nothing makes me roll my eyes quite like people making a big deal out of lucanis being 'the magekiller' while mostly being perfectly chill with mages in his personal life as if that's some huge objective flaw in the writing. like yeah it's his professional specialization not his personality or strongly held ideological conviction or anything. mages are tricky to kill and he's real good at it. that's why they pay him the big bucks. it's like saying a pest exterminator can only do his job if he's motivated by a deep personal vendetta waged against the entirety of rodentkind. the fact that he genuinely treats assassination like his 9-5 is, y'know. half of the whole guy, and this tracks with that wonderfully.

(honestly it's so perfect that the reason he specialized in that is, literally and canonically, that caterina looked over the books and went 'huh. we should diversify our murder portfolio, there's an untapped market here' and assigned it to him. he didn't even get to choose his own murder major, his grandmother decided that for him largely for straightforward economic reasons. dunno what to tell you, crows gonna crow. they're just merchant princes with extra knives at the end of the day, that is exactly why they'd make a choice like that, they're providing a service not going on crusades, even though lucanis manages to carve out some personal satisfaction in taking down especially shitty targets within that. I'm sorry you guys didn't get your angsty enemies to lovers arc or whatever but please understand that that only existed in your head to begin with and also that what we actually get here is infinitely funnier and MUCH more interesting, once you actually engage with the text earnestly. ssssh I didn't say that)

It's interesting how Laios struggles to remember Kabru's name right away, yet is able to recall the feeling of his grip well enough to immediately understand that something isn't right (Kabru being cuffed)

Small detail, but I think it's really interesting how in the first scene where Alec and Isabelle's dad appears in TMI, Clary's narration always refers to him by his full name (Robert Lightwood) until he speaks up in defense of Isabelle (and by extension Jace), at which point she switches to calling him Robert. It's like he earned that level of comfortability with Clary by showing that, if nothing else, he will stand up to the Inquisitor for his kids.

Oh I’m following the JP releases so yes, I yelled a lot back then when the event was out! It was soooo Leovil coded, bless them for the food! And we waited for so long to have it in the EN server damn! But oh boy, worth the wait! As I said, it’s like the official translators just gave in, no more effort to be subtle when Leona and Vil are interacting, they fully embraced the “ok it’s canon! Have your regular mom and dad flirting in vacations in front of the kids and the weird uncle. We tried OKAY?”

I’ll never recover from "I’ll show you the time of your life".

So yup, I’m feeling pretty delighted~ Plus I love the relation between Leona and Kifaji, (I can’t use "Neji" sorry) behind the railleries and criticisms you can feel how much they care and respect each other and it’s just pure gem for me, I root for them with all my heart (っ˘ω˘ς

And now, all the china knows Leona was a crybaby.

My bold take is that R.F. Kuang and Suzanne Collins are actually doing very similar things with their books/writing and both are doing it very well (but notably only one is getting criticized for it, for which there are many reasons, some fair and most not).

They are both making very specific and strategic points about the way that class, class consciousness and allyship, exploitative systems, propaganda, and rebellions work, just to name a few themes. And it’s far more interesting to examine their respective fictional worlds, both of which are heavily influenced by real-world events and history and hold it as a parallel to our own.

[It is also far more interesting to not boil their work down to shipping, “capitalism is the bad guy,” and oppression olympics for fictional characters with far too much projection into the real world.]

#i read babel at the start of the month and sunrise on the reaping at the end #both authors are fantastic and i think if you enjoyed The Hunger Games you would like The Poppy War trilogy and Babel #i agree with the criticism that Kuang can be a bit heavy-handed at times but also it makes sense to explain how interconnected it all is #(and usually that criticism is coming from people who are upset she implies “white people bad” more than twice)#Suzanne Collins is doing something quite similar in THG and even moreso in TBoSBS and SotR #both prequels are essentially political commentaries (discussing Locke Rousseau and Hume to name some)#but Babel gets criticism because it's too academic when it is explicitly historical fantasy in conversation with the time period?#which includes historical sources and literature and academia and philosophy #i may come back and elaborate more on the differences i think that are contributing to the reception to each work #(again some are fair some are unfair some are personal opinion)#R F Kuang #the poppy war #the poppy war trilogy #babel #babel an arcane history #babel or the necessity of violence #Suzanne Collins #the hunger games #the ballad of songbirds and snakes #sunrise on the reaping #bookblr

Dumb question about Yugioh but are Yami Yugi and Atem the same thing but a different name?

It's.......complicated, to put it nicely

Technically yes, they are the same character, in the sense that there's only one person who is Yami/Atem. Yami is the name he goes by before he regains his memories; while Atem is his true name, from his past life, which had been erased from his memories and from history.

Outside of canon though they're often treated as sort of separate characters. And for all intents and purposes they kind of are?? They're marketed separately, that's for sure. Meanwhile ao3 merged their character tags together, which I'm not sure how I feel about. Nobody can seem to agree on it.

I guess it's just personal preference. I'm of the opinion that they're separate characters that sort of "bleed into each other" if that makes sense. The line is super blurry. But when people tag early manga/s0 Yami as "Atem" it makes my soul pucker up a bit. Girl that is NOT Atem, that is an Unknown Thing From The Cursed Object, Be Not Mistaken

ok so i watched the first two episodes of the murderbot show that just came out and yall they cast gurathin PERFECTLY

#the preservation crew are all very lovely im enjoying what im seein #the changes that were made (like smaller crew/having pin lee being aradas wife instead of overse) makes sense #i dont LOVE that it makes me feel like pin lee gets mildly squashed for having to fill that roll #but who they cast for her is doing a really good job with her #there was a lot of details that they added that i really enjoyed #tho while i do get Why they show murderbot choosing its name and its not specified in the book it contradicts a headcanon of mine lol #which is my own issue lmao #(the headcanon being that murderbot chose the name Because of the fragments of memory of it killing all those miners)#mensah is fuckin awesome. i do love her. the actress is killin it #murderbot spoilers #murderbot #tmbd
