"i don't feel connected to my culture"
You spend all of your time online speaking in english, only reading books in english and watching tv shows in english. You don't go to museums or visit historical buildings in your town, you don't question people older about their lives about how they used to live. You dislike the folk clothing of your people because you do not educate yourself about it. You find tradition "cringy" or gross.
At some point you have to realize that no one will teach you about your culture if you do not seek that knowledge out.

So uuuuh... With everything happening in the US right now, are you still planning to go? Or change of plan and your fiancée joins you in France for now ? Asking because I'm genuinely worried about your safety...
Thanks for the concern! But my plans aren't changing. It took us one year to go through the fiance visa process and it's not the kind of thing where we can just go and change plans entirely. I have specific steps I have to go through for us to be legally allowed to be married and stay together, which do include moving to the US within a certain amount of time. So I'm sticking to it. It's been too hard and we've come too close for me to just throw it all down the drain.
Besides... Part of the things that may go to shit in the near future, that no one is talking about because there's so much more to talk about, but that are etched into my soul, is more travel bans. Trump's the one who put up the travel ban from France to the US years ago. If anything I'm anxious to go BEFORE another travel ban happens.
Also... My fiance doesn't speak French, not enough to properly get by in France in my opinion anyway, and not that anyone's aware on a global level, but I'm not 100% certain that the future of France is looking very bright either. So there's that too.

Favorite thing about Clark Kent, or alternatively, favorite Superman comic?
Favorite thing about Clark Kent can really be summed up with this comic page:
Tumblr media
Like I know the joke is that People like Superman because he's nice but like. That so is the appeal to me is that Clark Kent possesses an unwavering, unflinching kindness and care for everyone. He believes, fundamentally, in the ability for people to grow, and change, and be better, even we he thinks an individual currently sucks ass. In his ideal world, people like Lex Luthor aren't taken down. They aren't defeated, they aren't killed, they're striving to be more. To give up the constant struggle for wealth and power in favor for struggling to help. To use their status and their riches and change the system they so long benefited from into something that makes it so everyone can live.
And the thing is, Clark Kent does this from such a fundamentally human place. He has love and kindness and is proud of you, not from the perspective of a god, but from the perspective of a guy who listened to his parents on how to be good. AND he's flawed! He can be bitchy and frustrated and petty and angry just like anyone AND he still guided by a fundamental principle of kindness. Not because he's immune to bad actions, not because of his powers, not because he can sit on a throne above the little people, but because he loves us, he loves people, he loves his friends and his family and strangers on the street and his enemies, even if they don't love him back.
(Side tangent: this is why i can't stand a cynical, bitter, borderline villain Superman. OR a boring personalityless Superman. Both of them miss the point of his character, that his humanity and complexity and moments of weakness and goodness are not all separate, disparate characteristics, but in fact all one in the same. [double side tangent: i should get to fight zack snyder in a denny's parking lot.)
I also like that he's funney sometimes.
Favorite Superman Comics:
Hmm. Well I'm far from super well versed in Superman comics, I know him overall from other media better, BUT I can recommend:
Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid
Superman VS The Klan by Gene Luen Yang
Superman: For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb
and especially people that want to get more to the core of the character without being bogged down with a shit ton of lore
Superman: Red & Blue by various authors.
(I've also been enjoying the Superman/Batman series by Mark Waid. Dude knows what I want in a comic lol)

I'll forever be upset about how Elemental (2023 Pixar movie) flopped so hard, and it's not even its fault.
Let's be real, going against Across the Spiderverse would be a deathblow for any animated movie, but the marketing team REALLY didn't help matters. Not only did the trailers barely show up (to the point my friends DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT EXISTED), the trailers also did such a poor job representing its actual story.
A lot of people were turned off by the "unoriginal premise" as well as the "forbidden romance", and I can't even blame them but no!!! The story is so much more than just "ooo they can't fall in love because they're (gasp) FIRE AND WATER?!?!?!?" and "what if (insert concept) has emotions but elements this time"!!!!!
At the heart of it all is a personal immigrant story. A story about two fire people moving to another place in order to start a new and hopefully better life (aka literally immigrants). A story about their daughter who feels in debt to them for making the sacrificd to leave their home. A story about her feeling like she'll have to sacrifice her whole life and her dreams in order to repay them and make them happy.
Not to mention how Asian-coded it is!!! The director, Peter Sohn, is clearly writing from his perspective as a Korean-American immigrant, and as an Asian immigrant, I resonated so unbelievably hard with Ember's story. It really felt like the movie held up a mirror in front of me. I've never felt this seen in a movie before this one.
And it feels so good!!! I'm so sad that a lot of people will be missing it out because the marketing team did such a terrible job at their literal jobs. If more people gave it a chance, they'll likely find a story that truly made them feel heard.
Also the romance is really cute. Like I don't typically seek out romance stories, but damn that was good food, that was good fluff. I think it's also a great allegory for interracial couples, but I'm not in an interracial relationship, so I won't overstep too much!
Long story short, if you're unsure on whether you really want to see this movie or not, hear it from me who saw it twice:
Go Watch Elemental!!! You will not regret it!!!

hot take that’s a few weeks old by now but Hank Henshaw is absolutely being cancelled on metropolis Twitter after Most Eligible Superman. The man stormed out of a charity event for sick children because he simply Could Not Stop being space-racist.
fuckin spaceman spiff over there should be getting roasted alive in the town square for this and Superman needs a better pr team because his current one just letting that go with some vaguely sad faces is the reason we can’t have nice things.

My mom played the news report about that plane crash in D.C. on her Alexa, and it was Fox News.
The broadcast kept going past the crash.
Here are some highlights:
They're sending Mexicans to Guantanamo. (The Act states that the government will deport and prison any "illegals" that have committed a crime and send them to Guantanamo)
They're going to crack down on people giving transgender surgeries to children. (The only children that are being forcefully transed are Intersex babies... Where's THEIR protection? Fuck off)
RFK is going to abolish vaccines. (Not the exact quote, but I became preoccupied with punching a wall at that point)
In the year of our lord, 2025, when infinite information is at our fingertips, it's sickening how people make the choice to be so ignorant.

UK Visa Refusals: General Grounds Explained
The United Kingdom’s visa application process is a complex and often daunting endeavor. One crucial aspect applicants need to understand is the potential grounds for refusal, especially when it comes to deception. The ramifications of presenting false information, documents, or misrepresentations can be severe, including automatic refusal of the current application and, in cases related to entry…

Hey did you see the post on ovarit about middle east men beating up a lesbian couple in Canada? Is the news true? How do you find out if it's true or not? The comments on there are something else...
The article:
https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/middle-eastern-men-beat-lesbian-celebrating-birthday-canada/
The ovarit post:
https://ovarit.com/o/WomensLiberation/573777/mob-of-middle-eastern-men-brutally-beat-lesbian-couple-out-celebrating-a-birthda
yeah the story is true, tho that source i find quite iffy bc i know hate crimes by white men wouldn't start with the headline "white men beat lesbian" for example, it would just say "gang of men" instead bc race isn't considered note-worthy if its a white person
i hope they receive justice. theres some absolutely deranged men out there who don't know how to act normally and get violent when theyre barely provoked
also the fact that in no part of any of the articles was these men's religion mentioned, yet ppl in the comments in ovarit made it about muslims and how dangerous muslims r... this is why i keep saying that ppl just use muslim as a way to disguise their racism. even tho clearly, on ovarit, theres no need to disguise any of it and u can openly talk about how wrong it is to support refugees escaping their countries

not sorry bc im drinking so of course im gonna talk about labor and culture issues. anyway i dont wanna say blue collar workers are more real bc thats an unfair generalization but my coworkers at the factory would always offer rides home and just be generally upfront with me and i never felt blindsided by anything. meanwhile at my current job everyone talks in fucking riddles and hides disdain through sarcasm and i have to wait until my quarterly meetings with my manger to figure out if im completely fucked or not.
