FROM THE MIND OF SAKEVI YOKOYAMA -- FROM THE "PUNK ON WAVE" ARCHIVES...
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on two versions of print coverage for Japanese hardcore punk bands LAUGHIN' NOSE, G.I.S.M., COBRA, & LIP CREAM, from the late, great Sakevi Yokoyama's self-published subcultural/ underground-encompassing magazine, "PUNK ON WAVE," a.k.a., "P.O.W.," c. 1985.

COVER REVIEW #13 | Anarchy in the U.K.
ORIGINAL: the Sex Pistols, featured in the album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977)
COVER: Megadeth, featured in the album So Far, So Good... So What! (1988)
"There was a problem with Anarchy in the U.K. because [producer] Paul Lani decides to have Steve Jones [of the Sex Pistols] come in because he knows him and, with all due respect, at that place in time, I wasn't too keen on having outsiders come in and play on the record... and I guess Johnny Rotten didn't really like what we did with that song, and rightly so... I don't think Johnny likes anything that anybody does, and that's part of the beauty of the imagery of Johnny Rotten. I'm not really too sure if we could ever have done that song good enough for him unless he sang on it, and even then, we would have had to run it past him to get his approval. I think if we'd included him on it it would've been much cooler... The song is one of our most fun songs to play live..." -- Dave Mustaine on covering Anarchy in the U.K., RAW, July 1992.

"MACHINE IS CLEAN, SO SWEET AND MEAN…"
NOTE: I'm watching "The Bikeriders" later today, so, I thought I'd post these on "Motörhead Monday." These are for you, Lem'. Ride on, you legend, ride on.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a photo-shoot of MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister in France, c. 1979. Lemmy reportedly never owned a motorbike, but borrowed THE STRANGLERS' Jean-Jacques Burnel's Triumph 75 Bonneville for these shots. 📸: Bruno Bloom.
^Even Lemmy knew how dangerous motorcycles were (in a world filled to death with cars, that is), which is probably why he never owned one, and thank fuck because we needed him alive decades later to keep the flame of Motörmusic alive and speeding.

Wednesday, October 16: Samhain, "Black Dream"
“Black Dream” was definitely one of the first instances of goth metal, and arguably was actually the first of its kind.  Glenn Danzig may have inadvertently invented a subgenre (he certainly helped) when Samhain released Initium- he dissolved the Misfits because he wanted to move in a more metallic direction, but the extremely lo-fi recording ensured that the album would sound like it was recorded in a dank coven, and Glenn’s love of the macabre combined with the more frenzied riffing and drumming gave “Black Dream” a simultaneously mysterious and guttural feeling.  Where the track differed from most of the subsequent goth metal was in its execution: Danzig may have wanted to move past the simplicity of the Misfits, but his methods were still punk at their core, and this was as much a response to the emerging hardcore scene as it was vibing on vampires.  All of this gave “Black Dream” an extra kick, and even with the basement-level production it banged awesomely.

Midnight set to release covers album Steel, Rust and Disgust on May 23 via Metal Blade Records; “Cleveland Metal” video out now with preorders available!
Cleveland’s favourite filth metal practitioners, MIDNIGHT, are back with Steel, Rust and Disgust – a ferocious covers album set for release on 23rd May via Metal Blade Records. For over two decades, one-man wrecking crew Athenar has been churning out a depraved blend of metal and punk — through demos, EPs, LPs, and countless splits — carving a sleazy, unholy path through the underground.…
