Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Vol 1 by CRC Payne & Starbite

This post is for fan entertainment, I’m not being paid.

I am a huge fan of Batman (he is a detective so it’s a given) and when I saw that someone was doing a new series I was interested.

When reading the series I was hooked, it shows a day and the life of the Batfam, in and out of their mask vigilante identities.

This series is very comedic and cozy to boot, it also has action and fighting as well.

Now I haven’t really followed any of the new Batman comics, I have watched character analysis videos of some new characters, like Punchline and what new nightmares the Joker has cooked up. Also, I have a newfound fear of a character that I didn’t really know too much about. When this character was introduced to me it was in that CGI cartoon series Beware The Batman. I did like that series since they cover more of the more obscure villains of Batman. When Batman Arkham Knight came well that cartoon villain went from the cartoon/cgi thing that I thought had some uniqueness, is now gone when I did research on Professor Pyg, he is probably the scariest villain to me of Batman Rouge gallery.

 But I digress back to wholesome Batfam mischief.

The volume starts off with a new member of the Batfam/Wayne family named Duke Thomas (I had to look him up since 1. I didn’t know anything about him, and I thought it was character just for this series.)

He is moving into Wayne manor; he also is a hero name Signal. Now reading more into the story I think Duke is refreshing, that he breaks the mold of the typical Wayne character-types broody and serious.

Throughout the first volume we get to see all the Bat-family Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne and the girls Orphan and Spoiler.

I like this series very much, instead of the dark and edgy Batman that I am used to seeing from cartoons and comics, we get to see a side that if feels like we normally don’t get to see. More of the civilian life that each of the characters experiences.

That these people have their own anxieties, and hardships.

I also like the running joke that they have (I have no idea if its true in the Broody comics) that Bruce has a lifetime ban from the kitchen, along with a few others as well. (The pie chapter for Thanksgiving was one of my favorites.) Another personal favorite is some of the chapters with Damian, I do pity him since he didn’t have a normal and seeing him getting a new puppy and or trying to make a friend at school, and to even when he paints.

I do see the growth that Damian has had, but he is still a little gremlin when he wants to be.

We also get other characters in this series like Talia Al Ghul, Justice League members.

oh my god you guys I've read SO MUCH this month!!! I got BIG into reread N.K. Jemisin's tremendous Broken Earth trilogy and it's been jaw-dropping, and I have been reading a HEAP of comics and manga a

on the extremely off chance there's anyone following me who doesn't think comics, manga, graphic novels, etc don't count as "real reading" lmao lol get out of here??? you're on the Reading 1000s of Pages of Old Batman Comics blog. go feel the whimsy of reading a whole graphic novel in one afternoon and maybe you'll calm down.

ANYWAY!!! what have we been reading?

Earthdivers Vol. 1: Kill Columbus (Stephen Graham Jones, Davide Gianfelice, Joana Lafuente, 2023) - Stephen Graham Jones is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I was super excited to check out his first comic series. Earthdivers takes place in the wasteland of the 22nd century, where four Native survivors have hatched a plan to try to stop the disasters that are killing the world: use a time-travelling cave to send one of their number back in time to kill Columbus before he can launch the colonization of North America. it's a one-way trip, and the time traveler will have to be ruthless to achieve their goal. beyond the attention-grabbing hook of killing Columbus, this story dives (you see what I did there) deep into an exploration of what it means to sacrifice everything for a cause and find the will to be ruthless in pursuit of the greater good. I'm not 100% sure I tracked all of the twisting threads of time travel in this first volume, but the hook is compelling and Gianfelice's art is beautiful, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the series progress!

Spoiler Alert (Olivia Dade, 2020) - at this point I've written 8000+ words about this book on my patreon and it's becoming difficult to figure out what else to say or how to say it briefly. this book ties itself up in knots with its contrivances and makes both of its protagonists look dumb in the process. I don't like either of these people but - spoiler alert! - I still think April can and should do better. Olivia Dade please call me I just want to talk.

Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 1-3 (Ryoko Kui, trans. Yen Press, 2017) - I don't need to explain Dungeon Meshi. surely you've seen the gifs of Dungeon Meshi. all that matters is that I fucking love Dungeon Meshi, this shit rules and it's going to be so hard to hold off on reading Volume 4 while I try to prioritize some other books first. this world is great, the characters are a delight and a joy, and the way that Kui is so fascinated by the food and biology and exploration of adventurer fantasy tropes in her world makes my brain go wheeeeeeeeee!!! I'm having so much fun.

The Fifth Season (N.K. Jemisin, 2015) - historically I've very seldom reread books, but I'm starting to think that I need to change my stance on that. revisiting the Fifth Season years after I first read it, with the time to really enjoy it and also the maturity and perspective to actually appreciate what Jemisin is cooking, has enhanced the experience immeasurably. a thing that really struck me this time was how artfully Jemisin depicts the way orogenes are conditioned and groomed from the jump to be subservient and scared and willing to settle for life at the margins of society; it's not something that I could totally understand the nuances of when I read this book fresh out of my first year of college. this novel and its sequels are so brilliantly devastating, I cannot say enough great things about them.

My Pancreas Broke, But My Life Got Better (Nagata Kabi, trans. Jocelyne Allen 2022) - I did it, I'm officially caught up on all of Nagata's works that have been translated into English! and man, I'm still worried about her. the experience of reading My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness hasn't quite been replicated for me; I think that was a once in a lifetime event, although I've certainly found a lot that I relate to in Nagata's subsequent struggles to sort of out anxiety, independence, art, and figuring out what kind of relationships she event wants to have in her life. at this point I feel like I'm just reading the illustrated life updates from a friend I haven't seen in a long time who stresses me out because her life is a mess. which is still interesting! but god I hope something good happens to this woman soon.

The Obelisk Gate (N.K. Jemisin, 2016) - The Fifth Season is a book about the end of the world and of one woman's personal apocalypses that happened prior to that. its sequel, the Obelisk Gate, is a book that's extremely preoccupied with the tedium of figuring out how to run a halfway-functioning society in the midst of the apocalypse, which is genuinely fascinating stuff. and it's also a book about the fear and desperation and sheer levels of exhaustion that might drive someone to decide that, fuck it, maybe the world should end and we should be done with all of this, actually. it's also a book about devotion and dependence and destruction and devouring people you love in a VERY literal way, which it must be said is pretty sexy. the stuff that pops off between Essun and Hoa in this book makes me think of Octavia Butler in the best way; I think she would have adored them. I'm so excited to get to the final book and see how this all pays off, because the first time I read it I barely understood a single goddamn thing that was happening.

I Hate This Place Vol. 1-2 (Kyle Starks, Artyom Toplin, Lee Loughridge, 2022-2023) - a short and spooky comic series that wraps up in two tight little volumes. I have some gripes with the pacing, but it makes for a fun afternoon read. a mid-tier streaming service is going to adapt this into a live action series within a couple of years, mark my worms. personally I'm fancasting Mackenzie Davis as Gabby and Samira Wiley as Trudy.

7th time loop vol 5 thoughts

Just finished volume 5 of 7th Time Loop. I don't want to wait until September for the next book! Can't believe I inhaled them all already....

Anyway, stuck some heavy spoilerific thoughts below a line here.

The reveal that the current Emperor has a massive bloodlust presence and he doesn't even try to hide it... He really is being built up to be a monster, no?

What I suspect is that in every timeline, he's been the instigator of the war, and even Arnold killing him has never been enough to stop it once the gears are in motion.

He's priming the rest of the world for a takeover - doing stuff like pouring poison into Dietrich's ears to create a failed coup attempt in that kingdom as a way to knock them out of the picture, weakening Domana by killing off their last remaining priestess (not caring that she's the cousin of his oldest son, since he views his own children as political tools.) The whole counterfeit coin business too.

Every plot has been a long con designed to provoke all the other nations into either being weakened, or into holding a massive grudge against Galkhein, all for the sake of creating a world war that can't he stopped, not even by his death, and leaving the mess for his son Arnold to clean up.

Canon vs Fanon stuff

There's a bunch of things floating around in fanfics that seemed plausible considering the series has supernatural elements, but I was slightly disappointed to find weren't in Vol 5. Maybe they'll be in volume 6????? (Spoil me in comments, go ahead.)

Arnold can take off Riche's clothes with his mind (now wouldn't that be amusing!)

Arnold has super healing powers inherited from his mom (TOTALLY believable) - this one pops up and seems to definitely be in volume 6th so I'm saying this one is probably canon, but I don't know 100% for sure

Arnold is stuck in his own time loop (I'm seriously leaning toward this, it's just his loops have been stuck as a personal hell where he can't stop his dad no matter what he does.)

Wacky things that absolutely are canon:

Arnold's eyes glow sometimes

Rishe and Arnold both have super senses. Love the way the anime depicted her picking out Count Lavinne in the crowd. They're practically Force sensitive.

Rishe is a quick study and has an eidetic memory. In modern day terms, we'd call her gifted. She doesn't forget names or faces that easily. That's it's own super power.

Rishe did study a lot of her interests as a kid, so if Arnold sent Oliver to do homework on her asking "wtf how is my future wife so amazing" the mundane answer was "she actually did do stuff like archery, horseback riding, sword training, etc., but the prince of Hermity told her to stop every one of those activities because she was better than he was."

Fan Theories I've seen

Arnold in a Loop: The reason I tend to agree with the fan hypothesis that Arnold is in his own time loop is because 1. He seemed to be under the impression that she was slightly afraid of him up until the last chapter of volume 5 (I mean, he did stab her in the chest last go round) and 2. He's way too brilliant for even a determined, workaholic 19 year old. Like Rishe, he acts like got an extra few lifetimes of learning under his belt.

He's also several steps ahead of Rishe at every turn. He already knows what's happening, and he seems genuinely delighted at how fast she catches on. And he grabs her suggestions with two hands and runs with them because they're good and valid and often present the solution to the problems he himself wasn't able to find, like a way to make Coyelles an equal partner instead of his first target for invasion.

Was her 5th loop really the first time that he encountered her? He made the gesture toward his heart that she interpreted as "Shoot me if you can" but what if in a prior loop, say the 2nd or 3rd, he saw a cute scholar in Coyelles and wanted to try to encounter her again in later loops but didn't again until the 5th? What he he's bumped into her in every life before, but she only developed her own hunter's sense in the 5th life so never realized it? What it he's been crushing on a girl for 30 years and only by chance in the 7th loop did she choose a different escape route and bump into him?

Dream Vision Arnold: Another fan theory I've seen is Arnold having dream visions of all the wars started in all of Rishe's lives in the future. And that, too, would jive with him having inherited the blood of the goddess and having majority and some notion of events that haven't come to pass yet. (And also why he insists on calling Rishe his wife even though they aren't married yet. Probably saw enough visions of her that the moment he saw her jump off the balcony, he went "oh. That's the girl from my dreams I'm gonna marry. okay. get her. GET HER NOW.")

My own pet theories:

Arnold's mother and the Crusade Church - Fan theories center around the idea of Arnold getting his super powers from his mother's side. (Although his dad is a monster too.) What if the Goddess picked Arnold as her champion of revenge against his dad and that's why he's stuck in a loop (and Rishe is the one getting dragged along with him cuz she's a soulmate?)

Opposing forces: Arnold's father works for another god/goddess (maybe a war god or something) and believes it is his mission in life to bring the world war about, and that's why Arnold feels like he has to stop him

Possible prophesies: The fact that Arnold's father committed straight up infanticide and eventually killed or had all his concubines killed makes me wonder if there was some sort of oracle that told him that his death would come at the hands of his own child with hair of a different color. (Arnold kills him anyway in the six loops so far.) This opens the door for RISHE (daughter in law) being the one to get to murder him in loop 7, which frees Arnold of the sin of patricide but has her committing regicide instead.... Not that she'd care, she's already killed plenty in all of her loops, especially the last two. But since Arnold seems to be getting ideas of involving the Crusade Church, maybe having her take on the role of the champion of the goddess might absolve her of that crime. Especially if the new Emperor Arnold Hein forgives her.

Rishe actually is one of the chosen of the goddess, and Arnold is the only one that knows.

Final Thoughts

Rishe so worried about the public kiss during the wedding ceremony that she hasn't stopped to think about what comes after is kind of amusing. Granted, she trusts Arnold not to hurt her and that he won't do anything she doesn't want him to. But still.

(Also, getting kissed senseless is a pretty nice birthday present.)

Even if it's his first loop or his seventh too, Arnold is absolutely besotted with her. He's a lovesick fool and he's trying so hard to keep it together in public.

Tibetan Yak - 30 Day Welfare Task Event

This is the newest 30-day welfare event in CN, the Tibetan Yak "Wind Flag Chanting Wishes". This is the second 30-day welfare event after the "Orchid Lotus Splendor". It's similar to the lifetime task suits, except it's 30-days instead of 3 months and you get a bunch of free stuff (diamonds, gold, stamina, star coins, association coins, crystal shoes, express passes, site tickets, heart tickets) on the tic-tac-toe board. Best of all it is FREE and leaves a lot of room for error. XD

Here are the requirements:

Danmei Rec Meme!

How long have you been into danmei, how did you get into it / what was your first danmei?

I read MDZS in 2018 if that counts? But otherwise I saw Global Examination randomly mentioned in around September last year and thought it looked interesting. Read the manhua, enjoyed it, continued with the novel and have been randomly reading stuff since. (English Vol 1 is open for preorders btw!)

Don't have a particular answer so I'll go with the two MCs from my first two faves above :D You Huo and Chi XiaoChi. Competant, badass, rebellious, q_q puts themselves at risk to help others. JiuHuo and LouChi are both very soft and adorable and wholesome ships that fight their way to be together q_q.

Hmm. I haven't been able to get into any of Priest's works. Might be the writing style, I managed to finish Mo Du which was nice but somehow just don't feel satisfied :X

Also I liked MDZS and TGCF but didn't particularly enjoy SVSSS.

Anything you've been meaning to read but still haven't?

Ballad of Sword and Wine / Qiang Jin Jiu - tried a few times but finding it hard to get through the narration / heavy world building. Will try again at some point.

MC has a dream where ML is tied up. Has no idea why. Dreams materialise. Wakes up and finds Dream!ML tied up. ML also wakes up, and sees his Dream!MC glaring at them. *Awkward silence* Dream!ML starts flirting with MC. Everyone is horrified.

Are there any particular genres / tropes you enjoy / don't enjoy? Aka - any useful info for people to send you recs ;D?

I am a sucker for amnesia tropes and hidden identity tropes. Also tend to appreciate light hearted narration / comedic undertones. Which probably explains my two faves lmao. Mystery and angst keep me going.

The Origin of the Species.

Here is the impossibly rare amp I was going apesh*t about seeing on Saturday:

If you own, have ever played, or covet a converted "Filmosound" movie projector amp - here is one of its rare forefathers. This one magically appeared on Marketplace last week and sold instantaneously, Chris being the lucky winner! Originals like this NEVER come up for sale...there were only ~25 ever made.

Bernard Raunig of was an electronics repair person and tinkerer, who purchased a lot of surplus Bell & Howell model 385 film projectors being auctioned off by a Hamilton, Ontario school board in the early 90s. According to the article by @colinjcripps in @fretboardjournal Electric Annual Vol 2, Raunig had a notion he could extract the audio amplifier sections from these movie projectors and repurpose them as guitar amplifiers - making him, I suppose, the first "upcycler" in the guitar business! The cabinet was homemade from solid pine and covered in sail canvas which was then brushed with lacquer.

The very first of Bernard's conversions was sold to Canadian musician Colin Cripps (at the time of the band Crash Vegas, and later playing with such musical icons as Kathleen Edwards and Blue Rodeo), who skeptically auditioned it at Raunig's insistence. In his article, Colin says that he had never seen anything like the "Bernie", but despite his hesitance he immediately fell in love with the sound produced by the unlikely little contraption, and bought it on the spot. Colin's "Bernie No. 1" has appeared on countless recordings since that day in late 1993, and no doubt has played a huge role in the popularization of the Filmosound guitar amp conversion "cult".

Well, now I have seen *two* original "Bernie" amps! I am not likely to see any more in my lifetime. I am grateful to have friends like Chris and Colin who let me take snaps of all their interesting and historically significant gear to share with you!
