The Immovable Ladder of Jerusalem

At first glance, it seems like an ordinary wooden ladder, but this small object beneath a window of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has remained untouched for centuries.

Known as the Immovable Ladder, its story is deeply tied to the status quo agreement governing this sacred site.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is shared by six Christian denominations — Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox, and Syriac Orthodox.

Since 1852, the status quo agreement has ensured that no changes can be made to the church’s structure or furnishings without unanimous consent from all six groups.

This fragile balance of power has preserved peace within the church but has also left the ladder untouched for over 250 years.

Whether a symbol of unity or division, the ladder remains frozen in time, a quiet reminder of the delicate compromises that hold the world’s most sacred spaces together.

Untouched (ATS 2.04)

Untouched was...heavy.

Lilah is still trying desperately to escape Lindsey's shadow and Darla catches her looking through his things. She doesn't even think Lindsey would be annoyed but rather expectant of this behavior.

Darla: There is nothing so lovely as dreams. Everything is in them, everything hidden. Open those chambers and you can truly understand someone - and control them. Lilah: And what's hidden in Angel's secret chambers? Darla: Horrors.

Lilah's conversation with Darla helps her to manipulate Bethany, a young girl she's attempting to recruit for her telekinetic powers. Bethany is tormented with dreams of her father because Lilah wants to make her an assassin (trauma activates her powers).

She hires rapists to attack Bethany and Cordelia gets a vision of it. Bethany kills her attackers and meets Angel.

Meanwhile, Cordelia is still taking her mission to protect Gunn seriously. She's decided paying him will help.

Cordelia: No think. Pay. That's an order. Angel: Hey! How about we pretend that you work for me? Cordelia: You are really unpleasant when you… Angel: Then why don't we pretend that you don't. Cordelia: You can't fire me. I'm vision girl.

Angel continues to struggle with sleep. He sleeps all day and then claims he's exhausted after being up for three hours.

When they get Bethany back to the Hyperion Cordelia notices a "vibe" and Wesley knows telekinesis is associated with early trauma. They realize Bethany was raped by her father as a child. Her relationship with men is so messed up I'm surprised she was able to trust Angel at all. She tries to understand his kindness by propositioning him, calling herself a "slut".

Angel: You wanna make love but you don't want to be touched?

Bethany cringes at the emotional language (this reminds me of Faith's feelings around Riley). She says she goes away when men touch her and once they're done she comes back and cleans up the mess. They don't notice. The trauma in this episode was really intense.

Cordelia is more wary of Bethany. She's afraid of her panicked decisions typically being murderous instead of merciful, and she sees the way she looks at Angel. Bethany seems to take the advice and think about her actions. When Lilah panics and sends Bethany's father to her she's able to control her power and not kill him. Not feeling the yay factor there.

I loved the moment she left Lilah's and would love to see Bethany again.

Character Notes:

Cordelia Chase: She was in the top 10% of her class, which Wesley does not believe.
