So I’m finally reading An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green, and it’s revived my obsession with a Thing in books that I don’t know how else to explain than just.. narrators who have Opinions or otherwise interject their knowledge/thoughts/etc into the text. So here’s an incomplete list of more books I’ve read that do this:
Almost anything by Rick Riordan, but particularly the original Percy Jackson series
That weird middle grade Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch. I read that series multiple times when I was in middle school
The Black Company by Glen Cook. Tbh I just wanted it over with by the time I finished this series, but some of the narrators made it worth it
Basically anything by Sir Terry Pratchett. He is my comfort author
The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin (although I think this is to a lesser degree in the beginning)
Genre is literally irrelevant. Basically I just want the character to go “this is all fine” and the book to record scratch and the narrator goes “everything was not in fact fine” or otherwise interject and world build. It’s delightful
If people have other recommendations for similar vibes, please

The 1bd. 1ba Wheelhouse in Inverness, California was built in 2008 and is made mostly from recycled materials. Look at this very unusual house that was on the market for $2.4M.

Give a new meaning to the word Wheelhouse, doesn’t it?

So, this is the living room area with the round cement banquette and wood burning stove. The pony wall that separates the kitchen is made of cinder blocks.

I think this could be cool with the right decor and maybe a little color. It seems bland and so haphazard.

There’s only one bd. and this isn’t it, but the area looks like it could be for a child or guest.

In the bath, you can see the various recycled woods.

This would be the bedroom. It’s looks spacious and has a view of the enclosed deck.

There’s an acre of land, and there are actually 2 homes b/c the architect, Daniel Liebermann built one for his parents first, then built another one for his wife and himself.

A Game of Thrones, Sansa I
“I don’t care what you say, I’m going out riding.” Her long horsey face got the stubborn look that meant she was going to do something willful.
“Gods be true, Arya, sometimes you act like such a child,” Sansa said. “I’ll go by myself then. It will be ever so much nicer that way. Lady and I will eat all the lemon cakes and just have the best time without you.”
She turned to walk off, but Arya shouted after her, “They won’t let you bring Lady either.” She was gone before Sansa could think of a reply, chasing Nymeria along the river.
Alone and humiliated, Sansa took the long way back to the inn, where she knew Septa Mordane would be waiting. Lady padded quietly by her side.
She was almost in tears. All she wanted was for things to be nice and pretty, the way they were in songs.

Daniel: Dad what’s wheelhouse mean?
Dick: as in what?
Daniel: as in: that’s not in my wheelhouse.
(Dick looks over to Micah)
Micah: Why’s everyone looking at me?
Dick: What’s wheelhouse mean?
Micah: Its a baseball term, Dick don’t you know baseball.
Dick: Ok, it’s where you as a batter are able to swing, but it’s gotta mean something else right? Like a power plant or something?
Micah: No, stuff in or like houses are named based off of what it has, what else would have a wheel that’s important Dick.
Dick: And you wonder why we ask you these things.

What is a homily?
Today’s “Word of Day” from our friends at Merriam Webster is “homily.” You’re thinking, “well of course he is going to mention this – it’s right up his wheelhouse.” Interesting expression that: wheelhouse. The word “wheelhouse” has gone from a nautical term, to a baseball term, to a term that describes a person’s area of expertise. Continue reading Untitled

recommendations | reading glasses, 3 years on: an updated wheelhouse, episode recommendations, and my doghouse
One of the most enjoyable parts of returning to blogging, other than writing the posts and reviews themselves, is going back to the old content I used to make. I recently went back and edited all post titles so they follow my new ‘house style’, and while going back I came across one of the last recommendations posts I did before my 2-year long break from blogging – my Reading Glasses post. In…

A Game of Thrones, Sansa I
Sansa regarded her scrawny little sister in disbelief. “You can’t look for rubies, the princess is expecting us. The queen invited us both.”
“I don’t care,” Arya said. “The wheelhouse doesn’t even have windows, you can’t see a thing.”
“What could you want to see?” Sansa said, annoyed. She had been thrilled by the invitation, and her stupid sister was going to ruin everything, just as she’d feared. “It’s all just fields and farms and holdfasts.”
“It is not,” Arya said stubbornly. “If you came with us sometimes, you’d see.”
“I hate riding,” Sansa said fervently. “All it does is get you soiled and dusty and sore.”
Arya shrugged. “Hold still,” she snapped at Nymeria, “I’m not hurting you.”
