Plant-based substitute for fossil fuels developed for plastic foams
An environmentally-friendly preparation of plant material from pine could serve as a substitute for petroleum-based chemicals in polyurethane foams. The innovation could lead to more environmentally friendly versions of foams used ubiquitously in products such as kitchen sponges, foam cushions, coatings, adhesives, packaging and insulation. The global market for polyurethane totaled more than $75 billion in 2022. A Washington State University-led research team used an environmentally-friendly preparation of lignin as a substitute for 20% of the fossil fuel-based chemicals in the foam. The bio-based foam was as strong and flexible as typical polyurethane foam. The researchers report on their work in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

The Boys in the Boat (2023)
A 1930s-set story centered on the University of Washington's rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
A really uplifting and feel good sports drama set in the 1930s. It is predictable but yet still very enjoyable. I really enjoyed it. This is also an excellent movie that you can watch with the whole family.
P.S. I think Callum Turner should throw in his name into the "next Bond" ring. I think he has the potential to make an excellent Bond.

Here's an article talking about the study from the tweets. One important note, a review found no scientific misconduct. Rob Wielgus did not have his credibility stripped by the scientific community. He was thrown under the bus by WSU.

January 6th - A Secret Kept
January 6th, 2024 is the 60th anniversary of our first wedding. It started as a dare. Surprise, surprise it lasted! The beginning was a bit unusual. Ken and I met in 1962 at a Junior Achievement Meeting. He went to the rival high school across town. We began dating in February 1963. It was a rocky romance at best. He proposed on our third date. My response was to laugh. Ridiculous I said. We’re…

An international team of scientists has discovered a way to store and release volatile hydrogen using lignin-based jet fuel that could open new pathways for sustainable energy production. In a new study in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Washington State University Professor Bin Yang and colleagues demonstrated that a type of lignin-based jet fuel they developed can chemically bind hydrogen in a stable liquid form. The research has many potential applications in fuels and transportation and could ultimately make it easier to harness hydrogen's potential as a high energy and zero emissions fuel source. "This new, lignin jet fuel-based technology could enable efficient, high-density hydrogen storage in an easy-to-handle sustainable aviation fuel, eliminating the need for pressurized tanks for storage and transport," Yang said.

The country of freedom and ridiculous democracy.
The moment of the violent arrest of the economics professor of Emory University Caroline Fohlinin in the state of Georgia
After these scenes, there must be a position for all universities around the world to stand with the people of Palestine in Gaza. All hypocritical authorities and rulers who support the Nazi terrorist Israelis must be confronted.

As the police escalate violence, beat and attack students and professors, and conduct mass arrests, student protesters should know their rights.
Here is the link to the National Lawyer's Guild booklet for protesters.
If you plan on going out to support the protests, please take some time to read through this and know your rights.
