Not too prying, happy to answer.

I’ve always wanted to live abroad and have been traveling to different countries since I was 17. I did an international economics program for my bachelor’s, before shifting my degree to more of a culture focus (Chinese Language and Ethnic Minorities)

I’ve worked on cruise ships, was shortlisted for Peace Corps and a Fulbright Study, both of which fell through for ✨reasons✨

UK was the first place I went out of the country and I fell in love, it’s always been the most “home” to me. Working through RQ, I’ve come to develop their production arm into a full department. Living in the US was increasingly becoming difficult with timezones and restricting the in-person events I could attend and help organize effectively.

It took about 18 months of work from HR and a third party to figure out how to do it and to make sure the company qualified to sponsor me.The UK works on a points program, so I qualify for a Specialized Worker Visa through my academic background and role level in the company.

Best advice I can give to those that want to live abroad:

- Get creative with how you travel. I am a first generation college graduate who grew up below the poverty line. I’ve still been able to travel through scholarships, odd jobs, etc. I recommend you visit a bunch of places to make sure life abroad makes sense for you, it’s not for everyone.

- Know your skills and who needs them. You can check for Skilled Worker Visas in various countries. There’s lots of places that will sponsor you if they have a job shortage in that category.

- Patience. I spent the better part of a decade floating about in weird places before I found a method that worked for me.

Anti-fascist counter demos in the UK on Wednesday the 7th and Friday the 9th of August

There are going to be a new round of anti-immigrant fascist riots in the UK on Wednesday the 7th of August and Friday the 9th. If you are able to get to one of the counter-demos, and it is safe for you to do so (and I'm including safe for your mental health; please don't push yourself too far), it's really important to go. Not only to physically stop the fascists from burning down immigration lawyers' practices or attacking Muslims in the street, but to stand up and be counted. This is a terrifying time to be an immigrant or a person of colour in the UK, and seeing the fascists outnumbered and humiliated by decent people can go some way to making it less bad.

Stay safe:

come early, well before the fascists assemble

Wear a mask, not only to avoid police surveillance but to avoid being doxxed by the fascists

Don't carry identifying information, such as credit cards, in case the police arrest you

Write the number for a protest lawyer on your arm so you won't lose it

Bring water

Bring suncream

Bring a friend if you can

Wear comfortable shoes

Hello Scarlet. I read all your twitter threads and watched Edward's videos and his series. Thank you so much for helping me understand law. At first I couldn't understand how would I surrender because in theory this seemed difficult i.e to enjoy imagination and not look at 3D. Then one day I decided to just do it for fun. First I changed the weather. Truly felt it to be done. The weather changed the very next hour or so. Then I decided that my bestie would go to UK for studies. She had no money, she'd cry everyday to me and I wanted nothing but best for her. To study abroad is her dream. I decided she's already in UK and she's studying in her desired uni. I would fullfill myself imagination and would tell her to have faith and tell her I have faith that she'll go to console her. The circumstances were too difficult because of her opposing siblings and zero funds.(she's orphan and we live with elders in my country) . Literally a week later she gave me good news that money came out of nowhere and she got her visa (it's difficult to get visa when you're from a certain notorious third world country lmao) and ticket and all this happened so fast. Literally one week ago she was crying that she may never go uk and now she's going in just two days?? I was relieved kinda surprised but something in me told me it already happened so I wasn't like jumping with happiness as I thought I would. Truth is it is way easier to apply than to read. In theory it seemed difficult like how I fullfill myself in imagination and not look at 3d but when I actually applied, it was way way way easier. Zero effort at all. Whenever I would think of her, I'd remind myself she's already in UK and imagined her messaging me. And felt it done. I now know what this "feel it to be done/true" actually means. It was as if I'm freed from the desire. So thank you so much for your work. Thank you! And I advise everyone to just put the phone down and apply it and take your advice of "surrender to imagination" because now I understand what you meant. Thank you for helping me understand this.

Oh sis I'm sorry but as a native a lot of stuff like visas or healthcare for an expat I won't know about. I feel like the procedure is fairly similar to the UK in that you go to a gp first for scripts or any tests and referrals. We've got Medicare which is similar to NHS but I don't know when or how you can get a medicare card once you move here.

It depends where you are but I reckon you'd be fine to move and live alone (like misogyny is everywhere but it's not like women don't go anywhere alone), however living alone is EXPENSIVE, almost prohibitively so. The minimum wage for full time work is around 50k a year, or 900 a week before tax, rent for an apartment is at least 350 but that's for a studio that's small and likely old, or in the middle of nowhere where you need a car. The average "entry level" apartment in a major city is going to be around 600k and generally requires a 20% deposit. Repayments will vary with interest rates and size of mortgage. It's very common for people to live in share houses and it's not difficult to find women only ones but I haven't lived in a share house in over a decade so wont know much about good platforms or how the search goes.

Taxes are mostly automatic, your pay is taxes before you get it, sales tax is included in all prices where it's applicable, it's unlikely you'll have to pay additional at eofy unless you're earning a lot more (over 90k) and don't have private health insurance. You can study, but courses will be expensive as you likely won't be eligible for a commonwealth supported place which has reduced fees.

If you need a car depends on where you live. I recommend looking at job listings for things you'd likely be doing to get an idea of wages, and looking for housing/rent prices in different areas. Once you've picked a city, you've still gotta get a feel for where things are in relation to each other, what part of the city etc etc real estate dot com, seek, and the public transport website for each state can help with figuring distances and if you want a car. I don't THINK it's difficult for poms to move here as there are plenty and they do it all the time, there might be websites or forums to discuss common hurdles that can help.

Other important info: footy means one of 3 games (rugby league, rugby union, or AFL), the big beer is nearly always called a pint but the small ones change by state, it's a parma, "how are you?" is a hello type greeting that should be answered with a basic 'good thanks' and not the truth unless the asker is quite a good friend.

Healthcare here in general is pretty good-- we have bulk billed doctors services, so for just a check up appointment, you'll be paying around $20AUD. For the bulk billing, you will require an Australian Medicare card.

I get a three monthly prescription for my medication from one appointment. My medicine is significantly reduced in cost with the Medicare card/bulk billing.

Income to be comfortable varies wildly. Some people suggest no less than $100,000AUD after tax, some much less, others more-- it's really too variable to suggest one specific tax bracket.

I can say that Australia has very high tax rates, so be prepared for that.

Our universities take in a lot of overseas and immigrant students, so you should be good there!

The city has a decent train line and buses are also available.

Melbourne is also a very walkable city.

I personally don't drive atm and can still get around okay.

I live about 45 minutes by train from the CBD-- if you are planning on working inner city, you may want to move closer so you have less of a commute, but it's dependent on how long you personally are willing to travel.

I personally prefer outer suburbs for the quieter, greener living.

Rent or buy is really a personal choice! I'm looking to buy in the next 10 years as I want my own space, but it's super dependent on what you want!

I would say yes, Melbourne is in general a safe city and you should be okay living here alone. I have single friends who have lived in the inner city alone and found it to be fine.
