Fan Reading Project Recruitment!
Are you a fan, especially a femslash fan, who's interested in reading a funky little (~30 pp.) piece of 19th C. mass-popular literature serialized over several weeks? If so, I've got the project for you! Join us for a casual, opt-in reading group of a short 19th C. dime novel, beginning January 15, 2024!
You can sign up here if you're interested!
More on the Project:
I'm a PhD Candidate in English and Women's and Gender Studies working on a dissertation on nineteenth-century American working-class women, queer pleasure and possibility, and mass-popular literature. As part of my project, I've spent a lot of time in archives reading 19th C. story papers and dime novels, genres of degraded literature that were incredibly popular among factory and mill workers but that have received very little scholarly attention. What's fascinating is how similar this mass-popular literature is to fan fiction--not just in its sensational plots and queer elements (sometimes there really is just one bed in the cabin), but especially in how it was consumed (often in serial format, shared amongst exuberant, fannish communities who even had their own shipping wars in the letters to the editor columns!) and in how it was critiqued (before Anthony Comstock came for pornography, he led a whole campaign against this kind of literature as "perverting" and tending to promote "evil reading"). Although I'm a fan myself, I know that one person's readings can never fully capture the wide variety of responses and interpretations that a whole group of fans and consumers can have, which is where you all come in! For the final chapter of my dissertation, I'll be serially disseminating chapters of a short dime novel for a group of participants to discuss in a private Discord to explore the creative possibilities of fan reading practices.
You're welcome to be as involved as you would like - maybe you just end up reading along and reacting to the comments of others, or perhaps you find yourself writing fan meta or even making memes and other creative responses! If you have any questions, feel free to DM me here!
If you'd like to sign up (which doesn't obligate you to participate), you can use the following Qualtrics link, which provides more information about the project, including the study number for the IRB-issued exemption: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1HAkpIJDEaUfWOa

The first chapter of Kaitou Joker Encore is already out! And you can read it here! In japanese, obviously. It's about 45 pages, the next chapter is stated for 5/15, so I assume this gonna be monthly release (thanks god) This one pays homage to 1st chapter of original, so wonder if following ones will also have/follow some references to that.

Sunset Vol 2 Issue 20 is up for general audiences!
Tumblr media
Cover art by my fantastic co-writer @touloserlautrec!
In which the crew gets their first lesson into their new life.
This issue is also the reason the song Dirty Knife by Neko Case is on the Volume 2 Soundtrack.
He sang nursery rhymes To paralyze The wolves that eddy out the corner of his eyes But they squared him frozen where he stood In the glow of the furniture Piled high for firewood And the blood runs crazy With giant strides
And a huge thank you to our Patrons who got access to Issue 21 today on Patreon!
Sunset taglist. I try to keep it to release updates, long excerpts, and character profiles. Please comment/dm for +/-

seriously I'm so tired of netflix releasing half seasons and also the 8 episode run becoming the norm. like awwww did the studios not like when the mean scary unions asked for better working terms and better pay for the kind of production level they wanted and now they're hemorrhaging cash even more than usual because they didn't respect their work force enough to listen to them in the first place and now they're shooting their consumer base in the foot by- on top of a million changes that are going to hurt their subscription numbers unequivocally in the long run- short change the consumer for an incomplete product that they have to release in sections because their instant binge release schedule was not sustainable as a business model??? awwwwww pooor babyyyyyy get FUCKED.

It's not always easy to come up with cover designs, but after a lot of brainstorming, this one hit me and felt right. It's definitely not my typical style these days, but it was fun to go back to some of my old roots.
Anyway, issue seventeen is up on AO3 and Wattpad. Jake is about to have a rough time of it, and Alex and Reeve take a moment.
And you can find issue eighteen on Patreon (where we post early access to story and art, and lots of other extras), in which the Church finally makes its introduction!

Weekly Update (18/8/2024)
Hello hello, everyone! I was supposed to have published this a few hours ago as it's Monday here already, but alas! This will be a shorter post, just updating what I've been up to this past week :)
Surprisingly, I haven't touched a book besides finishing The Unwomanly Face of War. It was such an impactful book, and I think it mentally prepared me to finally watch Come and See which has been on my movie bucket list for years now. The things told there are brutal and will make you cry for these women who gave so much for their motherland only to be ignored after the war is over. Definitely a new favorite, 4 stars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of reading! I finished 2 more Visual Novels, and dropped another. The DNF goes to The Fruit of Grisaiaā€”it had everything to be good and keep me hooked, but the reliance in anime archetypes had me bored out of my mind. So sorry to all the Grisaia fans! Anyway, during the first days I also finished Sexcalibur: Knights of the Pound Table, which was another dumb smut, and one I deeply hated having to read. It was so lazy and in my humble opinion, not sexy at all. Would have DNFed it but I did end up skipping a lot of H-Scenes by the end of the game. 2 stars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other 2 VNs were Queen of Moths and un/FRAGMENT. Two very short reads, perfect for a weekend session! Queen of Moths is more of a Pixel Art Horror game. It plays a lot like those older point and click games but, as short as it was, it still makes you tense and ready for a scare. I enjoyed it! 3 stars. un/FRAGMENT. is another short game, more of a linear story this time. It was made for Nanoreno, so the dev only had 5 days to make everything. It was only 10-minute long and had the dev more time to develop the story more, I think it would have been a pretty decent work. The art is pretty nice, and the reveal was not all that bad, although my emotional connection to the character's feelings suffered from my short exposure to the story.
Tumblr media
I also started Needy Streamer Overload and it's been so fun! It's definitely keeping me past my screen time limit but it's been a while since I've been this addicted to a game. It's somewhat dark and if you're not in a good space mentally, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm almost done with all the 22 endings! I can't wait for another game from the same devs called Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis to release. I'm SO excited for that one specifically, since I can properly relate to the protagonist's struggles more (though that's not a good thing, necessarily LOL)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As commissioned by @diowatcher, I've been watching Serial Experiments Lain and I'm currently on episode 6. It's getting extra trippy right now, and I'm enjoying it a lot! The opening is so gooooood, I can't believe I had never heard it before. I've also been listening to the opening to Revolutionary Girl Utena and aagh it's so good! I'm adding it to my anime list.
Tumblr media
And finally, I watched the 2020's The Boys in the Band yesterday. It was SO GOOD!! I had no idea this was a cinema adaptation of the Broadway revival, but it makes so much sense; it reminds me of the Falsettos stage revival, though that one doesn't have a movie adaptation, as far as I'm aware.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it was truly a queer movieā€”as depressing as ever. It was an open ending too, ugh! I have a love/hate with queer works, as they have only started to become a bit more lighthearted these past years. I love these darker stories, but they also leave me bleeding (figuratively.) This is going to my favorites!
And that is all for last week! Let's see what this one brings us~

Slowly more and more glad I waited so long to start working on Motley, because it is much much much easier to draw these characters consistently now that I've been doing it for so long lol. Simple artstyle + silly designs = I can bust out 10 panels in, like, 10 minutes, easy peasy.
I was worried about making long chapters time-wise but maybe it'll actually be fine lol

The main problem with having OCā€™s is not having established canon for others to interact with. Youā€™ve just got this punch of people you have Ideas for and Thoughts about, so you shout into the digital void and hope someone hears the echoes

Sunset Vol 2 (High Noon) Issue 14 is up on AO3 and Wattpad!
CW: This issue contains graphic descriptions of gore and monster violence. For those who'd prefer to skip the intense gore parts, we are offering two versions of Issue 14: ā–The original version ā–A censored version that I'm calling Gore Liteā„¢ Please be aware, the censored version *is still gory and violent*--there's no getting around that--but the censored version has had the more intense sections omitted. The original version is available on AO3, Patreon, and Wattpad. The Gore Liteā„¢ version is available on AO3 and Patreon.
And as always, the next issue (Issue 15) is already up for our lovely Patrons! <3
Thank you all for reading!

Somewhere Else Coffee Shop AU snippets, part 3 (aka I'm still actively writing this and keep finishing bits I want to share):
--
It's been just over two months since Jon came in. Your heart still clenches when you see a customer come in with long salt and pepper hair or a jean jacket, but otherwise, you've nearly managed to stop thinking about them at all. Even if you hadn't, you would have had very little brain to think about them today. It's the lunch rush, and the weather outside is abysmal, a stinging rain that is whipped about by the wind so it patters hard against the windows. The manager has compensated by cranking the heating, with the result that it is absolutely sweltering inside. Everyone in line is impatient and wet and grumpy, and you in turn are sweating through your jumper, focusing all your mental energy on getting the orders in right and not snapping at the more entitled customers who think if they berate you the register will somehow work faster.
You are focused enough that you're not paying attention to the line beyond the person in front of you, so this time it's your turn to start in surprise and delight when you look up to the next person and discover it's Jon.
Their hair is up in a bun this time, a little damp and frizzy from the rain, and a couple strands coming loose on either side of their face. They're wearing the same jacket, this time over a T-shirt for a band or maybe a podcastā€”something you don't recognize.Ā
You can't help smiling when you see them.
"Oh, hello!"
They don't startle like last timeā€”they don't even seem surprised to see you at the register again. They smile a little, and their smile still has that sadness to it, but it's different now. Maybe a little resigned, or rueful.
"Hello," they say softly.
"Earl grey tea, wasn't it? With milk and honey?"Ā
They glance up at you in surprise. "Oh, um, yes, that'sā€“you remembered?"
You can feel the heat rising in your cheeksā€”it's only now you realize it might be a bit strange that you remembered their order after only one interaction.
"Well, yeah. I-I've got a good memory forā€”for orders. Andā€“umā€”and that."
This is not fully a lie; you are fairly good at remembering what people like. But it usually takes you more than one time to get it right.Ā
From the moment you saw them, there was very little danger of you forgetting Jon.
When you make Jon's drink, you hesitate for a moment before adding milk and honey the same as before. They seemed to like it last time, and there is something satisfying about preparing the cup to their liking, rather than just handing it to them with the bag still in it.
They take the cup from you with both hands and that same soft smile. It feels like an achievement, somehow, getting that smile from them, and it fills you with a sort of fizzy warmth.
They open their mouth to thank you, and then they stop, staring at their name where you've written it on the side of the cup. You realize you hadn't asked them for their name, this time, and you wonder if maybe they find it strange that you remembered their name as well as their order. Or maybe you spelled it wrongā€”you hadn't even thought to ask.
"Did I get it wrong? I know most people spell it with the 'h', but for some reason I thoughtā€”"
"No, no," they say. "You got it right. Mostā€”most people don't."
"Oh, good."Ā
Before you can say anything else, they say, "Well, um, thank you," and nod awkwardly before making a beeline for the door.
--
Martin,
I went back.
I'm sure you're very surprised.
I tried to stay away, I really did. For weeks I avoided that part of town completely (easy enough, really, as it's mostly overpriced coffee shops and oddly specific boutiques). I did my best to keep myself busy.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the way you made my tea.
I know it probably doesn't mean anything. I know it's foolish to hope. But you looked as startled as I was at what you had done, and I couldn't help wondering if maybe, if I just went backā€¦
Of course, it wasn't that simple. There wasn't a magic moment where you looked me in the eye and suddenly everything came back.
But you remembered me.
Not fully, not in the way I'd hoped, butā€”you remembered I'd been there before. You remembered my order.
You remembered my name.
Hope is such a dangerous thing, Martin. Despair feels safer, because if you have already given up then you know you can never be disappointed. With hope, there is always something left to lose. With hope, there also always comes fear.
I've told myself not to expect anything, not to hope for too much, because I'm so afraid of what will happen if that hope proves false.
But I can't help it. You remembered my name, and Iā€”
I can't help but hope.
I love you. Thank you for the tea.
Jon
