My Accepted Algonquin Animation Portfolio 2024
Hey everyone! My Algonquin portfolio was accepted a few weeks ago and I am so excited to finally get to go to school for animation! I found seeing other people's accepted portfolios extremely helpful when working on mine, so I thought I would post mine to help out anyone applying in the future.
So, before we get started, I want to share a little bit of background information for some context. After graduating high school, got into Sheridan College's Art Fundamentals program, dedicated to spend my time building my portfolio for their Illustration and Animation programs. I overall did not have a good experience at Sheridan, for many reasons I prefer not to go into, and my portfolio for Illustration was rejected. But the whole thing wasn't a total loss, the program definitely helped build my skills. This year I decided to take a gap year to focus even more on my portfolio, unfortunately due to health issues I was only able to complete one, and I choose that one to be the Algonquin Animation portfolio. I hope you enjoy seeing what I have created in the past couple of months, and if it helps you out in any way, that would be even better!
(Also sorry some of the photos/scans aren't the best quality, I didn’t have a lot to work with!)

Let's post some animation work, shall we? These are all from first semester, in chronological order! Sadly I had to SUPER smoosh down the bowling ball gif to be small enough to post. The feather is... a cyan blue, normally. I had a lot of fun getting back into animating with these!!
Credits in order: 2. Background provided by Algonquin College 3. Grass blade rig provided by Algonquin College 4. Background and rigs provided by Algonquin College

BRB, printing out a modified version of this to post on the fourth floor of the Algonquin College B building.
(It has several stairwells, but, if I recall correctly, only one of them goes to the fifth floor.
I once had an 8 AM exam there; and I knew where the B building was, but I’d never been to the fifth floor.
So at 7:50am, I disembarked the elevator on the fourth floor [as high as it went, iirc] and just found a pack of my classmates roaming around trying to figure out how to get to the exam room.
There was a rumour that the building had been designed by Algonquin College architecture students, and I fully believed that for many years, until I realized that non-prestigious Canadian community colleges do not generally have an architecture program.
But it was an Algonquin College student level of achievement in architecture.)

Why hello traveller! Welcome to my portfolio for Algonquin College's Animation program! I have been accepted after my 2nd attempt, and so now I upload my portfolio for future applicants to have a good reference for what the college accepts! Unfortunately when I was applying, I could only find a handful of examples for this program, so now I will add myself to that collection.
Here is a link to the portfolio requirements:
Now we begin!
First up are gesture drawings! Warning for drawings of nude people, although there's nothing explicit.
2 minute
5 minute
Various times
Next are the long figure drawings!
The past 3 were actually drawn from lil' statues, so that's an option if you... happen to have nude statues? I dunno lol. I drew these in an art course.
Now my self portrait.
Page of hands and of feet
Try to really emphasize drawing with form in these.
Next are perspective drawings! It's recommended you have at least 2-3 examples for this.
I put these objects in just because I had em, they're not necessary. :)
Now for the fun part! Personals!
Finally we have the drawing aptitude test, and the Wendy action poses.
I'm not going to include my cover letter, but note that is a requirement as well.
Good luck to all those applying! If you happen to have little questions I'll try my best to answer them in my ask box, but I would always recommend going to the program coordinator for the most accurate information! They're info is at the bottom of the portfolio requirements pdf.
Another thing is it's a good idea to also apply to Algonquin's Foundations for Animation and Illustration program! (previously known as Pre-Animation) When I first got rejected I was accepted into Foundations and it really helped me strengthen my art to apply for animation! Also you don't even need a portfolio for it! It's just first come first served! :)

Algonquin College
"Chris was a breath of fresh air for the students in my career prep class at Algonquin college. So far they had been looking at slides and hearing about stories that don't have any parallel to their interests. Chris spoke about what it takes to be a multifaceted entrepreneur, and he was able to teach lived experience lessons while keeping them captivated (a challenge all professors encounter). His charisma and love of what he does came through in his speech, but more importantly, he gave my class a series of guides that they could reference for their own businesses."
~ Professor Rebecca Rowe, Algonquin College

Some hand practice! I've been teaching level one character design to high school students (at Algonquin College) and our next assignment is all about hands and feet! I'll do some feet practice next~
Hands, like anything else, can be reduced down to basic shapes and arcs~

Two graduates of an Inuit-led post-secondary program — one from Baker Lake, Nunavut, and another from Nuuk, Greenland — say Nunavut Sivuniksavut gave them confidence and a chance to learn in a culturally safe environment, informed by Inuit history, experience and values.
"Literally my whole life I thought there was something wrong with me. I felt like I was dumb, I could never do my homework," said Nivi Rosing, from Nuuk, who just graduated from the one-year Inuit Studies program at Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS).
The Ottawa-based program launched in 1985 with just two teachers and 10 students. Since then, more than 600 Inuit youth have attended. The program uses Inuit history to inform and empower students. This year, the program welcomed 57 students and now offers one- and two-year certificate programs accredited through Algonquin College, but taught at its own location on Rideau Street.
Growing up in Greenland, Rosing said colonial education had always been a problem for her.
"All the material we have in colonial institutions, I could literally not relate to them," she said. [...]

as much as I like the hc Vampire Cellbit I think him being a Wendigo would be far more interesting.
Sure, but the w*ndigo, as far as I’m aware, is kinda super only for specific Native American tribes to use. I believe that it’s part of the spiritual tradition of the Algonquin-speaking tribes, though I may be misremembering, and I’m sorry if I am, I’m not as much an expert in folklore as I used to be back when I studied it for my first college degree. And I’ve seen numerous Native people saying that it’s, A, super bad to spell out the w*ndigo’s name and, B, that it’s part of a closed religious practice.
So… no! :D
Vampires can consume human flesh, you know. Not all vampires suck blood, that depends on the culture and the legends. Some vampires in some cultures, especially back in the og Slavic days, were more like zombies than they were Dracula.
Fun fact, iirc vampires didn’t drink from the neck until Dracula was written. That’s because they used to drink from the chest, where the heart was, but that was Too Sexy

Not sure about in-universe but according to Algonquin College
1. Act as a liaison between the students and the academic leaders and the Students’ Association.
2. Represent your class at Class Rep Meetings.
3. Represent your class at Program Councils.
4. Ensure your classmates are properly represented and are well informed.
Wikipedia also says some additional stuff too
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_president#:~:text=A%20class%20president%2C%20also%20known,organization%20within%20a%20student%20council.
fascinating.
So I would assume that informing teachers of cheating is on the list for things a class rep should do?

Today in Christian History
Today is Saturday, August 5th. It is the 217th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar; 148 days remain until the end of the year.
1590: Meletius Pegas becomes the Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria. He will endeavor to reunite the Greek and Coptic churches.
1604: John Eliot is baptized in England. His non-conformist views will eventually prompt him to move to America, where he will found fourteen congregations of Indian Christians, translate the Bible into Algonquin, and help prepare the Bay Psalm Book—the first book printed in America. Captured by Indians, he will learn their language while in captivity.
1720: Death in England of Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, a notable poet and hymnwriter, loyal to King James II. Among her best-known religious poems is “The Atheist and the Acorn,” which depicts an atheist as a fool for trying to outguess God’s arrangements. She had also written a praise hymn beginning, “To the Almighty on his radiant throne / Let endless hallelujahs rise.”
1751: Rev. John Cuthbertson, America’s first Scottish Covenanter pastor, arrives in America. His name appears frequently as a genealogical authority because he will keep a log of births and marriages. In it, he records over five thousand family names as well as notes of six hundred marriages and almost two thousand baptisms he performs in the course of seventy thousand miles of ministerial travels.
1833: Allen B. Freeman, a young man recently graduated from a Baptist seminary, arrives to serve as a missionary in Northern Illinois, but will die of cold and exhaustion in December the following year after his horse collapses under him, forcing him to walk many miles back to Chicago.
1835: Death of Thomas McCrie, Scottish minister and church historian. He and three other divines had left the General Association Synod and formed the Constitutional Association Presbytery. He also wrote biographies of John Knox and Andrew Melville.
1844: The first assembly of Queen’s College, British Guiana, meets. The school has been established by Anglican bishop William Piercy Austin, a missionary to the South American colony.
1876: Scottish missionary Mary Slessor boards the SS Ethiopia to sail to Calabar (Nigeria). She shares the ship with a cargo of liquor.
1955: Death of Jesse Irvin Overholtzer, founder and first director of Child Evangelism Fellowship.
