Tidepools of La Jolla, California – Nursery of The Pacific Ocean Marine Life - Torrey Pines, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure
youtube
To the north and east of the beach Los Peñasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve is one of the last remaining salt marsh areas and waterfowl refuges in southern California. The marsh, coves, and tidepools are rich in sea life: limpets, shore crabs and hermit crabs, mussels, barnacles, sea anemones, and many species of snails and cast-off shells.
This is the perfect place to watch the annual gray whale migration. All year round, you can see Seals, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions in the ocean. About two hundred species of birds are protected at the reserve, including migratory ones.
Year round Resident shore birds include brown and American white pelicans, black-bellied and snowy plovers, American avocets, western sandpipers, willets, whimbrels, sanderlings, great egrets, and longbilled curlews. Occasionally, visitors may see gray foxes, bobcats, coyotes, and mule deer. Reptile residents include rattlesnakes and various other snakes and species of lizards, including the endangered horned lizard.
The Torrey Pines 2,000-acre reserve contains about 300 endangered and protected species of native plants. These vanishing habitats are home to sand verbena and beach primrose on the beach, as well as California sagebrush, California buckwheat, black sage, and coastal barrel cactus. On the cliffs other high elevations there are many chaparral plants, including chamise, manzanita, ceanothus, California scrub oak, toyon, and mountain mahogany. Many of these scrub plants in particular provide the refreshing herbal fragrance that mixes so incredibly with the ocean breeze.
Before this area was colonized by Spain, the Kumeyaay tribes migrated lived here, and migrated between here, the deserts, and the mountains throughout the seasons. The land was bountiful, and the Kumeyaay would have fished, hunted, collected crustaceans, and gathered seeds, fruit, roots, to create probably a very healthy and tasty diet. The Kumeyaay have left an indelible archaeological and cultural legacy here in San Diego county and they continue to be a strong tribal nation today both here and south of the border in Baja Norte state.
The water is usually so clean and clear here, and because of the lack of shoreline development, and the underwater marine reserve, this constantly ranks as one of the 3 cleanest beaches in SoCal. This is a wonderful rare instance of extremely valuable real estate, both being a wildlife refuge and habitat, and a beautiful escape from civilization for people to enjoy for the most part in harmony.
It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together. You can enjoy my series: Torrey Pines – La Jolla, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure, full length, 3 glorious days on the North County coast, and experience all of the different moods and landscapes from the ever-changing interplay between the coastal inversion and sunlight.

Gray Whale Watching in Baja: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure, consider going on a gray whale watching tour in Baja, California. Every year, thousands of gray whales migrate from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm waters of Baja to mate and give birth. This natural wonder provides an unparalleled opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close and personal.
Why Baja?
Baja is one of the best places in the world to observe gray whales because of its unique geography. The lagoons along the Baja coast offer a sheltered and safe haven for the whales to mate, give birth, and nurse their young. The gray whales are known to be curious and friendly, and they often approach the boats, allowing passengers to get a close-up view of these gentle giants.
When to Go
The best time to go on a gray whale watching tour in Baja is from mid-January to mid-April when the whales are in the lagoons. During this time, the mothers and their calves are the most active, providing an opportunity to see them playing, breaching, and interacting with each other. However, keep in mind that the peak season can be crowded, so it's best to book your tour well in advance.
Choosing Your Tour
There are several options when it comes to choosing a gray whale watching tour in Baja. Some tours depart from San Diego, California, and take you down the coast to the lagoons. Other tours depart from Baja itself, giving you a chance to explore the surrounding area and its culture. Depending on your preferences, you can choose from day trips or multi-day tours, small boats or larger vessels, and different levels of luxury and comfort.
What to Expect
When you arrive at the lagoons, you'll board a small boat with a knowledgeable guide who will take you to the areas where the whales are congregating. The boats are specially designed to be quiet and non-invasive, so as not to disturb the whales. The guides will also provide you with interesting facts and information about the whales, their behavior, and their habitat.
As you approach the whales, you'll be struck by their immense size and grace. You'll see the mothers swimming close to their calves, nudging them along, and teaching them the ways of the world. You may even hear the whales singing, a haunting and beautiful sound that can be heard underwater for miles. And if you're lucky, you may even witness a breach, when a whale jumps out of the water and crashes back down in a spectacular display of acrobatics.
What to Bring
To make the most of your gray whale watching tour in Baja, there are a few things you should bring with you. Dress in layers, as the weather can be cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. A camera with a zoom lens is essential for capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments. And don't forget your sense of wonder and awe!
Conclusion
Gray whale watching in Baja is an experience that should be on everyone's bucket list. It's a chance to witness the magic of nature and to connect with these magnificent creatures on a deep and meaningful level. Whether you're a nature lover, a wildlife enthusiast, or just someone looking for an adventure, a gray whale watching tour in Baja will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime. So pack your bags, book your tour, and get ready for an experience you'll never forget!

San Diego's Year Round Whale Watching Schedule
Experience the magic of migrating whales year-round! Whether you're looking to get up close and personal or witness whales from the shore, there are tons of ways to enjoy these magnificent creatures off the coast of San Diego.
Winter & Spring Gray Whale Watching
Migration Period: Mid-December - April
Each year, more than 20,000 gray whales make a 10,000-mile round-trip journey from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California, where the females give birth to their calves. After spending time in warm Baja California waters so their young can grow strong, they make the journey north again in spring. The longest known distance any mammal migrates on an annual basis, it is truly an extraordinary spectacle to observe. With 70 miles of coastline directly in the migration path, San Diego is an ideal destination to see this impressive parade of gentle giants. According to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, gray whales generally travel alone or in pods of two or three but more may be seen traveling together during peak migration season. Gray whales can grow to nearly 50 feet in length, or roughly the width of a basketball court, and cruise at an average speed of 5 knots (or about 6 mph).
Summer & Fall Blue Whale Watching
Migration Period: Mid-June - September
Blue whales, the largest creatures on Earth and thought to be among the most endangered of the great whales, may be found off the coast of San Diego from mid-June through September. In fact, the largest group of blue whales in the world, some 2,000 to 3,000, feed off the California coast during the summer months. These magnificent mammals, which can be 100 feet long, give away their location by exhaling a 30-foot column of breath into the air whose vapor can be seen from miles away. The migratory patterns of blue whales have been tracked from the Antarctic to California to Costa Rica. Changes in ocean temperature and the abundance of krill, a prime food source, over the past few years have attracted far more blue whales to San Diego's coast than in the past. Since blue whales tend to be found farther out to sea than their gray-whale cousins, it's recommended to venture on a boat trip vs. viewing from the shore in order to catch a glimpse of these incredible leviathans.

Actually, on re-reading, I think the larger problem with Part 2 of Cup Magic is that once Mike gets to San Diego, he’s mostly just passively watching the racing and not doing very much himself.
In Part 1, we have a solid, time-tested “young person moves to new town and school amidst (apparent) family problems, is lonely and bullied, makes friends and builds confidence through learning a new hobby/skill” children’s book plot. Mike adapts to his new school, bonds with his grandparents, makes friends with Hone and later Lucy, and learns to sail and gradually builds skill and knowledge. His individual story is strong and interesting even aside from learning his parents work for Team New Zealand and seeing them prepare for the America’s Cup.
(And once that plot gets underway, he also manages to contribute there— he’s the one who suggests the name “Black Magic”, and when he goes out on the chase boat with his brother, he throws across a line during a practice that prevents Black Magic from grounding on rocks.)
In San Diego, he goes out on the chase boat again early on and warns the crew to turn before they hit a whale… and then for months of diary entries, he doesn’t really do anything except watch the races and journal about them.
I think this section of the book would have been better if Mike had had his own plot happening in San Diego in parallel to the America’s Cup racing just like he did in the Auckland section. Just making friends with the children of the other team members and sailing at a club in San Diego would have been a nice continuation of his previous arc. (Would he really want to sit out the Northern Hemisphere spring and summer now that he knows how to sail?)
Actually, a good subplot for the San Diego section would be Mike drawing a comic book about the America’s Cup. That would fit with him being an aspiring cartoonist throughout the book and give him a reason to ask people questions and pay close attention to things— and maybe give more of a reason for him to interact with people from the other teams. It would also give Mike an overall goal that can be accomplished by the time the team returns home for the victory celebrations. (Since the real best ending for his story would be if we saw Mike, Hone, and Lucy back in Auckland winning their club’s racing season over the next few months, but the book doesn’t go on that far since the celebrations are the natural and most dramatic endpoint.)
I think one downside of Cup Magic being kids’ historical fiction set in the recent past at such a specific event is that there already ARE real kids who were part of the AC 1995 story, who are now grown-up, so they are sort of kept at arms-length from the fictional protagonist just like all of the other still-living real people.
And that’s not really noticeable with the adults, because how close are most kids with their parents’ co-workers, really? But here we’re told the fictional Mike Lucas is hanging out with James and Sarah-Jane Blake and Emma and Nick Blackman, and that they call themselves “the Cup Kids”. (Oddly, Grayson Coutts, in the same age group, is never mentioned at all until the final celebrations.)
However, Mike doesn’t describe his interactions with them in anything like the kind of detail he uses to talk about hanging out with his fictional friends. It’s just things like “I heard Sarah-Jane and Emma practice a song they wrote”, whereas with his invented friends Hone and Lucy, we get conversations and escapades transcribed.
I can see why Susan Battye might feel weird about fictionalizing too many details of the childhoods of people who are now adults, (especially the Blakes, who have lived most of their lives in the public eye, including when grieving after their father’s murder), and saying they had a fictional BFF who never really existed. Such an approach might require her to talk with them and get their permission, and IIRC the Blakes now live in England rather than NZ, so that could have been hard.
So instead we get this arms-length approach where we don’t get the sense that Mike is very close to people who are supposedly his good friends.

The humpback and minke whales are maybe a couple that should be observable. Balance whales should be evident all through the mid-year and gather time months. There are several cities in Mexico that are good choices for a bit of romance with their scenic beauty, history, and old world charm.

In addition, there is a host of adventure activities and sports such as golf, hiking, fishing, diving and whale watching to keep you busy.
Puerto Vallarta
Of all the destinations in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta still retains quaintness and an old feel in addition to the beautiful coastline. Its location between lush green mountains and the blue waters of the Bay of Banderas makes its setting unique. You can explore the charming town with its old tiled roof buildings and paved streets, go horseback riding on the mountain trails or hike to a nearby waterfall for a truly quiet vacation.
Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo
Located on the west coast of Mexico in the southern part of the Sierra Madre valley, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are twin cities with similar tropical settings in the midst of the mountainous region and the golden sand beaches. However, they have completely different identities. While Ixtapa offers more modern resort facilities, an ecological reserve and a busy nightlife, Zihuatanejo is more rural with a quieter atmosphere and a sheltered harbor. Ixtapa has luxury hotels, restaurants, clubs and golf courses while its unpretentious neighbor has old cafes, family run restaurants and colorful local markets. Together, they present the best of both worlds.
Before planning a romantic getaway to Mexico make sure you check on the weather as certain areas are prone to hurricanes during some seasons. Decide on whether you would like to experience the luxury of a world class resort or the quaint local charm and choose a destination accordingly.
