Killer Geek Chapter Forty-Two
Randy slid into a booth across from me, his usual animated energy practically buzzing off of him as he stirred his coffee. I wrapped my hands around my own cup, letting the warmth seep into my fingers.
“So, what’s the verdict?” Randy asked, watching me expectantly.
I took a sip, considering. “It’s good.”
“Good? Good?” He scoffed, placing a hand over his heart like I had personally insulted him. “That’s a gross understatement. That coffee is perfection, YN.”
I smirked. “It’s coffee, Randy.”
“It’s art.”
I rolled my eyes but let myself enjoy the moment. It had been so long since I felt normal—since I laughed without the weight of my past dragging me down.
Randy grinned, clearly pleased with himself. “You’re smiling. That’s progress.”
I ducked my head, suddenly feeling self-conscious. “Yeah, well, it’s easier here. Away from Woodsboro.”
His expression softened. “I get it. You needed to get out of there. People weren’t exactly… kind.”
That was an understatement.
After Billy and Stu, the media had exploded. The sister of a psychopath—the whispers, the rumors, the stares. I had been picked apart like some tragic, living ghost of a horror movie.
Some people pitied me. Others thought I had to know what Billy was planning, that I had to be involved somehow.
And then there were the sick ones. The ones who romanticized it, who came up with disgusting theories about why Billy and Stu had spared me.
I shook the thoughts away, focusing on Randy instead.
“You were the only reason I survived that town.” I said it before I could second-guess myself.
Randy’s lips parted slightly, his usual quick wit momentarily failing him.
Then, a soft smile. “I wasn’t gonna let you go through it alone.”
I reached across the table, my fingers grazing his. He immediately turned his hand over, lacing his fingers through mine.
We weren’t official. I still wasn’t sure I was ready for that. But Randy never made me feel like I had to be.
He was just there. Steady. Safe.
And for now, that was enough.
The moment was broken when Randy’s pager suddenly buzzed against the table. He sighed, pulling it out of his pocket.
“Damn, duty calls. There’s a film theory club meeting in ten, and if I don’t go, they’ll probably start debating if Psycho or Halloween had the bigger cultural impact, and I just can’t let them get it wrong.”
I smirked. “And which is it?”
He shot me an exaggeratedly offended look. “Halloween, obviously. Carpenter redefined the genre.”
“Obviously,” I echoed, grinning.
He squeezed my hand before letting go. “I’ll see you later, okay?”
I nodded, watching as he headed toward the door.
For the first time in two years, I wasn’t looking over my shoulder.
I just hoped it would last.
A Few Days Later
The whispers started the moment I stepped out of my dorm building.
I wasn’t even fully awake yet, but the murmur of voices, hushed and urgent, cut through the morning air.
"Two students were murdered at the STAB premiere last night."
"Just like Woodsboro."
A chill ran down my spine, and I pulled my jacket tighter around myself. I kept my head down and pushed forward, but the voices didn’t stop.
"You know STAB is based on the real murders, right? They even put in the part where Billy’s sister got those creepy phone calls and was chased through the woods."
"I heard she was involved. How else did she survive?"
"Maybe she knew what Billy was doing all along."
My hands curled into fists as I walked faster, trying to block them out. It didn’t matter that almost two years had passed—people still whispered, still stared, still judged. I had spent months in therapy, trying to deal with the nightmares, the trauma, the loss. And yet, I was still Billy Loomis’ sister before anything else.
The weight of their eyes was suffocating, their words pressing down on me as I weaved through the campus. But the second I spotted a cluster of news vans parked outside the main hall, my stomach turned.
Reporters.
They were everywhere, cameras flashing, microphones thrust forward as students passed by.
"Do you think the murders are connected to Woodsboro?"
"Is there another Ghostface killer?"
"Could it happen again?"
I ducked my head and slipped past them, my pulse racing. I needed to get to Randy.
By the time I reached the film theory classroom, my breathing was uneven, my hands trembling at my sides. I stopped just outside the door, trying to steady myself. Inside, the discussion was already in full swing.
"Sequels suck," Randy’s voice carried from inside. "By definition alone, they’re inferior films."
I spotted him easily, sitting near the front, arms crossed, his expression animated as he debated with Mickey.
"Oh, come on!" Mickey scoffed. "Aliens? Far superior to the original."
"Yeah, well, there are exceptions!"
"Not many."
CiCi rolled her eyes. "Name another."
"Godfather Part II?" Randy shot back.
I barely heard the next part. My breath still felt uneven, my skin crawling under unseen eyes. I stood frozen in the doorway, watching, waiting for Randy to look up and see me.
Then the conversation shifted.
"You guys hear about the murders?" someone asked. "The seniors at the STAB premiere?"
"A guy and a girl. Phil Stevens and Maureen Evans. Brutal."
"You know who I bet did it?" A smirking voice cut through the room. "That psycho Billy Loomis’ sister."
My stomach twisted.
The girl turned to Randy with a sly smile. "You’d be smart to run. My dorm is always free."
Randy tensed, his jaw tightening, but before he could respond, his eyes flickered up—finally landing on me. His expression changed instantly, concern flashing across his face as he shot up from his seat.
"Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen," he announced, brushing past the girl without a second glance. "I think I have better things to do."
He reached me in two strides, lowering his voice. "Hey," he murmured. "You okay?"
I let out a shaky breath. "Just needed to see you."
Randy gave me a soft, knowing look, then glanced back at the class. "Come on," he murmured, slipping an arm around my shoulders. "Let's get out of here."
I didn’t hesitate. I just let him lead the way.
Randy didn’t waste any time getting me back to his dorm.
The second the door shut behind us, I let out a shaky breath and sat down on his bed, running my hands over my face. My heart was still racing, my mind spinning.
"It’s happening again, Randy," I whispered.
He turned from the door, his eyes locking onto mine. "It’s not happening again," he said firmly, trying to keep his voice steady, to keep me steady.
I looked up at him, my expression sharp. "Don’t bullshit me, Randy. Two people were killed last night at the STAB premiere—a movie that is based off our fucking trauma.” My voice cracked slightly at the end, and I hated it.
He sighed and crossed the room, sitting beside me on the bed. "Hey, let's just take a breath. Relax." His hand found my cheek, gently turning my face toward him. "We don’t know anything for sure yet."
I swallowed hard, my pulse hammering in my ears. "I just—" But the words died on my tongue when his lips met mine.
Soft. Warm. Familiar.
I melted into him instantly, my fingers curling into his shirt as he deepened the kiss. It wasn’t desperate, wasn’t rushed—just grounding. A reminder that I wasn’t alone, that I was here, that he was here.
Randy slowly guided me back against the mattress, his body pressing over mine, never breaking the kiss. His hands skimmed over my sides, slow and steady, anchoring me to the moment.
And for just a little while, the fear, the whispers, the nightmare waiting outside—none of it mattered.

Thoughts on the 2024 Oscars
Just the other day I posted my Best Movies of 2023 list, so you pretty much know what I was rooting for! But here are some thoughts on tonight's awards, telecast and winners:
Best Director: Christopher Nolan - he deserved this award, but he easily should've won for Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception or Dunkirk too.
Best Actress: Emma Stone - really Academy? Lilly Gladstone should've won for Killers of the Flower Moon. That was a performance where she leaned into the silences and it was all in the eyes. While Emma Stone gave a powerhouse performance in Poor Things (an uneven movie IMHO) it was more of a showy "hey, look at me" performance. It's hard to compare both performances since they were so different but Gladstone should've won (and made history).
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr. - Congrats to the first SNL cast member (he was in the 1985-86 season) to win an Acting Oscar. So cool to see the supporting actor from Weird Science, Back to School and A Scanner Darkly win! He probably should've won for Tropic Thunder, but he is worthy of this award for this performance!
Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph - I named The Holdovers my Best Movie of 2023 so I'm thrilled they did the right thing and at least rewarded Randolph!
Best Documentary Feature Film: 20 Days in Mariupol - I named this my Best Documentary of 2023. Big Congrats to GBH, Frontline and everyone involved with this powerful doc!
Best Animated Short Film: War Is Over - In my recent guide to the Oscar Nominated Short Films I predicted this. But big congrats to co-writer / executive producer Sean Ono Lennon. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono oversaw the short animated film inspired by John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)". I met Mr. Sean Ono Lennon when he did an in-store performance at Other Music in NYC in 2010. In Feb. 2015, I named his band Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger's album Midnight Sun my #1 Album of 2014. Then both The GOASTT and their leader Sean Lennon retweeted it and thanked me! I've also gotten to cover his band The Claypool Lennon Delirium here as well.
Best Live Action Short Film: The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar - another short film I predicted would win. Wes Anderson has been nominated in a lot of other categories, but it's nice to see him finally win, even if he should've won for Bottle Rocket or Rushmore!
Very cool to see Slash doing a guitar solo during "I'm Just Ken". Yes the Barbie song lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell's "What Was I Made For" also from that film, but how cool was it to see the GNR guitarist ripping it up at the Oscars?!

What is your all time favorite "Phenomenon" inspired go-to?
What is your all time favorite "Phenomenon" inspired go-to?
With today’s Total Solar Eclipse crossing over a large section of the United States today, it has brought up a wide range of “happenings” beyond something natural. From alien invasions to the biblical rapture, our imaginations come up with all sorts of wild scenarios. I even had a little fun this morning and shot a video and posted pic out there on my socials with my Tin Foil Hat. With that…
