I don’t buy a lot of modern Barbies but I had to make an exception for this one, which has the Superstar Barbie vibe I love so much:
I didn’t realize the hair was a bit messy in this one (I’ll need to wash out all the product anyway) but still look how pretty this doll is:
And here she is with the original Superstar:
I wanted to switch dresses for some pics but the dress for the original Superstar is too narrow in the hips for this new dolly. I did manage to get Superstar a Barbie in the pink gala dress (although the back doesn’t full close):
I love that Mattel is embracing Barbiecore like this!

Some of you may have seen the recent news about the Barbie flip phone.
Produced by HMD, and marketed as a way to stay in the moment without being distracted by apps, the subtext is that this is a basic phone with limited functionality to allow children to access certain phone features (like being able to stay in contact with their parents while not home) without being given unsupervised access to the entire internet.
The Unicorn Play Phone Set features a mimicry of a Barbie smart-phone, with a matching unicorn phone case with a storage pocket for Barbie-themed toy credit cards - and a rainbow wrist strap so you can't accidentally drop it down a drain.
(Was that drain thing too specific?)
But neither of these are the first foray into Barbie phones.
In the late 90s, there actually was a working Barbie landline.
This was, from memory, the era of a lot of novelty landline phones so frankly should come as no surprise.
Or Phone Fun Skipper, which featured not just Skipper using a phone, but also a phone for you to use too.
More in line with the Unicorn smart phone, this is of course not an operational phone, but that isn't what bothers me most. It's that the "phone for you" does not actually look like the phone Skipper is using. It's not even the same colour! What's the point!
Side note, but Skipper is wearing an adorable little vest here. It's bizarre but loveable.
There have been a few iterations over the years of Barbie "phones" that are actual operational walkie-talkies, and I find those quite charming also.

I don't normally post about dolls, but I figured I'd post about these because I really like them.
By luck I got these vintage Barbie + Ken dolls for free, and in very good condition too. They've both got a lot of accessories that're packed into boths' cases. Not forgetting to mention the booklets are in very good condition as well.
I'd appreciate any corrections, but I think the Barbie I have is a "titan bubble cut" one, and the Ken is one of the first edition Ken dolls which is really cool. Let me know, though.

I swear, up until a few minutes before I took these pictures I would have told you I did a restore reroot a Steffie face Malibu Sunset PJ doll with bleach blonde hair. But once the Francie body came in that gave me a full set of them with their original hair. I had to look at them when I put Francie together. *And it was the Francie I did the restore reroot on. No wonder my brain hurts.
Who I do have scheduled for a restore reroot is a spare Barbie from that batch with a Casey face, and a regular PJ with her smiling face for my vintage heads on MtM girls. Forgot Barbie was Titian so that PJ will be getting a light silvery grey. The Casey (not Twiggy no eyelashes) face will be getting violet Monster High trimmings because she has to have short hair.
I do not do commissions what so ever so don't even ask. Go look up how much just the hair costs.
None of them are for sale either.

Finally finished working on the 1980s Barbie haul I got from Goodwill a couple of weeks ago (didn’t really have to do much work all but one were in really great shape). I had to use a flash for these pictures since the weather has been so gloomy lately so these pics aren’t optimal but the dolls still look beautiful I think.
First up, Beauty Secrets Barbie from 1979 ( I consider this an honorary 80s Barbie):
Then the fabulous Golden Dream Barbie from 1980. This doll has all her jewelry but the ring was missing its crystal so I replaced that - tried to get a good picture of that but only partially succeeded. I’m looking for the arm sleeve things right now but will probably end up making replacements for those:
1981 gave us gorgeous Pink & Pretty Barbie and Sunsational Barbie and Ken:
From 1982, which was a great Barbie year for me personally as I got all three of these dolls over the course of the year for Easter/birthday/Christmas - Twirly Curls Barbie, Dream Date Barbie, and Angel Face Barbie (poor Angel Face had a classic broken neck/knob stuck in head/head shoved down neck situation so I made a replacement neck section out of Sculpey and fished the knob out and stuck it back in the neck and glued the replacement part in place. It actually worked out great, and since the replacement piece is in the back of the neck I didn’t bother to paint it for now):
Everybody knows these two released in 1983, Crystal Barbie and Great Shape Barbie (who I personally think is so so pretty). Crystal Barbie was missing a jewel from her earrings so I replaced that, again not a great pic couldn’t get the focus on the earrings really well:
1984 gave us one of the most iconic of the 1980s Barbies, Peaches ‘N Cream. This doll had her beautiful gown and boa but was missing the belt/sash. I made a quick replacement from some chiffon I had on hand. It doesn’t look like the original belt but I think it works for now and has the same general spirit:
And finally, the other doll that really defines Barbie in the 1980s - 1985’s Day to Night Barbie. The scarf was missing from this dolls outfit so I made a quick replacement from some ribbon I had on hand until I can get the real thing:

Time to get back to my roots and provide a bit more Barbie lore.
Barbie's little sister Skipper first debuted in 1963, but she was not on her own for long. By 1965, the younger teen gang had expanded out to include both Skooter and Ricky.
They weren't in the line for very long, only a couple of years. Possibly because consumers kept thinking, "What kind of a name is Skooter?".
Seriously though: the Cut N Button Costumes Skooter that I used as a reference picture for Skooter is so charming. I love the idea of a doll line that encourages kids to take part in "making" clothes for the dolls without actually having to know how to sew.
In a way, Skooter and Ricky were kind of like Skipper's answer to Barbie's friends Midge and Allan. Note that Ricky was Skipper's "friend" - or according to some of the releases, "Skipper's special friend", or even "Skipper and Skooter's very special friend" - definitely NOT a boyfriend. At the time, Skipper was envisioned as a younger, more innocent character than Barbie so she was definitely too young for a boyfriend.
Something about "Skipper and Skooter's very special friend" feels ominous, though, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Who is Ricky? Why are they talking about him like that?
Note as well that they really wanted to make Skipper and the gang seem squeaky clean - allegedly, Skipper and Midge were both introduced to desexualise the Barbie line. You can see this in full action here as Ricky is described as a "smartly tailored" boy ready for "attending Sunday School".
I actually can't, off the top of my head, think of any other Barbie-line characters who are explicitly described as attending a religious service or event. I won't promise there aren't any, especially in older releases, but this does stand out!
