From Australian Bureau of Meteorology Seasonal Summary of Summer 2024
If anyone asks why Australians tend to live on the coast instead of the interior, the answer is pretty obvious and doesn’t require a YouTube video claiming its odd.
Also the above article discusses the raw data on exactly how hot this summer has been. Poor Western Australia was roasted, while the east coast drowned ::hugs all my fellow Aussies::
As for Adelaide, which sits in the yellow bit with the Island and gulfs to the east of the Great Australian Bight, we had a mild summer. We blew out our rain record, but honestly that was two days in December and not much else, nothing like the east and north that had the fun of at least two cyclones. Adelaide has only had a few hot days and no major heat waves (I say that as the next few days are going to be 34, 33, 36, 39, 36 and 36 celcius, so technically there is a four day heatwave in that at least, yay for autumn).
Where I live is very dry - my car is desperate for rain to get all the bird shit and outback dust off it as we haven’t really seen any for two months. But this summer it felt like one side of the country was baking and the other drowning while we sat quite lucky with mild weather in the middle ::hugs all the Aussies::
Of course, it may be Autumn and the days are getting shorter (damnit), but we will still have some summery weather, so it isn’t finished yet. Not really until the first April rains.
I am counting my blessings, though.
Nutty
I love a sunburnt country
A land of sweeping plains
Of ragged mountain ranges
Of droughts and flooding rains

Remembering Carl Weathers 1948-2024
Sad news today that actor, director and former NFL player Carl Weathers has died at 76. His most famous role was as Apollo Creed in the legendary underdog sports epic Rocky! The opponent of Rocky later became a close friend and he returned in Rocky II, Rocky III, and Rocky IV. He was such a great character! Weathers even appeared in the documentary John G. Avildsen: King of the Underdogs about the Rocky director (I included the doc in my Best Documentaries of the 2010s list).
Tumblr media
Sly Stallone and Weathers in Rocky
In the 80s he co-starred in Predator. After co-stars Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger became governors, many asked Weathers if he'd go into politics. Unfortunately it never happened, but he did appear in an SNL sketch where he did a fake election ad!
Tumblr media
Weathers and the future Governator in Predator
Other notable films he appeared in included Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 80s action movie Action Jackson ("now I'm pissed off!"), as the golf mentor to Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore, and the voice of Combat Carls in Toy Story 4 (which I included on my Best Movies of 2019 list).
Tumblr media
Weathers and Grogu on The Mandalorian
But his biggest role in recent years was a Greef Karga on the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian. Earlier this week I named it my #3 TV Show of 2023. As the ally to Din Dijarin he stole many scenes and was nominated for an Emmy for his performance. He even directed two great episodes of the show in 2020 and 2023. It also needs to be said that he directed a lot of other TV shows too!

I’m currently watching a tornado documentary and legit thought of your blog’s description as was inspired to send you some hints of what state I’m in based on some weather facts
While my state is outside of traditional Tornado Alley, a tornado struck it during the later 1900s that was so destructive that Dr Fujita himself contemplated rating it an F6
It's funny that I got this ask while sitting in the dark waiting for the power to come back on after a near miss from a high-end EF2 tornado.
But hey, I see you from Ohio. I love how Fujita considered a rating from his own scale inconceivable lol
Tumblr media
I love some weather trivia. Thanks for the ask!

Killer Geek Chapter Forty
Billy’s knife sank deep into Sidney, each thrust a promise of death. She gasped for breath, her hands scrambling to push him off, but he was relentless, pinning her beneath him. The blade moved faster, his fury echoing in each twist of the handle.
I couldn’t move. I could only watch, my heart racing, knowing there was no saving her.
And then, a loud crack of gunfire echoed through the room.
Billy’s head jerked back as the bullet struck him, a flash of disbelief in his eyes. He turned toward the source, still on top of Sidney, his face twisted in confusion, but before he could react, Gale stood, a look of determination hardening her features.
The gunshot rang out again, hitting Billy square in the chest. His body went limp, and he fell to the floor with a sickening thud, leaving Sidney’s lifeless body beneath him.
Stu stared at Gale, wide-eyed, his voice trembling. “My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me.”
And then, in one swift motion, Gale shot him too.
I stood up shakily, my legs almost giving way as I approached Billy’s body. There he was, my big brother—lying in a pool of his own blood. He had been the one to bring this all crashing down, but in that moment, I couldn’t help but feel the ache of the sibling bond. He was still my brother, even if everything else had been a lie.
Randy, who had been unconscious on the floor, stirred, groaning as he shifted and slowly propped himself up on one elbow. His voice was rough from the blood loss, but his words were clear.
“Careful. This is the part where the killer comes back.”
And just like that, Billy’s eyes flickered open. His gaze locked onto me, and in that instant, I felt the weight of everything he had done.
Before I could react, Billy lunged toward me, his hand wrapping around my neck, squeezing with all his remaining strength. I gasped for air, struggling to break free.
But then the gun went off again, the bullet piercing Billy’s skull. His grip slackened as the life drained from him, and he collapsed onto the floor, his body unmoving.
I dropped to my knees, gasping for breath, my hands trembling as I reached for my neck. Billy was finally gone.
The house was eerily silent, the chaos of the night settling into something even more terrifying—finality. My breath came in ragged gasps as I stared down at Billy’s body, his lifeless eyes still open, frozen in shock. Blood pooled beneath him, dark and thick, the metallic scent clogging my senses.
He was gone.
I wasn’t sure what I felt. Relief? Horror? Grief?
My hands shook as I reached out, hesitating before brushing my fingers against his cooling skin. He had been my brother. The person who teased me growing up, who protected me before everything turned dark. And now, he was just… gone.
Randy groaned, shifting on the floor. I turned my head, watching as he sat up, wincing.
"Jesus Christ," he muttered, pressing a hand to his side. "I feel like I got hit by a truck."
Gale was still gripping the gun, her hands shaking. She took a slow, cautious step forward, her eyes darting between Billy and Stu, as if waiting for one of them to get back up again.
"They’re dead," I whispered, my voice hoarse.
Gale didn’t lower the gun just yet.
The weight of the night settled on me. Sidney was dead. Billy was dead. Stu was dead. The house smelled like blood and sweat, the distant sound of sirens cutting through the heavy silence. Someone must have called the cops.
I felt sick.
Randy dragged himself up onto his elbows, looking around at the carnage. His eyes landed on Sidney’s body, and something inside him seemed to break.
"Shit," he whispered. "She’s really gone."
I didn’t have anything to say to that.
A lump formed in my throat as I looked at the door. Any second now, the police would come bursting in, and what the hell was I supposed to tell them? That my own brother had done this? That I had just sat here and watched him fall?
My legs felt like lead as I pushed myself up, barely staying steady.
Gale finally lowered the gun, exhaling shakily. "This is going to be the biggest story of my career," she said, though she didn’t sound excited about it. More... numb.
The sirens grew louder, flashing lights cutting through the windows.
It was over.
But somehow, it didn’t feel like it.
I felt Randy’s eyes on me, but I couldn’t look at him. Instead, I stared at Billy one last time, my stomach twisting.
And then the front door burst open, and the house was flooded with officers, their voices shouting commands, their guns raised.
Everything blurred after that.
I barely registered them shouting at me to put my hands up, barely flinched when they dragged me away from Billy’s body. The night had been an endless nightmare, and now, I was waking up to something even worse.
The aftermath.
The flashing red and blue lights bathed Stu’s house in an eerie glow as the officers swarmed in, barking orders, guns drawn. I felt rough hands grabbing me, yanking me away from Billy’s body, and I barely registered the movement. My ears were ringing, my body numb.
“Hands where we can see them!” one of them shouted.
I lifted my shaking hands, barely able to process what was happening. I wasn’t the one who had done this, but in that moment, I felt just as guilty.
Gale quickly stepped forward, hands raised. “Wait! She didn’t do anything—she’s a victim!”
The officer holding me hesitated, glancing between me and the bodies littering the floor.
“There are bodies everywhere,” another officer muttered, stepping over Stu’s lifeless form. “Jesus.”
A pair of officers bent down near Billy and Sidney, checking for pulses.
“They’re gone,” one of them confirmed.
Gone.
That word barely felt real.
A choked noise escaped from Randy, who was still on the floor, cradling his wounded shoulder. “We’re the ones who called—Billy and Stu were the killers.”
“Is anyone else alive?” an officer asked.
Randy shook his head. “Sidney… she’s—” His voice cracked, and he turned his head away, unable to finish.
I felt like I was going to be sick.
An officer radioed for paramedics, and I barely heard Gale explaining what had happened. I wasn’t listening. I couldn’t.
I was staring at Billy.
Even in death, his expression was frozen in something unreadable. There was no redemption in the end, no last-minute apology. Just the same rage, the same obsession, the same darkness that had consumed him from the start.
My brother was gone, and I didn’t know how to feel about it.
“Miss, are you hurt?” A paramedic knelt beside me, scanning me for injuries.
I shook my head automatically, but my body ached all over. My hands were covered in blood—not mine, but Billy’s, Sidney’s, Stu’s.
“We need to check you out,” the paramedic insisted.
I barely had the energy to resist.
I let them lead me out of the house, stepping over broken glass and bloodstains, past officers and flashing cameras from reporters who had already arrived on the scene.
The moment the cold night air hit me, I felt like I could finally breathe again.
But that breath was laced with grief.
It was over.
And yet, I knew nothing would ever be the same again.

"If we told you, "there's a 40% chance of rain today," do you know what that means? If not, you're not alone!!
Dr. Anne Heggli from the Desert Research Institute is tackling that very dilemma and is joining the show this week to talk about it!"

Btw they are called Shelf clouds! It's a type of arcus cloud along with the morning glories.
Not to be mistaken with wall clouds which are much shorter and connected to individual clouds (and they dont tend to have the rainfall you can see in the video and are at the end of the storm over the front).
Shelf clouds tend to span across the horizon and typically front squall lines (aka, think of several rows of thunderstorms.) It's a result of the air ahead of the front meeting with the cool air of the storm! And they come bearing heavy winds and occasionally a rain-wrapped tornado

2024 Fan Expo Boston - Day 3
This past weekend was the 2024 Fan Expo Boston convention at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston from Fri. June 14 to Sun. June 16. Here at Green’s Party, I’ve been covering the convention! Read my coverage here.
On Sunday I returned with my son. Can't think of a better way to spend part of Father's Day then geeking out with my son. Much like the prior days of the con, there were loads of cosplayers, gamers and fans out in full force.

Gunn as Kraglin in GOTG
Actor Sean Gunn might not be the household name his director brother James Gunn is, but he has stolen many scenes in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies as Kraglin. He had a booth at Fan Expo Boston and we briefly talked before he signed an autograph for my son. Very cool guy! With the GOTG movies, the soundtrack has been very important going back to the mixtape on the walkman to the Zune player in the last movie. I asked him if he had a favorite song on the soundtracks? He said "Of the three movies it's tough because there's a lot of songs that I like. But I think if I had to pick one [pauses], well I'm going to pick two. One I'm going to say 'Lake Shore Drive', the Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah song. I remember growing up it was the local song we'd hear on the radio in the Midwest, so that's really cool to have such an obscure song reach such a big audience. It's such a great lost 70s tune. But also I gotta give a shout out to "Come and Get Your Love" [by Redbone], the opening credits music to the first movie. I've heard it a kajillion times and I still love it and have never gotten sick of that song."

ASL translator, Weintraub, and Howard
One of the biggest stars at this year's Fan Expo Boston was easily Bryce Dallas Howard. She has proven to be more than just Ron Howard's daughter since her breakout role in The Village (a disappointment, but no denying her performance in it). She is a self-proclaimed sci-fi geek and it shows in her filmography with Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation, and the Jurassic World movies. I've been more of a fan of her performances in The Help, 50/50, and Rocketman more than her big event movies. But I've been particularly impressed with her directing some standout episodes of The Mandalorian! She did a conversation in the main theater moderated by Collider's Steven Weintraub. One fan asked her since she followed her father in directing Star Wars, if she might follow her uncle [Clint Howard] in directing Star Trek. She said 'I'm a Trekkie, so I would love it. I mean wasn't the last season of Picard just brilliant?! So I can only hope!" At the end, she got a little choked up as she talked about the late great Carl Weathers of The Mandalorian. She said his family is having a private memorial for him and she'd love for the audience to give him a standing ovation as she filmed it. The entire audience (myself included) got up for Mr. Weathers!
This year's Fan Expo Boston was a blast and it was especially fun to have it at Hynes Convention Center after a number of years at the Seaport.
