did you know you can do flips and tricks in white water kayaking? i certainly did not before I interviewed Natalie Anderson. we had an awesome talk about how she balances being a mom, uplifts her community, and follows her passion.

page 564 - okay, I can't let it go yet because it is all just churn, like the cutaway of this popular rapid in the Adirondack Mountains of north-east America.
I'm too annoyed with myself to actually explain my thinking here, so I'll just leave some breadcrumbs for you to figure out the metaphor.
-AI
-consumption and regurgitation
-ouroboros
-diminishing returns
-diminished humanity
-swim in an innocuous river
-pulled into a faster current
-no matter how hard you swim the shore is out of reach
-trapped in the churning water gasping for breath whenever you break the surface for a frantic second
-smashed against rocks having your skin gouged and peeled from your body as your blood flows into the river's roiling waters the world goes grey then black because you've swallowed too much water and not enough oxygen
-diminished individual

Ok elaborate on the white water kayaking if you would like bc that’s incredible
this is. maybe the thing i think about most lol. NO idea how much people know about kayaking but uh. ask me!
so whitewater kayaking is interesting as a sport bc while there ARE major racing events (the green race!! the north fork championship!! go look them up they’re SICK) it is generally not a formalized racing series that culminates in a trophy like in motorsports. like there’s no seating for spectators even. you get to these races by hiking two hours through the woods and parking your ass on a rock by the river and hoping you don’t fall in bc you are BLASTED drunk. they’re big parties most of the time!
so while the best kayakers in the world DO compete in these things and win them, the sport is frankly more about doing sick stunts with your friends on beautiful rivers all over the world than like. cutthroat fanatical competition. which bezz (who HATED racing against people as a kid never wanted to fight on the track to go fast) would LOVEEEE imo. also literally it is bad practice to go boating alone you NEED a homie with you at all times that’s how you run shuttle that’s how you set safety that helps you scout rapids it is a homie-based activity!!! and bez loves his friends SOOOO bad and especially loves to do dumb life-threatening stuff with them. that’s what big water boating IS.
and it’s just. some aspects of the stuff happening at the ranch and the broader culture of whitewater is very similar in terms of vibes to meeeee. like the adrenaline addiction the injuries the constant threat of death the long hair the dumb tats the earrings the SAME fucking sunglasses kayakers get just cheaper ones. the energy drink sponsorships the going skiing 24/7 in the off-season…. that’s a fucking kayaker to me lol. i look at him and genuinely question why he is not in a dry suit bombing waterfalls in chile. #beater #steazy #booflife he’d love it so bad.
and i AM saving all of my narrative thoughts on bezz kayaking for a fic one day maybe. problem is i don’t know shit about the whitewater scene in italy so i’d have to make these boys like. appalachian. but i do know cele would have the world’s most atrocious rookie crush on hot trip leader bezz and when cele dump trucks a raft and has to do a swim beer out of his nasty bootie (whitewater has like. a reverse shoey system where you only do them if you fuck up) and bezz like, puts his big hand on the back of cele’s neck as he chugs this nasty beer (for maximum crazy this is bezz’s shoe bc cele is a rookie and didn’t want to shell out for the whitewater specific shoe and is wearing chacos) and cele has a small religious experience and flushes BRIGHT RED.
anyways if you want to check out some sick kayakers and are curious regarding the vibe i recommend following aniol serrasolses (catalan legend), nouria newman (badass. has yelled at my brother), and evy liebfarth (from my hometown!). liebfarth is going to the olympics this year in kayaking slalom which IS a formalized racing series but one that generally takes place on closed courses and such and is a small niche in the broader culture of the sport. still very cool and very hard to do. there is also dane jackson who is the arguable GOAT of the sport i just think he’s kind of swagless and one time he put my brother on youtube after he dislocated his shoulder when they were paddling the royal gorge like. cmon man. also his daddy owns a major kayaking manufacturer booooo. he does win the green race like literally every year which IS annoying. to me.
#does this make sense. to anyone but me.#when i write the bez/cele whitewater au…. oh boy….#callie speaks#motogp#asks#if you get me going on kayaking i will not stop

"Surely there was a better way to convey this information" probably! That may be why I'm no longer asked to contribute to our social media page at work!
But its that season again and i want to remind everyone that just because an object is vest-shaped and floats does not make it a lifejacket. Only a Coast Guard approved PFD is tested and rated to save your life. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
This...thing pops up in searches for "child's inflatable lifejacket" and bills itself as such. But scroll down and we find an explanation:
In contrast to life vests meant to keep your head above water, our vest enables you to swim smoothly with your head in the water. It keeps you buoyant longer for a safe and enjoyable experience - without worry of surprise riptides or fatigue.
Catch that? This thing is not intended to and will not keep your head above water, the single most important thing a personal flotation device should do. What if you are in a riptide and fatigued while wearing this thing and not longer able to keep your breathing hole above the water's surface? You're shit out of luck. You drown.
Consumers may notice that there is a warning notice on the back, but the good people at Amazon have cleverly obscured it. We can still make out "does not protect [...] drowning". If your waterwings, floaties, or vest-shaped inflatable have a disclaimer like this then they are not rated to safe your life, your child's life, your dog's life, whatever!
By contrast, every Coast Guard approved PFD has labeling like this:
It will clearly say USGC approved and have an approval number. It will say WHO it is rated for (infant, child, youth, adult), the size (small, medium large), an upper weight limit, and generally what kind of recreation its approved for (near shore versus offshore etc). It will give you instructions for proper use and signs that your lifejacket is nearing the end of its utility and needs to be replaced.
Not all personal flotation devices are suited for all activities. Whitewater kayaking and deep-sea fishing need more specialized gear than a day at the lake. But you should have, at minimum, a correctly-sized, well-fitting, CG approved PFD in serviceable condition for any kind of activity on or near the water. Have it, but most importantly, wear it!!!!!

what no gos would marc commit while kayaking. translate his aggressive riding to kayaking faux pas for me...... if you want.......
this is interesting because kayaking is an individual sport, and for many only SOMETIMES a competitive one. the big formalized racing series like slalom are often done on courses DESIGNED to minimize risk, the rapids max out at class 3 or 4 and as such rarely attract the real daredevils like marc… so competitive freaknasty that he is i think he sticks to the BIG stuff and indulges in like. the occasional north fork race… and there’s only really a couple of those big water races a year… fr most of the sport at the top level is simply trying to outdo YOURSELF.
ANDDD most extreme kayak races (for safety!) operate on time trail format rather than the rubbing is racing philosophy (the exception is kayaking cross… check it out at the olympics this year…). so only rarely are you directly able to impact the safety of another person for the worse. for instance, when someone dies kayaking, there typically isn’t anything another person could have done in the lead up to the accident to prevent said accident from happening (though assisting with rescues is a HUGE part of being a safe boater. there a books written on it). NOW. marc has been dangerous in many ways on track because HE is happening TO other people. he’s doing a risky pass. sending it on the cooldown lap. left his brain at home in argentina. what happened literally this morning in quali with aleix. and in a whitewater instance, there ARE less than safe things you can do as a group (not scouting or not setting someone up below the rapid are big ones.) but the only way he could outright get someone HURT is to not pay attention and accidentally ignore if a swim or a pin happened. the danger is in the damage control. which if marc was ignoring would just mean that he’s a bad kayaker if i’m being honest. like marc as badsafety in motorsport is him getting so in his head that he wants to WIN that risk doesn’t matter. the competitive temptation doesn’t exist here. it isn’t ingrained. the motivation would change. in whitewater if he’s paddling with someone and he isn’t paying attention he would just kinda suck. you HAVE to know what’s going on around you and i think he does !
so at the end of the day i think the reallll crazy stuff is just gonna be marc as an individual and whatever rapid he thinks he has the skill to send it on, which i imagine is most of them ! i imagine he sees a rapid everyone else would class as unrunnable and says nahhhh i see a line. and then he sticks that line ! i imagine he’s got alex in the jungle in chile and they’re doing a first descent on a section of river no one’s ever done before with no real option of calling for help! alone out there adrenaline RACING just happy as a clam! i imagine he is not scouting rapids he should absolutely scouting! i think he sees high water and says hell yes! giant hole? put me in coach i can surf it! kayaking on a destroyed shoulder? him and every other elite kayaker in the world (nouria newman JUST recovered from the same surgery marc had in 2019 and so did my BROTHER. he ain’t special.) like there are specific safety philosophies that i imagine marc ignores but rarely do i think it would edge into the dangerous for OTHER PEOPLE territory, which is where marc can make controversial hay, and frankly i think MOST paddlers are that level are so wrong in the head that they take all the same fucking risks aksjddh….
that being said i DO think he sends it on a sketchy rapid to impress vale and vale gets his trademark mixture of hornyworried and mildly insecure concerning marc’s status as the Next One (i imagine vale used to do that a lot, then lost sic and shaped up. which is the character arc of every kayaker in the world over a certain age as long as the drowning victim is not in fact almost themself) and that’s how they have an epic divorce concerning marc’s hairboating philosophy and it’s impact on vale’s various youngins
#fr tho extremely dangerous sport full of the same type of crazy. just less WIN oriented. marc vs himself vs nature#motogp#callie speaks#asks#rosquez#kayaking au#whitewater au#did i have a tag.
