screentime!

Which... is actually an issue I have with the Grand Summoners crossover game, too....

Ryuko: She’s [Mako’s] already asleep!

But in any case, Mako’s presence in the IF story seems to be purely because she’s a popular character. It’s disappointing to me that Kazuki Nakashima couldn’t find more things for her to do.

And it’s sad that she’s literally edited out of Satsuki’s scenes. I really cannot get over that. What the what.

More to the actual content of Ryuko’s sixth episode, the first part is just old hash browns (plus Mako), but the second part is much more intriguing. I find it curious that Senketsu knows right away what the Primordial Life Fiber is, but Ryuko doesn’t. Does he have a connection with it that Ryuko lacks because her Life Fibers haven’t been awoken yet?

Senketsu: That... is what’s known as the Primordial Life Fiber.

Also, same, Mako, same. I also call Nui and Ragyo’s Primordial Life Fiber-y attacks in this game “meatballs.”

Mako: Ooooh! It looks like a big ol’ meatball!

I feel like my previous write-ups on IF already express a lot of what I could say regarding this episode, but I will again reiterate that the character interactions are charming. It’s nice to hear Ryuko laugh (even if in a taunting way), and the Elite Four are absolutely adorable.

Ryuko: Ha! Whatever. I’d like to see you try!

Houka: Oh, my God. Do they have to be so loud? Our enemies can hear us from a mile away.

And since this is a video game and all, in regards to the one fight in episode 6, it’s a bit of a pain; battling multiple enemies doesn’t make for the most enjoyable experience because of the camera and inability to properly lock on to targets. But IF excels in the little details. The dialogue when other characters join you for the fight is as amusing as always. 

There really should be subtitles, though. It’s super poor accessibility.

Episode 6 also briefly questions the nature of the world. Earlier episodes of Ryuko’s campaign had Senketsu—and Nui—note that something felt off about time. Here, Senketsu outright says that time in the Fiber Palace is “seems unstable,” and interestingly, the camera focuses on Ryuko when he wonders if it’s the location or “something else” that’s causing the abnormality.

Senketsu: The flow of time here seems unstable. Is this place causing it to happen...? Or... is something else triggering it....

It’s not in this episode, but given that Ragyo later describes Ryuko as “the singularity,” perhaps she is the one messing up the world.

I think Ryuko sums up my thoughts, though.

Ryuko: I don’t get what’s goin’ on.

Of course, probably the most notable aspect of episode 6 is the ending, and while I could see right through what was happening, I have to admit that Ryuko going at Mako with the Scissor Blades is a stellar finish.

Ryuko: I still gotta get revenge for my dad.

Senketsu: What are you doing, Ryuko?!

Episode 7

However...

Ryuko: Oh, blow it out yer ass... Nui Harime!

I got some issues with this.

For those who have been Kill la Kill-ing for as long as I have, you might remember that there was a flood of Mako-is-Nui theories immediately after the show’s finale. Amusingly, character designer Sushio outright denied the idea in a Tweet, and a Studio Trigger panel at Anime Expo 2014 (6th post from the top) also shot the notion down.

Sushio: It is no relationship at all

But fake Makos actually ain’t absent from Kill la Kill. In the official Drama CDs that came packaged with Japanese releases of the anime, there are two instances of fake Makos. The first happens in CD 1, where Maiko Ogure impersonates Mako for a huge portion of the runtime. The second happens in CD 4, where—“funnily” enough—Nui herself impersonates Mako after Ryuko has her heart brutally ripped out of her chest by her own mother.

And here’s my issue with IF’s portrayal: in both of these Drama CD cases, Ryuko is fooled. Mako isn’t Mako for tons of the first CD, and Ryuko doesn’t notice. And, in the Nui situation, it’s Senketsu who has to tell her that the “Mako” before them is not actually Mako. Which goes completely counter to what IF does!

It’s not that I’m against Ryuko recognizing a fraud, but her inability to in the Drama CDs lends insight into her character that I find fitting. Ryuko fails to identify the fake Makos in the CDs because Ryuko initially closes her heart off to the girl—something she outright admits in episode 22 (and which the English dub makes particularly prominent).

Ryuko: Yeah, you [Mako] too! You’re like the most persistent chick I ever met! You didn’t care if I pushed you away! You kept coming back and coming back like a yo-yo!

However, after ripping Junketsu from her body, Ryuko becomes far more open, and it’d be really powerful for her to correctly identify a fake Mako then. It’d show how their relationship has grown and become stronger.

In IF, Mako and Ryuko have hardly had the development they undergo in the anime, and further, Ryuko’s explanation for how she knew it was Nui doesn’t make a lick of sense!

Nui-Mako: How’d you know it was me?

Ryuko: Easy! After Mako wakes up, she’s always got drool on her face.

As Ryuko seemed to have already deduced that “Mako” was Nui before even looking at her, how in the world does this work?

Episode 7 has more questionable character writing for Ryuko later on, too. I’ve already written at great lengths about how I find her attitude regarding murder totally OOC, but Nui’s death scene also has such a strange line regarding Ryuko’s feelings towards Satsuki:

Nui: Guess who ordered me to take the Rending Scissors from your daddy! Give up? It was Satsuki!

Ryuko: If she did, she musta had a good reason for it.

As sweet as the sentiment is, and as much as I understand that it’s there to point out how not even Nui can tear apart Ryuko and Satsuki’s bond, it leaves me totally baffled. Satsuki must have had a good reason to issue the order that killed her father, and Ryuko’s chill with that? At this point in the story, the kind of unwavering faith in Satsuki that Ryuko displays here is completely unearned. I could see Ryuko at the end of the anime feeling this way, but IF Ryuko? Not at all! She barely knows Satsuki!

But for all my gripes regarding the storyline, we Kill la Kill fans are starving. (Well, at least I am, anyway.) Even if Ryuko’s words to Nui make no sense, it is something I would have liked the anime to explore more, and the character interactions here are undeniably sweet. I love Ryuko and Senketsu’s banter and how it shows how comfortable and in tune with each other they are. I love Ryuko’s silly dialogue to Satsuki and how Satsuki smiles at it, telling us that even the “ice-cold” Student Council President can’t help but get a bit soft at this dorky shounen protagonist.

Ryuko: I hate family drama. But I said I’d save Satsuki, sooo...

Senketsu: I had a feeling you’d say that.

Ryuko: Looks like you’re having a really shitty day, Satsuki!

The battle that finishes up this episode, with “Blumenkranz” playing in the background and the Elite Four and Satsuki joining the fight with cute dialogue, is a joy, too. There are a lot of little details that I really appreciate.

(I also realized this time around that you can stop Ragyo’s Instant Kill and didn’t get obliterated by Shinra-Kouketsu like I did in Satsuki’s story.) 

Ragyo: Your sins shall be purged along with your pathetic body!

Episode 8

But in regards to the plot of IF, Ryuko’s eighth episode finally starts dropping some more answers. As the ending of Satsuki’s story had implied, the world is outright said here to be her dream, created from Junketsu:

Ragyo: Junketsu took your [Satsuki’s] dreams and made them tangible. That is the distorted world we see now.

However, I still can’t say I get it. When Satsuki wakes up at the end of her story, it’s the start of episode 1 of the anime. She hasn’t come into contact with Junketsu yet, so how has this distorted world even been created in the first place? I guess Life Fibers can just mess with time?

I’m also kinda amused that the world is said to be what Satsuki wants to happen, yet she describes it as a “bad dream” when she wakes up.

But the big “new” information is Ragyo’s assertion that Ryuko is “the singularity”:

Ragyo: I knew it. You were the singularity, Ryuko Matoi.

As Ragyo explains, she could have taken over this fake world (and perhaps merged it with the real one, judging by her comment in Satsuki’s story about how such a world “can even be spun into a single yarn with the Primordial Life Fiber”), but Ryuko got in the way:

Ragyo: Since my Life Fibers are much more powerful than Junketsu’s, I could’ve taken this planet over. Then, I could’ve enslaved humanity and begun the process of turning it... into a Cocoon Sphere. Yes, I could’ve. If it wasn’t for your existence, Ryuko Matoi.

Now, there have been hints that something’s up with Ryuko all throughout IF, but I can’t say I really know what to make of it. Senketsu remarks that Ryuko’s oddly strong in the first episode of her campaign, Ragyo adds to this and suggests that Ryuko’s affecting the Primordial Life Fiber in the same episode, and then, there also seems to be the implication that Ryuko is triggering the weird sense of time in her sixth episode. The final episode of Satsuki’s story seems to feature Ryuko absorbing Life Fibers, too.

It makes sense for Ryuko to affect Satsuki’s dream world, of course; Ryuko has Life Fibers in her, and she’s also the sister whom Satsuki is ultimately fighting for. I’ve seen theories that the Primordial Life Fiber takes on the shape of a baby to represent the baby sister Satsuki thought she’d lost (and at least in the English dub, Ryuko does refer to the baby as a “she,” further connecting the baby to the lost sister); so perhaps, even if Satsuki doesn’t recognize her connection to Ryuko, maybe the Life Fibers do. Ryuko has power in the dream world because, in a lot of ways, Ryuko is Satsuki’s dream. Maybe that’s the reason that Satsuki only gets flashes of scenes between her and Ryuko in the anime when the baby connects with her, too.

Who knows? I can only hope that episodes 9 and 10 will clear this story up.

I’ve obviously got a lot of questions, but I know this is basically the end. I’m not sure how much explanation to expect going forward, and I’m still wondering about things that don’t even necessarily (?) have to do with the dream world, too. Like, whatever was the point of that moment with Ragyo and one of Senketsu’s scraps? And what was bothering Shiro?

Shiro: There’s just one thing that bothers me...

I said in the beginning of this tl;dr report that I couldn’t pinpoint a single reason for my inability to write it for eight months. But maybe part of the reason is that it’s kind of nice to not know the ending. As long as I don’t play it, there’s still some official Kill la Kill content that I haven’t experienced yet, and it could be anything.

But at the same time, I don’t know how much longer I can go without seeing Senketsu-Kisaragi, so.

The thing—i.e., this monstrous essay—that was holding me back from playing through to the end is now complete! And I’m ready to finally finish this game.

My Review of The Rising of the Shield Hero

VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!

Yeah, this warning because apparently I curse more than normal here. That should give you a fun indicator of what you’re in for.

Is this a joke? Is Medea really going to watch a recent Isekai anime?

No joke. I am. Yeah, since just about every Isekai I’ve ever watched was made before the year 2012, I thought it was time. And in case you’re not hip to the lingo, Isekai is where a random person is transported to a strange world (different from their’s) and go on an adventure. Things like Escaflowne, InuYasha, Fushigi Yugi, Kyou Kara Maou, and to a far-lesser extent, Sword Art Online! But because I haven’t watched anything made past 2012, and haven’t watched things like Konosuba, ReZero, or Overlord, my knowledge is shit and I should be ashamed.

So I’m going to start with one of 2019’s best animes, The Rising of the Shield Hero.

Naofumi Iwatani was checking out light novels when he was transported into another world. But unlike many other Isekais with this similar setup, Naofumi isn’t alone.

He and three other boys (from alternate timelines of Japan) are transported as well to the kingdom of Melromarc. These four boys are going to be the saviors of the kingdom as the “Four Cardinal Heroes” where they must combat against these entities known as “waves”. However, Naofumi is seen as the weakling from the very beginning due to being the holder of the shield (and is now known as the “Shield Hero”). But it goes even further than that! The king of Melromarc immediately shows his disdain for the shield hero due to the previous shield hero doing something to him. I don’t know what, just fuck the king. The kingdom, the other heroes, and the people of the kingdom did just about everything to Naofumi to make him feel like trash. If he was on fire, they wouldn’t even spit on him to put him out!

Being the lowest-level weapon user, no one will join his team and even if they did…they would swindle him, set him up for failure, and spread the worst lie you could ever lie about. But Naofumi can’t return home due to all four weapon users must be there until they defeat the waves. So Naofumi is stuck in a new world where literally everyone hates him or fears him.

That is until he buys a slave (named Raphtalia) and their EXP points can grow. Along the way, he obtains an egg that hatches into a filolial (later named Filo) who has the ability of turning into a human female. And every now and then, the second princess of Melromarc (named Melty) will come along with Naofumi. Trust me, she’s the nice one in that family.

Let’s watch the struggles and rising of the Shield Hero!

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: So this is licensed by Crunchyroll (but I think FUNimation dipped it’s cookie in this milk). I know these two companies divorced some time ago, but FUNimation sees no problem piggy-backing off of Crunchyroll when they get a hit. And yes, this got an English dub and because of that, YES I watched the whole thing dubbed! Done by the good folks in L.A.! I gotta say this was a well-done dub. Well, they did one thing right by hiring Erica Mendez to play Raphtalia. Just about everything Mendez plays is friggin’ gold! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

FAVORITE CHARACTER: I know I’m gonna have fun with the next category, but I think I spent most of this series hating on several people where I forgot to pick a character I liked.

Well folks, I gotta say that I loved Raphtalia. And after her, Filo! Then Elhart, Queen Melromarc, Melty, and Fitoria! With the exception of Elhart, it’s all women! That’s rare! Don’t worry, there’s one woman that has received a restraining order from this category. On with the worst!

DISLIKED CHARACTER: Prior to watching this series, I have gotten several warnings about one particular character! Princess Malty or Myne, whatever people call her. This woman is despised throughout the anime community and even going so far as to say she’s on “horrible character” status left only to infamous characters like Griffith, Makoto Itou, and Shou Tucker. And I’m like, “WOW, what did she do, kill a pope?” I mean seriously, how bad could she possibly…?!

FUCK THIS BITCH: Oh this bitch can burn at the stake for all I care! Yes, everyone else who treated Naofumi like shit can go jump off a bridge. Because I hold no sympathy for towns-idiots that treat a hero with no respect (as I’ve said before with One Punch Man and Dragon Ball Z)! But Myne just took that zero respect and pushed it to a crispy 425 degrees of fuck-roast! In the first episode, she seemed genuine with pitying Naofumi because no one would join his team. That didn’t even last a whole day. Myne ends up faking a rape by lying to the kingdom that Naofumi sexually assaulted her.

As if faking an assault wasn’t bad enough, screwing townspeople for your own gain is another story. She would take over a whole town and give no fucks if it’s destroyed by her or her fuck-face spear-hero. Add to that fuck-cake, every time you run into Naofumi, you find some way to screw him over time and time again. This bitch tampered with a fight between the shield and spear hero so that Naofumi could fail and they could steal his only team member away from him! You have your father, the church, your dickhead boy-toy of yours, and the royals wrapped around your little finger. Myne just continues to be worse than tainted peanut butter. I wish she would catch the worst STD imaginable and die a painful death!

ANYONE ELSE WHO NEEDS TO DIE IN THIS SERIES?: So obviously I hate Bitch and Trash (Myne and the King). And I have the same kind of respect for the townspeople who treat Naofumi like shit. I ain’t got time to be dealing with townsidiots again. But if there was anyone else that should get a mention of how much I want for them to be set on fire and I’ll just sit there drinking my ginger ale, it would be Motoyasu.

Now by no means do I hate him more than Miss Bitch over here. But I hate him on the same level as Shinji from the Fate series (which is now teetering on my top 10). I question why he’s still alive and why no one has introduced his face to a jagged boulder. Unlike the other heroes Ren and Itsuki, this guy has got a vendetta against Naofumi from the get-go. And this was like before the sexual alligations came about. After that incident, this fuckturd tries at every turn to make Naofumi’s life worse than it already is by stealing away his crew and challenging him every chance he gets. And when he’s not doing that, he’s screwing over the townspeople and doing very little to be a “hero” (which is his freakin’ title). Then again, Ren and Itsuki aren’t great heroes either, it’s just I really need to lay into Spear-Dick for the shit he’s done.

SHIPPING: Hmm…aaaaahhhh….eeeeee…urrrrggggh…

Naofumi x Raphtalia: I know Naofumi doesn’t see Raphtalia as a romantic partner and more as a partner on his team, but Raphtalia doesn’t see it that way. She is 100% loyal to Master Naofumi. Who could blame her? Naofumi saved her from a lifetime of enslavement and cured her from an illness she’s had for years. She’s grateful and every other hero is crap in her eyes! She’s worshipped the shield hero since she was younger when she would hear stories about the shield hero. So imagine her worry every time Naofumi talks about going back to his home world, she gets horribly upset. Me being very skeptical here, I can’t really imagine this going any further than team partners. I can’t see at the end of the day Naofumi staying in Melromarc forever or Raphtalia somehow returning to Naofumi’s world when all of this ends. So for now, I’m just going to see where this takes us.

FUNNIEST MOMENT: Whenever Motoyasu gets conked in his frank-and-two-beans by Filo! If anyone deserves to be whammed in the nuts, it’s Motoyasu.

SADDEST MOMENT: I don’t usually mention sad moments in anime anymore, but one moment touched me and that was episode 15 where we learned a little more about Raphtalia’s past. Raphtalia, even after losing her parents in a wave attack, she tries her best to keep a smile on her face. But shortly after that, she and many other demi-humans were taken away from their homes and sold off to a nobleman. This is when we see some pretty inhumane moments where Raphtalia and many of her friends are whipped for the fun of it, starved to death, and sold off to traders.

In this episode, we learn about a few of Raphtalia’s friends (Keel and Rifana) from her younger days. The day Raphtalia got sold off, it looked like Rifana was teetering towards death. When the Shield Hero’s party came to rescue the surviving demi-humans (like Keel), Raphtalia went to see if Rifana could possibly be alive. And if the disturbing picture of Rifana’s skeleton doesn’t churn your stomach, I really don’t know what will. God damn, that was just messed up!

I CANNOT TELL A LIE, THIS ANIME HURT: I know I have sadistic tendencies and take joy in the misery of others. But I seriously cannot enjoy any second of the humiliation and degredation given to Naofumi. And it was because of the abuse put on the Shield Hero that made me feel sick to my stomach just watching all this happen to this guy. I thought it would last for a few episodes at the most, but it carried on a lot further than I imagined. Almost to the very end! And every episode you put on, you just wish for some kind of karma to kick in or for one more person to be nice to Naofumi or something, anything to happen!

But because the king has a vendetta against the previous Shield Hero, Naofumi has had to pay a heavy toll by having every horrible crime or offense thrown at him including rape, murder, attempted murder, cheating, witchcraft, and treason. AND HE COMMITTED NONE OF THESE OFFENSES! So you spend just about 20 episodes watching this poor boy having to go through this hell. I can’t even imagine having to go through this kind of torment and some of these moments make me ill in my stomach and quite pissed off. So like I said, this anime hurts to watch.

ENDING: As it turns out, the kingdom is corrupt under the rule of the king and his daughter, Princess Cunt (yeah, BIG shocker there). How corrupt? Well, they were in cahoots with the church that had their own religion praising only 3 of the Heroes (guess which one they don’t praise)! That was until the pope decided that everything must be wiped away because they are “unclean”. That includes the monarchy, the heroes, and their crew! Thankfully, they were able to put an end to this cult, with a little help from the true leader of Melromarc, Queen Mirelia of Melromarc. She finally shows herself and her powers on the battlefield. And now ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the moment everyone and their mama have been waiting for.

JUSTICE IS SERVED: With the queen’s return, come some harsh sentences to her own family. Her husband, the king and her daughter, Princess Malty! I gotta tell you, seeing these two in chains makes my heart so happy. The king was guilty of summoning the four heroes prematurely and causing a lot of harm to the kingdom of Melromarc with the church. Then the queen puts a seal on Myne’s chest, giving her unimaginable pain whenever she lied. That still didn’t stop the bitch from lying! In one swoop, it’s proven that Naofumi was innocent the whole time and that the king and princess were worse than period cramps. And for their crimes, THEY ARE SENTENCED TO DEATH BY GUILLOTINE!

FUCK YEAH! BRING IT ON!

CUT THEIR FUCKING HEADS OFF!

Yeah…unfortunately for my blood-lust self, that didn’t happen. Instead, Naofumi stopped the queen seconds before blood was to splatter. Claiming that the princess and king should be stripped from their titles and must go through life with new names! The king will be named “Trash” and Malty/Myne will be named “Bitch” (or “Whore” when she’s traveling). Okay, I guess it’s all good. With that, the church of the three heroes is abolished and handled a lot better than I thought.

But seriously Queenie, was it really, REALLY a good idea to keep your daughter alive? I know she’s your own daughter and you felt severe hesitation (in the anime) before calling for her execution. But for fuck’s sake, literally a day after she’s spared from the guillotine, she’s poisoning food meant for her sister Melty, Naofumi, and his friends!

IN THIS AFTERMATH: Now has Naofumi finally obtained acceptance throughout the kingdom? Yes and no! Yes, it’s true that the people of the land respected Naofumi after all he’s done. It’s just that some of the other heroes and castle men who still treat Naofumi with such disrespect. The queen wishes for all four heroes to be treated equally and to get along so that maybe they can defeat the waves without too much trouble. Hell, the queen of the filolials also said the same thing! I think Ren and Itsuki have kinda been on board with this for a while (even if they are kinda dickish about it). It’s just that Motoyasu’s still a condescending dick to Naofumi! Sigh!

FINAL WAVE ATTACK: Final one for now! On their way to another land, Naofumi ends up getting chummy with two travelers (L’Arc and Therese).

We meet these fuckers three episodes before the finale.

They’re bad guys, aren’t they?!

Something like that! Yeah, the next wave attack was coming up real quick. And the heroes have to go up against Glass again (the woman who caused a lot of trouble in the midway point of the series). But it turns out L’Arc and Therese are in cahoots with Glass. But it gets really…complicated here!

Glass and L’Arc are both fan and scythe heroes from another world. And they’re destroying the waves on this side along with destroying the people of this world to prevent catastrophy in their world. Yeah, finale time guys! How many parallel worlds and heroes are there?

Fuck me! Well, Naofumi and the other hammy heroes were able to stop the wave attack once more. And we even get to watch Queen Melromarc in action again! In this aftermath, Naofumi gets a new member on his team. Yes, it’s another female, but at least this one is older than all the other girls that hang with him (making this a little less ewwwie). Rishia was abandoned by Itsuki’s team for…reasons. So she’s going to join Naofumi after she helped in the last wave attack. And we get some last-moment hopeful scenes as we see things that give me hope for people in this series. Raphtalia’s old friends and homeland is getting back into the swing of things and Naofumi will take control over the land. And we wait for this promoted second and third season Crunchyroll swears by. Seriously guys, when are we getting more Shield Hero?

DON’T KNOW! READ THE LIGHT NOVEL AND STOP ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS!

If you can’t already tell, I liked this series! Yes it was unbelievably painful to watch certain things where all of these people gang up on Naofumi and screw him eight ways from Sunday, but I guess good stories have a little struggle. Except here, it’s a lot of struggling! It was an interesting tale and is giving me a little hope for the Isekai genre as a whole. Will I get into all the other recent ones so I can one day watch Isekai Quartet? Don’t get too cocky! I’ll stick to this and maybe head on over to Konosuba later on.

Rising of the Shield Hero was definitely a tale and I highly recommend it. It’s just that if you’re prone to anger when it comes to absolute injustice, half of this series might be a little unbearable to handle. But there were several great moments (particularly from Raphtalia) that kept me going with this series.

Especially episode 4! Best episode of the series! Her undying devotion for Naofumi was definitely one to behold! I can’t wait to learn more about these different kinds of worlds, kingdoms, and heroes in the upcoming stories. In the meantime I will await for these seasons two and three Crunchyroll assures us are coming…They are coming right? You guys weren’t just blowing smoke up our asses in the last CRX convention, right?
