Some points:
the tech in Baron Strucker's Hydra base is largely original. (The faceplate of the Ultron suit is either the same or very similar to the one seen beside the Hydra guns that Steve discovered in A1. Arnim Zola was the one who invented AI and mecha suits; not Tony.) The reason that tech looks exactly like Tony's creations is because... Tony and Hydra think the same way.
Baron Strucker was doing exactly what Tony is doing: creating an AI using the Mind Stone, to then create a Project Ultron under the AI's control to 'save' the world (but Hydra would probably call it Zola 2.0 or similar; only the name Ultron was Tony's).
When Ultron wanted to find a place with tech just like Stark Tower... he fled to Baron Strucker's base. The fact that that tech was still there for him to use is proof that Tony didn't tell the Avengers about it. If he had, they would have confiscated it all, and Ultron would've had nowhere to run.
Ultron's first move was to murder Baron Strucker, while he was in custody (having got the location of vibranium out of him; like father like son). Had he lived, Strucker would've been able to tell the Avengers what Tony's baby was planning... because it's exactly what Hydra would do.
Tony sees he and Hydra have exactly the same methodology and goal and instead of thinking about the implications of that his only response is 'great now I get to do Ultron.'
And he knows it's wrong because he goes out of his way to keep it a secret from everyone but Bruce Banner, whose help he needs. (Which he gets by emotionally manipulating him, playing the friendship card... which is kind of sad when you consider Bruce's backstory. IIRC Bruce is the only one Tony tells about the tech in Strucker's base.)
The Avengers are stumped as to where Ultron has gone when Tony really should've been able to guess... if he had bothered to share with the group. Think how much better the outcome would've been if he had told them!
Even after Ultron tries to kill everyone on the planet, and despite pretending to admit he was wrong, Tony keeps thinking his and Hydra's idea was fine. As proven by the above 👆 and by the fact that he made E.D.I.T.H. so he could keep doing Insight 2.0 and being a disastrous mass-murdering egomaniac even after he was dead. Just like Arnim Zola too, now I think about it.
His own future-wife Pepper compares Tony's company dealings with the military-industrial complex to NASA's employment of Wernher Von Braun, the SS Officer.
Bucky wasn't brainwashed, he was mind-controlled. (There's an argument to be made that he was also brainwashed... but it didn't take; it wasn't brainwashing that made him do what TWS did. As shown in CATWS, Hydra trying to reason with him to do as he's told didn't work -- as it would on a brainwashed person. They had to use full blown mind-control.) Sidenote: Clint Barton tried to kill Tony himself while he was mind-controlled, but was welcomed onto the same team as him within a day, without any drama!
OH MY GOD CAN WE TALK ABOUT TONY STARK JUST STRAIGHT UP SPEWING HYDRA RHETORIC IN ENDGAME
#antiendgame#antitony#bucky meta#mcu's serial crime of protagonist-centered-morality means it really would take almost nothing to make tony a full blown villain#he doesn't need to be an armband-wearing signed member of hydra when all his thinking is already authoritarian anyway#my hc about the stark's deaths is that he was killed during an internal hydra power struggle#(specifically for stealing the winter soldier serum and trying to make off w/ it for his own monetary ends)#I still maintain that it was OOC for tony to vote pro-accords when the World Security Council (a 'global government oversight' committee?)#...sent that nuke to manhattan he's always whining about AND signed off on project insight which was (also) going to target tony#(in fact THEY insisted insight was expedited when pierce framed fury while fury was trying to delay it / whistleblow)#tony has been consistently distrusting / dismissive of authority / told the senate they couldn't have his tech etc. in IM2#and in IM3 the vice-potus turned out to be AIM (which had PEPPER kidnapped and experimented on) government = NOT TRUSTWORTHY#but typical mcu write themselves into a corner and go 'welp guess we'll ignore that to puppet characters where feige wants them' 🤷♀️#the only reason I can't buy hydra trusting tony in their org is the same reason 'SHIELD' gave for not wanting him on the avengers:#because he's an unreliable narcissist; not a team player#there's a reason RDJ has been cast as doom and it's not because he was playing a NiceGuy™ when he was tony#my meta#the fact that a tony post has a bitcoin-selling bot in the replies = SAYS EVERYTHING#“long post”#mcu meta#mcu critical#mcu salt#tony meta

Why I think Miko Nakadai is arguably the best human character in TFP
Don't misunderstand, I know Miko was handled haphazardly throughout the series' run. That said, aside from her skipping off into the battlefield, she was actually a great character - and, in my personal opinion, the actual audience surrogate character in TFP.
Now, let me explain.
Although Miko's backstory is told and not shown - a rich daughter who had everything she could ever want, up to and including two pure-breed cats and piano lessons from age three onwards (which, coincidentally, tells us she's brainy despite her antics) - much can be inferred from what snippets of her past we get, along with her interactions with the Autobots. For one, she obviously can't stand most adult supervision, which is likely because of a few things. For one, back home in Japan, Miko would have had to be proper and polite, always restrained, and had to do what she was told. While this is normal (to an extent) in the West, in the East this is etiquette that needs to be obeyed, especially if you're as well off as she is; her actions, specifically in Japan, will reflect on her parents, but to a far lesser extent in America. Thus, when presented with the freedoms of the USA, Miko not only jumps at the chance for an exchange program that will give her the mobility she craves, she also chooses the place that has the least amount of glamor. By extension of choosing to settle in Jasper, Miko's also displaying two other traits: she's not afraid of going to a place vastly different from her home, and she isn't disgusted by a small town with very little monetary value to it.
Secondly, Miko's disregard for authority from adults but deference to the 'Bots teases us with an insecurity - namely, an insecurity that no adult ever gives her a chance to make her own decisions.
Just think about it: All the times Miko's blown off the human adults, it's when they've tried to decide her life for her. Miko has, from what we can see, had her whole life dictated, up to and including those piano lessons. She may be a prodigy at almost everything, but her preferred instrument is the guitar - and yet, she wasn't given lessons in that from the time she was a toddler. Therefore, she feels confined and controlled by the authority of her elders. And so, while Miko may be able to sway Bulkhead into getting her out of detention and consistently slip past the watchful eyes of the 'Bots, it's out of a desperate motivation to control her own life. Now, she does hold too much interest in the battles and getting to watch them, but wouldn't you have that same eagerness if Gundams or Jaegers came to life before your eyes? Yes, she knows their lives are in danger, that they couldn't come home, but there's still a fantastical element to all of this about the Autobots. And it remains so because while she loves them all, Bulkhead is the only one who, while giving her life advice and trying to keep her in check/alive, lets her make her own decisions and take control of her life and her actions.
And that's why she keeps going to the field. That's why she only listens to the reprimands with half an ear and why she recovers so fast from Optimus' near death experiences, as well as Raf's close call with death.
And that's why Miko's world shatters when Bulkhead is left in a half-dead coma from his fight with Hardshell. Because the one person in the universe who gave her freedom and care without deciding her life for her was not just seriously injured, but possibly on death's door.
That's why Miko runs around without a care until the S2 episode "Hurt": because she wants autonomy to decide her life, even if it's stupid choices that could get her killed.
And after "Hurt", we see a new Miko. Yes, she remains gung-ho and fierce, but she stops running onto the battlefield. She takes less enjoyment from the War. Because now, with the reality of war fresh in her mind, she knows the risks and the stakes involved, and she will never take that or her friends for granted anymore. This is further proved when Miko 'sneaks' along for "Chain of Command", but with a twist: she asks Wheeljack if she can come along - and if memory serves, this is the first mission Bulkhead's been on with herself present since the events before "Hurt". Clearly, Miko is still worried about losing Bulkhead - only, this time, she values the words of the 'Bots, and now seeks permission to join a mission, though she wisely asks Wheeljack for this blessing.
This is the beautiful part of her arc, crowned by her battle with Starscream and his Seekers (which is also just straight up awesome.) When she's kicked the afts of everyone, and Starscream tries to intimidate her with his usual "I killed Cliffjumper" speech, Miko's response is this calm, slightly rough, retort:
"Big whoop. I snuffed Hardshell."
In this moment, Miko Nakadai is shown to have grown from an excitable child into an unyielding, but mature, adult warrior. She no longer treats the War and the 'Bots like a game, or a release. She treats them as her friends who she will gladly risk her own life for.
And that, in my opinion, makes her the best human protagonist in all of Transformers: Prime, and Transformers media in general.
As for what I said earlier about her being the true audience surrogate, be honest with yourselves: If any of us were given the chance to meet the Autobots, wouldn't you be just as irrepressible as Miko, as eager to help as she was, and tempted to go to the battlefield to see the action/make sure your 'Bot wasn't going to die? That's what I mean when I say she's the audience surrogate - Miko acts like we would, and learns as we would about the War and the 'Bots if we suddenly came across them.
That's my two cents on Miko, and why she's the human character I respect the most in Transformers...probably of all time. If you liked it, I'm glad; Miko deserves better, and I hope I explained why well.
Til next time, folks!

Thanks for the request babes!! My first Aaron fic ever, so hopefully it's not too bad for a first 🥺 I hope this is to your liking ❤️
Warning(s): gn!reader, established relationship, talks of traffic accident, mentions of injuries, protective hotch, mean words (hotch is just worried abt you ok??)
This blurb was written as a part of the "Zara's Birthday Bash and Road to 1K" celebration.
Zara's Birthday Bash and Road to 1K Masterlist / Criminal Minds Masterlist
You heard him before you even laid eyes upon him.
Amidst the beeping machines and the moderate ruckus of the emergency room, Aaron's voice penetrated the air like a sword. The authority dripped like lava from his tone as he badgered Derek for your whereabouts, and before you could shuffle out of the hospital bed that had been your safe haven for the past hour, the cubical curtain surrounding you was suddenly yanked open.
Your movements ceased once you locked eyes with a frowning Aaron Hotchner.
"Hey—"
"Are you insane?"
You looked at him dumbfoundedly.
"Do you have a death wish? Is that it? Or are you just stupid?"
A few feet behind him, you could see Derek and Emily exchanging silent looks between the two of them. Everyone knew that Aaron was notorious for being frigid, and he had a strong impartiality when it came to any of his team members doing something impetuous on the field, but the words seeping out of Aaron's mouth at that moment sounded overtly harsh to those who knew him.
"Hotch—" Derek took a step forward, trying to come to your defense, "—it's not (Y/N)'s fault."
"I'm not talking to you." Aaron's response was cutting and final. It baffled Derek enough for him to trace his step back.
"What's wrong with you?" you asked once the shock dissipated, returning your voice to its rightful owner once more. "Why are you being like this?"
"Me? You're asking me? I should be the one asking you."
Your eyebrows pulled together in confusion. "We were chasing the UnSub—"
"You went rogue," he cut you off. "Morgan told me everything. There's no point in denying it."
Derek raised his arms in surrender when your stare of betrayal slid his way. "Fine. I'm sorry I grabbed a random civilian's bike and crashed it against the UnSub's car. You don't have to worry about paying anything back, I'll figure something out."
"Is that what you think this is about?" Aaron pinched the bridge of his nose. "I could care less about monetary compensations. We can deal with that later. You could've been killed, don't you understand?"
It was his last admission that finally made the pieces in your head click into place. Beneath the anger inside Aaron's words was actually a hidden anxiety ready to break free. He was worried about you, even if he was showing it in the least hospitable way possible.
Your relationship with Aaron was young; green around the edges and blooming every single day like tulips in spring. Nobody else in the world knew about it yet, and the two of you wanted to keep it that way. At least, that was what you agreed upon after having that lengthy discussion following your first official date.
And yet, none of that mattered when your fingers opted to reach out for Aaron's hand. You pretended not to notice the gasp that Emily let out as you urged your boyfriend to look into your eyes.
"I know you're worried, but I'm fine. I'm right here with you, and I'm okay." Aaron's shoulders physically collapsed at your reassurance. Every other noise in the hospital seemed to drown out in the aftermath. "The doctor's gonna clear me in no time, trust me."
"It still doesn't erase the fact that what you did was reckless." Aaron stepped closer towards the bed, overcrowding your senses as his thumb swept over your left eyebrow, just below the wound you had obtained from the crash. "Does it hurt?"
You shook your head no. The injury to your head was relatively minor. Your arm, on the other hand, was sustaining a quite sizable gash from your collision with the car.
Aaron's eyes followed your gaze that had meandered towards the gauze covering your arm. "How many stitches?"
Reluctantly, you answered, "Seven."
You heard his sharp breath before he turned around to face Derek. "Where's the UnSub now?"
Derek jerked his head to the right, where you reckoned the UnSub was being treated for their own injuries from the crash. The words of protest died in your throat as Aaron began to saunter to the other end of the ER with Derek hot on his heels.
With the two men's departure, Emily was the only one who remained.
"So—" she smiled knowingly, leaning against the foot of your bed, "—you and Hotch? When did that happen?"
You slammed your head back on the pillow, muffling your groan with your uninjured arm. "Shut up."

He tells you that you’re insatiable. He just can’t get enough of you. You’re the most perfect girl ever—he can’t spend a moment apart from you.
But that doesn’t really explain your sugar daddy’s absurd rules.
He’s strict about you not spending time with other men. He hates seeing what’s his in the hands or presence of others. It was hot at first. But you’ve grown tired of Johnny’s possessiveness. He seems crazy about you, and as much as you enjoy the attention, you swear you cannot breathe.
“Fuck, princess, you look so good,” he grunts, groping your tits. They sit in the fabric of the expensive lingerie he bought you for tonight.
As you lay in his large bed, you feel helpless. Part of you regrets the arrangement, even though you have no monetary issues anymore.
You’ve gone from making Ramen daily and barely paying rent to eating expensive food every meal and living in a penthouse. You know you shouldn’t complain, but the idea of a man funding your every want and need makes you shudder.
“I just can’t get enough of you,” Johnny says. You two aren’t very far off in age, but there is a noticeable difference in power. He could do anything to you—but what can you do to him? Not much; just showing him your body and spending every waking minute with him. “I love it when you touch me, Daddy.” Your words are forced out of you as he plunges his fingers into your used pussy. He’s fucked you twice already, yet Johnny is still hard. It’s both sexy and frustrating—you can never get a break. His libido is something you almost always think about.
“I know you do, baby. Fuck, this pussy is so messy,” he groans, dragging his digits against your sensitive inner walls. Johnny’s cum leaks out of you, and he stops his movements every now and then to smear his seed against your swollen lips. “‘M full of your cum, Daddy…”
There’s no denying that the wealthy man can make you feel euphoric. He’s skilled and gifted, making you wonder why he’s so loyal to you. You don’t think you give him much in return—just your body and soul, but in a world of riches, isn’t that the bare minimum?
“Yeah, you are. You’re leaking with it, princess. It’s so hot,” Johnny husks, and he’s tempted to pull his phone out and take a few pictures. But he knows he can’t—not while you’re still on your back, at least.
He brings you to the precipice of another orgasm, allowing you to teeter over the edge. Johnny doesn’t really care about giving permission when you want to come—he just has one rule.
You must thank him.
Not ‘thank you, Johnny’—no, certainly not. He hates it when you use his given name, especially since it breaks another rule of his. It’s ‘thank you, Daddy,’ whether you like it or not.
“Fuck—thank you, Daddy!” you whimper out, limbs twitching as you clench around his fingers. “You’re welcome, baby.” His cock throbs, desperate for you to touch it in any way.
Johnny thinks about taking your mouth next, just to give your pussy a bit of a break. He loves it when you choke on his dick, especially as he fucks your face.
You come down from your high and are hit with a pang of exhaustion and discomfort. You just need a few minutes, perhaps even a snack and a drink of water. You’d even go as far as to say that you don’t want to continue.
“Uhm… Johnny?” you question, wincing as you see that he’s stroking his dick. He pulls his fingers out of you and moves them to your clit, which is just as overwrought. Johnny’s jaw clenches at the sound of his name. “What?” he spits out, voice harsh. He gets like this quite often, and it’s made you grow scared of him just a bit.
“Do you– Do you think we can stop for tonight? Please?” you request. You would give him your best-begging eyes, but he’d probably just want to fuck you even more. “Stop? Why would we do that?” he laughs, pressing down harder on your nub.
You whimper from the friction. “I’m just tired. I mean, there’s always tomorrow, right?” you reason, looking up at Johnny with a sweet smile. He mirrors it before it drops from his face suddenly. “Hmm… I don’t think so. You don’t call the shots here, baby. I do.”
His words are as you predicted, but hearing them makes you want to cry.
Your sugar daddy continues his assault on your body, using you for pleasure. “And, besides,” he continues, taking your dominant hand and placing it on his cock. He makes you stroke him. “The night’s still young.”

I’m not saying that the Global South should immediately accept the principles of degrowth. We need to build more roads, buildings, schools, and hospitals. We also need to make more power plants and solar panels. But I think even when they grow, they should place more importance on satisfying basic needs rather than making things more profitable and competitive, which is how development has been imposed by the World Bank through structural adjustment programs [conditions on loans from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that require developing countries to encourage privatization and free trade]. We need different models of development in the Global South. There will be, of course, more usage of resources and energy in countries in the Global South, because right now they are under-consuming. Their development necessarily involves more consumption of energy and resources. That creates some pressure on planetary boundaries. So that means that the Global North needs to consciously degrow because it is over-developing, and has excessive production and consumption.
Slow down, do less: A Q&A with the author who introduced ‘degrowth’ to a mass audience

Thinking about how One Piece is a story that is especially well suited to the medium in which it’s being told.
One of the central pillars of One Piece’s philosophy is actions over words. It values exploring and viewing the world for yourself and coming to your own conclusions. This is simply not a story that would work in a written format, both because it deliberately disvalues words and barbecue it puts us as the audience on an equal playing field with the characters as they explore the world. No matter how much time and dedication an author puts into describing the world their characters live in, those characters will always have more information about the world that we do because they can see it plainly for themselves without having to wait for each building to be described to them. An author in a written format controls the flow of information and can keep the setting as vague or detailed as they like to suit their needs. In a visual medium, there’s much less (albeit not none) room to hide.
And yet, this story also wouldn’t (and I expect won’t) work in a more conventional visual format like plays or movies. Both are too short to do the sheer scale of the story justice and too caught up in the limitations of reality. Yes, we can see people do fantastical things in these mediums but there is always a disconnect any time special effects have to be used as well as monetary concerns that will inevitably hinder a storytellers freedom and ability to tell the story as they wish. George R.R. Martin can write thousands upon thousands of people into being as he describes epic battles and country-wide conflicts but HBO has to actually find and pay all those thousands of people to make that happen on-screen. Which usually means it dosen’t.
One Piece has to be told as a manga or animated series. They’re the only mediums that can cater to this kind of cartoon-y fantastical world and story Oda has told with them.

Why Doflamingo Expecting Rosinante To Die For Him Is Not Far Fetched For An European Post WW2 Sibling
For some background, the Donquixote brothers are both, if they were to live in our world, Spanish.
Even if I'm not from Spain, I'm still European, and boy, the generations before me (especially the younger siblings) had it fucked up. It had me raising my eyebrows because... Fuck that.
I remember when I first watched Doflamingo wanting Rosinante to give his life for him being surprised and shocked, since the author is Japanese, and in Japanese culture, it's the older brother protecting the younger brother. I thought despite their "foreign" surname, the Japanese brotherhood culture would prevail, as we've up until this point seen many One Piece siblings where the older ones always protect the younger ones.
Here is an explanation why the Donquixote Brothers were different (if we don't simply follow that Doflamingo is a selfish asshole bcs what kind of brother, regardless of being older or not, wants his other sibling to die?)
In Europe, post WW2, it was COMPLETELY NORMAL for the older siblings to get everything. The European parents, in fact, favoured the older sibling. And by EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING.
The house the parents owned, it is EXPECTED of the younger sibling to GIVE UP their share of the house and give it all to the older sibling. The younger sibling is expected to give everything up to their older sibling and then not say a word and be grateful.
I wish I was joking. This shit HAPPENED. So many of the elderly I know who had an older sibling gave their part of inheritance all to the older sibling.
And they are to expect nothing back. No monetary compensation, no right to even stay at that house anymore. NOTHING.
They were expected to sacrifice everything for their older sibling. Taking care of the older sibling's kids? Yep. Helping their older sibling with homework so the older sibling can get the higher grades even if that means the younger sibling gets lower scores? Yep.
I'm pretty sure it worked the same in Spain post WW2. It's because the oldest brother is the patriarch, the heir, the breadwinner. The younger sibling was not coddled, or treated softly. In fact, parents were more unforgiving toward the younger sibling.
It probably happened in Japan, as well, maybe, at one point, and Oda based it on that. But I think he mostly based it on the European sibling society post WW2.
It could be that even Mariejois raises the younger sibling to be submissive to the older one, regardless of both being Celestial Dragons...
So, yeah, except Doflamingo being completely selfish (which is 99% of the reason he expects Rosinante to give up his life for him) this is another real-life theme that could have been an inspiration for Oda.
In short, it's fucked up. It breaks my heart, because as kids, Doflamingo always made sure Rosinante ate. He was the leader, but he took care of his little brother.
Doflamingo puts his own self-preservation first and foremost, unfortunately, unlike Ace & Sabo for Luffy. Doflamingo included Rosinante in his preservation until he realised his brother wasn't "ride or die" for him as Doflamingo probably was for him.
He even says "My sweet little brother finally shows me his teeth." and I think he didn't want that to happen - it did hurt him. The younger sibling isn't supposed to rebel against the older one. They're supposed to be a team. Sure, Rosinante had to give up everything for Doflamingo, but Doflamingo would pay it back in his own way, I think.
For example, take IRL situation, if Rosinante gave up his share of the house, Doflamingo wouldn't kick Rosinante out of Rosinante's part. Sure, Doflamingo is the official owner, but he'd give his brother his share and let him live there. But that share will never be Rosinante's, unfortunately. He's a guest in his own house and needs to act properly unless he wants to get kicked out. It's messed up. The older brother has too much control over the younger brother's life that way, even if the older brother may not see it as such.
It's just tragic on both ends in the end.

“About a decade ago, I ventured my opinion that the adult multitudes queueing for superhero movies were potentially an indicator of emotional arrest, which could have worrying political and social implications. Since at that time Brexit, Donald Trump and fascist populism hadn’t happened yet, my evidently crazy diatribe was largely met with outrage from the fan community, some of whom angrily demanded I be extradited to the US and made to stand trial for my crimes against superhumanity – which I felt didn’t necessarily disprove my allegations.
Ten years on, let me make my position clear: I believe that fandom is a wonderful and vital organ of contemporary culture, without which that culture ultimately stagnates, atrophies and dies. At the same time, I’m sure that fandom is sometimes a grotesque blight that poisons the society surrounding it with its mean-spirited obsessions and ridiculous, unearned sense of entitlement. Perhaps this statement still requires some breaking down.
(…)
Quite liking comics, aged 14 I thus became a comics fan with my discovery of British fandom, which was then still gummy-eyed and fresh out of the egg. The first convention I attended in London, in the basement rooms of a Southampton Row hotel in 1969, was tiny and inspiring. The attenders barely totalled a three-digit number, almost all of them some few years short of legal drinking age. The comics companies, having no monetary interest in a handful of penniless teenagers, went blissfully unrepresented, and the only industry celebrity that I recall was the sublime and sweetly unassuming genius Frank Bellamy, passing Dan Dare or Garth originals around, appearing wonderstruck that anyone had heard of him. The only thing uniting the assembly was its passion for an undervalued storytelling medium and, for the record, the consensus verdict of the gathered 15-year-old cognoscenti was that costumed musclemen were the main obstacle preventing adult audiences from taking comics seriously.
Of that hardly-a-hundred schoolkids, office boys and junior librarians, the great majority were actively involved in their pursuit, publishing or contributing to a variety of – for the most part – poorly duplicated fanzines, or else going on to work professionally in the field, such as Kevin O’Neill, Steve Moore, Steve Parkhouse or Jim Baikie, all of whom were downstairs at the Waverley hotel that weekend, keen to elevate the medium that they loved, rather than passively complain about whichever title or creator had particularly let them down that month. Of course, this was the 1960s and the same amateur energy seemed to be everywhere, spawning an underground press, Arts Lab publications and a messy, marvellous array of poetry or music fanzines that were the material fabric of that era’s counterculture; flimsy pamphlets as important and innovative today as they were then, although considerably more expensive, trust me.
Soon thereafter, caught up in the rush of adolescent life, I drifted out of touch with comic books and their attendant fandom, only returning eight years later when I was commencing work as a professional in that fondly remembered field, to find it greatly altered. Bigger, more commercial, and although there were still interesting fanzines and some fine, committed people, I detected the beginnings of a tendency to fetishise a work’s creator rather than simply appreciate the work itself, as if artists and writers were themselves part of the costumed entertainment. Never having sought a pop celebrity relationship with readers, I withdrew by stages from the social side of comics, acquiring my standing as a furious, unfathomable hermit in the process. And when I looked back, after an internet and some few decades, fandom was a very different animal.
An older animal for one thing, with a median age in its late 40s, fed, presumably, by a nostalgia that its energetic predecessor was too young to suffer from. And while the vulgar comic story was originally proffered solely to the working classes, soaring retail prices had precluded any audience save the more affluent; had gentrified a previously bustling and lively cultural slum neighbourhood. This boost in fandom’s age and status possibly explains its current sense of privilege, its tendency to carp and cavil rather than contribute or create. I speak only of comics fandom here, but have gained the impression that this reflexive belligerence – most usually from middle-aged white male conservatives – is now a part of many fan communities. My 14-year-old grandson tells me older Pokémon aficionados can display the same febrile disgruntlement. Is this a case of those unwilling to outgrow childhood enthusiasms, possibly because these anchor them to happier and less complex times, who now feel they should be sole arbiters of their pursuit?
There are, of course, entirely benign fandoms, networks of cooperative individuals who quite like the same thing, can chat with others sharing the same pastime and, importantly, provide support for one another in difficult times. These healthy subcultures, however, are less likely to impact on society in the same way that the more strident and presumptuous fandoms have managed. Unnervingly rapidly, our culture has become a fan-based landscape that the rest of us are merely living in. Our entertainments may be cancelled prematurely through an adverse fan reaction, and we may endure largely misogynist crusades such as Gamergate or Comicsgate from those who think “gate” means “conspiracy”, and that Nixon’s disgrace was predicated on a plot involving water, but this is hardly the full extent to which fan attitudes have toxified the world surrounding us, most obviously in our politics.
Elections that decide the fate of millions are conducted in an atmosphere more suited to evictions on I’m a Celebrity …, in which contestants who are insufficiently amusing are removed from office. Saleability, not substance, is the issue. Those who vote for Donald Trump or Boris Johnson seem less moved by policy or prior accomplishment than by how much they’ve enjoyed the performances on The Apprentice or Have I Got News for You. And throughout the UK, we’re now familiar with what a Stephen Yaxley-Lennon fan convention looks like.
An enthusiasm that is fertile and productive can enrich life and society, just as displacing personal frustrations into venomous tirades about your boyhood hobby can devalue them. Quite liking something is OK. You don’t need the machete or the megaphone.
Candidly, for my part, readers would have always been more than sufficient.”

On the World Health Organization's list of 10 chemicals of major public health concern, lead is a familiar villain. The toxic metal contaminates air, soil, water and food, and builds up inside bodies over time. Its most widely publicized health impact is neurological damage in children, often measured in the loss of intelligence quotient (IQ) points. But lead's pernicious effects don't stop in childhood nor at the brain. According to a new study in the journal Lancet Planetary Health, an estimated 5.455 million adults worldwide died in 2019 from cardiovascular disease (CVD) attributable to lead exposure — a toll more than six times higher than a previous estimate. The study goes on to provide what its authors say are the first monetary estimates of the total global cost of these lead-attributable deaths, along with the magnitude and cost of IQ loss in children under 5 years old. For 2019 alone, the study puts the combined toll of cognitive damage and CVD mortality at $6 trillion (based on projected loss of future income and an economic measure known as value of statistical life), with the greatest burden falling on low- and middle-income countries.

Fanfiction and Profit
Hello loves~ I’ve seen this pop up now and then, about fanfiction and commissions, profit and whether we can pay someone to write the fic we want to read. Unfortunately, I have to be the bearer of bad news:
You absolutely, unequivocally, cannot and should not pay or be paid for fanfiction.
Why not? Well, let’s go over this topic with a look at what fan works are, how we can use them, and where these rules came from.
Why can’t we profit from our hard work? Is this fair?
There are a lot of reasons, and I want to start off with saying this is not about whether it is fair or right, it is a simple statement of the rules by which our hobby, our passion, is permitted to live and thrive. The law does not consider fanfiction to be transformative enough to be legal to profit from, and you will find that AO3 itself explicitly does not allow payment, commissions, or any direct payment sites to be linked on the platform.
I’ll say that one again - it is fully against AO3’s Terms and Conditions to advertise any paid work on the website. You will be warned by moderators if you’re found doing this, and may risk entirely losing your account.
It’s essentially legally complex. The only reason we are allowed to write and share fanfiction at all is because it is non profit. We can’t be sued for making money from someone else’s intellectual properties if we’re not making any money from it.
Why are fan art, songs, and other mediums allowed to profit when we can’t?
This is another piece of nuance for you, which not everyone will agree with. Art is considered to be more transformative, and is generally viewed differently as a medium.
But I will also say here we can look at it purely from a business angle, the legal side that the IP rights holder will be viewing it from too: Fan art can often attract people in to a fandom, to find out who this interesting character is or what the source of the art was. It adds profit to the original creator by bringing new fans to the table.
Fanfiction, on the other hand, is almost exclusively read by people who have already consumed the original media and are looking for new stories. I would argue it is exceptionally rare for someone to read fic before they’ve engaged with the source material. Fic often relies on the reader knowing the characters and stories already, so we can shorthand the exposition and everyone understands what’s going on and why.
When did this become the rule?
The “Elders” of fanfiction will give you a thousand yard stare with this one, because it largely comes back to JRR Tolkien’s estate and Anne Rice. Both were very unhappy with fanfiction existing at all, and are the reason why you might well still see disclaimers at the top of some fics mentioning that all characters, worlds, etc belong to the original rights holders and the work is one of fanfiction that the author does not profit from in any way. Tolkien’s estate and Anne Rice both set legal challenges against fanfic writers, threatening the entire hobby and setting legal precedents at the end of it for what we can and cannot do. What we can do? Write transformative works, based on existing IPs, and share them for free with no profit or money exchanged at any point.
But what about exchanges?
You can offer to exchange fic for fic, or swap art and fanfic. This isn’t getting paid because you aren’t profiting from it, but if you want to encourage someone and be encouraged in return, that is a potential way to do it. So an artist might draw a scene, character or pairing that you love, whilst you write a fic for them. It’s swapping a gift for a gift in that way, and although you could assign monetary value to commissioned art, you aren’t actually exchanging money. It might seem like a bit of a loophole, but it is one that rights holders shouldn’t be able to be upset by really. I can’t see myself how a legal challenge could be raised for damages on that basis, so it should be safe. If you’re not an artist yourself but do want to see something specific from a writer, you could offer to commission art on their behalf in exchange for the fic. It’s imperfect, but in the end you’re supporting both an artist and a writer in that exchange, even if the writer is only gaining a product instead of money, as long as they're not selling it on again.
What if I want to commission someone to write something I want to read?
Well, unfortunately, if you want them to write fanfiction, that’s not possible. You may find some writers are willing to take on prompts, though! Tumblr can be a good one for that, as writers sometimes specify that their ask boxes are open for fic prompts that they might consider writing. You can also try approaching a writer who has written in a style you like and as if they would be willing to write a piece based on your idea or pairing, though you should double check what pairings and topics they’re comfortable writing first.
Isn’t there anything I can do with my writing skills?
Plenty of things! You can use fanfiction as a way to warm up into writing skills in general. Get some practice, feedback, and validation to know you’re on the right track. It’s a wonderful low pressure way to get a feel for fiction writing in general and work out what kinds of stories you’d like to tell.
In some cases, you might be able to take a fanfic you have written and rewrite it to become something original - this might need a lot of work in changing enough names and details for it to become removed from the IP that it was initially based on, but this is certainly something people have done in the past. Most famously, 50 Shades of Grey (my opinions of which are astronomically low for so many reasons, but this is not the place for those) began life as a Twilight fanfiction.
Writing original fiction will always have its own unique challenges, and is a different experience to fic. For one thing, you need to establish your setting and characters because your readers don’t know them yet. Another that many find tough is going through the writing process without any feedback from beta readers or getting kudos from published chapters. Then, of course, publishing is its own beast… But if you want to profit from writing, then you need to either have a paid role as a writer on a specific IP project, or you need to write your own works and look at getting them published (the main 3 options would be self pub, indie publishers, or trad pub - they all have their pros and cons for different things, so it’s something to do proper research on before committing to any one path).
I found someone offering paid fic, what should I do?
I recommend gently warning them. Not everyone is aware of the risks, so giving them a kind heads up is probably the best bet. You can even direct them to this post if you like, to save re-explaining it all. If they don’t listen, then unfortunately you may need to report their account to AO3 so the moderators there can give them a more formal warning that might be taken more seriously. I have no doubt that the AO3 mods will be able to explain it more clearly and concisely than I can, too.
I have taken payment for fic in the past, what should I do?
First, I'm not here to blame you. Not everyone knows the rules or history - that's why I'm here to share the explanation for anyone who didn't know~ But what you need to do now is immediately stop any offers to take commissions for fanfiction. Scrub your AO3 of any links to payment sites, and remove any reference to "commission" or "paid work" in your writing wherever it is shared. Clean everything up so you are safe from any legal repercussions, and you may need to refund any incomplete commissions. Take a look at the other ways you might be able to earn from your writing, or options for exchanges you might be happy with for writing something bespoke for someone else. We can't change what has already been done, but we can move forward when we know better so we can do better.
Conclusion? Where are we with fic and profit?
The bottom line is the same as the top - for the safety of our fandom communities, we must never accept or offer payment for fanfiction. Doing so not only risks the individual author, but the entire community as a whole. We might not agree with it, and that’s not the conversation I’m here to have, but this is the way things are. It’s not something that can be changed, so we should respect the playground we are in and take care not to end up having the whole place torn down. Fanfic writing is a hobby, and one that brings us a whole lot of community, joy, creativity, and a way to extend the love of a franchise far beyond the ending of the canon content. We get to create and play with all kinds of toys in the toybox in whatever ways we like - that’s special, and I feel we should respect and protect that.
So, we’ll end it here - go, have fun writing, build your skills and style, find and delight your readers, just keep in mind everything that got us here and everything in the future that we want to preserve~

Why is it the War Devil?
Obviously, I am fascinated by the concept of the War Devil. There is a way in which her presence in the story is uniquely Japanese. Since WWII, the question of how to process the Empire’s defeat has hung over Japanese society. On the conservative side, there is a long project to minimize the realities of the War, especially atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army. Alongside this, there is the concerted effort within the legislature to repeal Article 9 of the constitution, the article which forbids the Japanese government from raising an army. On the left, there is a desire for genuine reconciliation and strong support for article 9. However, the effort has not gained much of a foothold. Japan is, much like the United States, a strongly conservative country.
For example, when the historian Ienaga Saburo wrote his textbook “New Japanese History” for public schools in 1953, the government initially approved his manuscript, but when he resubmitted a revised version two years later, they demanded that 216 revisions be made. Revisions included minimizing the Rape of Nanking, adding a mention of public support for the Russo-Japanese war, etc. Straightforward government censorship of established historical fact.
Ienaga sued the government for damages arguing that he was protected by Article 21, the right to free speech. Note: his book was not a state standard. It was simply one of many textbooks available for use by schools. A district court ruled that the government’s demands didn’t constitute censorship, but did constitute an abuse of authority and granted monetary settlement. An appeal to the High court rejected the monetary settlement, and the Supreme Court upheld the appeal.
In other words, the Japanese Government was granted the right to dictate the facts of history “for the public good” in the words of the rulings. Realities of war were erased from the public consciousness with the intent to control the narrative around the Fallen Empire. And the state reasoning was a paternalistic appeal to the greater good of humanity. If this reminds you of Makima’s plan in part one, I am sure that is not a coincidence.
This is a metaphor that I think was broadly missed by the international audience. The idea that War should be forgotten for the sake of humanity, this is the ideology behind historical revisionism. Fujimoto is looking directly at the way that political power in Japan is used to manipulate public understanding of history. Pieces of the past are erased, eaten, and forgotten.
This is why I don’t lend much credence to the idea that Chainsaw Man actually modifies the fabric of the universe somehow when he eats a devil. It is not that the world changes, it is that people forget about it. It’s not that our forgotten sixth sense was deleted. We just forgot it used to exist. It disappeared, perhaps as a part of Chainsaw Man’s attack. And then we forgot.
The main reason I think of it this way is because of the parallel with historical revisionism. Right now in Florida the state government is attempting to erase the suffering of African slaves brought to America from the school curriculum. If they maintain this for three generations, no one in the state of Florida will know of this true part of history. It will be forgotten. Humanity in Florida will have forgotten a part of slavery. We don’t need supernatural mechanics to explain historical ignorance. This happens all the time.
Yoru describes this phenomenon in more detail: “War became a thing of books and movies.” Yoru became weakened as humanity became less afraid of war. Parts of the war that really happened are not gone, but have been consigned to unreality. They exist only at a distance. It is only one step further along this axis until they are completely forgotten, until they aren’t thought about at all.
This idea of forgetting War is directly relevant to the political conflicts around Article 9. This conflict is split as I mentioned, but the reality of the situation is more complex. During the occupation, the US Government directed the drafting of the new Japanese constitution. In a real sense, Japan was literally Americanized. The text of Article 9 reads:
Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.
In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
This is part of Chapter 2 in the Articles of the Japanese Constitution. Other chapters contain multiple articles. This is the only article in chapter 2 which is titled “Renunciation of War.” To date, Japan is the only country in the world to include a renunciation of war in its constitution.
Of course, Article 9 doesn’t exist out of the kindness of the Japanese people’s peace loving hearts. It exists because the US military thought that the Japanese people were so intrinsically bloodthirsty, that if they didn’t dismantle the empire and remove their ability to raise an army, there could never be peace.
That said, Japanese politicians were involved in the drafting of the constitution as well. Since the war began in China in 1928, a significant faction even among the hawkish types were exasperated with the boneheaded aggression. But the fascists had control of the Emperor, the key figurehead. Once that was lost, cooler heads who were open to the idea of a peaceful Japan stepped in.
So Article 9 starts with this complex identity. On the one hand, it is an imposition by the occupying force, on the other hand, it is a reconciliation within Japan around mistakes the nation made. This remains the case going forward. Because soon after the occupation ends, the Korean War begins.
America, having secured a foothold in the region, realizes that militarily neutering their nearest ally may have been a tactical mistake. But they also still don’t really trust the Japanese government. So they make a move. The US signs a controversial security-treaty with Japan that creates the “National Security Force” to act as a military police. Japanese conservatives then use this precedent to begin building a military under the premise of it being for “self defense.” Thus the JSDF, Japanese Self Defense Force, is born. This was all done with explicit American support.
The American’s didn’t want to team up with the JSDF per se. They wanted Japan to manufacture weapons to create a short supply line towards the Korean front. The creation of the JSDF gives the Japanese government permission to permit manufacturing of military machinery, which was originally taken to be forbidden by Article 9.
Since it’s founding, the JSDF has gradually crept further and further towards active military activity. The final line was crossed in the Iraq war. At the behest of George W. Bush, Prime Minister Koizumi approved a battalion of Japanese soldiers to act in conjunction with the US military for the invasion of Iraq.
This occurs in 2004, in the wake of the 90s. Japan re-enters war in a real way. At this point, article 9 is essentially window dressing on a country which has what amounts to a fully functional military force. But, the existence of article 9 creates a public perception of Japan as being removed from war, even as it actively participates.
You can see now why when Yoru appeared in chapter 98 I was immediately excited. The idea of the War Devil coming back is a stab at the powers that be trying to paper over their militaristic intentions with political rhetoric. Conservatives are currently moving to repeal article 9. This was one of Shinzo Abe’s major objectives. But he failed to achieve it.
So the struggle continues under the current leadership. And in that context, Fujimoto is placing War front and center. War that has been forgotten but will come back. War that, should she return to full power, will turn legions of young men into weapons.
It’s a subtle but also daring message. The debate plays out in politics but is notably absent from public discourse. Japan is different from American in that political conflict doesn’t dominate its media landscape. Generally speaking, the media is running cover for the government.
So to see someone go after this idea of forgotten war, of war coming back from a weakened state, and to highlight the latent threat it poses, is quite refreshing. Once again, Fujimoto manages to subtly weave a cogent political message into the threads of his story, not necessarily by trying to push a particular narrative, but simply by reflecting in his work the political realities he sees in his society.

Dripping Poison
Author's note: Zaarius's debut in Space Marine Husbandry!
Summary: Zaarius has fun messing with a planet and a beleaguered Lamenter, without the Lamenter knowing that he's behind some of his Suffering. Then he lands on Ancient Terra and has some troubles with his poison. And some rude Scout Apothecary tackles him to the floor and tapes jars to his hands. Rude. At least he gets his issue fixed.
Warnings: Chaos Space Marines- Variant Slaneshi Emperor's Child. Poison, uh, let me know if I need to add more.

Oh, to be a member of a warband of brothers, in service to the Chaos God of Excess has been truly a journey of the greatest highs and the worst of the lows he's ever felt in his life. He's from one of the war bands of Emperor's Children who don't meet with Father often, not as Powerful or Important as some of the other warbands, but they make do and have a couple of Daemon Worlds that they run, and he's just finished a mission to help seed more Cultists for the God of Excess.
It's fun to see how the pathetic mortals will crumple under his claws. How the poison gift that he was given, watered down, to nearly be ineffective becomes such a sought-after drug to the base line humans and Xenos alike. He's got a lot of resources- in terms of monetary, intelligence, and other things. Still, he's made sure to keep an eye on his people, after all, one never knows when one will be attacked- and someone will try to take more than they should, and he's far more than any can handle.
Still, stringing along that one particularly stupid Planetary Governor, with honeyed wine dripped with just the smallest touch of the poison that he drips from his claws. The poison of Carnality. He watches with a smirk underneath his helmet as he watches the guests at this part start to be affected by the Poison of Carnality, more than a few people will be indulging in Excessive Lust and Carnality in a way that will empower Slanesh.
It's so fun to drip that particular poison into the goblets of the Nobility and Highest politicians. As it's so delightful to see the way the fall out of such a thing happens. Blackmail, intrigue, scandals and other salacious delights. He's been sure to not poison the goblet of the Loyalist Marine. He's the sole one on this wretched planet, who's been fighting the incursion of those dreadful Orks, no sense of style or beauty, and they weren't a good source of material for worship and empowerment for Slaneesh.
Honestly watching the Golden Loyalist suffer and fight has been such a delightful symphony of Excess emotions. Watching Haggo? Haggie? Huggo? Hagiel? Hagiel He things, suffer and fight and try his bet to succeed as been very amusing for Zaarius, at turns he's whispered things to those around him to either help or hinder the younger Marine, and it very much depended on his mood and how entertaining Hagiel has been.
Finding out to his utter shocked delight that the golden marine is of Blood Angel stock, and not an Imperial Fist or one of their shout-y menaces had him doubled over cackling with laughter. This poor bastard has such bad luck it might be a curse. Also, helping the screeching member of the Pomposity- wait no Ecclisarchy evade Hagiel long enough to cause More Drama- which he so loves to watch and grin maniacally as he watches the other suffer. Such a delightful symphony of emotions in the populace and in the younger cousin.
Also, he'd been getting almost bored, until the fall out of the drops of Carnality bloomed beautifully with the scandals and how the base lines screeched and yowled and fought amongst each other, ignoring the threat that was more important as he whispered and inflamed a few people here and there and why, somehow, for some reason the entire planet erupted into civil war! Oh, what a marvelous thing to happen! What an ecstatic joke. Oh- his sides haven't hurt like that from laughing in centuries. That poor little Blood Angel Successor Chapter Space Marine, running around, ragged, hungry, and bewildered at how little sense Base Line humans make.
He does pout and sulk a little that the Loyalist had managed pull things together just enough that the inspection team didn't arrive to complete, and utter Chaos or chaos and disaster. Urgh. Ultramarines. So boring and dull. He's getting off this miserable planet. He's had his fill of fun, and his vacation time is over, time to go back to doing really work and more Chaos. Several months later he's fighting and something explodes, and he blinks, waking up and looking around with a frown of confusion as his eyebrows wrinkle as he doesn't recognize the planet that he's on.
After all, the planet he was on before was a swamp, and this is a forest. How strange, is he in a dream? An Illusion? Or something else? He's waiting to reform his body back into being in the materium, it's taking far longer than it should as he wanders from one part of the forest to another as he takes in the scenery. The plants are nice, and while he can taste the scent of pollution it's almost a pleasure world quality to the vivid colors of the plants and animals, as well as the diversity of them. He stops as he hears a call and turns, greeting a few of his fellow Chaos Marines with a cautious, yet cheerful greeting as he follows these cousins he doesn't know further in, to a Base.
Slowly he gets drip fed information, on where and when he is now, and he explains where and when he is from. Learning about… these 'bonds' sounds definingly like the Warp is up to Something strange, and potentially very suspicious. After all, why would the Warp tie a lowly base line human to a Space Marine? Why did it effect all kind of Space Marines? From Loyalist to Chaos, no chapter was safe, nor indeed, was any future Era safe from having Space Marines snatched from their original time to the here and now. Truly, what a strange and fascinating phenomenon. He's having quite a fun time, until his claws start to drip poison, and he can't stop it.
So, he heads to the nearest Space Marine Clinic, it's one that is mostly run by Loyalists, but needs must. He waits in the lobby and greets the Apothecary who's going to treat him. Before the rude, and giant fucker slams him to the ground and straps empty jars to his hands. He protests that he's not a threat and gets growled at. At least the Salamanders are swift on their approach to get the hot headed little shit off of him.
When asked for reparations he'd like the rude brat to apologize, or have his time stuck within the base doubled. They hem and haw and speak with the brat-apothecary and he's told he's not going to get an apology, but the length of time for the younger Space Marine being unable to leave the base is what he'd requested. Honestly, it was more his pride was hurt, than actually being damaged.
A different loyalist Apothecary was able to help him out with his issue. Apparently, he'd need to milk the poison from his claws occasionally, otherwise it would build up and uncontrollably drip out of his claws and the… concentrated form of the poison is the deadliest form of it. At least, he sighs, he knows what was wrong and how to fix it, he'll pass the information on to his other brothers who have that particular blessing of Slaneesh. The poisons are weaker in this Ancient Version of Terra, but still dangerous. So fascinating, yet so strange how things are so different, and yet the same in some ways.

Seven Deadly Sins
Thanks for the tag, @the-golden-comet (here)!
I'll go with the cast of Supernova Initiative and What Lurks In The Hollow for this one!
Rules: which of your OCs would you assign to which of the seven deadly sins and why?
GREED
Jasper Astrophell (Supernova Initiative)
Jasper's the son of an intergalactic billionaire arms dealer, and is someone who not only was raised with the world on a silver platter but who was very much sheltered from their galaxy's true realities. He loved going to parties, buying the finest flying cars and spaceships, going on dates, etc - standard "rich spoiled playboy" stuff. But he also takes after his father's sense of business and is a brilliant inventor, being also incredibly intelligent when it comes to making brand deals and is pretty much a space opera version of the Wolf of Wall Street whenever he gets involved in the company's dealings.
Savvanah Hahn (What Lurks In The Hollow)
Savvy embodies the sin of "greed" in a non-monetary sense - she's not really interested in money and honestly hates people who waste it. She embodies greed because she is a very intense person who wants to have control over the spheres of her life she can control - because she feels that, if she loses that control, bad things could happen to her and those she loves. She is also very serious when it comes to "her stuff" be it her turf, her & her boyfriend's favorite arcade machine, or her seat at a concert, and is not at all afraid to get into brawls to "keep her territory" in a very troublemaker teen way.
WRATH
Vesper Foxx (Supernova Initiative)
Vesper's life ever since the day she lost everything as a child, was dictated by rage. Rage at the destruction of her homeland by foreigner invaders, rage at having to hopelessly watch her brother be tortured to death, rage at escaping and being too young to have her revenge just yet at the time. She left her younger sister and cousin behind to pursue revenge because no matter how much she tried and tried and tried to move on, that primal anger born of trauma would never leave her. She would never have peace unless her brother's killers suffered the same fate as he had. No matter how many lives she reaped on her wrathful path to achieve it. Full alien girl John Wick.
Liam Steele (What Lurks In The Hollow)
A troubled youth, Liam has a reputation for being an incredibly defiant, almost antisocial, teenager who gets into fights for the most trivial things. He's seen as a bully by kids who do not know him well and as a nuisance by any authority figures around him. But that's not what he really is - he's not a bully, he only gets into fights with people who provoke him or who try to hurt others (a.k.a. he beats up the ACTUAL bullies), and just has a short patience because no one other than Savvy ever tried to understand him, so he never bothered letting down his guard. Since he thought being vulnerable would only get him hurt, he embraced the "tough teen who listens to rock and spends the day at the arcade or skulking around town" facade to be left in peace.
GLUTTONY
Jack Tithus (Supernova Initiative)
Jack dictates his life in the pursuit of having more than what he had when he and his siblings were just street urchins on their crime-ridden birth moon. Even though so much time has passed and he's now a rich and renowned intergalactic thief, the wound of all the shame and toil they went through still haunts him. He wants all the fun, food, clothes, and adventures because deep down, he wants to prove to himself that he's more than what everyone once called a "filthy street rat." He's obsessive about being free to do whatever he wants and his incessant pursuit for more, and more, and MORE, is what drove him to continue the path of a thief in the first place - he's hungry for the opportunities he never had in the past, restless to never stop indulging himself in freedom and always keep having more and more adventures, because he fears that if he does stop, he'll prove his enemies right.
Christine Nespor (What Lurks In The Hollow)
A former wanderer who found solace in the solitude of the small town of Vinethorn Grove, Christine is a creative soul who, stifled by the toxic expectations of her shitty family, left her life behind to indulge her soul in who she really wants to be. She is hungry for adventure, for the freedom to express herself and feed her soul in beautiful sights, to see nature, see unique places, and generally indulge herself in being alive. To her, life is a wonderful buffet, and those who know how to make the most of it, are the happiest! She knows how to find the silver lining in any situation, even if others cannot.
LUST:
Kye Thalax (Supernova Initiative)
I considered putting him in the "Wrath" category, but then I realized that Kye - despite wanting bloody revenge for the death of his father and the pain they suffered in the past - is far too calculated and cold to be considered wrathful. He is bitter, but his emotions rarely get the better of him. Kye is known to take a deceitful and cunning approach to taking down his enemies, sometimes even resorting to seduction to destroy them. He uses those people's vices against them - if someone he wants to kill drinks too much, he poisons their drink; if they gamble, he poisons their cards; if they just want to have sex, he seduces them and poisons them in the safety of their chambers; if the person is obsessed with killing, he poisons the hilt of their weapons so the one who dies is the killer and not the would-be-victims.
Mrs. Draycott (What Lurks In The Hollow)
OKAY SO THE ONLY ANTAGONIST ON THIS LIST LET'S GO lmao.. Mrs. Draycott is a middle-aged woman, somewhere in her very late forties or early fifties, who is considered a very "upstanding citizen" in the small town of Vinethorn Grove. She's an active member of the local community and often uses her reputation to get what she wants. Mrs. Draycott (her name is Adelaide btw) is the embodiment of a Karen and takes a creepy liking to Dylan Millihan after he and his sister Amy move into town. A "lonely" widow drawn to his youthful (23M) looks and who all too soon becomes very stalkerish towards him- often paying them unwanted visits saying she "just wanted to drop by", or stopping by Dylan's jobs, or just generally following them around town, hoping he "becomes smitten with her too". At first, the siblings just tried to politely ignore her, but as she became more insistent and annoying, Dylan eventually snaps at her at a community event and tells her to leave him alone. Feeling spurned, Mrs. Draycott then showed her full aggressive personality and became a true Karen, trying to make the siblings' lives a living hell and turning the already wary townsfolk against them.
PRIDE:
Artemis Zreeth (Supernova Initiative)
Artemis is a very prideful and cocky young man. One of his fatal flaws is that he is often too stubborn to realize he is in the wrong and wants to do things his own way even if they eventually go wrong. A lot of why he clashes with Kye when they have to work together is that Artemis refused to consider Kye genuinely wanted to make amends and redeem their friendship.
Dylan Millihan (What Lurks In The Hollow)
Dylan has a strong personality and generally pushes people away rather than be friendly. He's also someone who isn't very approachable and generally wants to do his own thing, live his life and hates people who try to pry into his personal business. He is very bitter about the fact he had to give up his budding medical career - he was halfway through medical college when their toxic grandmother died leaving behind only MASSIVE GAMBLING DEBTS and regret - and some percentage of that resentment comes from the fact he hates the fact he was never able to fulfill his potential and got stuck as someone who in his point of view was only "half-good" - his self-esteem is kind of shitty, if you can't tell lol, and he hides it behind a layer of a harsh pride.
ENVY
Aleks Keldora (Supernova Initiative)
Not necessarily envy but Aleks suffers from severe social anxiety and thinks he's "never going to be good enough" so he's "better off pretending to be somebody" else like a social chameleon.
Erin Niemand (What Lurks In The Hollow)
Erin's a loner who holds some considerable resentment towards kids who are able to be popular - which she isn't able to do - and deep down also feels "lesser" than the kids who have full families, since her mother abandoned the family - which made Erin develop some serious trust and self-esteem issues.
SLOTH
Meridian Shardd (Supernova Initiative)
Not on purpose - but they can be overwhelmed by being given too many tasks and may panic and not do anything instead, or will be halfway through a task and get distracted by something else and ditch the task to do that something else instead.
Indigo "Indie" Lauriel (What Lurks In The Hollow)
She's a laidback hipster girl who rarely takes things seriously and has some serious procrastinating issues, and can be generally pretty lazy.

by Nan Jacques Zilberdik
The US has announced that it’s giving the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank additional humanitarian aid worth $336 million.
But in response to all the US support during the war (and prior), the Palestinian Authority (PA) is relentlessly demonizing the US as being the aggressor and mastermind behind Israel’s war against the Hamas and Hezbollah terror organizations, regardless of the fact that both terror organizations first attacked and continue to attack Israel and Israeli civilians.
Worse still, three days ago, PA leader Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesman also blamed the US for “the continuing chaos, wars, and instability” in the region:
Official Spokesman for the [PA] Presidential Office Nabil Abu Rudeina [said] … the successive American administrations bear responsibility for the continuing chaos, wars, and instability through their mistaken policy and provision of political, monetary, and military support for the continuation of the occupation [i.e., Israel], which has encouraged it to commit more crimes against our people and against the peoples of the region in Syria and Lebanon, alongside the ongoing threats against other regions.” [emphasis added] [WAFA, official PA news agency, Sept. 29, 2024]
While many Western governments have been highly critical of Israel’s response to Hamas and Hezbollah’s attacks during the ongoing 2023 Gaza war, and have supported the idea of having the PA take power in Gaza after it is done, the PA and its ruling Fatah party have, on the other hand, made their hostility to the West clear in numerous recent conspiracy theories and statements of demonization.
Even as Abbas was again welcomed in the US last week, his PA and Fatah officials are busy bad-mouthing the US administration, accusing it of being behind the war and using Israel as its pawn.
