'Weet-Bix #1' - Acrylic on Board 30x30cm / Shadow Box Framed 35x35cm 2020. Availaible - Link in Bio. . In the mid 1920’s Arthur Shannon of Grain Products Limited found a gap in the market. The people at Sanitarium were purists and vowed to never add sugar to any of their biscuits. Therefore, Shannon took to creating ‘Weet-Bix’, rivaling Sanitarium’s unsweetened ‘Granose’. . Weet-Bix was sold locally by horse and cart and was available in grocers on consignment. The breakfast biscuit became so popular that by 1928 it had decimated Sanitariums market and they had no option but to purchase the business. It is rumoured that the pressure was put on Shannon to sell by business partners who were also members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, proclaiming it was preventing the “work” of the church. . After the depression in the 1930’s, 1 in 3 Australian’s were unemployed. Sanitarium decided to offer coupons inside every tin, these could be traded in for household goods such as cookware and linen. During WW2, soldiers in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific were sent boxes as rations. Later in the 1950’s Sir Edmund Hillary was recorded as the first man to reach the summit of Mt Everest, he ate Weet-Bix for breakfast each day of the climb. Weet-Bix are still a family classic, putting the vim and vigour into every breakie. #donovanchristie #visualartist #art #artist #painting #ghostsign #signage #vintagesignage #handpaint #signwriting #advertising #weetbix #sanitarium #weetbixkid #cornerstore #milkbar (at Parramatta Road) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_mOzfoDfdL/?igshid=124vd2pmf8al4

Going ‘old school~ish’ for breakfast this morning. Probably been about 8 years since a scoffed a weet-bix stack for brekky. Made for a happy and sunny start to my Sunday! #weetbixkid . I give myself permission to be bad and eat processed, packaged food sometimes. It is Christmas after all? And at Christmas, you eat what you want. 🎄 . #breakfast #nutrition #vegetarian #vegan #eattherainbow #foodie #foodiegram #foodblogger #foodismedicine #foodiesofinstagram #healthcoach #healthyfood #healthyeating #healthychoices #healthylifestyle #holistichealth #holisticnutrition #wellness #wellnesswarrior #melbournefoodie #wholefood #realfood #sundaymorning #coconutmilk #weetbix #brekkie #sundaybreakfast #glutenfree #dairyfree #wheatfree (at Brighton, Victoria, Australia)
