This story was a pitch to @downeastmagazine that I had been wanting to work on for a while now. I was so pleased to be able to have the opportunity to photograph this story. These portraits were something I thought of the night before the shoot. I wanted to make some portraits of team members after a full practice, sweaty, and covered in sawdust. Today is #NationalGetOutdoorsDay. 🏕 And I just found out that only about 7% of US National Park visitors are Black. Only 7%! Guess the percentage of white visitors in the comments. ⠀⠀ So damn straight we’re gonna talk about what National Get Outdoors Day looks like for the Black community. ⠀⠀ First off, I’m white. I grew up in the country, in upstate NY. My dad took my sister and I hiking. My mom took us on road trips to beaches and zoos. We went camping every summer. I went to @unitycollege, an Environmental college in Maine, to earn a BS in wildlife biology. ⠀⠀ We weren’t rich, but we weren’t poor. We had ACCESS to outdoor spaces. We lived on a mountain in an old firehouse with a creek in our backyard. They instilled a love of nature and wildlife in me. An interest in outdoor recreation and conservation. ⠀⠀ Because we had the privilege of growing up with these experiences. Because our town was safe. Our parks were crime-free (minus my sister and I spray painting our faces under a bridge lol ��‍♀️). ⠀⠀ I’m learning more about why so few Black people are visiting our parks. A lot of Black employees are still paid less than white coworkers, despite having the same education and work history. And they have the highest unemployment rate among any racial groups [from the georgewright.org/351scott.pdf paper]. ⠀⠀ So many are forced to live in the poorer parts of their city. Crimes are higher here, parental awareness and paranoia of safety is heightened, and Black children are just simply not often getting that knowledge, skill set, and appreciation for the outdoors passed down to them. ⠀⠀ Outdoor areas are often viewed as white spaces and off limits to the Black community. ⠀⠀ I’ve never really thought about or noticed this much. Because of my privilege. I see white faces like mine all over outdoor media. Crowding our parks. Plastered all over hiking, camping, and climbing ads. 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚. With the 46-mile Ultra Run just a few days away I have been thinking a lot about nutrition: what to eat the day before and during the event. My favorite protein source is eggs and I love to pair that with vegetables as you can see here. With a generous 2 tsp of turmeric, my joints will benefit from its inherent anti-inflammatory property. The day before the event, I will consume my favorite carbohydrate: the sweet potato 🍠 If you haven't already, check out my blog for my sweet potato recipe - it's out of control yummy! As the day before winds down, so will my food intake; I want a relatively clean digestive track for the big day. On the morning of the Ultra I will wake up three hours before the event to eat a big sweet potato breakfast, go back to sleep and allow for digestion to kick in. The idea is to be ready to run 🏃 for at least 10 miles without the need to eat. Every hour afterward, I will consume a couple medjool dates and a banana. My support team will have more sweet potato mash and vegetable purée bone broth soup on hand when I really need an extra boost. Summer at Unity

Maine.... If you know anything about it, you know that its slogan is Vacationland. There is a good reason for this - it’s perfect in the summer!

The trees are in full blossom, the flowers are all in bloom, birds are chirping and it’s usually in the mid 70′s. The rocky Atlantic coast is about 30 minutes away and you can get to the mountains in about an hour and a half. 

So, where better to spend your summer than at Unity College? Unity College is offering many summer programs this year for youth through college. Check out our website at summer.unity.edu to find out more information and find a program that might be of interest to you or someone that you know.

Earth Day is always a big deal here at Unity College. My roommate, Amanda, celebrated the right way by cuddling one of the baby rabbits from the Unity College Barn!

If you’ve never experienced a woodsmen competition here’s a little info about each of these images. 1 - The cross cut, a classic event in which teammates aim for the fastest cut through a log. This requires an unbelievable amount coordination, strength and concentration. 2 - A team of two is given three matches and single dry cedar log. Using hatchets they work quickly splitting and building up a fire. A can of water with dish soap in it is brought to a boil and the time stops when the soap bubbles over. Here teammates take turns turns blowing oxygen into the fire. 3- These spikes are used in the pole climb. An event in which a climber ascends a free standing pole with these spikes while holding a rope wrapped around the pole.
