Australia Wants To Attract the World’s Best? Make It Easier to Migrate
A few years ago, an Indian photographer friend living in Malaysia was flying to Fiji on assignment. He opted to fly through Sydney with a five-hour stopover, enough time, he reckoned, to get the train in to Circular Quay and drink a cold beer at the Opera Bar while marvelling at the Harbour Bridge.
But he never even got close, as he was prevented from even boarding his flight. He found out, at the airport desk in Kuala Lumpur, that his Indian passport meant he needed a visa simply to transit through Sydney. Forget the Quay, he needed the visa just to disembark the plane at the airport.
The experience didn’t just set his project back a few days and disadvantage the rest of the crew on the assignment, it left a seriously sour taste in the mouth of exactly the kind of globally well-connected professional that Australia should be trying to woo. When I asked other friends, I found it a common experience. Another Indian friend had been barred from boarding the flight to go to her own wedding in Auckland.
As far as case studies go, I admit that these ones aren’t particularly egregious, not when compared to some of the more difficult issues faced by those trying to enter Australia to work and set up their lives anew. But it’s an experience that shines a blinding light on a couple of things.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the strict border controls that came with it, Australia right now has more jobs than it has a ready pool of skilled and available people to fill them. The government has been working to clear the visa backlog – down to 775,000, down from a million, it says, and this, along with the expansion of the Pacific worker scheme, shows a commitment to resolving the issue.
So why is it still so hard to get permanency?
Visa seekers speak of waiting five or six years, sometimes longer, to gain permanent residency in Australia. This makes it hard to live a normal life. I have a permanent visa-seeking friend right now trying to get to the United States for a business trip: the US wants a commitment from Australia that she will return here, but Australia is yet to grant her the right to stay. It’s properly a scene from Utopia.
People also speak of extremely expensive, long-winded and fraught quests to gain parent visas. Home Affairs says the waiting time for the parent visa is currently at least 74 months; and a migration agency estimated the total cost at more than $43,000. I’ve heard anecdotally of some spending closer to $100,000.

Australia has, at least since the Tampa standoff in 2001, used its visa program to signal its values. Business visas take precedence, signalling Australia’s dominant value of economic growth. Family visas have always – at least since I started taking notice, when I started at my first reporting job at SBS – been a category that a sceptical public (and consequently, government) has considered to be an unnecessary burden, a fast-track to overstaying and Medicare fraud. Australia requires passport holders from undesirable countries to submit to expensive and sometimes fraught visitor visa processes, even simply for an airport stopover.

Tourist visa for Australia from India price.
Tumblr media
Australia is arguably one of the most popular dream destinations for many travellers here in India. Still, before getting swept away planning beach days in Bondi or safaris of wildlife in the Outback, there is truly an essential first step that involves understanding the cost required to attain an Australian tourist visa. This article describes in detail the important things to know regarding tourist visa fees, additional charges, and factors impacting the overall cost of your Australian adventure. That's why it is necessary to ensure that the budget can be considered for travelling fun and the requirements of a visa all at once.
Understanding the Basic Australia Tourist Visa Fees for Indians
Well, first things first, you'll want the standard Visitor Visa, which is called Subclass 600. This will permit you to visit for a few months, and here is its cost:
Standard Visa Fee: AUD $195 (approximately INR 10,800)
The base price does have some variation regarding exchange rates, but presently it is approximately 10,800 INR for Indian tourists. The fee covers processing for one tourist visa application.
Additional Fees You Should Consider
Visa Center Service Charges
If applying via a visa application centre, you will also need to pay service charges. The service fee ranges from INR 1,000-2,000, depending upon the centre and the type of service chosen.
 Consultancy Fees
Visa consultancies charge another fee for professional services, depending on the level of service. Optional, but could be an extra investment to ensure everything works smoothly for your application process.
How Long Does the Visa Last?
Most of the tourist visas issued to travel to Australia are for 3, 6, or 12 months. The period of your visa, in most instances, does not affect the cost, as all these periods are covered by AUD $195. The only additional requirements may include a medical examination for longer stays, which may add to the costs.
Important Tips to Control Visa Costs
Apply Early: Visa fees are not refundable, so give yourself sufficient time not to rush through the process. Early application means less stress about missed flights or delayed trips.
Always have some leeway in your budget for contingencies that may come up in the process, especially for things like biometrics or medical examinations when one intends to stay longer in Australia.
Exchange rates are your friends: Since the fees are in AUD, a great exchange rate could save some bucks; therefore, keep an eye on the best rates to get the most for your INR.
Get Assistance If Need Be: Sometimes the criteria for a Visa become overly complicated, and if the application gets denied, then that just means starting from scratch with extra fees. It would make better sense to consult a visa professional while applying whenever one isn't sure about something.

Australia Plans Limits on International Students
Tumblr media
Australia says it will impose limits on the number of international students coming into the country to ease stress on housing and to reduce immigration.
The government in Canberra has said that international education programs, under which foreign students come to study in Australia, were fertile ground for immigration and visa fraud.
In 2023, official figures show that 787,000 international students studied in Australia, exceeding levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canberra government plans to cap the number of overseas students to ease stress on rental accommodation and to curb levels of immigration.
Senior government ministers have said caps for education would be part of a broader plan to manage migration, increase the availability of housing and to address skills shortages in the economy.
However, the university sector has insisted the proposals would damage Australia's global reputation as a welcoming, safe and world-class destination for students from other countries.
Education has been one of Australia’s most lucrative exports, but the left-leaning government in Canberra has said the international education sector, which includes many smaller private English language colleges, vocational and training institutions as well as larger universities, has been used as a way for unskilled migrants to stay in Australia.
Michael Wesley, the deputy vice chancellor at the University of Melbourne, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Tuesday that he hopes the government will target unscrupulous education providers.
Tumblr media
“We welcome the crackdown on non-genuine education providers, which provide a backdoor into permanent residency for people who are not genuine students," Wesley said. "We are confident that all of our international students are genuine students and, so, we would hope that the impact of these visa caps will be at the non-genuine end of the education sector.”
Rental accommodation in many of Australia’s larger cities is often expensive and in short supply.
Analysts have said that surging prices are the result of years of underinvestment in affordable housing.
Education institutions would be required to build accommodations for their students if they wanted to exceed limits of the caps. Specific quotas for international students have not yet been made public.
The government in Canberra said it will change Australia’s Education Services for Overseas Students Act to give the education minister the authority to set limits on student enrolments for each education establishment, including specific courses or locations.
The majority of overseas students in Australia come from five countries: China, India, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam, according to government data. They contribute billions of dollars to the Australian economy.

Sunsets and footballers (Part 20)
Lucy Bronze x Reader (20)
Masterlist (other parts here)
YFN had just received an email from the company she now worked for, Lumos. She tried to research the company and the first thing that popped up was a popular charity, followed by several other companies sharing the same name. Eventually she found her company which had nothing beyond a basic internet site and new social media accounts, so she knew they were being honest when they said they were brand new and starting up.
The salary they’d offered her was already high, with the promise of increase based on performance, both hers and Lumos’. The amount of money they were putting into the business and expenses were also much higher than she expected. Someone really wanted this to work.
She looked over at Lucy who was making her own sandcastles and smiled. Once the email had come through, Lucy had insisted she read it and took her time to mull it over. YFN loved that she was doing anything she could to let her make a future in the country, and especially around her profession. That was her Lucy. Always three steps ahead.
She took her phone out to film a little snippet of her as she made her giant sandcastle. She couldn’t help the smile on her face looking at how happy she was. Lucy’s big kid was shining through. She looked up and saw YFN filming her and grinned, gesturing to her sandcastle as if to show it off. YFN ended the video and put it away, looking at Lucy sitting in the sand, a leg either side of her creation. She was wearing black shorts, her whole body tanned from Spain, abs shining with the sunscreen YFN put on her, regardless of the clouds. Her heart felt full just watching her.
“Admiring the view?” Lucy grinned.
YFN felt her face reddening, though she didn’t know why. She wasn’t ashamed to look. She nodded, pressing her lips together to hide a cheeky smile.
“Can you send me that video, little one?”
“Yes ma’am.”
She sent the video and went back to the email on her laptop. The email was promising, and she found herself excited at everything she read.
Her phone rang and she looked at the number, Lumos. She answered it, putting it on speaker, knowing Lucy would be interested.
“YFN speaking.”
“Hi YFN, it’s Joe, how are you?” She sounded lovely, like a mum.
“Hi Joe, lovely to hear from you again. I’m great, just at the beach soaking in all of the sunshine the UK has to offer.”
She laughed. “I dare say it’s nothing compared to what you’re used to in Australia. I hope I haven’t caught you at a bad time.”
“No, not at all. I was expecting this today, I’m free to chat.” She smiled at Lucy who gave her a supportive thumbs up.
“Excellent. Okay, well I thought we’d just go through the basics of what we’re hoping to accomplish as a company, our goals and along those lines. If you have the email open, we’ll just run through it together. Also, how’s the work Visa coming along?”
“Perfect, I have it open now. I’ve also spoken to my Visa agent and he’s confident they’ll have it approved by tonight. They’re happy with the contract and 6-month minimum guarantee that you’ve sent through.”
“Outstanding, that’s what we want to hear! Just send that through as soon as you receive it, or if you need any other information. Fingers crossed! Okay, let’s get started. So firstly, as you know, I’ve wanted to start this company for quite a period of time. I have a lot of friends and acquaintances in and around the industry, and we’re not seeing the movement in female football that we’ve wanted, so Lumos is a plan to change that. Now, the World Cup has been brilliant for progress, and we plan to latch onto that and keep the momentum building. Over the past year and especially the past few months, I and my friends in the industry have put our feelers out, gotten some feedback and have established interest by a lot of the players. Now, I understand it will start slow, but we’re willing to put the work in and definitely also put the funding into it.”
Lucy looked impressed, nodding as she was talking.
“That sounds fantastic, Joe..”
“I’m glad you agree! To be quite honest with you, YFN, you’ve been the lynchpin I’ve been looking for. I’ve been looking for someone with your experience and after reading your columns and seeing the interviews you’ve conducted, I’m beyond impressed. The research you put into your work, and the way you speak and ask questions to your interviewee’s are smart, and incredibly respectful. I can see that’s important to you, and it’s very important to me. We shouldn’t be asking the same boring questions, or we’ll get the same media trained answers.”
“Oh I completely agree. I was a bit worried at first that this job would encourage me to ask those simple and sometimes far too personal questions, so I’m really happy to hear you say that because people don’t realise that we can go beyond the norm of interviewing, and still remain just like that. Respectful. Not only that, but players will be more willing to open up, accept interviews, and request us if they’re comfortable around us. They’ll also want to use us to get their messages across and I know that if we do this right, the momentum will build and more players will be using us to fulfil their media duties.”
“Outstanding, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear! We’re so, so lucky that you happened to meet Katie so she could recommend you to us. We’ve been looking for you for quite a while.”
YFN was a little embarrassed, she didn’t know how to accept compliments and blushed. Lucy reached over and squeezed her leg in support. “Thanks Joe, that’s lovely to hear. I hope I can live up to your expectations, and I’m excited to get started! It’s a blank slate which means so much opportunity for the company.”
“100% agree. Any chance you’ve found our website and social media accounts?”
“I did just before you called..”
Joe laughed again. “Of course, you have. Straight into work! Excellent. We’re going to get along so well, I already know it. Our IT guy is Noel, and his contact details are in the email. Right now I’ve asked him to make the accounts all bare minimum, as I imagine you’ll want to create a theme to follow..”
“Yes! Absolutely, so I plan on organising a meeting with the whole team for Monday, I just wanted to make sure you were happy with that first..”
“Yes, please! And just for the future, this is your team, your baby. Anything involving the creation of this, meetings, team logistics, etc, all of that is yours. Obviously I’ll still like to be kept up to date with the progress and the plans, but to be completely fair with you, YFN, I run several businesses so I’m quite busy. This company is still in its start-up stages, so I’ll have much more time for it, and I do have a soft spot, this is always going to be one of my priorities, however I just wanted to make sure we’re on the same page with this.”
“That’s perfect, I’ll send you through weekly updates and expenses, planning, coverage and everything we change or create along the way. I appreciate the honesty and the communication also, I think until we establish that solid footing, you and I will have to be in a lot of contact to ensure we’re achieving the expected goals, and keeping everything in budget.”
“You don’t know how much this is music to my ears.”
YFN laughed, feeling positive and happy with the plan thus-far. Joe seemed perfect, offering her everything and having the blind faith in her to start up the business almost from the ground, up. “I think we’re starting at a good time, though. We’re catching the start of the seasons, so it gives us time to iron out any issues before the finals for both the WSL and the Conti Cup. A good timeline will be for us to have full coverage by Round 5 on the Conti Cup, and January for WSL, covering both through to the Final. Then we should be fully prepped and running smoothly for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.”
“That’s a very respectable timeline and exactly my thoughts. January will be perfect if we can have full coverage by then.”
“I think it’s achievable, I’ll have a better idea after I research a bit more and talk to the team. I’m sure everyone’s keen to get started! Also, it’ll be quite a heavy work period as we start up, and then when we finally start to get footing, we’ll be expanding to make sure we have the people to cover all games and the email also says you’re hoping for international team and coverage of the other leagues in Europe?”
“Yes,” Joe sounded a litte sheepish. “I know, I know, it’s quite a high expectation, but we’ll get there eventually. Let’s start with the WSL and Continental Cup. Definitely want to be all over the UEFA Women’s Champions League, that’s the first major goal. From there, you and I can talk about expanding to cover Tier 2. Then, depending on the timeline, we want to cover Tier 3 and Tier 4 so we can encourage grassroots and young girls upcoming through the leagues. Then we want Liga F, Serie A, Feminine, etc, also following the national teams, NWSL in the US, A-Leagues in Australia and onwards.”
“Very large goals! That’s great, a lot to look forward to and to aim for. We’ll make sure to split the goals up to feel more achievable for the team, but I think if they know the long-term goal, it’ll make everyone determined and ready to settle down into the job.”
“That’s exactly what we want. The team building and team trust in each other is vital to make this business a success. Anything you need, let me know and we’ll work through it together, that includes extra positions or professionals. I imagine a recruiter may become useful if you become inundated with the logistics.”
YFN nodded, even though she couldn’t see her. She was taking notes eagerly, excited by the conversation as she responded, a little distracted as she typed. “I’ll definitely let you know if we need anything to help us expand..”
“I heard you’re meeting some of the players, also?”
YFN stopped typing and tilted her head. Lucy groaned. She looked over at Lucy who had a frown on her face, gesturing to the phone. “Um… Joe I have Lucy close by who wants to say something I think?”
Joe was aware that YFN was dating Lucy. YFN had made sure she’d told Joe, fearing a conflict of interest, especially with the need to visit Spain. Joe had had the opposite reaction. She thought it was great that YFN was so involved in the industry, knowing that dating Lucy made her closer with the inner circle of football than just being part of a media group. As for Spain, she’d encouraged her to go, offering to pay for flights and knowing that the more she was involved with Barcelona, the easier it would be to expand into Liga F and onwards. She was particularly interested in Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati as they had so much influence in the sport. Joe’s ambition was multi-faceted, but positive on all fronts. She wanted to encourage the young female footballers of tomorrow, give women strong rolemodels to idolise, and to bring much needed attention to all of women’s football in general, all around the world. Popular footballers like Lucy, Alexia, Aitana, could help expedite their growth and influence.
“Of course! I assumed she was there with you and then Lucy’s post confirmed it.” She laughed.
Lucy’s post? She looked at a now cheeky looking Lucy as she passed her the phone and stole Lucy’s to check on said “post”. She’d posted the video of her building sandcastles on the beach and grinning at the camera, but more importantly, she’d posted a selfie Lucy had taken of the two of them, YFN sat in-between her legs and being pulled back by Lucy who was kissing her cheek as she smiled. Her mouth dropped open. Hard launch. She looked at the caption.
“Happy place with my happy little Australian” *red heart*
She’d tagged her and YFN looked at the phone in Lucy’s hand, unsure how it hadn’t blown up from all of the notifications it must have had. Lucy winked at her as she moved next to her, resting her hand on her thigh and stroking her thumb there.
“Hey Joe, it’s Lucy.. funny you should mention that, I actually hadn’t told YFN that just yet..”
“Hi Lucy… oh, I’m sorry! I’d heard a few little whispers from a few friends..”
Lucy laughed. “That’s okay, she had to find out eventually.” She looked at YFN who looked curiously at her gorgeously tanned athlete. She couldn’t help reaching out and playing with a few strands of Lucy’s hair that were wildly playing in the wind. “I might as well tell you both.. YFN said a while ago that one of the first things she’d want to do is to have a get-together with a few players to ask them what they want, their likes and dislikes and to start building those relationships.” YFN’s fingers stroked down the side of Lucy’s face from around her temple, down to her jaw as she watched her speak. Lucy leant into her as she did. “So a few of the girls and I made a few phone calls to get some players together for dinner tonight.”
YFN’s fingers paused on her jaw, her eyes softening and heart filling. How did she get so lucky?
“That’s fantastic! A very strong start to everything! Relationship building is the most important thing for us, we want to build and maintain those special relationships with all of the players, so this dinner tonight is going to be the perfect start for that. I speak for our whole company when I say a big thank you to you, Lucy. This is just… beyond the start I was expecting.”
“You’re welcome, and to be fair, I know a lot of the players are excited for this. As you said, word has been spreading for a while now and heating up in the last few months so we’re all excited to see this come to life. The girls I’ve spoken to have been so under represented and misrepresented for so long that they’re excited for this to happen. YFN’s going to have a lot of work, but I know she’s going be the most amazing asset for you and create magic, like she does with everything else.”
YFN’s hand dropped and she looked at Lucy with an embarrassed but thankful expression. Lucy touched that little dimple, her eyes unable to leave it. She handed the phone back to YFN who was almost crying. So much work. She wondered how busy she would be in 13 days when she needed to head to Spain. Joe was aware of it, of course, and immediately approved, reminding her that she didn’t need her permission.
They spoke for a little while longer, talking about the email and the team members they had. The call ended and YFN folded up her little note taking book, pulling the band over it. Lucy’s mouth on hers was surprising, but not unwelcome. She kissed back eagerly, tilting her head and their tongues meeting. It grew a little bit more desperate as their hands tangled in each other’s hair, and Lucy pulled her on top, straddling her in a sitting position. YFN groaned into her mouth at the feel of Lucy’s body against hers. Then her phone rang again.
She jumped, assuming it was Joe calling back and looked at the phone.
“Nan calling. Baby bro calling.”
“Oh shit, Joe really distracted me.” She answered the phone on loudspeaker, sliding off of Lucy, noticing her confused expression. “Hi Nan, hey bro.”
Lucy understood and settled herself behind YFN, legs either side of her and pulled her back to lean on her body. She pulled a blanket around them.
“Hello!”
“Hey sis.”
They changed to Facetime and it was impossible for them to not see Lucy. YFN’s nan adjusted her glasses to better see and her brother looked surprised and unbelieving.
“Oh shit, you weren’t joking.” He choked.
Lucy laughed. “Hi! It’s nice to finally meet you both. I’ve heard so much about you two.”
“Oh, YFN, she’s stunning.” Her nan said, making her choke out a little of the water she was sipping. Lucy and her brother laughed as she coughed the water out of her lungs.
“It’s not just about looks, nan!”
“No, but it certainly helps, doesn’t it?” She laughed.
YFN could feel Lucy’s whole body vibrating as she laughed behind her. She rolled her eyes knowing that Lucy loved compliments.
“Oh and I saw the photos online, very nice!”
Her nan was far past retired, she was a pensioner who spent most of her time playing games on the iPad YFN had bought her, and looking through Instagram and Facebook she’d installed on there for her. She had no idea how to use them and only had a few friends and followers, but that’s all she needed. After that, Lucy took out her phone and followed them both, making sure it was okay first and warning them about random follows that would ultimately pop up.
They spoke for a while, Lucy immediately loved by both, of course. Everybody loved Lucy. Lucy and her brother clicked surprisingly well, perhaps even better than YFN did with him, though she suspected a part of it was his idolisation of athletes and Lucy was nothing if not an athlete. She felt Lucy’s abs against her back, her strong biceps cradled around her own arms and she held her and laughed with her family like this wasn’t the first time they’d all spoken. God, that woman.
By the end of the phone call, Lucy had already managed to convince them both to come over and watch a game, offering to pay for their flights and accommodation. YFN made a mental note to argue with her about that later, or pay before Lucy could. Somehow she’d even convinced her nan who had always said she was too old for flying, Lucy managing to sweet talk her about first class and how much room and food you got. She was excited at the prospect of seeing them both. She’d seen her nan only a few weeks before, but the distance was cruel. Also, she hadn’t seen her brother in 8 months as he was living in Japan, exploring and doing god knows what.
They ended the phone call after a good period, both agreeing to come and watch England play at some point in the near future. She was excited at the thought of seeing her family soon and wriggled back into Lucy to show her happiness.
When the call disappeared from the screen, she saw the notifications and groaned nervously. She opened the post.

She didn’t finish reading the notifications before she cleared them and put her phone away. She’d look later. Right now, she was with Lucy, and she was more than aware that she only had her for one more day. Lucy hummed her approval and kissed her temple.
“Busy third date, hm?”
“Cute lunch, majestic sandcastle, exciting work call, successful first meeting with my family… I’d call that a brilliant third date.”
Lucy nodded against her. “It’s getting late, little one. We need to go; I want us to get unpacked and showered before we go out for dinner.”
“Okay…”
“What’s on your mind? I can hear you thinking.” Lucy nuzzled behind her ear.
“I was just thinking about how I need to say goodbye to you in a day..”
“Don’t think about that.” She whispered. “Let’s enjoy it.”
“I am. My heart is starting to feel sad already though..” She turned slightly to look at Lucy. “Also, just out of curiosity, are we going to not have sex tonight, or just be quiet so Jordan doesn’t hear us?”
Lucy’s head fell back as she laughed. It was one of YFN’s favourite sounds. “Oh, we’re having sex tonight. As for the noise… I’m going to make sure you’re thinking about it for the next 13 days so… good luck staying quiet.”

Hi! I was on the 911 wiki and trying to understand the difference between when an actor is labeled a guest star versus a recurring character. Does it just have to do with the initial contract they’re offered for the season? I thought it was about the number of episodes, but since John Harlan Kim was recurring in s4 but Anirudh was labeled as guest in s5 despite appearing in all but 2 episodes I was confused. Thanks!
I KNOW I have a breakdown of these labels somewhere on this blog but I can't find it so:
Main/Regular is someone who is contracted to be a lead on the show. This doesn't mean they are in every episode of the season though.
Current mains are: Angela, Peter, Jennifer, Aisha, Kenny, Ryan, Oliver, Gavin
Previous mains are: Connie, Corinne, Marcanthonee, Rockmond, John*
*For only Season 4, John was actually a series regular. It's believed, but not confirmed, to have been because of visa + pandemic reasons since he's from Australia.
Recurring is someone who comes back for multiple episodes and is planned to.
Some examples are: Anirudh, Arielle, Lou, Bryan, Debra
Guest is someone who is in one episode (or has a small return).
An example of the returning guest cast is like the guys from the cement microwave & merry-go-round calls. They returned, but it was a one-off and not in a major capacity.
This is a rather general breakdown. There's some more technical terms. Technically, there's levels below guest cast and such. If you want the deep dive, here's a resource.

If anyone's curious about how plan "Get Me The Fuck Out Of Here" is going: I've narrowed the possible countries down to Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, or Norway.
All of them are pretty LGBTQ friendly, from what I can tell, and have protections in place for women's rights; they're all very beautiful places to live, and they'd each give me an opportunity to travel more; I like that Ireland, Switzerland, and Norway have cooler climates, but Australia's beaches make up for the heat; housing prices are definitely more reasonable in these countries than in the US; The houses are also a more reasonable size than in the US, since I don't want a gigantic house; there'd be plenty of places to walk any dogs I adopt, since I plan on having pets, and I think my cat would adjust well; and more.
Best of all, none of these countries are the US <3
I'm mainly just looking at the type of visa I'd need, what I'd need to qualify for citizenship, how to get a mortgage for a home overseas, what homes are up for sale and how much they are, remote accounting jobs that'd work for my situation, and other things. So, if anyone has ever moved to another country before and advice for me, I'd be grateful for it. I still have a couple years before I finish my degree and am able to move, but it's important for me to have a plan so that I can prepare and save accordingly.
I'm just so frustrated that I have to move to another country just to feel safe, though. It's not like I never wanted to travel the world or move abroad, I did, but this isn't how I wanted it to go. I wanted to graduate, get a job, settle down for a few years in the US, save up the money little by little while I live my life, and eventually move to another country once I'm comfortable with living on my own.
It was supposed to be a happy, exciting, experience.
Now, though, I just feel sad and scared because I don't feel safe in what's supposed to be my home! I want to be proud of my country, I want to be able to live here for a few years in peace while I figure my life out, I want to be able to move abroad and not be embarrassed to say that I'm from the US---but I just can't!
I'm just so tired of having to prove my humanity to people, having to worry about having my rights stripped from me, having to deal with so many ignorant morons 24/7; I just want to be able to live my life in peace, without having to constantly be on guard or hide who I am because it's not safe for me to be myself. It just sucks that this is what my home has become, because people would rather be bigoted and hateful than focus on their own lives and be kind. I hate it.
On the bright side, though, I might actually be able to own a nice home abroad---and I think I'd have fun exploring whatever city or town I end up in, getting to know the people and the culture and all that. Plus, hopefully I'll have better luck making friends somewhere else, since it's pretty hard to here.
Wish me luck friends, I'm working on it <3

[ENG SUB] Bojan Cvjetićanin on Val 202 (13.11.2024)

Transcript below the cut 👇
Host: It's 22 minutes till eight or 46 and a half hours till the release of Joker Out's new, third album, and on Monday I caught up with Bojan Cvjetićanin, the band's singer. And the story of Joker Out before the third album can be divided into the time before and after Eurovision, because after that final performance, things started happening really quickly.
Bojan: I mean, before Eurovision, our aspirations were to try breaking into the Balkans, in whichever form it would be, we didn't dare think much about going abroad. When our duet with Elvis Costello happened, we started thinking in that direction, that maybe we could go for, for example, English speaking markets or not Slovenian or Balkan ones. But there were no real steps made in that direction, and now our plans absolutely involve more than just Slovenia and the Balkans, but it all has to be part of one story, Europe is now definitely part of the regular repertoire, I'd say. Last year, or this year, we had three offers for a small tour across Australia, which we, unfortunately, couldn't accept, because we fortunately wanted to finish this album. We had a concert in New York booked, but we had to cancel it because we couldn't get work visas fast enough, because everything happened very ad hoc. So, there were offers, there are options, I believe that honestly, I don't think we have any sort of megalomania or an abnormal wish for success or hunger. We just want to keep making music that we like and play it to the people who like it, the future will show how far it reaches, but I don't want to force anything.
Bojan from Joker Out on Val 202, 'Souvenir Pop', the third album, will be released to the people on Friday early in the morning, and is, after the initial listen, a rollercoaster of genres, emotions and languages.
I saw now, during the creation of this album, that it can really turn us around, take us in a wholly other direction than the one planned, and it was quite a tumultuous experience of creating this album, so I'm not worried that emotions and ideas for the fourth one would be running low, the only thing I'm scared of is this rollercoaster, how quick it can spin and how many languages we intend to add and such.
How much privacy is in the songs we've not heard yet?
A lot, in some songs there's a lot of contemplation about privacies that were stolen from some people. There's a lot... Yeah, I'd say quite a lot, the album is very introspective in general.
'Souvenir Pop' out on Friday morning, that was Bojan Cvjetićanin, singer of the band Joker Out, and the album will include 'Stephanie'.

Re your post and emigrating, depending on advanced degrees in what, Australia might be an option. There are certain jobs they have on their list re job shortages, that was how I was able to get residency here (I moved for a job and was on a work visa, but then was able to get residency becauseI had a PhD in an in-demand area). Esp if ag or medicine, but there's other fields that are on the list, and being from an English-speaking country does make some of the process easier too. For what it's worth I really like it down here, I just became an Aussie citizen in fact. The work culture is way more chill than the USA and the healthcare system is pretty good, there are things I miss from the USA but I really do love it here. I'm sorry you're in this position, but let me know if there's anything I can do to help? Happy to help if I can.
Good to know! We're currently aiming for Canada because my husband's company has other people who work there and that might give us an in, but backup plans (and backup plans for backup plans) are good.

Part 1 | Part 7
Part 8
Max stood in the kitchen, sipping a red bull and being grilled by his mother and sister. They had come over, as he promised Daniel they would, to celebrate his birthday. So… Max didn’t exactly tell them about Daniel, just that he had a friend staying with him for a little, while they worked out some visa issues.
Sophie and Vic had accepted that easily because they had no reason to not believe. They only realized something was….odd when they’d actually come over. Daniel was in Max’s clothes, it was clear to see. And he looked very cozy and comfortable in the space and the cats were very attached to him.
So after the initial greeting and introductions where Daniel gushed to Sophie how wonderful her son was (absolutely not helping), Daniel had happily agreed to keep an eye on Luka and Lio for a quick sec. That was how Max ended up in the kitchen being bombarded with accusations of hiding his boyfriend.
Daniel wasn’t his boyfriend, Max didn’t get why everyone thought that.
Not that he didn’t think that would, maybe, be nice. But that's a different thing altogether.
He looks across the room to Daniel who is talking animatedly with Lio while Luka stroked Jimmy’s fur. Sassy laid comfortably in Daniel’s lap as if that was her home. Truth be told, it kinda was. She had taken to Daniel faster and more completely than she’d ever taken to Max and maybe he could admit he was a little jealous of that.
It was like she was protecting Daniel. There had been a few times that he’d seen her pad across the apartment and waited for him, as if leading Daniel to what he needed. She’d also gotten his attention once when it looked like he was going to squeeze his finger in a door. He’d crooned to her after about how amazing she was and they spent the afternoon curled up in a beam of sunlight together.
Sassy barely allowed Max to hold her sometimes, and she sure as shit didn’t want to cuddle. He’d joke and say she was a strong independent cat that didn’t need an owner. So this was completely new territory for him.
So yes, maybe Max was a little jealous of Daniel and Sassy’s relationship. Just a little. A smidge. A tad.
“No we aren’t together. Daniel is just a magical friend who needed some help getting home.” Max muttered around his can. Of course Sophie and Vic didn’t buy it.
“Magical friend?” Vic’s deadpan tone only got more cutting with motherhood.
“Yes. He’s magical adept or whatever google calls it.”
Sophie squinted her eyes at him before looking at Daniel again who was now gushing over something Lio was showing him. Their heads were close together as they chattered excitedly. Luka looked on with Jimmy.
“What do you mean?” Sophie asked. She, of course, knew about magical people. But she’d never met one. Vic was flabbergasted.
“He speaks to animals and his tattoos move.”
“Is that why Sassy is curled up on him like–” Vic cut in
“Yep” Max confirmed.
“So was the visa thing a lie?” Sophie asked.
“No, it is the weirdest thing. He’s from Australia and came over on a plane…but he doesn’t have a passport or anything. So I’ve been talking with his sister about figuring it out.”
“Is his sister magical too?” Vic again.
“I dunno.” Max shrugged, he was watching Daniel. He was more sedate than usual, very different to when he first met Lando, Charles, Alex and Lily. it seemed as if he was maybe trying to keep himself in check. Daniel looked up and caught him staring, he smiled sweetly at Max, not at all like the face cracking grins Max was used to, then looked back to the boys.
It wasn’t bad, just unexpected.
Suddenly, Max remembered Daniel’s reaction to finding out that Max had cancelled his birthday plans and wondered if maybe Daniel was trying to make a good impression.
“He’s very worried that you don’t like him.” Max mumbled, not looking when both women’s eyes snapped back to him. “He was…upset that I cancelled our plans and blamed himself, I don’t of course, but he was really sad. So he wants to make a good impression so you don’t hate him, I think.”
Well that won’t do, Sophie and Vic shook their heads as if physically denouncing the idea. They each grabbed a drink and filtered back to the living room to join whatever activity Daniel and the boys were doing. Daniel offered them a tentative smile.
“I hope you don’t mind, we’ve been painting.” Daniel said softly and Max’s chest clenched at how achingly earnest it was. The boys picked up their artwork to show off happily.
“Why would we mind?” Sophie found herself asking, taking Luka’s painting– the race car was blue like his uncle’s and surrounded by trophies.
“Uhm,” Daniel bit his lip and looked to Max as if checking if it was ok. Max smiled at him encouragingly. “Sassy said you didn’t like the smell of the paint last time Luka used them. It made you sick.”
Vic’s eyes widened and she looked over at her brother as if for confirmation. Max held his hands up in a ‘it wasn’t me motion’ because he didn’t tell Daniel that the paints made Vic sick when she was pregnant with Lio. Sassy did.

Commentator Candace Owens has been blocked from entering Australia ahead of a planned speaking tour.
Australia's Minister of Home Affairs, Tony Burke, rejected Owens' visa application, his office confirmed to Newsweek.
"From downplaying the impact of the Holocaust with comments about [Nazi doctor Josef Mengele] through to claims that Muslims started slavery, Candace Owens has the capacity to incite discord in almost every direction," Burke said in a statement.
"Australia's national interest is best served when Candace Owens is somewhere else."
Owens has long stoked controversy with inflammatory claims about Jewish, Muslim and transgender people. In July, she sparked a backlash after saying that accounts of the Nazi medical experiments conducted on twins by Mengele in concentration camps sound "completely absurd" and like "bizarre propaganda."
Owens has not publicly commented on being barred from entering Australia. She has been contacted for comment via an email sent through the website for Blexit, a grassroots conservative movement she co-founded.
The Anti-Defamation Commission, a pro-Jewish group that pushed to bar Owens from Australia, welcomed Burke's decision to reject her visa application.
"This is a victory for truth, for decency, and for the millions of Jewish souls and millions of others whose memory she so shamelessly desecrated," the group's chairman Dvir Abramovich said in a statement provided to Newsweek.
"The decision by the government to bar Owens sends a resounding message: Australia has no place for those who mock the suffering of genocide survivors and insult the memories of the 6 million Jews who perished. This is a line in the sand."
The Anti-Defamation League says Owens has "come to espouse explicitly antisemitic, anti-Zionist and anti-Israel views," while LGBQT+ advocacy organization GLAAD has listed several occasions when Owens has expressed allegedly transphobic views on social media.
Owens left The Daily Wire, a right-wing website, earlier this year amid reported tensions with editor emeritus Ben Shapiro over their opposing points of view on Israel's war in Gaza.
She has been increasingly critical of Israel, writing on X in November last year that "no government anywhere has a right to commit a genocide, ever. There is no justification for a genocide. I can't believe this even needs to be said or is even considered the least bit controversial to state." Israel has denied accusations of genocide.
Her speaking tour in Australia was set to kick off in Melbourne on November 17, with tickers ranging from $95 for reserved seating to $1,500 for a VIP package that included a pre-event dinner and a meet-and-greet with Owens. The tour also included stops in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, and Auckland in New Zealand.
"Join us for an electrifying evening with Candace Owens, the outspoken and fearless American conservative social commentator, author, activist, and YouTube sensation," read a description of the show on ticketing website Ticketek.
"Known for her controversial takes and unwavering stance, Candace is set to light up stages across Australia and New Zealand with her bold and unfiltered perspectives.... this is your opportunity to experience firsthand the intellect and fearlessness that has captivated millions around the globe."
Update 10/28/24, 4:50 a.m ET: This article has been updated with a statement from Tony Burke's office and the Anti-Defamation Commission.

My US tourist visa got approved!!!
After graduating in 2018, all I ever thought was becoming a pharmacist in the US. I studied the process and made sure I understood what I needed. The very reason why I pursued the Doctor of Pharmacy program is because they required foreign graduates to have this degree before we are able to take the equivalency exam. After getting the PharmD degree, one big obstacle I had to face was getting a tourist visa because exams are only held in the US, even the English exam. I read testimonies from different people online and I lost hope because I didn't have strong ties to the Philippines back then. I thought it was going to be an impossible journey to consider. Which is why I researched more about Australia instead.
Initially, I planned to just make Australia my stepping stone before I eventually continue my plans to move to the US as a pharmacist. However, after getting exhausted after a year of internship, I decided that it was gonna be the last academic exam I'm gonna take. I was so done with endless studying just to pass an exam. My main priority is to make money and save up for my future, which I know I am capable of doing now in Australia. I don't want to go through all the hassle again of researching about the visa that will make me stay longer in a certain country, exams I have to study for all night long, trying to adapt to a new culture. I now just want to enjoy life and focus on honing my skills work-wise.
I rarely give myself credit, but I'm so happy and proud of how far I've come now. Looking back, I was just struggling how to get that tourist visa and now I easily got it after 4 questions. I will see whether visiting USA will actually make me want to continue my American dream or not.

what kind of jobs are these people saving 20k in 3 years working, if you don't mind me asking? this whole thing definitely interests me but I'm wondering how much expertise / what kinds of fields you need to be working in to actually make significant money or if it's fairly universal
Most unskilled "regional" work (picking berries, bartending in a super rural area, caring for horses & cows on a farm out in the sticks, working housekeeping in a remote hotel, etc) will get you that far, actually! The cool thing about a lot of remote jobs in Australia is, in order to attract you to them, and because there's not plentiful housing in remote parts of Australia (due to them being in the middle of fcking nowhere) and there's no other way to secure employees, these sorts of jobs actually come with a place to stay and (sometimes) all your meals covered as well, and even sometimes a car for employees to use when they need. So you're effectively making $26/hour (that's minimum wage) 40 hours / week with no expenses other than your phone plan. And while some experience is required - maybe working in a restaurant if you're gonna be a bartender, or SOME kind of working with animals on a farm - they're all pretty entry level, because the thing is these areas just really need people, and Australian citizens are taken care of enough socially that they don't want to go work and earn a lot in the middle of nowhere. SO the country needs foreigners to do it, and you get pretty good (imo) perks in return.
These jobs are also all the sorts of things required for you to earn your additional year & 2nd year here - a lot of people here on the visa I have (not what I'm going to do, lol, but a lot do it) wind up starting jobs like that and then just rotate around those kind of jobs the whole 3 years because of how much money they make!

If you had ONE BILLION BUCKS what is the first thing you would do
Oo, great question. I would help out my cousins and granny. Then I would finish paying off my school visa, move to Australia (where I plan on going to school), and just hold off on making crazy decisions until I'm done with schooling. I do have a boyfriend who lives there, and I would definitely let him know so he doesn't have to keep working himself to death. He's been so helpful to me that I'm sure without him I'd be gone. I do plan on saving half, maybe investing (I'm not the smartest on investments, so I'll do my research). Then I'll travel the world with my boyfriend. Meet some new people and make some friends (I would definitely want to meet the friends I'd made on here). And when I'm done, I'll build my dream home and work at the museum or library like I always wanted to. I'm not sure if that's all the one billion, but that's what I would do.
