Thursday, February 4: Corrosion of Conformity, “Happily Ever After”
R.I.P. Reed Mullin (1966-2020)
Deliverance was such a fully actualized record that it was easy to forget that Corrosion of Conformity had already gone through something like two and a half incarnations by that point (not to mention four previous vocalists), and at least one and a half of those iterations garnered some amount of claim.  “Happily Ever After” appeared on Technocracy and thus was ostensibly part of COC’s thrash phase, though it didn’t really play like thrash in the conventional sense.  For one, Simon Bob’s vocals were more relaxed and didn’t snarl/whine like Zetro or Blitz, but Woody Weatherman’s riffing was also already pointing towards something sludgier and doomier, while Reed Mullin’s drumming had a swing that was anathema to thrash metal.  At the same time, this had a more reckless feel than what would come out of the Pepper Keenan era, and was more aggressive than most Southern metal.  So in a way, “Happily Ever After” was a bridge between chapters for Corrosion of Conformity, organically following what came before while also laying the seeds for what would become.
