Unlocking Pipers Backstory part 1

-She's native and vegetarian

*I have Opinions on both Native American portrayal in Media, and Vegetarianism.

Piper is having a dream. It's a memory of her last day with her dad. They have managed to find an isolated beach Villa. She figures something is going to ruin it, paparazzi, fangirls wanting an autograph with permanent marker, something, but it's an enjoyable moment. He's teaching her how to surf. It's a nice moment. 

I wonder if in the future, Piper and Percy will have a surfing competition. 

Piper is not a natural surfer, but still flushes with pride whenever her dad gives her a compliment. Her dad is a bizarrely good surfer, who has no surfing background. 

She might have given it up, except it allows her to spend time with her dad. 

Piper reveals she loves PBJ, and wishes her dad made it for her, rather than the Extra personal chef, who wraps it in gold leaf. 

She's also a vegetarian, because the smell of slaughterhouse makes her throw up. 

Alright fine. We all have our reasons for our diet choices. I want to see Piper being careful and asking after ingredients in foods, making sure that the pie she accepts doesn't have a crust made with lard and the like. And maybe at least one instance of her praying to the porcelain gods, and her friends getting super angry on her behalf, because someone lied about the vegetarian friendliness of the food. 

I know Grover was also a vegetarian, but he was also a goat, and could eat tin cans and the like. I have different stomach expectations from him. 

I have three vegetarian family members, and  eat enough with them often enough to know that they consider their food choices carefully. And I get to hear the stories of people who don't consider some kind of meat, as meat, and how my cousin spent the night throwing up from that ignorance when their stomach rejected it. 

Disrespecting dietary needs hurts people, and fiction is a safe place to explore and educate people about the hows and why's. And people are far likelier to remember its bad effects if it happens to a fave fictional character. 

The dream/ memory continues, and the further in we go, we see that Piper and her Dad don't have great communication.  

Piper wants regular clothes. But more than that, she wants his attention. She's hacked off her hair deliberately, she steals, she gets kicked out of schools she doesn't like. 

This is the first time alone she has had with him in three months. The trip was a pleasant surprise.  She hasn't told him about stealing a BMW yet because, she didn't want to ruin the moment. 

She starts to bring it up. Her dad notices her serious face, and decides to play 'Any Three Questions'. A game where the participants must answer any three questions posed honestly. The rest of the time, her dad stays out of her business, which isn't hard, Piper notes, as he's never around. 

Piper takes the opportunity to ask about her mother. "Do you think she's still alive?"

He starts with a Cherokee story from her grandpa Tom. 

If you walked far enough towards the sunset, you would come to Ghost Country, where you could talk to the dead. A long time ago, you could bring the dead back, but mankind messed up. Its a long story. 

Piper cuts in to make a comparison to the land of the dead. About a year ago, her Dad had taken on a role of an ancient Greek King. He included her in his reading of the legends, and they had a fun time together. It helped her feel closer to her Dad for a time, but like everything it didn't last. 

Her Dad agrees on the similarities between the Greek and Cherokee. 

I have to wonder what's up with Piper and her Dad. Did Rick do his research, based on papers his kids wrote years ago? I have to wonder?

What's up with Tristen? He's kind of living his reality far away from his Native heritage. And I have to wonder if that's generational. 

Let me imagine a backstory, based on talks I've attended, and native bibliographies I've read. Tristan's mom was a residential school victim. She gets out, and has the reaction of pretending to be a different ethnicity (as I have heard some people did). She marries a white man, after an unplanned pregnancy. Tristen grows up rather divorced from his culture, but given how his mom does act about it, maybe it's better that way. She tries really hard to be anything else, and gets weird about sending him to school, so he keeps it quiet. Grows up, becomes famous, and does as an adult try to learn about his culture. He meets a relative of his mothers who grew up in Cherokee culture, and calls him father. He's having trouble connecting himself to his culture between being a famous person, and being raised to pretend to be anything else. Then, unexpectedly, he becomes a father. And He's not ready to be a father, but He's trying. He's not taking on Native roles, because he feels he's not the person for that, and He's trying to teach Piper their heritage, but between him not sure himself how he connects to his culture, and being a Famous Absentee parent, Piper grows up a little more personally connected to it, but also in a lot of ways, just as clueless as him to the nuance of it. Her grandfather dies of cancer, as often not even money can fix that. 

There is a tragedy in them both missing on the messed up notes in his decision to send Piper to boarding school. Tristen never thought to ask Thomas when he was alive. 

Ok now that I've done that, let's go check the wiki.

No. He doesn't know enough about his culture or other people in his community for me to buy this backstory. He makes far more sense as an adult trying to find a connection, but not sure how to bring it into his life. 

Did you research that Rick? I admit, mine is probably more suited to a fanfiction than a novel, but maybe read a native american bibliography or two before writing a backstory for one. Get a cultural consultant. If friggin Ubisoft will get a culture consultant for Assassin's Creed iii, you should be able to write for one to get a culture consultation! Even if you didn't do it for the first one you SHOULD HAVE going forward in the series. For someone who likes to use other cultures myths as a structure and key part of their stories, you should know how to reach out to experts and collaborate! Generational trauma is not a buzzword, it's something that affects the culture to this day. 

People got out of res school, and they drank to forget the abuse , and even when the residential schools were over, they still took kids and fostered them to other families. That's not the story for everyone, but it is an important part of the story for a lot. 

"Before 1978, approximately 80 percent of Native American families living on reservations lost at least one child to the foster care system, according to data compiled by National Indian Child Welfare Association. Additionally, more than 25 percent of all Native children were removed from their families, with 85 percent receiving placements outside of their tribes or relatives.

“And that was even if there was no abuse — there were no issues occurring,” Lowden said. “Even if there were willing and fit family members available, these children were still adopted out to white families.”-

"These policies continue to negatively impact individuals, families and tribes. Non-tribal placement and adoption has created identity issues and disconnected feelings along with negative mental health outcomes.

It was an attempted genocide, and so much has been lost for it. You were a teacher Rick, would you let your students pull that? Not that I actually expect him to read this, but I'm here to talk with imaginary Rick, not real one, as I would probably not be this upfront on most of the things with most of the people I know or meet irl. I'm better at writing fire than spitting it.

Anyway, the story wraps up, and Piper concludes that he thinks her mom is dead. She corrects him, and says that he doesn't know if shes dead but she might as well be. She also reminds on her dads inner sadness that's apparently attractive to women, and her dad tells her that he doesn't really believe in ghost countries and the like. That he would always be looking to blame. Success does not make her dad happy. Neither will the upcoming news from his assistant Jane.

Piper tries prayer, but it is ineffective. Piper tries to confess, but is too slow. Jane seems partly annoyed, partly triumphant, which tells Piper shes been in contact with the Police. I hope she is not trying to get in his pants.

So Piper looses the chance to tell him her side of the story, and the day is ruined. Jane gives Piper a look "like she was a disgusting pet that had whizzed on the carpet." Add that one to the eventual bingo.

So Tristen comes back with betrayal in his eyes. "You said you would try"Piper claims she hates the school and was going to mention the car. Tristen tells her he could have gotten her any car she wanted.Piper says that it would have been Jane getting her the car, and the point of it is she wants his attention. He says we've talked about this, but as far as Piper is concerned he talked about it, and it hasn't been a conversation.

She's going to boarding school for problem children, much as he tries to word it differently. He asks her what else is he to do after she let him down.

The connotations of going to boarding school for a child of native decent (yikes! Yikes!! YIKES!!!) Are not touched upon. She says anything, as long as its him doing something, not Jane. Tristen chooses Delegation. The day is over, and he looks off into the ocean. Jane has the details, Jane has the plane ticket. Piper does her best not to cry.

I get aphrodite's reasoning, but I can't say I agree completely with it. It is sometimes too much for a mortal to bear, that's true. But leaving him only memories of losing the one he loved for unexplained reasons…well, that's so sad. I get it, Aphrodite. I do get it, and I even respect that Tristan McLean willingly agrees to have his memories taken away later. But i still think it's a little bit too sad for me to feel comfortable with it.

On an interesting note, it reminds me of a comic book character: Jane Foster. In the 60s, Jane Foster almost married Don Blake/Thor, but seeing Asgard was too much for her fragile mind, and Odin has to wipe her memories in order for her to not be a paranoid wreck all her life. I suppose Jane and Piper's dad have something in common.

Marco "Cruz" Klein-Valdez, born April 15th 2007 in Winchester, Virginia, his family moved back to Grundale, Connecticut in 2012.

He is 5'7, was diagnosed with ADHD at 8 and is bisexual.

Marco can only be described as a troubled teenager, he has anger issues and he's overall seen as weird and creepy for the way he dresses and acts. If you asked him, people are just overreacting and they're the weird one for not trying to be friendly to him, but he's actually not really friendly to anyone.

He gets into fight a lot and has been sent to the principal's office for fights, swearing and wearing inapproriate shirts. Even if he prides himself for not being a like everyone else, he suffers a lot from his loneliness and struggles with self hatred. He's aware that he's being a moron to people but thinks no one would like him anyway, so why bother ?

Marco is also a guy with a bad case of toxic masculinity, as the story goes he learns that crying doesn't make him weak or that his attraction to men isn't a bad thing. His violent demeanor is a direct consequence of that mindset, he also hates his father for making him like this because he was always shamed when expressing any kind of emotion beside anger.

Sadly, he also have a fucked up relationship with sex in a way that makes him sound like a creep most of the time. This part of him is mostly witnessed by Tristan who kind of has to pull him out of his weird habits (and has to suffer everything he has to say regarding this topic)

Tristan Lambert, born February 23rd 2007 in Grundale, Connecticut.

He is 6'4, was diagnosed autistic at 11 one year after his mother died and is gay.

Tristan is a rather reserved individual who tends to blend in with people despite his height. He has a hard time making friend because he never really understood how to talk to people growing up and also because he spent most of his middle school years having selective mutism and depression.

He had a tendency to forget others can perceive him because he's so used of being a nobody that he doesn't understand why someone would remember him. He would rather ignore the things around him because otherwise it would make him anxious.

When unmasking, Tristan is a lot more talkative and even become more sarcastic. He often pokes fun at Marco especially if he's being openly stupid at something, he's also the only one who is actively smacking his head when Marco says something dumb, also because he knows he has some privileges around Marco that no one will ever have.

Joshua "Josh" Roberts, born November 5th 2006 in Grundale, Connecticut.

He is 5'11 and has a older brother named Logan (born 2003) in college.

Josh is part of the popular kids in their grade, he put a lot of effort in making himself likeable and nice looking, he goes along with pretty much anything even if it means being part of bullies. He's not proud of that but since he's not actively being mean to others, he thinks he gets a pass in his behavior.

In reality, Josh is a people pleaser who's scared of being alone, he does things that will make people like him so he'll always be part of a group. He wants to fit in so badly he'd rather represses what makes him weird in order to be with people he doesn't like than being himself and living hs own life. That would eventually lead him to identity crisis because he doesn't actually know who he is truly.

Despite him never publically making fun of people, he found himself clashing with Marco outside of school because he's envious of the fact that Marco is unapologetically being himself. He doesn't understand why the weird guy can openly say he hates everyone without fearing the consequences of his actions.

Tyler Giesler, born January 1st 2007 in Sante Fe, Texas. His family moved to Grundale, Connecticut in 2021, right before he started high school.

He is 6'2, is autistic and has two younger sister : Lucille who is non verbal (7, born 2015) and Miley (1, born 2021)

Tyler is a pretty monotone and inexpressive guy, he doesn't talk that much unless people talk to him first. He's also pretty blunt and always says what's on his mind without taking into account people's feeling or the context.

He has an extensive knowledge about human psychology and tends to observe people, with that he knows a lot about others without having to talk to them and remembers a lot about them. He struggles with empathy and uses this knowledge as a way to counter his lack of empathy, recognising when people are sad or upset even if he doesn't necessarily understand why they would feel this way. He's pretty disconected with his own feelings too and often forgets to eat or to do basics task because he doesn't feel the need to do them.

This is why when he interacts with more people, he found himself acting as the main character of his own life who has to experience himself the things he previously thought were interesting to observe in others.

Klara "KKK" Klein, born September 11th 2008 in Newtown, Connecticut. She is Marco's cousin. She's 5'4, her father is Franz Klein who is the younger brother of Bernhard, Marco's father.

She's Marco number one hater as they were both forced of seeing each others during family gathering but they also were in the same middle school and now the same high school. They both have very strong personalities that keep clashing. In the end, they don't actually hate each others, she just thinks Marco should stop being a creep.

She's annoyed by a lot of things and doesn't seem to like much beside her friends and sports. If she's completely honest with herself, she's just scared of being judged by people and comes off as loud so people see her as confident.

-Marco nicknamed her "KKK" because her full name is Klara Kate Klein.

Kipley "Kip Seven" Mercado, born July 10th 2008 in Grundale, Connecticut. He's non binary and uses he/they, he also has a younger sister (10, born 2012) He's 5'1.

Kip is a self proclaimed agent of chaos, a kid who spent too much time on the internet but who couldn't be bothered by what people think of him. He's very clingy and when someone talks to him, he thinks that means they're friends and will probably follow them everywhere. He tends to be overly dramatic and theatrical, being pretty obviously a theater kids.

He's always friendly to people even if he knows he's annoying. People makes fun of him of his cringe behavior and crazy scene or colorful outfit.

Carmen Diaz, born in 2007 in Santa Fe, Texas from an afro-mexican family. She is Tyler's best friend. She's 5'7.

Carmen is the opposite of Tyler, she's talkative and speak her mind freely, often mocking people around her and teasing them. She has friends outside of Tyler but stuck with him most of their time together because he was funnier to hang out with due to his strange behaviors. She always tries to find a way to make him react and but always fails because he's used to her being annoying.

David is the extraverted nerd everybody knows about, he's smart and likes to be in charge of a lot of things which leads him to be the unofficial class representative of his grade.

Ariane Faust, born in 2007 in Anchorage, Alaska. She's 6'1, she's also a trans girl.

Ariane moves to Connecticut in her sophomore year of high school and quickly meets David. She's a pretty calm girl who doesn't like raising her voice too much.

Brian Duncan, born in 2007 in Grundale, Connecticut. He has an older sister.

Brian is a friend of Josh and one of the popular guys, he's obnoxious and loud, not very smart but tends to still care about his friends. He's the main bully of Marco and later Tristan, but most importantly, the one behind the nickname "Cruz" that the whole school uses to talk about Marco.

Mason Smith, born 2007 in Connecticut.

One of Josh's friend, well it's complicated sometimes, he's a jock and one of the main bully along with Brian.

Kevin Nong, born in 2007 in New Jersey.

Usually follow Mason and Brian because he wants to be with the cool guys and get all the advantages of being with them. Flirts with Kelly and is a rival of Josh. Mostly target Tristan in his bullying and calls him the r-word.

Kelly Mcgee, born in 2007 in New Jersey.

She's Josh friend, well, girlfriend, well no that's still not it, situationship ? sex friend ? Even he doesn't know.

Courtney Garcia, born in 2007 in Grundale, Connecticut.

Friend of Kelly, flirts with Mason.

Maria Venturi, born in 2007 in Grundale, Connecticut. She was Marco's crush from childhood throughout middle school up until 8th grade. She's also the daughter of a neighbord's friend of Dalisay.

She was one of Marco's rare friends before high school, she stopped being friend with him around 8th grade because of how weird he was and because she didn't want people to get the wrong idea about them. He didn't took it well, flipped her off and told her he'd jerk off to her anyway (he regretted it like imediately after saying it but it was too late lol)

They meet again in their sophomore year, he tries to make peace with her with a handshake that she refused for obvious reasons. They do start speaking to each other again despite all that.

Richard "Rich" Brown, born in 2007 in Grundale, Connecticut.

Richard is in the same grade as everyone else, known loser and weeb, Brian calls him "Sticky hands" for various reasons but the most notable one is because he allegedly jerked it in class one day but keeps denying everything.

Families

Dalisay Valdez, born in 1974 in the Philippines, her family moved to the US in the state if California in 1989 when she was 15. She's 5'1 and has two younger brothers.

Dalisay would like to describe herself as a simple woman living a pretty normal life, she's an active member of the church in her neighborhood and is friendly towards everyone she meets.

Unfortunately, she is Marco's mother and her good image is forever linked with all the stupid things he does. She was always ready to face everything God would put in her way, especially with having to deal with a teenage boy, but she wasn't ready for this.

As an heavy catholic, Dalisay has to try to understand her troubled son who doesn't seem to be reasoned with so she has to pretend she doesn't see his hentais under his bed.

She is part of a mother of troubled teen support group were she often clashes with a woman called Becky. The more you know about Dalisay, the more you understand where Marco's temperament is from. Despite all of her best attempts, Dalisay has a lot of repressed anger that she's ashamed of, her whole life is a disapointement to her own mother and she was never enough.

Bernhard Klein, born in 1968 in West Germany (American occupation zone), his family moved to the US in 1974 when he was 6. He's 5'9 and has one younger brother (Franz Klein, born 1974) and one younger sister (Amelia Klein, born 1980)

Bernhard is not that much present in the story, as he is also not present in his own son's life despite living in the same house.

He's behind most of Marco's traumatic experience and toxic masculinity. He's a stoic man who was in the army, and never tried to connect with his son and if he did when he was a child, Marco would always mysteriously come back with a broken wrist.

Michael Lambert, born in 1982 in France, his family moved to the US in the state of Idaho in 1994 when he was 12. He is Tristan's father.

Michael was always a awkward man growing up, he never thought that being a single father would be so confusing.

For some reason, despite him not knowing anything, he still has the best relationship with his son out of every parents of the story. He simply tries his best and tries to be there for Tristan, often doing activities together like cooking, watching horror movies and going camping.

Jane "James" Anderson, born in 1983 in Idaho. She is Tristan's mother and died by suicide in 2017 at 34 when Tristan was 10.

Jane was always the oddball, her and Michael met in high school and were high school sweethearts. She was mostly known for her unpredictable personnality and somewhat reckless behavior during high school and then struggled a lot finding her place in an adult world. The world is mean to people who are different, and she couldn't handle it. Childbirth had been imbearable, she wanted to love her son the way every mother did, but she couldn't find the motherly side of her, everything just hurt instead.

Tristan remembers his mother fondly. Jane always tried to be there and would talk to him as if he was an adult, she used to call him "little stickbug".

Tristan often wondered if she was autistic just like him, and if she knew she wouldn't have felt so lost all her life.

Franz Klein, born in 1974, he's Bernhard and Amalia's brother and the father of Klara.

Amalia Klein, born in 1980, she's Bernhard and Franz younger sister and Klara and Marco's aunt. She has a son.

Scott Roberts, born in 1980, he's Josh and Logan's father.

Logan Roberts, born in 2003, he's Josh's older brother and is in college. He cut off his family.

Murry Giesler, born in 1976, he's Tyler's father.

Adelaide "Addie" Hart, born in 1988, she's Tyler's mother.

Lucille Giesler, born in 2015, she's Tyler's younger sister who's non verbal autistic.

6th year's musings

A small indulgence... that is also my first official ship art of them, hope you like my debut!!!

Note about her design if you care enough to read:

I had always wanted Tristan (my MC) to have short hair, and she would have it after the events in the game.

But... i wanted to wrap up the comic series i unintentionally started before I could draw her the way i wanted to... so i suppose this piece could be considered a snippet or a small glimpse in the future where she's a 6th year student in hogwarts.

There would be no dating for her during that time, probably... I intend on giving her the slowest burn of all the slowburns. She will learn how to yearn jane austen style teehee

I get aphrodite's reasoning, but I can't say I agree completely with it. It is sometimes too much for a mortal to bear, that's true. But leaving him only memories of losing the one he loved for unexplained reasons…well, that's so sad. I get it, Aphrodite. I do get it, and I even respect that Tristan McLean willingly agrees to have his memories taken away later. But i still think it's a little bit too sad for me to feel comfortable with it.

On an interesting note, it reminds me of a comic book character: Jane Foster. In the 60s, Jane Foster almost married Don Blake/Thor, but seeing Asgard was too much for her fragile mind, and Odin has to wipe her memories in order for her to not be a paranoid wreck all her life. I suppose Jane and Piper's dad have something in common.

it doesn't really answer the question per se because it's more a strange parallel/coincidence more than anything else in their lives but there's something like that about Marco/Tristan relationship and Michael/Jane's relation (Tristan's parents) Jane died by hanging herself when Tristan was 10 but before Marco and Tristan met, Marco had attempted suicide and there's this whole thing where Tristan is aware that he could very much lose his boyfriend like that just how he lost his mom, which is not a deja vu in the proper way but more like trauma ringing like "it could happen again"

Hi!! I adore your blog, your posts are a breath of fresh air on my dash. I have a quick niche fandom question for you if you have the time!

Do you prefer the 2020 ACGAS or the 1978 adaptation more? I grew up with the ‘78 series and I think I’m a little hesitant to try the new series as to not “overwrite” the memories I have of the old one. Also, if you’re into Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility?

I grew up with the books (read at age 10 and a huge impact on how I internalized my masculinity), but only binged both TV series late last year. Because, like you, I had nostalgia and was worried neither show would live up to my expectations.

That said, I adore both shows for different reasons.

1978: I like the variety of animal cases, and it's kind of wild to see animal scenes that would in no way be permitted to be filmed today. We get to see a lot more of the side characters, including one of my favs, Granville Bennett. I like how Siegfried is such a little shit and enjoy subplots like the guinea fowls. I like how the farmers feel more rooted in an older time, especially via their language. The production values are very homey /pos.

2020: I like how the characters change and grow over time and how the women have things to do. The side characters we do see get developed more. Audrey Hall is a fantastic addition to the cast of characters. Siegfried is far less mean (personally v. important to me to see him grow out of the worst of his temper) and his relationship with Tristan is explored as to why they are That Way. The production values are lush & gorgeous.

Both series have deep ties to the Herriot estate and are very clearly labors of love. There are book and real!person easter eggs in both shows, though they are a little harder to spot in the new since so much original material gets reworked, but they are absolutely there.

Both are extremely rewatchable and very comforting, so I'd say give the new show a shot! My mental version of the characters has become an amalgam of all three incarnations. As for Austen, I have only seen the movies, so it's Sense and Sensibility (1995) all the way, hugely in part to the cast.
