You rolled your eyes as Riri crossed her arms “Ri please! You owe me!” You whined “I owe you $20 not a day pretending to be your girlfriend so your parents would get off of your back” she huffed “C’mon Ri, it’ll be fun I swear” you said as you interlocked your hand with hers “pleaseeeeee!” You begged, a sigh of relief leaving your lips when she nodded “fine fine!”

When y’all reached your parents house their were kids everywhere, your cousins and uncles were sitting on the couches while your mom and aunts were gossiping in the kitchen. “Wassup lil’cuz” your cousin chuckled as he gave you a side hug “and whose this beautiful woman?” Your uncle phill called out “This is Riri, she’s my girlfriend” you gave a goofy smile and looked at her, she waved at him. “Well good, you ain’t single no more” Your cousin smirked “shut yo ass up Biggs” you huffed before you brought Riri into the kitchen.

Almost instantly she was surrounded by aunts asking questions, but you walked over to your mom and started a conversation. “So you actually have a girlfriend?” She asked and you smiled “yes, this time I do”

After some talking to your mom you looked around for Riri and couldn’t find her, you walked into the living room and found Riri chilling with your cousins. A small smile formed on your face, even if this was temporary. You loved her, you just didn’t have the guts to admit it.

Riri loved it there, she partied, ate and had fun. You finally felt free around her, your arms stayed around her shoulder most of the night but you gave Riri a panicked expression when your mom told y’all to kiss. Riri only smirked and grabbed your waist, pulling you closer to her and planting a kiss on your lips.

It felt different though, she closed her eyes. Your face felt hot, it lasted for about 10 seconds but it felt like 10 hours. “Riri” you whispered as you pulled away but she only smirked and gave you another kiss before your mom started clapping. “ADORABLE!” Your mom cheered “THATS MY NIGGA!” Your cousin yelled.

When it was time to go home you climbed into the car, Riri getting in the drivers seat. As soon as you pulled away everything was quiet, no more kids, no more cousins yelling, just you two. Her hand found it’s way to your thigh “Ri..” you mumbled “Your fine, you don’t need to pretend anymore” you whispered but she only smiled and kissed you “Who said I was pretending mamas?” She said kissing you again.

also alsoooo was there any other media that inspired the world building (dichotomy between tashi and maya’s lives, their family members, etc)?? i know twitches has been mentioned lol but did that even cross your mind at the time or were you drawing inspo from somewhere else entirely?

Okay, so picture this. I was sat in front of my laptop trying to brainstorm this thing, it was I believe around June or July and I was playing Friendly Space Ninja's video about Gossip Girl 2021 in the background when it came to me. What if Tashi had a half sister she didn't know about? If you couldn't tell the idea came from Julian and Zoya's storyline in season 1, they are half-sisters who share a mom who passed before the events of the series. Now the inspo goes a bit further then, but I don't want to spoil the rest of the story so I'm gonna have to leave it there.

The whole thing of them meeting on Facebook came to me cause I had watched The Social Network for the first time, I was on Social Network tumblr and somebody pointed out the similarities between the two movies. Also, within the timeline of Challengers, them being on there would have made sense. Especially cause the site was newly available to high school students the year Maya and Tashi meet, so every just fit like a puzzle.

I'm just going to say it now, Twitches was nowhere near on my mind, heck I haven't watched it in years. So when my first comment on Compress/Repress was "This is so Twitches vibes", I was sat at my work office desk in shock. Like, their mind is something else cause damn I didn't see that babes.

Another bit of inspiration were black families within tv and film, especially from the late 90s and early 2000s. I wanted to have Maya and Tashi come from two different worlds, Maya coming from a prestigious upper class black family and Tashi from a fumble lower middle class family. So with that there really isn't one single inspiration, for example Winston was a bit based off of Uncle Phill from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, like Phill he is a lawyer and social justice activist. Tabitha was based off of every upper class older women you've ever seen, think of the rich mom from Diary of A Mad Black woman lol and also funny enough the grandma from Gilmore Girls.

henrik opened the door when he heard knocking and thanked the post-man when he handed over the box. waving bye to the post-man, he closed the door and walked through to the kitchen inspecting the box. opening the box, he saw three sachets. "these must be the new protein powers that phill was talking about the other day in the gym." he said to himself.

lifting out one of the sachets, henrik ripped open the wrapper and put it in his protein shake bottle, topping it up with his preferred oat milk. shaking the bottle he lifted it to his lips to take a swig, chocolate, pretty good. henrik took another swig and carried on with his day. he went about his routine of doing this shift at the bar and then returning to the gym for his training sessions with clients before he would do his third training session for the day. he had stopped by phils office to thank him for the protein powers but he wasn't in, so henrik left the gym and made his way home to shower and change to then go see terence.

3 days post protein shake

he work feeling sluggish and apathetic. great, just what he needed right now, a flu. his skull was thumping like he could feel every brain wave pulsing in his head. the back of his eyes and body feeling like he hadn't just had eight hours of sleep. whatever flu was going round, he'd caught it bad. trying to stay in routine he forced himself out of bed, grabbed his morning protein shake from the samples he was sent and begrudgingly went about his day.

6 days post protein shake

calorie count be damned, henrik wanted to eat everything in sight. his stomach felt like it was caving in on itself, eating itself out of pure hunger, it made him want to throw up. sleep was now a distant dream, the headache feeling like his skull was in a vice and its cousin the fever having him burning up to new heights. he spoke to hayden since he was direct family as well as his boss and was keeping in touch with him to let him know how his flu was fairing.

7 days post protein shake

this was hell. this wasn't just a flu, he was sure of it. maybe some sort of chest infection plus flu he thought.

11 days post protein shake

he had long ago told terence, pegasus, travis, phil and anyone else he would normally see to stay away from his place but all he wanted was some sort of conversation - especially from terence. henrik looked at his phone on his bedside table and couldn't muster the energy to lift his arm to pick it up. he couldn't even if he wanted to. food had now joined sleep as a distant dream. he felt like death was genuinely looming over him and he couldn't call terence, his body wouldn't let him. he wanted to tell terence everything he could, for him and for the rest of their friends and family. he wanted to tell him he loved him and a million more things. his mind distracted with his thoughts of terence, his eyes fluttered closed and henrik succumbed to sleep.

12 days post protein shake

henrik never woke and was found by his uncle when he came to check on him after not hearing from him. he was rushed to the hospital and it was determined that henrik hera had fallen into a coma.
