Being a Transgender Nerd

Unpacking the male dominated culture of nerds from a trans woman’s perspective.

I have been a nerd all of my life.

That’s a statement I can’t see anyone objecting to. If you’ve met me, then it’s pretty obvious how nerdy I am; I’m arguably the biggest fan of Star Wars among anyone I know, I’ve spent a significant portion of my life obsessing over videogames (my favorites being Zelda and Metal Gear Solid), and I run a blog devoted to critically analyzing the abridged version of a popular anime. To put it simply, I have more nerd cred than I know what to do with, and I’ve loved investing myself in nerddom since I was a little kid.

I have also been a woman all of my life.

That statement, unlike the first, carries a small amount of potential controversy with it, given that I am a transgender woman (it’s thankfully much less dangerous a statement than it used to be, as our culture has becoming more understanding and accepting of trans people).

And to the benefit of those who would argue against my womanhood, I have not known all of my life that I was, in fact, a woman. This experience of growing up not knowing my true gender and assuming that I was a man has left me with a unique experience, and as a result, I have gained a deeper understanding of the way one’s gender affects their experience within nerd culture.

The hold that straight white men have upon the role of the protagonist is one of the things I noticed earliest. This however, did not help me understand my gender identity; it reinforced the idea that women were inferior, even though that idea wasn’t something I ever directly vocalized.

Of course, I still found myself drawn to the few female characters there were, and Asajj Ventress, a minor character from the Star Wars expanded universe, particularly caught my attention, as I could feel a lot of empathy for a woman whose troubled past had led her to embrace the Dark Side of the Force.

I quickly found myself rather obsessed with her, and I poured over every bit of media containing her that I could get my hands on, even when her lack of significance outside of the Clone Wars animated miniseries meant that most of that obsession was spent rereading her entry on the Star Wars “Databank*.”

Looking back, I see that that obsession rose not only out of a love for Ventress’ character, but out of a dire need to see women I could relate to in the media that I loved. Now, given the complex environment that I grew up in, it is unlikely that the inclusion of more women in Star Wars would have helped me understand my gender identity earlier (though honestly, who’s to say what could’ve helped), but I can safely say that the inclusion of more women would have helped me feel even more like the Star Wars universe belonged to me.

And while I don’t spend as much time obsessing over Asajj Ventress as I used to, thanks to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” she and the Star Wars universe have grown up about as much I have; where she used to be shown only as a tool of the men who would use her, she’s grown into a woman who abandons these men to live her own life, and is attempting to live a good life despite it the hold the Dark Side still has upon her. That version of Ventress, as it happens, is just the type of role model I needed back when I was a youngling.

*Back in the early 2000s, the official Star Wars website had a database of professionally written articles summarizing the history of each character and object present in the Star Wars universe. It was unfortunately discontinued a while back, but its spirit lives on through Wookieepedia.

New Fiction 2024 - March

Dark Disciple by Christie Golden (2015)

I couldn't binge SW without going to the library like the old days to grab one of the recent EU novels. This one continues the Asajj Ventress arc that was cut from the final Clone Wars seasons, and I'm ambivalent about the course of events. But it looks like I chose the perfect time to read it because the final season of The Bad Batch will address things that annoyed me about the ending.

Cathedral by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels (2002)

It was feeling a bit shaky in the previous novel (This Gray Spirit) with a lot of time spent on less interesting nuance, but this novel saves this short series by trimming off the expositional fat and keeping up the pace. The cliffhanger ending was fantastic and I've been jittery waiting until I can move on to the next one.

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville (1851)

Herman, pal, I know what you were going for with the middle 2/3 of this book, but that really should've been a standalone expansion. Tolkien (or maybe his editors) knew to leave that to its own thing. In any case, WHAT A BOOK. How is this from the mid-1800s? Great beginning, great ending, interesting middle for those who can get through the instructional texts on whales and whaling.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor dev. Respawn Entertainment (2023)

I miss some of the more alien environments from the first game. They definitely borrowed spaghetti western cues from Mandalorian for this, and you see below how much I gripe about that show's influence. Cal's still kind of a dud. But it's great overall. What a fun, huge, expensive-looking game. How does any SW developer going forward beat this?!

Drive-Away Dolls dir. Ethan Coen (2024)

It's reaching out toward those 90s crime comedies the Coens had going, but just kinda falls short. I can't put a finger on what exactly is missing. Maybe it doesn't go far enough?

Madame Web dir. S.J. Clarkson (2024)

One of those laugh-at-the-dialogue-that-isn't-meant-to-be-funny affairs.

Perfect Days dir. Wim Wenders (2024)

I've over the moon for this movie. Just perfect in every way. I felt it in my bones, watched it ten times at theaters all over the area as I chased down showtimes, and I'll gladly watch it again.

Holy crap, I missed Loving Vincent but this makes me wanna go and check that out, because this animation technique is gorgeous. All of the performances were great, too.

Justice Smith and An-Li Bogan did amazing work in The American Society of Magical Negroes. Everyone in the cast and crew, really, but they portrayed a lot of complicated feelings and fears with aplomb and also had a really sweet romantic scene that got to me like no romantic scene in recent memory. I fell for Bogan’s character just like Smith’s character did. (And they respond to that by the end.)

Andor (2022)

First half is two thumbs up, second half is one shaky thumb up. Big Mandalorian vibes with the whole return from whence you came narrative arc. I'd like to see them break away from Favreau's influence (I unfairly pin the live action ups and downs on him).

The Mandalorian - Season 3 (2023)

It's getting weird with the father figure thing. And it's befuddling when one has to catch a different show to understand key beats in Mandalorian and Grogu's story. Hype status for more seasons is low.

Ahsoka (2023)

The get-togethers are fun, but it meanders a bit and the ending was a headscratcher. Great combat and Star Wars-iness though. I'd come back for more with a hopeful glint in my eye.

Star Wars Resistance (2018-2020)

They could've had something good here, but they really whiffed most of season 1. It starts to get good at the end of s1 and maybe through half of s2, but then they seemed to tie things up hastily when they knew they were getting cancelled. Can't recommend. :(

Tales of the Jedi (2022)

Anthology Star Wars?! Anthology Star Wars!! They make me care about characters from the movies that meant nothing to me, as is Filoni and co's way.

Star Wars: Visions (2021-2023)

MORE anthology Star Wars?!! And "Screecher's Reach" in the second season kinda wrecked me. Just typing this out makes me think of it again and the tears well. It's from the Secret of Kells studio and it's just a phenomenal short. Both anthology shows are must-watch.

The Outer Limits - Volume 2 (1964)

I'm surprised how little of this first season carries through to the 90s revival that I love so much.

Star Wars Animated Pride Headcanons

This is for the characters in the animated TV shows (minus The Bad Batch because I haven't seen it yet. 🤭)

I can't do all the characters in the shows simply because that would be... a LOT, but I'll do the main ones and any I find particularly fun!

As with my last post, these are just my opinions and it’s totally cool if you have different ideas. Art is subjective and there are plenty of ways to engage with said art. This is just for my personal fun!

Without further ado:

Ahsoka Tano (she/her): Bisexual

Might be canon? It's implied she liked Lux Bonteri, and also she kind of had a love-interest in the Ahsoka novel in Kaeden Larte. Either way, because I'm a dumb Bisexual, my favs are getting the bi treatment.

Rex (he/him): Aromantic

Rex loves his friends, but never felt any romantic attraction for anybody. Which is fine. There are plenty of ways to love! And he's got a lot of love to give!

Quinlan Vos (he/they): Pansexual, Non-Binary

A Funky Dude. He's just vibing. That includes matters of gender and sexuality. They don't care. Really they could use any pronouns and not be affected. He just like who he like regardless of gender or species. Probably a Monsterfucker.

Asajj Ventress (she/her): Pansexual

Gender doesn't matter. Only power. She's just unlucky to have fallen for Quinlan (or lucky depending on how you look at it).

Barriss Offee (she/her): Lesbian

I feel like she struggled with her feelings of liking someone, considering the Jedi Code is against attachments. The fact that she fell in love with Ahsoka didn't help matters. She really didn't have anybody to turn to. She had a crush on her best friend, and the order that raised her wouldn't affirm attachments. The order failed her. In many different ways.

Plo Koon (he/him): Ally

Plo Koon supports his Queer Jedi family!! Don't come for them. He will take you out.

Shaak Ti (she/her): Lesbian

Your fav Clone Mom is a Lesbian. I believe even though she was attracted to women and femmes, she didn't act on it, adhering closely to the code, even at a young age.

Depa Billaba (she/her): Ally

Same thing as Plo Koon. Loves her gay and trans Jedi. Is not afraid to cause bodily harm to those disrespectful of her family.

Aayla Secura (she/her): Bisexual

Ah yes, the Twi'lek everyone ships with Commander Bly and Kit Fisto. Girl is bisexual and wouldn't have issues acting on it, regardless of Jedi code. She learned well from her master, it seems.

Ezra Bridger (he/him): Bisexual

My dumb Bisexual brain go brrr. You can't tell me that man didn't have a crush on both Wren siblings. And let's not forget about Jai Kell. They were fruity. (I know they've never met, but I strongly ship Luke and Ezra because I just think it'd work so well). Once again, one of my favs and therefore Bisexual.

Kanan Jarrus (he/him): ally.

He loves his gay son(s) and daughter. He will fight for them. He will fight for you. Get you a man like Kanan Jarrus.

Hera Syndulla (she/her): Pansexual

Hera's got bad taste in species, tbh. She saw a drunkard on a mining moon and went "oh?? 💖"

I'm mostly kidding. Space mom loves who she loves regardless of gender. It just so happens that the species she attracts are dumb human males.

Sabine Wren (she/her): Sapphic

Can't decide whether she should be Lesbian or Bisexual with a huge preference for femmes. She gives off Lesbian energy tho. Her and Ketsu Onyo are fruity.

Garazeb Orrelios (he/him): Gay

That's not a scary Lasat. That's a homosexual. Can you stop making heart eyes at Kallus for one second? Ugh.

Alexsandr Kallus (he/him): Gay

Man gets shown affection ONE TIME and suddenly he's throwing away his fascist beliefs for a man. Can't decide whether that's good for him, or just desperate...

Hondo Ohnaka (he/him): Aromantic Homosexual.

Romance?? Hard pass. Hook-ups?? Absolutely.

Not really that important to this post, but when I was playing The Sims 4: Journey to Batuu™️, I really, really wanted an option to flirt with Hondo, but the goddamn game wouldn't let me do it. Guess it would hurt their brand to let me flirt with the really old space pirate. Just let me romance the dirty old space pirate in your dumb life simulation game!!!
