9 July, OAK @ BOS, 9-12, win
I can’t decide whether that was a super weird game or a super duper fucking weird game. Bello gave up the lead early, in the top of the first… then the Sox come back and take the lead in the bottom of the first… then Bello settles down in the top of the second and then in the bottom of the second the Red Sox lineup unleashed a furious barrage of runs upon the Athletics from which the visitors would not recover. Though they came a little close for comfort. After the second, with thunderstorms in the distance, I was worried rain would cut the game short before they could close the book on it. It wasn’t all smooth sailing and back-to-back dingers. Bello had a bunch of strikeouts but he also gave up five runs and newly acquired reliever Trey Wingenter (fun fact: you have to play Major League Baseball with that name: you aren’t allowed to do anything else professionally) gave up a three-run bomb in the 9th thus placing the hearts of every Sox fan who though the game was a done deal firmly in their throats. It was not a cake walk. But it was hella fun to watch (playing a Cali team I feel entirely justified in using the term “hella” don’t @ me) and there were plenty of bright sides.
Brayan Bello might have given up five runs but the first 10 outs he made were strikeouts, which is fucking nuts. Also a team record in the expansion era. He struck out 11 in five and a third innings. That three-run dinger he gave up in the top of the sixth kinda sucked because without it that was a legendary appearance. I’m going to say he’s still improving.
Raffy Devers is the best version of himself right now. His average is up to .296, he went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored (he got all that done in the first two innings - lol) and is looking every bit the all star. I’m hoping this is the year the rest of the league finally accepts what Sox fans have known for years. Carita is a badass.
Wilyer Abreu busted out of his slump with a three run homer in the second and a sac fly in the eighth. He was 1-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Him getting hot would be good now.
Every Sox starter had at least the one hit.
We didn’t make any errors.
Dave Hamilton continues his upward trend. He went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Ceddanne Rafaela hit a fucking triple! His fourth of the season. He went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
Masa Yoshida went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI, and he took a walk too.
Dom Smith hit a dinger right after Wilyer Abreu in the second, going back-to-back. He had that one hit but scored twice. He scored twice in the second inning, in fact, because he walked to start the bottom of the second and was knocked in by Ceddanne’s triple. How cool is that?!
Six of the 8 runs in the second came with two outs.
We won!
We started a home stand with a win, which hasn't happened very much!
Maybe we'll win again tonight!

Tigers Take Care Of Twins.
Twins 5 Tigers 9 W-Holton (1-2) L-Ober (6-6) SV-Cisnero (2)
The Minnesota Twins hot offense was shutout last night by Eduardo Rodriguez and the Tigers bullpen. The team looked to get back on track tonight in Detroit. The Tigers were ready from the start as Riley Greene drew a one-out walk and Matt Vierling singled to right. Kerry Carpenter plated a pair with a base hit to right. The ball got past Max Kepler and the Tigers had a two-run lead after an inning of play. The Twins answered in the second as Carlos Correa belted an Alex Faedo fastball out to left-center for a solo homer. Later in the inning, Ryan Jeffers doubled and Joey Gallo crushed an Alex Faedo fastball out to right for a two-run homer. This put the Twins up by a run and the Tigers responded in the bottom of the second. Zach McKinstry started it with a one-out double to left and Eric Haase singled. Riley Greene tied the game with a single to center and Matt Vierling dumped a single to left. Two runs scored and Detroit regained the lead. The Tigers added to their lead in the fifth as Spencer Torkelson hammered a Bailey Ober slider out to right for a solo homer. The Twins inched closer in the sixth as Matt Wallner was hit in the foot by a pitch. Willi Castro doubled him home to get the Twins within a run. The Tigers got that run back as Spencer Torkelson walloped a Jordan Balazovic curveball out to left-center for a solo home run. Miguel Cabrera and Zach McKinstry followed with singles. Eric Haase lined a run-scoring single to left to extend the Tigers lead to three. The Tigers added two more in the eighth and Trey Wingenter slowly loaded up the bases in the ninth. Max Kepler delivered a run-scoring single to left as the game continued. Carlos Correa struck out to end the game and the Tigers picked up another win tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Bailey Ober got knocked around today and it showed. He gave up four runs on eleven hits with nine strkeouts. Emilio Pagan had a scoreless sixth and Jordan Balazovic gave up three runs on six hits with a strikeout over two innings. The Twins scattered seven hits tonight. The Twins hit 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Tomorrow, Kenta Maeda faces Reese Olson in the series finale on a Thursday matinee.

Reds Roster Cuts: Akiyama, Wingenter, Knapp
Reds Roster Cuts: Akiyama, Wingenter, Knapp
The Reds have told Shogo Akiyama that he will not make the Opening Day roster, Reds GM Nick Krall told The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans and other reporters. The team has also told minor league signings Trey Wingenter and Andrew Knapp that they won’t be breaking camp. Akiyama’s three-year, $21MM contract gives him the right to decline a minor league assignment, and he already turned down a visit…

Tigers Hang On To Beat Twins.
Twins 7 Tigers 8 W-Boyd (2-0) L-Sanchez (0-2) SV-Wingenter (1)
The Minnesota Twins made the long trip up to Lakeland to play the Tigers today. The Tigers bats were ready from the start as Ryan Kreidler lined a one-out double to left in the first. Kerry Carpenter walked and Eric Haase lined a single to center for the game’s first run. Nick Maton singled and Cesar Hernandez kept the chain moving by knocking in a pair with a base hit. Andre Lipcius added an RBI groundout and Detroit led by four after an inning of play. The Tigers got back to work and a pair of ex-Twins got revenge on their old team. Jermaine Palacios led-off the second with a single and Akil Baddoo doubled. Ryan Kreidler plated them with a single to center. Kerry Carpenter followed with a single of his own and Eric Haase hit a flyball to left. The Tigers had a 7-0 lead after two innings of play. Jermaine Palacios had one more thing left to say as he took Michael Boyle deep in the third. Detroit now had an eight-run lead and their pitching tossed five scoreless innings. Brooks Lee and Trevor Larnach ignited a rally with walks. Willi Castro smacked an Alex Lange pitch out to right for a three-run homer and the Twins were on the board. The Twins got back to work in the seventh with a Ryan LaMarre walk. Later in the inning, Trevor Larnach unloaded on a Matt Wisler pitch and sent it out to right for a two-run homer. Willi Castro walked and Matt Wallner singled. Tyler White inched the Twins closer by driving in a pair with a double to left. The Twins pulled within a run after seven frames. The Tigers pitching held up as Jason Foley threw a clean eighth and Trey Wingenter struck out the side in the ninth. The Tigers were able to pick up the win against their division rivals today.
-Final Thoughts- Aaron Sanchez got knocked around by allowing seven runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Michael Boyle gave up a run in the third, Jorge Alcala struck out two over 1 2/3 innings, and Jose Bravo got out of the fifth. Griffin Jax struck out the side in the sixth, Jeff Hoffman fanned two in the seventh, and Oliver Ortega put up a zero in the eighth. The Twins hit 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Tomorrow, Tanner Tully will start against Danny Coulombe for the Twins as the Yankees remain in Fort Myers for another day.
