II: The Three Legacies and their Connection to the Sanctuary
Sticky notes at the top of the page:
3 legacies
Misthallery’s Garden of Healing, Ambrosa’s City of Harmony, The Infinite Vault of Akbadain
All of them are in their control!
Having existed for at least 1 million years prior to modern society, the Azran were a vast, world-wide civilization, and many of the mysteries surrounding this civilization remain unsolved. How and why did such an advanced civilization built by the Azran vanish so abruptly from the forefront of of history? The key to unlocking the proof of this civilization lies in the Azran ruins mentioned by Donald Rutledge in “Ancient Histories”. Namely, three sites known as the known as the “legacies”.
These three legacies are of importance, as they are thought to embody the values of the Azran Civilization. During his worldwide search for Azran ruins, Dr Rutledge found three reoccurring words amongst the artefacts: “healing”, “harmony” and “infinity”, and identified the three sites – the “legacies” – which were constructed to be embodiments of these three concepts. In addition to these “legacies”, exists a “sanctuary” which could be called the centre of Azran society, indicating that… (page cuts off).. these three… Azran Civilization…

Sticky note: Should I refrain from mentioning Aurora’s existence in my paper?
Lined page: At the dawn Of time. the world was one big continent, and the Celestial King sheltered all the lands beneath his ample wings. All living things served him. The king had five children, the Great Riders of the Sky, but they were proud and coveted their father’s throne. The constant warring Of the Riders exhausted the people and tainted the land.
Roused at last to anger, the king drew his sword and made four strokes, slicing the land into ten continents. His children.. He banished them to live on Earth
Unable to sit back and watch, the King used his sword and made four slices, dividing the land into ten continents and banished his sons to the earth. The king sealed the sacred gates to the skies and scattered the five keys on earth, that his children might one day find them. -> Eggs?
Ever since that day. the king’s children have gazed up at the skies, longing to fly again one day.

III: The Scattered Ruins as Azran Systems
The excavated ruins show that the concepts of “healing” “harmony” and “infinity” were highly revered by the ancient Azran people. According to “Ancient Histories”, each of these concepts encapsulates the knowledge and technology of the Azran Civilization. “Healing” controls the life of living organisms, and “harmony” controls the environment in which they live. The third, “infinity”, though difficult to believe, involves a device that supposedly generates infinite amounts of energy. By use of these technologies, the Azran are said to have built a civilization unparalleled by any other in human history. My own fieldwork, appears to support this. We have found, for example, sluices and wind-controlling devices which may have served as systems to regulate the “harmony” of the surrounding environment.

IV: Purpose of the Eggs
In “Ancient Histories” there are several references to mysterious egg relics, found scattered amongst Azran ruins. Based on Dr Rutledge’s research, it may be that that these Eggs function somehow as a key to the Azran’s central sanctuary. …(cut off)… because of the attention on this relic, worldwide…
For example, Hoogland is famous for its belief in the dragonlord, the folklore of which has been the subject of much research. Interestingly, this village also has a tradition tied to “egg” relics, with a related shrine that contained a wind-control mechanism, believed to belong to the Azran.
In addition to being a famous tourist trap, San Grio… (cut off) … objects called “popoños”…

Voynich Manuscript -
The Voynich manuscript is an enigmatic and mysterious book that has puzzled researchers, linguists, and cryptographers for centuries. Named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who acquired it in 1912, the manuscript is believed to have been created in the early 15th century. It is named after him because he played a significant role in popularizing and bringing attention to the manuscript.
The Voynich manuscript is written on vellum (animal skin) and contains around 240 pages of text and illustrations. It is written in an unknown script that has not been deciphered, making it one of the most famous and enduring unsolved mysteries in the field of cryptography. The script consists of unusual characters and symbols arranged in a structured manner, resembling a written language, but one that remains unintelligible to researchers.
Accompanying the text are numerous illustrations of various plants, astronomical diagrams, astrological symbols, and surreal scenes featuring naked women bathing in pools or interacting with mysterious tubes and machinery. The botanical drawings, in particular, depict plants that do not resemble any known species, adding to the intrigue surrounding the manuscript.
Over the years, many theories have emerged about the origins and purpose of the Voynich manuscript. Some hypotheses suggest it was an elaborate hoax or an encrypted code containing valuable information, such as alchemical or herbal knowledge. Others propose that it is a constructed language or an unknown natural language. However, despite numerous attempts by scholars and cryptographers to decipher the text, no consensus has been reached regarding its meaning or origin.
The Voynich manuscript has been studied extensively by researchers, including codebreakers during World War II, professional cryptographers, and historians. It has been carbon-dated, confirming its medieval origin, and has undergone various forms of analysis, such as linguistic, statistical, and computational methods. However, no breakthroughs have occurred that definitively unlock the mysteries contained within its pages.
The manuscript is currently housed at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University, where it remains a subject of ongoing research and public fascination. Despite the lack of progress in deciphering its contents, the Voynich manuscript continues to captivate imaginations and stands as a testament to the enduring power of unsolved mysteries.

three ships - dorian/iron bull (dragon age) is the ship of dreams, all of my favorite things in one, the ship that pushed me to try new things in writing and brought some of my dearest friends into my life - deacon/maccready (fallout) is the ship that hit me so hard I had to write two novels about it. it has antagonism, it has unexpected common ground, it has tension and teasing and so much potential left wide open to play with. - hawke/fenris (dragon age) is the ship that got me seriously writing. it's one of the most compelling, carefully crafted, and honest romances in the series. the struggle, the pining, the patience and care and badass battle couple-ness of it all... I've never successfully played another romance in DA2, fenris is it for me
first ship - i guess sailor moon/tuxedo mask? it's the first ship that made me seek out fan work.
last song - "starburned and unkissed" by caroline polachek from the i saw the tv glow soundtrack
last movie - in theaters, trap. i'm not usually a big shyamalan fan but it was entertaining, best use of instagram live in a thriller for sure. - at home, wicked little letters. a lot of fun, a small town england drama set just after world war ii about mysterious swear-laden letters getting sent around town. olivia coleman is a treasure in everything she does.
currently reading - honestly just re-reading all my favorite dorian/iron bull fanfic classics as I replay dragon age: inquisition
currently watching - i'm visiting family right now and they have a channel that shows nothing but old unsolved mysteries episodes and it's so comfortingly nostalgic I just keep it on any time I'm in the room I'm staying in

Ghosts of the Queen Mary
On May 27, 1936, the RMS Queen Mary set sail from Southampton, England, completing her maiden voyage in New York just a few days later. For the next three years, the ship was the height of luxury, transporting such notable passengers as Clark Cable, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, and Winston Churchill. Its elaborate facilities included two indoor swimming pools, beauty salons, libraries, tennis courts, and more. However, the luxurious amenities didn’t last.
In 1939, the Queen Mary was stripped down and began service as a World War II troop transport ship. For the next eight years, the ship hauled tens of thousands of servicemen across the sea, earning the nickname the Grey Ghost due to its color and speed. After the war ended, the Queen Mary was refitted for passenger travel and again served as a luxury liner until retiring from service in 1967.
Now permanently moored in Long Beach, California, the Queen Mary serves as a popular tourist attraction, complete with restaurants, a museum, and a hotel. Legend has it the historic ship is also haunted by the men, women, and children who died aboard.
A little girl named Jackie reportedly haunts the second-class swimming pool. Legend has it she drowned there, though there are no historical records of such an event. Nevertheless, staff and visitors report seeing a child’s ghostly figure near the pool. An elderly woman in black and white also haunts the area.
On October 2, 1942, the Queen Mary accidentally rammed and sank her escort ship, the HMS Curacoa, as she carried over 10,000 troops to Europe. More than 200 men died in the collision, and now Queen Mary staff and visitors reportedly hear strange sounds coming from the ship’s bow.
In 1988, a former marine engineer told Unsolved Mysteries he once heard the sound of water pouring into the Queen Mary. Thinking there had been a rupture of some kind, the man rushed to investigate but found nothing unusual. The engineer later learned he’d been in the part of the ship that had collided with the Curacoa. Unsolved Mysteries also left a voice-activated recorder in the same area and reportedly captured the sounds of rushing water, tearing metal, and crying men.
A man named John Peddler reportedly haunts the lower area of the ship. It seems John was crushed by Door 13 during a routine drill and now lingers near the site of his death. The legend got its start after witnesses claimed to see a bearded man in blue overalls disappear in front of the ill-fated door.
According to a plaque on the ship, at least 16 crew members died on the Queen Mary, succumbing to everything from tetrachloride poisoning to a fall from the gangway. Some reports place the total number of deaths, including passengers and servicemen, at 49. Is it possible the men, women, and children who died aboard still roam the ship today? Or are the stories nothing more than fanciful legends?

Genre: Fiction, Adult, Mystery Thriller
Rating: 2 out of 5
Content Warning: Death of a parent, violence, gun violence, on page death, death, murder
Summary:
Neeve Kearny may be the only person in New York worried about the disappearance of Ethel Lambston. Ethel, a bestselling author famous for her juicy exposés, is one of the best customers at Neeve's exclusive Madison Avenue boutique. But Ethel's ex-husband, her parasitical nephew, and the fashion moguls skewered in her latest article all have reason to be glad she's no longer around.
When Ethel Lambston is found with her throat cut, Neeve's memories of her mother's long-unsolved murder loom up once again. Now as an innocent witness in the Lambston investigation, Neeve is drawn into a new nightmare...a sinister labyrinth of greed and ambition that will lead her into mortal danger...
A stunning tale of murder, glamour and romance, While My Pretty One Sleeps is the most exciting novel yet from Mary Higgins Clark, America's undisputed master of suspense
*Opinions*
Sometimes you just need a mass-market paperback to cleanse your palate. Unfortunately, this is not one of Mary Higgins Clark’s best books and I felt extremely dissatisfied with the mystery, story, and characters. There were also certain things that were added to this novel that had me side-eyeing Clark pretty hard. At the end of the day, it didn’t feel like a mystery or a thriller, but like reading the script of a procedural without all the nuance and emotion that the actors would put into it when they put it on the screen. This is a two-star read and that is more for craft than the fact that I enjoyed my time with this novel.
While My Pretty One Sleeps focuses on Neeve and Myles Kearny, Neeve owns a fashion boutique that caters to the higher end of town and her father Myles is the retired police commissioner of New York City and recovering from a heart attack. When one of Neeve’s most eccentric clients doesn’t pick up her order, Neeve starts to dig into if something has happened to the journalist Ethel Lambston. As Neeve attempts to confirm whether Ethel has left or if something has happened to her, she also learns that Ethel has learned a huge bombshell about the fashion industry and is about to publish a book about it. Suddenly, there are a number of potential motives for people to want Lambston to disappear.
My biggest issue with this novel is that there was no suspense for the reader. We know that Ethel is dead literally hundreds of pages before anyone else, besides the killer, does. While Neeve has a bad feeling about Ethel’s disappearance, she keeps getting talked out of it by her father, and everyone else she shares her fears. If the reader also didn’t know that she was dead, it wouldn’t have been so frustrating, but the “oh she’s probably just left” for that long is just grating. None of these characters are super likable or even that you are worried about what will happen to them. The Red Herring was so obvious that it was obviously not them, but we stayed with them for so long in this story. I also don’t think that there were enough clues to point to the actual killer, which makes the payoff seem pretty cheap.
Some more fine details that pulled me out of the story. The number of times that Neeve’s skin was described as “milk-white” started to veer into more than just a descriptor. Then there are all these individuals who wear super high-end clothes making extremely derogatory comments about the homeless in New York City. Then there was the anti-union sentiment that was always attached to the “bad” guys in the novel, but it is never challenged on the page. That, pared with the fact that the fact is made that both Neeve and Ethel vote Republican in a none political thriller was out of place and honestly, made me have a lot of questions about Clark. Don’t even get me started on the fact that the grand love story in this novel, the two of them met while one was fighting in World War II and the other was a TEN-YEAR-OLD CHILD. I will be here all day. The instant love between Jack and Neeve was so flat and they had no chemistry. An even smaller complaint, Neeve called her father by his first name. I don’t know a single adult who does that.
Overall, it was an easy and quick read, but not very enjoyable for me. I have liked a number of other works by Clark, which made this even more disappointing. A two star read and better luck next time.

Kind of a weird question but I'm out of ideas but if you had a time machine, which historical period would you have loved to experience?,If you don't want to answer such a strange question, that's ok but I would love to hear your thoughts
I don't mind at all, I love random questions, keep them coming please if you have more!! 😁
Past centuries sound intriguing and I'd love to have witnessed different moments in time like the start of the universe or follow around Jack the Ripper to find out his identity or attend a Beethoven or Mozart or Queen concert, go to France to watch the Dancing Plaque, travel to the year 0 to see who that hobo Jesus really was and why people are still talking about him today, find out what happened to the colony of Roanoke or what caused the Tunguska Event. You know, simply solve unsolved mysteries and experience unique moments that will never come again.
But living in those times? I don't know... I would prefer to travel to special events instead of actually living during those times. Mostly because of the terrible sanitary standards back then, medical shortcomings and terrible diseases, and there was always a war going on somewhere. And almost all interesting historic events were wars or catastrophies (Titanic, Chernobyl, World War II, Columbus, Salem Witch trials etc.) - I'd probably die pretty quickly if I showed up then...
Furthermore, I also wouldn't mind going forward though. See what the world will look like in 100 years. Or 500 years. See where human rights are going, check out future movies and new music, and find out if humanity will still be around and if not, find out how we will kill ourselves. And maybe there's an end to it all, how will the universe die? Again, I'm all about witnessing unique events and answer questions about the future people are already wondering about today.

The Mystery of Morgan Nick: How Billy Jack Lincks Became a Person of Interest in a 27-Year-Old Cold Case
Tumblr media
Billy Jack Lincks recently gained attention due to his potential connection to the 1995 disappearance of Morgan Nick, a case that has remained unsolved for nearly three decades. Morgan, a 6-year-old girl from Alma, Arkansas, went missing on June 9, 1995, while attending a Little League baseball game with her family. She was last seen playing with other children in the parking lot when she vanished without a trace.
Who is Billy Jack Lincks?
Billy Jack Lincks was named as a person of interest in the Morgan Nick case in November 2021 by the FBI. Lincks, who passed away in prison in 2000, had a troubling criminal history. Approximately two months after Morgan's disappearance, he attempted to abduct an 11-year-old girl at a Sonic Drive-In in Van Buren, Arkansas—just eight miles from where Morgan was last seen. He was later convicted of that crime and sentenced to prison.
Before his death, Lincks was known to drive a red 1986 Chevrolet pickup truck, a vehicle similar to the one seen near the baseball field the night Morgan disappeared. Witnesses had reported seeing a red truck with a white camper shell leaving the scene around the time of Morgan's abduction. This led investigators to believe there might be a connection between Lincks and the vehicle seen that night.
The FBI's Current Investigation
The FBI has been seeking more information about Lincks' life, including his movements and connections, to understand if he had any involvement in Morgan's abduction. Authorities have asked the public to come forward with any details about him, no matter how minor they may seem. Lincks, who was a World War II veteran and retired from Braniff Airlines, lived in several areas throughout his life, including Dallas, Texas, and Van Buren, Arkansas. The FBI is particularly interested in learning more about his activities around 1995 and his interactions with people during that time.
Unanswered Questions
Despite new leads, many questions remain unanswered. Lincks was not formally charged in relation to Morgan Nick's disappearance, and investigators continue to explore other possibilities. The search for Morgan Nick has been ongoing, with the community and Morgan’s family still holding out hope for closure and answers after so many years.
If you have any information about Billy Jack Lincks or the Morgan Nick case, the FBI urges you to reach out. Every piece of information can be crucial in helping bring resolution to one of Arkansas' most enduring mysteries.

Whispers in the Snow - The Unsolved Hinterkaifeck Murders
Welcome to "The Real Crime Diary," where we explore the most intriguing and high-profile criminal cases from across the Americas.
The Hinterkaifeck Murders, occurring on March 31, 1922, at an isolated farmstead in Bavaria, Germany, remains one of the country's most haunting unsolved mysteries. The Gruber family, along with their maid Maria Baumgartner, were brutally murdered, with evidence suggesting the perpetrator stayed at the farm for days afterward, caring for the farm animals while the victims lay undiscovered. The case is marked by eerie occurrences leading up to the murders, including Andreas Gruber finding mysterious footprints in the snow, a newspaper from Munich that no one in the household had purchased, and the house keys disappearing. Despite a detailed investigation, which included questioning numerous suspects and even consulting psychics, the murders remain unsolved to this day. The Gruber family's heads were removed for forensic examination but were lost during World War II, further complicating any chances of solving the case with modern technology. The case was officially closed in 1955, although the last interrogations took place in 1986, leaving the haunting question of who committed the Hinterkaifeck murders unanswered. Listen full episode to reveal the story.

'The death of John Fitzgerald Kennedy remains to this day an unsolved mystery.
Despite the various theories and trials that exist around the figure of the former president, the absolute truth has not yet come to light and who knows if it never will. The death happened on November 22 1963.
Precedents of the JFK case
Despite the ideas put forward by Christopher Nolan in Oppenheimer, there were others who tried to tackle the assassination of the Democrat.
Oliver Stone left us a wonderful film in 1991 with JFK, in which Kevin Costner seeks at all costs the truth about the case.
Killing Kennedy, from 2013 and JFK 'Case Revisited' in 2021 were other approaches to the assassination in question. Cinema has bequeathed us several docs and Oppenheimer was the latest of these...
Who killed Kennedy?
Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, one of the key figures in the development of nuclear weapons during World War II. He is portrayed as a calculating and vengeful guy, determined to take down his enemies, in this case Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy).
But Strauss's political career was ended by three "no" votes, which prevented him from becoming US Secretary of Commerce. Who decided to change his mind, asks the film's presumed antagonist. Kennedy was one of the people who voted against Strauss being US Secretary of Commerce.
Although it is only a few seconds of film, it is an element that should not necessarily come into play.
In 'American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer', the book by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin on which he based his screenplay, nothing is said about John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Nolan is not a fool and it doesn't seem to be a light-hearted opinion, who knows if he has opened a new door in the JFK case or not.'

Hidden Pictures | Jason Rekulak | Published 2022 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
A mystery about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job in the affluent suburb of Spring Brook, New Jersey as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.
Mallory immediately loves this new job. She lives in the Maxwell’s pool house, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.
As the days pass, Teddy’s artwork becomes more and more sinister, and his stick figures steadily evolve into more detailed, complex and lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to suspect these are glimpses of an unsolved murder from long ago, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force lingering in the forest behind the Maxwell’s house.
With help from a handsome lanscaper and an eccentric neighbor, Mallory sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy - while coming to terms with a tragedy in her own past - before it’s too late.
Mallory is a 20-something year old girl trying to make her way through the world. When she should have been enjoying college, she spent years abusing prescription painkillers and heroin, eventually going to rehab and is now celebrating nearly two years sober. With the help of her sponsor, Russell, she scores an interview for a family in an affluent neighborhood in New Jersey to nanny their 5-year-old son for the summer before he is meant to start Kindergarten.
During the interview, Mallory meets Caroline, a 30-something year old psychiatrist who works for the VA hospital and her son, Teddy. Teddy immediately takes to Mallory, as does Caroline. Caroline’s husband isn’t as keen on hiring Mallory due to her history. But Mallory is offered the job. She begins a week later, moving into the Maxwell’s cottage in their backyard.
She begins working for the Maxwell’s and immediately feels like she is a part of their family. She and Teddy do creative and imaginative things together while his parents are working, and Mallory continues her sober living by keeping up with running, her outlet. She keeps in touch with Russell as well.
Things continue to go well until Mallory begins to feel like she is being watched. During her first encounter with the Maxwell’s, Teddy spoke of Anya, his imaginary friend. He drew her in drawings, and said that she spoke to him when he was in his bedroom during alonetime. Eventually, the drawings Teddy was making began to be more in depth, not just typical 5-year-old drawings. Mallory decides to learn what she could about Anya, and in her research, she learns of a woman named Annie Barrett, who lived in the cottage when it belonged to her cousin George, who lived in the mainhouse. This was in the 40s, after World War II when she came to the United States from Europe. One day, George found the cottage filled with blood, and Annie had disappeared and was never found or heard from again.
Mallory believes that Anya is trying to communiate with Teddy about what happened to her. With the help of Adrian, the landscaper who has since befriended Mallory, Mallory with the assistance of the eccentric neighbor Mitzi, try to perform a seance of sorts in order to communicate with Anya. It doesn’t end well when Mitzi accuses Mallory of pushing the communicator with her own hand, but Mallory knows that it was Anya taking over her. They’re left with a series of jumbled words that they can’t decipher, and Mitzi leaves in a fit.
The next day, Mallory accidentally falls asleep during Teddy’s quiet time and sleeps for over four hours, leaving him completely unattended in his room other than an iPad. When she awakes, her hands are covered in grime from pencils and the Maxwell’s house is covered in sketches from Anya herself. Having no way to hide it before they come home, Mallory has to be upfront about what happened and what she believes is happening in their home. The Maxwell’s are not happy, and therefore end her employment.
It isn’t until a few days later that Mallory realizes the letters do mean something, and that likely Anya couldn’t speak English as she had been an immigrant from Europe. She and Adrian go to Mitzi’s to try to get the paper she had used to write the letters down while the Maxwell’s are away with Teddy for the day. With only two days until Russell returns to gather her and bring her home to his apartment, they want to figure out the mystery that is Anya. The Maxwell’s have planned a farewell for her the next day.
When they arrive at Mitzi’s, her backdoor is left wide open and they enter, attempting to call her and figure out what happened to her. They locate the paper, and they are then confronted by the police. Unfortunately, Mitzi was found deceased in the woods behind her home, and no foul play is suspected. They give their statements to the police, and return to Mallory’s cottage. Adrian says that there is a missing piece to the puzzle, and why not allow Anya to communicate with her again. While she does, it doesn’t end up bringing anything.
The following day, Adrian says he is going to Akron, Ohio, where supposedly Anya’s daughter is living in a care facility. They part ways, and Mallory enjoys her day with the Maxwell’s all the while awaiting to hear from Adrian. When Caroline and Ted go inside to clean up from dinner, Mallory and Teddy go swimming in the pool. During this time, Adrian does return her call and shows a picture of Annie’s daughter and grandson. She learns that Annie had met her husband Willie, who was a person of color, and in those days, their relationship was seen as taboo. When she became pregnant, George disguised her discretion by creating a crime scene and Annie ran away to Ohio, where she had another child, three grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren and passed away at the age of 81.
Mallory feels like all of her efforts to find out the truth was a waste of time, and decides to end the night by helping Teddy get ready for bed. The detective from the crime scene the day before erturns and speaks with Mallory while Teddy is in the shower, but until Teddy needs her help, Mallory notices something strange. Teddy goes inside to bed, and Mallory returns to pack but decides she is going to confront the Maxwell’s when she realizes what has been happening the entire time.
Mallory tells Caroline and Ted the truth: that she knows that Teddy is actually a girl, as she had seen her in the shower, and when were they going to tell her. The Maxwell’s try to say that Teddy came out to them as transgender and prefers to be a boy, but this also strikes her as odd as Teddy prefers colors that are more feminine and girly. Mallory says that they stole Teddy, and that Anya actually means mommy in Hungarian, where Anya had hailed from. Caroline and Ted attack Mallory, and scheme to kill her and come up with a plan. Caroline confesses everything to Mallory as well: She would see Anya on the weekends with Flora, then only 2 years old. Caroline felt that Anya was neglecting the little girl, and when she saw Flora run off, she followed her with the intentions of returning her back to her mother. But this plan quickly turned sinister when Anya found Caroline with Flora. Caroline killed her, Ted buried the body and they took Flora in as their own, changing her appearance and renaming her Teddy. But, Anya’s spirit had found them, and they tried to pass her off as an imaginary friend.
Mallory is able to save Teddy and herself, and Ted and Caroline were killed in self-defense. Teddy becomes Flora again, and returns to live with her father in upstate New York. Mallory lives with Russell and remains in contact with Adrian while he finishes his last year of school. On a vacation, they go to meet Flora, though she doesn’t want to remember Mallory and the bad memories of her time in New Jersey. So, Mallory creates a book for Flora of answers to the many questions that will likely arise as she gets older, and it will be there when she is ready.
Discussion Questions
1. Have you ever experienced such a significant cultural shift as Mallory did moving from city-streets Philly to suburban sidewalks? What was your experience like? I never lived deep in the city like Mallory did in Philly. But, I did live on the outskirts of Chicago and moved to the suburbs almost 10 years ago, although it is the second biggest city in my state by population.
2. Would you have hired Mallory as your employee? Under what conditions? Absolutely. Mallory knows what she did was wrong, and was working on getting through it. I likely would have made mandatory drug tests being a stipulation for her employment, which she had obviously told the Maxwell’s she was more than happy to abide with. But other than that, much like myself, I would have let her have free reign of helping raise my children. She was very well rounded for a recovering addict.
3. Did you agree with the Maxwell’s lists of nos for raising a child? Which ones yes and which ones no? How could I say yes or no? I may not agree with a lot of them, like no red meat as we’re meat eaters in my house. But, what one parent or set of parents chooses for their children isn’t any of my business, just like what I choose to do or not do with my own children isn’t theirs.
4. What was your first indication that something was amiss in Mallory’s living/employment situation? The pictures that Teddy drew, in his own hand, depicting Anya with crosses on her eyes. While imaginary friends can manifest in a variety of forms, this in itself would have scared me to death if I were Mallory.
5. Discuss Adrian. What was his role in the story? Adrian was meant to be the one person who would remain on Mallory’s side, no matter what happened. Other than Russell of course. While Adrian didn’t take well to her lies and learning the truth about her past, he did eventually move on from this. He was essentially her cheerleader and letting her know that what she was going through was likely not her imagination and was truly happening.
6. As Mallory continued to share her experiences/suspicions with the Maxwells, did you feel she was on the right course? What could have/should have she done differently as she investigated the situation? I don’t think she was right to confront them about the photos, or to tell them what she suspected. Caroline was a psychiatrist, and she could have easily said that Mallory was losing her mind. However, without that, we never would have learned about what really happened, to either Anya or Annie Barrett.
7. Mitzi was a fantastic character. What did she add/end to the story and/or the realization of the truth? Mitzi was the neighbor nobody really wants to have, but is a good person to have around. Although she herself was using drugs, and not good for Mallory to associate with, she was helpful up until the end.
8. Discuss the symbolism of the Enchanted Forest for Mallory and Teddy. The Enchanted Forest was Teddy’s way of trying to communicate with Mallory about her past. While not directly related to the story, it was how Flora ended up with Caroline and Ted in the first place after having gotten lost in the woods in New York.
9. Did you suspect any of the truth? Who Teddy was? Anya’s true identity? The Maxwell’s role? I did not. That one completely threw me for a loop. And Caroline and Ted’s roles were equally as shocking. This novel to me had the most perfect twist ending.
10. Mallory had a gift for detecting the watchful eye of others. Do you feel like you can tell when others are watching you? Yes and no. I think we all get those moments where it feels like there are eyes on us no matter where we are. But, she seems to have a real knack for it.

Ghost Blimp: The Mystery and Missing on the L-8
On Sunday, August 16th 1942 Richard L. Johnston was going about his business. He had just finished waxing his car in Dale City, California when he looked up and saw something huge creeping out of the sky and towards his house. Suddenly it hit a utility pole, electrical wires broke sending sparks cascading down to the street, and Johnson ran into the house to protect his mother. When he came back outside there was a large group of people in the street including Fire Deputy Marshal Sean Wood and Johnston’s next door neighbor, volunteer fireman William Morris. Johnston’s car was completely hidden under a massive fold of what looked like canvas. When Johnston woke up that morning he probably didn’t expect that a blimp would land on his car that day. And yet, moments later the scene became even more bizarre.
In August 1942 the United States Navy was on high alert. Within nine months after entering World War II Japanese submarines sunk at least six Allied ships off the American west coast and shelled one of California’s largest oil drilling facilities. The fear of another attack on American soil was high and in order to keep an eye on the sea along the west coast the Navy took to the air, deploying blimps to cruise over the ocean and watch for any suspicious activity.

The blimp that landed on Johnson’s car was the L-8 airship, acquired by the Navy from the Goodyear company and commissioned on March 5, 1942. It was an excellent machine, completing over 1,000 trips and never requiring any work beyond routine maintenance. The two-man crew tasked with piloting the airship had records as impeccable as the craft itself. Lieutenant Ernest Dewitt Cody was a 1938 graduate of Annapolis and although he was only twenty-seven years old he was highly regarded with his commanding officer describing him as “one of the most capable pilots and one of the most able officers” under his command. Cody was relatively new to flying LTA (lighter-than-air) airships, but in April 1942 he proved his ability when he flew the L-8 to deliver cargo to the USS Hornet before the ship departed for Doolittle’s Raid over Tokyo. It was that trip that earned him his promotion to Lieutenant in June 1942. Ensign Charles Ellis Adams was eleven years older than Cody and had twenty years of experience flying LTA airships, but only earned his commission the day before their flight together making his trip with Cody his first flight as an officer.

Their task together was a routine anti-submarine mission, fly out from Treasure Island, patrol a fifty-mile radius of San Francisco, then head to the Farallon Islands before heading back to Treasure Island. When they left Treasure Island at 6:03am there was approximately five miles of visibility with the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance. At 7:38am Cody radioed Moffett Field and reported their location as being four miles east of the Farallon Islands. Four minutes later Moffett Field received a second message from Cody, “Am investigating suspicious oil slick—stand by.” Since an oil slick could indicate an enemy submarine below the waves it was not unusual for the airship to investigate the scene. As the L-8 descended closer to the sea its movements were seen by a fishing boat, the Daisy Gray, and a Liberty cargo ship, Albert Gallatin. Apprehensive about seeing the Navy airship creep closer to the surface of the water and then set off two flares, the ship crews pulled in their nets, manned their guns, and nervously waited to see what happened next. But, as they watched the L-8 nothing out of the ordinary happened. The blimp circled for about an hour and crews from both ships could see two men in the gondola. At approximately 9am the blimp again rose into the air and restarted its route back toward San Francisco. Everything appeared normal to the ships and spectators below, but personnel at Moffett Field were getting nervous, they had not heard a word from the L-8 since 7:42am and were not able to reestablish any communication. Two Vought OS2U Kingfisher floatplanes were sent to look for the blimp and other aircraft were asked to keep their eyes open.

At approximately 10:49am a series of blimp sightings began to roll in. A Pan American Clipper pilot reported seeing the blimp over the Golden Gate Bridge, then at 11am one of the Kingfishers spotted the L-8 three miles west of Salada Beach at approximately 2,000 feet. Although a height of 2,000 feet would typically be avoided by an airship for safety reasons, there was no indication of the ship being out of control or in danger and it began to descend. The next plane to spot the blimp, an Army P-38 pilot, also saw no indication that the airship or its crew was in any distress when it was seen near Mile Rock, seemingly on its way back to Treasure Island. Within minutes an off-duty seaman named Richard Quam saw the L-8 as he was driving along the highway between San Mateo and San Francisco and he decided to take a picture of the sight. He may have been the first person to capture that something was amiss, the blimp was now noticeably bending in the middle.
Tumblr media
The L-8 airship visible sagging as it flew over Daly City. Image via National Archives.
Things began to happen quickly. At approximately 11:15am the L-8 was seen approaching the shore of Ocean Beach in San Francisco but its motors were now silent and there was noticeable sagging. It touched down on the beach for a moment but kept moving until it hit the side of a hill, knocking off one of its 325lb depth chargers. Now carrying 300lbs less, the airship again rose, clearing the hill, and moving further inland. Thousands of people now watched as the L-8 staggered overhead obviously in peril. But, according to witnesses, the ship was not unmanned, in a later interview seventeen-year-old C.E. Taylor told reporters that as the blimp descended he was watching the cabin through his binoculars and that two men were clearly visible inside the entire time.
Finally, at 11:30am the blimp came to a clumsy rest on top of Richard Johnston’s freshly waxed car. Sirens blared and firemen surrounded the blimp, slashing it open in an attempt to save Cody and Adams inside. But, when the rescuers got to the gondola they found a scene that made no sense. The door was open, the microphone for communication was hanging from the doorway, a hat was resting on the controls, the life raft and all parachutes were still in place, but Cody and Adams were nowhere to be found.
Once the initial shock of the crash wore off a feeling of worry began to quickly take over. The L-8 was traveling an extremely visible route and was tracked and seen by hundreds of people and ships, with many reporting the same as young C. E. Taylor, that the men were visible inside the cabin. The Navy immediately launched a search for Cody and Adams and the craft was inspected for any clues to solve the disappearance. The engines were in perfect running order, the ignition switches were on, and there was four hours of fuel left. The only thing that was unusual on board was that the blimp's batteries were drained and part of the fuel supply had been dumped out with no obvious explanation why.
Tumblr media
The scene after the crash of the L-8. Image via National Archives.
For three days the shore where the blimp initially crashed and the Pacific coastline was heavily searched but there was no trace of the two missing men. A board of investigation was convened by Navy Commander Francis Connell and over the course of seven days thirty-five witnesses gave their testimony of watching the L-8 hover overhead with nothing seeming suspect. Multiple people both on land and at sea at the time reported seeing the men inside and there being no indication that they ever fell or jumped out of the gondola. In the end it was determined that "no fire, no submersion, no misconduct, and no missiles struck the L-8.” While that may have answered some questions the big one still remained, what happened on the L-8 between 7:42am and 11:15am that made two Navy officers stop communication and vanish before crashing their blimp in a residential neighborhood?
Unfortunately, there were many theories but no concrete answers to that question. Some believed it was a simple tragic accident, that a malfunction with the door led to one man falling out at a low altitude and the other following him out in an attempt to save him before they were both lost to the sea. Others proposed much more elaborate theories, that the men were secret spies, that they were lured close to the surface of the water and grabbed by enemy forces, and some even said that the men ended up killing each other by falling out of the blimp during an argument over a woman. Some guesses tried to remain optimistic, that the men fell out but they were able to swim to shore and would be found hiking back to civilization any day now. Maybe they were picked up by a passenger ship after falling from the aircraft, they just had to wait until they were returned home. But, time ticked forward and the men never reappeared. Shortly after the crash the wives of both men were told that their husbands were officially missing. It was becoming painfully obvious this was not going to change and one year after their disappearance the men were declared dead. The Navy officially classified the incident as “100% Unknown/ Undetermined.”
The L-8 was repaired and continued to be used as a training vessel until the end of World War II when it was returned to Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. It was refurbished, renamed America, and was used to broadcast sports events until it was finally retired in 1982.
Nearly eighty years after the disappearance of Lieutenant Ernest Dewitt Cody and Ensign Charles Ellis Adams there is still no official explanation as to what happened on that clear August morning over the Pacific coast
After its retirement the gondola of the L-8 was fully restored and is currently exhibited at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida.

Gabby’s Bones
In 1986, a man called "Gabby" left several of his possessions with his friend, Newel Sessions. Among the possessions was an old footlocker, which was placed and stored in a shed. Six years later, Newel opened the trunk and discovered it held the bones of a human being. He thought that they should give the remains a proper burial. However, his wife insisted that they contact the police. Before he called the police, he contacted Gabby, asking if he knew about the remains. He claimed to have no idea about any human remains in a trunk. He said that he had never opened it. He believed he bought it at a garage sale, but could not remember when or where. According to Newell, he was very surprised when he learned that a skeleton was found inside of it.
Newell contacted Sheriff John Lumley who began an investigation. From the beginning, he was suspicious of Gabby. He could not understand why he never opened the trunk before. Gabby, however, claimed that he planned on opening the trunk. Since he did not have the proper tools, he decided not to open it. Two days later, it was discovered through x-rays that a bullet was lodged in the skull. Lumley met with Gabby in order to get more information from him. He thought he had picked up the trunk in Wyoming, Iowa, Illinois or Oklahoma, although he could not be sure. He thought he may have received it in 1973, but possibly later than that. Since the old trunk and lock were from the 1930s and older than Gabby, Newell was convinced that Gabby was not guilty of any murder. However, Lumley believes that he has knowledge of the person's identity. On March 31, 1992, the bones were turned over to the Wyoming State Crime Lab who created a facial reconstruction of the man. The man possibly lost his life sometime after 1908 when the bullet was available. The old trunk might have been used by someone in the U.S. Armed Services between World War I and World War II. A bag for the supermarket chain "Hy-Vees" was found with the remains. It was first manufactured in the early 1950s. Examination of the bones show they were of a Caucasian male from his 50s or 60s, about five-foot-eight in height. The remains had apparently been buried before. However, for unknown reasons, they were dug up and placed in the trunk. Strangely, his lower leg bones and one of his hands were missing. Several nicks were found on his rib cage. The bullet in his head was from a .25 caliber gun from the turn-of-the-century.
On October 25, 2017, the skeleton was identified as Joseph J. Mulvaney, born in 1923. Joseph's granddaughter, Shelley, helped lead to the identification, reportedly after seeing a re-airing of the Unsolved Mysteries broadcast. DNA testing with his daughter confirmed his identity. Investigators learned from his daughter that he had been shot and killed by her uncle, John David Morris (identified as "Gabby" in the segment), in 1960. It is believed that Joseph's wife (Morris's sister) was also involved. After the murder, Morris buried Joseph in the footlocker in Iowa. At some point, Morris dug the trunk back up and transported it to Wyoming, where he was working. He then left the trunk behind with Newel. He later moved to Mississippi where he committed suicide.

Joseph's remains have been returned to his family and military memorial service for him was held on March 29, 2019.

Diablo Mesa: The Hot Take
Read it about two weeks ago and finally have time to get down my thoughts. Spoilers under the cut!
I liked it more than I thought. I think once I finished I came away liking it more than Old Bones.
I thought I was going to hate not Elon Musk Tappan but I ended up liking him pretty well, much better than Smithback and I have no issue with him and Nora
...Except that I question the ethics of Nora chairing a position he’s funding when they’re boning. But that’s a whole ‘nother thing.
I feel slightly attacked by the slope-shouldered academic comment.
Skip was annoying. Didn’t wish he died but I wasn’t sad when it seemed like he might have been killed by Lime/the plane crash. I don’t think the authors would be that mean to Nora.
Morwood dying sucked. He was great. Although the mention of mandatory retirement makes me wonder if Pendergast will ever get there. Wikipedia says that Pendergast was born in December of 1960 (but doesn’t cite from which book or where that date came from) which would make him 62 as of 2022 so there must be some playing fast and loose with his age/year of the stories. In my heart Pendergast is always 42-46.
I like the reference to Corrie from Still Life with Crows and her reading in her car under the powerlines. Made me nostalgic for reading the book for the first time.
Real story stuff: I found the premise really interesting. I love history and I love missing persons/unidentified decedent cases. I don’t have any hard parameters about historical times but I think my most general interest ends just after the end of World War II, so right around the Roswell incident. I even enjoyed the setting. While I generally prefer east coast settings, the idea of mysteries in the desert is a good one.
But on that note I’m a skeptic. I’m open to the idea of aliens on far away planets, but not as visitors to Earth. Full disclosure, I don’t believe in alien abduction or that aliens have visited/are visiting Earth. I’m not going to ramble too much on why I think aliens as abductors/visitors is bullshit, but I’m going to say there’s zero compelling “evidence”. You don’t find a phenomena/event, not know what it is, and then say aliens (themselves unproven as far as we know) because nothing else easily fits. That’s not how science works. Rant over.
That being said, I think the idea of a rouge operation to silence those who want to contact aliens is a really cool idea. Not that I agree with their methods, but I do agree that there’s no real reason to just assume that traveling aliens would be friendly. And you know what- it turns out they were right when that message at the end was translated.
So I guess all the survivors are just sworn to secrecy now?
I liked how the story went back to the unsolved murder of the scientists and worked in the spies.
Lime got what he deserved lol
I feel this almost kinship with Corrie. I mentioned before that I read Still Life with Crows when I was 16 or 17, so about Corrie’s age in that book so I feel like she and I are the same age. She’s new in her career and I’ve just started my training so I feel like we’re parallel. It feels good that both myself and this character that I feel very fondly toward are both in a similar stage in life and moving up.
I hope Corrie gets some romancin’ with cowboy cop man in the future. Not that Corrie needs a man or relationship, but I think it would be a fun dynamic to explore, especially if Pendergast is somehow around and ribs the hell out of her.
Overall I think this was really solid and it does make me more interested in Nora and Corrie novels. Granted, I still don’t feel that I know much about Nora’s character and she doesn’t really feel very distinct to me. Maybe it’s because she had less of a presence in the earlier books or it’s just been so long since I’ve read anything featuring her since Old Bones.
Probably won’t read this again but it was a good read and consistently kept my attention.
