The recreation of the Russell Street Bombing in A Step Closer To The Madness still remains the most impressive feat that The Newsreader has pulled off, in my eyes. The amount of effort and dedication that went into making the explosion and the scene look as accurate as possible is so evident to viewers, especially when you compare it to the real footage from the day. Truthfully, sometimes I cannot tell the images of the recreation to the real event apart.

Michael Lucas shared to the Sydney Morning Herald that “there’s a real obligation to do it justice.” Filmed on the 3rd February 2021, both Russell Street and MacKenzie Street in Melbourne’s CBD were filled with vintage cars, period accurate ambulances, fire engines and police cars, and a whole heap of extras dressed appropriately in 1980s gear. One of the firefighters in the scenes; Graham Duncan, had even been on the scene of real bombing back in 1986, and he rated the recreation pretty spot on, and also spoke about how the episode would help bring the story to younger generations so that they can learn about it.

The recreation and the turning of these two busy Melbourne streets into a film set was so notable that it ended up making the real news. The Sydney Morning Herald, Seven News and Nine News all covered the filming, providing lots of behind the scenes footage and images. The streets were closed to the general public, and Victoria Police issued out warnings to the public about closures in the Russell Street vicinity, as well as out in Carlton for the pub scenes.

The filming was also the cause of real legality concern, and there was thoughts that the ABC might have faced an injunction from two of the Russell Street perpetrators in relation to their upcoming trial for an unrelated cause, which could have postponed the airing of the episode. This didn’t eventuate, as the ABC reassured their legal teams that their names and the criminal trial to follow the bombing wouldn’t be included in our show. Thank goodness for that.

El 7 de abril de 1926, una mujer de clase alta, de 50 años, de Dublín, le disparó en la cara a Benito Mussolini, el líder fascista de Italia.

¿Cómo había pasado la vida de Violet Gibson de la adinerada educación de Merrion Square en Dublín a morir en un asilo mental por haber intentado asesinar a un líder mundial fascista y cuán diferente pudo haber sido el mundo si hubiera tenido éxito?

Si ella hubiera acertado a su objetivo, el reinado de Mussolini como "hombre fuerte" habría terminado y sus éxitos no podrían haber envalentonado

¿qué llevó a Gibson a este acto fatídico?

Su educación fue uno de sus privilegios. Su padre se convirtió en el 1er barón de Ashbourne y se desempeñó como Lord Alto Canciller de Irlanda desde 1885 hasta 1905. Creció dividiendo su tiempo entre Dublín y Londres y a la edad de 18 años fue debutante en la corte de la Reina Victoria.

Sin embargo, se notó que cuando era niña, Gibson a menudo estaba enferma con fiebre escarlata, pleuresía, episodios de "histeria" mal definida y se afirmaba que tenía un "carácter violento". Durante sus años más jóvenes también mostró interés en la Ciencia Cristiana, y luego la teosofía, pero, a la edad de 26 años, en 1902, se convirtió al catolicismo para disgusto de su familia de fe anglicana.

Lo más doloroso para Gibson fue el olvido de su familia, avergonzada por tener a una desequilibrada que había querido acabar con alguien tan importante. Tras casi un año de cárcel, sometida a humillantes pruebas psiquiátricas y físicas (examen de su útero incluido) fue puesta en la frontera de Italia con Francia y en cuanto pisó suelo inglés le diagnosticaron en solo unos minutos "locura delirante con paranoia".

Have you ever played any of the Life is Strange games?

Not played - I like games with choices, but games that are pretty much just choices (especially the ones with time limits, and doubly so if they have lethal consequences for negative outcomes) aren't really my thing - but I've seen a full playthrough of the original game, yeah.

I really loved Max, Chloé, and co.'s story, and I used to read a lot of LiS fics back in the day. I missed out on all the other games and spin-offs, though, just had other interests to consider. I've been meaning to at least read up on the events of the others, but unfortunately I have too many interests and not enough time.

I will tell you, though, just as a fun bit of background, that when I was first planning the Kverse, way back when, I actually intended to include LiS. It's been a while, but lemme see what I can recall about that old idea:

-Blackwell Academy was like, a discount, non-Mutant exclusive Xavier's School. The story would've focused on Max, Chloé, Kate, and Victoria, all of whom had powers, engaging with Rachel's ghost and trying to find her killer, whom she couldn't recall.

-Max still had her timey wimey powers, but she was an Inhuman, and specifically able to manipulate the flow of tachyons - not just reversing, but going back and forth, or sideways. Going too far any which way made her pass out, bleed from the nose, and would eventually kill her if she really pushed it. (in retrospect, I think it would've been a mistake to not touch on her ability to photo travel, that's such a cool idea)

-Chloé had been somehow infused with the power of a massive storm (the one from the end of the game, actually, but not sure how it would've happened early and syphoned into her. I think Roxxon was involved, but I can't remember). I pictured her powers as resembling those of Cole McGrath from the Infamous games. She would've struggled with controlling her power a lot, and could easily harm those around her, friends and foes alike. (I still like the idea of Chloé and electrokinesis, they just seem like they go together)

-Kate was the most out there; she was like a reverse Ghost Rider! Her faith was so powerful that her guardian angel had possessed her to save her life, presumably in a similar situation as her suicide attempt in the game. Obsessed as I am with the Diablo depiction of angels, I pictured her transformation like Auriel, with the bladed ribbon and everything. She would've had a very conflicted relationship with her guardian angel - undeniable proof that her beliefs are warranted, yet an entity that wrests control of her body, even if her intent is pure. (I genuinely love this concept still and would very much like to do something with it in the Kverse proper)

-Victoria would've been a mutant, and actually (somewhat distantly) related to Emma Frost. Her power would've been to adopt a quartz-like form (originally sapphire). She would've struggled with the obvious comparisons - her inorganic form was inferior to Emma's, not just in composition but because she couldn't move while transformed, and she also lacked telepathy in her regular form. -Rachel had been murdered, still, but her ghost persisted, and she could do typical ghostly things like possessing people, going invisible and intangible, etc. She had no recollection of the day she was murdered, but still did her best to help the others figure out her case - even though she was terrified that doing so would force her to pass on, having accomplished little of what she desired in life.

It's kinda cool to talk about this! I doubt I'll do anything with it - not for lack of trying, I actually tried and failed to write a first chapter several times in those early years, it's just kind of an "out there" concept, even for the Kverse - but as you might imagine, there's a crap ton of scrapped ideas like this in my google docs, and I don't usually discuss them.
