Stranger Things Preferences
Their Pet Name for you.
(Featuring: Steve Harrington, Eddie Munson, Billy Hargrove, Jonathan Byers, Dmitri Antonov, Jim Hopper, Alexei, Murray Bauman, Robin Buckley, Argyle, Henry/001)
Warnings: Mentions of sex. This blog is 18+ Minors do not interact.
A/N: My first preference! There will be quite a few of these across quite a few fandoms so if you'd like to be tagged in future preferences or future stranger things posts please let me know in the comments! :) Also any Russian is taken straight from google translate so pre-apologies if I have butchered it! Enjoy!
Steve Harrington
Steve keeps his pet names quite generic, baby, babe, sweetheart. It's not so much the names he uses but how he says them. Most of the time he's most comfortable using the shortened version of your name or nickname he has for you, but the amount of affection he would put into it would make you melt. If he's being especially flirtatious you'd even occasionally get doll. He doesn't miss the effect it has on you when he calls you that.
Eddie Munson
Eddie is as theatrical with his pet names as he is with anything else in life. He loves to call you princess, especially during Hellfire meetings when he can incorporate you into his campaign. I think Eddie would switch between a few pet names to try to keep it interesting, baby, sunshine, sweetheart. It doesn't matter what he calls you it never fails to give you butterflies. Let's not pretend that if you two are hanging out in his trailer while you joke around and play air guitar together that he doesn't call you his little Rockstar.
Billy Hargrove
Billy's pet names for you depend on two things; his mood, and who you are around. In public you're only getting the less heartfelt pet names, he refers to you as his girl a lot in front of other people. Not only does he love the small smile it brings to your face but it also feeds into his possessive side, knowing that everyone knows you are his. When you two are alone and have been together for a while, Billy finally shoes a softer side of himself. He will compliment you a lot and attach all sort of pet names to those compliments, baby, sugar, sweet thing, still loving to resort to calling you his girl. You're mad at him and he's trying to make it up to you? Get ready for him to bargain his way back into your arms, wrapping his arms around you as he whispers in your ear, "Come on sweetheart, you know you can't stay mad at me."
Jonathan Byers
This soft, shy, adorable baby will probably be hesitant to use pet names for a long time. I honestly doubt you would hear them until you two begin to get intimate and he's too lost in the moment to think about what he's saying. He's pussy drunk and rambling into your neck, pet names would all be soft and sweet while he's chasing his high, beautiful and sweetheart would be at the top of his list. Getting high in his room? This sweet man would be telling you how you're his sunshine, rambling on in his delirium about how you light up his life.
Dmitri Antonov
While this man's English is very good, he still prefers to use pet names in Russian. There's something about the way he looks at you with his intense gaze as he slips back into his native tongue that just turns you into an absolute puddle. His favourites include котенок (kitten) and моя любовь (my love). The thought of this man holding you while you curl up in bed for the night, arms wrapped around you while he whispers endearing words in Russian into your ear is enough to bring butterflies to your stomach.
Jim Hopper
Let's not pretend like for a goooooooood while this man affectionately refers to you as kid even if you are barely a few years younger than him. He's a tough shell of a man that will refuse to open up or show his feelings for a long time, but when he does you realise its worth the wait. He doesn't throw around pet names and words of endearment a lot as he prefers to save them for moments when he feels it's right. When it's just the two of you and you're sharing a soft moment, sometimes referring to you as darling in his softer moments. Occasionally you might even get a cheeky baby.
Alexei
Another Russian baby, this adorable man will always call you pet names in Russian, it doesn't matter how much his English has improved. It just means more to him coming from his native tongue. His regular go to include голубь (Dove) and милый (Darling). Although, Murray taught him how Americans us Pumpkin as a term of endearment as a way to screw with you both and now it's one of Alexei's favourite things to call you. Jokes on Murray because seeing Alexei's face light up as he reaches for you and calls you pumpkin is enough to fall even more in love with him.
Murray Bauman
I feel like Murray cannot find it in himself to call you soft names to start off with. He's still confused by the fact that you even want to be with him, he's not going to possibly embarrass himself further using some pet names that might cross some invisible line he's set up for himself. He refers to as lady a lot, or another unique name that fits your looks of personality. Once this man is comfortable and more secure in your relationship I think the names would still stay light and not too sensitive. You would definitely get honey a lot, I don't think Murray would be able to resist yelling through the house when he gets home, "Honey, I'm home!"
Robin Buckley
Robin would also keep her pet names generic just like her bestie Steve, but less out of originality and more just to play it safe. Robin would have some insecurities going into a relationship after all the careful steps she took just to get to where you two are now. She is hesitant at first to say the wrong thing so she sticks to a lot of sweetheart and babe. One day you were spending time together and she slipped up and called you buttercup. She panicked for a second worrying what you would think of the nickname, but seeing your smile wiped all of those worries away and it became one of her favourite pet names so far.
Argyle
Okay so we all know this cutie is not going to call you any conventional pet names unless he's sober which is not very often. You're going to get a lot of my dude and bro but he does really mean it affectionately with you. Other than that you're definitely going to get a lot of made up names that mean absolutely nothing but to him they mean a lot; wicked lady, cream puff, anything. He would totally refer to you as "my queen" when he lets you into the van which he refers to as your chariot. Your favourite pet name would be the time he said, "My pretty girl is gonna get all the pizza she wants" he couldn't understand your reaction as you couldn't think of what to say next after hearing Argyle call you his pretty girl.
Henry/001
I whole heartedly believe this man would refer to you as pet. He does mean it endearingly but he also can't resist how you scrunch your nose up at hearing the teasing term. He also uses a lot of "My little..." whether it be bird, bunny, dove. He constantly feels the need to protect you and he shows that in his terms of endearment by referring to you as small and innocent. I know this man would call you his good girl, and you will have to pry that thought out of my cold dead hands.
A/N: Hope you guys like this! Reminder that if you want to be tagged in future Stranger things posts or other preferences to let me know in the comments and ill create a tags list :)

okay so after that video was posted of the screams at the radio station, i remembered i wanted to look up info on what these episode titles mean and i think it gives some insight as to what the hell is going on at that radio station. so yeah let’s get into it 👇
first things first: the episode titles of the first 6 episodes has been released via jeff sneider. apparently sneider is an award-winning film critic so idk i imagine this would be legit considering he wouldn’t want to lose his credibility considering his status?? but who knows
episode 1: the crawl ( i wrote about this episode when they first announced the title)
episode 2: the vanishing of ***** wheeler (personally i think it’s karen going missing. it just makes so much sense to me. she had her own poster for s4. she has had contact with the mindflayer when she tried to have an affair with billy when he was a host. there’s interesting parallels between karen and the creel family. like karen is going missing i just know it. and nancy also said in s4 that something happened to her mom in one of the visions vecna showed her!)
episode 3: the turbow trap (ok so apparently a turbo trap is an acoustic tool?? so my assumption after reading up on it, is that a turbo trap basically absorbs the bass through the tube of it because there is a hole on the top of it and depending on the size of hole, dictates the air flow which then puts out a certain frequency. basically, the more air a turbo trap can “trap”, the lower the frequency it can reach. i imagine they are going to be creating a big turbo trap involving music and/or sound since that is a deterrent for vecna and it also attracts the demo bats?? and they’re also filming at the radio station a lot and radio stations are frequencies (think FM and AM radio stations you go to to listen to music or the news or whatever))
episode 4: the sorcerer (i mean my immediate thoughts went to el, but then after reading some D&D lore about the connection a sorcerer has with dragons (imagery/mentions of dragons throughout the seasons and the painting was of the party up against a dragon), a possible touch of a demon (vecna/mindflayer), and the mention of how they’re competitive to the usefulness of wizards (will the wise) in a party… i’m like holy shit is the sorcerer potentially WILL????? like will finally evolves to becoming a sorcerer in s5?? or the sorcerer is el and will remains the wizard and we get the super duo willel???)
episode 5: shock jock (this is the definition of a shock jock. i’m thinking which character would fit this description and i say it’s murray. that would also make sense as to why he’s filmed there at the radio station. remember murray’s character was introduced as someone who was investigating the russians and the lab and all that, so for him to start a radio station being the “humorous, controversial guy” in all this mess makes 100% of sense to me lmao)
episode 6: escape from camazotz (i feel like this title gives some insight as to what the hell was going on in the new footage of screaming at the radio station. a camazotz is basically a death bat. i assume it’s the demo bats making a comeback from s4. but here’s the thing: a camazotz is described in one description from some computer game to have a very specific screech. if this screech, hits an enemy god then the sound wave will echo. just think back to the explanation of the turbo trap and what that does. so yeah, i think camazotz are at the radio station and the screeching was THEM. the screams sounded so chilling thinking it was steve or someone else, but i don’t think it was human screams! i think they were demo bat screeches 😎 also, steve was attacked by one of these things so idk does he have some connection with them now and that’s why they’re after him???)

Everyone jumped into gear, trying to find music for Nancy so that we could bring her out of her Vecna trance. Steve and I locked eyes as he freaked out while trying to wake up Nancy. “Whatever you guys are doing up there, hurry up!”
Erica and I looked at each other then booked it to the backroom, which I guess was Eddie’s room. “Steve says you need to hurry the hell up!”
“Yeah, no shiiiiiiit!” Dustin yelled.
“We’re trying,” Max said. “We can’t find anything.”
“Seriously, what is all this shit?” Robin asked.
“I mean, wh-wh-what are you even looking for?” Eddie asked, running back in the room, a bunch of cassettes in his arms as I stood next to him.
“Madonna, Blondie, Bowie, Beatles! Music, we need music!”
Eddie held up an Iron Maiden cassette as he and I yelled, “THIS IS MUSIC!”
I grabbed the cassette from his hand before grabbing the cassette player, running back to the mattress… only, when I got there and looked up to tell Steve we got the music, what I saw brought me back to our Junior year when he started dating Nancy; Steve holding Nancy in his arms on the ground, her telling her that everything was okay and that he was there for her.
I looked down as I heard footsteps rushing towards the mattress, tears lining my waterline. I sniffled a little then looked up, seeing Dustin looking at me, puzzled. “Uhm,” I said, wiping my lower lash line. “She broke out herself. She’s fine.”
Sighing, I said, “I’ll be outside. I just need some fresh air. Ya’know, being stuck in the Upside Down all night.” I lightly chuckled with no humor behind it at all. Before I could step around him, Dustin gave me a hug, one that I returned, tightly. He pulled away before looking up, asking Steve and Nancy if they were ready to come down.
I stepped outside, sitting on the porch that was off the right of the door… or left, depending on which way you were looking. Part of me wanted to go into Eddie’s stash to look for something to calm my racing thoughts, another part wanted a cigarette, and the last part wanted to go off into town and steal something, but I resisted all urges when I heard the door open, a voice following after, “There you are.”
Looking to my left, I watched as Steve carefully made his way across the small patch of grass that sat in between the porch and the steps to the front door, careful not to step on any sticker bushes.
“Hi,” I said, quietly, turning to face him, my legs dangling over the side.
Steve stood in between them, his neck at my eyeline. Bringing my hand up, I lightly traced over them, smiling a little, more to myself than anything.
“You’re smiling at my wounds?” he asked.
Lightly shaking my head, I snickered before looking at his eyes. “You make wounds look good. I mean–” I sighed, dropping my head again. Looking back up at him, I said, “This whole look you’re sporting right now has got you looking–” I brought up the okay hand gesture while winking and clicking my tongue once before continuing, “Fucking amazing, and I would love nothing more than to sneak off somewhere, kiss you stupid and do things to you, clothing optional.”
Steve laughed, resting his hands on my outer thighs. “I love you. And I would love to do all that, too, but we can’t, unfortunately.” He was quiet for a minute before he spoke up again. “You gonna tell me why you’re really out here? Dustin said something about you needing fresh air.”
“You don’t buy it?” I asked.
He sighed. “I do, but I know there’s more to it.”
It was my turn to sigh, my hands barely skimming over the makeshift bandage we made out of Nancy’s shirt. “Just… the way you were holding her brought me back to when you two were dating. I know I shouldn’t let it affect me, but… I guess it still kind of does. I mean, she’s been gawking at you the whole time we've been in this little group together. I just–” Another sigh. “I don’t know. I’m not jealous, but I guess I’m a little annoyed that she’s gawking at you when she clearly has Jonathan, she’s put herself in charge of this group, she’s being aggressive with her words towards Eddie, and–”
My words stopped as Steve’s lips pressed to mine, and I instantly shut the hell up, wrapped my arms around his neck gently to not hurt his wounds, and closed my eyes, relishing in the way his lips felt on mine.
I always had this feeling with Steve. I always enjoyed being with him, sexually and non-sexually. Steve was my soulmate, I could feel it. Since we were kids, I’ve always enjoyed being around him. He made me laugh, cry, feel better about myself, and I’m sure I’ve done the same with him.
He knows my boundaries, he knows what I do and don’t like, he knows my favorite song from all the artists I listen to. He just… knows. And I him. I know every single thing there is to know about Steve Harrington.
When I felt his hands under my shirt, resting on my waist, I was fucking done for. “We–” I said, pulling away from him a little. “We better stop or else I’ll be screaming your name on this porch.”
He laughed lightly at that, taking a small step back. “Well, let’s go then. The sun’s about to rise.”
~~~
We’d all decided to go across the road to Max’s trailer, it being big enough to house all of us. Steve, Eddie and myself were all sitting on the couch, Erica on one of the arms, Nancy sitting on the chair across from us, Dustin standing next to the couch, Robin sitting on the floor, leaning against the entertainment center, Max on the other side of the couch near the kitchen, and Lucas standing on the other side of Nancy by the door.
She looked traumatized as she explained what Vecna showed her. “He showed me things that haven’t happened yet. The most awful things. I saw a dark cloud spreading over Hawkins. Downtown on fire. Dead soldiers. And this… this giant creature with… a gaping mouth. And this creature wasn’t alone. There were so many monsters. An army, and they were coming into Hawkins, into our neighborhoods, our homes. And then he showed me my mom.”
I looked over at Dustin after she said that about her mom, fear in both of our eyes at our mom being hurt or worse… dead. I didn’t want to find my mom’s body because of Vecna because if I did, I wouldn’t stop looking for him to kill him right on site.
“And Holly… Mike,” Nancy continued. “And they… they were all…”
It was quiet for a moment while she quietly cried before Steve sighed next to me, saying, “Okay, but… he’s just trying to scare you, Nance. Right? I mean… I mean, it’s not real.”
“Not yet,” she whispered. “But there… there was something else.”
“Care to share with the rest of the class?” I asked.
“Liv, I’m getting there.” She looked down and around at nothing as she said, “He showed me gates. Four gates. Spreading across Hawkins. And these gates, they looked like the one outside of Eddie’s trailer, but they didn’t stop growing. And this wasn’t the Upside Down Hawkins. This was our Hawkins. Our home.”
I looked over at Steve, seeing him moving from the corner of my eye. His hands were at his mouth, one covering the other, his eyes closed. Wrapping my hand around his upper arm, I leaned my head against his shoulder, feeling the weight of what Nancy had explained.
“Four chimes,” Max said. Every single pair of eyes looked over at her, her words continuing, “Vecna’s clock. It always chimes four times. Four exactly.”
“I heard them, too,” Nancy whispered.
I sighed and closed my eyes, not really wanting to deal with any of this right now, but as I opened my eyes, I saw that we were all looking back at Nancy.
Taking a deep breath, I released it while picking my head up, saying, “He’s been telling us his plan this whole time.”
“Four kills,” Lucas said.
Turning my head to look at Lucas, all I could do was press my lips together, annoyed.
“Four gates,” he added, looking at Max.
Standing, I released an annoyed breath, walking to stand between Nancy and Lucas by the door. “I’ve been saying that for a couple days now. But no one listens to Olivia! It’s basically the end of the world.”
“Liv, if that’s true…” Dustin said. “He’s only one kill away.”
“Yeah, and who the hell do you think he’s gonna come back after.” I gestured towards Max. “Our lovely little redhead.”
“Jesus Christ,” Eddie said, burying his face in his hands. “Jesus Christ.”
“Try ‘em again,” Steve said.
Oh, did I mention that once we got to Max’s we tried calling the Byers’? No? Oh, well… we did, and no answer.
“Try ‘em again.”
Max went into the kitchen to try making that phone call again to the Byers as I heard my name being whispered. I looked over at Steve, knowing he was the one to call my name. Walking back towards the couch, he reached out his hand for me to take, which I gladly did.
I sat down between him and Eddie again just as Steve sat back on the cushions. He pulled me into him, getting into our normal sleeping position, just… sitting up on a couch.
A few seconds later, Dustin asked, “Anything?” to which Max replied, “No. Rang a few times, then went to busy signal.”
“Maybe you punched it in wrong,” Steve said. “Try it again.”
“I didn’t punch it in wrong,” Max replied.
“Well, I don’t know.”
“Dude, I think she knows how to use a phone,” Dustin said.
“I’m just saying, she could’ve typed it in wrong.”
Max had called again, so when I heard her hang up the phone again, I sighed. “Same shit,” she said.
“How is that possible?” Lucas asked.
“Maybe they’re actually busy, or they’re not home,” I said.
“No,” Dustin said. “I told you guys, Joyce has this telemarketer job. She’s always on the phone. Mike won’t stop whining about it.”
“Okay, yeah, but this phone’s been busy for, what, three days now?” Max said. “That’s not Joyce. No way. Something’s wrong.”
Taking a deep breath, I shifted on Steve, trying to get more comfortable. “Maybe they’re off on their own little adventure.”
“Max is right,” Nancy said. “It can’t be just coincidence. It can’t be.” She got up and walked to the front window, looking out of it as she continued, “Whatever’s happening in Lenora is connected to all of this. I’m sure of it. But Vecna can’t hurt them.”
“Doubt they know about Vecna,” I deadpan.
“Not if he’s dead.” Quickly turning back around to face the group, she said, “We have to go back in there. Back to the Upside Down.”
“Whoa, no, no, no, no, no,” Steve said as Eddie also said, “Nope.” Sighing, I stood and looked at her, all the seriousness I could muster in my eyes. “NO one is going back to the Upside Down. Not a fucking soul.”
Steve stood up and walked over to Nancy, standing in front of her. “Now, let’s think this through.”
“What is there to think through?” Nancy asked.
Moving to stand in between them, I looked at Nancy, rage in my eyes. “My boyfriend almost got murdered, Nancy! What if it was Jonathan! You wouldn’t go back in there!”
“She’s right,” Steve said. “We barely made it out of there in one piece.”
“Yeah, because we weren’t prepared,” Nancy said. “But this time, we will be. We’ll get weapons and protection. We’ll go through the gate, we’ll find his lair, and we’ll kill him.”
I crossed my arms and narrowed my eyes at Nancy as Steve said, “Yeah, or he’ll kill us.”
“Are you fucking serious right now?” I asked. “The only fucking reason you survived was because he wanted you to. He’s not fucking scared of us.”
“Language,” Nancy said.
“And for good reason,” Robin said, standing. “We were wrong about Venca. Henry. One. Sorry, wh-what are we calling him now?”
About four people gave their opinion, confusing Robin, to which I said, “Robs, focus, babe.”
“Right. Not sure who she directed that at, but I’ll take it. “We’ve learned something new about Vecna/Henry/One. He’s a number like Eleven, only a sick, evil, male, child-murdering version of her with really bad skin, but my-my-my-my point is, he’s super powerful. He could turn us inside out with the snap of his fingers. It’s not a fair fight.”
“So then why fight fair?” Dustin said. “You’re right, he’s like Eleven.”
“That gives us the upperhand,” I added. “We know her strengths, and weaknesses.”
“Weaknesses?” Erica asked.
“Yeah!” I said, a small smile appearing on my face. “When El remote travels–”
“She goes into this sort of trance-like state,” Dustin said.
“Bet it’s the same for Vecna.”
“That would explain what he was doing in that attic,” Lucas said.
“Exactly!” Dustin and I said. He continued with “When he attacks his next victim, I’ll bet’cha he’s back in that attic, physical body defenseless.”
“Defenseless?” Steve said. “Yeah, what about the army of bats?” He gestured to his neck, making me a little sad.
“Right?” Dustin said. “True, we’ll have to find a way past them. Distract them somehow.”
I sighed, now seriously aggravated. “No one is going back to the Upside Down!”
“And, uh, how do we do that, exactly?” Eddie asked.
“No idea.”
“By not going,” I added.
“Dearest sister, once they’re gone, he doesn’t stand a chance!” Dustin said. “It’ll be like slaying sleeping Dracula in his coffin!”
“That all sounds good in theory,” Robin said. “But there is no pattern to Vecna’s killings. I mean, at least not one that I can decipher.”
“She’s right,” I said. “You don’t know when he’s going to attack next. Or who, for that matter.”
Without missing a beat, Max said, “Yeah, we do.”
“No.”
“I can still feel him.”
“No.”
“I’m still… marked, Liv. Cursed.”
“Don’t even think about it,” I said, pointing in her direction.
Max continued, “I ditch Kate Bush, I draw his focus back to me.”
Tears sprung to my eyes as she said this. I could see why she wanted to, but I didn’t want her to basically sacrifice herself just for Vecna to be distracted for a moment. With a couple of tears streaming down my cheeks, I whispered, “Max.”
She looked at me before Lucas added, “You can’t.”
“He’ll kill you,” Lucas and I said.
“I survived before,” she said. After a few seconds, she added, “I can survive again.”
Wanting to rip my hair out, I made a frustrated grunt, while also wanting to throw or punch something.
“Liv–”
“No!”
“I just–I need to keep him busy long enough so that you guys can get into that attic. Then you can chop his head off, stab him in the heart, blow him up with some explosives Dustin and/or Liv cooks up. I honestly–I really don’t care how you put this asshole in his grave. Just… whatever it is… whatever you do…” She looked directly at me, eyes intensely locking on mine. “Try not to miss.”
Dropping my head back, as well as dropping my arms from their crossed position, I groaned before closing my eyes. Feeling hands on my shoulders, I picked my head up and opened my eyes, meeting Steve’s somewhat worried one. “You guys stress me out.”
~~~
Eddie had grabbed a phonebook, telling us all to gather over at the dining table. I was standing between him and Steve with everyone else crowding around us as Eddie slammed the book down onto the table, pointing to a spot on the page he had opened it up to, an advertisement for The War Zone. “Check this out. The War Zone. I’ve been there once. It’s huge. They got… everything you need for, uhh… well, uh, killing things, basically.”
“Fake Rambo got enough guns there, Eddie?” I asked. “Bro, is that a grenade?”
“I mean, how is any of this legal?” Robin asked on Eddie’s left side.
“Well, lucky for us it is, so…” Eddie said, sarcastically. “This-this place is just far enough outside of Hawkins.”
“Just as long as we steer clear of the main roads, we should be able to avoid the cops and angry hicks,” I said. At the looks everyone gave, I breathed in annoyance. “For Eddie, dumbasses.”
“If we’re trying to avoid angry hicks,” Erica said. “Maybe we shouldn’t go to some store called The War Zone.”
“Normally I’d agree, but we need the weapons,” Nancy said. “So, I think it’s worth the risk.”
“Me, too,” Lucas sighed.
Leaning onto the table with the palm of my hands, I chuckled while hanging my head forward, my chin meeting my collarbone. “You guys are still fucking nuts.”
“Language,” Nancy muttered.
“Coming from the girl who said bullshit about five times in a freaking row,” I said, picking up my head to look at Nancy. “You guys are nuts for wanting to venture back to the Upside Down, and for wanting to put Eddie’s life in danger.” Turning my eyes to my brother, I said, “Dustin, what’s your stance on this? I mean, Eddie’s your other older male best friend.”
“Is it worth the time? It’ll take all day to bike there and back,” he replied.
“Who said anything about bikes?” Eddie said.
“You got some sort of car we don’t know about?” Steve asked.
Standing up straight, Eddie looked over my head at Steve, smiling as he said, “It’s not exactly a car, Steve. And it’s not exactly mine, but, uh… it’ll do.” Turning around to face Max, Eddie said, “Hey, Red, uh, you got a ski mask or a bandana, something like that?”
Audibly taking a deep breath, I turned my head to look at her, a sly smile on my face. “You got that Halloween mask from ‘84?”
She smiled a little at me before going into her bedroom to retrieve the mask, giving it to Eddie, who went outside with all of us following him. We made it to the side of one of the trailers before he put the mask on, poking his head around the side, causing me to laugh quietly.
We ran past the trailer that was across the way from us before going around the side of an RV, Eddie jumping in first. As I jumped in with Steve’s help, I heard Eddie say, “That was suffocating,” after he discarded the Michael Myers mask.
I looked back, watching as Steve jumped in behind me, everyone else following after him as I followed Eddie to the front of the RV. Watching as Eddie reached under the steering wheel, I asked, “Whoa, hey, what’re you doing?” He cut a cord as his answer, my eyes going wide. “You’re hotwiring it?”
“Where’d you learn how to do this?” Steve asked.
“It’s simple,” I said. Silence filled the air for a moment as I looked back at Steve, who had his brows scrunched. “Oh, you weren’t asking me, okay.” Turning my head back to face Eddie, Steve said, “We’ll talk about that later.”
“Ed-Eddie? Wanna answer?” I said.
“Well, Henderson, when the other dads were teaching their kids how to fish or play ball, my old man was teaching me how to hotwire. Now, I swore to myself I wouldn’t wiiiind up like he did, but now I’m wanted for murder, and soon, grand theft auto. So, uhh, I’m really living up to that Munson name.” As he explained all this, he was cutting what he needed before brushing the wires against each other.
Robin came up behind us, saying, “Uh, Eddie, I’m not sure I love the idea of you driving.”
“Oh, I’m just starting this sucker,” Eddie said. “Harrington’s got her. Don’t ‘cha, big boy?”
I looked at Eddie, confused, as the engine started, the owners demanding us to open the door that Eddie had locked upon arrival inside the RV.
“Hey!”
“They locked the door!”
“Well, are we just gonna stand here and look pretty while they try to bust in and call the cops on Eddie, or are we actually gonna steal this fucking thing?” I asked.
“Shit, go,” Steve said, pushing Eddie out of the driver’s seat. I moved to sit in the passenger seat.
“Babe, it’s just a car,” I said, seeing the panic in his eyes.
“Everybody, hang on to something!” Steve yelled, turning to face the back for a moment.
I saw Nancy moving towards the front as I looked back to see where Dustin was sitting as Lucas said, “Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Let’s go! Let’s go!”
“Drive, Steve, driiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!” Dustin yelled.
I watched as Steve put the RV in drive before putting his foot on the gas pedal, sending the vehicle forward, Lucas’ repeating of the word “Go!”
“Shit, they look pissed,” Dustin said.
“I mean, it’s not everyday you lose your house and car in one fell swoop,” Robin said.
Even through my excited laughter, I still heard everything they said.
“Hold on, hold on, hold on!” Steve said. He swerved a little, running into the trash cans at the side of the road, before making the widest turn onto the main road, almost taking us off said road a couple times.
When my laughter eventually died down, I turned to look at Steve, chuckling, “Remind me to never let you drive an RV again.”
He chuckled while trying to get a feel for it. “Okay.”
~~~
The further we drove, the more stable the vehicle seemed to be, which told me that Steve was getting a handle on it. I couldn't help but smile at him as he got more comfortable with it. Almost reminded me of when he learned how to drive, how comfortable he got in his car after his parents gifted it to him.
I could feel Nancy’s eyes staring into me as I just looked at Steve, taking a deep breath to start a conversation. “How’s it handle, babe?”
“Not half bad,” he replied. “Considering that this is a… house.”
I chuckled. “Was that a sarcastic comment I just heard?” I watched the corner of his mouth lift up a little, a quick and quiet chuckle coming from him. The moment it was quiet, I listened to the radio, singing along to what was playing on the radio, “They let me know you were gone.”
Sighing happily, I turned my head over my shoulder to look at Steve, smiling. “Do you remember when we were in, like, 7th grade and we heard this song for the first time?”
I saw the look on his face like he was thinking about it. “What’s this song again?”
“Fire and Rain by James Taylor. I remember just sitting in your room one night and this song came on the radio, and I instantly fell in love with it.” I knew he remembered what the song was, but telling him the first time I ever heard this song will forever be my favorite. That was also the night I knew I liked him as more than a friend.
“I know you know a lot about me and my… dreams, or whatever, but I don’t think I’ve ever told you this,” he said.
“Told me what?” I asked, turning a little to face him.
“Ya’know, it’s… it’s silly, but I… I’ve actually, uhm… I always had this dream that I’d have this really… really big family,” he explained. “I’m talking like a full brood of Harringtons. Like, five, six kids.”
“Six?” I asked, incredulously with my brows raised.
“Yeah. Six little nuggets. Three girls, three boys.” He chuckled as he continued, “And-and every summer, I figured all of us Harringtons, we would pack into something like this and… just see the country.”
I looked at him, falling even more in love with him as he continued, “Ya’know, the Rockies, Grand Canyon, maybe Yellowstone.” He looked at me for a moment, that same look in his eyes that I was giving him. “End up in some beachside town in California. Spend a week parked in the sand. Learn how to surf or something.”
“I could see you surfing,” I said, quietly, after a moment before adding, “But, that sounds amazing.”
He looked at me, asking, “Yeah?”
I nodded my head, smiling. “Yeah.” I wanted to lean over and kiss him stupid, but couldn’t or else we’d crash. “Uhm, except for that six kid part. I love you, but that sounds like a total nightmare with a migraine.”
He looked in the back of the RV for a quick second, saying, “If only I had some practice.”
Looking back at everyone in the back, I smirked, chuckling to myself. “Yep, that’s fair.” I stretched my hand out for him to take, to which he quickly did, lacing our fingers together.
“I would kiss your hand, but I’d drag you out of your seat,” he said, chuckling, looking at me for a moment.
“I wouldn’t mind.”
He turned his head back to look out at the road as I started to sing along to the song once more, turning my own head to look out at the road.
~~~
I guess I had dozed off or something because I was being woken up by Steve whispering my name, saying that we were at War Zone. He gave me the option of staying with Dustin or coming inside. I chose the latter. Dustin could take care of himself, but that didn’t stop me from telling him to not draw attention to the RV.
Erica, myself, Steve, Max, Robin and Nancy went inside the store after having parked out back. We stood there as we all looked around, seeing a shit ton of people inside.
“So much for avoiding angry hicks,” Robin said.
“Let’s just get what we need and leave,” I said. “And, please, don’t draw attention to yourself.”
“Let’s be… fast,” Nancy said.
“Yup,” Robin added.
“Definitely,” Erica retorted.
Steve took my hand and led me to the men’s clothing section, where he picked out a leather jacket, a camo style shirt, a random pair of socks and some combat boots. After I had found a similar outfit for me that was more my style, we found Robin putting some gas cans into the buggy.
“How many of these do you think we need?” she asked.
“Five or six,” Steve answered, putting a couple more into the buggy.
I noticed Robin standing still, looking off, so I looked in the direction she was looking in before looking back and forth between her and the girl she was looking at as I remembered who that girl was. “What’cha gonna do, Robs?”
“Just stand here and gawk at her?” Steve added.
“Shut up,” she said. She took one step forward before stopping, some guy having come up to Vickie, scaring her.
The three of us watched their interaction, my excitement dwindling as I felt Robin’s confidence start to plummet. We watched them kiss, my heart breaking for Robin. I wanted to kill that boy for interrupting the moment Robin was having.
Vickie turned to look at us - well, Robin - before her boyfriend decided to do so as well, my best friend turning and running away from us as Steve and I called her name.
Erica found us a couple of minutes later, saying that Jason and his basketball buddies were in the store. Once we found Nancy, we all hauled ass out of the store, paying of course, all of our gear in all of our hands as we booked it back to the RV.
Steve opened the door, walking in first as Lucas asked what happened. “We gotta go.”
“Your old friends are here,” Erica said, sitting next to her brother.
I walked in the RV, going to sit in the passenger seat, Nancy having beat me to it. Thank God Robin had called her name, giving her a look that made her roll her eyes before getting up. I sat down as Max climbed in, closing the door.
~~~
Steve found a big ass piece of land to hide out at, everyone getting out to set up different stations, I guess. Nancy and Max were at one station with the shotgun we had purchased, Lucas and Erica making spears with knives and big ass sticks at another, Eddie and Dustin making shields out of metal trash can lids at a third station, while Steve, Robin and myself were sitting in front of the RV making homemade molotov cocktails with gasoline.
We were sitting on various flat items as we did our task; Steve to my right, Robin to my left. It was quiet for a moment between the three of us as Robin was pouring the gasoline into the bottle that was in my hand. I was looking at Steve as he was contemplating something before he spoke.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” he said.
“What doesn’t make sense,” Robin and I asked.
“That was Dan Shelter. He graduated, like, two years ago.”
“And you’re hung up on this why?” I asked.
“Because he’s in college, babe, which means he was visiting on Spring Break. I mean, wouldn’t you visit me if you were in college?”
I sighed. “Yes, but I’m not.”
“Anyway, Fast Times was returned, like, I don’t know, a week ago?” Steve said. “Right? Unless she’s got some horndog brother that we don’t know about. Which is possible. Or she’s just, like, really into Judge Reinhold?”
I watched Robin’s reaction as he went on about Vickie’s boyfriend. “Babe, I love you and this outfit is, like, top tier, but if you don’t stop talking, I’m gonna murder you in your sleep,” I said.
“Steve,” Robin said, eyes closed in what is clearly discomfort.
Steve looked over at her, asking, “What?”
“I don’t care,” she said. “And I don’t understand why you do either with everything that’s going on. Honestly, this feels like the perfect time for that little pull of the rug… because in the face of the world ending, the stakes of my love life feel spectacularly low.”
“Yeah,” Steve said, looking down. “I mean, I get you there, but… I still have hope.”
I gave Robin the bottle that I put a cloth in before Steve handed me another one. “Not everything has a happy ending,” I said.
“Yeah, yeah, believe me, I know,” Steve said, looking in front of him before back down at my hands.
I sighed in annoyance. “She’s not talking about failed romance, babe. Besides, you have me now.”
“She’s right,” Robin said, pouring the liquid into the clear bottle. “I have this terrible, gnawing feeling that…” She stopped pouring to look Steve in the eyes as she continued, “It might not work out for us this time.”
“Robin, stop,” I whispered, setting the bottle down on the ground to stand and pace in front of them.
“You think we shouldn’t be doing this?” Steve asked.
Without missing a beat, I turned my head in their direction to say a hard and quick, “No!”
“I think we’re mad fools, the lot of us, but…” Robin said, starting to pour the gas again, but stopped after her statement to sigh and look out at everyone to add, “if we don’t stop him, who will?” She looked back at Steve, saying, “We have to try, right?”
I stopped my pacing to look at my boyfriend, seeing him nodding his head ever so slightly before looking over at Robin to say, “Yeah.” He lifted the bottle in his hand before saying, “To killing Vecna.”
She grabbed one of the bottles next to her, holding it up, replying, “Slash Henry.”
They both turned their eyes to me, an expectant look in their eyes. I sighed exasperatedly and walked over to Robin, picking up another cocktail we had prepared, holding it up in the air as I walked to stand in between them, saying, “Slash One.” We clinked our bottles, Robin and I setting ours back on the ground.
I honestly didn’t know what else to do, so I walked into the RV, running my fingers through my hair once I was inside, my pacing starting up again. I didn’t even realize I had started crying or that someone had walked into the RV with me until my face was being buried into the person's chest.
I knew that person was Steve. I felt his hand on the back of my head and his lips on the top of my head. Wrapping my arms around his middle, I let out a quiet sob that made him hold me a little tighter.
“I know,” he whispered. “I’m scared, too.”
“I’m not scared for myself,” I whispered back to him. “I’m scared for Max.” Looking up at him, I felt a tear slide down my cheek as I sniffled. “She’s just a kid.”
“I know, baby, but she’s a strong kid.”
Sighing, I looked at a spot on his shirt for a moment before closing my eyes. “I’m also scared of losing you,” I whispered. It was so soft, I wondered if he heard me or not.
I got my answer as he replied, “Hey, look at me,” while putting his finger under my chin, lifting my head up so that our eyes could meet. Shaking his head while cupping my cheeks, he said, “You’re not going to lose me, you’re never going to lose me.”
I placed my hands on his wrists, more tears streaming down my face. “Do you promise?”
He nodded, quickly. “I promise. I have to kiss you stupid for the rest of our lives.”
I chuckled through my tears, sighing. “I like it when you kiss me stupid.”
~~~
I couldn’t tell you how long Steve and I held each other in the RV before the sun started to set. Everyone pretty much sat in the same seats we were all in before. Shit was getting real and our situation was starting to set in as we drove to the Creel house to drop off Max, Lucas and Erica so that they could execute their part of the plan.
Feeling Steve’s eyes on me, I looked over at him, giving a shy smile, the words “I love you” being whispered from his lips. I whispered them back before sighing.
This was going to be a long night.

Who will die in ST5 - an analysis
Something I know I’ll already be asked running this account is, who will die and who will live?
Hoppers a goner, he will die saving El or Joyce.
Steve. He will also die saving/for someone, that being Nancy and Robin. In season four he clearly still has feelings for Nancy.
Max wont DIE, but be blind, Lucas will help her out in doing daily tasks, which is probably going to be the happiest part of this season.
Will Byers. I have made a whole post on why Will HAS to die. He doesn’t die because he slipped up, he learns he has to die to kill Vecna. ⬇️
Following that, Vecna’s obviously got to die, but not before Will. Not before he kills a good portion of people.
There’s not really much reason to keep Murray alive except for the fact that Joyce will lose her kid and her love interest, so I think he will live.
Robin will get seriously injured, but not die.
Eleven will do what Henry did in the 50’s and while defeating Vecna she will overuse her powers resulting in a coma, she will wake up and have vision unlike Max.
Mike and Dustin will live, I feel like they won’t kill Lucas, since he’s Max’s support right now, however he could die saving Max. (Like I said, she’ll probably be blind)
And no, Eddie won’t be resurrected. Sorry.
Feel free to ask questions since I’m more than happy to answer huns!! 🖤

Made myself sad thinking about how Stancy was always doomed by the narrative and never got a fair chance at being together. Their peers were so against them dating. Barb was really trying to talk Nancy out of going to Steve's party and warning her to be careful of him. Jonathan was gaslighting Nancy for dating a "one-time jock" because he thought she wasn't like all the other girls 🙄 Tommy and Carol were making fun of Steve for wanting to date a girl like Nancy and teasing him for catching feelings for her. Karen and Ted were very anxious about Nancy's choice to date Steve. Mike found Steve to be annoying and Lucas even considered him to be a douchebag. Literally not one person was on their side. And then we add the Upside Down to that, and they even had freaking Vecna against them! Honestly, I feel bad that Steve and Nancy weren't allowed the grace to just be silly teens together who had a crush on each other and wanted to take a chance on one other. They had so many outside forces trying to control them and their feelings for one another *cough* creepy Murray included *cough* and yet, somehow they always find their way back to each other in every season. They really had all these obstacles thrown at them, and still can't be kept apart.

The Vanishing of Will Byers (Part 2 of 2)
Synopsis: Set between the events of Seasons 1-2, this comic chronicles tales from various Hawkins residents as they attempt to survive the daily grind while also dealing with lurking threats hidden beneath the town.......
Observations:
One of the reasons I've expressed interest in the Stranger Things comics and tie-ins is because I see them as an opportunity to expand more on characters, storylines, and other mytharc elements. It's a well of untapped potential that makes for good reading material.
To their credit, they have done this with some tie-ins/comics.
With others...........for whatever reason (whether it's lack of imagination, or being kept on a creative short leash by Netflix and the Duffer Brothers), they've turned out some real disappointments. These range from stories that are contradictory to the show's canon, to focusing on characters that no one cares about (and are likely NOT going to have any important roles in S5), to simply rehashing plots/character arcs that have been done to death without offering anything new to the table, or simply failing to take advantage of characters who have been introduced (i.e. Argyle, Colonel Sullivan, Vickie, Gareth, etc).
In that regard, Tales from Hawkins is a mixed bag. It's an anthology comic composed of 4 different stories. Two of them focus on main characters (Murray and Robin) whereas the other two are about minor Hawkins characters from the show who have dangerous encounters with the Upside Down. The ideas explored in these stories support the show's themes, but the way certain stories were executed left a lot to be desired.
As usual, I will be splitting this review into 4 parts, with each one covering a different Issue from the comic:
Part 1: Dale and Henry
For those who don't remember, Dale and Henry (no, not Henry Creel) were the hunters who disappeared in S1 and were later confirmed dead at the hands of the Demogorgon. We saw them briefly at Benny's Diner, but the audience was only informed about their gruesome fates later.
This is the story from their perspective.
LSS: Both of them were out in the woods "hunting," saw a trail of bleeding animal carcasses, decided to continue investigating in spite of all the warnings that this was a BAD IDEA, encountered something they shouldn't have........and you know the rest.
The artwork for this story is haunting. In addition to capturing the beauty of Hawkins at sunset and the dark horrors of the Upside Down, the pictures manage to convey a sense of gruesomeness and dread as Henry and Dale follow the Demogorgon's trail of destruction:
In some ways, it reminds me of the first Predator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In that story, Arnold played a character name Alan "Dutch" Schaefer who was part of a military team that discovers corpses during their mission in the jungle. When the Predator arrives, it starts picking off the team one-by-one until Dutch is forced to face the monster in a showdown.
The biggest differences between Predator and this Issue are 1.) Neither Henry nor Dale are military trained, and they certainly aren't the expert hunters they portray themselves as (which the comic spells out):
And 2.) Unlike the movie, where there was at least a chance for Dutch to fight off the Predator........that ain't the case for Henry:
All of which brings me to my first problem with this particular story: Because we already know the fates of Dale and Henry before they happen, it becomes hard to get invested. TV tropes even has a name for this called Too Bleak, Stopped Caring where things are so awful for the characters (or the audience knows things are going to end badly) that readers/viewers emotionally tune out and become apathetic to what's happening. This isn't the same thing as the Eight Deadly Words (I don't care what happens to these characters), but it comes close to that.
It doesn't help that the comic doesn't do much to flesh-out Dale or Henry. We get a brief snippet about how Henry's wife Val is undergoing chemo and how Dale has grandkids, but that's it. It's useless trivia which doesn't factor into the situation taking place, and it still doesn't get me to care. I'm not saying I need to hear their life stories, but you gotta give me more than that.
Adding onto this, there are continuity errors that were hard to ignore. The comic states that Henry and Dale's fatal trip into the woods takes place a few hours after Benny's death, which would mean this would've occurred on November 8th. However, in the show, Hopper is informed by Powell and Callahan on November 11th that Henry and Dale disappeared into the woods the day before, which means the fatal hunting trip would've had to happen on November 10th. I watched the show and took notes on the days certain events occurred, so I know what I'm talking about.
Jody Houser was the writer for all 4 anthology tales, and this isn't the first time she's made continuity mistakes like this. She did the same thing in SIX when she wrote Terry breaking into the lab to rescue El as taking place in 1978 in spite of it being confirmed by people working on the show that this actually took place in 1974. She also did this in two other stories she wrote ("The Game Master" and Dungeons & Dragons) when it came to Will being in the hospital after his time in the Upside Down. "The Game Master" claims Will was discharged from the hospital before Thanksgiving, whereas Dungeons & Dragons contradicts this by depicting him as still in the hospital after Thanksgiving.
I was willing to overlook these errors early on (let's not forget the Duffer Brothers blunder in forgetting Will's Birthday was on March 22nd), but this has gotten to the point of being ridiculous. If fans are able to better keep track of dates than paid writers can, that's a problem that needs to be fixed pronto.
Despite my issues though, I will give credit where credit is due in that Jody Houser kept one thing consistent: Will finding a dying Henry in the UD and comforting him in his final moments. This is an event that also took place in her other comic, The Other Side:
It's a small moment, but a heartwarming one which highlights Will's empathy and willingness to look out for others, and I'm glad it was kept in.
Part 2: Murray Bauman
I know fan opinions about Murray are all over the place. Some like him, some hate him, and some are completely indifferent to him. I'm in the third category.
I've never hated Murray, but out of all the main characters, he is the one who could die and I wouldn't bat an eye. I've never connected with him the same way I did with other characters, and he's always felt like an outlier in regards to his relationships with everyone else. Even Erica (who's been a controversial character for certain fans) has had more organic interactions with the others, as well as a subtle but effective character arc on her part that's been interesting to watch. Murray doesn't have that, and has pretty much remained the same person he's been since his introduction in S2.
It doesn't help that there are times Murray comes across more as a convenient plot device to make certain events happen. For instance, I've never liked how he acted as matchmaker for Jonathan/Nancy in S2 and Hopper/Joyce in S3. Whenever the show wrote him that way, it always felt like he became the writers mouthpiece for which romantic relationships they were shilling, which is something that annoyed me. Even Murray coincidentally speaking Russian came off as a quick and easy way to bypass the language barrier and all the other plot-related hiccups the other characters would've struggled with during the Russian arc in Seasons 3-4 had he not been present.
So when they announced that one of the stories would focus on Murray, I was genuinely interested because I was hoping we'd get more insight into his character, mindset, and backstory that wasn't just about him getting the other main characters from point A to point B. In some areas, this Issue delivered on that.
The story takes place after the events of season 1 when Murray comes to Hawkins after being hired by Barbara's parents to investigate her disappearance.
From there, it follows Murray integrating himself into the Hawkins community, picking up tips and clues, and spinning his own theories that would eventually lead him to discovering the truth about Eleven, Barb's death, Will's disappearance, Hawkins Lab, and (of course) the Upside Down.
For whatever problems I have with Murray, I do appreciate how the comic depicts what he's doing as authentic "investigative journalism" as opposed to depicting him as a conspiracy theorist who just happened to stumble on the truth and have his claims validated. I knew they likely wouldn't go that route since he's established on the show as working for the Chicago-Sun Times (which gives his character credibility) but considering we're currently living in a climate where peddling unfounded conspiracy theories is a thing (whether it's from right-winged pundits like Tucker Carlson or Alex Jones, groups like QAnon, or even Leftist antisemites spewing blood libel, Holocaust inversion/revisionism, Hilter apologism, and a bunch of other antisemitic garbage designed to hurt the Jewish community), it's refreshing to see Murray putting in the hard work of researching instead of spouting unfounded claims and trying to act like the smartest person in the room. There are certain Tumblr users who could take a leaf out of Murray's book instead of falling into this pattern:
(Credit to @sethshead for posting this quote because this really sums up the problem with Conspiracy Theorists in a nutshell.)
But I digress. My point is this story gives me new respect for Murray over the weeks and months he spent investigating and chasing down leads despite how tough it was:
Additionally, the comic goes out of its way to paint Murray as a crusader for the truth, but it's also heavily implied that the reason he makes work his life is because, deep down, he is lonely. While he claims he's only interested in integrating himself into the Hawkins community (including signing up for an "all ages" Karate class) for the purposes of the investigation, there are hints that he actually wants human connection, and that he's miserable when left by himself:
This is an interesting angle to Murray, and one that recontextualizes his relationship with Joyce, Hopper, and the other main characters. He makes himself off-putting (whether as a defense mechanism, or as part of his job) and may not know how to go about socializing in a way that doesn't make him seem unpleasant, but he clearly does value these friendships and getting to spend time with the others. I still remember Murray having the strongest reaction to Alexei's death in S3 after hanging out with him at the carnival and buying him a corn dog........only to watch Alexei get shot:
I'll admit I never cared much for Alexei, but the fact that any potential friendship between him and Murray got snuffed out in this moment hits hard.
The story doesn't leave a lot of clues about what direction Murray's character will take in season 5, but I'm inclined to believe that Murray will be one of the casualties in the fight against Vecna, especially if the writers plan on upping the stakes by killing off important characters. As far as Murray's arc is concerned, he's fulfilled his role of getting Hawkins Lab shut down, ending the Russian infiltration of Hawkins in S3, and helping Joyce rescue Hopper from Kamchatka in S4. As to where they could go with Murray in the last season, I see two possible scenarios:
1.) The Russians/KGB come back to Hawkins in S5 to take revenge against Hopper, Joyce, and Murray for destroying their operation in Kamchatka, and to possibly get more UD monsters from the now-opened gate in Hawkins. This could lead to Murray having a role in stopping the Russians once and for all. If the writers decide to bring back Enzo/Dmitiri (please make that happen) or even Yuri, they could have Murray form a comradery with either character, which I wouldn't mind seeing.
2.) Murray will play some kind of role in keeping the government (primarily Colonel Sullivan) off El's back as she deals with Vecna's impending invasion.
Either way, I'm predicting things are going to end badly for him.
Part 3: Robin
I'm just gonna say it: This was my least favorite Issue out of all 4 of them.
The story focuses on Robin working on a class project where she's a writer/director for a horror film starring Tammy Thompson. During all of this, Robin is pining after Tammy, expressing her frustration with Tammy's shallow crush on Steve (as well as Steve's douchebag behavior), and struggling internally with being a lesbian in good old 1980s homophobic Hawkins.
Sounds familiar? That's because both Zombie Boys and the Rebel Robin book/podcast already covered these ideas and plot points. Zombie Boys was about Will and his friends making a horror movie that was a metaphor for Will's unresolved trauma/PTSD (similar to how Robin's horror movie is a metaphor for feeling trapped in Hawkins and never breaking free), and Rebel Robin already explored Robin's crush on Tammy, her initial dislike of Steve, her desire to graduate high school and leave Hawkins for good, and her coming to terms with the fact she likes girls and how revealing this would turn her into a social pariah.
Look, I like Robin and I find value in her story, especially as someone like me who identifies as gay and lives in a small conservative town where you keep your mouth shut about certain things. However, this tale isn't breaking new ground here. It's just retreading the same story beats without offering anything we haven't seen before. Rebel Robin already did this, and did it so much better.
If they really wanted to make Robin the centerpiece for this particular Issue, why not cover something different? We could have gotten a story about Robin and Steve working at the Video Rental Store, or Robin telling Steve about "Operation Croissant" and inviting him to come with her to Europe once she saves up enough money and graduates. There were even opportunities to explore her relationship with other characters outside of Steve, the Scoops Troop, and Tammy. They did this with Robin and Nancy in S4 (which was one of my favorite character pairings from that season) and Lucas on the Line even had Robin and Lucas forming a close friendship as Lucas was struggling to figure his life out, so I don't see why they couldn't have done this for other characters that Robin hasn't gotten much screentime with. Hell, since they're already planning to push Robin and Vickie as endgame for S5, why not have a story about Robin first meeting Vickie?
Better yet, since this is an anthology comic that's supposed to focus on various characters, why not go more in depth with others? Jason. Patrick. Chrissy. Fred. Vickie. Scott Clarke. Dr. Owens. There's a plethora of other characters from the show who could be (and deserve to be) expanded on as opposed to a character like Robin who's already had an entire book and podcast dedicated to her. We could even be covering main characters like Jonathan (do a comic showing how he met Argyle and became friends with him), or Steve for that matter. I would rather see a story about Steve, his internal perspective on the events from the show, his relationship with his parents, or something that ISN'T just rehashing this again:
WE. GET. IT. Steve was an asshole at the beginning. This is not news. Please stop exploring Steve's character from this angle, and actually do something original with him.
This isn't the first time I've expressed my frustration about this. My review of The Bully was equally scathing about how they dedicated an entire graphic novel to two loathsome characters while pushing other characters with potentially interesting arcs/perspectives to the side. It frustrates me to see writers/creators retread old ground that the audience has long grown tired of. I like the comics and tie-in materials, and I am more than happy to defend them from fans who consider them a waste of time, but that doesn't mean I'm above calling out the material if it's not contributing anything meaningful.
Part 4: The Pumpkin Patch Rivalry
This one pleasantly surprised me. I wasn't expecting to care about the story, and I wasn't as big of a fan of the artwork (especially in comparison to the first 3 stories which, in spite of their flaws, were colorful and well-drawn). Regardless of that nitpick though, I ended up embracing it. I would even go as far to say that this is my favorite Issue out of the 4 of them.
The story takes place in season 2, and centers on Merrill Wright and Eugene McCorkle, the two Pumpkin Patch owners who briefly appeared at Hopper's precinct to accuse the other of sabotaging their fields, which would later lead Hopper to investigate and discover the Upside Down spreading underneath Hawkins.
The comic expands on Eugene and Merrill's history, revealing there's always been a family rivalry between the Wrights and the McCorkle, starting from harmless pranks that eventually turned hurtful:
Furthermore, the story puts a heavy emphasis on how the rivalry is rooted in the patriarchs of the families as opposed to every individual member from one family hating the the members of the other family.
All of this cultivates with the destruction of their pumpkin patches, the two men confronting each other on a decaying field, a vicious fight breaking out.......and both men getting more than they bargained for:
While the story is simple on the surface, it struck a chord with me given recent world events. I know this particular Issue was written a month before the October 7th Massacre and the Israel-Hamas War, and the fictional rivalry between Eugene and Merrill pales in comparison to the real life horrific onslaught that is occurring in this conflict, but for me, it was hard not to see some parallels between Merrill and Eugene's years of bitterness and anger over their rivalry vs the decades worth of grudges, wars, bloody conflicts, massacres, old wounds, and hatred that has festered between Israelis and Palestinians and exploded in the worst possible way. Eugene and Merrill thankfully stop short of trying to murder one another (or targeting rival family members), but it very easily could have gone in that direction. Hatred is a powerful emotion that leads to tragedy.
And just like with those in Israel and Palestine who desperately want peace and are sick of the decades of fighting and their respective governments falling down the pipeline of extremism while continuing to destroy more lives, the members of both the Wright and McCorkle families want their respective conflict to end.
The difference is that Merrill and Eugene get that opportunity to mend fences, but it takes them being put in a life-threatening situation and almost dying at the hands of demodogs before that happens:
Stories like this give me hope that things can change for the better. That people can put aside grudges and old wounds and be there for one another when it really counts. We need stories like this more than ever, especially with how scary the worlds gotten and how people who put on a mask of being "tolerant" and "progressive" and "looking out for the well-being of others" have revealed themselves to be just as hateful, cruel, hypocritical, patronizing, and vicious as those they claim to oppose.
Eugene and Merrill may have started their rivalry over pettiness, but when the chips were down, they were willing to put that aside and work to fix relationships and create a better future for their families:
Regardless of how they acted, or how they started out, I have more respect for them as opposed to certain people in REAL LIFE who are pushing their own agendas, spreading lies, misinformation, and conspiracy theories, and intentionally creating strife and conflict while pretending to give a shit about peace. Those who follow this blog know exactly who I'm referring to.
While I doubt Eugene and Merrill will appear in season 5, their arc about redemption and overcoming old prejudices might factor into the arc regarding the Hawkins residents in the last season. The show has spent multiple seasons showing the inherent problems in Hawkins, from the rampant bullying, to the bigotry, to the government corruption, to how quickly neighbors will turn on one another out of fear and paranoia. Season 4 emphasized this heavily with the Witch Hunt against the Hellfire Club and the desire to create scapegoats (like Eddie and El) for the town's problems without the townsfolk doing the hard work of self-reflection and changing for the better. If the behind-the-scenes pictures for Season 5 are any indicator, it's about to get worse:
I don't think there's any question about whether Vecna will be defeated (he will). The questions are how much damage he'll cause, how many lives he'll ruin in the process, and how the citizens of Hawkins could enable him to get as far as he does. Vecna may be the cause of the main characters' problems, but even if he wasn't there and had never existed, the reality is Hawkins has a personal nastiness rooted in the community that has made life miserable for a lot of people, especially those who don't fit the town's definition of "normal."
Vecna's greatest weapon isn't just his powers, but his ability to see the ugliness in people, and weaponize fear and all the inherent wrongs of society to isolate people so he can pick them off one-by-one. He reminds me of the Joker from The Dark Knight, who thrived on chaos and was determined to show everything wrong with humanity, and even Sauron from The Silmarillion, who exploited the problems and prejudices the kingdom of Numenor had so he could drive them to destruction. Vecna hates Hawkins and despises humanity. What makes him terrifying isn't his army of monsters, but his ability to bring out the worst in people to the point they become the monsters.
Getting back to the story of Eugene and Merrill, their arc about redemption, forgiveness, and working to unify rather than divide is the antidote needed to combat Vecna. If I predict anything, it's this: The battle against Vecna isn't just going to depend on the actions of the main characters, but the action of the Hawkins residents. Some of them have chosen to flee for their own safety, but others will be caught in this conflict, and they will have to make hard choices to either let go of old biases/prejudices that are causing harm, or continue holding on to them out of stubborn pride and allow Vecna to divide them in doing so.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, while this comic had some good elements, it was disappointing in many areas. Like I said, I'm open to exploring the stories of the townsfolk of Hawkins (and other characters), but the way it was done with some of these stories wasn't impressive.
If you still want to check out the comic for yourself, I recommend Issue 2 (Murray's story) and Issue 4 (The Pumpkin Patch Rivalry). Other than that, you're not missing anything by skipping it.
