...you mentioned a time limit, and an injury before.
It... may not be my place to ask, but. What comes?
-Kane
Ah.
Well, I guess it’s gotta come out sometime.
(OOC: tw for terminal illness(?), injury, minor gore, blood, death. TL;DR, a description of an injury from a Basilisk Anticognition Hyperfractal Engine)
I wasn’t always from the Baronies, yknow? Nah, I’m a Union boy through and fuckin’ through. Grew up on a core world, joined the Union Navy as a lancer, served in Union peacekeeping forces on the Dawnline Shore for a lot of my life.
On the Shore, my squad bounced around a fuckin’ lot. Wherever the fightin’ was thickest, wherever there was the most danger, we’d go to protect civilian population centers from gettin’ utterly demolished. Meant we fought alongside pretty much every damn faction in this fight, helped whoever was protectin’ the little guy, y’know? It also meant we fought against every damn faction too.
I can’t remember which world it was, can’t remember a lot about the situation, really. Wasn’t supposed to be a huge Ungratefuls presence on that front in particular, was just supposed to be a simple protectin’ a city center from Armory goons tryin’ to root out Barony officials and steamrollin’ civilians to do it. Fuckin’ Armory bastards. I remember bein’ in Two For Flinching, remember holdin’ off a couple Tokus while my squadmates prepped their chassis behind my shields. I was the only one lookin’, the only one who could see past the steel, I—
IPS-N frames, Union Navy, we only really pack the tech we think we’re gonna be needin’. Ain’t gonna get up close? Don’t bring the fuckin’ hammer. Ain’t gonna need explosions? Don’t pack the breaching charges. Ain’t gonna see a Gorgon? Don’t pack the fuckin’ memetic shielding.
I don’t… I don’t remember much past seein’ the flash, I only got glimpses and all those glimpses are is fuckin’ excruciating pain. Apparently, I fuckin’ froze. Apparently, when my squad retreated, they had to leave me behind. Apparently, I wouldn’t stop screamin’ over the comms. Apparently, my brain bled so much it came outta my damn eyes.
Dunno how I got back, someone must’ve found me, took pity. The docs, they… they did what they could, did fuckin’ admirably, too. They managed to reverse the encephalitis, stop the bleedin’, reverse a lotta the original damage. That shit, though, the paracausal shit? It fuckin’ digs in, gets its hooks in you. It doesn’t fuckin’ leave.
They couldn’t stop the deterioration.
I’m fine, most days. A low-level headache and some fuckin’ brain fog ain’t shit now that I’m here. Sometimes I just… blank out, though. Stop, go unresponsive, never fuckin’ remember it afterwards. Docs called it catatonia, I think. Kinda like dissociation but it ain’t got a fuckin’ trigger, nothin’ you can do but wait it out neither. That’s the scary shit. Then there’s the night terrors, the fuckin’ migraines so bad it feels like my head’s explodin’, the fucked up memory and processing, the bleedin’ from my eyes. These things flare up bad sometimes, but they ain’t constant.
The symptoms have been gettin’ worse since the fuckin’ injury, ain’t nothin’ the docs can do. Apparently, it’ll just keep gettin’ worse. Apparently, new symptoms’ll keep popping up. Apparently, I got about few years before the bad days outnumber the good, a few more until the bad days are all I got, then...
It’s terrifying.
It’s… I’ve made my peace with it, I think. Ain’t nothin’ can be done. Arvantiel’s tryin’, sold xeir Calendula to fund research on figurin’ out how to save me, tryin’ xeir damndest to give me a couple more good years. I love ‘em for it, I really do, I… I don’t wanna break her heart if it doesn’t pan out. All that love, and ze gave it to a man with an expiration date. Christ-the-Buddha, they can’t even think about it most days. I try not to bring it up around him.
But that’s why I’m comfortable layin’ down my life like that, pissin’ off that Violet bitch like she ain’t got all the resources she needs to off me. I ain’t got much to lose. A death in battle’s easier on Arvantiel than watchin’ me go out slow. I ain’t seekin’ it out, not at all, I want all the time I can get with xem before I go, but if it comes then so fuckin’ be it.
If y’all fuckin’ pity me over this I’m killin’ you, by the way. Dyin’ doesn’t mean I ain’t still the same man with correct mech opinions tellin’ uppity nobles to go fuck themselves. It’s just a fact. Ain’t nothin’ none of us can do.

I'm not sure how to word this so forgive me if it sounds odd but would the mimes be considered parasites from a more scientific standpoint? Considering they look for living hosts and such. I hope I conveyed that right I don't want to sound rude ^ ^;
Not quite, but I understand what you're asking.
Mimes can-- but do not need to if they do not want to-- seek out a host that is capable of life, but currently is not alive. Life in this instance means capable of functioning through an energy source, and not alive means not actively receiving the required energy in order to function.
So this includes: the recently but vitally intact deceased as well as animals, dying plants, unpowered electronics, dead but undamaged electrical grids.
I believe from a scientific point of view, they would be participating in some form of forceful mutualism, especially in organic hosts where they prevent further decay of the body by providing energy and reviving dead cells. In return, mimes gain near-complete control of the mind and body of the host, and are the only thing that can ensure the body continues to thrive as intended.
#brambleramble#some living believe that the deceased's consciousness is revived but suppressed in a host too#like they are aware of their body being used#actually. its sort of like possession in a way. if it's viewed like that at least.#so yeah forceful mutualism lol#organisms are so much more of a safe bet for hosting#because they have a ton of built in ways to fix things if something goes wrong. cell functions and all.#but electronics it's like#they can host a 3DS and get dropped a little too hard and suddenly they're just dead. gone.#because something vital inside got knocked out of place critically#and there are no mechanics inside to reverse this so the ability to cycle energy abruptly ends#which means that mime is just goneso.#in electronics they don't have the luxury of a failing body as a warning sign to get out before it's too late#sorry i know you didn't ask about all that but I'm sleepy and rambly tonight i guess

The word for sin is hamartia, which originally had to do with shooting and literally means a missing of the target. The man who refuses to accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord has missed the target in life. He dies with life unrealized; and he therefore dies unfitted to enter into the higher life with God.

Strap in, folks. This will be a post on how Roy Mustang uses his flame alchemy: which hands he uses, how much he moves, how much fire he produces, et cetera. This will be image heavy with GIFs. Because of that, I’m putting most of this under a readmore. As a side-note: iIf you want to see how I broke down the science of his alchemy, I’ve got a headcanon post about it here: link.
Let’s get started!
First and foremost, let’s look back to the 2003 anime and Conqueror of Shamballa. We’re going straight to where Roy’s alchemy really shines through for both the audience (us) and those around him: Fullmetal vs Flame.
This is the first transmutation he does when “fighting” with Edward. There’s a bit of a flourish as he flicks his wrist, and he uses three fingers. The result is a large, flashy explosion that sends Edward backwards; after all, Roy doesn’t actually want to use his alchemy on Edward. In fact, Roy generally tries to avoid using his alchemy on other human beings. He almost always uses it adjacent to others, creating explosions to impair the enemy, not kill.
In that episode in particular, Roy is doing one thing that’s worthy of note: he’s using this as a teaching opportunity. It’s a mock battle, so he turns it into a training to teach Edward things he needs to know when fighting. All of his dialogue makes that clear as well when he quotes from The Art of War by Sun Tzu (something he did in the manga as well with this fight and with Lust).
Another note: he makes it dramatic with his taunts and general tone of voice because he also views this as a way to show off what he could do to everyone watching. Flame alchemy is the reason people are afraid of getting on this man’s bad side and why the war in Ishval ended quicker once Fuhrer Bradley issued Order 3066.
The problem with that, as Edward quickly finds out, is that gloves come in pairs. Roy shows that he is capable of using both hands to transmute, and he makes a show of it. He’s just as skilled using his left hand. Three fingers, a bit of a flourish as he flicks his wrist and creates a large and tightly controlled explosion. It’s smaller than the first one due to the distance, and he only wants to destroy the cannon. Nothing else.
And, of course, he’s smirking at this. Someone underestimated him again, and he loves it. He loves showing people that there’s more to him than what they see.
Now, let’s look at another, albeit smaller, transmutation from the 2003 anime:
For those unaware of the context, that piece of paper contained intelligence Roy’s date gathered, and he wanted to ensure no one else got their hands on it. This time, there’s nowhere near as much of a flourish as he raises his right hand, uses three fingers, and creates a small, controlled fire. He’s making a small show out of using his alchemy for this purpose, hence the flourish, but nowhere near as grand as when he fought with Edward.
Again and again, I will emphasize that Roy Mustang is an actor. He’s putting on a show for everyone around him so others don’t see that cunning ambition. He makes his alchemy look dramatic because that’s what he wants other people to see. It’s not just limited to the 2003 anime either.
In the first episode of Brotherhood, Roy goes out to contend with Isaac McDougal, the Freezer Alchemist, head on. With both of these transmutations, Roy puts his entire upper body into it without really needing to, thus putting on a show for the other soldiers watching him. His gestures are dramatic when he only actually needs two or three fingers to make his transmutations happen. He wants others to view him as someone who likes showing off and someone who acts without thinking.
And Hawkeye backs him up. During the first episode, we hear her say, “When will he learn?” She’s reinforcing that belief, and we see her do it again when he faces off with Scar.
Before this moment, Roy does a few things to set the stage:
1. He shoots off his gun to get Scar’s attention. This gives him time to see just how close Scar is to Edward and Alphonse, who are in horrible condition. 2. He confirms that Scar was behind Shou Tucker’s murder. In doing so, he prompts Scar to share some of his motive. 3. He asks Scar why he’s going after State Alchemists in particular. Scar doesn’t give a direct answer to that, instead choosing to tell Roy that if he’s going to interfere, he’ll kill him too.
While he’s doing this, Roy is not wearing his gloves. He knows that getting his gloves wet will make it impossible for him to use his alchemy. As this post mentions, Roy is a war veteran with years of experience as an alchemist. He’s not about to put on his gloves to fight when he can’t use them. That’d be downright foolish.
So, when he puts on one of his gloves after tossing his gun to Hawkeye, it’s yet another show, and it’s a tactical one. This scene has layers to it, and I’ll try and tackle all of them.
Hawkeye instantly knows what he’s about to do when he tosses her his gun, and thus she does one thing: she says his name. Scar didn’t recognize him on sight as a State Alchemist, after all, and they needed to shift his attention off Edward and Alphonse to keep them safe. Roy reinforces that he’s the Flame Alchemist, and he purposefully hams this up to make Scar come at him. He even begins to close the distance between the two of them to encourage Scar to do what he wants.
This transmutation obviously doesn’t happen. He moves forward, stands still, and rubs three fingers together to create a puff of smoke. Scar tries to take him out right then and there, but can’t because of Hawkeye. She backed up Roy without hesitating, and she started shooting with two guns once she had the chance. There was distance between the Elrics and Scar now. Shooting earlier ran the risk of Edward getting hurt more than he already was or killed. No one wanted to risk that.
What we didn’t know when this scene happened is Hawkeye’s deep connection to flame alchemy and Roy Mustang. She may not be an alchemist, but she knows the strengths and weaknesses of Roy’s alchemy, the alchemy her father created. The amount of trust Roy placed in her during this encounter is off the charts.
One last thing: Roy didn’t move his arms much when doing this transmutation. No flourish. No extra dramatics. He kept it simple. There wasn’t a need to make it more complex. When Roy isn’t trying to put on a show, and he’s focused solely on the mission in front of him, he doesn’t move much at all.
Barely flicks his wrist as he transmutes, and he creates a powerful explosion that engulfs part of what appears to be a city. This attack is devastating.
Obviously the circumstances behind him using his alchemy are different in this case. With Lust, he had to rely on using a lighter as ignition. There was also the fact that he was seriously injured and in excruciating pain. Had that last one not been a factor, I doubt he would’ve acted differently. Lust even comments in both the manga and Brotherhood that Roy is calm and focused. Again, he barely moves when unleashing a devastating attack, and he kills a creature that supposedly can’t die.
The only dramatic part of this transmutation was the fact that Roy needed to turn to see his target. That’s it. He started the transmutation as he turned, not giving his enemies enough time to try and strike back. Quick, and he disabled them with ease.
Not a lot of movement on this one either. He only moves his hand to direct his shot while using three fingers. In seconds, he kills the Immortal Soldiers that gave Edward and co. a lot of trouble. These were beings that seemingly couldn’t die, and Roy kills them off while making it look effortless.
He’s not trying to put on a show. There’s no need for it. He’s in the mindset of ending the fight quickly while only using the necessary amount of force. Every single one of these transmutations have that in common: they’re controlled and precise. His face also makes his purpose clear. In all of those shots, he’s frowning or otherwise keeping a serious expression.
In general, we can assume that if Roy’s using his alchemy to stage a performance of sorts, he’s going to be more dramatic with his movements. If he’s using his alchemy with his focus solely on the fight in front of him, he’s going to limit his movement. There are only three exceptions to this. One takes place in Conqueror of Shamballa while the other two are in Brotherhood during the Promised Day.
Let’s tackle CoS first, specifically with this gifset. In that moment, we have to consider all of the circumstances surrounding it. For starters, Roy cannot see out of his left eye, and he hasn’t used his alchemy in years. He’s a bit out of practice. It takes effort to transmute, hence why he puts almost his entire upper body into it. Alchemy transmutations do take energy to perform. Most of the time, Roy only needs to expend mental energy. But, again, due to the surrounding circumstances, he had to expend physical energy too.
Now, onto the Promised Day. Y’all knows what happens right after the Immortal Soldiers. Envy enters the scene, and they reveal the truth that Roy’s spent the last several months searching for: they were the one to kill his best friend, Maes Hughes.
Up until this specific moment, Roy never uses both hands at once. He might wear both gloves, but he’ll only use one hand to transmute. Using both hands is excessive force, lacking in mercy, and it requires him to spend more time on calculations. He killed a Homunculus and the Immortal Soldiers with one hand already. He’s proven that he doesn’t need both gloves to get the results he wants. This is the only time he ever uses both.
Not only that, but, unlike with his fight with Lust or the Immortal Soldiers, he doesn’t stay still. He’s putting his entire body into doing these transmutations. Is it because he’s trying to put on a show? Trying to emphasize to Envy that their actions had consequences? Showing off just how powerful he is?
The answer is none of the above. What makes his fight with Envy unique is that he’s also vocal during it. He usually only has dialogue during his transmutations if it’s a performance. When he’s focused on his mission, he hardly says a word. With Envy, not only does he get vocal, but he gets nasty with his dialogue. He goes into graphic detail about what he’s doing, doesn’t hold back with his threats, and he lets emotion come through his voice.
Those emotions—all of that grief that he’s kept buried and masked with anger—are what triggers his need to expend physical energy on this fight. He can hardly contain those emotions anymore, and thus he lets them out with his movements and alchemy in tandem. He stops holding back, and he loses complete control. He gives all of himself to this fight.
His hand shakes before he can get that transmutation out. His breathing is heavy. He’s yelling. This is physically straining him because he refuses to hold back for Envy. He wanted to give them the worst punishment possible.
Flame alchemy is complex and difficult to perform. In order to be effective, Roy needs to maintain tight control, account for many factors in his calculations, and he must never use more force than needed. In Ishval, he saw the consequences of using too much force, and he made the conscious decision to never allow himself to go that far again. He doesn’t even use his alchemy that much save for when he needs to. When he does, he keeps himself calm and focused.
Even later during the Promised Day against Father, Roy has that logic going. Look at this gifset from when he has Hawkeye directing his transmutations. During that scene, she has to tell him not to hold back, to not throttle his flames against the most powerful enemy he’s ever faced. Yes, he’s hesitating because he can’t see what he’s doing, but it’s also because he doesn’t ever want to use more force than needed. He’s careful, and he just saw what happened when he lost control.
We can also tell by his facial expression as he transmutes that it hurts. Fuhrer Bradley put his swords through Roy’s hands, so of course it’s going to hurt to move them. He moves as little as possible against Father. He fights through that pain because it’s important, and because Roy Mustang never backs down from a fight unless he’s forced to (i.e. Gluttony).
All right, let’s wrap this up. What have we learned from all of this?
Roy makes a show of using his alchemy for tactical purposes (short and long term).
He can use both hands to perform with alchemy and get the same results. We can safely assume that he’s ambidextrous.
When focused solely on completing the mission, he makes his transmutations quick.
He tries to keep his emotions out of combat.
Most of the time he transmutes, he only really moves his wrists, not his arms like other alchemists. He doesn’t need to do more.
With the exception of his fight with Envy, every transmutation he performs is tightly controlled.
Thanks for reading through my post overanalyzing Roy’s alchemy. This was fun to write, and I hope you like it!

💘🍛 I like both of these. What's most important to your oc (of choice but I'm thinking of Maggie), and what their usual dinner looks like <3
Hiiiiiiiii <3
💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?
Maggie has sooo few people she's close with BUT the people she IS close with she is VERY close with, the three main ones would be her brother, Hawke, her Girl Best Friend (come to your own conclusions on this one, they'll never have an actual discussion about it), Jenna, and one of the ghosts that hangs around her, Opal. Hawke she was always fairly close with as a kid, while he never actually believed her when she would talk about the ghosts and their various shenanigans, he was always one of her strongest and most reliable supporters, and would claim to believe her. She knows now that he never actually believed her (She figured that out as a preteen), but she definitely appreciates the fact he was still always there for her and standing up for her when she'd get talked over by others. When she wakes back up after her murder, finding where he lives is one of her first priorities, because she's basically having like a million crises at once and figures he's the person she trusts must to be able to help her.
Paragraph break because I'm going on longer than anticipated WHOOPS. For Jenna, she's close with her for several reasons. The first part is... honestly just a bit of necessity. Maggie's lost and scared and has no idea what's going on, and Jenna's the first person to approach her and is someone willing to try and help her figure out what's going on, during a situation where anyone else would've just forced her to go to a hospital (Which... to be fair Jenna definitely should've suggested they go to some sort of medical help, given that she was passed out in the middle of a field and wakes up talking about being murdered). Outside of necessity, however, she and Jenna just like... basically instantly latch onto each other. They're frankly both a bit obsessive with each other because they both... really don't have anyone else? Once the plot ends and their lives calm down they'll get some other friends and their dynamic will become more sustainable longterm, but in the moment they've only got each other and GODDAMN do they have each other. Jenna's like 90% of the reason Maggie wants to actually take care of herself, because if she's not doing it, Jenna just does it for her, and she doesn't like feeling like a burden, even if Jenna's doing it willingly and without viewing as such. Their bond is so largely based on their willingness to support each other, so. yknow <3
For Opal, she's known Maggie since she was only a few months old! Ghosts took notice of Maggie's ability to see them LONG before Maggie would be learn this was Not normal, AKA, as a several month old baby, she'd track ghosts with her eyes and try and interact with them like any other person, which alerted the ghosts to the fact she could actually see them. This made her essentially a bit of a celebrity/VERY weird and kinda creepy to the ghosts, so word of the Magic Baby Who Can See Dead People spread, and tons of local ghosts would hang around just to see her themselves. Opal ALSO heard of her, and she just generally loves kids, so she went to go see baby Maggie, only to realize that oh man. This is going to be. a tough life for this kid. So she takes it upon herself to watch over her, and chases away other ghosts who bother her so that Maggie doesn't have to spend her entire life being harassed by ghosts. Their dynamic is a bit weird throughout Maggie's life, as Opal tends to be a bit overbearing, and also tends to talk over the living people Maggie's trying to talk/listen to, making it difficult for her to concentrate, but as frustrating as Maggie finds her to be, they still are very close, Opal's someone Maggie can be actually open with, and someone who is always trying to look out for her and protect her any way she can. Their dynamic gets WAY more strained after Maggie's death but this is already a VERY long ramble and that would involve a LOT more so I'll save that for another day
🍛 CURRY AND RICE — what does your oc's typical dinner look like? do they usually eat dinner?
Bad it looks bad.
Okay the actual answer is more nuanced <3 Prior to her murder, Maggie was still living at home (She was only 17 and had JUST graduated highschool, graduating a year early), so her typical dinner was just... whatever her mom made! Nothing too fancy, just pretty generic dinner items. Maggie's never really had much of an appetite, but also stayed up extremely late every night, so typically it'd be eating like half the normal portion of whatever dinner was -> stay up until 2am -> Get hungry and finish off the other half of dinner -> stay up until [god knows how late]. Her favorite meal is probably stew, though while she is an extremely picky eater, of the foods she's okay with she doesn't tend to have really any standout favorites.
Once she wakes back up after her murder and has to care for herself, her dinner is... crackers. As mentioned, she's an extremely picky eater, but she also has no skill in cooking and is also just deeply depressed, so she can't really give the effort to care about it enough to want to eat properly, so she just. doesn't! However, once Jenna starts hanging around more, specifically hanging around for long enough stretches of time to see Maggie's abysmal self care and eating habits, THEN Maggie's typical dinner stops being "crackers" and starts being whatever Jenna makes her. This is typically things like easier to prepare meals like mac n cheese, but Jenna always adds things to them that aren't included to make them nicer, so it's always more than just "box of kraft mac n cheese", its got some added vegetables and meat added in there to make it better!
Once Maggie actually starts trying to learn how to cook herself, her typical dinner consists of one single bite of whatever she tried and promptly failed to make, and then a plate of Whatever Jenna Made Instead. She's trying her best but oh boy. its not great.
#IM SORRY I WENT ON SO LONG.#also Maggie's favorite meal AFTER the plot is probably a nice salad#low effort + REALLY hard for her to fuck up + tastes good#as for Maggies dynamic with Opal post-murder... its. its something. its bad </3#The start of Maggie's full blown breakdown is literally her snapping and tearing into Opal and essentially blaming her for her murder#This is. bad. Opal has already felt INSANELY guilty all of this time- she would leave Maggie alone at night-#-to try and help with Maggies insomnia by not keeping her up#-so she ABSOLUTELY feels responsible in part for Maggie's murder- that she could've been there and she could've warned Maggie-#-about the intruder. But like. It's not her fault. How could she have known? Maggie knows its not her fault#but she's extremely freaked out at that point and is having an intense breakdown and is lashing out at Opal because she just needs SOMEONE-#-to blame. She's dying and she doesnt know why and she needs to find someone to blame for it#anyways maggie please apologize to your ghost mom. (she does. she also gets to- for the first and only time- physically hold her hand)#(ghosts can physically interact with each other- and Maggies growing wounds are essentially her soul physically splitting-#-so its essentially this bittersweet moment of like. for the first time- shes able to reach out and hold Opals hand.#and its only because shes dying)#BUT THEN SHE DOESNT DIE. VITALLY IMPORTANT#my OCs#maggie

one of the thing thats just casually glossed over in aitsf is that date was waiting all night by mizuki's bed side. like?
#duri vs the eyeball game#i could never understand why the game treated mizuki.... the way it did in the right branch#mizuki shouldve been actively involved in all of the routes at least in date's internal monologue#like i wonder where mizuki is or if she has eaten#jesus the reason date even knows to warn iris is bc he sees 'iris' in mizuki's route#and yet she isnt even an active assistant at any point in the right branch? like!#like idk i think the major reason why the right branch feels the way it does to me is bc most of the time date is just like#getting yanked around#instead of doing any actual investigation#all why neglecting mizuki#like thats not who he is. he no matter what route he did wait by mizuki's bedside#he did give her an adorabbit it is a fact in every route#he did 'teach' her to fight back#he did make her stew and he did learn cooking for her and he did make sure his meal were nutricious#like it doesnt make sense to have him doing all of that and not have mizuki be an active portion of the right branch#even if she is not the focus of that branch she Is the focus she is a vital part of date's life#but well. fucking whatever. i guess.
