Trump indicted in federal classified documents probe
Special counsel Jack Smith has spent months investigating Trump’s retention of sensitive national security information at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
"Former President Trump said his attorneys were informed by the Justice Department on Thursday that a grand jury indictment had been obtained."
"Trump immediately began fundraising off the news, issuing an email appeal to donors under the heading “BREAKING: INDICTED,” even as he railed against the charges and rebuked the Justice Department.
“I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States,” Trump said in a statement. “I am an innocent man.”
"Even before he received news of the indictment on Thursday, Trump sought to mobilize his allies and prepared attacks on the Justice Department.
He spoke earlier in the day with, among other people, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) about GOP investigations and oversight, according to a person familiar with the calls who was not authorized to speak about them publicly. After the indictment came down, Trump made more calls to allies both on and off the Hill to discuss the developments. His political team was with him at his golf club in New Jersey."

"The former president now faces legal peril in two separate jurisdictions and justice systems — following the indictment on 34 counts of falsifying business records in March by a grand jury in Manhattan working closely with District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Trump has pleaded not guilty in that felony bookkeeping case centered on hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in the waning weeks of the 2016 race for the White House.
Trump has denied having had an affair with Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, although he has admitted reimbursing Cohen for money paid to her.
A prosecutor in Fulton County, Ga., is leading a third investigation into Trump's alleged efforts to pressure state election officials there."
The indictment against former President Trump is seven counts and includes willful retention of info related to national defense, at least one false statements charge, and at least one charge related to obstruction, according to a source with knowledge of the charges.

Almost thirty-four years after Donald Trump took out a full-page ad in New York newspapers calling for the return of the death penalty in the wake of the case of a group of young African-American men branded the “Central Park Five”, and a few days after Trump was charged with thirty-four felony counts, one of the now-Exonerated Five took out a full-page ad of his own. The full text follows:
BRING BACK JUSTICE & FAIRNESS. BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR HARLEM!
On May 1, 1989, almost thirty-four years ago, Donald J. Trump spent $85,000 to take out full-page ads in The New York Times, New York Daily News, New York Post and New York Newsday, calling for the execution of the Central Park Five — an act he has never apologized for, even after someone else confessed to and was convicted of the crime, the convictions of all five of us were overturned, and we were renamed the Exonerated Five.
Instead, Mr. Trump has often doubled-down. A few weeks after taking out the ad, he went on CNN and stated: "I hate these people and let's all hate these people because maybe hate is that we need if we're gonna get something done."
Even after our exoneration and acknowledgment by the government that we had been wrongfully convicted, Mr. Trump continued to incite animus against me, my peers and our families. In 2013 — over a decade after our exoneration — Trump called the Ken and Sarah Burns Central Park Five documentary "a one-sided piece of garbage," and when asked how he felt now that we were shown to be innocent, responded: "Innocent of what?"
In 2014, the City of New York finally reached a settlement with the members of the Exonerated Five, awarding at compensation to help us rebuild our lives after so many years were taken from us. But even that acknowledgement from the city wasn't enough for Trump to see five young Black and Latino men as anything other than criminals, saying "settling doesn't mean innocence."
Note, after several decades and an unfortunate and disastrous presidency, we all know exactly who Donald J. Trump is — a man who seeks to deny justice and fairness for others, while claiming only innocence for himself.
Being wrongfully convicted as a teenager was an experience that changed my life drastically. Yet I am honored when people express how deeply they connect with my story.
It matters because, while my experience may have been extreme, I have lived through a form of trauma that many of us experience in some way every day throughout our country. My past is an example of systemic oppression imposed by the injustice system.
But the problems our community faced when my name was splashed across the newspapers a generation ago — inadequate housing, underfunded schools, public safety concerns, and a lack of good jobs — became worse during Donald Trump's time in office.
I am trying to change that, by working with so many other dedicated community members to build a better future for everyone, both here in Harlem and across the country.
Here is my message to you, Mr. Trump: In response to the multiple federal and state criminal investigations that you are facing, you responded by warning of "potential death and destruction," and by posting a photograph of yourself with a baseball bat, next to a photo of Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. These actions, just like your actions leading up to the January 6 insurrection at the U .S. Capitol, are an attack on our safety.
Thirty-four years ago, your full-page ad stated, in all caps: "CIVIL LIBERTIES END WHEN AN ATTACK ON OUR SAFETY BEGINS."
You were wrong then, and you are wrong now. The civil liberties of all Americans are grounded in the U.S. Constitution, and many of us fight every day to uphold those rights, even in the face of those like you who seek to obliterate them.
Now that you have been indicted and are facing criminal charges, I do not resort to hatred, bias or racism — as you once did.
Even though thirty-four years ago you effectively called for my death and the death of four other innocent children, I wish you no harm.
Rather, I at putting my faith in the judicial system to seek out the truth. I hope that you exercise your civil liberties to the fullest, and that you get what the Exonerated 5 did not get — a presumption of innocence, and a fair trial.
And if the charges are proven and you are found guilty, I hope that you endure whatever penalties are imposed with the same strength and dignity that the Exonerated Five showed as we served our punishment for a crime we did not commit.

People are acting like trump's trial is going to make him more popular and win him another term, but I don't see it. He lost the presidency in 2020 by the exact same margin in the electoral college as he "won" in 2016, and his handpicked candidates consistently lose vital races. Democrats lost the House in 2022, but made gains in the Senate AND flipped multiple state legislatures AND held all the swing state Secretary of State and Attorney General seats. Michigan flipped both houses blue, Pennsylvania flipped one house blue, Wisconsin flipped their Supreme Court, Dems held their own in Arizona and Georgia, all because voters were sick of trump and didn't want his cronies to be in charge anymore. Florida is a lost cause and Virginia appears to be trending that way, but trump isn't nearly as popular as the media wants everyone to think he is. He always says "I got more votes than any sitting president in history, almost 75 million," which is only impressive on paper if you don't know that the population grows, and he leaves out the fact that Joe Biden holds the record for most votes ever, over 80 million. I'm not gonna stand here and say that 2024 is going to be a blue wave by any stretch of the imagination. I think we're gonna lose the Senate which is the single most important thing about the following presidential term (JUDGES!), but the House is competitive and Kevin McCarthy is unpopular, and Biden is at an advantage because he's stable and hasn't dropped the ball nearly as hard as trump did in 2020 (covid and the George Floyd protests and skyrocketing unemployment, 2020 felt like the apocalypse).
I think 2024 will be closer than 2020, but I don't think the republicans will be able to win. Voters rebuked them across the board in 2022 (the House was gerrymandered in their favor, including illegal maps in Ohio and North Carolina that were struck down by their respective Supreme Courts but which the legislatures used anyway, and yet they only gained 9 seats in what was expected to be a 30 or 40 seat blowout). I'm optimistic, though not enthusiastic, and I'm ready for disappointment, but I honestly think trump is going to get his ass handed to him. He will try to run again in 2028 (though he'll probably be a convicted felon by then), and even though he'll have been responsible for republican losses in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024, magats will still worship at his feet. Federal prosecution will not make him more popular with independents, and he doesn't have any important secretaries of state in his pocket to deny the vote to Democrats. The only people stupid enough to believe his bullshit and take his side on the documents case are people who are already in his court to begin with.
He is incapable of growing an audience. He's a one-trick pony, he keeps "playing the hits" but people are bored and want new material.

I'm confused as to how the legal system works at times. Let me get this straight:
Trump was indicted. He arrived in NY, was arrested and arraigned.
34 FELONIES!
And now he gets to go back to Mar-a-lago? They're letting him go home after arresting him on 34 felonies?
I'm very confused as to why he gets to go home.

Touching our person seek we no revenge;
But we our kingdom's safety must so tender,
Whose ruin you have sought, that to her laws
We do deliver you.
