Near Celio Park, Oregon An eastbound train is seen from the north side of the Columbia River. The train is on the OR&N/Union Pacific line in Oregon. The other rail line visible here is the SP&S line that crossed over from Wishram and will head down the valley visible in the middle of the image: this was called the Oregon Trunk Railway, and runs along the Deschutes River down to Bend. The major highway one sees in the foreground is I-84. One image by Richard Koenig; taken March 19th 2023.

“Overlooking Wishram, Washington, December 2023.”
©2023 Gary L. Quay
It was an interesting day for clouds. To the west was an "atmospheric river". To the east was sunbreaks flashing across the sky, sometimes illuminating the landscape on full or partial light. It was a good display of the rain shadow effect caused by the Cascade Mountains. It was a much better day to be in the semi arid east side of Oregon and Washington than in the drenched west.
This is a panorama made of two images. The 100mm Zeiss is perfect for this because it has no distortion.
Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: 100mm Zeiss Makro-Planar ZF2

why is finding information online so hard. that photo of that woman is not nez perce she is tlakuit/wishxam, which is what the caption of the original photo you must have got it from said.
#this website was like “the nez perce also wore septums、and were called nez perce by the french because of their peirced noses”#and then showed a picture of an indigenous woman with a septum piercing#but if you take the photo and put it in an image search to find the original、every site it's listed on the name is “wishham girl”#and if you search up nez perce (nimíipuu) none of them have septum piercings.#and an article even said “we dunno why the french named them that bc they didn't do that but the name stuck so”#unityrain.txt#trying to research traditional septum piercings is hard bc all the things that come up are the “about” pages of piercing shop websites#who do less than the bare minimum of research T^T#indigenous#indigenous american#wishham#wishram#wishxam#tlakuit#septum#piercing

Video
Warbonnet in the Gorge por James Belmont Por Flickr: We were pleasantly surprised to catch a member of Santa Fe's "Super Fleet" leading a unit grain train on the Burlington Northern the evening of July 3, 1995. GE B40-8W No. 566 leads a trio of Cascade Green SD40-2s, slowing for a crew change at Wishram, Washington along the mighty Columbia River. Union Pacific's Portland Sub is on the opposite side of the river in Oregon. Merger negotiations between the two Class 1 carriers was still 12 weeks out, and the formal BNSF merger happened on Dec. 31, 1996.

this work was inspired by the image of an indigenous woman i found on pinterest. in doing a reverse google image search, i was unable to find any information about her, even going back to the colonizer who took the photo in 1910. he titled this picture “Wishram Bride” after the tribe she is from. not even a name. Just another example of white men erasing indigenous identity.
During the 1900’s, shells were used as currency. Often the wealthiest would wear shells on their bodies. it’s obvious to me this woman is someone who had a lot of power and a lot of wealth (and i’m not just talking about physical wealth). I think she deserves to be on the $100 bill more than Franklin.

As February unfolds, stargazers are in for an astronomical treat with the arrival of the full snow moon, an event steeped in cultural significance. The snow moon, reaching its peak on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 8:53 a.m. ET, will be visible in all its glory through Thursday evening. Named after the heavy snowfall typical of February, this full moon has a deep historical connection with various Indigenous tribes. For example, the Comanche people call it the “sleet moon,” while the Lakota tribe refers to it as the “when trees crack because of cold” moon. The Wishram people, on the other hand, call it the “shoulder to shoulder around the fire moon,” evoking warmth and community in the midst of winter’s chill.

Her Winter House Full Moon
It is day 350 of 2024. We are almost exactly halfway through the month and at 4:02 a.m. ET, the Moon was full. This year I'm using the name from the Wishram Indians of the Columbia River area of Washington and Oregon - Her Winter Houses Moon.
It is day 350 of 2024. We are almost exactly halfway through the month and at 4:02 a.m. ET, the Moon was full. Tonight in Paradelle, it will be a Cold Moon. That is a common name for the December Full Moon reflecting the winter season and colder temperatures typical of this time in the Northern Hemisphere. December marks the official start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere when the winter…

POSTCARDS AS COMMUNIQUES When Indigenous history gets overlooked, ignored
[The Wasco and Wishram lived along what is now called Hood River in Oregon, and lost their territory to settlers in the 1800s. Edward S. Curtis captured an image of a Wishram girl in 1909. Photo from the Library of Congress, in the Public Domain.] A Postcard Tradition Picture postcards in the US have long presented an affordable way to share beach vacations with relatives, and offer a quick…

Windmill, Wishram, Washington, 2016.
“I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. They’re noisy. They kill the birds. You want to see a bird graveyard? Go under a windmill someday. You’ll see more birds than you’ve ever seen in your life.”
“But they’re manufactured tremendous if you’re into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything."
Words from the soon to be convicted felon, Donald Trump. Apparently this is but a small sample of his rants about wind power.
