(via Playing The Talent Booking Game) Hey Dave – You’ve been writing about promoting. I’m on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. How do I get bookers to look at my video? I send emails but don’t hear back and don’t know if they’re watching. Thanks – D.M.

To become a working comic, experience in front of an audience (stage time) is mandatory. But there may not be a lot of performance opportunities in your area. One way to get stage time is to run an open mic and an email from an aspiring comedian asked for suggestions on how to approach potential venues. A quote from Steve Martin in "The Jerk" says it all, but we'll look a little deeper into the "business" of starting an open mic. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic."

Bombing On Stage | How To Be A Working Comic #22
Every working comic has bombed on stage - especially when starting out. The thought might scare off aspiring comedians, but it's part of the learning process. Hopefully the lesson learned is how to cut down the odds of bombing again, or how to prevent an onstage "free fall." That's just what a headlining comedian and successful comedy writer in Hollywood did by using what he learned - when starting out - to turn a potential bomb into a successful performance with a lot of laughs. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic.”

Branding | How To Be A Working Comic #14
It's another field trip! When we talk about getting a Mickey Mouse outfit, we don't mean a hat with big ears. This episode is about turning your online marketing efforts away from too many distractions and focusing on getting hired. It's all about branding and we're using the biggest mouse in the world for inspiration. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic".

Wait a minute... That's not Dave! The topic is bringing energy to your performances to help you connect with an audience. Eye contact and personality will set you apart from the crowd and gives you a better chance at being remembered. Why is that good? Because you never know who might be watching and could play a future role in helping you become a "working comic." There's a special guest star for this episode who has an energetic onstage resume that includes starring roles in "Miss Saigon," "Mama Mia," "Footloose" and others.

Congratulations to all the comedians for a hilarious comedy workshop showcase last night at The Cleveland Improv. This one was funny from beginning to end - and earned BIG laughs from our "almost" sold-out audience (we were close!). Special thanks to our MC Angela Verges, show-closer Anthony Mayo AND a special surprise set (he didn't know it was coming - but good to be in the right place at the right time) from Steven Prince. Someone said I even got a few laughs, but it was just my pre-recorded laugh track (that I take everywhere with me). Next workshop starts February 18 at The Tampa Improv and then back in Cleveland this spring. Stay tuned for dates.

Showcase Your Comedy Writing | How To Be A Working Comic #11
You would think all comedians want to be on stage, but some would rather be comedy writers and stay behind the scenes. An email from one of our subscribers asked about writing for sitcoms and how to submit material. I have an experienced theory about this and make my point while visiting the Music City Showcase Capital - Nashville, Tennessee. From the author of "How To Be A Working Comic”.

Video & Audio Set-Up For Your Zoom Show | How To Be A Working Comic #10
The topic in a recent video was about making your online performance a "show." Zoom and YouTube webcasts are going to be around for a long time and you never know who might be watching - and scheduling future (paid) shows. But what is the basic (and affordable) video and audio equipment you should have to keep you from looking like you're standing in a shadow with bad sound quality? Here are suggestions from the author of "How To Be A Working Comic"
