HAPPY 42ND BIRTHDAY TO HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES, WILLIAM ARTHUR PHILIP LOUIS ♡

On 21 June 1982, Prince William was born to Diana and Charles, then known as Prince and Princess of Wales in St Mary's Hospital, London, at at 21:03 BST. He was born during the reign of his paternal grandmother Elizabeth II and was the first child born to a Prince and Princess of Wales since Prince John's birth in July 1905.

The little prince's name was announced on 28 June as William Arthur Philip Louis. Wills was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, on 4 August.

William studied at Jane Mynors' nursery school and Wetherby School in London before joining Ludgrove. He was subsequently admitted to Eton College, studying geography, biology, and history at the A-level.

The Prince undertook a gap year taking part in British Army training exercises in Belize, working on English dairy farms, and as part of the Raleigh International programme in southern Chile, William worked for ten weeks on local construction projects and taught English.

In 2001, William enrolled at the University of St Andrews, initially to study Art History but then changed his field of study to Geography with the support of the love of his life Catherine Elizabeth Middleton who he met while at school.

Will and Cat fell in love during their time at uni, and married at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011. The couple have three adorable cupcakes Prince George (b.2013), Princess Charlotte (b.2015) and Prince Louis (b.2018). The family of five divide time between their official residence, Kensington Palace and their two private residences - Amner Hall & Adelaide Cottage.

After university, William trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In 2008, he graduated from the Royal Air Force College Cranwell and joined the RAF Search and Rescue Force in early 2009. He transferred to RAF Valley, Anglesey, to receive training on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter, which made him the first member of the British royal family since Henry VII to live in Wales.

During his active career as a Search and Rescue Pilot, William conducted 156 search and rescue operations, which resulted in 149 people being rescued. He then served as a full-time pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance starting in July 2015, donating his full salary to the EAAA charity.

Working with all branches of the military, he holds the ranks of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, Commander in the Navy and Wing Commander in the Air-Force

Upon their wedding, WillCat became HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Earl and Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Lady Carrickfergus. He became the heir apparent on 8 September 2022, receiving the titles of the Duke of Cornwall & The Duke of Rothesay. William & Catherine were made The Prince and Princess of Wales by Kimg Charles on 9 September 2022. Additionally, William also became the Prince & High Steward of Scotland, Earl of Chester, Earl of Carrick, Lord of the Isles, and Baron Renfrew.

As well as undertaking royal duties in support of The King, both in the UK and overseas, The Prince devotes his time supporting a number of charitable causes and organisations with some of his key areas of interest being Mental health, Conservation, Homelessness, Sports and Emergency Workers.

He has undertaken several overseas trips representing the monarch, covering a wide array of countries like Australia, Canada, Namibia, Malaysia, South Africa, Tanzania, Pakistan Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, France, India, The Bahamas, Belize, Afghanistan etc ; He is also is also a founder of various initiatives like United For Wildlife, Heads Together, Earthshot and Homewards.

Chocolate in Mesoamerica

Chocolate was one of the most desired foods of Mesoamerica and was consumed by the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec civilizations, amongst others. Its consumption even spread via trade routes to other parts of the Americas including the Chaco Canyon in modern New Mexico. The earliest known use of chocolate was by the Olmec around 1900 BCE and, enjoyed as a drink, it was drunk from special round jars known as tecomates. The Maya used tall cylinder beakers for drinking chocolate, and these very often had text on the rim indicating their intended use. The Aztecs also had richly decorated tall cups specifically reserved for chocolate drinks. It may be that such conspicuous vessels were designed to impress onlookers that the drinker had the means and status to enjoy such a prized drink.

Cultivation & Value

Chocolate is made from the beans of cacao pods from the Theobroma cacao tree (actually native to South America) which was first cultivated in extensive orchards near the Pacific and Gulf coasts of Central America, especially in the Xoconusco region and the valleys of the Sarstoon, Polochic, and Motagua Rivers (modern Guatemala and Belize), where the tree thrives in the warm and humid climate. There were, in fact, four varieties of cacao bean or cacahuatl, as the Aztecs knew them, and the corruption of this word or their term for the chocolate drink - xocolatl - is probably the origin of the word chocolate.

So esteemed was chocolate that beans were a commonly traded item, very often demanded as tribute from subject tribes and even used as a form of currency by the Aztecs. In fact, cacao beans were so valuable that they were even counterfeited either to pass as currency or, even more fiendishly, hollowed out of their valuable interior and refilled with a substitute such as sand. As a currency, we know that in the Aztec markets one cacao bean could buy you a single tomato, 30 beans got you a rabbit and, for the more ambitious shopper, a turkey could be had for 200 beans.

As an expensive import then, chocolate was drunk mainly by the upper classes and consumed after meals, typically accompanied by the smoking of tobacco. It may have been enjoyed mixed with maize gruel by the poorer classes at important events such as weddings, but some scholars maintain that the pure chocolate drink was an exclusive status symbol of the nobility. Curiously, it could even be given to favoured sacrificial victims as a final treat before they departed this world, for example, at the annual Aztec festival of Panquetzaliztli held in honour of Huitzilopochtli.

What would you title your biography? I had a blog back in the day called "Keely's Feelings" and I'd probably reuse that

What are the first three things you'd do if you were invisible? Okay so first of all I would panic?? And then I would probably desperately try to get people to notice me (I'd try writing, for example). And then finally I would not wear a bra

What subject do you wish was taught in every school? Okay I was just talking to some older coworkers about equity?? What the fuck is equity? Why do I need to buy a townhome?

When was the last time you tried something for the first time and what was it? Ummmm I applied for my first ever promotion last night--does that count? (Send me good vibes please ✨)

What is the most underrated city you have ever visited? Oh gee I dunno. The only thing coming to mind is Belize City because Belize is so tiny? Do people like Belize?

What day in your life would you like to relive? I would like to reDO my wedding day because exmormon religious things...Relive? 🤨🤷🏼‍♀️

If you could eliminate one thing from your daily routine, what would it be and why? Cooking bye I hate it

How long would you last in a zombie apocalypse? Okay I don't understand why all these people in media have such an intense will to live? If there's an apocalypse (zombie or other), count me out. (Not that I don't want to live in general but like...ya know?)

What would be the most surprising scientific discovery imaginable? Um first thought is intelligent extraterrestrial life. As an alien truther I don't know if it'd be the most surprising, per se, but I do think it would be pretty significant

If you could have any view out your office window, what would you choose? God please just give me a window! Um I'd love a little forest or an ocean or a nice lake or a whole bunch of pretty flowers 🥰

Checking in on my 2023 goals!

23 things for 2023

1. buy 1 horse

Done!! Bought Luna!!!

2. Knit a pair of socks

I knit a sock, that I finished today. But I mostly decided I wanted to knit other things instead so this is fine

3. Three camping trips

went to mt of the holy cross, and New Mexico for two camping nights, plus a day hike in winter park. So technically no but pretty close!

4. Plant four pumpkins

…..no. I bought seeds and did nothing and I don’t feel that bad about it

5. Handstand (five fingers) press

Lol no. Did nothing for it. Never made a plan and so did not achieve

6. Kill side yard weeds (because weeds are the devil 666)

Success? I paid a Gardner to pull them all so yes! Feels like a failure because I didn’t really deal with them or the yard in general, but they are all gone now.

7. Go to Loyola social justice meeting (7th heaven)

I went to a meeting! And baked cookies for an event. (And then never went back oops)

8. Mail 8 letters to mates - birthday cards probably

Success! (Rebecca birthday, Sarah birthday, Clare get well card, Callie birthday, Alison birthday, clare birthday, Callie wedding, clare kt recipe card)

9. Research 9 hours of getting a cat (9 lives)

Decided a horse was enough so stopped researching 🤷‍♀️[ read complete guide to adopting a cat 3 hours]

10. Do ten full pull ups

Total yes, in a row like intended absolutely not. I can do like 2.5 in a row. Made haphazard progress, but now I have a pull up bar so hoping for better next year!

11. Buy 11 things off of my to buy eventually list

Success! This was easy and I did it! (air fryer, air mattress, nice soap dispensers, office mat, thermometer, fire extinguisher, white tank top, little plates, shower cleaner, plastic drain pipes, sheet pan organizer, bonus: back door light bulb, rainbow flag and holder, more bras)

12. Go on 12 dates

Success! I thought this would be really hard but then I just got my boyfriend by like February and it ended up being the easiest ny resolution ever. He even asked me out to start.

13. Run a half marathon 13.1 miles

Success! (Okay this was a gimme because I signed up for it and had a training plan in 2022 but still)

14. Hike a fourteener

Success! mt of the holy cross and it was terrifying and very long but we did it!

15. Read 30 (15x2) books

I read 27 and have three in various states of completion. I kind of wanted to power this one thru but it wouldn’t have been fun and then what’s the point. This one is hard because I abandoned so so many books this year. Like I made it at least one chapter into like 40 and a couple half way thru. So close but no cigar but I refuse to read things that aren’t fun just to hit a goal so I feel fine about it.

16. Host 8 things

Hosted 3, organized a couple others so partial credit. I would like to do better in the future. ( galentines, whimsy brunch, birthday, organized brunch at watercourse, organized lake day)

17. Go out dancing (must be more dancing than drinking, dance class counts.)(dancing queen only 17)

Nope. But also that’s fine.

18. Upgrade phone and deal with all photos. Upload belize to fb and save others. Data management

Mostly. I got an external storage for Christmas so I can finish when I get home. So solid partial credit. (uploaded some. Upgraded phone plus new battery, still need to get data off of it) [email protected] [email protected]

19. General contractor for house cracks plus install air conditioner

Success. Installed ac. Got the cracks looked at once and they were fine and then they got worse and now I’m getting foundation work done. So success I guess.

20. Get 20 layout ds

… I did not count. I def got some but probably not 20 so partial credit. (4 from leiout)

21. Go to frisbee Masters regionals

Success! Another bit of gimme but we went and qualified to nationals!)

22. Buy purple navel jewelry (I’m feeling 22)

Success! (And I love it)

23. volunteer for 23 hours

No and I feel bad about it. I need to find something to volunteer with. I feel like I should have the time/be able to make time but it also feels like I never have time and also never want to. But I think it’s important.

So overall full success on 11 of the goals, happy partial on 5, annoyed partial on 2, abandoned 4 and failed my last one and feel bad about it.

But overall pretty good success!

Part 1: USA

Hello everyone! Happy pride month!

Last month I stated that coming June I would post about historical queer events around the world. This is part 1 of North America. Later today I will post parts 2 & 3, Belize and Greenland. The pride month calendar can be seen in our pinned post!

That being said, I'm excited to show you what I've been working on. (Also thanks Mom for helping me edit this)

Stonewall Inn was one of many bars in Greenwich Village, New York City. It, just like many others, was owned by the Genovese crime family, the local mafia. The family thought it would be profitable to cater towards the gay citizens, shunned by most every other bar and person. Police had been bribed to ignore it, and on the occasions that they did raid the bar, ‘dirty’ cops would send a tip.

June 28th 1969, Stonewall Inn had just experienced a routine raid a couple days before. Officers burst in carrying a warrant, and arrested thirteen people. In order to check if they were truly ‘cross-dressing’, female officers would take them into the bathroom and have them strip

Usually when this happened everyone would let it go, they’d be mad, but they wouldn’t do anything. This time, however, an officer had hit a butch lesbian(widely assumed to be Stormé DeLarverie), in the head with a baton while getting her into the car. She yelled for the onlookers to act, and they did. Bottles, stones, pennies, and other things were thrown at the police. Among the first to throw them were two trans lesbians of color, Sylvia Rivera and Marsha Johnshon. The officers boarded themselves in the Inn, but the crowd had begun setting it on fire. Not long later, the firemen and riot control came and took control of the situation.

This event may be the one we are most familiar with, but it’s not the only thing that happened. Here are some links to other events that happened shortly before and after.

Back in 1987, the AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epidemic had just been labeled an epidemic. There were very few treatments, and only one FDA approved one. This treatment, called AZT (zidovudine) , was only manufactured by one company. Burroughs Wellcome, a pharmaceutical company, had made the drug nigh inaccessible. The price was so high, that very few people could afford it.

ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), was created in response to this. Larry Kramer was among the ones to originate this movement. The activist groups scheduled a march on Wall Street in 1987, scheduled to disrupt traffic during the morning rush hour. Activists laid in the street and held signs, chanting phrases like “We are angry, we want action”, and “Release those drugs.” Seventeen activists were arrested, but shortly afterwards the FDA announced it would lower the required time for drugs to be approved from nine years, to seven.

In June of 2015, gay marriage was legalized by the supreme court in the landmark case Obergefell v. Hodges, forcing fourteen states to legalize same-sex marriage.

The case started in 2013, when James Obergefell and his husband John Arthur James, filed a lawsuit in Ohio when they realized that their marriage would not be recognized on Arthur's death certificate. During the lawsuit, Arthur, who had a terminal illness, passed.

Plaintiffs told Obergefell that state officials were not going to approve his name being on Arthur’s death certificate, but filed the complaint anyway. The judge the case went to, Judge Timothy Black, granted Obergefell a temporary order that would allow Arthur to be marked as wed.

The plaintiffs and Judge Black were not happy with this however, and the plaintiffs amended their complaint, adding two more plaintiffs. They asked that Ohio declare that their refusal to honor out of state marriages on death certificates, was unconstitutional and asked that they would fix it. Judge Black also declared it unconstitutional and banned the state from enforcing it upon the plaintiffs.

The department of health director Wymyslo appealed this, but was unable to see the case through. As was his successor Lance Himes. Himes’ successor Hodges was the one to finally see the case in court, where it was appealed.

Obergefell filed a petition for a Writ of Certiorari with the supreme court, in 2014. In January of 2015, the Supreme Court granted it, allowing the case to be heard. The Supreme Court, decided after much deliberation, to recognize same-sex marriage as a right under the fourteenth amendment.

A place you’ve been that you want to go back to: I would like to go back to Japan, especially Kofu, Kyoto, and Fujiyoshida. Kofu was my group’s home base and I loved it. I also want to see Kyoto again and I miss being very close to Mt. Fuji at Fujiyoshida. I would also like to return to the rainforests in Belize, and see my tribe's Homeland in the warmer months when there is more flora, too. I miss Salem, MA too. It was a pretty town with a rich history like the Witch Trials.

Something you want: Peace and healing for the Earth and all life on it. I also really want my family, friends (IRL and online), and pets to be happy, safe, and live long and healthy lives. I think about them every day and I love them so.

I also want you all to be safe, happy, loved, live a long life and be healthy.

Currently working on: One of my research papers, which is on community-based participatory research and tribally-driven research frameworks. I need to prep my presentations and start my advocacy strategy for another class too.

The First Of September

Has been a good one with a bit of a rollercoaster; natural.

We went to Vegas....not a fan of Vegas unless I am working. I wasn't working. Since, coming back from Vegas and Belize it has really strengthen that I do not want to drink and just want to focus on my goals and have no distractions.

Speaking of distractions.... I still haven't celebrated my birthday...probably should try to put something together instead of writing on my ghosted Tumblr. I turned 30 on August 26th...I had weddings that entire week. Following week was Vegas for someone else's birthday and now I am back and still just working and trying to get a hold of my never ending to do list.

I have been getting more accomplished and my head is becoming clearer. I still have a way too much on my to do list and need to hire for Light Rae to help take off the load.

I am still learning a lot as a go but I know having help with my editing will free up 80% of my time. That is huge. I spend most of my days editing.

Getting back in the swing of things with my daughter in school is going well. We have been utilizing our time well. Ivy helps me with chores in the morning before we walk the dogs around the park, I take her to school and the race is on to get as much done before she gets home for family time.

More and more I start to feel like myself as I get more organized and try to slow down. It is really the hardest thing I have ever done with running my own business. There is no down time. I am needed all the time by everyone. Learning the balance of everything will set me free to a new level.

85: Nyboma // Doublé doublé

Doublé doublé Nyboma 1981, Maikano

One of my local record shops has a bin of African LPs labelled “Our supplier in Benin,” which is a wonderfully specific attribution. I would love to have a Man in Belize, a Backer in Brunei. (I’d even take a Woman in Longueuil.) The owner was contacted by a record store clerk who offered an interesting proposal: the Montreal shop would send along its common-as-dirt western pop records (your Eltons, your Streisands, your James Taylors), and their Beninese counterpart would send their own equivalent local basics. A win-win, especially for slavering Afro-pop simps like myself, who get trembly at the very sight of sleeves with school picture day-quality photos of people in killer leisure suits over bright solid-coloured backgrounds with a load of text in a foreign language.

Nyboma is one of the bigger soukous stars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a songwriter and tenor singer who has been performing for over half a century. Unlike a few of the African singers in my collection, he’s easy to find info on, and even a few lyrics—in fact, 1981’s “‘Doublé doublé’” is enough of a classic that there’s a video from this decade with over 6.4 million views of cats dancing to it at a wedding like it’s “The Electric Slide”:

When I reviewed an Empire Bakuba record a few months back, the group led by Nyboma’s frequent collaborator Pepe Kalle (that’s him introing the video above), I wrote a summary of the soukous genre for the unfamiliar that I’ll recycle here:

“A Congolese form, marked by giddy rhythms and sugarcane guitar improvisation, usually led by a charismatic vocalist who doubles as a hype man. With roots in American R&B and Cuban rumba, it’s a kind of pan-Black form of music—and yet, the guitar style is also faintly reminiscent of bluegrass, a genre whose Black roots are a bit further removed.”

Nyboma’s tenor is high enough it could easily be taken as a woman’s voice and he has a smoother touch in general than Kalle does—he’s not calling out dance moves or doing crowd work. He’s cut from the same angelic stuff as that super-clean soukous guitar tone, the part of “‘Doublé doublé’” that would give a no-dancing township pause despite the obviously [dogwhistle adjective] rhythms. The rumba roots show through pretty strongly in Nyboma’s music, too, which verges on calypso at times. The highlight of the LP is “Papy Sodolo,” a floating down the river sort of number with a languid guitar lead that makes me think of Les Paul wearing water wings.
