Mugshot Monday - "Little Red Swirl Sipper" by Travis Hinton Pottery with Rioja Reserva by Marqués de Cáceres
My wife Cindy and I had a glass of wine to celebrate her passing the first of four NCCAOM Acupuncture licensure exams!
For this exam, she had to study 170 herbal formulas and 300 single herbs. That's kinda nuts.
Btw, these herb and formula names ARE IN CHINESE. Cindy doesn't speak Chinese and is of Norwegian decent, so it was quite challenging. But she did it! 🙂
She has 3 more national board exams to go, but this one is likely the most difficult. I’m so proud of her.
I bought this awesome little cup made by Travis Hinton back in July at the MN Pottery Festival. Love Travis' work. The layers of decorative underglaze he adds is so cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I lamented not buying one of his cups at last year's festival, so I made sure I got one this year. It's perfect for a glass of wine.
Cheers! And congrats Cindy! 🎉

“Covid, pregnant women bleeding out, submerged wire on the border, psychos with guns – if people are needlessly suffering and dying in Texas, Greg Abbott is always there to throw the full weight of his office in support of whatever is killing them.” —Matt Hinton
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More than a year after a Travis County jury convicted Daniel Perry of murdering a protester in Austin, Gov. Greg Abbott pardoned the former U.S. Army sergeant on Thursday shortly after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended a full pardon.
A Texas state district court judge sentenced Perry in May 2023 to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing U.S. Air Force veteran Garrett Foster during a 2020 demonstration protesting police brutality against people of color.
One day after a jury convicted Perry, Abbott directed the parole board to review the former U.S. Army sergeant’s case.
The Board of Pardons and Paroles announced their recommendation on Thursday, stating that their decision came after a “meticulous review of pertinent documents, from police reports to court records, witness statements, and interviews with individuals linked to the case.” Governor Abbott quickly approved the recommendation, emphasizing Texas’ strong “Stand Your Ground” laws in his statement. “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” Abbott said. “I thank the Board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation.”
Abbott approved the board’s recommendation, which included restoration of Perry’s firearm rights.

★Across the Hinton-verse (Unfinished)★
“My name’s Ponyboy Curtis, you can just call me Ponyboy. It uh- Nice to meet you all!” I tried to greet, and in full honesty, I could not want to be there any less. I made eye contact with the doe-eyed boy in front of me, the kid looked like Bambi, his hair reminded me of Soda’s a little, real blond. Golden almost. His face was freckled though and he had on his whole cowboy attire. Geez, he has the hats, The boots, The jacket and everything. “Niceta’ meet you’! My names Texas McCormick but ya’ can call me Tex!” He had a hefty Southern accent. I know I got one too but Golly's was really strong! I smiled gently at him. It was real forced though, Darry told me once that I ain't be such a good actor ‘'because I ain't no good at hiding how I feel.
It was the next kid's turn to introduce himself, he looked older, maybe soda or two-bits age yeah? He had cold gray eyes, sorta like Darry’s but in some way, even Darry's cold hard eyes seemed nicer than his mean, ice cold eyes. His hair was kinda like mine longer but not long it made ya’ look like a dopper, he had dark hair, real Dark brown hair, his outfit aint too far from one us’s greasers, leather jacket and some T-shirt and jeans, think he had on a pair of boots too. “Travis” he greeted, his voice was sharp, and you coulda tell he was originally from Tulsa.
I looked at the kid to my right, he had a real strange expression on his face, puzzled. “No, you ain't. I know a Ponyboy. You ain't look like him, He’s real blond and pale, the only thing ya got in common is your weight and your eyes. You ain’t Ponyboy, The Pony I know ain’t talk like that, or at all.” He snarled, He had a real nice build, tall and strong. His hair was Brown, dark brown and it looked like Darry's, his eyes were a real dark brown too. He was real tall. If I had to guess maybe six feet at least. I side-eyed him, this guy was outta his mind. He looked like he did Maryjane too! Golly. Why was he here? Why was I even here? Correction, because Darry forced me to. I hated Darry and real lot for that, he probably only did it because he hated me a real lot in general! Gee! The conversation was so stupid man!
“Pony come here for a second” Darry called, I groaned. I was tryin’ to read the new book I got recently. It was real good. Popped my head into the kitchen, “Yeah Dar? Whatcha’ need.” I tried to force a smile. “You gotta letter. You wanna go to some place to meet some kids? I think it’ll be real good for you.” She ranted. Golly! He sounded like he wanted to send me away! I knew he couldn't stand me but to ship me off! Ugh! “You're shippin’ me off a buncha strangers??” I yelled I was real mad. He’s shippin’ me off! “What- Ponyboy. I’m sending you to go meet new people. It’ll be good for you! You need to make new friends. Maybe you’ll meet some kids your age Pony.” She rolled his eyes, explaining through his gritted teeth. “No! You wanna send me ‘way! Hell for all I know you're sending me to damn Boy home for all I know.” the next thing I know I'm on the road to this social experiment shit.
“…ok kid?” I snap my head outta the clouds as
WOWOW!!! THIS IS REALLY COOL!!!! <33333333333

12/30/2022 CFB Transfer Portal Update #3
As promised, I am going to pick 5 college football teams that I think have used the transfer portal as an advantage to help their teams as we take a diving look into the 2023-24 college football season.
Michigan Wolverines
Colorado Buffaloes
USC Trojans
Florida State Seminoles
Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan Wolverines have been among the most active teams in regard to the transfer portal as they initially saw a handful of players enter their names to leave Ann Arbor. At that, we have also seen many of the top names choose Michigan with little competitive interest in other schools. They brought in players who have multiple years of starting experience on the offensive line (Drake Nugent, LeDarius Henderson, Myles Hinton) as well 2 of the best transfer defensive linemen (George Rooks & Josaiah Stewart) along with a stout linebacker from Nebraska named Ernest Hausmann.
The Colorado Buffaloes might have the biggest roster makeover out of any team in the country since the hiring of their new head coach Deion Sanders. This far into the signing period he has already brought 6 of his former players with him from Jackson State to colorado including his son and soon-to-be starting QB for the Buffaloes along with the # 1 player in the portal Travis Hunter. Coach Prime has also done a good job adding players from other schools around the country such as Clemson, USF, and West Virginia.
The USC Trojans start up right where they left off last season, at the center of attention regarding players in the transfer portal. USC has added multiple players to fill positions of need and get better depth. They bolstered the defensive side of the ball with the additions of Christian-Roland Wallace, Kyon Barrs, Jamil Muhammad, and Mason Cobb. All 4 are proven starters and more importantly, sure-tacklers on a defense that had problems wrapping up and completing tackles. On the Offensive side of the ball, they added a top receiver from Arizona in Dorian Singer and a lineman from Florida named Michael Tarquin.
The Florida State Seminoles have had one of the biggest splashes by any program this recruiting cycle as they locked in commitments from top linemen on both sides of the ball in Jeremiah Byers and Braden Fiske as well as other big men from schools such as Miami and Colorado. My favorite player the Seminoles picked up is Tight end/H Back Jaheim Bell from South Carolina. Bell will play a big role for the FSU offense with the versatility to line up all over the field.
Michigan State has been actively adding big bodies to their team for the upcoming season. They have 3 new tight ends transferring from different schools in which they all garnered significant reps. They also added two runningbacks to their historically run-heavy offense. In my opinion, the biggest gets for the Spartans were along the defensive line where they added an interior lineman, an edge, and a guy who can play both. They will especially be tested when playing conference games next season in the blistering cold knowing they have to stop the run.
Of these 5 teams, the Michigan Wolverines and USC Trojans will most likely rely on their transfers the most while they look to hold their spots as college football bluebloods and stay in the hunt for a college football playoff berth in 2023-24.

Congratulations to all the comedians for a hilarious comedy workshop showcase last night at The Cleveland Improv. This one was funny from beginning to end - and earned BIG laughs from our "almost" sold-out audience (we were close!). Special thanks to our MC Angela Verges, show-closer Anthony Mayo AND a special surprise set (he didn't know it was coming - but good to be in the right place at the right time) from Steven Prince. Someone said I even got a few laughs, but it was just my pre-recorded laugh track (that I take everywhere with me). Next workshop starts February 18 at The Tampa Improv and then back in Cleveland this spring. Stay tuned for dates.

Denver Broncos Regular Season Game 17
Hawk Valley Regular Season Week 18 January 8, 2023
Denver Broncos vs Chargers
Quick Review
The Broncos lost to the Chiefs, 27-24. It’s another moral victory for the Broncos. The changes made by the interim head coach Jerry Rosburg seemed to work out. It was nice to see players back on the field that had entered Hacket’s dog house. Russell appears to have given up on his dream of cooking and becoming a pocket passer.
A longer review
This game took place in Kansas City on New Years day at 11 AM MST.
On the first play of the game and it’s obvious interim head coach Jerry Rosburg has made changes. Back to return the kickoff is running back Marlon Mack #37. Hackett had picked Montrell Washington #12 for return duties. Mack returned the ball to the seventeen yard line. On the first play of the game by the offense, Latavius Murray #28 ran up the middle for four yards. On second down, Russell Wilson #3 pitched the ball back to Murray and he ran to the right for one yard. On third down, Russell threw an IN-COM-PLETE pass. Corliss Waitman #17 punted on fourth down with 13:23 to go in the first quarter.
The Chiefs first drive of the day started from the 35 yard line. On first down, Isiah Pacheco #10 ran up the middle for a two yard gain. On second down, Patrick Mahomes #15 found Marquez Valdes-Scantling #11 on the right sideline for a six yard gain. On third down, Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce #87 near the first down marker on the left side for a four yard gain. On first down, Ronald Jones #2 ran up the middle for three yards. On second down, Mahomes completed a pass to himself for a six yard gain. On third down, Jerick McKinnon #1 was stuffed for no gain. On fourth and one, with 9:45 left, Mahomes found Kelce near the left side numbers for a ten yard gain. On first down, Mahomes connected with McKinnon over the left side for an eleven yard gain. On first down, the Chiefs ran a screen to the right and Skyy Moore #24 turned the play into an eighteen yard gain. On first and five, from the Denver five yard line, Pacheco ran up the middle and into the end zone for a Kansas City touchdown. The Chiefs point after touchdown play failed, the holder Tommy Townsend #5 turned the play into a two point conversion attempt that also failed.
This time around, Kendall Hinton #9 was back to return kickoffs. The second Bronco drive of the day started from the 25 yard line. On first down, Russell rolled to the right and found Courtland Sutton #14 on the right side for a gain of seven yards. On second down, Murray ran up the middle for four yards. On first down, Russell’s pass hit Billy Turner #57 in the helmet and fell to the ground, IN-COM-PLETE. On second down, Russell scrambled to the right for five yards. On third down, Russell threw an IN-COM-PLETE pass, but there was a flag on the play. Cameron Fleming #73 was flagged for holding. The Chiefs declined the penalty and Waitman punted on four down with 5:30 left in the quarter.
On first down from the nine yard line, Mahomes rolled to the right before dumping the ball off to Kelce for a three yard gain. On second down, Mahomes found Pacheco camping on the left sideline for a nine yard gain. With four minutes left, Mahomes connected with Kelce near the left side numbers for a six yard gain. On second down, Pacheco ran over the left side for three yard gain. On third and one, Mahomes connected with Kelce over the middle, but the refs changed their minds and ruled the pass was incomplete, without a challenge flag being thrown. On fourth and one, with 2:42 left in the quarter, Townsend punted.
Hinton was back on the field for punt return duty and he returned the ball from the 10 to the 21 yard line. On first down, Murray ran to the right for two yards. On second down, Russell hit Andrew Beck #83 on the left side, just short of the first down marker for a six yard gain. On third down, Jerry Jeudy #10 motioned from the left to the ride side and Russell hit him for a four yard gain. On first down, Murray ran up the middle for two yards. On second down, with 20 seconds left, Russell connected with Chase Edmonds #19 over the middle for an eleven yard gain. That play brought the first quarter to an end.
At 11:33 am MST, the first quarter in Kansas City ended. Chiefs 6, Denver 0.
When play resumed, the Broncos were on the 46 yard line. On first down, Edmonds ran to the right for five yards. On second down, Russell connected with Jeudy for a three yard gain over the right side. On third down, Murray ran up the middle for a one yard gain. oml this made me cry!! i love your perspective on this so much and it is literally almost the exact same as mine. all of those quotes are on my list, and i thought i'd add one more rumble fish quote that i absolutely love.
"He saw things other people couldn't see, and laughed when nothing was funny. He had strange eyes- they made me think of a two-way mirror. Like you could feel somebody on the other side watching you, but the only reflection you saw was your own." i love this one bc its the closest description i've ever seen to what i'm like. i don't necessarily understand things the way most people would, but the way i think about them, i understand them just fine for myself.
s.e. hinton books always take me a little bit longer to read bc i think so much during them. but the reason i think so much is bc i can relate so much to them. ponyboy trying to understand darry or dally, the motorcycle boy just wanting to be free, travis (taming the star runner) making mistake after mistake but not understanding how to stop, how dally feels like he can't be human bc if he does that somehow makes him more vulnerable. i always find a way to relate and thats why i love her books so much.
i also have to say i love what you said about the fish. i always just assumed the motorcycle boy put them in the river bc its not fair that they get put in separate containers when he is in their exact same situation but he has to fight to survive, so putting them in the river was maybe to make them fight just like he grew up having to? but the way you put it makes so much sense now. he wanted them to be free bc thats what he wanted for them. it made him happy. and ykw? i'm gonna put fish in the river too.
tysm for writing that i loved it so so so much!!
ok so i have several of these but i just wanted to know about other peoples so...
what quote or line from an s.e. hinton book really spoke to you?
you can put yours in the comments or reblog and put in the tags (the quote as well as which book its from)
thx!! (sorry if this is corny or cringe i just really wanna hear what other people have to say)
