Kitty update:

Raleigh: We have done what diagnostics we can, and the results have been mostly inconclusive, somewhat positive, with only one negative confounding factor. That is a very mixed bag. We know that chemotherapy is likely to be ineffective. The only way to tell if the tumor is truly operable is exploratory surgery and removing anything that looks removable. If the vet answers a couple of follow-up questions positively and it is something we can afford, I would like to give him that chance. I don't love the debt that this will put us in, this is very stressful, but he is also a relatively young cat and otherwise good health. Incidentally, his eyes are doing much better. He is stepping over obstacles he cannot "see" with his whiskers and is jumping around with more confidence.

Dried Pickle Man: Smooch has historically been uncooperative but we changed the type of needle we used and did it in a different way and tonight he responded much more positively to the fluids. He was purring the whole time and didn't appear uncomfortable. If he continues to be cooperative like this, we should be able to get a little more meaningful time out of him provided we can get him to eat enough. It is possible fluids will help with his appetite. I monitor his quality of life extremely closely.

We don't have as much information as we would like about either of them, and that makes it harder to feel like we are choosing the option with the best chances of success. I do think we are doing as well as anyone could. Our veterinary team have been very direct and realistic about all of this, the conversations have not been awkward or uncomfortable. The vets at our home clinic care very, very much for our cats, and we love the vets very much as well. Even in a sad situation, it is a pleasure to work with them.

I cannot overstate my gratitude for everyone's support. I truly cannot. I wish that I had the energy and the ability to fully express to each one of you individually how much your words and material assistance have meant to us. It breaks my heart that I can't. Nothing is overlooked, nothing is unappreciated or taken for granted, everything is received with love, and that love is returned. I could not ask for better people to support us.

Thank you to those who have reached out with sympathy, advice, and pictures of your kitties to amuse and delight. It has made a confusing, frustrating, and very sad situation no less terrible, but much less lonely.

Knowing that my cats' presence on the internet has been meaningful to even a single one of you is something that I am grateful for, too. The idea that my trash tier shitposting about my crew of insufferable bastards has improved anybody's life is incredible to me, and wonderful, and frankly it is also deeply amusing. That I find love and meaning in Dried Pickle Man sneezing into my open mouth (today!) is funny enough on its own, knowing that you find it funny and meaningful when I tell you about it is actively hilarious.

i survived the movie premiere and i only had a few sightings which is very good but . i feel like i just got beat up. in an alleyway idk there is no other way to describe what i'm feeling rn. the movie was about just some guy who quits his lame cashier job and then struggles to find a job he actually likes (me). who loves to watch movies, who loves to go to a cinema and who prefers to sit in the last row and who wants to eat popcorn (me)(since this was an estonian film he was talking about THE exact cinema i go to btw)(there are so many other cinemas here). who wanted to go and study something creative but then just.. didn't (me). who does nothing all day long (me). who feels like every opportunity has already passed and that it's too late to really pick up anything now because it's just way too fucking embarrassing (me). who feels like he has nothing to offer (me). and who feels like he's just an interesting "hello" and nothing more (me).

extra (me) points for when he and his girlfriend went to hang out with her father and then after it he went "i think it's amazing how well you get along with your dad" . as if that isn't something i have said .. countless times before😭😭😭

this morning i had a whole organized essay-structured thought about my early childhood experience with themes of nostalgia in media that were obviously targeted towards adults who had stuff to be nostalgic over. anyways that led to me thinking about the crayon shin-chan movie Otona Teikoku no Gyakushuu and its portrayal of all consuming, destructive nostalgia for ~the good old days~. I also had an essay-thought about this but I put the movie on to refresh myself on it and it's Got Me. I know what nostalgia is now. I'm not even the right age for the era being shown in this movie but I Get It now. Baby Con was right to "put a pin in it" so to speak, yeah the themes are gonna hit me harder now that I'm an adult.

On this day, 78 years ago:

8th May 1945 marked the official end of the war in Europe, known as VE (Victory in Europe) Day. Newspaper and radio sources had all but confirmed the Allied triumph, and a ceasefire had been declared on the previous day. Wanting to celebrate, thousands of people flocked outside Buckingham Palace, calling out ‘We want the King!’

At around 3:11pm, King George VI, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth and the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, made the first of several balcony appearances that day (later to also be joined by Winston Churchill).

In this photo, The King is wearing the uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet. Princess Elizabeth is seen wearing the uniform of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (the ATS) which she had joined earlier in the year; the first woman in the Royal Family to serve as a full-time active member of the Armed Forces, albeit for only a few months. Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were both in blue.

This was also the day that the two princesses (along with other members of the Royal Household) disguised themselves amongst the crowds outside the Palace gates and cheered for their parents from the ground! ❤️

Are there any notable Presidential speeches you know of that were fully written or prepared but never delivered for some reason? (Such as Nixon’s failed moon landing speech for Apollo 11)

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any specific speeches similar to the undelivered speech prepared in case of a disaster on Apollo 11 (which is still haunting to read even with the knowledge that everybody made it home safely).

Obviously, most Presidents and Presidential candidates prepare victory and concession speeches, but we don't usually see the speech that wasn't needed. Once some time had passed, Hillary Clinton did read the victory speech that she would have given had she not lost the 2016 election to Trump. It was before he was President, but General Dwight D. Eisenhower had prepared a short statement in 1944 to deliver in case the Allied landings on D-Day had failed.

It's not quite the same thing, but I have a fascinating book called Strictly Personal and Confidential: The Letters That Harry Truman Never Mailed that is a collection of letters and notes that President Truman wrote while angry or annoyed but gave into his better judgment and held back on actually mailing. They are pretty entertaining.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, President Biden gave a speech in Normandy which was anti-Nazi and pro-democracy. So Republicans naturally regarded it as an attack on Trump. That tells us a lot about how MAGA identifies itself politically.

President Biden commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a traditional American speech about the civic values this country has taken from that event: Democracy is good, fascism is bad, allies are necessary, etc. [ ... ] Breitbart’s Joel Pollak complains that Biden’s speech was “a veiled attack on his domestic political opposition in the upcoming election.” Erick Erickson moans, “I don’t think it was appropriate for Biden to turn the remembrance of D-Day into a political attack on his opponent.” It is true that some media outlets interpreted Biden’s remarks as an attack on Trump. But the speech didn’t mention Trump. Nor did it refer to him obliquely. What it did was denounce a series of ideas that Trump does not claim to believe. [ ... ] All Biden’s rhetoric is totally standard fare from postwar American presidents. This is a bit like how every gauzy Super Bowl commercial in the Trump era about how people should be nice to each other came across as a subtle attack on Trump. When the leader of your party opposes your country’s basic values and human decency, giving a speech touting those values without sounding partisan becomes impossible.

Trump is clearly against human decency. So his supporters are going to claim that any speech extolling such virtues is therefore anti-Trump.

Trump fans apparently think the solution is to stop presidents from giving overseas speeches touting American values. Maybe the solution is to nominate a Republican presidential candidate who’s not an authoritarian criminal?
