Mohinga
“Mohinga streethawker in Mandalay, the traditional style before trishawpeddlers, pavement stalls and finally restaurants have also made it available all day. On one side is the soup in a large pot, with lid and ladle, kept hot on a stove; the other carries rice vermicelli on banana leaves and covered with white muslin in a bamboo basket, with all the trimmings in pots, jars and bottles, including fritters kept crispy in a bag on the top shelf along with bowls and spoons.” - via Wikimedia Commons

Day Twenty-Three, Part Two: A Day in Chiang Mai
The trishaw ride ended at Wat Chedi Luang, site of an enormous pagoda that was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545.
A model illustrates how the pagoda originally looked.
Around the pagoda are more modern statues of the kings
and queens who played a major role in Thai history.
Cannonball Fruit trees (technically sala trees) were in bloom and laden within their massive fruit.
Now, I’d encountered Cannonball Fruit trees in Vietnam, but I hadn’t been aware of their significance then: It was under this type of tree that the Buddha is said to have been born.
We continued on to the Wat Phra Singh, where a huge golden stupa is supposed to contain relics of the Buddha.
Just as the Prabang pose was common to the Buddhas in Luang Prabang, so is the Buddha with the bhumisparsha mudra common to the images at the Wat Phra Singh. This mudra, formed with all five fingers of the right hand extended to touch the ground,
symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment.
A Buddhist monk was offering blessings to the faithful in that temple.

Rides In The City
Rides awaiting tourists in the city last year. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was taken with the camera held close to the ground. The exposure was biased darker by 2 stops to preserve sky details. During raw conversion, the shadows were then lifted to soften the effect of the harsh sun.

Day Twenty-Three, Part One: A Day in Chiang Mai
The day began at Muang Mai Market, a farmers’ market that sells everything from vegetables to school uniforms.
Among the food on display was dried shrimp,
dried fish lungs,
and a wide variety of flavored caramels.
Certain people in Thailand follow the custom of burning small paper replicas of everyday items in the belief that their deceased ancestors need these things in the next world. For example, you might consider providing your deceased grandfather with a complete outfit, including shirt, tie, credit card, Rolex, and mobile phone,
or perhaps a nice BMW,
or even an entire house.
I then got a chance to tour the old city by trishaw, a human-powered vehicle similar to the cyclos I experienced in Hanoi, with one important difference:
The Vietnamese cyclo driver pedals from the back and pushes you along. The Thai trishaw driver pedals from the front and pulls you along.
The Thai version thus limits both your view and the amount of breeze you get as you cruise along the streets.

Mohinga
“Mohinga is made available all day by a pavement stall such as this one in Mandalay, set up simply by parking a trishaw designed to carry a huge cauldron of fish soup on a stove and other ingredients. Rice vermicelli, boiled eggs, and split chickpea fritters (pè gyan gyaw) in a bag also shown in the photo.” - via Wikimedia Commons

Concept Art | Developing Transportation and Technology
Before getting into the next segment of storyboarding, I wanted to start developing the various types of technology and transportation systems that exist in-universe. They would be as follows;
Trishaw (Tuk-Tuk)
Bicycle
Bicycle Rack
Bus
Bus Stop
Solar Celled Glass
I will go into detail on each of these in the finalised art. To begin, as usual, I began with a base sketch. I took inspiration from various styles of Solarpunk and Steampunk technology, particular those which took inspiration themselves from Art Nouveau. I also took lots of inspiration from nature and organic forms. This was because I wanted to contrast the physical forms of Colombo against the more synthetic and artificial imagery seen in the office.
After this, I went in and lined everything. Since the Tuk-Tuk was the most important prop here in relation to the story, I decided to splice and examine it from all angles. The bicycle is also important, but since it's form is relatively thin, I didn't need to examine it in the same way as the Tuk-Tuk.

For the arts is what makes life worth living and the hope for a brighter future what we dream
Building the society up where everyone is able to earn livable wages in safe jobs would be great. The whole point of advancing technology is to help humanity with jobs too dangerous and risky. In turn, people working those jobs should be able to be employed at safer better paying jobs. In fact as more jobs become obsolete, new types of jobs will be created as demand for other services grows. That is what history has shown us. Take carriages/ trishaws and cars for example. That is what I hope will result from tech advancements at least.
We must not let our tools control our humanity. Likewise not treat humanity as tools.
Side note: capitalism is scary for all the side effects but would you and I be able to live without all it's benefits. The part that scares me is that I cannot see the world without it and in turn am just another part of this grand downfall.
I’m not anti-technology, I just think there’s something deeply sick about a society where robots make art and children work in factories.
