Congratulations to all the comedians for a hilarious comedy workshop showcase last night at The Cleveland Improv. This one was funny from beginning to end - and earned BIG laughs from our "almost" sold-out audience (we were close!). Special thanks to our MC Angela Verges, show-closer Anthony Mayo AND a special surprise set (he didn't know it was coming - but good to be in the right place at the right time) from Steven Prince. Someone said I even got a few laughs, but it was just my pre-recorded laugh track (that I take everywhere with me). Next workshop starts February 18 at The Tampa Improv and then back in Cleveland this spring. Stay tuned for dates.

To become a working comic, experience in front of an audience (stage time) is mandatory. But there may not be a lot of performance opportunities in your area. One way to get stage time is to run an open mic and an email from an aspiring comedian asked for suggestions on how to approach potential venues. A quote from Steve Martin in "The Jerk" says it all, but we'll look a little deeper into the "business" of starting an open mic. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic."

Bombing On Stage | How To Be A Working Comic #22
Every working comic has bombed on stage - especially when starting out. The thought might scare off aspiring comedians, but it's part of the learning process. Hopefully the lesson learned is how to cut down the odds of bombing again, or how to prevent an onstage "free fall." That's just what a headlining comedian and successful comedy writer in Hollywood did by using what he learned - when starting out - to turn a potential bomb into a successful performance with a lot of laughs. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic.”

Thinking About A Stage Name? | How To Be A Working Comic #20
There are many reasons why you might consider using a stage name. In this episode, the email is from a comedian with a "real job" and a boss who doesn't approve of his social media posts about doing stand-up. The question is about using a stage name - but the answer includes another question: Can he live with it? This one includes a personal story from the author of "How To Be A Working Comic.” For more info visit TheComedyBook.com * Have you ever thought about doing stand-up comedy? Dave Schwensen's "How To Be A Working Comic" workshop is available online through Udemy. Over 2.5 hours of video lectures. Follow the link for more details, sample videos and to register. Thanks, and we'll see you on stage! https://www.udemy.com/course/how-to-be-a-working-comic/?referralCode=3CA50A4434D7BFB591F3

Sending a shout-out, congrats, and a BIG thank you to all our workshop comedians for a fantastic show Wednesday at The Cleveland Funny Bone. This group was really fun to work with and kept getting better (funnier) every week. They made my life as a coach easy since all I really had to do during our last session was to sit back, laugh, and name-drop (I'm good at that - LOL)! I did the same last night - only I was dropping their names after the show! < I'll drop them again right now… Photo left to right: Dave Cody (MC), Shelby Lane, Susan Russell, Geno Jawhari, Mikey Rubin, Ryan Rogers, Dave (me!), Pippy Pierce, Bobby Arnold, Loren Naji, Headliner Ryan Dalton (thanks Ryan), and Nick Rupe.

A talent booker requested an audition video from an aspiring comedian. But with a lack of performance opportunities in his area, the comedian has only been working consistently through online (Zoom) shows. Would it be acceptable to submit a virtual video? If so, what are ways to look professional - and not like an amateur? From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic."

(via Playing The Talent Booking Game) Hey Dave – You’ve been writing about promoting. I’m on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. How do I get bookers to look at my video? I send emails but don’t hear back and don’t know if they’re watching. Thanks – D.M.

Branding | How To Be A Working Comic #14
It's another field trip! When we talk about getting a Mickey Mouse outfit, we don't mean a hat with big ears. This episode is about turning your online marketing efforts away from too many distractions and focusing on getting hired. It's all about branding and we're using the biggest mouse in the world for inspiration. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic".

Wait a minute... That's not Dave! The topic is bringing energy to your performances to help you connect with an audience. Eye contact and personality will set you apart from the crowd and gives you a better chance at being remembered. Why is that good? Because you never know who might be watching and could play a future role in helping you become a "working comic." There's a special guest star for this episode who has an energetic onstage resume that includes starring roles in "Miss Saigon," "Mama Mia," "Footloose" and others.
