They would assemble at the funerals of veterans waving signs that said, “God hates fags” and “God loves dead soldiers”, among various other disgraceful slogans, all directed at the families of fallen American military personnel as they were being laid to rest, all in the name of some twisted homophobia, correlating the loss of lives to “god” punishing America. The Klu klux klan has held massive demonstrations in Washington DC and around the country in the past. More recently neo Nazi groups have marched and gathered in cities across Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These groups preach a message of white supremacy, the inferiority of ethnic groups of color, and an embrace of fascist, totalitarian rule. Their discriminatory, repugnant displays are constitutionally protected under the First Amendment.



The first amendment guarantees the right to express one’s views regardless the depravity. To think and say what one feels without fear of judicial repercussions.

Harvard, the PAC 10, and all the institutions of higher learning are obliged to offer the curriculum of their liking. To approach the subjects as they see fit. To instruct their faculty on matters of importance.

For all the fake free speech absolutists. All the cosplay first amendment warriors. The entire “don’t tread on me” crowd. What’s the justification of this? How does instructing universities on what they can and can’t offer their students reflect the rights enshrined in the constitution.

The freedoms and liberties granted under the constitution apply to all peoples residing in America. If it applies to one it applies to all. There is no picking and choosing of who these rights are granted to, based on the particular topic or party.

Fear is powerful. Fear is rooted in the most instinctual part of the mind. The, fight, fright or flight, has been a defense mechanism in nearly all creatures. If you’ve ever seen a herd of dear, or a flock of birds get spooked, when one darts away in fear, the rest follow. It’s contagious.

Courage is not a survival instinct. It is an act not often seen in the animal kingdom. Protecting offspring, or asserting dominance tend to be the occasions it’s seen with wild animals. But humans have long been stubborn, and frankly, kinda dumb when it comes to courage.

Yet, courage is contagious as well. In ancient battles, soldiers looked to their leaders to find them bravely charging the enemy on the battlefield, it filled them with strength. When outnumbered gladiators took on opponents in the arena it filled the crowd with awe. When John Hancock wrote his name first in large print it gave others hope.

Good for Harvard for standing up and charging into the battlefield! Good for all of us who participated in the ongoing protest against tyranny. Good for the artists and creators who speak out in defiance of authoritarianism.
