Ooof...a decade on this site eh?
Oh no, story time incoming!
10 years and yeah, so much has happened already. Originally, I made this blog back when I was in high school as a place to post my drawings; back then, it was all just pencil drawings on paper. Looking at them now...well it was obvious I still had a long way ahead of me LOL. And to think some people assume that everyone skilled enough in art must have had some innate talent for it. CLEARLY, they don't know what they're talking about because I was terrible at it early on!
But I mean, I didn't really think that of my art, did I?
No. In fact, I'm pretty sure that kid me was very much impressed with his own works. See, that child had a very bloated ego and a high opinion of himself. You should ask his poor friends; I'm sure they'd agree that the bugger could take a few lessons on humility with how he'd be sharing all of his silly sketches to them and pontificating on and on about how nice he thinks they are. Yeah, I was an insufferable kid.
But I do think that overinflated ego of mine turned out beneficial for my growth as an artist because without it—without my love for my own art—I wouldn't have stuck to it.
And stuck to it I did.
Went to college soon after that and took a program majoring in biology. Not much of a surprising choice since I've always liked the sciences and figured it would later on give way to a stable career; funnily enough, while I was very passionate about making art, I never thought it would be a profitable source of income. But that didn't mean I'd stop doing it on my free time though! Actually, this was when I got myself my first tablet! And what better way to start my digital drawing experience than to buy a FUCKING EXPENSIVE cintiq!!! With the extra motivation coming from the monetary pressure of such a purchase, you bet your ass I used the hell out of that thing. I was so intent on making use of it that—would you look at that—I still use it to this day! (Wow, they really made those old wacom tablets to last, didn't they?)
Obviously, college work ended up taking a lot of my time so I couldn't really draw as much as I did a few years ago. There were even times when I could only make one painting throughout a whole month; a far cry to my previous output. But even so, I never wavered in thinking that making art—being an artist—was something that was part of my identity; it was something that I always will come back to, no matter how much busy I got contending with course work.
And speaking of which, fuck that! Got my first honest-to-goodness mental breakdown because of all the studying I was doing at one point. See, I'm the type of student that likes getting good grades because BIG NUMBERS so I made it a point to be studious. To the point of insanity, apparently.
Anyway, I got better eventually and it all turned out nice. Even snagged all the awards I could've gotten for my thesis by the end of it! Yes, I am bragging. I deserve it, thank you very much! (For anyone curious, it was a study about plant pigments and using them in solar cells).
After that debacle, I found myself whisked into Adulthood which meant I finally had to find a job. Guess I was lucky since I didn't really have much of a hard experience searching for one. Got accepted into a cosmetics company for a lab position. Hmm, in hindsight, I think they just wanted a fresh graduate who wouldn't demand a high salary and that was me so I got in pretty easily. And honestly, the work was AWESOME. My job ended up with me coming up with formulas for new products. I got to make lotions, shampoos, soaps (ugh, I hated that one), perfumes, toners, balms, scented candles, and—oddly enough that one time—glue! It was a wonderful experience for me since it blended my interest in science and art with how it required me to think of creative ways of applying technical solutions in order to make products that needed to look, feel, smell, and perform a certain way.
As a bonus, I even got to make stuff for myself! I was particularly fond of making creams with menthol. The soothing chill on the skin is just so nice!
It wasn't all good though. I mean the menthol was fine and dandy, I assure you, but even if I was enjoying myself with the work, it just so happens that it just wasn't giving me enough money to provide for the family. Also, there was that one time I splashed chili oil on my eye. A very eye-opening and spicy turn of events to be sure.
With the bills stressing the hell out of me, I then thought to myself: if only I had a marketable skill that I could use in my off time as a way of engaging with a hobby whilst earning money.
Yup, I started my singing career!
LOL no. I opened art commissions for the first time!
It was a very scary experience, mind you. I don't consider myself a social butterfly and the prospect of talking with other people in a transactional context was a big reason why I haven't even considered doing it all this time. Turns out being poor and running out of money outweighed such concerns. Also, my keeping up with art and posting them online all these years seemed to have payed off well; my twitter having then recently crossed over a thousand followers which meant I had a decent pool of potential clients!
And so I bumbled through my first few commissions trying to appear professional and all put together in front of my clients while consistently shitting myself on the inside. Just like all well-functioning adults!
It was October last year when I started. I figured that I wouldn't have much in way of commissioners—what with being new to the business—and that was fine since I didn't have much time to put on them anyways since I did still had to go to work on my day job. What mattered was that it gave me enough of a financial buffer so that I didn't have to worry too much about going under.
This continued to the turn of the year where I was able to juggle both my job and doing commission without much of a hassle. In fact, I noticed that people were actually really interested in getting commissions from me. So much that at one point...I actually made more money in a month than what I would've with my monthly salary! At that point, it was so over! Like, I originally was planning to at least observe how things went within this year and then decide after if I would just keep it as a side gig or go full-time with art. Turns out I was much more impulsive than I expected.
It was on a bright sunny February morning (no cinematic storm clouds in sight, unfortunately) that I decided on a lark to approach my boss at work and tell them that yup, no joke, I was gonna be leaving. I handed my resignation letter a few days later.
I would've liked to say that it was a tearful goodbye with my cherished co-workers whom I've spent the last five years of my life with but...COME ON, I barely talked with those people! Instead, it was a lukewarm farewell between people who just happened to work in proximity to each other. Eh, like I said, I wasn't much of a social butterfly and no one really made an effort to get to know me so oh well. MOVING ON!
Actually, I couldn't just up and leave because there are laws around these kinds of things so I worked there for another month but all that was a blur. Soon enough, I was officially unemployed!
So like I mentioned earlier, I full on did not expect doing art as something that would bring in much in way of income. My parents too thought the same. They said that yeah, art was a good hobby but as job? Let's be serious here! Well, turns out we were wrong all this time. With me fully dedicated to commission work, I was able to take on a larger volume of clients. Not as many as some of you go for (I'm looking at you, people who take ten or more commissions per batch, you monsters!) but enough that I was actually making a stable living! And yeah, WAY more than my now previous job. What an absolute shock to everyone involved; me most of all.
Now it's almost the end of the year, my plans having all but shattered into tiny pieces. Tiny pieces that scatter with the wind as I look back on the past ten years that has led me to where I am today. A lot of time has passed. I graduated high school, college, then got a job. Then graduated from that too. Certain people have come and gone. Some more permanent than others. I've lost friends and made new ones. Tumblr got fucked. Twitter got fucked. The world stopped for two years. For some, it's still stuck in those two years. I made glue in a lab. Almost lost an eye in a lab. I bought chips with my very own money for the first time. I loved people. Hated them too. Things have happened. Things have changed.
I certainly am very different from that kid who was having troubles fitting in with others from his class, what with being bullied and suffering through a particularly angsty teenage (oh my god I was CRINGE). A kid who often sought drawing as an escape to all of those terrible things out of his control.
I guess I'm happy I can still relate to that kid.

Hi! Your art is so pretty! I noticed you use medibang paint, how is it? Where are you using it on? I ask because been looking at tablets and not sure which to buy. I used to use procreate years ago but my ipad just stopped working all of a sudden (without me dropping it or anything. It was an older model though)
Hey! 👋 thanks 😊 I’ve been using medibang for a few years now after graduating college and losing access to my expensive programs lol. I started using it on an old iPad (though I find that it can be a little laggy on mobil)
My first tablet was a Wacom bamboo fun and I LOVED that tablet! It took time getting used to looking at my screen and not looking at my hand while drawing but that tabet was really responsive and sturdy. For people not wanting to shell out an arm and a leg these kind of tablets are great!
Currently I’m using a 21 inch cintiq, I’ve had it for 2 years now and I honestly don’t think I could go back. The college I went to had a lab of these so I got to use them on a regular basis for 2 years before deciding I wanted one. Drawing on your screen is a lot easier in my opinion. Going from drawing on an iPad to this would probably be a easier transition. They are REALLY expensive though 🙄 it was hard convincing myself to buy it lol. I’m in love with this cintiq ❤️ it’s super responsive and the pen feels sooooo nice in my hand and on the screen 😫
I hope this was at all helpful (I’ve only used Wacom tablets so that’s all I can really talk about), feel free to hit me up if you have anymore questions 😊

Device History
This is a list of devices I've had over the years. It's here for reference. There isn't much here that I haven't talked about before. I will reference this list in other articles, and I will keep it updated.
Desktop Computers
Apple II
Apple IIC
Apple IIGS - This is the apex of the Apple II series. It could have been much better if Apple would have allowed the microprocessor to work at it's base clock. It was a great system that was upgradeable. Our IIGS had an 80 Megabyte hard drive, 4 Megabytes of RAM, a graphics card upgrade, a 3.5 diskette, and 5.25 floppy disk drive.
Macintosh SE30
Performa 410 - The Family's Mac.
Macintosh Quadra 605 - My private machine.
PowerMac 8500 A/V This is the computer that hurdled me into media and graphics production.
PowerComputing PowerTower Pro 180 - The family PowerMac. While the PowerMac 8500 A/V was my private system, the  PowerTower Pro  was the family machine. It died a gruesome death when my sister's fiance decided to clean the carpets, and didn't put the tower up on the desk.
Dell Optiplex Pentium II - The family computer given to us by my uncle.
PowerMac G3 Desktop - Replaced my PowerMac 8500, and got the A/V card from my 8500 as well.
iMac (2nd Gen) - The family's Mac.
Dell Optiplex Pentium 4 - My private PC.
PowerMac G4 - Replaced the PowerMac G3 Desktop.
2006 MacPro (First Gen) 2.66 4-core - This was the Mac I used through my Masters Degree.
2009 21.5" iMac - Replaced my 2006 Mac Pro. Got dropped by a technician during repair.
2011 21.5" iMac - Replaced the 2009 iMac. I passed that along to a friend when I was finished with it.
PowerMac G5 - Given to me by a friend. Still in use for projects that need a legacy Mac system that can run Mac OS 9.
2011 27" iMac - My second design system. I sold it around the same time I passed the 21.5" iMac to a friend. I used the money to build my PC computer.
Custom Built Intel Xeon Workstation I did a ton of articles about this build on this BLOG. I am not going to reference them though.
Custom Built AMD Ryzen 9 3900X workstation - My current workstation.
Laptops
Toshiba Satellite Pro - The first laptop I used during my college career.
PowerBook 3400 / G3 Kanga - It started out as a PowerMac 3400, and I used it for a couple of years. I then paid $800 to upgrade it to a PowerBook G3 Kanga. I passed this computer on to my sister when she started college.
PowerBook G3 (Lombard) - Replaced the PowerBook G3 Kanga. It got passed on to a friend.
iBook G3 (Ice White) - This was the iBook G3 with technical issues which caused the GPU to become un-soldered. It was replaced by Apple with an iBook G4.
iBook G4 - This was a great laptop ... It was stolen from the computer lab I worked in.\
17" MacBook Pro (1st Gen) - Replaced my iBook G4.
2009 MacBook Pro
2012 MacBook Pro - This laptop is still in use for Mac only projects.
Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 - Recently retired. The pen digitizer became too glitch-y.
2017 HP Spectre X360 - My current laptop.
Game Consoles
Atari 2600 - Is there an American family from the 80's that didn't have one of these.
Nintendo Entertainment System - We purchased this and a box of games from a yard sale ... It was supposed to be broken, but the seller told me she thought it needed a new RF adapter. We already had a couple from the Atari 2600.
Nintendo GameBoy / Pocket / Micro / Color - My favorite handheld game console to this day. I had several devices and over 100 games. My favorite GameBoy in particular is the original GameBoy DMG.
Sega Genesis / Sega CD / Sega 32X - My favorite game console, excluding the 32X. I only have about two dozen games. That was because our Video rental store specialized in Sega Rentals. Well at least until the Sony PlayStation was released.
Sega GameGear - It was a good game system with a decent library. It had several problems though. Poor battery life, expensive peripherals, and many of the games were overpriced.
Panasonic 3DO - A very short-lived game system. I only had 10 games. My favorite 3DO game was SNKs Samurai Shodown. It was way overpriced.
Sony PlayStation - It made sense since the local video rental place had a ton of games to rent.
Sega Dreamcast - By this time our video rental place stopped renting games for newer systems. The DreamCast was an awesome gaming system. I purchased mine from a used electronics store.
GameBoy Advance - Everything I loved about the GameBoy only with better graphics.
Nintendo GameCube - This one is simple. Metroid Prime (GameCube) + Metroid Fusion (GameBoy Advance). Other than the Metroid Prime Series I had about a dozen other games.
PlayStation 3 - Got it and a bag of games from a friend.
XBOX One S - I only have a few games for this system. I really purchased this as a replacement for an Apple TV.
SmartPhones
Nokia N80 ie - My favorite Symbian phone.
Apple iPhone
Apple iPhone 3GS - One of my favorite iPhones.
Nokia 700
Samsung Galaxy Nexus - My first Android phone.
Samsung Focus - The phone that made me hate Samsung.
Apple iPhone 5C - The phone that changed my mind about the Apple ecosystem.
Sony Xperia 5C - My favorite Android phone so far.
Sony Xperia  XZ1
OnePlus 7T - My current phone.
Tablets / PDA
Oregon Scientific AM888FL organizer
Cybiko - All of the kids in the house had one. Too bad it was obsolete before my parents purchased them at Big Lots.
Apple iPad
Apple iPad 2
Apple iPad Mini Retina - My favorite Apple iPad of all time.
Apple iPad Air 2
Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 - Recently retired. The pen digitizer became too glitch-y. Yes, this was also in the laptop list.
Asus MemoPad 7CX -  My first Android tablet, and an excellent tablet as well.
Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 - Highly regarded as one of the best Android Gaming tablets of it's time
Apple iPad (8th Generation) - the 128 GB model. You can read the review my review here.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 - My current favorite tablet of all time.
Maker Boards
Raspberry Pi 2B
Raspberry Pi 3B - Used for several learning projects. I also used it as a test board for kiosks I was designing for companies
Asus Tinkerboard (first gen) I used this for my PiHole ad blocker. It has a gigabit ethernet port where the Raspberry Pi 3B had megabit ethernet. I passed it on to a friend when the 4th gen Raspberry Pi released.
Raspberry Pi Zero W - This will be at the heart of my RetroFlag GPi case.
Raspberry Pi 4B - I have a few of these. One is a testing board for Internet projects. One is running a PiHole, and one is currently the mainboard of a retro gaming machine.
Raspberry Pi CM4 - The upgrade for my RetroFlag GPi case.

Wow! Thank you for the insight! The revision part is interesting, and I will keep that in mind! Another question I forgot to ask: How important is the Macbook Pro? I am dreading that I will have to spend up to $4000 on a laptop I may or may not use. Is it used A LOT? Could I get away with buying used or should it really be shiny and new to meet all the requirements? I am pretty much starting to save up for it now...
No problem!
I would highly recommend getting the MacBook Pro. I was hesitant as well, since I had a decent Toshiba PC, but I don’t think it would have been able to handle the programs that we use for the assignments - mainly Toonboom Harmony and Maya. All the required software are installed on the computers in the Wacom Cintiq lab (J305), but I don’t think they are anywhere else, as the program is very much a “BYOD” one. So you’ll especially need a good laptop in Second year, when you get into digital stuff more (I think you do one or two assignments with Harmony in first year). MacBook Pro is recommended because of its graphics card I think - it has a really good one. The one I have has 16G of ram, which is necessary to run all the software we use etc.
I paid about $2400 for mine, so I’m not sure where the $4000 is coming from! I would recommend asking parents to help out, if they can! Mine helped out (it was a combined Christmas & Birthday present lol).
I hope that helped!

Take a tour of BGSU's Digital Arts computer labs and learn about our program. Transcript: The Digital Arts computer labs can be found in the Wolfe Center for the Arts which is conveniently located next door to the Fine Arts Center. This is great because Digital Arts students frequent the Fine Arts Center for Studio and Art History classes, instructor’s office hours, or if they need to take care of something in the School of Art’s main office. The Arts Village learning community is also in nearby Kriescher. The Wolfe Center is a beautifully modern building. It was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm, Snøhetta, which likes to incorporate elements of the local environment. The Wolfe Center was designed to look like one of the glaciers that moved across Northwest Ohio long ago. Snøhetta also designed both the reconstruction of Times Square and the 9/11 Memorial Pavilion in New York City. At the top of the stairs you’ll find Lab 246. This lab was recently updated with state of the art PCs. Besides having amazing 49” curved screens, these computers are work horses and can handle normally cumbersome animation software with ease thanks to their 32 GB of RAM and 20core Xeon Processors. They are also equipped with 16 GB video cards and 1TB class 50 solid state drives. Each station has an Intuos tablet and there is screen sharing hardware and projection from any station so that instructors can share student work with the class. Because Digital Arts is such a broad field, we’ve set it up as kind of a build-your-own major in that you can choose the courses for the specialization you want. You start with our Digital Imaging course. From there you might take Art and Code, Story and Concept Development, Creative Character Design, or Art in Digital Environments. No matter which courses you take, they will be taught by competent and compassionate faculty who are excited to help you reach your full potential. Don’t worry if you don’t have a lot of experience in the industry software. In your classes you’ll learn to use Autodesk Maya, GenArts Sapphire, Painter, Processing, Unity, zBrush and Adobe Creative Cloud (which includes Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Flash, Illustrator, and InDesign). These programs allow our students to create sophisticated works like this one: *ambient sounds including wind rustling, crickets chirping, insects buzzing, and waves lapping* Let’s take a look at Lab 244 also known as the Mac Lab. Each workstation has a dual monitor set up and a [Wacom] Bamboo tablet. But I’d really like to call your attention to our two 27” [Wacom] Cintiq tablets. These are great for detail imaging work like what you’ll see in this student piece: *digital sounds and indistinguishable whispers each time either campsite glows red* Lab 202 is the video editing lab and it is shared with the Film department. This lab features: 21 Macs Including the teachers station. Each one equipped with: • 12-Core CPUs • 32GB RAM • 1TB Drive • Dual AMD FirePro Video Card • Two 27" Apple Thunderbolt Displays • Each station also has an Intous tablet BGSU’s Digital Arts program is well known for animation, but it also encompasses digital video art, visual effects, virtual reality, video game development, digital imaging, digital painting, and so much more. With qualified faculty and stand out courses, BGSU can help you realize your dream of working in this ever-expanding field.

ax was super fun today holy shit..... first off i went to the lab zero/indivisible panel and it was great! the staff were really funny but you could tell they were super passionate about their work which made me remember why i wanted to go into game dev/art in the first place? later on i stopped by the wacom panel and tried out a cintiq.... i drew a little thing in the allotted 20 minutes and got to talk w the volunteer there too, and he said he was pretty impressed w what i could do in 20 minutes, which was really nice! also some person was taking pics or filming me while drawing and i didnt know if shouldve been flattered or creeped out but yeah overall it was fun and i learned a lot

whenever anyone talks about wacom tablets i feel like someone inevitably joins the conversation and pitches monoprice/huion/etc equivalents as a cheaper and identical alternative... so heres my thoughts on those from using those kinds of tablets a couple years back (maybe they've changed since then, who knows) -driver software is extremely finicky and sometimes outright frustrating to set up, let alone get pen pressure working in all programs. sometimes a random driver from a website for a tablet that isn't even the same brand as yours works better than the included driver (this also made working in the computer labs at my school impossible because they blocked software installations and only pre-installed wacom drivers) -the pens use a battery (or mine did) so the pen is bigger and heavier than you might be used to. this is probably something a lot of people are able to get used to though, and the battery does last a long time -had to disable shortcut buttons immediately because they placed a "Close Window" button right in the path between the drawing area and my keyboard that functions as an alt-f4 and instantly closes any window without saving -i don't remember ever having to replace the nib so i guess that's a plus. unless they changed that because my old wacom graphire2 and graphire4 also had permanent nibs and then wacom just.... *clenches fist* -when you actually get the driver to work, and pen pressure is somehow also working, and you also disabled the shortcuts so you aren't accidentally closing the window and owning yourself anymore, it works fine? You can draw stuff it's not for everyone, but it might be sufficient depending on what your situation is. also i am not talking about the "cintiq alternatives" at all i have given up on that dream and will never in my life own a fancy good tablet with a screen. anyway i guess i made this post because i was a little annoyed that people kept saying stuff like "omg get this tablet its cheaper and the EXACT SAME" like, it works, but they are Very Different.

Finished the rough on this one. Can't wait to take this one to final, I had fun with the little window scenes in the back. The one is feudal Japan and the other is a lab blood stained wall #wip #wacom #cintiq #onebluebird #onebluebirdart #alphonsemucha #artnouveau #logan #wolverine #comic #weaponx #x23 #illustration #photoshop #comicbooks
