I love how Dream Team is canon and takes place after Frontiers and they said Murder of Sonic can be interpreted as canon too which would also have to take place after hence Sage. so with that it's already confirmed that Eggman hasn't stopped being a villain and is still evil, he hasn't become a full-time dad, and his life doesn't revolve around Sage confirmed already
it's over we got our answer and it's fucking great lol. I feel so free from the irrational nervousness I had just because the opposite was something so much of the fandom wanted, even though I know all the signs in Frontiers pointed to nothing about him changing. peace and love and joy my favorite character of all time is the same lovable villainous bastard he's always been 💜

so at the end of the trailer for sonic prime season 2 we saw something that looks like a new yoke version of metal sonic. but is that an actual counterpart of The metal sonic or is that a robot that somebody in new yoke built after meeting sonic. and if they Are the real metal sonic, i have to wonder what that means for other characters we haven't seen in the show at all yet... maybe hope isn't completely lost for blaze

actually on the topic of nightmares!!! i wonder if anyone in the cast has had nightmares related to the phantom ruby. that war lasted like six months after all!
Heh, I personally do feel that making the war last literally half a year was just far too long. It's quite a significant chunk of time for many characters... yet absolutely nobody is affected by it. Not physically, not mentally, not emotionally. And of course I understand this is a Sonic game and they're not gonna shown everyone gravely injured and with PTSD, but with six months I truly would have expected some consequences on the cast. If it had only been one or two months or so, it would have been easier for me to suspend my disbelief on this topic, I feel.
Regardless, to answer your question, it does make sense to me that characters would indeed have nightmares. Infinite killed like four or five people right in front of the Avatar, Eggman's Death Egg is filled with captured people and he is heavily implied to have murdered captives, Tails saw Sonic "die" before his eyes(?), the Resistance at the end of those six months was reduced to almost nothing... and then lost 80% of their forces in Operation Big Wave on top. And then they all nearly got scorched alive in the fake fun. It gives enough grounds for nightmares, also considering how absolutely insane Infinite's power is with the Ruby. So I would not be surprised if the cast is in some way affected by it and needs time to mentally recover from the events of the game; it's just not shown or indicated to us, basically.
#I have somewhat conflicted feelings on Forces#on the one hand I do quite like the game and gameplay and I love Infinite as a villain and I don't hate the plot at all#but on the other hand... I do feel that the execution is lacking‚ so to say#they wanted it to be very grandiose but couldn't deliver there because that is not how Sonic games really *work*‚ perchance?#in the games characters 99% of the time are not affected by what happens to them and especially not on a longer time span#but with a *six month* war it feels *impossible* to me that they are not affected by their circumstances#so then the entire world gets basically destroyed/terraformed towards Eggman's interests... and yet it will never show up again#and everyone honestly just shrugs it off like it never even happened#it's definitely a strength of Sonic characters that they *can* do that and I find it inspiring#and my disbelief luckily does not take away from my enjoyment of the game#but... yeah‚ haha. It's a situation where they could not have won anyway: the earlier plot drafts are glued together by narm galore instead#and those definitely tried to be more serious about it all#hmm... it makes me wonder how 'far you can go' to make an epic story wherein you still can expect the cast to not be affected so much#but I would say Sonic being captured for 6 months while Eggman destroys the planet and murders/captures the populace throughout is too far-#-considering the complete lack of engagement with those rather heavy/serious points and the timespan they took place in#but regardless this is a very incomprehensible ramble about my thoughts on Forces haha

A Sonic Boom Revisited Short Story:
"I'll Be Home for Christmas"
Written by @mama-qwerty with editing and inspiration from @multiisketch
Art by @multiisketch
Colors by @star-stages and @multiisketch
NOTE: This story is NON-CANON to the SBR comic itself and is purely for holiday fun! Please Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Twas the morning before Christmas and all through the lair, not a creature was stirring, not even–
"An eclair!" Cubot said, in an enthusiastic mood.
Orbot protested. "An elcair's not a creature, it's food!"
"Exactly!” said Cubot, hands on his hips. “That's why it ain't stirrin!"
Orbot scoffed. “Oh enough with your quips.”
The stockings were hung by the exhaust port with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be–
"Married!" Cubot shouted, sounding quite proud.
"Santa’s already married, for crying out loud.” Orbot sighed and shook his head in frustration. “Can you please be quiet and allow the narration?”
Quite. Anyway... the robots were nestled and charging in stations, while visions of sugar plums danc’d in their processing units.
"Hey," Cubot said, the word dragging out long. “Those words don’t rhyme, you’re doing it wrong!"
Tumblr media
Rhyming is hard, and not something that’s forced. So you’ll deal with my attempts, for better or worst.
The robots went silent, exchanging a look. It always seemed easy when reading the book. They returned to the tinsel hanging duties assigned, when in walked the dastardly Robo-Sonic, his boss close behind.
"I just don't understand, truly at all, why those rodents won’t fight!" said Dr. Eggman, standing tall.
“Because they’re losers who know they won’t win,” Robo-Sonic said, his voice confident, and edged with a grin. “Seriously, Boss, it’s the smartest thing they’ve done. Why would they fight when they know that we’ve won?”
“It’s the principle!” Eggman shouted, his hands clenched in fists. “If they won’t fight, then I won’t . . . won’t . . .”
He threw his hands up. “Ya know what? I’m not doing this rhyming thing. Nope.”
But–
“NO.” Eggman crossed his arms, his lips pulled into a tight line.
How are we gonna tell a Christmas story without that well known rhyming couplet setup?
“Much better, because we won’t be locked into short little oddly worded sentences for the sake of rhyming.”
Ouch.
“Go on,” Eggman said, giving his hand a dismissive flick. “Just let it flow naturally.”
Fine.
“Oh come now, don’t pout.”
I’m not pouting.
“Then go ‘not pout’ somewhere else so we can get on with things.”
“Geez, Boss,” Cubot said, shaking his head. “That’s not very Christmas-y.”
“Quiet down, you imbecile, or I’ll remove your head.”
“That rhymed,” Orbot said with a shrug. “Although you technically rhymed ‘head’ with ‘head’.”
“Nevermind!” Eggman said, moving to his console and flicking some switches. The monitor along the back wall flared to life and scenes from the village dominated the screen. “As I was saying, if those rodents won’t fight me, I won’t get a good workout for my various inventions.”
Robo-Sonic turned to him. “So?”
“So, fighting so-called heroes is the best way for villains to work the kinks out of their dastardly plans and evil robots. It’s the first thing they teach you in villain college.” He turned suddenly, his voice edged with defensive anger. “Which I totally graduated from, thank you very much.”
Robo-Sonic flicked his ocular LEDs toward the ceiling. “Okay, so why won’t they fight? Other than the obvious reason that they’ll lose, I mean.”
Eggman tapped a few places on his control panel and twisted a dial. “I don’t know. But we’ll find out soon enough.
The screen flickered and centered on Meh Burger where Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Sticks sat at a table.
“Are we still going to your place for Christmas Eve, Amy?” Tails asked. He poked at his burger. “It may be a good way to take our minds off . . . you know.”
“The fact that Sonic’s been turned into a glorified Eggman bot who hates us and wants to pound us into the dirt?” Knuckles asked, his voice low and frustrated. The others looked at him, their expressions a combination of annoyed and hurt. “What? I’m just summing it up in case you forgot.”
“We didn’t.” Tails’ ears flicked backward, and he looked away.
Knuckles seemed to sense he’d really stepped in it, and turned his attention back to his half-eaten burger. He let out a sigh, his shoulders dropping. “Right. Right. Sorry.”
“I don’t know if I should bother this year. It won’t be the same without Sonic,” Amy said, pushing her burger away and resting her crossed arms on the table. “We always baked cookies together.” A little smile curled her lips. “When he wasn’t trying to eat the batter, that is.”
“We’d always make popcorn strands,” Knuckles said, shaking his head with a smile. “That was a lot of fun.”
“Yeah.” Tails pushed his burger away, fiddling with his gloves. “We would trim the tree together. The lights were always my favorite part, and every year we’d fight over who put the star on top.” His ears flicked back. “This year was his turn.”
Silence fell over the group. Sticks looked between the others.
“Well I say we don’t let this get us down!” she said, pounding her fists on the table. “I say we get together and have the best Christmas Eve ever! We’ll show that Eggman and his new little robot henchman that they can’t stifle our spirits!”
She turned directly toward the camera filming them and shook her fist.
“YA HEAR THAT, YOU BIG CLOD! WE AIN’T BENDING!”
In the lair, Eggman let out a little yelp before cutting the feed, the screen going black. “That badger’s pretty astute for someone who thinks her doorknobs are alien spies.”
“Who’s she calling a henchman?” Robo-Sonic said, hands clenching into fists.
Eggman absently rubbed his chin with a hand. “Quiet, you.”
“Yes, Boss.”
Eggman’s brow furrowed slightly as he paced back and forth before the console. “Hmm . . . so the rodents are feeling all sad because their little blue rat is now my number two. That sadness is preventing them from really bringing their A-game during battles with me.”
“Perhaps you could offer to return Robo-Sonic to them for Christmas Eve,” Orbot suggested, hovering closer. “That way they can feel more motivated to fight when next you appear.”
Eggman whirled on him. “Are you insane? You’re suggesting I simply give Robo-Sonic over to those insipid rodents? All because they miss him so much?”
Orbot flinched back, as Robo-Sonic looked on, shaking his head.
“Oh, I know!” Eggman said, holding a finger up. “Maybe I’ll be a gracious arch-nemesis and offer to let Robo-Sonic fraternise with them for Christmas Eve, just to refuel the hope of getting their friend back and reignite that fighting spirit, before dashing their misplaced hopes to bits during my next attack! Ho ho, that is brilliant!”
“Yes, sir, very clever,” Orbot said with a sigh.
“Hey now,” Robo-Sonic said, hands on hips. “Who says I want to go back and ‘fraternise’ with those losers?”
Eggman turned to him, brows furrowed. “You’ll go and you’ll play nice. Because while you’re there you’re going to collect any information you can on weaknesses–other than you, of course–or soft spots I can use to my advantage in future battles.”
Robo-Sonic threw his hands up in exasperation. “But I already know their weaknesses and soft spots! I can tell you that right now!”
Eggman held up a hand. “Upp upp upp! Everyone knows that Christmas is when people show their softer sides and reveal hidden thoughts and desires no one knows the rest of the year. It goes hand in hand with Christmas miracles, holiday spirit and putting differences aside to show that not everyone’s all bad and all that touchy feely stuff.”
The doctor went to his desk, yanked open a drawer, and fished around for a moment before pulling out a crumpled card. He scribbled something inside, stuffed it into an envelope, and stepped over to slap it onto Robo-Sonic’s hands.
“There you are,” he said, patting the robot on the top of his rocket booster. “Off you go. Spread holiday cheer with your ex-friends, and then come back here and dish on the gossip you learn.”
Robo-Sonic heaved the robot equivalent of a sigh, before turning and heading toward the door.
“OH WAIT!”
He turned back to see Eggman digging through another drawer, before pulling something out and rushing over to him. The doctor slapped a gift sticker right above Robo-Sonic’s visor and adjusted a Santa hat on top of his head.
“There!” Eggman said, stepping back and perching his hands on his hips. “Ooh, you look so festive!” He waved in a dismissive manner. “Okay, get outta here. Go be merry and trim the tinsel and ginger the bread or whatever it is you people do during the holidays. Shoo!”
With an electronic groan, Robo-Sonic turned and drudged away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Screams drew Amy from her book, and she hurried out of her house, hammer in hand. The chatter from her communicator indicated the others were on their way to investigate the trouble, too.
She hoped it wasn’t Eggman. While she never liked fighting Eggman in the past, at least it had been a little fun. Now it was painful. Seeing what the man had done to Sonic hurt her heart. And she couldn’t bring herself to hurt him, even if he was a robot now, and had no qualms on hurting them.
And, based on how lackluster the fights were when Eggman did attack, the others felt the same way.
As she neared the center of the village–seriously, everything always seemed to happen right in the middle of town–she found the chaos somewhat comforting. It was familiar and a good fight with the Lightning Bolt Society, or Barker, or even Shadow may help dissipate some of the anxiety that had twisted her stomach since Sonic changed.
When the fleeing villagers scattered, she skidded to a halt.
Sonic was standing in the middle of the town, arms crossed, and wearing a . . . Santa hat?
A quick flick of her eyes caught no sign of Eggman himself or any other attacking robots. Sonic–Robo-Sonic, she reminded herself–stood with his back to her, tapping his foot in that familiar impatient way that always made him look like he was waiting for a bus that was fifteen minutes late.
“Amy!”
Knuckles’ voice called out. Both she and Robo-Sonic turned to see him rushing over to her. He stopped a step in front of her, taking up a defensive stance, fists at the ready.
“Where’s Eggman?” the echidna asked, his brow furrowed and voice uncharacteristically serious. He didn’t like fighting Son–ROBO-Sonic any more than Amy did, and preferred to head straight for the doctor when attacks happened.
The quicker they took out the doc, the quicker he retreated and took the robot version of their friend with him.
“I don’t know,” she said, gripping her hammer tightly. “All I see is him.”
Tails and Sticks arrived soon after, each wearing similar expressions of confusion.
“This isn’t like Eggman,” Tails said, holding his wrench before him like a staff. “He doesn’t usually send robots without being there himself to gloat and claim early victories.”
“Finally,” Robo-Sonic said, rolling his head back in a familiar expression of exasperation. “You’re all here. Cripes, take a little longer, why don’tcha. It’s not like I can die of old age or anything.”
“What do you want?” Knuckles all but growled, baring his fangs. “It’s Christmas Eve. Can’t you take the holidays off from being a jerk?”
Robo-Sonic mostly ignored him and stalked forward. Knuckles threw an arm out, keeping Amy back. When the robot hedgehog stopped before them, he reached into his metal quills and pulled out an envelope. He thrust it forward, toward Amy, and Knuckles tensed.
Everything seemed to stop in that moment. Amy flicked her eyes from Robo-Sonic’s ocular visor, to the little gift sticker attached to his forehead, right below the brim of the Santa hat. Instead of a “To” and “From” note, it bore Eggman’s logo, as if he’d branded the robot before sending him to the village.
Her eyes then dropped to the envelope in his hand. When she made no move to reach for it, Robo-Sonic uttered what sounded like a sigh.
“Just take it, Ames.”
Tumblr media
She flinched at the familiar nickname coming from a digital voice box. After a moment, she gently pushed Knuckles’ arm to the side, and plucked the envelope from Robo-Sonic’s hand. Keeping her eyes on the robotic hedgehog, she tore it open, before looking down as she pulled a battered card from the paper.
The front showed an image of Eggman dressed in a Santa suit, Cubot and Orbot beside him with little antlers on their heads. He had a large sack thrown over his shoulder. Above him read “Evil Season’s Greetings!”
She rolled her eyes.
Inside, she found a handwritten note, undoubtedly from Eggman himself.
"Dear Rodents,
Since you insist on being frustratingly avoidant when fighting my newest bestie Robo-Sonic, I have deemed it acceptable to allow him to be returned to you for 24 hours. Make it count and bring your A-Game to the next fight! Happy Holidays!
Love, Dr. Eggman."
Amy reread the note three times, before flicking her eyes back up to Robo-Sonic. He stood with his arms crossed and he, and Knuckles who also stood with his arms crossed, seemed to be having a glaring contest.
“So, wait,” she said, drawing their attention. “You’re here to spend Christmas Eve with us?”
Robo-Sonic heaved an electronic sigh. “Apparently.”
Amy exchanged a look with Tails.
“You don’t actually expect us to believe this, do you?” the fox said, hands on hips. “Like we’re supposed to just throw our arms open and pretend like everything’s normal?”
“I think he’s here to spy on us,” Sticks said, eyes narrowed and flicking back and forth. “He’s here to discover our deepest secrets, our hidden hopes and dreams!”
“Not my eggnog recipe!” Knuckles cried, hands to the side of his head.
“Knuckles, that’s just milk and eggs, mostly,” Amy said with a sigh.
He cast her a raised eyebrow. “Eggs?”
“Nevermind.”
“Look,” Robo-Sonic said, holding his hands up. “As stimulating as this conversation is, I don’t wanna be here any more than you want me here. But the boss said you get me for 24 hours and the clock’s ticking, so, whatever you wanna do with that time is on your head. If you want to just stand here and argue about it, be my guest.”
The group exchanged looks again. Amy gave him a tight little smile.
“‘Scuse us for a minute.”
She motioned for the others to follow her a few feet away, and lowered into a huddle.
“This is a trick,” Knuckles said, looking over his shoulder toward Robo-Sonic. “No way he’s not here for evil reasons.”
“I hate to admit it, but I agree,” Tails said, shaking his head. “Sonic’s not our friend anymore. As much as I want to believe he’s here because he wants to be, I think this is some kind of trap.”
“Of course it’s a trap!” Sticks said, gripping her boomerang tightly. “It’s obvious he’s here to steal our Christmas spirit, and maybe even all our decorations and presents and even our last can of Who Hash!”
Tails gave her a raised eyebrow. “Our what?”
“Nothin’.” Sticks narrowed her eyes, looking around suspiciously. “I’ve said too much.”
“Okay, look,” Amy said, drawing their attention. “I don’t think he’s here of his own free will either. But maybe we can use this to our advantage. If we do things we used to do with Sonic on past Christmases, maybe he’ll remember who he really is and come back to us!”
Tails shot a look over at Robo-Sonic, who was giving the evil eye . . . well, evil LED to any villagers who came too near. “I dunno, Amy . . .”
“C’mon Tails, we have to try.”
The others looked at her before exchanging a glance between themselves. Finally, they turned back and nodded. Although, they didn’t look very happy or sure about it.
She didn’t care. If there was a chance to get her . . . their Sonic back, she’d take it. As slim as it was.
She nodded back, before standing upright and moving toward the robot hedgehog once again. Knuckles was right next to her. She could feel how tense he was.
“Okay, Son–I mean, Robo-Sonic,” she said, stopping with her hands on her hips. “If you’re gonna be here, there are going to be a few rules.” She counted off on her fingers. “Rule number one, no fighting. Rule number two, no insulting us. Rule number three, you have to actually participate and not simply sit and sulk the whole time.”
His ocular LEDs narrowed for a moment. “And if I refuse these stupid rules?”
Amy shrugged. “Then we’ll just send you back to Eggman’s. You’ll have failed your mission and ruined Christmas for your new ‘boss’.”
He stood and glared at her for a long moment, before rolling his head to the side. “Fine.”
A smile curled her lips. “Good.” She clapped her hands together, giving a little squeal of excitement. “Oh, this will be fun!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was not, in fact, ‘fun’.
It had been hours. Hours of trying to have a normal Christmas Eve.
They’d all gathered at Amy’s house, as they did every year. She hadn’t been in a very festive mood after everything that had happened with Sonic, so the house wasn’t as decorated as she normally did. Knuckles and Sticks had helped pull her decorations out of storage, working to create a more appropriate holiday atmosphere, as Tails set about trimming the tree.
Supper was awkward. She’d made everyone’s favorite. Even the sweet potato chili dogs Sonic liked. But, being a robot now, he couldn’t eat them.
Okay, no problem, she could work around that.
But he spent the entire time glaring at Knuckles, who glared right back. Amy had shot the echidna a warning glance, and he’d sheepishly turned his eyes away, but the mood had been set.
After supper, she cleaned up the dishes as Tails helped Knuckles make popcorn for this year’s garlands. With a little coaxing, Amy had encouraged Knuckles to try and follow his tradition with Robo-Sonic.
It didn’t go well.
Robo-Sonic couldn’t string the popcorn before his metal fingers crushed the kernels. After five minutes, the floor around him was littered with broken bits of popcorn. Knuckles, for his part, tried to extend a hand of friendship, so to speak, citing that he knew what it was like to deal with more strength than you need most of the time. He tried to help Robo-Sonic pull it back so he could work with the popcorn without crushing it.
Things only went further south when Robo-Sonic revealed, in a fit of frustration stemming from the continued crunching of the kernels, that he never liked making the garlands–a waste of perfectly good popcorn, he claimed–and only did it so Knuckles wouldn’t look like an idiot doing it by himself.
The echidna gasped, eyes wide, before running from the room in tears. “Not cool, Robo-Sonic!”
Sticks fared a little better. She was always suspicious of wrapped presents–”You don’t know what’s inside! It’s not safe!”--so Robo-Sonic used his scanners to examine every one. He announced, loudly, what each box contained. This soothed the badger’s suspicions, until he announced what the gifts she’d brought held.
“Those boxes were supposed to be lead lined! X-ray proof! So’s the aliens couldn’t see what I got and report my preferences and kindness to their leaders, taking me hostage when they come to rule!”
And off she went, presumably to find whomever had sold her the supposedly impervious boxes, and deal some angry feral badger damage to them.
Tails was hit worst. He had brought the tree decorations, and hoped to have his and Sonic’s tradition at least somewhat salvaged. It started okay, but when it was time to put the lights up, Robo-Sonic took them from the fox and wrapped them around the tree in three seconds flat.
“Oh,” Tails said, ears flicking back. “We usually do that together.”
Robo-Sonic shrugged. “It’s not exactly a two-man job, kid. It’s done, now.”
“Right.” Tails reached across himself to tightly grip his arm. “G-good job.”
The fox quietly left soon after.
That left Amy.
She tried. She really did.
She pulled out the ingredients for the cookies she and Sonic baked every year. But there was no laughter as they mixed the ingredients together. No trying to keep him from dipping his fingers into the batter. No slapping his hands away as she tried to roll out the dough.
Robo-Sonic was focused and efficient. The cookies went in without issue.
“You’re really not him anymore, are you?” she asked, her voice soft.
He turned to her, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m better.”
She sighed, her shoulders slumping. “No. No you’re not.”
Amy turned, hoping to be out of the house before the first tears fell.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robo-Sonic watched her leave, just like all the others had left.
He didn’t care. The less he had to deal with these losers, the better. He was only here because Eggman practically ordered him to be. He wasn’t enjoying this. He didn’t care about these stupid traditions and little holiday scenes the others insisted on.
He should leave. They all left, so apparently they didn’t care if he was here or not. He should just go back to Eggman’s lair, tell him the mission was a failure because these rodents couldn’t accept that he wasn’t the weak loser they remembered. They’d have a good laugh at the overly sentimental nature of these fools and that would be that.
He took a few steps toward the door, intending to do just that.
Then he stopped.
Turned and watched the oven timer tick down.
Less than ten minutes before the cookies were done. There was no one else in the house. He had no idea when they’d be back.
If he left and they didn’t return for a long time after, the cookies would burn.
The house might burn.
If these losers wouldn’t give him a decent fight because they were ‘sad’ about his change (his improvement), then they certainly wouldn’t be up for any challenging battles should Amy’s house burn down on Christmas Eve.
He could wait ten minutes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This is worse than when we thought he was gone,” Tails said, curling his namesakes around himself. He let out a long sigh. “This feels like a cruel joke.”
The group had met up near Sonic’s old shack. Knuckles stood with his back to the porch post, arms crossed. Tails sat on the front steps, staring out into the ocean as the waves licked the beach below. Sticks sat on the ground nearby, legs crossed beneath her, an angry pout on her face.
And Amy stood a little apart from them, staring into Sonic’s shack. The moon was full tonight, and lit the area enough to see.
The shack stood dark and empty, like it had since Sonic was changed.
“I’m sorry guys,” she said, her voice soft. “I thought . . . I thought if he was in a familiar place, if he was surrounded by his friends, doing things he loved, then he’d remember.”
“It was a nice try, Ames,” Knuckles said, rubbing a hand over his face. “But he’s not him anymore.”
She pulled her lips tight. “No. I guess he’s not.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Popcorn was strewn all over the floor. Some were crunched from being stepped on, but most broken because of his metal fingers.
He looked down at his fingers now.
Sharp and cold. He couldn’t really feel anything now. Oh sure, there were pressure points on the outside plating, giving him the approximate sensation of ‘touch’. But he couldn’t feel.
The fingers curled into a fist.
Nevermind.
That wasn’t important. He was better. Stronger.
His LEDs flicked back down to the floor.
It wouldn’t be fair to leave Amy to clean up this mess, and he knew Knuckles likely wouldn’t help. Seemed a waste to throw out all that popcorn, though.
He checked his internal clock. Seven more minutes until the cookies were done.
He had time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“He didn’t even try,” Amy said, moving to sit next to Tails. She pulled her legs up and hugged her knees. “He said he would try and he didn’t.”
“Actually,” Tails said, rubbing the back of his neck with a hand. “He said he wouldn’t fight, insult us, or sulk. That’s not really the same thing as trying.”
“But he promised he’d participate!” she said, and even to her own ears it sounded ridiculous. “He . . . he promised.”
“I guess he technically did participate,” Knuckles said with a shrug. “He was just being an irritable and impatient jerk about it.”
“On the bright side,” Sticks said, tilting her head to the side. “He did reveal a horrible injustice done to me by those shysters who sold me those boxes. I made sure they wouldn’t cheat anyone else like that!”
The others sighed, the mood not exactly feeling any lighter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robo-Sonic stood before the tree. The popcorn was all cleaned up, and now he stood with his arms crossed, staring at the wrapped presents strewn about, where Sticks had let them drop as he’d examined each one.
With a soft electronic sigh, he bent to gather them, stacking them neatly.
He picked up the final two, which were identically shaped, only with different wrapping. One was addressed to Tails, the other to him.
Well, to the weaker version of him, anyway.
He’d scanned them before, when Sticks had requested, and discovered they held matching scarves. Yellow for him, blue for Tails.
Probably hand crocheted by Amy herself. She liked to do that kind of thing.
He didn’t know why she bothered. That took a lot of time; it was easier to simply buy a scarf. They weren’t that expensive, really.
He stared at the boxes for a long moment, before placing them on the stack.
Glancing up, he flicked his LEDs over the tree at the lights he’d strung earlier.
They bothered him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I just . . .” Amy said, burying her face in her hands. “I hoped there was something left of him. Something that showed our Sonic was still in there.”
Silence answered her. It hung heavy before Tails gave a little sigh, reaching over to lay a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“I did too, Amy. I really did. He’s . . . he was my best friend. The idea that he’s gone is . . . well, it’s hard to accept.”
She nodded. “It’s so strange. He seems so much like the Sonic we remember, but . . . not.” She sighed, a harsh, frustrated sound. “I wish Eggman hadn’t sent him here. It’s making everything worse.”
Tails’ hand gripped her a little tighter. Knuckles moved to sit on her other side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
“We could pay Eggman a visit and deck his halls, if that would make you feel better,” he said, a little smile curling one side of his mouth. “Want me to leave a knuckle sandwich in his stocking?”
Amy gave a soft giggle, shaking her head. “As tempting as that is, I don’t want to ruin anything any more than it already is. It’s bad enough that–” She gasped, her eyes going wide. “THE COOKIES! I completely forgot about them!”
She shot to her feet and ran toward her house with the others close behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh no oh no oh no!” Amy nearly whined as she burst into her kitchen. She expected a house full of black smoke, possibly even flames shooting from her oven, but she stopped dead when there was no oppressive heat of an uncontrolled fire, no choking smoke threatening to smother her. “What?”
The others screeched to a halt behind her, piling up and nearly knocking her over.
The scene that met them was one she would not have believed just fifteen minutes ago.
Robo-Sonic was pulling the cookie sheets from the oven. He turned and placed them on towels he’d set out to protect her counters, before looking up and finding himself with company.
“Well look who decided to finally show back up,” he said, flicking the oven off and turning to plant his hands on his hips. “Figures you guys would all take off and leave me to do all the clean up.”
Silence answered him as the others stared. Amy’s gaze fell to the cookies currently cooling on her counter. “You . . . you stayed to take them out?”
He shrugged. “Boss said I had to stay, so I stayed. I’m used to picking up the slack for you los–” He caught himself. He’d promised not to insult them. “You left. The cookies were done. I pulled ‘em out. The end.”
Amy stared. This . . . this wasn’t what she expected.
“Hey,” Knuckles said, pointing to the other counter. “What are those?”
All eyes turned to a plate stacked with popcorn balls. Robo-Sonic shrugged as he pulled them over to place on the center island counter behind the cooling cookies.
“Ames would have had a fit if I threw away perfectly good popcorn,” he said, stepping back to lean against the counter. “So I made those.”
“Huh, that’s weird.” Knuckles stepped forward to pick up one of the popcorn balls. “How did you get the string to do that?” He took a bite, his eyes lighting up. “Hey! That’s really good! And no string to get stuck in my teeth!”
Robo-Sonic shrugged again. “Amy always has a bag of marshmallows hidden away. Thinks I don’t know about it. She uses them to sweeten her coffee. Which I always thought was gross, but whatever. Figured I’d use ‘em to make something better than those stupid garlands.”
Amy blinked. Sonic would regularly raid her cabinets, so it wasn’t a surprise he knew about her secret mallow stash, but the way he was talking . . . the things he did while they were gone . . .
This was absolutely not what she expected.
“Hey, what happened to the tree?” Tails’ voice cut through her musings. They looked into the living room where the tree stood dark. “Where are the lights?”
“Took ‘em off.” Robo-Sonic’s voice sounded almost bored, like there was an implied shrug even if his shoulders didn’t move. “They were bugging me. Not strung right. Some spots had the same colored lights all bunched up. I’m not good with that kinda detail stuff.”
More silence, and Amy dared to hope. Dared to think that her Sonic, their Sonic, really was still in there.
“Do you . . .” Tails started, his voice small and shaky. “Do you want to try again? I can make sure the colors are adequately distributed this time.”
Robo-Sonic stood still for a moment, as though contemplating. Amy expected a sharp retort. An annoyed “Fine” or “Whatever”.
But instead, the robot offered a simple, “Sure.”
A little smile curled her lips.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just before midnight.
Wrapping paper was strewn about, tossed carelessly as the annual gift exchange had taken place. The gang sat on the floor before the tree–now properly trimmed and lit, thanks to Tails’ careful calculations of the optimal placement of the various colored lights–with the star perched atop. Robo-Sonic had placed it there, in keeping with his and Tails’ tradition.
Now soft snores floated over the living room. Sticks, Knuckles, and Tails were fast asleep, their gifts piled nearby, while Amy and Robo-Sonic sat a little further away, their backs against the couch.
Amy wanted to break the silence. Needed to break it. The longer they sat like that, the longer it went without at least trying to get through to him, the more she’d beat herself up over it later.
This was the perfect chance to try and bring him around. To try and reach the Sonic she knew was still in there.
After another moment of hesitation, she cleared her throat.
“I suppose I need to send a thank you note to Eggman,” she said, her voice soft. “For letting you come tonight.”
He didn’t respond for a moment. “You always were a stickler for manners.”
She swallowed, turning her head away slightly. The familiarity he spoke with. He knew her. As much as she tried to convince herself that he wasn’t any different from Metal Sonic, that he was just some robot who’d copied Sonic’s personality . . . she couldn’t fully believe that.
She spared another glance in his direction. The yellow scarf she’d crocheted him was fastened around his neck. When he and Tails had opened those gifts he’d hesitated before putting it on, but finally tied it in place, much to Tails’ delight. Sonic never looked right without that trademark scarf around his neck.
The color contrasted with the red Santa hat still perched on his head. Her eyes flicked back to that gift label above his visor. Eggman’s logo seemed to glare at her, a stark reminder that he was here on borrowed time.
Another silent moment passed, and she turned away again. When she spoke, her voice was quieter. Hardly above a whisper.
“Stay.”
“No.”
The response was immediate. He didn’t even consider it.
“Why?” She turned back to him sharply, her tone pleading. “Why do you hate us so much?”
He turned his head away from her for a moment, before turning back. “Because you’re weak.”
“We’re stronger together.” She turned to him more fully and tried to pull back the pleading tone. “We were always stronger with you.”
“I can’t carry the whole team, Ames,” he said, his tone hard. “I can’t do what needs done if I’m worrying about the rest of you.”
“What are you talking about?” Amy said, and hated how pathetic her voice sounded even to her own ears. “Doing what needs done? What needs done is keeping Eggman from ruining everything, from destroying everything we love. We did that! And now you’re helping him. I just . . . I don’t understand.”
He didn’t respond right away, instead looking over where the others slept. Amy watched him for a few moments, before turning away when she decided he likely wasn’t going to answer.
“Sometimes protection isn’t just about bashing some bots and calling it a day,” he said, his voice softer. “Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to focus on the bigger picture.”
She stared at him, her brows furrowed. “What’s the bigger picture?”
He went quiet again, and this time it felt more final. Like whatever information she was going to get out of him had been said.
The two sat there in silence for a long time. Finally, Amy spoke, her voice a whisper.
“Merry Christmas, Sonic.”
He didn’t respond.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Time ticked on. Robo-Sonic watched the others sleep. He didn’t need to sleep anymore, although he sometimes went into standby mode. Not a ‘sleep’ in the traditional sense, but something that let him kind of ‘drift’.
Beside him, Amy’s breathing evened out, changing to a deeper, slower rhythm. He turned and found her head tilted against the couch, eyes closed, and mouth slightly open.
He watched her for a long moment.
Moving before he even knew he was, Robo-Sonic stood and gently lifted her, placing her on the couch and positioning a pillow beneath her head. She stirred slightly, and he froze, before she settled back into a comfortable position, her breathing deepening.
Pulling the afghan from the back of the couch, he draped it over her, tucking her in.
“Merry Christmas, Ames.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Morning.
The sun filtered in through the windows, pulling Amy from her sleep. She sat up and stretched, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she got her bearings. It took a moment before the events of last night caught up with her, and she looked around, catching no sign of Robo-Sonic.
He must have gone back to Eggman’s.
With a sigh, she flipped the afghan back, preparing to head to the kitchen to start breakfast before the others woke. That’s when her eyes landed on a small stack of gifts on the coffee table, still unopened.
Her brow furrowed. That was odd. She could have sworn they’d opened all the presents last night.
Moving closer, she immediately recognized the sloppy, somewhat hurried wrapping style of one Sonic the Hedgehog.
She distinctly remembered helping Sonic pick out gifts months ago, in an attempt to keep him from being caught empty-handed come Christmas Eve. (Something that had happened on more than one occasion.) He must have wrapped them to have them done and ready back then.
But how . . .
Her eyes went wide.
Robo-Sonic must have gone back to Sonic’s shack and brought them here after she’d fallen asleep.
A little smile curled her lips. Her heart felt warmer than it had in months.
She had hope again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ah, the blue rat bot returns!” Eggman said. He turned from the breakfast table, still dressed in his long underwear. “How went the whole ‘give your ex-friends false hope so they’ll fight me with more gusto’ plan?”
Robo-Sonic shrugged. “Fine.”
Eggman frowned. “Fine? That’s it? Just ‘fine’?”
Another shrug from the bot. “Yeah? Not sure what you want me to say.”
“Well, you could say that they spent the night bemoaning my successful plan to turn you into a robot; or that they tried to convince you to be some kind of double agent to get the goods on me in secret; or that they tried to appeal to your non-existent sense of loyalty to them in combination with the ‘spirit of Christmas’ to cast off your allegiance to me and rejoin them in their constant, infuriating destruction of every bot I painstakingly create!”
Robo-Sonic waved a hand. “Yeah, sure, okay.”
Eggman slammed his fists on the table, sending the silverware clattering. “Oh, you are just as infuriating now as you were when you were flesh and fur! I thought you were going to bring back some gossip or embarrassing tales of what happened!”
“What can I tell ya, Boss,” the robot said as he began to wander off. “Just a boring Christmas Eve. Same old, same old. Just like all the others.”
Eggman scowled. “Then what’s with the scarf?”
Robo-Sonic froze. The scarf. He’d forgotten he had it on. “What about it?”
The doctor smirked. “Seems a little sentimental, don’t you think? A lovingly hand knitted scarf from your little girlfriend.”
Robo-Sonic turned sharply, red LEDs narrowed. “She’s not my girlfriend, and it’s crocheted.”
Eggman scoffed. “My, my. Aren’t we touchy?”
The robot hedgehog uttered a little growl, before stalking toward the doctor. He yanked the scarf off his neck and slapped it on the table. “Whatever. I don’t need it.”
Eggman furrowed his brow. “Are you sure nothing happened back there?”
Robo-Sonic let out a soft scoff as he turned and walked away. “Nothing worth reporting.”
Eggman watched him go with a frown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robo-Sonic walked down a long hallway, the walls a polished steel here. He pushed the thoughts of last night away.
It was just a mission. He was sent there to spy. To gather intel. To give false hope so those losers would fight harder when he and Eggman attacked next.
Because if they fought harder, they got stronger. They needed to be stronger.
He only acted the way he did last night to foster that sense of hope. That he was still the Sonic they remembered.
That was the only reason.
His hand curled into a fist.
The only reason.
But that scarf . . .
A voice in the back of his mind whispered. Said things he knew weren’t true. Tried to make him soft. Make him weak.
He stopped and turned to face one of the walls. They were polished to a near mirror finish. He stared at his reflection. The gift label was still stuck to his forehead and that stupid Santa hat still perched on his metal quills.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
He almost saw the hedgehog he once was.
With a growl, he yanked the hat off and tossed it to the ground, before tearing the sticker from above his visor. It shredded, leaving behind sticky paper strips. Figures Eggman would have the cheapest, most residue-y stickers on hand.
Last night had been a mistake. He shouldn’t have gone.
Uttering a growl that bordered on a yell, Robo-Sonic drew his fist back and punched the wall, leaving a deep dent in the metal at the impact.
Tumblr media
“No more weakness. You had your chance. You failed. Now it’s my turn.”
Robo-Sonic withdrew his hand from the crumpled metal, and continued along his way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Well, that was anticlimactic,” Eggman said after Robo-Sonic had walked away. He slumped against the table with his chin in his hand.
Don’t pout.
“I’m not pouting!”
Seems a good place to end things, doncha think?
Eggman let out a frustrated grunt. “You wanna do the thing, don’t you?”
Wouldn’t be a Christmas story without it.
A long sigh. “Fine.”
And with Eggman pouting from not getting his way, Happy Christmas to all and to all a good day.
“I’m not pouting!”
Hush.
Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, and Happy Holidays to all!

"If it helps, one of the many scenarios my brain likes to twist around is imagining Sonic's perspective of No Cracks In A Closed Loop (and I adore Tails getting to be a badass and pulling off the impossible, too- my brain just likes to spin on the angst sometimes)" - @manynerdthings
A/N: So I was inspired...
I think it's safe to say this helped a lot xD Thank you, manynerdthings!
This is a continuation of my fic "No Cracks in a Closed Loop"
No Cracks in a Closed Loop — Sonic's Side
"Sonic."
That single word—no, just the voice alone—was enough to cut through the adrenaline rush as pure chaos energy sang through his veins and ignited every nerve with its spark. In a flash of light and sound, Super Sonic punched a hole through the Starfall-titan-wanna-be by using his own body as a projectile. A cocky grin cut across his muzzle as it wobbled in place, setting its sights on him instead of the city it had been about to level; its laser cannons aimed directly at the fault line.
This fight wouldn't last twenty seconds. They'd already won.
"What's up, partner?" Sonic said into the comm as he shot skyward.
The streak of gold drew the mech's cannon higher, until it cleared the tips of skyscrapers and nearby mountaintops by the time it shot at him. The laser's heat didn't even singe his fur, firing at full power into the stratosphere instead of drilling deep into the crust of the planet. It zinged past the satellite Tails was communicating from, but Super Sonic's gaze didn't linger on it for more than half a second—already more than certain it was out of the laser's range. Speeding through the air, he whirled around towards the mech for his next move. He was going to cyloop Eggman's newest addition to his junk pile right off its feet.
Swerving down in a sharp arc, Super Sonic avoided the next blast while he swung around to try and circle it. It's clawed hand swiped at him before he could complete his first circuit. He shot straight up before it could catch him, homing attacking it in the face instead.
The comm was still quiet. Tails must've swapped to their own channel. Super Sonic flew backwards, putting both the titan and the distant satellite in his line of sight. Whatever he had to say, he didn't want anyone else to hear it.
Super Sonic's brow furrowed as a barrage of bullets opened up on him. He weaved between the hundreds of projectiles glinting dangerously in the sunlight, but his chaos energy and speed worked in tandem, as fluidly as a dance, while he searched for another opening to try the cyloop again.
He could beat this thing without it, sure, but it was the fastest way to take it down.
"Tails? Still with me, bud?" Super or not, Sonic still spared a second to check in, static ringing in his ears as he burst through the center of the mech's chest plate for a shortcut.
"I'm here," Tails answered, but his voice sounded faint, like the feedback was drowning him out. "Sorry, I…" Super Sonic started his cyloop. "I just wanted to—" He was halfway around. "I'm sorry—"
Sonic closed the loop. A burst of chaos energy swelled up with a deafening boom. The air rippled with the force of it in great gusts of wind that rocked the trees and the grass of the nearby hills. Waves rose up in the bay, their white caps scraping the bottom of the golden bridge that marked the edge of the sea. The fake titan lifted into the air, sparks crackling off its metal casing as its system overloaded. Super Sonic didn't give it a second to recalibrate itself.
Faster than anyone could see, he smashed into it on all sides. A tiny mote of golden light against the towering behemoth, but it struck every weak point, fried every circuit, as the chaos energy pressed in on it from the outside. Metal crunched and caved it on itself, contorting into a twisted configuration until it no longer resembled a machine.
A cheap imitation of the ancients' attempts to defend themselves, designed only to destroy instead of protect.
Super Sonic grabbed onto mech's arm—or maybe its leg, it was hard to tell at this point—as the cyloop's effect faded, catching it before it crushed Westopolis. He swung it around and around, gritting his teeth as he built up momentum and set his sights on the ocean out ahead of them. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh—
Super Sonic let go.
The mech's remains were flung through the air, over the coastline and beyond the bridge that cut off the bay from the sea. It crashed into the water, the ocean spray shooting up into the air in a tower of mist once it hit the surface. The waves rolled aggressively towards the coastline, but ultimately broke apart in the bay before they could do too much damage. Some millionaires might have to replace a yacht or two, but that wasn't Sonic's problem.
As he dusted his hands off, he could finally acknowledge the warning bells Tails's last words to him had set off. "Hey, what was that, bud? I didn't catch—"
Super Sonic turned towards the satellite, addressing it like he would Tails, but it was gone. Instead a cloud of smoke filled the space where the satellite had been not ten seconds ago. Metal shards and fire rained upon the bay. Everything in pieces. Everything gone.
His comm was in chaos. Unintelligible voices shouted over one another in a cacophony of white noise that was already fighting a losing battle to the ringing in his ears. But he still noticed one voice was missing. He couldn't hear it.
He hadn't heard any of it.
Over the sonic boom of his cyloop and the screeching of metal as he demolished the titan, Sonic hadn't heard the satellite explode.
The satellite his little brother was on.
He'd been trying to tell him something.
He'd been trying to tell him something before a satellite exploded with him on it.
"I'm sorry."
Tails.
Super Sonic shot off like a bullet, speeding towards the black cloud of smoke and smoldering debris like there was even a chance—
No. There had to be a chance—
"I just wanted to—I'm sorry—"
Why? What happened? What did you do, Tails?
He hadn't even properly seen him off before he left. Tails had been trying to hack into Eggman's satellite remotely while Sonic was out chasing after the faux titans. He told them all about his plan to board the satellite and everyone agreed it sounded like the right call, so long as he could do it quickly. They needed to disrupt the signal, after all, and Tails was their best shot.
That was what he'd said, wasn't it? "You're our best shot, Tails. I believe in you, partner."
Their best shot, but not the only one. Not if it meant this.
Nothing was worth this.
Sonic didn't need to breathe while super, but his lungs still burned twin holes in his chest as his own nervous system caught fire. Golden sparks flicked off his quills as he raced through the air. Fiery eyes frantically scanned each scrap of metal that fell, but they must've already been irritated from the smoke because they burned and blurred with the rest of the world around him—
"—onic, wait! Come back! Sonic!"
One voice.
Super Sonic stopped. He stopped so fast and so suddenly, it felt like his own soul completely missed the memo. Like everything inside him continued to hightails it towards where Tails had been without him, leaving him empty. Hollow. Cold.
A vacuous space in the center of himself where there'd once been something.
The chaos energy inside him didn't know what to do with that.
With so much… nothing.
Stunned, he could only float in place for a stupid second until he remembered he'd stopped for a reason. With a sharp turn, his stare locked onto a splash of orange amidst the blotchy colors of the rest of the world bleeding into one another. Like he was still moving too fast to see clearly. Like he couldn't catch up to himself.
"Sonic…" Tails's voice broke like it had on the comm, but it wasn't with pain guilt fear regret static.
Vision clearing, Sonic could see him now. At the edge of one of the hills overlooking Westopolis and the bay. Tails just rubbed at his nose with a sheepish sort of grin, like the explosion was a minor miscalculation. A hiccup. My bad, he could hear him saying, like he was standing in the middle of his workshop, covered in soot and singed fur, one hand on his hip and a fire extinguisher at his feet.
Like he was fine.
Like he hadn't been incinerated in the fiery inferno smoldering above them.
Tails lowered his hand, eyes shining as they looked up at him, reflecting the very sky Super Sonic was caught in as the satellite's remains fell all around him. He'd been on that satellite. Just seconds ago, Sonic had been so sure of it.
He'd been so sure he'd lost him…
Then Tails opened his arms to him and laughed.
All at once Sonic crashed back into himself, chest heaving with a sharp inhale as his heart lurched forward.
Faster than a blink, Super Sonic barrelled into Tails and sent them toppling down the hillside. They smacked hard against the ground, but Sonic took the brunt of the fall even with the world spinning around them. His arms encircled Tails tightly, one hand protecting the back of his head while the other braced the small of his back as they tumbled and whooped like a pair of idiots. Pure joy radiated through him, burning brighter than the chaos energy coursing through his quills. It knocked the emeralds right out of him. The seven gems fell into the grass around them as the two mobians eventually rolled to a stop.
Sonic clutched Tails to him, shaking with breathless laughter as he felt his little brother hug him back just as tightly. "I'm here," Tails was saying, and it took a minute to realize he'd been repeating the words while Sonic's hands were trembling. "I'm here. It's okay, big bro. I'm here. I’m here."
"And you say I'm the one that's gonna give you a heart attack," Sonic wheezed, not bothering to give himself room to breathe if it meant letting go for even a second.
"Can't let you have all the fun." Tails smoothed his hands over Sonic's spines to try and settle him, his touch purposeful and grounding. "Deep breaths, big bro. You're gonna pass out."
"Nuh-uh," he argued, but filled his lungs with his next inhale anyway, then let all the air ease out of him.
"That's it. There ya go," Tails encouraged, but Sonic couldn't help his snort of indignation at being coddled and pushed away from him.
Except Tails just tightened his grip; fingers curling in his fur like they'd be forced apart if he didn't. He hid his face in the crook of Sonic's neck, his breaths coming only a little too fast. But his hands were shaking, too, and his twin tails wound around them both as if they were enough to protect them from the next threat.
Sonic didn't pull away. He just sat back, the eleven-year-old practically in his lap, and rested his hand atop Tails's head.
"Gave me a real scare there, pal," he said, voice low and gentle as he smoothed out his fur, picking at the grass and brambles they were both covered in.
"…Scared me, too."
Sonic's heart clenched, the open admission like a bludgeon to his protective instincts, even if his pride assured him Tails could handle it. After all, the proof had all but climbed into his lap. But now that he was looking at him—really looking at him—he could see his fur was mussed up from more than just a tumble at supersonic speed. A streak of blood stained his fur on his shoulder and there was a lump near the center of his back that filled Sonic with an angry fire hot enough to burn through the atmosphere when he so much as brushed against it with his fingers.
Tails didn't flinch when he grazed it, but his muscles gave an involuntary spasm that rippled beneath his fur and his hold on Sonic tightened. It was enough to quell the roiling rage to a simmer. Something he could stick a lid on without worrying it would boil over if left unchecked. It wasn't what Tails needed from him right now.
But Sonic still wanted some answers.
"What happened up there?" he asked.
Tails shook his head. "Just a bit of a closer call than I thought it'd be. But I'll be okay. I am okay."
Sonic instinctively bristled, prepared to be shut out of whatever it was he'd gone through. "Tails—"
"I'll tell you someday," he promised, pressing his paw over Sonic's heart. "I mean it. But right now we've got a lot of Eggman's mess to clean up. There's still six other titans out there and I'm sure everyone else is worried."
Sonic sighed, as exasperated as he could manage when he was still just glad this kid was alive. "Gonna hold you to that," he threatened, ruffling his fur to muss it up on purpose. "You owe me. Nearly shocked the Chaos Emeralds right outta my system."
"Says Mr. Guy-Who-Loves-Adventure," Tails teased as he pushed himself up to stand. "You should be used to it by now."
Sonic snorted when he was offered a hand up, but he took it nonetheless. "When I go gray early, I'll know exactly who to blame."
"Don't worry. I'll help you dye your quills, old man," Tails snickered, but it broke off with a wince as a sharp twinge ran through his back.
Sonic was quick to lay a supportive hand at his hip to steady him. "Look who's talking. At this rate, you're gonna be right there with me setting the record for the world's youngest old timers."
Tails sent him a look, but accepted the help nonetheless as he leaned his weight against him. "Did you really have to knock us all the way down the hill like that?"
"Heh. Well, in my defense, wasn't exactly thinking straight." Sonic scratched at his nose, giving him a not-so-subtle onceover. "Didn't bang ya up too bad, did I?"
"Nah. I'll bounce back," Tails assured him, giving him a pat on the back.
"You always do," Sonic agreed warmly as they took a few steps in tandem so they could start collecting the Chaos Emeralds on their way back up the hill while Tails alerted everyone to their status on his comm and checked in on everyone else as well.
Sonic just listened, taking in the rise and fall of his voice, his steady assurances and sighs of relief to hear that the world hadn't fallen apart in his absence. Even if it very nearly did. As far as Sonic was concerned, anyway.
But he was okay now. That was what mattered. And whatever it was that happened on that satellite—whatever reason Tails had for calling him seconds before disaster—he would trust that his little brother would come to him when he was ready. Because he'd be there for him. No matter what.
Keeping his arm looped around Tails’s waist even after they made it back up the hill, Sonic looked up at the smoke still fading from the sky. He tightened his hold on him. It felt like another lifetime, like another him had first seen the explosion and feared the worst. Tails followed his gaze, quiet again with all the calls taken care of and winded from the uphill climb. Through his labored breaths, there was the slightest tremor that traveled from his chest to where he stood pressed against his brother.
"…Scared me, too."
 "Hey, whatever happened up there," Sonic broke the silence, his voice drawing Tails back down beside him. "Whatever you did, I'll bet it was seriously way past cool." He glanced over at him, waiting to catch his eye before giving him a wink.
All too easily, Tails grinned up at him, the shape of his smile the spitting image of his brother's. "Way past is definitely one way to put it."
———
Five years later…
———
"You've been quiet all day, partner. Something going on in that big brain of yours?"
Everyone else had split off for the night. Team Dark vanished sometime after lunch, after Rouge once again tricked Shadow into accompanying her, and Team Chaotix had an appointment for their next case. Amy took Cream back home to Vanilla while Tangle and Whisper left to help Jewel out with some Restoration business.
Which left just Sonic and Tails lounging on the couch; the former picking up where Vector had left off in the game he'd been playing, tapping away at the controller while the latter watched.
Tails hummed in acknowledgement, so Sonic let him have a minute of quiet to collect his thoughts. He picked at one of Whisper's cinnamon muffins, crumbs scattering across the coffee table, but he didn't eat any of it. He hadn't had much of an appetite since slinking out of his lab earlier that afternoon.
It probably had something to do with the quiet and the way he'd been kinda clingy. Sonic had planned on going for a run as soon as Tails retreated back to his lab to tinker with whatever gadgets he had tucked away back there, but he seemed pretty content to stay curled up on the couch beside him. Still, Sonic could adapt. He kicked his feet up onto the coffee table and slumped back into the cushions as he wandered aimlessly around in a game he couldn't remember owning.
"Do you remember that time you went up against Eggman's seven fake titans?"
Sonic let out a low whistle. "Boy, is that a blast from the past. What about it?"
When Tails didn't immediately continue, Sonic pressed the pause button, then shifted against the cushion to sit up and face his not-so-little-anymore bro. The sixteen-year-old fox tore his gaze from the screen to watch him instead, eyes bright from television's glow. Looking at him like that, for a split second, Sonic could still see the insecure, little fox kit he used to be in the way his shoulders hunched up as if to make himself smaller. To take up less space in the world.
Sonic draped one arm along the back of the couch, leaving space for him to lean into if he wanted it. No matter how big he got, there'd always be space for him.
Tails scooted closer and rested his head against Sonic's arm. "I needed to disrupt the satellite signal powering the Chaos Emerald vaults, but Eggman locked me out of the remote connection so I had to access it directly—"
"On the actual satellite," Sonic interjected, fingers drumming against the back of the couch. "I remember."
Tails released a long exhale. "Well, he set a trap. A way to slow me down so I wouldn't be able to unlock the emeralds for you in time. The same code that would disrupt the satellite's signal would also cause it to self-destruct. Eggman banked on me having enough self-preservation that I wouldn't engage it without trying to disable that function first."
"But you set it off anyway."
"I set it off anyway," Tails confirmed with a decisive nod. "It was the outcome with the highest percentage of saving people. The fastest way to help you guys. I thought I could get out in time. I should've gotten out in time," his voice lowered, eyes distant as if he was reliving the moment right there on their couch. "But I couldn't. Not on my own. I needed… help."
Sonic tried to follow him there, even if he didn't much like to relive that day in his waking hours. "So you called me."
"Not… exactly." Tails sat up straighter so he could look him in the eye. "I knew you'd come get me if I asked, but then countless lives would've been lost if the titans had gone on unchecked, even if just for a couple of seconds. Sometimes that's all it takes…" Tails's fist clenched as he dropped his hardened gaze to his lap. "I made the call to initiate the self-destruct in order to save people. I couldn't take that back. I couldn't take you away from them. Not again."
A younger Sonic would've snapped at him—would've argued over the value of his life with him until he wasn't the only one blue in the face. But at twenty-three, Sonic had fought more of these battles than he cared to count and never once walked away a winner. So he sat back, held his tongue, and let Tails explain himself.
"I called you to say goodbye," his voice lowered to a whisper, "I wanted to give you that, at least.”
He'd had a feeling. It wasn't one he dwelled on freely, but sometimes the thought wandered in uninvited. Moreso during the first couple of months after the incident, when everything was still fresh and closer to their present.
Before Sonic could respond, Tails pressed forward. "But then an older version of myself traveled through time with two Chaos Emeralds to save me. He said it was the only way. Because at the time, only the two of us knew what transpired on the satellite. We created a temporal paradox, a loop without a proper origin, but as long as it was contained between the two versions of me, nothing could disrupt it. That's why I couldn't tell you before. I wasn't sure… I didn't know if the future version of myself had told you what happened and if that would open up possibilities in the time stream that would botch the encounter entirely." Tails lifted his gaze to seek out Sonic's again, and he could see the eleven-year-old sitting in front of him like it was that very same day. "I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you."
"Nothing to apologize for, bud. I get it. I wouldn't want to mess up the time stream for that particular moment either." Sonic shifted the arm draped along the couch so he could cup the back of Tails's head, idly ruffling the fur there. "But if you're telling me all this now…" he drawled, moving to scritch behind Tails's ear. "Charmy wasn't the one who swiped Shadow's Chaos Emerald earlier, was he?"
Tails shrugged, muzzle quirking up on one side. "When he showed up with it today, I just had this feeling that it was time to make my move…" Tails explained. "I've been feeling it for a couple weeks now, to be honest. I had all the equipment I'd had on me that day and I looked close enough to how I remembered. I knew I probably had to go back soon. Just needed everything to align so no one would interfere. Today seemed good…"
Sonic tilted his head as Tails trailed off, his eyes still a little distant. "Well, you made it back in one piece, didn't you? Mission accomplished."
"Yeah. Mission accomplished," he echoed, but whatever was on his mind continued to fester. "I thought I made a mistake."
"Hm?"
"There were only three seconds left," Tails whispered. "I thought I messed it all up. I thought I killed us both—"
"You—"
"I was so sure it would work because it already had, but there was still the possibility I could've gotten it wrong. I could've caused a split in our realities. Created two timelines where I ceased to exist, except in this one no one would've known what happened to me and two of the Chaos Emeralds would be lost to time. How would any of you have known where to look?" Tails rambled, pressing his hands over his face. "I estimated the time of day with a standard deviation of a couple of seconds, but those seconds could've been what killed us—"
"Hey, hey, hey," Sonic hushed, shifting to wrap both arms around his little brother as he slumped against him. "You didn't. You're here. You're right here with me, see?" He gave him a firm squeeze, smile tugging at his muzzle as Tails hugged him back tightly. "Atta boy."
"Stupid…" he mumbled into Sonic's shoulder. "Why does this still work so well?"
"Heh. What're big brothers for?" Sonic huffed out a chuckle. "Listen, you can't live a life of what-ifs, bud. It'll drive you outta your mind. I should know. And I know you know that, too." He felt Tails's nod against his cheek. "You did exactly what you set out to do. And heck, you used the Chaos Emeralds to travel through time! When did you learn how to do that, huh? Holding out on your big bro?"
Tails snorted, but it got him to relax enough to pull back. "Figured if I could use Chaos Control, time travel was just an added boost. Like adding a supercharger to the Tornado's engine."
"Tch. You figured." Sonic rolled his eyes, but the warmth in them was nothing but fond. "Give yourself a little more credit. You did something incredible today, Tails. You defied time and space to save yourself. And not only that, you gave yourself a future to look forward to. Because who wouldn't want to turn out to be like you?"
It was Tails's turn to roll his eyes, though it was his own chuckle that betrayed him. "That's what I told me."
"And wiser words were never spoken," Sonic assured him as he gave his knee a firm pat.
"I dunno. Could make a case for the consequences of rewriting timelines and creating unsustainable permutations of past and future events." Tails grinned.
"Now you’re just being smart," Sonic snorted.
"Well, I am a genius." Tails bumped his shoulder to Sonics. "But I also learned from the best. Even eleven-year-old me picked up on that."
"Well, he's a genius, too. He knows what's up." Sonic slung his arm around Tails’s shoulder, this time his turn to watch as his brother picked up the video game controller to continue where Sonic left off.
He let him, taking his turn to be content as he watched Tails figure out the game faster than he did and go farther than Sonic could. They said nothing for a few minutes, Tails working out the rest of his pent up feelings through the game while Sonic quietly processed what he'd just been told. He wasn't a stranger to time travel, not by a long shot, but even so, it wasn't what he thought the answer to that day had been. As much faith he had in his best friend, his self-sacrificial tendencies were something he couldn't help but take notice of. After all, he'd learned from the best, hadn't he?
But it wasn't with bitterness or disdain when he set his gaze on the teen beside him. That wasn't possible; not when he saw every age at once. Not when he was in absolute awe of how far his kid had come.
"Tails."
"Sonic," Tails answered instinctively, matching his tone with the hint of a crooked smile.
"Thanks for saving him."
Tails blinked and paused the game so he could look at Sonic. In the light from the television screen, green eyes glimmered with a depth that took him back to a younger version of his big bro, who was trying to do everything in his power to be there for him. Because he wanted to be. Because he needed to be.
One tail curled around Sonic's back and draped over his lap, giving back the same reassurance he always gave so freely.
"Anytime, big bro."

While I know that the Sonic Boom cartoon show hype is probably super dead, the way Sonic and Eggman interact has me convinced Eggman did SOME parenting when Sonic was tiny, so here's my headcanon for that. Enjoy!
While Eggman could conquer the island he lived at, Bygone Island, the one he found nearby would be much easier, hypothetically anyway.
While Seaside Island was redundantly named, it was much more his style. The villages on it were smaller and meeker. They had no real way to fight back against his takeover! Which made it the perfect starting point for his upcoming break in his villainy career! If he took that island, surely that would've made his father proud!
Unfortunately, 'if' is the key word in that sentence.
The little blue hedgehog was no older than five years old, but despite his youth, he sucessfully stood between Eggman and complete control of the island.
And the little ragamuffin didn't even talk.
He never said a word, just showed up with his super speed and sharp quills and would put a stop to whatever genius plan he was making by breaking all his robots.
Eggman wished he knew the little nuisance's name, but seeing as he wasn't interested in talking, it left Eggman to hypothesize on appearance alone.
His back quills had ripped right through a shabby brown jacket that he wore, to the point where it wouldn't work as a jacket much longer. His gloves were constantly dirty, and no one on the forsaken island admitted who his parents were. It was like he suddenly existed one day! With no explanation!
The blue hedgehog was often running at ludicrous speeds. Speeds that, depending on the day, neared the sound barrier!
Eggman feared the day that the little blueberry would create a sonic boom.
The 'impending-sonic-boom' as he began to call the hedgehog was rather unpredictible. It all fell on a scale. Going extremely fast one day, sticking his tounge out at him and humming mocking songs, to going at what must've been like a meer jog to him, with no aknowledgement of Eggman at all the next day.
But one day, things were far more unpredictable than Eggman had bargined for.
He was racing the impending-sonic-boom in the Eggmobile. There was no hope of winning, just like there was no hope for his receeding hairline, but he needed a test. He couldn't create a robotic duplicate without anything to base it on! So it didn't matter that there was no hope of winning!
Eggman didn't need to be fancy with it, he just told the five year old koolaid stain that if he reached the end of the course before the rodent did, that he would offically own the island. And being five years old, he took it seriously.
There was no hope of winning. Not with the determination on the little guy's face.
So one can imagine the confusion that Eggman was met with when he won.
It didn't make any sense! He wasn't even- It was just the Eggmobile! It was nothing fancy! That sound-barrier-threatening-lifeform was much faster than that!
Eggman got off of his Eggmobile and stared at the folliage in front of him. Waiting to see blue quills poking out from the tall grass.
"Oh, Blueberry! I'm waaaaiting!"
It took another three seconds for the kid to show up. And when he did, he looked tired.
"Kid, you gotta be faster than that! You're not doing this on purpose are you? If this is just to spite me..."
The rodent shook his head. Eggman wouldn't have believed him if he didn't look so tired.
"Then what gives!? You can't just suddenly be slow! It's narratively inconsistent!"
The blue menace looked up at Eggman with an angry look.
"No... foo." Eggman flinched. He just spoke. He just... SPOKE.
"What? What did you say?"
"No foo...d! No food... No... fast!"
"Your speed depends on your diet?" Eggman tapped his chin, before grinning smugly. "What, did you miss your peanut butter sandwich for lunch?"
He was promptly glared at. "Okay! Geez!" Eggman tapped his gauntlet, and used it to scan the incoming-sonic-boom.
"Let's see, you're about five years old, according to your inteligence and fine motor skills... and you're one foot tall so you should weigh roughly..."
Eggman's stomach sank. He knew for a fact that the arriving-sonic-boom wasn't hitting that number. Not by a lot... Eggman could pick him up like he was a beach ball.
"When did you last eat..?"
Nothing. Nothing but staring.
"Yesterday? ...No? How about the day before? Th-the day before that? Five days ago? How about a week ago?!"
It wasn't until they hit a week and a half that the sonic-boom-in-progress pointed at Eggman. Signifying the correct timeframe
Eggman stared at the incoming-sonic-boom. For anyone, that would be damaging. For a five year old, that was almost a death sentence.
Eggman crouched down to the sonic-boom-creator and put a thumb under his chin. He squirmed violently and pushed Eggman's hand away as he stepped back.
But Eggman saw what he needed to see. There was almost no fat on his face. He was horribly underweight.
Eggman was a villain. Not a monster.
The hedgehog wiped his face, as if Eggman had gotten something on it by touching him.
"Hmm. Well, you're clearly malnourished. I can't declare victory under those circumstances! That would be cheating! Looks like you win this time, hedgehog! Now, come along! We have work to do."
The hedgehog looked up at him in–adorable–confusion. Eggman stood back up on his Eggmobile.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Hop on!"
The inevitable-sonic-boom inched towards it slowly. He gently tapped the base of the Eggmobile. When nothing happened, he looked back up to Eggman. Who groaned.
"Fine, I promise I won't hurt you, got it?"
The sonic-boom stared even more, before inevitably going for it and climbing onto the Eggmobile like a toddler.
It wasn't tipped in the slightest by the extra weight, which reminded Eggman why he was doing this at all.
His Eggmobile floated upwards and flew off. It quickly left Seaside island and then there was nothing but water below them.
He didn't expect the oncoming-sonic-boom to whimper at the sight of the ocean.
Eggman glanced down in time to see him curl up, hiding between his legs and the lower wall of the Eggmobile.
When the sonic-boom leaned against him for support, he winced and stepped back.
"Watch the quills, you blue nuisance!" He yelled.
It didn't stop the incoming-sonic-boom from grabbing him, but at least he was more careful.
Eggman had to remind himself, that the sonic-boom was a little malnourished kid, because he almost made too much food. Twice. The rodent's stomach would be small, too small for him to give the blue guy a full child-sized meal. Unless he wanted the sonic-boom throwing up on Eggman's floor.
Once Eggman had handed him a plate of food, his skittish attitude towards being on an island nowhere near his old one vanished completely. Eggman's place was a chunk of earth and lava broken off of the bygone island, yet it felt safer than the previous island, when it came to that Sonic-Boom of a hedgehog's wellbeing, at least.
The blue stain in his life stood on a chair, his tail wagging excitedly as he immediately started eating what was on his plate. Apple slices, a hot dog cut into little pieces, crackers, and even a juicebox. It might've still been too much.
Eggman watched as sonic-boom ate. Making sure that he was properly eating. It would be a waste if all his cooking didn't help out the blue rat at all.
When he was mostly done with his food, Eggman decided that enough was enough.
"Alright you menacing blue fiend," he said. "I'm going to watch television on my floating screen. Don't break anything."
He walked over to the TV, grabbed the remote, and sat down.
"Maybe I'll watch that new comedy show with the monkey-ape-thing, that should be interesting."
No more than a few minutes had passed before The Sonic-boom came into the room and jumped onto the couch.
"What do you want now? I already fed you!"
The Sonic-boom yawned and crawled onto his lap, before half-tucking into a ball and closing his eyes.
"Ohh, no you don't!" Eggman said, he picked Sonic-boom up by the back quills and pulled him off of his lap. He set him down on the couch next to him. He whined annoyingly. Before racing back on. Great. Looks like that speed is kicking in...
"No, off!"
He raced back on.
"No, off!"
He raced back on.
"No, OFF!"
He raced back on, again. Eggman grit his teeth. "NO, OFF, SONIC!"
Eggman was so caught up in the stupid game that he forgot the rest of the blue hedgehog's title. He didn't care much however, because he had raced back on and clung to him for all he was worth. Eggman sighed and decided that he didn't care enough. He wasn't willing to do this all day, after all.
The Sonic sighed happily, and purred for a moment before he fell asleep.
And if Eggman freaked out? Well, at least it stayed on the inside.

SOME THOUGHTS that drivin me nuts ...
You know I think Shards character could have need so much more character development. Like for all the trauma and insecurities he had/has to endure ... in a world, which hold (atleast a little) grudge against artifical life ... due to Eggman.
Tumblr media
He was a famous killer robot. Mocking animals ... maybe killing them?? I know Sonic universe ... kid friendly and stuff, but these sharp fingers aren't there for nothing ... He might was causing a bad future, where every living thing is a robotic slave ... he saw how the Eggman Empire could have been. And now he tries everything to adjust to the "good side". Finding a place in the world. Seeking for forgiveness and a chance to prove himself.
Tumblr media
Maybe he even can't move on from this. Alwayd playing the brave clown, while he's actually scared and frustrated. He probably stuck in his past. Always confronting himself, blaming himself ... Everytime he looks in the mirror he might not even see his current appearance ... just this menacing stare ...
Tumblr media
Also, what I believe to recognize is that Eggman seems to got softer over the years. You know like in the beginning he hated nature, life itself and Sonic (of course) so much, that he just wanted to destroy everything. But nowadays it seems he has fun challenging the rodents. It's more of a game ... So I thought it would be interesting if his designs were gettin "softer" too.
Tumblr media
And Shard might has the trauma of failing. Never won a battle alongside Eggman. Never enough for Eggman. Constant failure. Everytime reprogrammed. Everytime upgraded. Yeah of course does he want to constantly prove himself.
Tumblr media
And yes then there is the fear of abandonment. One mistake and you're just scrap. Trash. You will be left to rot. Nobody will help you, repair you and give you a second chance ... and with Chuck exactly giving him this second chance, he might be really afraid that this hedgehog, this father figure, will also leave him, when he fails.
Tumblr media
Oh and then maybe sometimes ... old habits sneak through. I also think there is this fear to go back to his old ways. No control about his "darker side".
I just love these redeeming characters. They try their best 💖

[Tom cautiously patrols the area, blaster ready. He glances to his left at the sound of rustling bushes. He tiptoes over, pushes the leaves aside, and finds Knuckles and Wade watching a movie on Wade’s phone.] Wade: Hey Tom, wanna join? Tom: What are you doing?? Knuckles: Donut Lord, before you rightfully ashame me for my actions, you should know I was eliminated a while ago. Tom: Oh… and how? Like this? [Tom swiftly turns around and eliminates Rouge, who was silently descending behind him. She drops to the asphalt in defeat.] Tom: You’re in my town, bat. [Tom’s vest lights up, and he freezes in shock. Shadow appears out of nowhere, sprinting toward his next target.] Knuckles: Run, hedgehog, run! Rouge: Get him, Shadow! [Sonic is perched in a tree, pressing his vest against the trunk for protection. His ears twitch at every sound. His attention shifts downward when he sees a chili dog approaching the tree on a remote-controlled car.] Sonic: Oooh, dibs--Wait a sec! This is real life, not a dream. Something smells fishy… tasty but fishy. [Back at the Mean Bean, Robotnik is spying on Sonic while piloting the remote car.] Amy: That’s cheating! Robotnik: All’s fair in war, hedgehog! Besides, nobody said we couldn’t bribe with food! Maddie: You scoundrel… Sonic, if you come down from that tree, you’re grounded—three months, no console! [The remote car starts circling the tree.] Sonic: Eggman, cut it out! I’m not coming down no matter how many laps you do! [to himself]: Oh man, please let the battery die; he loaded it with extra chili, that jerk… [A drop of water falls onto his nose. Sonic sniffs and rubs it, glancing upward to check the sky.] Sonic: Is it raining?? Robotnik [through loudspeakers]: For you, it is. [An Eggbot emerges through the branches, relentlessly spraying Sonic with water. Sonic swats at it.] Knuckles: That’s cheating! You know Sonic’s hydrophobic! Rouge: So what?! He’s only up there because Shadow’s scared of heights! Nobody said anything about exploiting weaknesses! [Sonic loses his grip and falls. Shadow runs, catches him, gently sets him down, and hands him a towel.] Shadow: You okay? Sonic: Yeah, yeah… Thanks. [takes the towel] Shadow: Good. [eliminates him] [Sonic groans. Robotnik, Stone, and Rouge cheer and run to hug Shadow.] Robotnik: CHAAAAAMPIOOOONS, WE ARE THE CHAAAAAMPIOOOONS!!! Knuckles: Worry not, family, I’ve got the solution. I read in a book that rats follow flute music. Dang it, we don’t have one. Well, they can’t be that smart. Maybe I can fool them. [mimics playing a flute, whistling off-key] Shadow: Sonic, we still going to the movies tomorrow? Sonic: Yeah, sure. One thing has nothing to do with the other. Robotnik: Hey, for a little extra cash, I can set up a home theater-- Maddie: Aaaah, shut up! Yeah, you won, but we’re not stepping into your stupid café unless it's open for clients! We’re going to my sister’s place. Tom: Damn it. Maddie: Zip it! Robotnik: Ah, look at the sore loser! Na-na na-na-na! Better start naming those rats, cause you’ll have them even in your soup! Though, well, naming rats is something you’re used to. Tom: Joke’s on you. Our kids already had names by the time we met them. Maddie: Tom, shut up! Stone: And you, Ivo, ease up. No need to rub salt in the wound. Robotnik: Oh yes, there is! Let me bask in this, first time I win, after all! Rouge: Waaaaait a minute… You just beat the Wachowskis at a game and insulted the matriarch… and there hasn’t been a single witty comeback…? Sonic: True. [looks around]: Where’s Tails??? He was playing too! Everyone: … … Robotnik [inhales slowly]: Tell me that fox is pushing up daisies. [stares at his family; they exchange glances and shake their heads]: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The Wachowskis: YEEEEEEEEEEES! Maddie [dancing]: THE WACHOWSKIS ARE STILL STANDING! Tom: Wait, where is Tails??

SONIC 3 MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM
My Sonic 3 Review:
Opening the film with Shadow waking up to memories of Maria I am SICK
Maria... was playing... Live and Learn... on guitar... omg... my heart...
OZZY'S "You stole my hoomans!" LMAOOOOOO
The fact that when Sonic says to Tom "I don't know what I'd do without you, I'd probably be a completely different hedgehog", they cut to Shadow - that is PEAK cinematography!
SHADOW ON HIS MOTORBIKE!!!
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY AGENT STONE ON A MOTORBIKE HELLO???
Tails wanted to go the chao garden he is so adorable I love him so much 😭 and the look on his face when they start performing he's just a little guy 🥺
THE WAY THE CHAO WERE RUNNING ABOUT WHEN THE CHAO GARDEN WAS ATTACKED WAS SO FUNNY
Eggman watching telenovelas is so accurate actually
Agent Stone is just so in love isn't he? In fact the Stobotnik scenes in this film were some of my favourite scenes - Lee Majdoub you're amazing
Keanu Reeves was AMAZING as Shadow
Shadow looked so scared when he was put in the tank and it was filling with water poor baby 🥺
One thing that was NOT on my Sonic 3 bingo chart was COMMANDER WALTERS FUCKING DYING??? THEY KILLED THE OLIVE GARDEN GUY???
Maria drawing a bunny face over Shadow in the tank she is so precious I love them both so much 😭
The little montage of Shadow and Maria hanging out made me SICK (in a good way) especially that scene when he's running through the halls pulling her behind him on her rollerskates LOL
NOOOOO SHADOW YOU'RE NOT AN ALIEN FREAK DON'T LISTEN TO THAT STUPID MOVIE
"There's still light, even when the star's not there anymore" okay so I'm just gonna cry into my popcorn now thx
Stone calling Tails adorable he is so real for that
Eggman saying that he's "undesirable to all possible genders" 🤨🏳️‍🌈 'whoa he's bisexual I didn't know that!'
Speed reference!
"It's like we're in a movie and we're both being played by the same actor! *Slowly stare into camera*" That fourth wall break was BRILLIANT
I can't decide whether Tom's puppet of himself is absolutely hilarious or absolutely terrifying
The montage of Eggman and Gerald lol! (but poor Stone was left out ☹️)
The entire London break-in scene was great! Especially when Knuckles finally got to break the glass!
REVENGE GUAC
Can we take a minute to appreciate the complete contrast between Gerald saying "a WOMAN in the MILITARY 😒" and Shadow saying that the girl in the telenovela should kill both the guys fighting over her because she's "not a prize to be won"?
Also Shadow watching a telenovela and telling the girl to kill both guys is so accurate LMAO he really said 'YOU LEAVE THAT LATINA ALONE!'
Ngl for a hot second I GENUINELY thought Tom was dead that was SCARY
Are we gonna talk about the fact that Gerald and Shadow were ready to kill themselves if it meant getting revenge?
The way Shadow's face changes and he flashbacks to Maria when he sees Sonic knelt next to Tom begging him to wake up... The parallels between Sonic and Shadow in this film... Oh my goodness...
Sonic getting mad enough to steal the Master Emerald from Knuckles was also NOT on my Sonic 3 bingo chart - I thought we were gonna see them fight each other for a sec which was CRAZY
I'm not the biggest Wade fan but Sonic effortlessly taking the Master Emerald from him and him replying "well I tried" was comedy GOLD - all that training in the Knuckles series for nothing huh 😂
Sonic turning super for vengeance purposes oh my goodness...
Maria's death scene really gave me goosebumps - the way Commander Walters shouts "don't shoot they're children!" - the way Shadow's face changes when he sees Maria dead - the way Gerald was crying...
I think it really says a lot about G.U.N that in this version, they didn't even shoot Maria but they were still actively responsible for her death - that officer DID shoot and he DID try and aim at Maria and that explosion WAS caused by him
Obviously I hate G.U.N but I actually feel kinda bad for Walters now like he really did try to save her didn't he 🫤
Both Gerald and Walters refer to Maria AND Shadow as children which I appreciate cuz it shows how young Shadow really was when everything went to hell for him - he's just a baby your honour he didn't MEAN to blow up earth 🥺
Sonic attacking Shadow in super form was just... WOW! He was REALLY angry wasnt he?
SUPER SONIC VS SUPER SHADOW??? HOLY SHIT!!! THAT BATTLE WAS EPIC!!! 🤯
Sonic almost killing Shadow over him almost killing Tom was a really great way to relate Sonic and Shadow's stories - Sonic coming around when Shadow points to his heart, thinking about what Tom said at the start of the film parallelling Shadow then coming around after remembering what Maria said to him... This is one hell of a film!
Sonic and Shadow watching the sun come up together as Shadow repeats what Maria says about light and stars 😭
"Don't tell me you've got a catchphrase..." "Yep, and everyone loves it!" Another fourth wall break that did NOT disappoint.
LIVE AND LEARRRRRN!!! HANGING ON THE EDGE OF TOMMOROW— 🎶
THEY DID THE SA2 POSE!!! I REPEAT, THEY DID THE SA2 POSE!!! AND IN SUPER FORM TOO!!!
Did they just... fucking... incinerate Gerald... wtf.... RIP I guess...
Shadow attacked those robots with SUPER CHOAS SPEARS in one scene!!! Which is AWESOME!!!
Eggman switching sides cuz even he knows blowing up the world is a bad idea 👍
I could go on and on and on about the Super Sonic and Super Shadow scene IT WAS SO GOOD!!!
Sonic falling to earth gave me a heart attack. Tails then falling to earth whilst trying to save Sonic also gave me a heart attack. Knuckles going to save them both making me think he was also gonna fall to earth gave me a third heart attack.
The way I physically leaned forward in my seat when Shadow took off his inhibitor rings—
They pissed on the moon.
We've seen Shadow smile so much in this film and it is SO refreshing to see! That smile right before he and Sonic team up to attack those robots Gerald sends after them is my favourite smile we've ever seen on him.
Eggman dedicated his last speech before dying to Stone 😭😩🥹 AND STONE SAYING "I CAN'T LOSE YOU AGAIN" THEY BETTER KISS IN THE NEXT FILM I SWEAR—
Team Sonic hug 🥹
Ending on the race was perfect (bonus points for Ozzy barking with subtitles again because that was HILARIOUS)
WE GON RUN IT RUN IT RUN IT TILL WE RUNNING OUTTA ROAD 💃💃💃
OMG AMY! AMY AMY AMY OH MY GOODNESS AMY! HELLO AMY! I'VE MISSED YOU SWEET AMY! AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY!!! I GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW THAT HAMMER! AMY ROSE! HI!!! YOU LOOK SO GOOD!!! AMY AMY AMY!!!
Oh yeah and Metal Sonic.
AMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
So great to see that Shadow's NOT dead (although tbf I did kinda expect that - it would've been unlikely that they genuinely kill him off when he's such a popular character)
Honestly I think the END end credits scene was a perfect set up for a Shadow spinoff, like they HAVE to make one now
I also think the two end credits scenes together show that Eggman isn't really dead either - again it would be unlikely for them to kill him off PLUS if Shadow managed to chaos control himself out of there he could've easily gone back for Eggman too (and I mean who else is gonna be responsible for creating Metal Sonic?)
AMY, PEOPLE, AMY!!!
Overall, I think it's pretty clear that I LOVED this film! It was amazing and I'm already excited for the next one lol! ❤️

I can't believe I never told you guys about the Sonic 3 art auction.
Anyway, story time!
So back in December, I went to go see Sonic 3 like the good little nerd I am. The theater I went to was a bit more empty than I expected (turns out it was closing the next week or something), but there was something there that, after asking around, I have yet to see anywhere else.
There was a charity auction for people's Sonic and Shadow art.
Tumblr media
This. Was. Glorious. Look at all of them. Simply beautiful in their own ways. One of the Shadow ones even had glitter mixed in. Naturally, my friends and I put our bids in, caught the movie, and then waited.
Good news: my buddy won the Ash Baby Eggman.
Best news: I got Magnet.
Tumblr media
AB, whoever you are, thank you for letting Regal put your work in the charity auction. It was definitely a great final memory for that old theater, because as of posting, it is shuttered and set to be demolished.
Just...how did I not post this? This is what we came for, right? A show and earnest artwork. Love y'all, Sonic fans.

Uncontrolled Chaos: Chapter 1
Notes: I’m wanting to start some sort of fluffier story. I do a lot of angsty one-shots, but I need something soft in the mix too. So here it is! I’ve been thinking of this concept since Sonic X Shadow Generations came out and it all got me thinking about alternate timelines and dimensions and such. Be patient with me! I’m not use to writing big projects so this will be trial and error..
Summary: Chaos Control is unpredictable. And when used improperly, it can create— well.. CHAOS. Shadow wakes up after using it with the fake chaos emerald and things are definitely off. Especially with a certain blue hedgehog..
Rating: Currently T for language, but prolly will end up being mature (18+). 👀
Chapter Select: Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6
Support my Ao3!

Start:
There has been some crazy things happen to Shadow while using chaos control. And he usually isn’t one to experiment with such abilities messily. However, he currently doesn’t have much of a choice.
In a mission alone, he found himself struggling. Which is saying something since he doesn’t often struggle at all, thus him being assigned jobs alone. But this was different. His chaos emerald had disappeared a while back due to a place called—what Rouge informed him as— Starfall Islands. She had been panicky at the time because Knuckles had disappeared, taking on guarding the Master Emerald herself and guising it as her trying to steal it when he returned. He informed her that Sonic and co. had been investigating these islands due to the emeralds being pulled there, and apparently a lot went down.
Either way, Shadow was out a chaos emerald. But he did still have the fake one the young fox had made all those years ago.
And that’s where things went wrong.
He remembered Sonic had been able to use chaos control with it, though it wiped out Sonic’s energy for a while. Either way, Shadow didn’t have much choice as he was running out of time. The detonators he had set up were nearing their end and Shadow still hadn’t made it out yet.
He pulled out the fake chaos emerald, gripping it in his gloved hand as he gritted his teeth and skated down the long halls of the supposedly abandoned GUN facility. ‘Supposedly’ because they had detected movement on their scans of it and sent Shadow to investigate only to find Eggman sniffing around with more bots than they had originally anticipated.
He huffed out labored breaths, dodging the shots from the robots behind him as he skated down the hall. Glancing down to his watch, he saw he had 10 seconds left. An agitated growl escaped him as his eyes looked up to see the exit blocked by several more bots. He could take them down and get out easy. But not within 10 seconds.
10.
Shadow’s ruby eyes look down at the amber-colored emerald in his hands.
9.
His eyes shut as he kept skating.
8.
If Sonic could do it, he could do it. He’s the Ultimate Lifeform.
7.
He tried to focus on the emerald, the minimal energy flowing through it.
6.
It wasn’t near as much as a real one.. but it could work.
5.
While concentrating, he is hit by a blast in his back, stumbling a bit with a grunt before hissing and quickly regaining his footing to continue on.
4.
Ignoring the sting, he opened his eyes, filled with determination.
3.
“Chaos—“
2.
“—Control!!”
1.
A flash of light, the facility explodes along with the badniks inside.
Shadow has that familiar feeling of the chaos energy flowing out of him and through the emerald back inside him.. moving him through reality as he envisions himself standing on the cliff side far away at the rendezvous point..
But then he feels something else.
He gasps, eyes clamping shut at the sudden loss of a massive amount of his energy. Gritting his teeth through the empty pain, he feels what can only be described as a tug..
And then a yank.
And then nothing.
•••
Shadow begins to slowly feel again.
And by slowly feel, he means absolute exhaustion.
His muscles feel as though they won’t work if he tries to move them, his bones feel like jelly. Even his eyelids don’t seem to want to open quite yet.
His ear flicks.. the sound of birds through a window to his left.
He sniffs. Sage and lavender..
Is he…?
His eyes finally flutter open, a small grunt escaping him at the brightness coming from the window that is indeed to his left.
His window.
He’s.. home..?
Trying to sit up, he grunts and finds himself unable to just yet. He doesn’t hurt so much as he just feels… drained.
Though, there is a lingering ache to his back.. must be where he had gotten shot.
He glances down at himself to see a bandage wrapped around him.. so someone must’ve found him and mended him.
Probably Rouge if he had to guess. She has a nurturing streak in her even if she’d never admit it.
He lets his head sink into his pillow, eyes fluttering a bit from how tired he is. But he’s rested enough. It’s daylight out, and which means he had to at least been out for the night. And he doesn’t need sleep.
Taking a deep breath and just about to try and force himself up, he hears footsteps.
He pauses, head lifting and eyes moving to look at the door and watch the bat enter.
Except.. the bat doesn’t enter.
Instead, Shadow is met by emerald eyes peeking inside. Opening the door fully, Sonic steps into the room holding a bottle of water. He’s smiling, soft and gentle as if approaching an infant. His ears are slightly folded back, the way he’s tense but slightly hunched screams relief. His eyes hold concern in them, worry. But he tries not to show it with how he’s all smiles and bright eyes. Shadow can see how bloodshot they are though. Has he slept?? Probably not. The dumb hedgehog is too irresponsible to properly take care of himself and-
What is he doing in Shadow’s house???
“Hey, Faker..,” Sonic says in a tone that throws Shadow off a bit. It’s not cocky and energized and loud; it’s small and breathy and almost affectionate.
Still annoying, though.
Shadow doesn’t speak, just watches Sonic with a scowl as the blue hedgehog approaches. Sonic sits on the side of the bed, Shadow’s ruby eyes looking him up and down in an ‘excuse you’ and ‘who do you think you are??’ sort of manner. Sonic either doesn’t notice or ignores this, moving to open the bottle of water for Shadow and holding it to his mouth, “Drink up for me, huh?”
Shadow raises a hand to snatch the bottle away, nearly spilling it in the process but glaring at Sonic nonetheless, “I am perfectly capable of drinking myself.”
Sonic blinks and then chuckles with a roll of his eyes, “Well excuuuse me for caring.”
Shadow grunts, lifting the bottle a bit shakily to take a long sip from it. He downs it all in one go, sighing in relief once he’s done and setting the empty bottle on his lap. He really needed that. It almost made him dizzy with the energy boost that alone gave him.
But he still felt a bit off.
Closing his eyes to take a deep breath, his attention is swiftly turned back to the blue hedgehog when he feels a hand touching his head. It rubs along the top of it down Shadow’s back to underneath his back quills and lightly scratches there.
Shadow tenses up then jolts a bit, shifting away from Sonic the best he can in the moment as his wide eyes stare at the hero in both disbelief and disgust.
“I didn’t say you could touch me,” Shadow nearly growls out, his fangs showing with how he sneers at Sonic. Sonic’s hand is returned to himself as if it had been burned, staring at Shadow a bit surprised before speaking with an awkward smile, “Sorry..” His ears flatten further to his head, looking a bit like a kicked puppy.
Shadow’s eyes narrow at him a moment before he frowns and looks around, “What are you even doing here?? How did you get here??” Last Shadow checked, Sonic didn’t know where he lived.
Sonic pauses and then looks away with a knitted brow, “I brought you back here after we found you.. You were hurt, and you wouldn’t wake up. It really scared me—“
“Who is ‘we’?? Why were you near GUN property—“
He pauses.
Blinks.
Scared???
Sonic looks at Shadow with an even more concerned look now, “GUN property? Shadow, what are you talking about??”
Shadow frowns at him, trying to determine if this is some sort of obnoxious prank of some sort.
“...What are you talking about?” Shadow asks skeptically.
Sonic chuckles a bit at that, “I asked you first.”
“I don’t care.”
“What is with your attitude??” Sonic huffs, his arms crossing impatiently over his chest, “Are you mad at me??? I get it if you’re mad, but can’t we just talk about it without you being an asshole??”
“Excuse me?!”
“I know I messed up, and I am genuinely so sorry. I never meant for you to get hurt! But I also didn’t ask for you to save my butt like that or take the hit-”
“You’re making no sense!” Shadow snaps again, feeling his head start to throb now. He was getting overwhelmed.
Why was Sonic in his house?
Why was Sonic talking about Shadow saving him when he did no such thing??
Why was Sonic comfortable enough to sit on his bed and touch him???
What is going on!?
“Calm down, Shadow!” Sonic scolds a bit softer, brows knitted with worry as he watches Shadow seethe in his stress, “Why are you being so easily-agitated???”
“What are you doing here!? Where’s Rouge???”
Sonic looks at Shadow like he’s got two heads, “Shadow, did you hit your head???”
Sonic doesn’t even hesitate, moving a hand to cup Shadow’s cheek and gently tilt his head towards him so he can get a better look of it. His other hand gently feeling through Shadow’s quills, and Shadow feels his face heating up. His cheeks puff as he tries not to explode.
It’s too much.
It’s TOO MUCH.
“Stop touching me!!!!”
Sonic immediately moves to stand up, staring at Shadow with surprise at how angry he seems. The hero doesn’t look angry, though. He looks worried. And scared almost.
Taking a small breath, he backs up a bit towards the door and then looks down a moment, “...Okay.” His eyes lift again to Shadow, looking determined, “Okay. Let’s just calm down, huh?? Let’s talk..”
Shadow growls at him, “And why would I talk to you??”
“Because I’m the one here listening??” Sonic says with a little tilt of his head, his hands resting on his hips, “...Why are you being so hostile?”
“Because you’ve invaded my home and my personal space!” Shadow sneers back, glaring daggers at Sonic.
Sonic’s hands raise a bit at that in a surrender sort of way, “Well, that’s fair about the personal space, I guess. You just woke up and you’re probably overwhelmed. But I thought we were cool on calling this our home at this point.”
Shadow’s eyes widen a bit at that, scoffing as if absolutely baffled at Sonic’s words, “Our home?? What the hell are you on about now???”
Sonic stares at Shadow looking a bit confused now as well, that worry returning again with an done expression on his face, “...That’s it. I’m calling Tails,” he huffs, turning to walk out the bedroom door.
Shadow’s eyes widen, leaning up to yell after him, “DO NOT INVITE MORE PEOPLE TO MY HOUSE!”

I love Tails expression in the first panel. When he said "Sonic i won´t let you down." That made me wonder immediately if Sonic could hear him. If it could trigger Sonic to wake up? My theory is still that certain triggers could wake Sonic up. Something that invokes a strong emotion perhaps?🤔
That hesitation in Robo Sonics voice. The way his eyes looked. A bit confused. I wonder what´s going on inside his mind? Not that Robo Sonic had much of a chance to react because Eggman immediately gave him another command. If Sonic was trying to wake up, the command Eggman gave him probably made sure he couldn´t think. So it will be interesting to see what happens when Eggman isn´t there to give commands. It would give Robo Sonic more of a chance to think for himself. Without a command in the way to override his thoughts.
The area where Amy is right now reminds me of scrapnik island. I wonder which of Eggmans old robots we´re gonna come across. Maybe Tails could reprogram some old robots they find?
Tails could still find a way to activate the lockdown. Altough i think he might just try to trap Robo Sonic. Lock him in a room. That could bring out Sonics claustrophobia. I already theorized this would be another possible trigger that could wake up Sonic.
Tails, Amy, Knuckles and Sticks on the run is going to be interesting and there is probably gonna be some chaos with Robo Sonic chasing them. Excited to see what happens next.
This entire issue was amazing from the art  the humor and all the serious moments. Just so well done all of it. I´m a bit sad that this issue is already done. I´ve enjoyed reading and sharing my thoughts and theories. I will miss the updates  for a bit. That said take all the time you need for the next part. For now i will read the chapters again and i´ll be thinking about what could happen next. 🤔
Hi, Arya!
I think it would be pretty rude for Tails to purposefully attempt to induce Sonic's claustrophobia in Robo-Sonic. After all, fear is the mind killer. Not its savior.
I'm super glad you enjoyed issue 2! We're sad its over, too. Time seems to have flown by. However, Issue 3 is in the works and we're about a fourth of the way done! Look forward to more updates on that soon! 😉

As requested, here is an edited version (although I left some stuff in that doesn't really need to be there, like the whole section on the NPT) of my paper on nuclear strategy in the Sonic Adventure series:
None of this is good, Vector. That’s why it’s called war.
- Knuckles the Echidna, in Sonic Forces (2017)
Sonic the Hedgehog is a very weird video game series.
(Author's note: the quality of this paper does not reflect the majority of my academic writing. It was for a 200-level (beginner's) English class wherein I was encouraged to do whatever I wanted and not worry about tone, topic, etc. I also wrote it in less than a day after having written 3 other papers the same week, and was suffering from sleep deprivation and brain fog while writing it. I have not included my references in this post because they were done in Chicago footnote format and don't paste into Tumblr well. If you want more info on anything I mention, I will gladly provide sources on said topics! Ty ty)

Sonic the Hedgehog is a very weird video game series.
This statement has nothing to do with its varying quality of gameplay. Sonic the Hedgehog is weird because its surface presentation as a colourful, furry-adjacent Dragon Ball rip-off disguises its extremely fascinating perspectives on warfare. The games frequently feature weapons of mass destruction in its stories, which allows for interesting analysis on the strategies used in-game and how it relates to American perspectives on nuclear war. The first game analyzed will be Sonic Adventure, which depicts an attempted nuclear strike on an American city. The second game analyzed will be Sonic Adventure 2, which features an attempt at WMD-boosted bargaining. These games will be used to answer the following research question: which side does Dr. Eggman take in the Borden-Brodie debate on nuclear weapons strategy?
As a brief explanation, the Borden-Brodie debate is about how nuclear weapons will actually be used in a nuclear war between two states. This debate emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s, as theorists attempted to predict the future of war after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Borden predicted that nuclear weapons would be used as “big artillery” to support regular military attacks, whereas Brodie predicted that the devastating effects of nuclear weapons would make war between two nuclear weapons states (NWS) inconceivable. Brodie appears to have won the debate as nuclear doctrine shifted to favour deterrence during the Cold War, but we must consider the following idea: perhaps, in the grand scheme of things, there has not been a conflict worth using them for just yet.
What is the geopolitical situation in Sonic the Hedgehog? Technically, the series takes place on Earth, but it’s a little different. Instead of the United States, there is the United Federation, instead of Greece there is Apotos, and instead of Africa there is Mazuri, because even the fun cartoon animal game cannot keep itself from generalizing the entire African continent into one entity. These countries are predominantly inhabited by humans, who live on the continents, and the animal-people (like Sonic and friends) live on small offshore islands. There has never been an explanation for why this separation exists, and while it could be fun to explore potential reasons, that is not the point of this paper!
Dr. Eggman typically begins his campaigns of world domination on these islands. He captures small animals to be used as batteries in his machines and builds extractive industrial plants, such as oil refineries and chemical plants. Sonic opposes him in the earlier games because he is harming the environment, and this has turned into a standard rivalry as the games have continued and Eggman’s evil plans have grown in scale. As soon as the games give the characters spoken dialogue in Sonic Adventure, Eggman’s schemes move away from resource extraction and towards using huge weapons and awakened ancient gods in order to conquer the planet. This is where the weapons of mass destruction come into play.
The first depiction of a WMD in Sonic the Hedgehog is in Sonic Adventure, where Eggman attempts to murder-suicide Station Square (in-universe San Francisco) by firing a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) at the city while he is still in it. He does this because he is upset that his plan failed, although perhaps he was attempting to show us mercy by wiping all the Silicon Valley bros off the face of the planet. Regardless of exact intention, his attempt to nuke Station Square says a lot about his perspective on nuclear war, which will be discussed below.
When dealing with an enemy, their perception of you and their own weapons are crucial to understand. The norm in nuclear doctrine is that nuclear weapons are used in retaliation to extremely high levels of threat. However, this has not always been the case—in the 1950s, they were generally perceived as really big bombs that could be used in combination with normal artillery. This theory was emphasized most by the radically anti-communist William Borden, also famous for testifying against Oppenheimer in his security clearance review, who argued that nuclear war will target military infrastructure and end when one side in the conflict has run out of weapons. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the United States to possess as many weapons as possible because it is the quantity they possess that will render them victorious. City-busting occurs after the war, when you are free to hurt your enemy’s civilian population without fear of retaliation. Or, perhaps, when you have nothing left to lose—which is exactly what happened in Eggman’s case.
Borden predicted that nuclear weapons states would disperse their launchers and military bases to make them harder to strike. He likewise predicted the use of nuclear missile-equipped submarines (SSBNs), which are used strategically for second strikes; submarines are hard to find, and can be positioned close to the enemy, making them very useful for retaliation. This is precisely in line with Eggman’s attack in Sonic Adventure 1, which used an SSBN close to the enemy’s civilian population as a last resort punishment after he incurred heavy losses. Whether or not this was a smart thing for Eggman to do is up in the air—the SLBM appeared to be an attempted surface burst on a city, which would actually minimize casualties when compared to an air burst detonation, so it is very likely that he cares more about building cool bombs than understanding how to use them properly—but it is clear that he is a champion of the Borden expectations of nuclear warfare nonetheless!
Eggman’s arguably insane, vengeful attack on Station Square stokes fears of nuclear armageddon that were hyper-present during the Cold War. Although he has been referred to as Dr. Eggman exclusively so far in this essay, this is not the case in Sonic Adventure—Tails, the character present in the city while the attack happens, refers to him as “Dr. Robotnik”. The character’s “real” name is Ivo Robotnik, which was given to him by American translators in lieu of “Eggman” when the classic games first released. It may not be surprising that American translators at the end of the Cold War decided to give an industrialist who primarily wears red an Eastern European sounding name. Russians are disproportionately featured as enemies in video games, eclipsing both the Axis Powers (typically Germany or Japan) and Arabs (as terrorists) in studied games. In wartime, framing one’s enemies as irrational is a core component of propaganda. Depicting someone named “Robotnik” as a self-driven madman who is willing to nuke an entire city when he loses feeds into assumptions that the enemies of the United States are not rational, which is then used to justify US hegemony on the international scene—someone has to keep these unruly states in line! This is especially true for the non-proliferation regime, which has been regarded by some states as neocolonial. India, a nuclear weapons state, has argued that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is discriminatory because it does not ban vertical proliferation. This stance generally purports that non-proliferation treaties are used to keep nuclear weapons out of “undesirable” hands while allowing nuclear weapons states to maintain and build on their own stockpile (vertical proliferation). Fears of certain states (such as Iran or North Korea) acquiring arsenals are presented as imminent dangers because enemies of the United States are always inherently irrational, and therefore cannot be trusted with such powerful weapons. The idea of “rationality” has been weaponized in service of white supremacy—and to a lesser extent, the patriarchy—for centuries and it should surprise no one that an international nonproliferation regime, largely built by and for states who were founded and are sustained on the premise of white supremacy, would prop up inequality and keep nuclear weapons only in the hands of those who “deserve” them. Although Russia is not a victim of this regime, it is frequently depicted as irrational and untrustworthy with nuclear weapons. Robotnik’s attack on Station Square is reminiscent of this rhetoric.
Of course, Sonic is a Japanese video game, which should grant it some leniency in the depiction of a nuclear attack as inherently irrational and violent. But for American players, who are meant to perceive this as an attack on a fictionalized version of their country, the implications are more specifically anti-Russian.
Sonic Adventure 2 flips this script a bit: as it would turn out, Eggman is American, and members of his extended family were killed in a coverup operation by the Sonic equivalent of the US military, Guardian Unit of Nations—typically abbreviated to GUN. His grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, was commissioned to research immortality and weapons of mass destruction aboard the space colony ARK. One of his creations was the Eclipse Cannon, a giant laser capable of destroying the planet.
Between games, Eggman has seemingly underwent the same attitude shift as every other NWS during the Cold War, because he has now discovered that WMDs can be used to threaten your enemies into getting what you want. On the ARK, Eggman activates the Eclipse Cannon and does the following:
1. Uses its laser to destroy part of the moon in a show of force;
2. Threatens to use it against the Earth unless he is crowned emperor of the planet;
3. Gives Earth 24 hours to accept.
Did Bernard Brodie predict the plot of Sonic Adventure 2? In his earliest work The Absolute Weapon, he argued that the absolute power of a nuclear bomb would make wars too costly to fight. The primary purpose for governments would therefore be to avoid war at all costs, since any of them could result in devastating nuclear war. Brodie also wrote many pieces laying out strategies of nuclear deterrence, which continue to be used to this day.
There is a common knee-jerk reaction to Eggman’s story that I see in fan discussions of the game. Many comments feature the following logic: “Why would Eggman blow up the planet he wants to rule? Either the writer is stupider than me, or Eggman is lying!” This is a very understandable way to perceive his threat with the Eclipse Cannon—why would someone make such an unreasonable threat? Does he really expect it to work? Who is going to buy this?
The game provides no insight into the general reaction to this by the world’s governments. However, Sonic and friends believe his threat right away, and race to the ARK to stop him. They are correct to do so—Eggman does end up trying to use the Eclipse Cannon against the Earth, but it does not work because Gerald Robotnik programmed it to fail if ever used. Therefore, we know that Eggman was not bluffing about his threat to destroy the planet at all. We know that he was actually going to do it. So, why do fans of the game continue to argue that Eggman’s threat was pointless?
Bernard Brodie’s concept of the absolute weapon has become the mainstream view of WMDs in the public consciousness. We fear nuclear weapons because of their destructive power and believe that no conflict could ever require their deployment. We believe other NWS hold the same concerns. This perspective is then projected onto Eggman by fans, who mistakenly assume he should foster the same feelings about WMDs. The assumption that Eggman was not willing to go through with his plan, or that the world’s governments would not surrender to him, requires Eggman to value his own life over the success of his empire. The first Sonic Adventure game has Eggman attempt to nuke a city he is standing in. A suicidal, last-ditch plan to take over the world is perfectly in-line with his character. What is the point of living if he cannot have his way? What is the point of a planet’s existence if he is not the one in charge? These are the questions driving Eggman’s decisions in the games.
Sonic Adventure 2 does not reject Brodie’s theories, but does provide a counterargument: deterrence breaks down when one’s ambitions outgrow the potential retaliation for acting upon them. Eggman’s dream of ruling the world was stronger than his will to live. Mortal terror was not enough to curb his imperial ambitions, and the Earth was almost destroyed as consequence of this perspective.
When the two games are measured against one another, it becomes apparent that Eggman has taken a very clear stance on the Borden-Brodie debate: he is a supporter of the Borden perspective on nuclear war! He does not believe in absolute deterrence and treats WMDs as usable tools in his arsenal, even at a potential detriment to himself. His actions in Sonic Adventure 2 align his views with one of Borden’s biggest theories: the winner of a nuclear war will not be the state who inflicts the most damage on their enemy, but rather the one who does not run out of nuclear weapons first. Eggman is determined to be the last one standing—even if it means standing alone atop the ashes of the world.

Turning Doom au
this au was inspired by @cyucya fan kid au and the movie Turing Red
I’ve started writing the fic for this but I don’t know when I’ll will be finished with it, but I’ve got ideas that I’ve been dying to show
Skylar inherited Shadow’s Black Arms DNA (Spark did not she did inherit Sonic speed tho) It laid dormant till he was 13.
This au is set in April and May of 2001 seeing as the turning red movie is set in 2002 I thought this would be a cool little reference to sonic adventure 2 game
Shadow and Sonic are better parents here. They still have there issues but you can see how much they love their children and how their relationship with them is a lot better
Shadow is pretty much a helicopter parent (manly to Skylar-Chil). He is overprotective of Sklyar due to him having no powers and having Black Arms DNA
With how Shadow was raised in the Ark he treats his kids like they’re in the military. He not like hard core military with them only when it comes to getting ready or following a schedule does he act like that
Shadow and Skylar are a lot closer. From when he was little Skylar has always looked up to Shadow. When he was younger he would follow Shadow everywhere and copy his every move ( like in that episode of Bluey “copy cat”) Shadow never said it out loud but made him really happy
Skylar is an A+ student
Skylar goes to Green Hills Middle school
Shadow still works for gun but he manly works in the office or training new recruits. Sonic didn’t want him getting seriously hue or worse while they had kids. He is only on the field if absolutely necessary
Sonic is a stay at home dad. He doesn’t fight Eggman anymore since he retired
Eggman is “considered” family (loosely) he wanted to give Sage the family he never got to have. Sonic and Shadow said okay as long as he quite being evil. He became a mix of himself and Mr Tinker
Spark and Skylar have a good sibling relationship. They watch cartoons, play together and look out for each other. Skylar dose find Spark to be annoying from time to time
Skylar’s family call him SC for short and his friends call him SK for short (he thinks SK sounds cooler than SC)
Skylar does taekwondo (TKD for short). He’s a red belt, best in his class, has won multiple sparring and poomsae competition. He prefers doing the and free style competitions, he enjoys perfecting the moves for the poomsae comps. But his favourite is the Freestyle Poomsae, he enjoys doing his poomsae routine to music and thinks it the coolest thing ever (which it is). He’s not a fan of sparring though. He enjoys going to his sparring class and everyone is super supportive and friendly but he hates the sparring comps. He only does that because of Shadow and he prefers Skylar do sparring over poomsae
It was Shadow’s idea to put Skylar in TKD so that he could protect himself. He worries for Skylar’s safety a lot with him having no “powers” and all.
That’s all I got for now, I’ll do a post on Skylar- Chilli friends either this week or next. If you guys have any questions let me know I’ll love to hear what you guys think 😊
