A Thought upon Second Viewing:

You know what I hope? That at least some of the young queers in the US who watch the Red, White, and Royal Blue movie for the deeply horny rom com are sufficiently inspired to register to vote. Regardless of what you personally feel about the realism of the romance, the part about voting mattering IS accurate. If we could mobilize the unregistered members of our own communities, it could seriously change US politics.

anyway. this is maybe my favorite thread i’ve found on twitter the past couple days about why empathy directly translates to being able to enjoy sports regardless of the outcome. we’d all be better off and less bitter if we were willing to embrace the randomness of sport (especially ice hockey) or admit that the people we’re watching are actual people, lol. thank you twitter user himbeaux_on_ice for the logic in a sea of ugliness lkjsdklfjsdkl

I started the last post with "I'm so tired" too, but it just gets more true every day.

My last post was about how my real life sucks, but man, I can't even come to the internet as an escape from the intellectual collapse of academia anymore.

I'm just trying to browse in peace without being bombarded with people virtue signalling, advocating for media to be sanitized, and arguing over whether it's morally responsible to ship a character who is a literal murderer with someone that he said something mean to once.

it's absolutely wild to me that misogynistic gay men, trans or otherwise, will complain about how gay women get all the representation in media (see: kids cartoons) and ask when they'll get to see a gay man kiss in their own favorite show. bc like. how do you fundamentally look at something like that and think "ugh i wish this was about me" instead of realizing what a gift it is for the entire community. like ppl really are out there thinking that, because gay women get shown in a specific way "more often" than men, it means they're less oppressed or some shit. like how do you lose this much of a connection to the ppl who share so many similar qualities to you? why can't you celebrate the ways that things have been going for others that share your community? a win for one of us is a win for all of us, why does it need to be an oppression competition??

i also just DO think that if you're like "oh those (lazy, vapid, brainless) people who only Consume Media" I am gonna be raising one hell of an eyebrow at you. like hey quick question where do disabled people fit into your mental model of all this. do you think it's bad if someone with a disability can only ever muster the energy to watch tv?

like disregarding all the weird viewpoint of art that goes into referring to it as Media Consumption, I just flat out do not think you're very kind to disabled people if you're getting mad about this boogeyman of someone whose only hobby is something you view as mindless. if you want people to be more active audiences of art, or if you want people to try more hobbies, that's totally fine! maybe you should post some resources to help people branch out more! but if your entire thesis is snidely saying that people who don't have hobbies you approve of aren't cool or good or whatever.... maybe you're just kind of an asshole
