“What you hold onto is less important than the act of holding on itself. It’s so easy to get lost in ourselves and this world. Sometimes you need to find your way back one tiny miracle at a time.” - The Sunshine Court
WISHING THE HAPPIEST OF BOOK BIRTHDAYS TO @korakos! YOU DID IT AND ITS BLOODY BRILLIANT!
Please please excuse the disgusting things my iPad camera has done to this photo. This is the first time in years I’ve done something like this fully traditional and it has stretched so many rusty parts of my brain but I’m SO GLAD I got this done in time for release day! This book is WONDERFUL and I’m so happy it’s now out in the world!

(Spoilers for Prof. Layton games 2, 3 and 4)
The UK/European Layton game titles are better than the US ones:
Pandora's Box/Diabolical Box:
Now, some might think conflating the legends of two different boxes is bad, and I admit the fact there are two names to the box in game is a bit annoying ("the Elysian Box, also known as Pandora's Box" was such a confusing line to hear as a child, especially because the Elysian/Elysium connection didn't click (and I was at my peak Greek myth period too)), but I like it. Firstly because it's more attractive to the potential buyer since you think he's discovered the real Pandora's Box of myth, and then it's just clearly a parallel with the myth. The other reason is that in the legend of Pandora's box, the only thing left in the box is hope. And it's the hope that Sophia will receive Anton's letter, the hope hers will get to him and he will forgive her, that the box really carries. Also it's a play on the fact Elysian is also from Greek myth (i.e. the heavenly field the good go to when they die), so it makes sense that the people who nicknamed it were thinking about Greek myths.
Lost Future/Unwound Future
The future Layton and Claire had was lost. Simple as that. Also it makes her farewell speech sound better: "Our shared past and our lost future". The American version just sounds silly. Unwound works ok because it also works for the 'future London' being a future where things go wrong, but yeah, if Claire has to say the title, it has to be Lost Future. Also it sounds more dramatic. Plus lost still works in the sense things went bad because they 'lost' (i.e. didn't win) or they got lost (in a moral sense), like things are so bad it can't be rescued (so they had to go back in time to fix it).
Spectre's Call/Last Specter
The fact Last Specter and Lost Future sound so similar bugs me but most players outside Australia won't have both titles in their collection so anyway. Why is the spectre the 'last' one? It is never called the last spectre, so why name that game like that? There's clearly a spectre's call though and it's an integral plot point. The only thing I can think of is that 'last' is a reference to Loosha being the last of her kind, but I feel that's too confusing a connection because it's not clear until quite close to the end. It made me think I was missing something, or had misheard Descole's story in the opening. Also Spectre's call sounds more ominous, though it's a pretty close one here, unlike LF/UF where one clearly sounds more serious.

randomly caught this headline and surprise surprise, it’s a copy and paste job from an old interview. but now i’m curious.
has anyone run into the original 1994 Reverb interview?
According to Reverb, during a 1994 interview with guitar writer Tony Bacon, Paul shared which Elvis song made him burst into tears as an adult.
Reflecting back on The King’s 1950s Sun Studio records, Macca said: “Yeah. I heard them this summer – haven’t heard them for years – and I was blown away. I suddenly realised the last time I listened to this thoroughly was before The Beatles, before all that happened to me, and it just stripped it all away. It was like I was a kid playing snooker again and listening. It actually got me crying, pow. Really did it to me.”
The Elvis song that reduced Paul to tears was I Want You, I Need You, I Love You. The Beatles star said he could remember all the words, singing the lyrics: “Hold me close, hold me tight…”
The now 80-year-old shared: “And my kids were like, Dad, you know all the words to this stuff? You better believe it. And I thought, ‘Well, I once was a kid like this, before all The Beatles thing, and now you live with the whole legacy of The Beatles, and it’s great. You could do a lot worse.’ But you know what I mean? i Just the idea of that was fantastic—I was 17 again. Not a bad feeling when you’re 52. Anyway, what do you want to talk about? I’m nattering on here.”
ETA: I found it! 1994 Reverb Interview

I need a massive sudden hyperfixation shock to happen again
#that era when i'd just got out of the onceler divorce of summer 2021. and then listened to everywhere at the end of time in october#and it was ruining my life and i couldn't sleep and there was nothing really good happening#like it wasn't Bad bc at least i wasn't depressed anymore like i was in the summer but it was still just dead. and i couldn't get#the last 6 minutes of eateot out of my head#and then. suddenly. got shot with the *blurry screenshot of stan and kyle as adults* beam#south park post covid trailer released. everyone who had ever been in that fandom was awakening from their graves#it was like 'future episode??' 'why have they got noses' 'what the fuckkkk' 'is anything real anymore?' etc#it was such big news that it instantly shocked me out of my existential crisis and reawakened that hyperfixation for the 9347384th time#and i vividly remember going on tumblr the morning after it aired and trying to avoid spoilers bc i hadn't watched it yet#but i accidentally saw a sentence something along the lines of 'kenny's a billionaire philanthropist now' and. ok i had to see a picture?#so i did and he looked like the epitome of a cool uncle#and then i was walking to uni that morning probably looking like i was crying or something bc like. kenny successful future#and the whole thing just brought my general mood up so much?? so by the time it was 2022 i was absolutely fine#and then 2022 was so good. up until like august and september#and things got a bit dangerous again like my mood was alright but the slightest thing could bring it down#and then my best friend/housemate got a girlfriend and it was that whole drama and her existence basically ruined my last year of uni#and since then i've become so bitter and cynical and all victimy and it's so annoying and i don't even realise i'm doing it#so now i only ever notice negative things happening and have done since like the end of 2022#and i just need one of my old hyperfixations to do something insane again. like sp post covid.#i need. idk victor hugo to come back to life and publish notre dame de paris 2. or something#or for pip to come back to south park. that would actually fix me forever tbh#or the golden ratio to announce they're touring the uk for free. okay no ykw that would fix me#orrrrrrrrr idk. secret history made into a film but it's actually good#anyway. the south park kids as adults with noses set off an entire like 8 months of Pure Optimism in 2022 and i need her back more than ever#ramble

Waiting to watch the new owl house episode is like waiting for the bus, except this bus has the fastest WiFi, somehow serves meals, has a nice bus driver, heated seats which everyone is always guaranteed and clean windows. But you're waiting in a hail storm and you're hungry and barely clinging onto consciousness and you just want sanctuary.

Infinite list of favourite lyrics: 222/?
John Cale - Dying on the Vine (1985)
"Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter?
The troops, the celebrations in the sun.
The authorities say my papers are all in order
And if I wasn't such a coward
I would run.
I'll see you when all the shooting's over;
Meet me on the other side of town.
Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection,
It's always nice to have them hanging around.
I was thinking about my mother,
I was thinking about what's mine.
I was living my life like a Hollywood,
But I was dying, dying on the vine."
#favourite lyrics#john cale#dying on the vine#larry sloman#1985#artificial intelligence#coming at a time of intense productivity (recording three albums in a little over a year‚ as well as producing work by former bandmate Nico#and others) as well as professional frustration‚ as his sparse experimental work failed to gain a popular audience‚ Artificial Intelligence#was a sort of last stab at commercial releasing for Cale; returning to a more accessible pop sound characterised by drum machines and synth#overlays‚ Cale worked with a cowriter‚ Sloman‚ to produce typically avant garde music within a more radio friendly framework#the result wasn't particularly successful‚ and afaik this first single from the album didn't even chart here in the uk#a pity‚ because I'd count it among his very best works (and I'm not alone; the song has had a slow reappraisal and is now generally#considered one of his finest of this era). a despondent‚ gloomy study of one man's annihilation‚ draped in several layers of allegory;#the vine can be read as a fairly literal metaphor (fruit left too long without harvest spoiling)‚ or as a reference to his then home on the#intersection between hollywood blvd and vine street in LA‚ a then rundown area rife with drug abuse and criminal activity; or as a nod to#Cale's struggles with alcoholism in this period (as well as a cocaine habit; his daughter was born soon after the release of this album‚ as#a result of which he retreated from the music business for a while and kicked his addictions).#some have pointed to the quoted verse‚ apparently about an authoritarian state‚ as being inspired by Cale's love of the literature of#Graham Greene‚ and there are some other parallels earlier in the song; mostly tho this is about a moment of crisis‚ of Cale at rock bottom#surveying where he was at in his life at that point and realising he needs to change (just as possible to read the authoritarian state as#every day life‚ with the troops regular people living their noisy lives around him and Cale's temptation to 'run' as a metaphor for suicide#who knows. whatever he's saying‚ there's an awful‚ beautiful melancholy to the near lilt in his voice as he ponders 'I was thinking#about my mother..' an incredible work from an under appreciated artist who‚ happily‚ beat his demons and stayed sober
