The production crew at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City has been on strike since January 12 because our management refuses to negotiate in good faith. We first unionized a full calendar year ago, and we’re fighting for our first contract.
Last month, our bosses suddenly attempted to impose non-negotiable conditions and threatened to cancel upcoming shows, nearly 100 workers UNANIMOUSLY voted to authorize a strike in response.
As Workers we’ve been clear on our priorities, including industry-standard wages, fair scheduling, and healthcare benefits for all employees. Unfortunately, we’ve now waited 24 days for the Atlantic Theater to provide a counterproposal, and counting…
Can you take 20 seconds to sign and share the petition to urge the Atlantic Theater Company to end the delays, drop the union-busting, and negotiate a fair contract?

I'm sure it has been said a million times already (it's a sad tale, but we post it anyways) but heartbroken the new live London recording of Hadestown cuts so much, especially from act two.

Fun fact (which I unfortunately can’t back up because I heard it from a friend but it doesn’t make anyone look bad so I’ll share it anyways): Dmitri Shostakovich was quite the fan of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar! He saw a performance of it in on a trip to London sometime between 1972, its West End premiere, and 1975, the year he died, and was apparently quite impressed.
Pictured below is a photo of Shostakovich and British composer Benjamin Britten. The two of them were reportedly quite good friends.

Go For the Kids: Children and the Picture Theatre
Wests Theatre’s ‘Win a Pony Competition c 1957. The prize was part of a promotion campaign for the Tim Hovey Film, The Private War of Major Benson. Tim was a juvenile star of the era and Wests Picture Theatre and the local radio station 5AD in a joint promotion wanted to find Adelaide’s cutest boy between the ages of 6 to 9. The prize? Their very own Pony. I dread to think what happened to that…

hey while we're still on the topic of the wga strike can we also talk about the insultingly paltry amount of pay stage actors across the board receive in exchange for the absolutely insane amount of time and effort they're required put into each production? assuming they get paid at all, as actors are often forced to work one, even two jobs to be able to make ends meet AND perform? is that something we can discuss or nah

if anyone has been following the fucked-up anti-union termination of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre artists, i highly urge you to donate to their GoFundMe! they’re struggling with rent, groceries, and now even healthcare after losing their jobs unexpectedly.
@musicalartistsunion (the AGMA instagram account) and @dancersofdbdt (also on instagram) have more details.
if you live in the DFW, care about dance, or support unions, this is something you should especially look into!

for the job meme: avoiding specifics so as to not doxx myself but i literally do work in a theatre 🫢 and lemme just say the tdv could afford to be WORSE
Ok so my thing is that I love the idea of Armand being an objectively terrible theatre boss just from an HR perspective... like my guy, the morale of this theatre is terrible and no one follows the rules anyways and also you keep the dead bodies of ex employees in the basement. And yet I absolutely believe you that there are human theatres that manage to be Worse. Incredible

UNION STATION
1:30 PM
Cops William Holden and Barry Fitzgerald race to foil a kidnapping plot in Chicago's Union Station. The film packs a double-feature's worth of thrills into its brief running time, including some brutality decades ahead of its time. Ace crime scenarist Sydney Boehm keeps the plot humming like a runaway train and director (and renowned cinematographer) Rudolph Maté makes the ride more vivid through use of actual locations. Costarring Nancy (Sunset Blvd.) Olson and a terrifying Lyle Bettger.
UNITED STATES (1950) Dir. Rudolph Maté. 80 min.

CAIRO STATION/ BAB EL HADID
3:30 PM
A newspaper hawker (played by the director himself) at the eponymous train depot develops a frightening obsession with a sexy lemonade vendor. That's the premise for a suspenseful drama which cunningly uses the bustling station to depict clashing strata of Egyptian society. Chahine's combination of gritty authenticity and psychosexual Expressionism created a landmark of Egyptian cinema—despite public boycotts over its unflinching perversity and politics. Costar Hind Rustum was nicknamed "The Arab Marilyn Monroe." In Arabic with English subtitles
EGYPT (1958) Dir. Youssef Chahine. 77 min.

ODD MAN OUT
7:00 PM
This intense manhunt thriller won the inaugural "Best Film" prize from the British Academy of Film Awards, and it remains one of the most highly regarded movies ever made in the United Kingdom. James Mason plays fugitive Irish Nationalist Johnny McQueen, roped into a heist that goes fatally wrong. Can Johnny navigate his way safely through a nocturnal nightmare of danger and deceit? Robert Krasker's cinematography is as good as his legendary work with Reed on The Third Man. An all-time classic!
UNITED KINGDON (1947) Dir. Carol Reed. 116 min.

VICTIMS OF SIN / VICTIMAS DEL PECADO
9:30 PM
NEW 4K RESTORATION  A film that virtually leaps off the screen. The music, the characters, the confrontations, the emotions—all boil over the top in this uniquely Mexican version of noir dubbed rumberas. Sexy Ninón Sevilla dances up a storm in a club featuring some of Latin America's top performers—Pérez Prado, Rita Montaner and Pedro Vargas—all while dodging a vicious pimp, defying her boss, and rescuing an abandoned baby from the trash. As André Breton is reputed to have said, "In Europe we talk about surrealism, in Mexico they live it every day." In Spanish with English subtitles
MEXICO (1951) Dir. Emilio Fernández. 90 min.
