Increase in young women and girls using paracetamol for self harm leads Australian Government to limit pack sizes for panadol etc. Limits on where and how you can buy. Recommendations have been put forward to make it a script only med.

No mention of any preventative measures to try and avoid women and girls getting to a point where downing a large box of panadol sounds like a good idea (please don't. Apart from all the many and varied reasons why you shouldn't do this to yourself it is apparently very painful).

Thanks very much Nickolas Buckley Sydney Toxicologist who has made these recommendations. As a cis white male in a major city I very much doubt you've ever had any difficulty in your life getting even the most basic pain medication so I really appreciate you making it even harder for those of us who are not in that demographic to live pain free.

There's one pharmacist where I live. They jack the prices up on absolutely everything. We have no permanent doctors they're all ring ins. None of them like giving scripts or doing tests. They don't want to be responsible for the care of a patient they've just met, don't know the history of and will possibly never see again. And wait times for appointments is months. Not days. Months.

All of which would be irrelevant if this measure actually stopped anyone harming themselves. It won't. Taking away one means does nothing. You need to take away the impetus. And that requires more mental health care availability, more education, equality for females (of all varieties) in healthcare & education & pay & bodily autonomy & everything else. It requires prevention not policing.

Why tf do I need to be angry about this? Why is it so hard for these jerkwads to see the obvious?? Wait a year and some other drug will be taken off the shelves because it's being misused and nothing of actual value will have changed.

One thing that helps with the wolf stuff is that they can use real-life wolf-dogs to film at least a lot of it, and then how they film it could remove the necessity for super realistic-looking cgi wolves.

Coincidentally, I was on the set of True Blood like 15 years ago and watched them film scenes with wolves for (I think?) the third season. They used real wolf-dog mixes that looked like wolves (it was eerie lol)--I was told they'll sometimes use full wolves that have been domesticated, but never for scenes where the wolves have to pretend-attack something because they don't want to trigger that aggression in a full wolf. But who knows if things have changed, that was a while ago.

So for anyone who doesn’t keep up with nz politics, which i’m assuming is most of you, our new radical right government have decided one of their main aims of their term will be to re-interpret the Treaty of Waitangi.

The Treaty is an agreement between Maori and the Crown, now the NZ government. It is the founding document of new zealand and is recognised as a constitutional document today; it is the only treaty of its kind/time still honoured, and it is the steps we’ve taken through the Treaty to provide restitution and build an ongoing relationship with Maori and their iwi (tribes) that has allowed the relationship between Maori and the government to thrive where other indigenous groups have struggled to achieve recognition of their rights.

This is going to be entirely undone. Not only is this issue inflammatory and a threat to race relations in Aotearoa, leaked documents show the proposed “reinterpretation” wants to negate pretty much the entirety of the legal rights provided to Maori under the treaty. For example, the treaty article that guarantees land rights for Maori will be reinterpreted to guarantee land rights for “all New Zealanders”. Which means this article would be essentially meaningless for Maori.

By removing Maori from the context they are trying to put Maori on an “equal footing” with all New Zealanders; they are riding the idea that Maori have special rights and privileges above that of the average New Zealander. Obviously this is bullshit but it’s effective rhetoric and there’s a grain of truth to in that the extent of Maori rights hadn’t been clearly defined due to the ongoing nature of the process. So this has got a lot of people with a poor grasp of the issues very upset and baying for change.

There is a hui (meeting) being held today for all the iwi to begin discussions of how Maori will respond to this. New Zealand politics isn’t very interesting usually, but our progress on indigenous rights, until now, has been absolutely ahead of the field. If you care about indigenous rights globally, you should care about this, because in the same way Australia’s referendum loss has spurred on this action, the loss of rights here will spur other right wing governments to be similarly bold to their own indigenous groups.

Indigenous rights in New Zealand are under attack. They are meeting today to discuss it, and New Zealand will be listening, but I want the world to be listening. Because our government needs the shame of being called out by more than just the people who they’ve already decided don’t vote for them.

Maori have a long and proud history of fighting for their rights, and they’ll do it again here. And I’ll be on the pickets beside them, but there’ll be plenty of my own pickets to attend, because this government is radical in every sense of the word.

So please, even if you’re very far away, stand behind them in this. Keep your eyes on us. Amplify their voices. Don’t let the racism drown them out.

I may not be an Aboriginal Australian but it was still very upsetting for me to see a slur tagged in a sponsored post and so I cannot imagine how upsetting that would have been for an Aboriginal person if they’d seen it. Berlin announced on 23 April that it will resume cooperation with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza. Germany’s move came after an independent investigation headed by former French diplomat Catherine Colonna that found “neutrality-related issues” in implementing UNRWA’s procedures to “ensure compliance with the humanitarian principles of neutrality.” Colonna’s report made note that Israel provided no proof of whether UNRWA staff were involved with the Palestinian resistance’s Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October. “The German government has dealt intensively with the allegations made by Israel against UNRWA and has been in close contact with the Israeli government, the United Nations, and other international donors,” a joint statement by the German Foreign Office and the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development read. The former French diplomat’s investigation proposed reforms to UNRWA to increase the neutrality of staff and behavior, education, and governance, including methods to achieve these goals through engagement with donors. Germany pushed UNRWA to implement these recommendations, strengthen its internal audit functions, and improve the external surveillance of project management. “In support of these reforms, the German government will soon continue its cooperation with UNRWA in Gaza, as Australia, Canada, Sweden, and Japan, among others, have already done so,” the joint statement continued. Germany gave the UN agency over $200 million in 2023 and is the organization’s second-largest donor after the US. In an interview with Al-Jazeera, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said the attacks on the agency “have nothing to do with neutrality issues but in reality, they are motivated by the objective to strip the Palestinians from the refugee status.”
