Apart from vampires in early vampire literature being a metaphor for death and the writings about them showing how afraid people were of death before the meaning of vampires transition more into the more romanticized misunderstood bad boy type, the vampires in Dracula are definitely a stand in for paganism right? I mean vampires in early media were almost always a stand in for something the author couldn’t understand and was afraid of or thought was morally wrong in someway or another. Dracula even mentions the Norse gods to Johnathan while he was in Transylvania (he used the name Wodin for Odin, which was what he was called sometimes in other places). The use of crucifixes and other Christian things to harm or repel the vampires is definitely like Christians trying to destroy pagan religions and heathenism because they find them unholy. Not to mention the fact that it just straight up talks about how weird the traditions from Transylvania are. Like it’s really just about how Bram Stoker doesn’t like foreigners and their pagan religions lmao

I got in too deep about acumens weddings. Heres my thoughts and itll be added to my slide deck for the dragon hunters of rtte.

1. Processional 

The officiant comes down the aisle. Then the groom with their family. Followed by the bride and their family. Once at the front of the gathered crowd, the wedding begins. 

 2.  Opening Remarks 

The officiant welcomes everyone and invites the gods to come to watch on. They then speak on the significance of the day. 

3. Sword dances

First, the groom takes his favored weapon (normally a sword or ax) and does a performance to show off agility and skill, typically to a drum beat and the stamping of the crowd. They get faster and faster till the song ends.

Then the groom kneels and holds up their weapon for the bride to take. The bride takes it (if she accepts the marriage, this is the place for denials) and places it on the ground. She puts her own favored weapon on top of it to create a cross. Then she does something similar to the Scottish Sword Dance. 

After that, she offers the groom's weapon back to him and he can take it (and then deny the marriage or not). Then they stand together in front of the officiant.

4.  Exchange of Vows 

The officiant says a few words to set the stage for the vows.

The couple repeats the vows after the officiant. 

“In the eyes of Wodin I stand, to take your hand in mine. To take you as my (husband/wife). We stand as one when together, we stand as one when apart. We share all that we are and that we have. We will raise warriors of mind and body.” 

5.  Exchange of Amulets (like exchanging rings)

6.  Knot Ceremony 

They tie a knot around the two joined hands, loose enough that the knot can be slipped off and be kept as a representation of the couple joining to become one. 

 7.  The Pronouncement 

The officiant declares them married and leads a marriage song that the crowd joins in. The couple kisses and then they walk back down the aisle while the singing continuing. The crowd then follows them to the feast that awaits after the ceremony.

and how the story of Dracula is a battle between the medieval and the modern, in which both the modern heroes and the medieval monster use the tools of each other's eras to fight one another.

In terms of faith, the novel generally associates Catholicism with the medieval, and Anglicanism with the modern, and so in the same way the mostly Anglican heroes use Catholic tools to fight Dracula.

So it's interesting to see Dracula associating himself with a yet-older pagan faith, and that association being echoed in Arthur when he destroys a vampire.

I fucking love Davinci basically scolding her son for knocking up one of their best geniuses on their team, a part of the Chaldean family, and now they gotta raise a baby while also saving the world.

Why is Wednesday spelled that way?

I teach college courses in English linguistics and writing.

“Wednesday” is a very old word, going back to times so long ago as to predate our modern ideas about spelling. I’ve been looking into the OED for some attestations of the word, and here is a representative (but not complete) list:

wodnesdæg (990 A.D.)

All the OED’s attestations following 1681 are spelled the same as that last one. Around that time, modern ideas about spelling were getting established. In older times, writers did their best to represent the way words were pronounced. Then, as now, people were likely to encounter a wide variety of pronunciations, but were inclined to write in a way that recorded whichever pronunciations were highest in prestige for their own time and place.

Wednesday got its name from Odin, or Wodin, one of the Norse gods. The “es” at the end of his name is the same possessive “s” that we still use today, although now we always drop the vowel and pop in an apostrophe.

The name “Wodin” got shortened to “Wodn” through a process called syncope. Then the “o” changed to “e” because of something called vowel harmony. Although vowel harmony doesn’t take place in modern English as a regular process, it was quite regular in Old English times. It meant that the vowel sound in “day” had an influence on the preceding vowel “o” in “Wodn,” changing it to “e.”

And in some versions of the story of the Volsungs, the valkyrie Brynhild is Attila's sister. This means that Dracula can be considered a relative of Sigurd/Siegfried the famous dragon slayer and by extension the entire disaster that is known as the Volsungs (and the Ragnarsons). Which would also make him a very distant descendant of Odin (or Wodin as Drac himself refers to the deity in this chapter).

Edit/Clarification: Got too excited with the Odin thing. It's more that Dracula is descended from the brother of Odin's great great something grandson's first wife. So still connected, but more faint.
