Couple years ago, somebody asked during a PM interview whether Netflix should get into the gaming business, and my answer at that time was the same as it is today—YES! It just makes sense. Netflix dominates the relaxation segment. And how do people relax:
Movies
Music
Play
Exercise
Mediatate
Sleep
Streaming brings with it a wonderful IP worthy brands: Daredevil, Squid Game, etc. Netflix has some of the most binge-worthy IPs in the world.
They should leverage that to expand into gaming.
But here’s the big question— how's it going so far.
Let’s dive in.
Netflix’s Gaming Play: What’s Happening?
Netflix has been quietly building its gaming business for a couple of years now. Right now, they have over 90 mobile games that subscribers can play for free—no ads, no in-app purchases, just straight-up games included with your subscription.
However, reports show that less than 1% of Netflix’s massive subscriber base engages with its games daily (Newzoo). And if that sounds bad, it’s because it is. With millions of Netflix subscribers out there, you’d think more people would be jumping in. So what’s going on?
Why Aren’t People Flocking to Netflix Games?
Nobody Knows These Games Exist! Netflix does an incredible job promoting its movies and TV shows, but its games? Not so much. A lot of users don’t even realize they can download and play these games for free. If you don’t actively browse the Netflix app on your phone, you might never even see them.
Mobile-Only Limits the Audience Right now, Netflix games are only available on iOS and Android. That’s a tough sell for people who prefer gaming on consoles, PC, or cloud platforms.
Casual, Not Core Gaming Netflix’s catalog leans heavily into casual games—think puzzle games, card games, and light strategy titles. While that’s fine, it’s not exactly drawing in the hardcore gaming crowd. No one's subscribing to Netflix just to play Solitaire when they can do that elsewhere.
Where’s the Social & Multiplayer Fun? A huge part of modern gaming is multiplayer and social interactions—playing with friends, competing online, or even just sharing experiences. Netflix’s games are mostly single-player, which means they lack that sticky, community-driven engagement that makes games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, or even Among Us so addictive. Perhaps these will arrive in Phase 2 on the Netflix product solution.
No Must-Play Exclusives (Yet!) Netflix has awesome IPs—Stranger Things, Squid Game, The Witcher—but so far, its gaming division hasn’t delivered that one killer exclusive that would make people say, “Wow, I NEED to play this!” Compare this to Sony, which has exclusives like God of War and Spider-Man driving console sales, or Microsoft, which spent $69 billion on Activision Blizzard to secure blockbuster franchises. Netflix hasn’t made that kind of play
 yet.
Can Netflix Compete in the Big Leagues?
To be fair, Netflix isn’t going all-in on gaming just yet. They’ve reportedly invested about $1 billion in game studios and development—small change compared to their $17 billion annual budget for movies and TV.
But they are making moves. They’ve acquired game studios like Night School Studio (Oxenfree) and are experimenting with cloud gaming—which could be a game-changer if they bring Netflix-quality streaming tech to games.
The Future: Can Netflix Turn This Around?
I still believe Netflix should be in gaming. It just makes sense! But they need to do a few things to make it work:
Promote games better—Shove them in people’s faces like they do with new shows!
Expand beyond mobile—Bring games to TVs, consoles, and cloud gaming.
Develop AAA exclusives—Imagine a Stranger Things game as good as The Last of Us!
Make gaming social—Add multiplayer, leaderboards, or even interactive experiences tied to shows. Gaming is all about building that community.
Right now, Netflix Gaming is still in its “crawl” phase. But if they play their cards right, they could run with the big players in gaming.

WARNING I ramble whoops.
Okay bestie so the AI Olympics situation is thus: lots of commercials for the type of AI that is with like
 computers? Like Gemini for Google and Copilot for Microsoft (?) and things like that.
The Copilot ones entail lots of work use, so like “Copilot, summarize this meeting.” “Copilot, make this sheet of words into a product presentation.” And it’s being presented like “look we can make it so you don’t have to actually work AI will make your presentation for you in five minutes :)” “wow we can summarize your meeting so you don’t have to pay attention if you don’t want :)” Which. I hope the thinly-veiled threat is obvious? Like this is a poor prospect. If AI will be able to do that so effectively, jobs won’t go to humans, especially if all the humans are doing is using the AI. It’s framed so manipulatively so that you don’t think, “hey, maybe we DON’T want to encourage more machines just doing peoples’ jobs.” Plus there’s a privacy element, why would you want AI monitoring your calls. That’s weird, just in concept, especially when privacy is a precious commodity. Plus obviously the plagiarism with the presentations. It’s just AI art for businesses. Now we don’t have to pay an artist! Die.
And then there’s one in particular that I just hate, and I think it’s for Gemini? I can’t remember for sure. But the whole ad is like a dad talking about how his daughter wants to be like one of the Olympic sprinters. And instead of writing a letter
 He tells the AI to write him a letter to send to the athlete
.. what the fuck???? He spends most of the commercial essentially dictating the perfect letter anyway, so it’s so stupid and pointless, but it’s also super worrying because is this really what they want us to do with AI? They want to add a useless middleman just so they can make money? Are we not valuing the simplicity of human connection? Why would he not just write the letter himself WHY WOULD YOU WANT AI TO WRITE YOU A LETTER TO SOMEONE YOU REALLY ADMIRE THAT MAKES NO SENSE.
So sorry for how long this is I didn’t realize how mad it made me but I was just talking about it with my dad and it’s ridiculous.
TL;DR the Olympics AI commercials are ridiculous and if you know how to read between the lines, they’re super concerning also for literally the future of humanity in various ways.

i find it soooooo hard to talk abt ai without feeling like im just repeating talking points i stole from other ppl, my ai hate just feels so obviously justified and i really do find it baffling that people dont care. ummm i cant stop using the shitty robot that drains the earth of its natural resources and steals from the people who put actual passion into their work? hello? i have to use it to make this shitty image of a fish where i had to enter in like 5 different elaborate hyper specific prompts in order for it to be halfway right! we should also let this robot listen and look at everything we do ever and also let it do everything that people do btw

How is the field of artificial intelligence evolving and what does it mean for the future of work, education, and humanity? MIT President Sally Kornbluth and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman covered all that and more in a wide-ranging discussion on MIT’s campus May 2.
The success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT large language models has helped spur a wave of investment and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence. ChatGPT-3.5 became the fastest-growing consumer software application in history after its release at the end of 2022, with hundreds of millions of people using the tool. Since then, OpenAI has also demonstrated AI-driven image-, audio-, and video-generation products and partnered with Microsoft.
The event, which took place in a packed Kresge Auditorium, captured the excitement of the moment around AI, with an eye toward what’s next.
“I think most of us remember the first time we saw ChatGPT and were like, ‘Oh my god, that is so cool!’” Kornbluth said. “Now we’re trying to figure out what the next generation of all this is going to be.”
For his part, Altman welcomes the high expectations around his company and the field of artificial intelligence more broadly.
“I think it’s awesome that for two weeks, everybody was freaking out about ChatGPT-4, and then by the third week, everyone was like, ‘Come on, where’s GPT-5?’” Altman said. “I think that says something legitimately great about human expectation and striving and why we all have to [be working to] make things better.”
The problems with AI
Early on in their discussion, Kornbluth and Altman discussed the many ethical dilemmas posed by AI.
“I think we’ve made surprisingly good progress around how to align a system around a set of values,” Altman said. “As much as people like to say ‘You can’t use these things because they’re spewing toxic waste all the time,’ GPT-4 behaves kind of the way you want it to, and we’re able to get it to follow a given set of values, not perfectly well, but better than I expected by this point.”
Altman also pointed out that people don’t agree on exactly how an AI system should behave in many situations, complicating efforts to create a universal code of conduct.
“How do we decide what values a system should have?” Altman asked. “How do we decide what a system should do? How much does society define boundaries versus trusting the user with these tools? Not everyone will use them the way we like, but that’s just kind of the case with tools. I think it’s important to give people a lot of control 
 but there are some things a system just shouldn’t do, and we’ll have to collectively negotiate what those are.”
Kornbluth agreed doing things like eradicating bias in AI systems will be difficult.
“It’s interesting to think about whether or not we can make models less biased than we are as human beings,” she said.
Kornbluth also brought up privacy concerns associated with the vast amounts of data needed to train today’s large language models. Altman said society has been grappling with those concerns since the dawn of the internet, but AI is making such considerations more complex and higher-stakes. He also sees entirely new questions raised by the prospect of powerful AI systems.
“How are we going to navigate the privacy versus utility versus safety tradeoffs?” Altman asked. “Where we all individually decide to set those tradeoffs, and the advantages that will be possible if someone lets the system be trained on their entire life, is a new thing for society to navigate. I don’t know what the answers will be.”
For both privacy and energy consumption concerns surrounding AI, Altman said he believes progress in future versions of AI models will help.
“What we want out of GPT-5 or 6 or whatever is for it to be the best reasoning engine possible,” Altman said. “It is true that right now, the only way we’re able to do that is by training it on tons and tons of data. In that process, it’s learning something about how to do very, very limited reasoning or cognition or whatever you want to call it. But the fact that it can memorize data, or the fact that it’s storing data at all in its parameter space, I think we’ll look back and say, ‘That was kind of a weird waste of resources.’ I assume at some point, we’ll figure out how to separate the reasoning engine from the need for tons of data or storing the data in [the model], and be able to treat them as separate things.”
Kornbluth also asked about how AI might lead to job displacement.
“One of the things that annoys me most about people who work on AI is when they stand up with a straight face and say, ‘This will never cause any job elimination. This is just an additive thing. This is just all going to be great,’” Altman said. “This is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs, and this is going to change the way that a lot of current jobs function, and this is going to create entirely new jobs. That always happens with technology.”
The promise of AI
Altman believes progress in AI will make grappling with all of the field’s current problems worth it.
“If we spent 1 percent of the world’s electricity training a powerful AI, and that AI helped us figure out how to get to non-carbon-based energy or make deep carbon capture better, that would be a massive win,” Altman said.
He also said the application of AI he’s most interested in is scientific discovery.
“I believe [scientific discovery] is the core engine of human progress and that it is the only way we drive sustainable economic growth,” Altman said. “People aren’t content with GPT-4. They want things to get better. Everyone wants life more and better and faster, and science is how we get there.”
Kornbluth also asked Altman for his advice for students thinking about their careers. He urged students not to limit themselves.
“The most important lesson to learn early on in your career is that you can kind of figure anything out, and no one has all of the answers when they start out,” Altman said. “You just sort of stumble your way through, have a fast iteration speed, and try to drift toward the most interesting problems to you, and be around the most impressive people and have this trust that you’ll successfully iterate to the right thing. 
 You can do more than you think, faster than you think.”
The advice was part of a broader message Altman had about staying optimistic and working to create a better future.
“The way we are teaching our young people that the world is totally screwed and that it’s hopeless to try to solve problems, that all we can do is sit in our bedrooms in the dark and think about how awful we are, is a really deeply unproductive streak,” Altman said. “I hope MIT is different than a lot of other college campuses. I assume it is. But you all need to make it part of your life mission to fight against this. Prosperity, abundance, a better life next year, a better life for our children. That is the only path forward. That is the only way to have a functioning society 
 and the anti-progress streak, the anti ‘people deserve a great life’ streak, is something I hope you all fight against.”

Happy 20th Anniversary Robots In Disguise!
This year, and today in particular, marks the 20-year anniversary of Transformers Robots in Disguise airing in the United States.  This was the official English language dub of the Japanese show Transformers Car Robots, which aired in Japan the year before.   This show and it’s accompanying toy line were a big shift in the Transformers brand and affected how things moved forward in the new millennium.  It was also a big influence on me and this website in it’s early years, so both the brand and TFW2005 may not be what it is today without it.

Intro
The following is not a comprehensive article on the show proper, but rather a trip down memory lane from my personal perspective.  It was a period of change in my life, in the fandom, in the brand, and in the world – all happening at once.  Robots in Disguise was smack dab in the middle of it all and I think that’s why it still resonates with me all these years later.  For a deeper dive into the world of Robots In Disguise you can check RIDForever.info, a site I maintain just about RID and Car Robots. The 2021 updates are here, and the 2017 round of updates are here.  I’d also suggest checking the TFWe issue all about RID over on the 2005 Boards.  Now, onto today’s festivities

The Show
RID, and yes I say RID as if it is the only RID.  If you must reference that other RID show and it’s off-shoots, refer to it as RID 201x, thanks. 😊 RID aired during the Fox Kids programming block on a Saturday morning, with additional episodes set to air each weekday during the afternoon hours.  Instead of stretching the show out over the course of 30+ weeks with only a new ep each weekend, they were going to blaze through it non-stop.  By the end of the first week, we would have been 7 eps in.  That however hit a big roadblock due to 9/11 just three days later.  While some local markets did air the episodes, many larger city networks, and especially east coast markets, stuck with news coverage.   Many of us did not catch the early episodes on TV the first go around.  In addition, several of the episodes got pulled from TV due to depictions of buildings being destroyed and other similar visuals which understandably could upset children that just experienced 9/11.  So right off the bat, the new millennium and new era of Transformers were dealing with a new reality.
The show, for those that don’t know – was a weird one-off in Transformers history.  We had G1 and then the G2 remixes for a bit.  Beast Wars came on the scene and ran all the way through 2000 with it’s successor – Beast Machines.   During the Beast Wars era – Japan did a couple of their own Beast Wars shows, non-CGI extensions of what we saw in the US.   Their market wasn’t quite ready for full CGI so they stuck with traditional anime.  When Hasbro decided to continue Beast Wars into Beast Machines, Takara went a completely different way – a traditional animated show which brought back Autobots and “Decepticons”, mixing them in with the beasts.  They focused the toys on a couple new and complex molds, then filled the rest of the line with repaints of previous toys.  Old 2nd tier Beast Wars toys, G2 Laser Prime, and even some Generation 1 molds in the form of the Combaticons got new life as new characters in this show, capped with the biggest TF of them all at the time – a repainted G1 Fortress Maximus, now Brave Maximus.  It was the prototype for what the Transformers brand did for years to come – repainting old toys into new characters.  Universe, Classics, Botcon, and even some Generations runs used this method to give us some great toys in the 00s.
While there is a very complicated and long explanation for how every single Japanese show is one continuity, to someone casually starting with Car Robots it was a refresh, a new story, a new arrival on Earth.  The Autobots vs the Predacons, and eventually the Combatrons/Decepticons. It was a hard cut from the last 5 years or so of CGI Beasts.  Hand drawn traditional animation featuring vehicle Transformers.  It wasn’t G1, but many of the folks who grew up with G1 were just getting out of college around this time.  They were rediscovering their childhood love of Transformers through Beast Wars, flea market finds, raids on their parents’ attics and basements, and for the internet savvy – imports of Japanese reissues from Takara.  It was a perfect storm of nostalgia; a return to Autobots and Decepticons was welcomed by kids and adults alike.
RID and TFW2005
In the years leading up to Car Robots, I was just getting into the internet, coding, design, some digital music, and all the possibility that came with it.  Beast Wars, especially when it hit Season 2/3 and the inclusion of G1 lore, really got me focusing on Transformers again as a hobby.  I eventually combined the two newfound hobbies into one and Transformer World 2005 was born.  At no point did I ever think it would last 20+ years and take over my life in the way it did.  I started the full version of TFW2005 around April 2000, with some starts and stops before that.  That was right around when Car Robots started airing in Japan.  Through the magic of 56k internet, I was able to connect with folks in Japan and get them to send me VHS tapes of Car Robots.  Really nice, high-quality tapes too, I still have them hehe.  To the younglings reading – try to picture this: no youtube, no video sharing. The concept of streaming anything did not exist yet. Napster and the eventual peer to peer stuff hadn’t fully kicked off.  Plus, we were all viewing the internet on giant computers in our rooms at the speed of 1x on your phone.  Less than 1 bar 3G mobile speeds today.
Yes, someone recorded episodes from TV to video tape over there, did that a couple weeks at a time, then physically mailed them across the world to me, who then got them on the internet.  Can you imagine waiting weeks to watch an episode of TV the size of a twitter profile avatar?  Crazy.  Uploading a full episode to the internet was a big pain in the ass, not easily done.  I decided to get a converter that allowed me to plug my VCR into the computer and encode the tape into digital format.  From there, it was reduced using Microsoft’s WMV technology so that the episodes were about 5 MB each.  30 minute episodes at 5MB each. Dimensions – 176 x 144 pixels.  4k video today – 3840 x 2160 pixels.  You can imagine that video looked like crap.  But we didn’t care – we were blown away.  Old school animation, vehicles, some cool Japanese anime vibes, it was what we as G1 fans kinda had in the back of our heads on what Transformers should be in a new era, and we were seeing it.  Most of us had no clue what they were saying or what was going on.  Also didn’t care.  I still to this day think CR/RID is better like that.
So one of the first things TFW2005 did on the internet was provide these super small windows into Car Robots and what was going on in Japan. It helped get US fans hyped up for what Transformers could be. It got us wanting the toys, and importers bringing the Takara toy line over were moving serious product.  It helped swing Hasbro, who was planning to return to Autobots and Decepticons again down the road, to move that schedule up.  Instead of running Beast Machines until 2002 and then starting what we now know as the Unicron Trilogy, it was cut short.  Robots in Disguise as a toy line and show came over in 2001, ran fast and hard for a year with non stop releases, got extended because it did so well, and then faded into the Universe line of repaints.  The new millennium of Transformers was here and Robot In Disguise kicked it off with a bang.
Wrap Up
As we all continue with collecting Transformers now, regardless if you tagged into the fandom during G1, Beasties, the Unicron Trilogy, the Movies, or just yesterday – let’s take the time to give Car Robots and RID some props!  It set the tone for what the new millennium of the brand would be.  It gave us some toys ahead of their time.  It solidified the repaint as an accepted thing in the hobby. And it gave us one crazy 39 episode run of TV that’s still a fun ride 20 years later.

Hello anon,
I am Mod Dogfeathers*, and while posting directly to our socials is somewhat rare for me, I am This Simple Feeling's current Finance Mod, and so I thought it very important that I address your concerns directly, myself. I am very shy, I am neurodivergent, and I have severe social anxiety, and so most of the work I've done for This Simple Feeling thusfar has been infrastructural and supportive, somewhat away from wider visibility. However, I am extremely aware of the awesome responsibility that falls squarely on my shoulders as finance mod, and that the community around our zine– from my fellow mods and our potential contributors to the fans who will be cheering us on and reading issue 6 next year– must be able to depend on me to manage our finances through every stage of This Simple Feeling's production. The success of our project requires the community's collective confidence in me, and I am extremely keen to build that trust.
So, first, I want to apologize for the length of time that you've had to wait for this reply, and assure you we've been taking your concerns very seriously. Much of this time has been spent in deliberative reflection as to whether or not I should remain in this role. I love this project, and I have invested a prodigious amount of time and effort and affection into it since Head Mod @menecio approached me in early November 2020; I desperately want it to succeed. I have never wavered that I want to remain in this role, and my fellow staff have not wavered in their conviction that I should remain here, too. That said, I am aware that the success of our zine does not particularly care about what I want or what feels good, and so I took some time to seriously assess my own capabilities, to strenuously question my resolve, and to seek advice from people with zine experience who I trust. We have determined that I shall remain Finance Mod, but I want to stress that this was neither an easy nor an immediate decision– I did not let it be an easy or immediate decision, because what has always mattered to me is what's best for the zine. In the end, that determination was made based on the work that I've already done and the trust that my team has in my abilities.
Nevertheless, we want to emphasize that we continue to take your concerns seriously; we recognize that my lack of zine experience is both significant and reasonable cause for concern. We are taking additional measures to address that lack, beyond those that I insisted upon when I accepted this role. I will shortly lay out some of my relevant experience, but in recognition that it is limited and that it may not be sufficient to assuage your concerns, I want to make clear one of the additional measures that I requested during this period of consideration.
My husband and my partner of ten years, Tom, is a trained accountant, and he will now be supervising my work for this project directly. He had already agreed to assist me informally, and had– with supreme patience– already conducted a few intense, 6 hour long sessions to explain the ways that double-entry bookkeeping and Microsoft Access can be used to manage a project of this nature. He will continue to do that, but he will also be keeping an eye on my work and checking up that work periodically. I will still be managing our accounts, my name will still be on our books, and this will still be my job, but Tom will be actively present to confirm that I am doing this correctly. He does not have zine experience, he is not involved in fandom, and he does not have fandom-relevant socials– he has no specific pull towards fandom participation, the way I do– but he has worked for several years as one of two accountants for the library of one of the USA's top 40 public research universities, managing the extremely complex and surprisingly variable needs of such a massive nonprofit, and has been responsible for controlling several million dollars of public acquisitions spending in that capacity. (His way of describing this: "Each year we spent about the same amount as the budget for 10 Things I Hate About You, and I was in charge of a little over half of it.")
As part of this supervisory role, Tom is also going to maintain a presence in our server. He is not a mod and plays no part in decision making beyond occasionally giving us financial advice when asked, but he has appropriate server roles to provide direct access to mod discussions, so that he can be present to pay attention when I bring financial data to the team, and to answer our collective financial questions, should any arise that are beyond my personal capacity. When his schedule permits, he is also available to our contributors and mods to answer their questions directly in server.
What follows is a non-comprehensive, but hopefully thorough, summary of my relevant experience.
By training and professionally, I am a studio artist with an MFA, the terminal degree in my field. I manage my own studio practice. This is a complicated, variable job that requires a great deal of flexibility, responsiveness, and skill– most of which does not actually involve the hand-skills necessary to create the literal artwork the studio practice ostensibly produces. As an artist, I am a sole proprietor, and my studio is my business, but with very specific needs not necessarily found in other businesses, and I run it without assistants. I maintain my inventory and my supplies, I purchase and manage equipment necessary to create work, I manage my work through various states of creation and exhibition and– sometimes– publication, I take on clients for commission, I apply to shows (for which there is always a fee), I work with gallerists and curators, I research and make connections with different platforms and specialist logistics businesses (PayPal/money handlers, banks, streaming platforms, printers, data storage). All of those affect my studio's finances, and so they must be managed carefully, in addition to sales of prints and original artwork (thusfar handled privately, as is fairly normal– we are often encouraged not to maintain digital storefronts, because it can dissuade potential gallerists from representing us; I am in the process of threading that needle.) In this capacity, I have no employer: I am responsible for taxes– both knowing what they are and paying them– and fees, I am responsible for my costs, and I am responsible to my business partners. There is no external buffer– if I fail any of this, I am the only party responsible for making it right.
Because I believe in the transformative power of art (and, for that matter, fandom), I try to work with local arts organizations and nonprofits when possible, particularly when it comes to showing my work and engaging in community arts efforts. I prefer to support group projects that elevate multiple artists, and/or organizations that serve diverse communities. Prior to COVID, I was doing a volunteer-intensive residency with local community arts nonprofit whose mission is to bring art and heritage craft skills to communities that would not otherwise be able to access such training; COVID has necessitated a change in my ability to serve them, but I do still work for them in a more limited capacity, usually grantwriting.
Though I prioritize nonprofits, I have also worked as an assistant/intern for urban galleries using for-profit and co-op funding structures, which involved both basic work associated with gallery assistantship (manning desks, running errands, calling support businesses, promotion, show installation, etc), and sometimes work on specific projects that required knowledge of the institution's fiscal state and available funds (from contacting local businesses about the replacement of a gallery's floor and helping to plan the launching of a new residency, to more routine tasks, such as contacting local bakeries about catering or hosting satellite shows, and ordering promotional material from printers.) All galleries run on extremely tight budgets, and having been exposed to a variety different gallery funding structures (with concomitantly different priorities and audiences) gives me an awareness of the work and the precision required to achieve ambitious goals with extremely limited finances. They are why I price things out on three levels: the ideal, the nearly-ideal, and the most affordable that still meets our high bar for quality.
I have experience writing grants, both for myself and (more notably) for the nonprofit at which I am an AIR (artist in residence). The most ambitious of these grants has reached the second stage of consideration, which is notable both because the granting organization is not arts specific, the deciding board is composed mostly of bankers with deep fiscal expertise, and we were asking for funds significantly in excess of what that grant usually offers. That decision is expected in June of next year. Grant-writing is less of an abstraction on the skills necessary for a zine than it might initially seem: both involve my operation as an agent representing the organization for which I requesting money; art grants are usually for very specific projects with very specific constraints; they usually require that our funding comes from multiple sources that are then pooled to enact the project; the projects have a specific lifespan and a schedule on which key stages must be completed; they require extremely precise budgeting; we are directly accountable for both the project and the precise management and tracking of said funding; and we must be ready to provide statements and proof of the project's progress and funding at every stage of the project's active lifespan, as well as a summary report at the end.
I have curatorial experience with local and regional art shows, usually organized by a small independent team working closely with a local, preferably-nonprofit gallery who is lending us their space; those roles are very analogous to the XO/logistical role I am currently fulfilling for This Simple Feeling. Though we worked with local galleries, and could sometimes make use of some of their equipment (such as hammers and nails and– if we were very lucky– leftover paint), we were responsible for every aspect of the actual hosting of the show and associated costs. This included equipment rental, installation costs, costs to repair & repaint to walls from the normal damage of installation, catering, sometimes utilities and space rental, etc. All of those costs were additional to the cost of recruiting artists, hosting calls, managing the artists and their work, managing sales of the work throughout the duration of the show, managing the sales of any prints the artists or merch the artists wanted to offer alongside the work, and organizing any publications or promotional materials released for the shows. Each show had different financial needs, but they all required budgets prior to their beginning, modified when necessary as the project came closer to realization and new constraints presented themselves. The businesses we solicited quotes from and our cost-reduction strategies varied from show to show, but all of the teams I worked with were semi-formal groups of friends and collaborators, similar to the teams that design zines, and so we did not have a pool of institutional capital to use for funding– we had to generate or barter for all of that ourselves. We did it because we loved it and we believed in it, not because it was potentially lucrative (community art shows almost never are, even less than zines; the point is celebration of our community.)
And that, honestly, is one of the most relevant bits of experience I've accumulated to date, tangential but applicable to a project like this: the awareness that this kind of project is done for love, not money. Issue 6 is being produced for charity, but even wildly successful for-profit zines will almost never be able to make enough profit to adequately compensate the cost of the staff's time, which would be upwards of $20k, if you paid them $10/hr, which is below the cost of living in most parts of my country. The cost to hire freelance writers is, at minimum, $.10 a word. The artwork in zines would cost in the hundreds– and, more realistically, thousands– of dollars, in a professional illustrative or fine art context. The writers and artists who contribute to zines absolutely make work that reaches (and exceeds) the professional standards required to participate in those industries. Our contributors have trained for years to hone their skills, and they put those skills towards making work for us, for free; our staff similarly donate their time to accomplish very complex tasks to support that creative work; that time could be spent producing work for those professional contexts, but instead they give it to us, and they do that because they believe in us and our community, and they want to celebrate a fandom and a ship– Star Trek and K/S– that have brought us together, and (with Trek and K/S specifically) have supported fandom engagement for over five decades. They give that work to us, and the only thing they ask is for us to make a zine out of it. I am an artist and a writer, I have formal training in both disciplines, and I understand these costs: I cannot express how seriously I take the gift of their time and energy, and how profoundly I am humbled to be trusted with it.
If I sound zealous, it's because I am, and because I am excruciatingly aware that from the moment our staff begins working on this project and our contributors start making their works, the financial responsibility for taking all that gifted energy and skill and effort becomes solely my own. If I fail as finance mod, I do not fail only myself, as would be the case in my studio practice– I also fail my fellow mods and every single one of my contributors, and I fail the community responsible for the generation of work that has provided me solace for decades. If I fuck up as finance mod, it is solely my responsibility to make it right.
As I said before, your concerns are absolutely reasonable– I share many of them– and all of this experience is tangential, and zines are different projects to those that I've worked on before, with different constraints and needs. I have thus taken action and structured my own work as a mod to assuage these concerns in myself, in ways that I hope will concomitantly assuage some of your concerns as well. I am paying attention to my own inexperience, I am preventing myself from functioning on auto-pilot, I am taking nothing for granted, and I am being actively vigilant for the inevitable gaps in my own expertise.
That's easy to say, but what does it look like? Thusfar, it takes the form of huge amounts of research, and the connection to a extant network of experienced zinesters, both of which are repositories of information with which I am trying to plug some of my gaps. I know well, as an academic who also practices disciplines (art and writing) that are precarious by their nature, that there is a big difference between external research and experience– but if everyone starts somewhere, then I have gone to great lengths to map out the place where I'm starting as thoroughly as possible. I have read (and often annotated) literally every resource on the production and staffing of fandom zines that I could find. When I have a question, I check these sources and I also look for examples of whatever I'm curious about 'in the wild'. To determine the likely price of our zine, for example, I looked through seven pages of tags on popular hub/promotion blogs on Tumblr, and generated a comprehensive Excel sheet from one such session that allowed me to compare prices against the number of pages and the kinds of merch offered alongside the zines in question. To balance the holes in that mode of data collection, I have also sought contacts and tried to build a relationship with communities around zine production: i have close friends who work on zines (and who initially got me interested in this kind of project– you know who you are, and my thanks is infinite for your patience and your willingness to act as resource), and I regularly make a pest of myself by asking strange questions to folks in Discord servers dedicated to the topic (I am also grateful to these communities, in similar terms). When possible, or if the question is specific enough, I try to go directly to the source: when I was uncertain what, specifically, could be used to verify a PayPal account, and found conflicting answers in their documentation, I spent three days talking to various help desk personnel until I found a solid answer on which to proceed. All of this is basic, and deserves no accolades.
If I am anything in my personal art practice, it is a colorist, and so I already had fairly deep knowledge of color theory prior to my involvement here– however, because color accuracy is so important to printed artwork, and depends so much on printer technology, the capacity and setup of individual print shops, and digital color spaces, I have spent time researching this too. I have requested printing samples from 7 different printers, and I have peppered the ones that meet the zine's standards with esoteric questions about what kind of printing presses they use and what ICC profiles their digital presses are set up to handle. I have done this because when it comes time (very shortly) for our Art Mod (@i-drive-a-nii-san) and myself to make some final determinations on which printers we want to use, it is important to me personally that we have the most comprehensive data available with which to make that decision. The zine that we publish needs to be pragmatically affordable– but within the scope of that pragmatism, I want the best quality possible, so as to do justice to the contributions that will live on its pages. 
I am aware that all of my experience is tangential, and that the direct relevance that it has on this situation is limited. I am aware that there are gaps in my knowledge. I am aware of the awesome responsibilities I have as finance mod, and that I am a potential bottleneck upon which this project either breaks and fails or through which it passes and succeeds. I am aware of the gift inherent in every work we receive and every moment of staff working time, and the legacies at play with K/S specifically. I am aware that all the book-learning in the world has limited bearing on the actual experience of doing something on the ground. I find my experience lacking, and for that reason, I very seriously considered stepping down. I am humbled by the responsibility required by this position; I decided to stay because the trust my team expressed in me was also humbling.
My experience may be tangential, but there is a final element that I strongly suspect is applicable to my role as finance mod (and mod generally): in a project like a zine, done for love and for community, there are a myriad ways in which trust matters, small enough to overlook but overwhelming in their accumulation. The trust of the external fandom/zinester community matters, and for that reason I am being as honest as possible, and almost ceded my position to someone with greater experience; the trust of one's fellow staff and collaborators also matters in significant ways. An administrative team that trusts each other– that has confidence in each others' abilities and convictions, that understands each others' outlooks and that communicates well, and that deeply believes that that they will mutually have each other's backs– that kind of administrative team is an awesome thing, and their confidence is often perceptible to the contributors in very real ways, who then trust the administrative team to have their backs and to support them as necessary. Collaborators and administrators who have established that trust with each other tend to work together more effectively, and produce stronger work as a result, especially in a creative capacity. Good work requires creative risk-taking, which in turn requires the certainty that administration can support the necessary risk-taking and facilitate its success. The establishment of such trust is not automatic– we must work for it, actively– but the team involved in issue 6 of This Simple Feeling has that trust in each other, and the willingness to build it with both our collaborators and the wider community around our zine.
My confidence in the rest of my team is unshakeable. They have, in turn, expressed their confidence in me, that I am able to do the tasks and handle the responsibility involved with being finance mod on a project as specific and complex as a fandom zine for charity; I will trust them, and I will continue to work to earn their trust. I will also trust the broad community of zinesters around me, and solicit their expertise to help me navigate unfamiliar waters, and I will trust the professional expertise of my partner, who I have asked to donate his time. I will not lie, and so I make no promise that I won't fuck up in this role– but I will absolutely promise that if I do, I will make it right, and I will do everything in my power to prevent such fuckups from occurring in the first place.

The Infinite Salt post
(I’m just getting this out of my system, I don’t like being a constant downer so after this I will restrict myself to the occasional gif reaction in my new My Salt tag unless there’s some massive breaking news that must be commented upon, I promise.)
Ok, this ended up longer and saltier than I had thought, also more off-brand, so under the cut it goes!
So, gameplay reveal reaction was
mixed. I wasn’t really surprised at them going hard on the Combat Evolved aesthetic and story beats, but after that Slipspace Engine trailer a few years back I was expecting it to look a lot prettier (I don’t really care about 4k and 60fps and all that guff, but when fricking Domino’s is taking shots then yeesh).
Ok, start positive: I like the Pilot, a bit cheesy, but I like him. I like his and Chief’s interaction, I like how Chief responded which shows we’re not just getting block of wood blank slate so the dudebros can project Chief, so that’s nice. Pity I can’t allow myself to get attached, as he’s already getting some heat for talking back to Chief, and if anything gets criticised that means it must be swept away, rather than worked on, developed, or given a conclusion, am I right?!
Confession: I don’t hate Halo 5. It is extremely flawed in execution, and does things to loved characters which needed much more development and explanation in the game, and was too overcrowded to let its characters breathe, but I don’t hate it. (Perhaps one day I will write my True Heresy, ‘Why I Don’t Hate Halo 5: An Essay,’ but I need to write ‘Sarah Palmer is Awesome And You Guys Are Just Mean’ first). With some more work and development, a proper conclusion might have salvaged it.
But nope! Let’s just ignore that gigantic elephant in the room. Let’s kill Banished, they’re like the Covenant, right. People liked them in Halo Wars 2, right? Yeah, so I didn’t care for the Banished. Felt it was a lot of big overture, reality their top guy getting chumped by a century old colony ship. Also Brutes suck to fight, that’s right I said it! And I am extremely sensitive to evil monologueing. Almost ruined the Didact for me, had I not read the Greg Bear novels afterwards (Forerunner Trilogy for life!) I am glad Darin De Paul is getting a pay check though (he’s Mayor of BlizzCon don’t you know)
I’m here for the Infinity crew, not just Palmer. Another confession, Spartan Ops cutscenes was my first exposure to Halo. That’s quite different to traditional Halo, so the vast majority of fans are going to prefer and have nostalgia for the old stuff. I accept that. But I think what’s saddened me is that before I had thought there was room on the edges for me. In interviews 343 keep saying it is a follow on from what went before, and old fans will be able to pick up what’s been going on in the universe these past couple of years. But what I’m hearing is: lore scraps in terminals and collectables for some, reboot and killing aliens and not afraiding of anything for others.
I’m here for cheesy sci-fi action. Love the wider universe, and think the best stuff is outside the main games, so if 343 wants to play it extremely safe looking back at CE and focusing purely on Chief, fine. I’d actually come to terms with that as it’s what they’ve been saying and showing for the past few years. The games are where the conflict between Halo as narrative universe and capitalist product are most in tension. Microsoft needs this number of product shipped by x date or execs and shareholders won’t get their bonuses, after all. So if playing it safe is what they have to do, fine. I was just hoping for a bit more daring around the edges, maybe a little experimental DLC (and hope of hopes Palmer DLC).
They need a good solid Master Chief game at its base, fine, completely agree. But when they’re talking about following up with even more Master Chief adventures, I have concerns. When they talk about the game as a platform and that they will be developing it long after launch, I have concerns. When they talk of the much vaunted ray tracing going in after launch, I have concerns. It sounds like this game is going to be launched no matter how incomplete or broken, because they must make the holiday period and new console launch because everyone will die there will not be bonuses. I’ve heard people expressing concerns it’s going to be a Destiny game as a service, and I’m here going man I wish it were a Destiny (Destiny has room for lots of cool background characters). I think it’s going to be another Master Chief Collection, Sea of Thieves, or No Mans Sky. Love to be proved wrong, but yeah expectations are being carefully angled downwards for the actual game.  
Man gaming fandom is going to continue to be a tire fire.
So. Storywise. The bit I actually care about. My expectations are adjusted as follows:
Good: some lore scraps in the terminals and collectables
Neutral: Palmer, Infinity and other characters I like don’t show up at all
Bad: Infinity blew up so they can slow pan on Chief’s visor as he overlooks the wreckage
So there’s my salt. Anyway, now I’m just going to keep a casual eye on developments, and go back to gifing previous games and writing fanfic and being positive about what I like.

My Standard advice + FAQ
Interviewing
Q. "I have my interview in a week at X. Can you tell me how I should I prepare?"
A. Every company has a process that guides how many rounds they have, what questions they ask and what they look for. However, many younger companies/start-ups don't.
For the sought-after Big Tech and other famous firms, there are reams of mocks interviews, question banks, and overall guidance on the internet. If you walk into an Amazon interview not knowing their 14 leadership principles, that's on you.
For a lot of other firms, you can find guidance on interview questions on Glassdoor or Blind. Just google "X glassdoor interview questions" and it should turn up something.
In case that turns up nothing, you can always ask people in the company. Preferably, find mutual connections with people in the firm and get an introduction to someone in the team you're interviewing for. If you don't have any, you can send a cold LinkedIn message or email too, though the chances of a response are much lower. You have to avoid contacting people in your interview loop so that they don't end up in a conflict of interest situation.
And there's finally the easiest way. Ask the recruiter! Tech talent is short, companies want people to showcase their best selves during the interview and many recruiters tell the candidate what the next round will be about. So ask!
Referral
Q. Can you refer me to your company (Microsoft)?
A. Yes. My referral will mostly not make a difference. Not because I am specially hated by the universe but because jobs at a big firm like Microsoft are highly sought after, hundreds of people apply for every role and the hiring manager looks at all of them. When an employee does a referral, they just fill the form on your behalf and it enters the applicant pool with a "Referral" tag; but it's the same pool. The referrals might get noticed a bit more, but every resume does get a look nonetheless.
That said, if I know you, have worked with you, generally respect you or if you are a great fit for the job; I go way beyond doing a standard referral, I write the hiring manager an email telling them why you're awesome and vouch for you hard so that you get noticed. I do not do this for strangers who added me on LinkedIn 2 days ago.
Suitable job Openings
Q. "I am actively looking for a Product Manager/Program Manager role in Microsoft. Can you please help in case there are any suitable job openings matching my profile."
A. Stop making me determine job fit for you. The company jobs/careers page is your best bet for finding open positions in most companies. There are times of arbitrage when roles haven't been posted or widely disclosed, when asking someone if their team has a role helps. But that person will only help if they care about you or if you're rare/worth the effort. Dead end in most cases.

The wind in your hair felt nice compared to the cold weather you were used to. At this time of the year in most states, snow was basically all you could see. Other states—the hotter ones—didn’t have snow, but they were still pretty cold. It was a nice change of pace to feel the sun beating down on you with a warm breeze through your hair.
The environment was warm and welcoming, and you thought it was a good idea to have a picnic on top of a hill where you could overlook the park. The food was laid out in front of you, but you weren’t eating it. Everything seemed too perfect to be considered normal. Looking away from the scenery, you stared into the eyes of the one who was most connected to you. It’s been a while since she’s infiltrated your dreams, but you didn’t mind it much.
“How have you been?” Amara asked.
“Do you really want to know, or are you just making small talk?”
“Please don’t resent me,” she sighed.
“How can I when everyone is telling me you’re the bad guy?”
“All I want is to reunite my family. How is that bad?”
“And you have to do it with me?”
“Look, it took four of my nephews plus my own brother to put me away last time. Angels weren’t even created then. The whole power of Heaven against me isn’t going to go well. If I had you, I would be able to get what I want.”
“And what about what I want? I saw what Raphael did to his vessel. He left him in an almost vegetative state. How do I know you’re not going to do the same to me?”
“You want a family, don’t you? Children with Dean Winchester?”
“How do you know that?”
“Give me my family and I’ll give you yours. All I’m asking for is your help,” she sighed.
From one moment to the next, she went from calm and collected to alert and cautious.
“Amara, what’s wrong?” you wondered. She looked back before misting away in black smoke. A few seconds later, Anna stood in her place. “Anna?”
“Who were you just talking to?” she asks. By the shocked look on her face, she knew exactly who it was. However, there seemed to be no time since she got right to the chase. “I can’t find you.”
“Yeah, Castiel did this thing on our ribs,” you mentioned, rubbing the spot where he branded.
“Castiel, right,” she sighed. “Now, there’s a friend you can count on.”
“What?”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“Tell us what?”
“Where I’ve been. Of course not, why would he?” she scoffed.
“Anna, what’s going on? Where have you been?”
“Prison. Upstairs. All the torture, twice the self-righteousness.”
“That’s not like Castiel. Why would he have told us where you were?” you asked, standing up.
“Because he's the one who turned me in,” she revealed, causing you to look shocked at the news. “Don't look so shocked. He was always a good little soldier. Did anything under orders.”
“I didn't know. Are you okay?”
“No, and I don't have long. I broke out. Barely. They're looking for me. If they find me—”
“What do you need?”
“Meet me. You and the Winchesters. Two-two-five Industrial. Please just—”
The dream ended abruptly, and you shot out of bed, waking Dean who slept next to you. Whatever Anna was trying to say, she needed to get it out quickly, and the only person who could get you to where she’s at in such short notice was Castiel, who you prayed to immediately.
“What’s wrong?” Dean asked.
“It’s Anna. I think she’s in trouble,” you sighed, rubbing your eyes.

Castiel didn’t trust Anna so he didn’t want you three going there to talk to her. Instead, he went on his own to find out what she wanted, but he’s been gone for some time now. Sam and Dean were up and pacing, about to call for the angel once more when he appeared by the door. Almost immediately was he bombarded with questions and concerns, all of which he answered.
Apparently, Anna wanted to kill Sam because without him, then Lucifer won’t have a true vessel, then the apocalypse won’t happen, and everything can go back to normal. She disappeared in the middle of their conversation, and Castiel wanted to figure out where she was going and what her intentions were.
He was drawing something on the table in chalk, while ingredients were spread out on the table for the ritual he was going to perform.
“Really? Anna? I don't believe it,” Dean scoffed.
“It’s true,” the angel nodded.
“So, she's gone all Glenn Close, huh? That's awesome.”
“Who's Glenn Close?” Castiel asked, straightening up in confusion.
“No one, just this psycho bitch who likes to boil rabbits.”
“So, the plan to kill me, would it actually stop Satan?” Sam asked.
“No, Sam, stop it,” you sighed.
“Cas, what do you think? Does Anna have a point?” he asked after making eye contact with you for a few seconds.
“No. She's, uh, Glenn Close.”
“I don't get it. We're looking for the chick that wants to gank Sam. Why poke the bear?”
“Anna will keep trying. She won't give up until Sam is dead. So, we kill her first,” he shrugged, pouring oil into a bowl sitting on the table.
He began chanting in a language you weren’t familiar with, and when he was done, the bowl shoots out red flames. Castiel steps away from the table, leans on the back of a chair, closes his eyes, and breathes heavily.
“Castiel, are you okay?” you asked.
“I've found her.”
“Where is she?”
“Not where. When,” he straightened up. “It’s nineteen seventy-eight.”
“What?” Sam gasps, standing up to join his brother and you. “Why nineteen seventy-eight? I wasn't even born yet.”
“You won't be if she kills your parents.”
“Excuse me?”
“Anna can't get to you because of me. So, she's going after them.”
“Take us back right now,” Dean said in a stern tone.
“And deliver you right to Anna? I should go alone.”
“They're our parents. Cas, we're going.”
“It's not that easy.”
“Why not? Castiel, I get to see my mom again. Please,” you begged.
“Time travel was difficult even with the powers of heaven at my disposal.”
“So, what, you're like a Delorean without enough plutonium?” Dean asked.
“I don't understand that reference. But I'm telling you, taking this trip, with passengers no less, it'll weaken me.”
“They're our mom and dad. If we can save them, and not just from Anna—I mean if we can set things right, we have to try,” Dean urged.
“Castiel, draw from me. If you’re too weak, then use my powers to help you. I was able to at least hold off Lucifer for a little bit which means I’m really strong. Use me if you can’t do it alone.”
“If you’re sure,” he sighed.
“Of course, I am,” you nodded.
Sam and Dean got their duffel bags ready since they were going to be needing all kinds of angel-killing weapons. Once they were ready, Castiel made sure of it before he sent everyone back in time. It would be nice to see your mom once more, but you also needed to save Mary and John from the rouge angel.
“Ready?” Castiel asked.
“Not really,” Sam chuckled.
“Bend your knees,” Dean advised, and Sam thankfully listened to him.
Castiel placed his fingers on their foreheads, and you grabbed onto his arm in order for him to draw from your power. One moment you were in the motel room, and the next, you were in the middle of the street with cars honking at you. A really old car came rushing a you three, but when the driver noticed you, he slammed on his brakes and honked the horn. Jumping out of the way, you backed up only to have the same thing happen. Pulling the Winchesters to the sidewalk, you took a deep breath as the cars continued on their way.
“Did we make it?” Sam asked.
“Unless they're bringing Pintos back into production, I'd say yes,” Dean scoffed.
“Where is Castiel?” you asked, looking around.
From the corner of your eyes, you saw the angel with a bloody nose, on the ground behind a parked car. Rushing over to the angel, the Winchesters were hot on your heels.
“Castiel! Are you okay?” you asked, helping him sit up.
He groaned and blinked rapidly as he tried to sit up on his own.
“Take it easy. Take it easy. Are you alright?” Dean asked as he helped.
“I'm fine. I'm much better than I expected,” he nodded.
The next second, he leaned over, spit blood out of his mouth, and rolled his eyes to the back of his head. Without even thinking, your eyes turned blue, and you placed your hand on his forehead. A white light shined through his wounds and nose, but he didn’t wake up.
“Castiel!” you shook his shoulders.
Placing your hand by his mouth and nose, you felt his breath only slightly.
“He's breathing. Sort of. What do we do?” you asked.
“Come on, get him up. There’s a motel right here. I’ll take him, you find mom and dad,” Dean said, taking over.
He took Castiel inside the place without much trouble, and Sam began flipping through the phone book. Once he found the Winchesters, he ripped out the page and folded it. Dean came back out once he was done with a sigh.
“So, I paid for Cas for five nights up in the honeymoon suite. I told the manager, 'Do not disturb no matter what’. You know what he said to me? 'Yeah. Don't sweat it. Want to buy some dope?’ Dope. We ought to stick around here and buy some stock in Microsoft,” Dean chuckled.

“Yeah. Uh, the Winchesters. Four-eight-five Robintree,” Sam read, holding up the folded piece of paper.
“Let's go pop in on the folks,” Dean smiled.
“I really hope my mom is still around,” you sighed, walking with the Winchesters to go steal a car.

Looking back on Software Development in 2020 and forward to 2021
I think we can all agree 2020 sucked. Hopefully 2021 will be better.
I've been a remote worker for 13 years by choice but in 2020 I HAD TO DO IT because, well, most programmers and tech workers did. I wrote about how Remote work != Quarantine Work while our whole division and then the whole company moved back home! We were a fairly remote-friendly company before but I have to admit I didn't always think my coworkers had really deep empathy for the remote...until they, too, were forced to be remote.
Last week on the podcast, I got to speak with Amanda Silver. She's a CVP in the Microsoft Developer Division who has been coding and thinking deeply about coding for many years. She's leading the creation of tools like Visual Studio, Visual Code, Live Share, Code Spaces, IntelliCode, and other collaborative productivity products. She's always thinking about what coding will look like in 1, 5, and even 10+ years.
We talked about her thoughts on moving the division remote and whether it would slow us down. Would it change how we develop software? What about when everyone comes back? After talking to her about her thoughts on 2020 and where she thinks we're heading, I got to thinking myself and wanted to put those thoughts down.
2020 broke everything, and developers like to fix things
Somewhere in the spring as we started into lockdown, developers started making sites. Sites to track COVID, GitHub projects with scripts to scrape data and analyze it. Javascripters started making D3.js visualizations and codepen users started building on top of them. Bots on twitter would tweet out updates and parse new data.
When there's a problem - especially a scary or untenable one - developers run towards the challenge. Necessity breeds invention and 2020 was definitely a year where we were collectively reminded there was a bunch of stuff that was always possible, but we needed a push. Cameras and mics were upgraded, ring lights were purchased, home networks got fancier, and everyone who could called their ISP and got an upgraded plan. We could have done all this before, but why? Remote work happened for the first time in 2020, and I say that having worked remotely forever.
We HAVE to collaborate remotely now
Back in 2010 I spoke to PhDs at Microsoft Research about how people feel when they are remote and what they can do to be more connected. Ten years! Folks thought it was pretty "out there" but I sure needed my virtual cubicle buddy this year.
2020 accelerated what was possible with remote collaboration. I spent hours coding with Live Share, pushing text and coding context over the wire, not a ridiculous 4k worth of pixels. Having two cursors (mine and my friends) - or even 10! - in one Visual Studio seemed like magic. Even more magic is me pressing F5 and my coworker hitting their localhost and seeing our app running! We needed tech like this more than ever in 2020.
I heard one story where a company sent everyone home but folks had disparate desktops and laptops so they set up 100s of Virtual Desktops over a weekend so everyone was able to log into secure work systems from their home machines.
For us, since we use Github and Azure DevOps here in DeviDiv, our collaboration model is asynchronous and distributed whether we are in the office or not. Can you imagine everyone working remotely while using a locking source control system in 2020? I feel bad for those who are in that predicament.
Can something be BETTER remotely?
Many of us miss being in the same room with co-workers, and we will be together again one day, but are there some things that the constraint of being remote can make better? In the podcast episode Amanda said that our new hire bootcamp was so much better remotely!
She said (paraphrasing a bit):
We have a bootcamp for anybody who's newly started on the team. They actually fly out for two weeks. And the first week is introduction and the second week is our customer driven workshop. And our customer driven workshop is basically this really intense team project where you break up into groups of five to six people, and you're given a business assignment like - how could we double the number of Python developers using Visual Studio Code.
You're basically doing like stickies on the wall the entire week - that's how you collaborate. I've been so amazed that that has transitioned to be remote first. And it's better. It's better. That was a brainstorming process that I thought was only possible in person it's better.
When we moved remote, we had to essentially reboot the way that we thought about our meeting culture to actually make it much more inclusive. And if we go from 40 to 50% of the people participating to just 2 people participating, that's a huge, not only degradation, but you're wasting people's time. Right?
Now if we can actually take six people who've never met each other before and get them to work super collaboratively on a new problem area that they've never worked on before. It's incredible. And the thing that's also really awesome about it is they are forced by nature of the fact that this is remote to actually create it as digital content. Whereas in the beginning they would literally walk us through sticky notes on the wall and they had fantastic ideas, but it was really kind of somewhat unorganized and, and it was hard to be able to see and, and retain and share out afterwards what these incredible ideas were that they came up with.
But when remotely starts with this digital format by necessity because everyone is remote first, we actually now have all of these things archived. We can come back to them, we can go back and actually see, you know, what was the genesis of the thought and, and pursue a lot of these things that we really weren't being able to pursue previously.
Constraints breed innovation!
It was nice to be reminded that People are People
2020 normalized being a person. Having a boss welcome a sad child to sit with them during a meeting reminded me that, what, my boss is a person? With a life and kids? Having meetings while going for walks, talking about treadmill desks, and video called parties with family, and OMG when will this be over is the most horrible team building exercise ever.
It's forced us to rethink our group's culture, how our interpersonal dynamics work, how many meetings we have (let's have less), and it's given everyone the joy of somewhat flexible hours. We talk more now about 'is everyone in this meeting being heard?' than ever before. We use the "hand raising" tool in Teams to make sure all voices get a chance to speak.
If 2020 hadn’t happened, we may not have made these important leaps forward. MAYBE this would have happened by 2025 or 2030 but COVID was the pivot point that forced the issue.
