POSTCARDS AS COMMUNIQUES When Indigenous history gets overlooked, ignored
[The Wasco and Wishram lived along what is now called Hood River in Oregon, and lost their territory to settlers in the 1800s. Edward S. Curtis captured an image of a Wishram girl in 1909. Photo from the Library of Congress, in the Public Domain.] A Postcard Tradition Picture postcards in the US have long presented an affordable way to share beach vacations with relatives, and offer a quick…

This is a colourization I did of a Indigenous Wishram woman in bridal clothes in 1911. The Wasco and Wishram tribes are closely related Chinook tribes that reside in modern day Oregon on the Columbia River. I got the original b+w from Wikimedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_S._Curtis_Collection_People_032.jpg This one was a bit hard to do, I had to do a lot of guessing. I don't know if I did the headdress right or not.

Wasco/Wishhram
Wasco-Wishram are two closely related Chinook Indian tribes from the Columbia River in Oregon. Today the tribes are part of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs living in the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Oregon and Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation living in the Yakama Indian Reservation in Washington.

Etymology of County Names in Oregon.
Kirsan_Raccoony
Up next: California, Ohio, Indiana, New Jersey, South Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas
Notes:
Several of the etymologies I used are contentious. A major example is Coos: The county is named for the Coos people but the actual word 'coos' is muddy. I believe the most likely one is from a southwestern Oregon Athabascan word ku·s, meaning 'bay'. The next most likely one is that its derived from a Hanis (Kusan) root gus- meaning 'south', but I don't think it can appear as a free morpheme in Hanis.
The name Oregon also has an unclear etymology. Three possibilities are listed, but there are numerous more. This article is a good summary of the debate, although it is a debate that will likely never be truly answered.
Kiksht origin names are from several different Upper Chinookan dialects of the Kiksht or Upper Chinook language (Wasco-Wishram, Multnomah, and Clackamas), but they are very closely related.

blue-lights-at-night replied to your video “WARNING FOR FLASHING LIGHTS this is a couple days late but it’s still...”
Why is Wendy’s hair black? Genuinely curious, sorry if this sounds rude I’m really not meaning to be!!! I love your dipper btw
no prob! i have a headcanon that the corduroy family is native american/first nations (i’ve heard that term is specifically for canadians though so i’m not sure if it’s applicable in this case). i forget where i initially got the idea from, but i know that wendy’s original design having black hair played a part in it. look at her. i love
...this actually turned into me going off about native americans in gravity falls.
so i don’t have a definitive headcanon for specifically which tribe they would belong to, mostly because of confusion on the location of gravity falls. you see, the town of gravity falls moves all over the state of oregon in the series, which makes it difficult historically to find out which tribes would have been in that general area. (the area generally shifts between central and eastern oregon.) @dandleweed brought to my attention a while ago that the general consensus was that the wasco/wishram people did the cave paintings, since they were known for cave artwork, but that just brings even more confusion into where the hell this town is, because they were tribes of the columbia river, and gravity falls isn’t really on the river.
(this is all very general i made this in gimp at 2 am) i highlighted the part where it says “indian reservation” in the bottom right. this is because i’ve looked around on multiple maps and i can find no record of a reservation in southeastern oregon (i also put in the largest reservation in oregon, warm springs). there’s a chance that the team decided to make up a reservation, but considering that it’s never brought up again, it seems unlikely. it’s just a weird, out-of-place thing, and i feel like it represents native americans’ roles in gravity falls: contrived.
in the few times they’re brought up in gravity falls, native americans are almost exclusively used for magical backstory stuff where their entire existence is tied to setting up bill’s history. the only exception i can think of is a brief glimpse of a painting we get in northwest mansion mystery of a northwest cheating a native american (also we don’t even know if this takes place in oregon):
otherwise, every other mention is related to how bill has been around for ages/his previous attempts at world domination. the natives have all run away from gravity falls so they’re conveniently nowhere to be found in the present day. what’s that? you wanted a collage of literally every other time native americans are somewhat depicted? sure! there’s literally four of them.
notice how bill is always the focus. also you know i’m desperate when i bring in journal 3. i’ve also made a pastebin of all the dialogue/exposition referencing concerning them. the point is there’s not a lot to go off of and what little there is has little care given to historical context or continuity (though, as is the case with Gravity Falls, when you start to look at the details the continuity falls apart). it frames native americans as people who existed a long time ago and don’t anymore. everything about them relates to mystic mumbo jumbo.
so my basic thinking is, what if it were different? what if the show had good representation of native americans? in general gravity falls was pretty lacking in racial/ethnic diversity (with the possible exclusion of soos; i dont know how people view him in terms of positive representation). i think it’d be cool if gravity falls was on the river (would make sense considering. yknow. it’s a waterfall. they need water. like from a river) and if some of the people in the town were wasco/wishram, like wendy and her family. i don’t have the insight to make a really delicate and well-handled way of tying it all together so for now i’m just drawing wendy with black hair. also using this as a plug for my good friend @ursawood for doing the lineart in that piece he is God Tier
(and black dipper and mabel are always.............epic wins)

Wishram women wearing bridal garb at a wedding in 1910. The Wishram and Wasco are Plateau tribes that are closely related and share many cultural aspects with the Northwest Coast tribes. They lived along the banks of the Columbia River, near The Dalles. The Dalles were a prime trading location, and the tribes benefited from a vast trade network. Invasion in the 1800s brought European diseases which took a great toll on the Wasco and Wishram populations. in 1855, both tribes were forced by the United States to sign treaties ceding the majority of their lands. These treaties established the Warm Springs Reservation. In the 1700s, the estimated Wishram population was 1,500. In 1962 only 10 Wishram peoples were counted on the Washington census.

The Full Strawberry Moon happens on June 27th in the US and June 28th in Europe. The colorful name is closely linked with the spread of warmer weather across the Northern Hemisphere and many Native American and First Nations peoples have special names for this full moon. The Algonquin tribes of what is now New England coined the nickname Full Strawberry Moon because the phase marked the best time of year to harvest the wild fruit. Similarly, the Cherokee of the southeastern woodlands knew the moon as the Green Corn Moon, the time of year when fresh corn ears grow best. The Tewa Pueblo of the desert southwest looked forward to the June rains and bestowed the title of “Moon when the leaves are dark green.” Across the Atlantic, the ancient Celts even jumped on the botanic theme. They called the June moon, the Oak Moon (all their Full Moons were named after trees). Of course, not everyone was thrilled for the warmer weather. The Wasco-Wishram tribe of Oregon were less enthusiastic in welcoming the June moon. They knew it as, “the-moon-when-fish-spoils-quickly-moon.” 📸 : Old Farmers Almanac 🗞️ : Moon Giant

*a cassette recorder turns on* I've stopped at a museum to catch my breath. I'm still rattled from almost crashing. I need a break and it's still really hot in here. The Wasco county museum huh? Probably has air conditioning, i’ll take a look around there. *the recorder turns off* *the recorder turns on, although some how the recording seems to be from a different part of the trip* Ya know, I don’t think this is working. This whole recording my life-audio diary thing. I know that Dr. Bzent said that this’ll be good therapy or whatever but i’m starting to doubt it. *a long silence* Might as well turn this stupid thing off. *the recorder turns off* *the recorder turns on* Well the museum was fun. I liked the exhibit with all the pelts that you lifted up and they had the 1800s exchange rate for. The beaver was super thick and soft. I looked around the gift store to. Found something called a “hairstick”. The clerk was really nice and showed me how to use it. I got a few to give as gifts. Sarah will like them. Not so sure about my nieces though… *His voice drops to a bare whisper* There's someone sitting in the passenger seat. She’s wearing clothes that look like they came off one of the Wasco-Wishram exhibits, and her hair is covering her face. I...I think she wants something. Some sort of toll. I don’t have anything I can-the hairsticks! I’ll give her the 2 pronged one with the Sunstone beads. It's the nicest one i have so it’d better work. *his voice returns to normal* She's gone. I looked away for a second and she disappeared. I’m going to leave. *the car engine stars as the recording ends*

Xast Sqit Farm Land Acknowledgement
Xast Sqit (Good Rain) Farm is an organization led by and in service of Native people. The Farm is located in the Northern Willamette Valley, near the so-called Portland Metro. We acknowledge that we’ll always occupy land that holds the history of settler-colonialism trauma including but not limited to genocide, poverty, oppression, forced removal (Indian Relocation Act of 1952), and land theft (Dawes Act).
We acknowledge this land was first cared for by the Chinook, Clackamas, Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kalapuya, Atfalati, Wishram and so many more honorable peoples. Today we recognize and defer to the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Siletz Indians, Warm Springs, and to the Tribes of the Yakama, Chinook and Cowlitz peoples.
We cannot farm without Land access. We support and demand #LandBack for all Indigenous peoples. We must work towards returning land, housing and access to cultural natural resources to Native peoples regardless where they currently reside.
Please take a moment to reflect on whose land you are on, and take action to be a better guest. Explore the original stewards of Turtle Island, please take a moment now to visit @nativelandnet to learn more. By advancing strategies such as cultural easements, voluntary taxation, mutual aid and other tools for acknowledging, as well as repairing the complex history of colonization, Good Rain Farm builds on our goals of Food Sovereignty.
Additional Readings and Learnings:
Found on the website under the 'About' tab.

[TASK 055: THE NAVAJO]
Shout out to @olivaraofrph for inspiring and helping compile this task! There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 220+ Navajo faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. With 300,460 enrolled members as of 2015, the Navajo is disputed with the Cherokee to either be the largest or second largest federally recognized tribe in the United States. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite Navajo faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by a Navajo artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on Navajo culture and customs.
Screencaps
RP icons [of all sizes]
Gif Pack [maybe gif icons if you wish]
PNG packs
