And, if I recall well the novel meta I have read, it takes a completely different direction - there, Xue Fangfei realised from the beginning that the princess was the main enemy, and so all her revenge efforts were directed towards her, she didn't really bother with Shen Yurong at all (it's also true that Shen Yurong was completely different from his drama self as well).

I continue to love what the drama did with the husband. It would have been so predictable and boring to make him a villain who would do anything for a promotion but he's just a pathetic broken man who loved his wife but not as much as his own life and perhaps only realized just how much he loved her after he committed unforgivable acts against her.

I love that he's haunted by her even as he knows she's alive. The haunting did not stop after his finding out.

This whole scene was amazing, where he does talk to her in the flesh and she confirms to him that he's nothing to her.

I loved this confrontation for her because she deserves to live free of her past and her pain but for him it's a different kind of liberation - a bleak one but one nonetheless - she is alive so he did not kill her after all, but he's dead to her and he can't even console himself in her past love, not really. She's not dead but she might as well be as far as possibility of ever being together is.

Love him walking through his own music video afterwards.

The thing is, her being alive has dispelled some of his guilt and by that restored some of his sanity but it's not good news for the princess because now the man who's snapped is playing with all his own (bleak as fuck) marbles. With the confirmation of her being alive on top of the confirmation of her understandable hatred and on top of long realized confirmation that the princess doesn't like him or love him or even care if he lives or dies and just wants to torture him for kicks, and with any sort of hope or fear tormented out of him, this is a man with nothing left to lose but a hell of a lot of plans for revenge of his own.

I mean, look at this scene, where he's kneeling in the cold/snow all night. These are some serious Tantai Jin eyes here.

And when he goes in and she keeps slapping him, there is no fear, there is no shame, there is no self loathing, there is not even mute endurance, the way there used to be. This is a man who is letting a lunatic vent as needed to get whatever he wants done.

I mean, look at this man as he says this to the princess. He's barely bothering to conceal how false his words are even if the killing intent is very real. If I were her, I'd sleep with a knife under my pillow but she's so demented she doesn't get it.

Instead she pokes him some more, another confirmation as to how she doesn't see him as human.

Lady, this is the face of a man who would like to wear your skin as a cloak. You are so epically DUMB!!!!

He's got more human emotion imagining his wife than in the whole above scene. And once again, I love love LOVE how he's haunted by the woman he very much now knows is alive. Because what's dead is his chance at happiness and his happy marriage and any real path forward.

It is SUCH an unusual take on the usual villain from past life/evil spouse our FL must overcome and I love it!

So exactly what kind of yandere is Noelle? Is she prone to kidnapping? I feel like she might be a middle ground between Atalanta and Vivien.

What exactly makes her fall in love with a darling?

I've been thinking about this ask for the better part of a month, and I think I can classify Noelle as a possessive yandere with manipulative tendencies.

"A Possessive Yandere type needs to own and dominate their Darling. They become aggressive if their ownership is threatened and grow angry if their Darling makes independent decisions. They want the Darling utterly dependent on them and they will remove all of their safety nets to do so: friends and family members who support them, financial assets and savings, much-needed resources, etc. "

Let's talk about Noelle's childhood first. Noelle grew up extremely poor in a small town in a trailer park with 4 other sisters. She is the second oldest and, because of her mom's indifference towards her daughters, Noelle and Odette basically raised the other daughters and to this day send money back to help them. Noelle spent her childhood unable to control anything. She couldn't wear her hair long or dress the way she wanted to, she couldn't control the endless line of stepfather walking in and out, and she couldn't control that there was no food or heat in the house because her mom would rather spend the money on beer than essentials. She lied and got her first job at 12 to try and buy food and clothes for her sisters.

Now let's see how this has affected Noelle's adulthood. Noelle is kind of a delicate person. She barely eats and sleeps, and looks somewhat frail. Her apartment is spotless, she hates mess. The only reason she has a cat is because she felt pity because it looked like her as a child. In her relationships, Noelle wants all your attention. Don't even look at anyone else because you belong to her and she's not letting you go. She doesn't want to kidnap you though, she prefers you to come of your own accord. Using her impeccable computer skills, she will slowly take her time studying and testing out hypotheses on you. She will get to the absolute root of your soul and figure you out. From that, she can build you back up to what she wants.

Noelle actually dates, unlike Atalanta. She will research you mildly, go on a date, and reevaluate what she thinks about everything. She has been on several dates in the past, searching for "The One", her perfect Darling. You actually start out dating Noelle. It can take 5 or 7 or even 10 dates before she is certain she wants you, and she has gotten close only to discard people in the past for something unforgivable. She learns your habits, subtly doing things to make herself seem more pleasant in your eyes. She won't change herself, but she will try to do things to make you happy. She does like to see you happy, but her happiness is just as important.

She gets angry upset when you see your friends though. She believes only she should have your attention and anyone else involved is stealing what's Noelle's. She will use her extreme power and influence to ruin your relationships; expect your friends to quit calling but they'll never explain why. She will get your job to transfer you to or near the Montclair building, or simply get you fired/on leave altogether. You get evicted, you can move in with her. Your life will slowly change until you are Noelle's sweet little housewife, spending every day inside waiting for Noelle to get home. If you're good, you can see/spend the day with your new best friend: Atalanta's Darling. You 4 are a lovely friend group who spend lots and lots of time together. I sure hope you get along because you don't get to talk to many people otherwise. The most independent decision you make is what to eat for dinner, and even that is not common.

Noelle might not kidnap, but she takes away your freedom nonetheless.

You think she's the middle ground, I personally think she's worse.

The rest of the class vacillate between trying to hang back and trying to get closer, see what’s going on. Blood makes everyone curious. Rainier crouches, touches Vivien’s face. At once his eyes fly open. They’re flooded black, like he’s high on sludge. Rainier hisses in a breath and in the time it takes to exhale, the darkness slips away. Hazy at first, Vivien blinks rapidly, then groans. He starts to sit up. Rainier puts a hand on his chest. “You hit your head. Stay still.” He almost adds sweetheart and has to bite his tongue. Jesus, is this what caring feels like?

I read Renfield: Slave of Dracula... and you might want to, too?

I'll be honest, I had a lot of trouble getting through the first half of the book, but after that it got a lot better. Some highlights and a brief spoliery overview below.

Things of note:

Renfield's first name: Ryland (M is not elaborated)

Renfield's family: wife Catherine and daughter, Vivien (Vixie)

Special powers: Dracula can possess him??

New and exciting things: Dracula's brides come to England!!!

They turn Renfield into a vampire!!!

By the time I finished the book, I kinda forgot the beginning. Most of it was about Seward being rejected and whiny. Renfield made a fortune being a trader in India. That's where he got into some evil deity, Wotan? For a while he thinks Dracula is Wotan, but later realizes that they are different things. Throughout his stay he writes long letters to his wife, who is being hunted by her evil family. The brides follow Dracula to England and decide to enlist Renfield with all his money and property to help them get established. They are pissed that Dracula is making himself a new harem. Renfield realizes Dracula will kill him for hooking up with his brides, so they decide to make him a vampire! They bite him, and all three give him their blood, so he'll be subservient to all three of them. The youngest bride, Nomie, is very nice to Renfield and they become friends. When Dracula kills him, Renfield later returns as a vampire. When he becomes a vampire, his insanity lifts, and he realizes that the reason he's insane is because he killed his beloved wife and daughter O_O. To save them from a fate worse than death - being found by Catherine's evil family. He goes to hang out with their corpses, and that's where all four vampires get together and Dracula is like "If you're slave to them, you're slave to me too." They all go back to Romania. Renfield decides to commit suicide via the anti-Dracula squad, but first he wants to make sure Nomie is safe and provided for. He continues to write letters to Catherine, saying he'll get back to her soon, he just gotta take care of his new friend. When Van Helsing goes to kill Dracula's brides, he kills the older two, but Nomie is just too pretty, so he just stares at her until she wakes up, kisses him, and runs away. He lies to the others that he killed all three of them. After Dracula and the two brides are dead, Nomie is free, and she has all of Renfield's money and properties. She asks Renfield to not commit suicide, and he's like "Sure!" And they live happily ever after in India.

If we're to start anywhere in this story, perhaps we should start here: a camera shot, tightly held, focused on a a hand scribbling furiously in a notebook. There's little to note regarding the hand: a claudaugh ring on one finger, nails tidly trimmed, cuticles pushed back. The only speck in site are faint droplets of ink dotting the hand in question's fingers.

Let the camera pull up, tracing the tight bent tension of a arm, a beast poised to spring. Note too, the casual blazer, bearing all the marks of a fresh ironing. In the background of the shot lies a bag, only half unpacked, closet hanging open as well. Clothes dot the bed in blobs of color, and a handful of books lie on the desk in riotous lumps. And finally, the camera focuses on the face of the figure— a woman in thought, her forehead pinched, mouth set in a firm line.

Vivien sits in her room, hair pulled back into a meticulous bun, scribbling at her notebook. It was a ritual of sorts, a way of pulling herself back into herself, reminding her of the things that mattered in the here and now. The words themselves are practically illegible, shorthand sentiments of neuroses still at hand— you're capable, okay? also, it's nice to meet new people, you haven't gotten the chance in ages.

And so on and so forth. Finding the ritual done, she tosses the notebook and pen into a tote, flinging it over her shoulder. She had opted for being her polished self today— the blouse and blazer de-wrinkled with the old bathroom trick that had saved her in grad school, earrings in a subtle silver, every bit of her the thing that she knew she could be— that she knew she was.

That thing being a sure and steady gaze, an infinite patience, an eye for balance. Or at least, that was what she hoped to tell the others.

At the coffee shop, she pauses, folds her hands in front of her just so. There's something almost nostalgic about a huddle of people, crowded around a table too small for them. Some of them ping points of recollections— names and faces settling like film on the surface of memory. Others feel like a knife pick— memory blasted into desolation, bile rising in her stomach. She swallows it, forces her smile, holds back her shoulders.

"Hi, you're the rest of the team, right? I'm Vivien Jiāng, previously a Junior Archivist for RAISA at Site-7."

She cuts her teeth on the previously, allows herself to concede how strange it feels. That was then, this is now. A hand curls protectively around the strap of her tote bag, finger idly rubbing against the texture of it, reminding herself to stay grounded.

"But I suppose you should know me as Au Fait. That's my callsign, anyway. It's supposed to mean something about having knowledge."

It feels dangerously close to a lie, what she says (or at least, a lie to her). After all, French courses for the entirety of college meant she knew the meaning, held the detailed knowledge that the name implied. But she couldn't give a lecture. That had gone disastrously the last time she'd tried to talk about that language.

"I worked with maintaining the digital SCP archives and catching discrepancies in them, as well as helping general SCiPNET upkeep and data issues. Think of me as a computer guy who loves excel sheets and the smell of old paper, and you should have a good idea of what my last five or so years looked like."

She glances over at the counter, smile weakening faintly. She'd fully forgotten to have food before this, hadn't she?

"Um— I do want to meet all of you, but do you mind if I grab a coffee first?"

And the thing is this relationship is horrifying not because she likes hurting and humiliating him (that can be okay with joyful consent and aftercare), but that she is taking specific pleasure in doing all of that against his will, knowing that he sees no choice but to submit to her whims, even when it kills him inside.

They would be toxic as hell in any circumstances, and they're even more so considering the incredibly unbalanced power dynamics. I think your observation about it being the inverse of the concubine/mad king trope is exactly right.

Good Lord, they are not being subtle.

Honestly, I hope FL saves her revenge on him for last because I want him marinade in this self-made hell of being a toy to a mad woman who rejoices in stripping him of his last delusions of righteousness and self-respect and he can do nothing about it for as long as he can.

I hope you lie in that bed you made for a long long LONG time!

(1995) A Streetcar Named Desire (Heinemann Plays Edition), Tennessee Williams. 13/09/2024 - 14/09/2024

Favourite quote: "[Blanche]: People don't see you - men don't - don't even admit your existence unless they are making love to you"

A CLASSIC! I studied this for 2 years, have read it countless times, and I still got excited at the idea of reading it again. I still believe my key theories that I did back in sixth form, there is so much you can take from this play but sex and masculinity vs. femininity are still the main points Williams is stressing in my opinion. He portrays sex in SO many different ways, SO consistently throughout the entire plot, opening the first scene with Stanley hurling a package of red, bloody meat at Stella and obviously ending the play with Stanley raping Blanche. There are so many other good examples so I'm just gonna list them: the "reeeeeed hots" vendor, Steve's story about the hen and the hungry rooster, the very description of New Orleans as gaudy, hot and loud, the coke bottle foaming over and spilling onto Blanche's white skirt, Stanley (and the other men) being constantly described as wet and sweaty.

The whole dynamic between Stanley and Stella are essential to getting across the key points of the play to me, people tend to focus on Stanley and Blanche for obvious reasons. Stanley beats Stella (during her pregnancy but also it is hinted these beatings happen frequently) and when he goes to win her back he is described as bellowing in wet, skin-tight clothes - she goes back to him after each violent episode and actively enjoys the rush of it. At the very end of the play, as Blanche is being taken away to an asylum (presumably), Stanley comforts his sobbing wife by "fondling" her breasts - their whole relationship is based on physical (often sexual) acts. The film with Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh actually changes this ending to Stella taking her baby and leaving Stanley - a bit less depressing than the reality where he gets away with assaulting his wife's siter. There is a whole thing to be said too about Stanley being the characterization of a new brutal type of masculinity vs. the more feminine gentleman stereotype that Blanche and Stella grew up around. Mitch was potentially Blanche's saviour when he was courting her, as he was the most gentle out of all of the men in the play. However, Stanley arguably corrupts him when he spills the secrets of Blanche's past, which then results in Mitch trying to rape Blanche himself.

Blanche is a great character in general, you have to feel incredibly sorry for her as a reader. She is an outdated, severely mentally ill woman who uses sexual relations with men in an attempt to feel safe but ultimately it is sex that causes her symbolic death. Everything about her is fake/lies, she cannot come to terms that she is no longer a rich Southern Belle. She wants kindness but was cruel to her (gay? bi?) husband, Allan Gray, and his suicide literally haunts her. I feel like there is part of Williams' sister Rose in the character of Blanche too, she was schizophrenic.

There is definitely a lot to be said about Allan too, and he isn't even a physical character in the play. His whole presence is polka music and a gunshot but it does SO MUCH for the plot. I think Allan is some sort of manifestation of Williams' own sexuality and his struggles with it throughout his life. A lot of his work has been influenced by his childhood and dysfunctional family so this would make sense.

Overall this play is actually incredible, Williams' work is incredible in general and I really recommend him!
