Kaladin set down his cup with noticeably shaky hands, his face drained of color. "He killed my men, Shallan," he said, voice loud in the suddenly silent room.

Several heads slowly turned to look at Nan Balat, who had gone far paler than Kaladin could ever manage, with a few blotches of red on his cheeks for contrast. "What? What men? When? Where? I didn't kill any men! You mean people, right? I didn't kill any people!"

"He was my brother," Shallan said, tears in her eyes. "And you killed him to save Amaram."

"Sixteen of my men, Shallan. Sixteen."

"Of course you never talked about this," Adolin muttered. "Of course not." Why would they sit down and talk about things.

"What—" Dalinar started to say, but Navani shushed him, gently taking his elbow to indicate they should leave.

"Oh, I'm sure they died in glorious battle defending HIghmarshall Amaram. What a wonderful brightlord to defend. You must have been very proud."

"Cenn. Dallet. Cyn. Lyndel —" Kaladin was standing now.

"Yes, men die in war. You're telling me they have names too? Shocking, I tell you. Truly revolutionary information." Shallan stepped toward him, expression contemptuous.

Renarin opened the door with a slight creak, dragging Sigzil by the arm to force him to leave.

"They weren't even fighting Shallan. They were just in his path. We barely understood that a Shardbarer was there. Cenn was fifteen and already injured, and your brother trampled him with a horse."

Navani all but pushed Dalinar out the door, repeatedly hushing him as he tried to interject.

"Wait, what?" Jushu said. "This — this is about Helaran? Shallan, you knew about this? For how long?"

"Blood of my fathers," Adolin moaned. "Of course."

"I'm not leaving," Teft hissed. "Lad needs someone on his side."

"He was my brother Kaladin. My brother." Shallan was openly weeping now. Judging by the snot, it probably wasn't a lightweaving to make Kaladin feel worse.

"I know," Kaladin said, face twisting in guilt. "I know. I'm so sorry, Shallan." He reach one hand out but pulled it back immediately. "I — you have no idea how much I regret defending Amaram, but I did the only thing I could at the time."

Shallan let out a broken cry, then charged forward, knocking over a chair to reach Kaladin.

Adolin scrambled over the table, trying to reach them in time, but his wife was already there, throwing her arms around bridgeboy.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "I hate you. I shouldn't have said any of that. I love you. I'm sorry."

"Oh thank the Heralds," Adolin said, slumping back. He didn't really know what his plan would be if they actually started attacking each other. Cry, probably.

"Kaladin Stormblessed killed Helaran?" Wikim whispered.

Adolin winced. Yeah. This was probably how this was always going to go.

At least Kaladin hadn't written a book about it.

Shallan and Kaladin never actually talk about him killing Helaran until well post Oathbringer, when, and it is important it happens in exactly this way, she and Balat are having a petty sibling fight in front of company and she yells "KALADIN CAN YOU KILL MY NEXT OLDEST BROTHER"

Look before the War Within starts and Anduin gets to work on his Shadowlands gotten trauma and development I need to dunk on him (affectionate) for a quick second okay?

So in Before the Storm he has this line:

"Her [Sylavnas's] eyes narrowed. Anduin knew she understood the lesson of this day's tragic events. She was not universally loved among her people. He was. She ruled with an iron fist. He ruled with compassion. (pg347)"

Which comparatively sure, fair. Sylvanas has just put a hard, murderous, stop to Calia's first attempt at girlbossing and killed about half the desolate council. Before the Storm is what it needed to be for BfA and beyond.

But I would like to point out that earlier in the book we have this:

"Anduin had been informed that negative sentiment was not limited to his advisors. Guards and Shaw's people had reported that there was muttering in some of the taverns and on the streets. The guards had been instructed to interrupt such conversations if they verged on sedition or grew violent. (pg 248)"

Baby boy that is not universally beloved and ruling with compassion. Lol. Lmao even.

I've scrawled all in my copy with little notes and I have a messy word document with rewrite ideas for this 6 (!) year old book. I am excited to see what we have going on under Silithus. In the end WoW is a video game that needs to keep selling and making new storylines.

“What do you mean, you don’t feel the same way anymore?” Laran demanded. “We. . . did things together! Didn’t you like it?” “No, no, it’s not that,” Veil said. Storms, how could she describe what had happened to her desire? “I just don’t feel like doing those things anymore. I still want to do other stuff. . . ” Laran crossed her arms, lit from the side by Salas’ violet light. “What, like kissing? Over the clothes stuff? It’s not like you ever wanted to be out with me in public. What’s left?” Veil shrugged. “Okay, we could play Towers at the barracks. Have dinner at your stew–” “Oh, so you can ogle the Highmarshal while I dodge Lyn’s questions about the nature of our relationship? Yeah. Sounds great,” Laran fumed, turning abruptly to look out over the mountains. Veil could tell where this was going. “We could do whatever you want. What do you want to do?” she asked, trying not to sound like she was begging. The tall Windrunner was silent for a while, then let out a long sigh. “I don’t think I want anything else. You know, Veil, some relationships shine like spheres, and others flash like lightning.” She turned to look at Veil. “It was bright while it lasted, but I can hear the thunder now. Goodbye, Veil.”  Without another word, Laran stepped up onto the balcony railing and pushed off, flying at speed into the darkness. “Everstorms!” Veil cursed into the night. She hoped it wouldn’t go this poorly with Ral when she saw her tomorrow.

#i don't want to derail this since this is a veey good post#but in the tags I would like to speculate -#i think that's because these people weren't written to be companions at all#it feels like they were written to be the sylvanus windrunner/grom stormscream of a dragon age MMO#it feels like a product of the fractious nature of veilguard's development cycle#in fact even the art style - and the decision to make unique design aesthetics for each faction - feels like an MMO holdover#it's not clear to me that they ever intended to give you the origins-style introduction quest despite the diversity of backgrounds#it does feel like a cynical mishmash of the 'greatest hits' of dragon age#the origins of the first game and their unique interactions#the wisecracking hawke of the second game#and the lighthouse feels to me most like skyhold w/ it's exploration/development and the companions all getting their own space#throw it all in the food processor and make a new game#except that in isolation none of these things work that well#origins doesn't work w/out setting the narrative stakes for your character before the darkspawn are even introduced#hawke doesn't work unless you are forced to play hawke - sure there's a dialogue wheel and all#but hawke is a fixture od DA2 and you cannot sub in the HoF or Inky in and expect the game to hold up#skyhold and halamshiral work because this is the senate/jedi council from the prequels refusing to help padme -#it's an inherently political game in a way that neither of the previous titles set out to be#you can't just copy what worked previously sans the context that made it great and expect to come up with a masterpiece#and to be clear - I am not anti-homage in any context#if a jazz musician quotes the mario-kart theme they make the music richer by giving a moment love for an entirely different medium#but these things cannot be the framework of new art lest they become parody#and I am sorry to those who have enjoyed the game - I sincerely hope you continue to#but please don't tell me that I am hateful or evil for not finding this a flattering addition to a franchise I love#datv critical (tags via @pip-n-flinx)

What’s really jumping out at me on my second playthrough is that the writers of the first three games understood that your character was the main character. The Veilguard writers clearly thought that the main characters were their characters, the companions.

Every scene is about setting the companions up as cool or competent or sympathetic. Often, this is done at Rook’s expense. The companions get all the witty one-liners; Rook’s attempts at humor not only frequently fall flat, but are frequently called out for falling flat (even when they’re completely automatic and the player has no say in them).

The companions have all the knowledge and skills; Rook just brought them all together and gives them all pep talks so they can focus. I’m trying to edit out all of the comments where Rook is like “Um… what????” from my videos, and let me tell you, it takes WORK. There are A LOT of them. I can count on one hand the number of times when the Inquisitor or Hawke comes across as dumb, but it seems to be a built-in, unavoidable part of Rook’s character. I have not selected a single “purple” option in all of Act 1, and Rook is still coming across as the kid who tries to be the class clown to cover for the fact that he’s always confused. Rook’s role in most scenes is to say “Uhhh… what?” so that the companions look smart.

Rook is always the one offering sympathy and never the one getting it. No one actually comes to comfort you after Varric’s death. No one asks you how you’re feeling about having to lead the team now that Varric is gone. No one tries to reassure you or give you advice for dealing with the trickster god haunting your dreams. We’re told that Neve could keep Solas out of your head, but she never actually offers to do this for you. No one comforts a Shadow Dragon Rook when Minrathous is destroyed or a Grey Warden Rook when Weisshaupt is destroyed. Rook’s problems don’t matter. Only the problems of main characters matter.

Rook is a secondary character in their own story.

dark ranger au asks / how does alleria interact with other forsaken on the day to day, in terms of casual interactions? ie; when speaking to shopkeepers, regular citizens, or the dreadguard? how well does she take to the cannibalistic hunger? how about the less-articulate (but often well-meaning) undead, like the abominations and the ghouls?

Particularly in the beginning, I believe she’d feel out of place. Yes, technically she is one of them now, yet she holds on too strongly to her living beliefs to simply set aside the fact she fought against the Forsaken until not long ago (and it is fundamentally different from staying with Sylvanas, because that decision is not as ideological as it is personal and relative to their bond as sisters and the failure Alleria believes to have committed towards Sylvanas by not being present when her sister needed her most). She would not antagonize them in any way, but neither would she feel comfortable amidst them, at least not at first. I believe her more casual interactions would be mostly politely distant, specially the more transactional ones, such as dealing with shopkeepers and so. Nevertheless, given time, if Alleria came to feel as truly part of the Forsaken, those interactions may grow to be less distant, with her even becoming more receptive towards the other Forsaken, maybe.

That said, I don’t think it would be the same for all kinds of Forsaken, and that the more twisted and mindless they are, the less capable of overcoming it she would be. As well meaning as they might be, Alleria would have a hard time thinking they are anything other than deserving of pity. Clinging to living morals means that the way abominations are made, for example, would still unsettle her, and that in the end she would still feel the more monstrous undead are beneath those that have clearer minds, that they are less “people” in a sense, even if she wouldn’t consciously do so, though I think it would be somewhat conscious too.

As to the cannibalistic hunger, from what I understood (and correct me if I’m wrong, I’m new to Forsaken lore in general tbh so I’m extra prone to making mistakes here) while the Forsaken don’t need to eat, they hunger for the flesh of humanoids and consuming it allows them to heal, or eases their suffering as undead, or both. So, having that as a start point, she wouldn’t be immune to it, but she would fight it, regardless of healing properties and/or strength or whatever it would grant her. Again, she clings too much to her living beliefs and morals to allow herself to succumb to it, no matter how strongly it was felt (and she would be repulsed by the fact she even feels like that at all, I think it would be one of the aspects of it that would in truth make her feel like, well, perhaps she did become a monster after all). I think she would succeed in resisting it completely, though; Alleria has resisted much through sheer force of will, and though admittedly her previous experiences were more mental than they were physical, I think she’d learn to deal with this, too. And as far as healing would be concerned, it would either be the old fashioned way or recurring to magical means, which would probably be the case more often, considering her ties to shadow magic.

Me: The Burning of Teldrassil should not have happened and Sylvanas' characterization from BFA onward was written by sexually predatory men who openly despise woman that are angry and vocal about the abuse they suffered at their company.

WoW Twitter: Sylvanas was always an awful evil monster. Look at the lore.

Me: Even if she was, which she wasn't, the fact that these writers made an evil monster out of an abuse/trauma/SA survivor should come across as at least a little suspicious given the very real allegations they have faced recently and the misogyny and bigotry they've allowed to fester in their player base. That they chose to burn the capital of the most matriarchal race in Azeroth should not be overlooked either. BFA/Teldrassil reeks of misogyny from top to bottom.

Why do people think killing your assaulter makes you a bad person? Like I have a character who killed her assaulter(a cop whom began to attack her) and the officers in the roleplay game immediately reacted ”it’s still wrong”. No it’s not. Granted, I’m not surprised people would react negatively to a Caribbean woman killing her assaulter whereas they get to murder protestors easy peasy. Moving on, I genuinely do not get why people think killing an assaulter makes you just as bad?

Because it goes against the idea that victims are supposed to suffer in silence and not bother anyone with the fact they're being wrong. Whenever someone says that taking action against someone assaulting you makes you just as bad, it's just them saying "Stop trying to make me feel bad for not caring."

Because when has Harley ever gotten this? When has she ever had a partner who actually apologized for their behavior towards her? Who assured her that how they acted wasn't her fault and that she didn't deserve to be mistreated? Who else demonstrated that they loved Harley so completely and utterly before Ivy did in this comic?

No one.

I don't give a fuck what you say. This was the most satisfying thing I have ever beholden from DC. The Batman's got nothing on this.

I wish I had ysayle’s drive to fight for her beliefs, or tyrande’s fierceness, or aymeric’s will, or minfilia’s heart. alas, I don’t think I quite live up to them. quiet, distant fran, willing to push away people because she believes it’ll be best for them, loyal to the few who got close to her is the one more similar to me I think, and still I think it’s more I wish I was like her than that we really are alike.

okay so: fic recs

So this is gonna be really long and rambling (I'm sure), but we start with the basics.

If you're only ever going to read one and only one fanfic in your entire life you have to read Increments of Longing. It's a Jaina Proudmoore/Sylvanas Windrunner fanfic, but it's AU enough and so well written, that you probably do not actually need to know anything about Warcraft or World of Warcraft and the respective lore and backstory to enjoy it. Just look at it like a very good fantasy novel about an arranged marriage. [...]“But you would tell me what you want?” Sylvanas asked in a voice that was far too controlled to be truly nonchalant."[...] I could not even tell you why, but this line there from the second chapter? It gives me feels (and I could not even tell you what exactly I'm feeling, but yeah).

Anyway, read it (I've read it twice now)!

Okay, from the same author I also whole-heartedly recommend you search the mountain. Which is another Jaina/Sylvanas story, again AU, with Jaina being Drust. You do not necessarily need background info - there even is a map of Kul Tiras included - but you'd probably benefit from it. Particularly the early chapters, when you get to know Arthur, made me laugh and giggle quite a bit, even though the story itself is - since it's about the Drust and a civil war - a bit of a horror story/military fiction crossover I'd say. Good read.

And my kinda guilty pleasure (also from the same author) is no end in sight. It's a story about Suramar (and healing). And when I started playing WoW towards the end of Legion, shortly before the Argus patch, I absolutely fell in love with that region/city and the Nightborne - probably because I wasn't stuck on the repetitive content of it for forever lol. So this story about Thalyssra and Jaina and the other Nightborne NPCs is awesome. I was actually considering to also write about Jaina/Thalyssra, simply because just imagine the insane magic those two could do when working together (I mean they kinda do in Nazjatar), but knowing me, this will probably never get past the conception stage.

Inevitability is also absolutely amazing (it's another - you probably guessed it - Jaina/Sylvanas AU, with both of them being professors - considering I've been working in academics for the last 15 years that's kinda my jam). And I have a lot of thoughts about it, which for the sake of not boring people to death I'm gonna abbreviate (but well I'm ready to talk people to death if they are interested). One: I'd love to meet this Sylvanas. Two: I'd never have the guts to talk to her, but I'd totally want her to take me home lol (and I'm not even sure I'm gay). Three: life at universities around here is very different from - I'm assuming - the US.

(Also if you're into AUs, go check Fearless - which features witches and ghosts and is fun.)

Okay, so now we're coming to how I actually fell into the whole Jaina/Sylvanas thing. It's because of Daugthers of Sea and Snow. Which is a Frozen/WoW crossover featuring Jaina/Elsa I found by looking through Frozen Fanfics when I was bored around the time Frozen 2 came out and then completely forgot - it was still work in progress then; I found the still open tab in my browser like four to three weeks ago, saw it was finished now and devoured the whole thing. And while I was there, I looked at the other things that author had written - and that's how I stumbled upon Jaina/Sylvanas, like two years late. Which is probably kinda ironic, since I played BFA a lot (mythic raiding beginning with Uldir), loving the Storyline in Kul Tiras and being absolutely enamoured with Jaina especially after her Warbringers vid (I still sometimes humm the song) - and liked Sylvanas since Warcraft III. Sometimes life is weird.

So and after that I jumped down this particular rabbit hole while doing a thrilling backflip. There is an assortment of other stories that I very much enjoyed.

A Touch of Arcane - the first fix of political marriage AU for Jaina and Sylvanas that I got (I think it was actually the first Jaina/Sylvanas fic I read period). And boy did I get hooked to that.

Along the same lines but different are Worth the Trouble and Two Rooms.

If you're into AUs for that pairring, you'll find a lot of intereseting ones from the Author katofthenorth. The one about diving is really cute.

Stories not yet finished that I thoroughly enjoyed so far (most of them political marriage AUs - lol I'm a sucker for those okay, it's not my fault!):

Ink and Honor is amazing. I came for Jaina/Sylvanas, but I love the Thalyssra/Vereesa storyline just as much - it's sooooo cute, like even Genn ships them ^^.

Measure of the world. They aren't married (yet, it's a possibility though I'd guess and I haven't even reached the end of the so far posted chapters yet, but enjoyable read nonetheless).

The Lighthouse. Amazing AU, I love the idea - and it's not political marriage! I cannot wait for the next chapters.

I've dug too many holes into this thawing ground. This story gave me a lot of feels too.

Honorary mentions for stories that I'm assuming might never be finished, but are amazing reads.

Shot in the Dark. Fuck that is awesome! Secret agents and spies - okay technically snipers, but it's the feeling that counts, right? (and Tyrande in a suit is a nice bonus).

Trust in Me. Sylvanas as Jainas bodyguard AU.

Okay so... I still have like 250 tabs or something ridiculous open in my browser (that's not overstating it, it's fact, in fact I might be understating it at this point and it could already be 300) and I haven't obviously read all the amazing Jaina/Sylvanas fanfics out there yet, particularly short ones or one shots or series might have gotten lost, since I usually filter for high wordcounts only. So, if anyone feels stuff is missing, it does not mean I didn't like it, it could be I've just not read it yet.

And now for something completely different.

I want to point towards one of the coolest crossover stories/series I've ever read: Felicitas. Which is an Arrow/Highlander/Raven crossover that imagines Felicity as an ancient immortal. And it's just soooooo good, I've been following it for years. (That being said, I never watched Arrow past season 2 and I probably never will considering what I know about how the story of the show continues, I've been burned once with Bering and Wells, I'm not going there again. But that's totally fine, because Felicitas also only goes as far as Season 2.)

And then there's still waters and quiet men. I'm not even sure what to say about it. The sheer lunacy and the insane escalation present in this story should not have amused me as much as it did I think, but I remember laughing tears when reading this, because while it's actually really sad that some people might find this kind of behaviour of male characters in fiction normal, it was abso-fucking-lutely hilarious in my opinion. (That said, I've probably only read it halfway, but still, it's hilarious! Well if you have the same maybe weird sense of humor I have anyway.)

New Beginnings is a FemShep/Liara crossover with Stargate SG-1. So it's combining my favourite TV show with my favourite Videogame of all time. And it's brilliant.

So yeah that's my fic recs for the time being. If you just want a tl;dr, go read Increments of Longing. (I just cannot stress enough how amazing that story is.)

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I last drew this character seriously. I gotta say, I think I’ve come a long way.

This is one of my favorite OCs from the Sailor Moon verse: Princess Nyxena aka Sailor Nemesis. Older sister of Princess Selenity, wielder of the Kurozuishou (before the Black Moon Clan got their mitts on it), and Guardian of Judgment. She’s the one that hands down sentencing whenever divine law of the cosmos is broken.

Who knows? Maybe this’ll reignite my passion for an old fic.

With the release of Sailor Moon: Eternal, I got bit by the ol' otaku senshi bug and decided to give my gals a face lift. Meet the Lost Guardians! Sailor Nemesis - Princess Nyxena of Nemesis, Soldier of Righteous Vengeance, daughter of Queen Selenity and eldest princess of the Silver Millennium Sailor Kallisto - Soldier of the Hunt and Deputy of Princess Jupiter's Moon, Kallisto Sailor Salacia - Soldier of Prophecy and Deputy of Princess Neptune's Moon, Triton Sailor Caelum - Soldier of Storms and Deputy of Uranus' Moon, Miranda Sailor Arachne - Soldier of Weaving and Deputy of Pluto's Moon, Charon As mentioned in a previous pic I drew (which I'm thinking of redoing cause perfectionist), Nyxena/Nemesis was given the planet Nemesis to rule and act as judge and arbiter of cosmic strife within the Milky Way. Of course she needs her own bodyguards, those who can pinpoint and fetch any criminals and bring them before the court, and since the Planetary Princesses were already taken by her little sister, she looked for potential candidates on their moons. Nemesis loves her girls and they work great as a team. Salacia predicts/scries for the criminal, Kallisto hunts them down and chases them into Arachne's trap, and Caelum delivers the knockout punch before hauling them back to Nemesis. Their story's one of my faves and who knows, maybe when I'm done playing in the World of Warcraft sandbox, I'll come back to Sailor Moon. We’ll have to see :D

I’m back again with more civvie drawings! This is Angelene Marris, also known as Lena. She’s 17, she’s a romantic goth, gets mugged by the future, and will easily get lost in her own house because of all the different paths she sees. This is my first time drawing a gothic fashion style, so it’s really simple, but I think it suits her paler color palette.

And of course her Guardian form, Sailor Salacia, Soldier of Prophecy.

So I was doing the ICC fight as usual (Arthas give me the horse dammit) and noticed two things:

1. Uther’s soul (or a part of it) is in Lights Hammer if you go back after defeating the Lich King. Why did this piece go there? Wouldn’t his soul have reformed when Frostmoure was shattered?

2. During the fight w/ Arthas, he says “watch, as I remake this world in my image”. Did he mean his [Arthas’] image or was it the Jailer speaking through the Lich King?

I hope that Zovaal controlling Anduin works like Harry Potter being Voldemort’s horcrux.

So if we have to “kill” Anduin, we only eliminate the part of the Jailer in him and don’t actually kill him.

Or if we kill the Jailer, he takes the part of his soul or whatever back from Anduin to revive himself and then Anduin joins us for the final fight.

9.1 Spoilers ahead

I have a theory…

THE BROKERS ARE SOULS OF FIRST ONES, AND SO ARE THE ATTENDANTS IN ORIBOS AND THE ETERNAL TRAVELER.

Let me explain:

As I ran through the Tazavesh mega dungeon, and the brokers opened portals to Azeroth, but remained solid, I realized that it was the same magic Zovaal used in the SoD ending cinematic, and roughly the same colour as the magic the attendants use to tp in Oribos and Korthia. The Eternal Traveler has similar magic when you fist summon him and when he leaves(see mount from Shadowlands Collectors Edition). Since we can infer that Zovaal was headed to the Sepulcher of the First Ones(or Nathraza, the Dreadlords home world, [Sidebar: based on in-game cutscenes and quests, he uses the inter-dimensional portal magic which makes me think he’s headed to Nathraza in 9.2]), I wonder if he(Zovaal) just needs First Ones magic to exist outside of the Shadowlands. I think that’s why he said Denathrius had ”served his purpose”(because Zovaal wouldn’t be able to take him out of the Shadowlands); and why he is using Anduin as a vessel and not a soul.

Champion Urbosa (Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild), Sylvanas Windrunner (World of Warcraft), and Princess Merida (Brave)

Urbosa and Thexia are both bad bitches and they fuckin know it. Their fighting styles are similar and both possess confidence that cannot be trampled. But unlike Urbosa, Thexia is not so compassionate nor motherly.

Mercy can be a weakness. In the end, all that matters is the bigger picture. Thexia shares a similar mindset, and attitude, with that of Sylvanas Windrunner; rules can and should be broken if it means one’s actions can guarantee a better future.

Like Merida, Thexia strives for excitement in her life. She finds the high, luxurious life of a Sith Lord to be drab at times; she is expected to attend formal galas, parties and socials, but she’d rather be doing something more meaningful for the Empire.
